kiss rock band tour 2022

KISS Announces May 2022 U.S. Tour Dates

KISS has announced a handful of new U.S. shows as part of the band's ongoing "End Of The Road" tour. The four rescheduled concerts will take place in May after they were postponed last year. All previously purchased tickets and VIP packages will be honored for the new dates.

As previously reported, KISS will also headline this year's Welcome To Rockville festival on Thursday, May 19 in Daytona Beach, Florida. GUNS N' ROSES , FOO FIGHTERS and KORN will close out the rest of the four-day event.

2022 U.S. tour dates:

May 11 - Milwaukee, WI - American Family Insurance Amphitheater* May 12 - Dayton, OH - Wright State University Nutter Center* May 14 - Hartford, CT - Xfinity Theatre* May 17 - Raleigh, NC - Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek* May 19 - Daytona Beach, FL - Welcome To Rockville – Daytona International Speedway

KISS launched its farewell trek in January 2019 but was forced to put it on hold in 2020 and part of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"End Of The Road" was originally scheduled to conclude on July 17, 2021 in New York City but has since been extended to at least the end of 2022. The trek was announced in September 2018 following a KISS performance of the band's classic song "Detroit Rock City" on "America's Got Talent" .

Last fall, KISS frontman Paul Stanley said that the final concert of the "End Of The Road" tour will likely happen within the next year and a half.

Last October, KISS 's second Las Vegas residency was canceled, with fans who already purchased tickets via Ticketmaster having been notified that the shows were no longer taking place. The cancelation came a day after Rolling Stone magazine published a story in which a group of KISS roadies suggested that the lack of COVID protocols enforced on "End Of The Road" led to the death of a longtime guitar tech, 53-year-old Francis Stueber . Stueber died of coronavirus in his Detroit hotel room on October 17, just two days after being quarantined.

The crew members claimed the tour didn't take strict enough safety measures, including not testing everyone regularly. In addition, some crew members allegedly disguised their illness and/or faked vaccine cards.

KISS 's current lineup consists of original members Gene Simmons (bass, vocals) and Stanley , alongside later band additions, guitarist Tommy Thayer (since 2002) and drummer Eric Singer (on and off since 1991).

Formed in 1973 by Stanley , Simmons , drummer Peter Criss and lead guitarist Ace Frehley , KISS staged its first "farewell" tour in 2000, the last to feature the group's original lineup.

Kiss are an American rock band, forming in New York City, New York, United states of America, they have been making: hard rock, heavy metal and glam rock since 1973.

Originally Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were a part of a rock and roll band called "Wicked Lester" left the band after feeling that their music needed to head in a new direction. Later in 1972 Peter Criss joined the band after auditioning for the duo when they came across an advert he had placed in Rolling Stone.

The band went on to audition for Epic Records, they however were not liked and did not manage to secure a record deal. During this time period the band began to mess around with their image, they started to dress differently from the stereotypical rock scene at the time and also wore make up. In 1973 the band gained Ace Frehley who would become their lead guitarist as they were very impressed with his audition, the band soon officially became known as "Kiss".

On November 1 1973, Kiss were signed to Casablanca records, later that year the band had their first opening for a band called "Blue Oyster Cult" at the Academy of Music in New York. It was here that Gene Simmons accidentally set his hair on fire (needless to say he survived).

Kiss received positive reception when they released their live version of song "Rock and Roll All Nite" This was followed by the bands release of studio album "Destroyer" which was released in 1976, the album went gold a month after release and their song "Shout It Out Loud" reached number 1 on the Canadian Singles Chart. The album went on to go double platinum in the US with 2 million sales.

Kiss have received over 15 awards such as Band Of The Year by Metal Edge Readers' Choice Awards, Favorite new song for "Beth" and have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

As of 2014 the band members of Kiss include: Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer.

Live reviews

Kiss & Def Leppard ... what a pair! The concert took place at Lakewood Amphitheater in Atlanta. As we were driving in, we could see the clouds getting darker and darker ... storm coming our way ... seemed like the gray/black in the sky, along with the occasional clap of thunder, were getting ready for a night of rooooccckk! Of course, we arrived and it started raining … but that did not stop us … it was a night to remember. I’ve been a Def Leppard fan since the early 90s … the amphitheater was packed … they sang non-stop all their greatest hits – and boy do they have a lot of them! I could see the crowds (different ages – some who had brought their kids), join me as we travelled back in time to those high school or college years and remembered that special someone as we were singing “Two Steps Behind” or “Pour Some Sugar on Me”. It was priceless! Short break … it stopped raining and it’s now dark. A black curtain with the famous KISS logo is covering the stage and it’s now completely dark outside. The crowd is standing up and curiously waiting for what’s coming next … Down comes the curtain and the group starts descending to the stage on one of those … oh, so well known mechanical platforms used during the 80s. KISS on stage is the stereotype of the glam 80s band on steroids. I love going to concerts and usually make it to pretty much any concert that hits Atlanta: old, new, rock, alternative – you name it. I have seen all kinds of cool stages, lightshows, fireworks, etc … but nothing could prepare me for seeing this band which continues to deliver on the excess of 80s rock & roll even after we’ve long past the decade of rock. It was amazing … the makeup, the costumes, that platform as they descended onto the stage … it was a combination of “Rock of Ages” and “Rockstar”. For those of you who were young during the 80s … this show will infuse you with that energy that only music can provide … for those of you in the mid-to late 90s and after … if you know good music – you know these guys and the show is something to remember!

Thank you for caring enough to see if we enjoyed our time at the Kiss concert on 3-26-19. This is the first concert I’ve ever been to here and the first concert my sons have ever been to. Most of all this was a birthday gift to my husband. I have to say Kiss is amazing. Your staff and cleanliness was amazing for such a big place. Great job!!! But I do have to say I was very disappointed in our seats. We had so much obstruction from the jumbo tron and poles from our seats. It hugely impacted how much of the show or what we could see of the show.

So instead of a great visual and audible experience, it was more audible with some glimpses of the huge screen and some stage. I wish as I purchased these tickets I was shown where the poles and equipment were going to be because I bought these tickets the first day they were opened to purchase and there were many seats in that price range to purchase at the time. I would have definitely purchased different seating for the same money. I could send you pictures of what we saw from our seating, if you would like to see them. Just sad...again I do appreciate you actually reaching out to us about our experience and actually I’m very impressed. Keep up the great work and cleanliness, because we were very surprised on how amazingly cared for the TD Garden was taken care of and again nice staff. Obviously great management. I also appreciate you reaching out to us, again Great customer service. Thank you Traci Mahar

KISS was the best act I have ever watched. From Paul Stanley zip-lining to perform mid-audience on a platform, in his twelve-inch platform boots, to the band members not only performing on stage but high above it, as well, to Gene Simmons "breathing fire" and sililoquiy spitting blood segment. All the band members were lifted above the main stage at various times through-out the concert. It was quite the spectacle.

They also did not waste time before the encore performance as there was a curfew. So they just kept playing on. I did not hear any curse words as they must have been aware of their young KISS army members in the audience, dressed fully in KISS regalia. A few fans were also observed outside who were dressed up as Ace Freley, the space object, Peter Criss and even the vampire, Gene Simmons.

At one point, Paul Stanley joked that the previous night's audience in Austin had said the same thing about Dallas fans as the Fair Park crowd had booed the southern fans when Paul had asked who were the biggest rock and roll fans in the state of Texas. KISS closed their set with the classic rock anthem, "Rock and Roll All Night and Party Every Day". Over-all, the KISS experience made up for what was lacking from the previous act and the opening one. Kudos to KISS!

I Have Only Been Going To Concerts Since The End Of 2017 and I've Already Seen Many Of My Favourites And I Have Always Wanted To See Kiss as they are One if not My top favourite band of All Time and after seeing them for the first and only time last night in London i can say without a doubt it was and is (I Stand By My Word When I say This) the best thing i have ever been to in possibly my entire lifetime (not kidding) There will never be another band like Kiss The Stage setup, timing with the pyro etc was outstanding as you expect from kiss, and the finale was awesome I have been a fan Of Paul Stanley For years and my favourite thing to watch him do is when he smashes his guitar at the end of the show, it made me so happy to see it live in person i got emotional, like i said you'll regret it when Kiss is No Longer About, No One Does A Live Show Like Kiss and if this is indeed the Final Tour they indeed went out with a bang And il'l Never forget it.

Another great Kiss concert, they know how to put on a show! The first time I've seen them in this lineup. They played most of the songs I expected and wanted them to play, from Detroit Rock City to Black Diamond, Psycho Circus, Lick it up and Rock and Roll all night. Was a bit baffled that I was made for loving you got one of the best reactions from the audience. Seriously, Paris? I think there was a fairly equal spread of songs from most parts of their career, although they maybe should have played I just wanna, and no matter how much Paul wants Hell or Hallelujah to become a classic, I don't think it will. Anyway, this is supposed to be a positive review. Kiss rock and which other bands shoot fireworks from their guitars and have their band members play above the audience and in the crowd? Yes, Kiss will probably back again, but I'd say, go and see them while you still can!

A KISS Goodbye! I’ve seen KISS 3 other times, once in the 70’s, once in the 80’s and once in the 90’s. But last nights concert in Minneapolis was a Crazy, Crazy Night!! They pulled out all the stops to make sure that their last concert here was an amazing spectacle! I brought my 24 year old son to witness his first (and probably last) KISS concert and he was literally blown away! Thank you KISS for allowing me to share this experience with my son!! Thank you Gene and Paul for the many decades of incredible music and on stage mayhem! Thank you Tommy and Eric for being absolutely top-notch replacements for the other two originals. I have been, since my teenage years, an avid KISS fan...and now in my fiftys, I am proud to say I Still Am!! Thank You KISS!!

The End of the Road Tour stopped in Ottawa last night. It was almost painful to watch. They should no longer be playing back to back shows, Paul Stanley's voice is done. It was clear that he is using backup vocals. There were times when you'd hear his voice but he was not at his mic. Tommy Thayer is not Ace Frehley that much was obvious. The show appeared clumsy and disorganized at times. The setlist needs some tweaking, not a very good sampling of their entire catalog. They often at times seemed like they were just collecting a paycheque. Gene and Paul say they couldn't depend on Ace and Peter but Ace simply cannot be replaced. This tour will suffer because of this.

Being a rock fan, I wanted to go for the single reason that they are considered a legendary rock band and I wanted to cross them out of my list.

It happened to be - most likely, honestly! - the best show I have ever been to in my life. They showed they are not a bunch of old rags that rely on top of past achievements but a bunch of passionate rock professionals who, despite their age, give all they can to deliver an outstanding performance - and the most impressive thing is, they DID!

Imagine now, if it was THAT good and they are in their late 60s, how epic it must have been when they were younger!

I truly hope I have the opportunity to see them again!

One of the best concerts I have ever been to and I've been to a lot !! Great theatre and a fantastic spectacle all round. This is why these guys have survived the rock industry for 40+ years and still pack out arenas. They can truly teach bands of today how it's done. Absolute professionals. Money well spent. If I had to find a negative (which isn't easy) it would be the concert length. At around 1hr 45 mins, I would have liked a few more songs to push it to 2hrs but seeing they are in their 60's I can forgive them for that !! Don't waste a second and make sure you see kiss while you can. You won't regret it !! Rock on !!

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer KISS has announced a new schedule of US shows for the The End of the Road Tour .

Four rescheduled show dates and one additional date will kick off this May after having been postponed last year. The show was originally scheduled for 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic shut down the concert industry.

It had been rescheduled for September 5, 2021, but that show and a few others were postponed after frontman Paul Stanley and bassist Gene Simmons tested positive for COVID-19.

In October, KISS wrapped rescheduled North American dates, following the death of longtime guitar tech Francis Steube who passed away from COVID two days after being diagnosed at the age of 53.

Previously purchased tickets will be honored for the rescheduled date, and ticket inquiries can be made through the point of purchase. The band is also set to resume its End of the Road Tour in Australia in March.

KISS will also close out night one of the Danny Wimmer Presents event that has been newly crowned the Largest Rock Festival In America. Other iconic bands such as Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters and Korn are among the other headliners of the four day event.

Kiss Announce Final Concert, Map Out More ‘End of the Road’ Tour Dates

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Kiss ‘ End of the Road farewell tour has scheduled its final stop: July 17th, 2021 in the band’s native New York City. Before that, however, Kiss has added a ton of new 2020 dates to their final trek, including two lengthy North American legs.

“We’ve been on the End of the Road tour, and people have said, ‘When is the last show?'” Paul Stanley recently told the audience aboard the Kiss Kruise ( via Ultimate Classic Rock ). “So, we’re here to tell you that the end of the road comes to an end on July 17, 2021 in New York City.”

Following a tour of Australia ( where the band will play a concert for great white sharks ) and Japan to close out 2019, Kiss will return to the road in 2020 with a 29-date U.S. tour that begins February 1st in Manchester, New Hampshire, and ends March 15th in Biloxi, Mississippi. Kiss will then return overseas to South America, Europe and Africa before a second North American leg opens August 28th in Mansfield, Massachusetts.

Tickets for the new North American shows will go on sale November 22nd at 10 a.m. local time, while tickets for a meet and greet with the Kiss will be available starting November 19th at 10 a.m. local time via the band’s website . Kiss Army fan club members will have access to presales starting November 20th at 10 a.m. local time, while Citi cardholders will be able to purchase tickets on the 20th starting at 12 p.m. local time.

“We can’t be running around for that much longer in 40 pounds of gear,” Paul Stanley recently told Rolling Stone of the farewell tour. “There’s nothing maudlin about it. It’s a celebration with our fans around the world. We wanted to raise the bar again as to what a band can do live. That’s really what we’ve always done: we’ve always wanted to be the band we never saw. As Kiss' Final Concert Approaches, What's Next for the Rockers?

A fter nearly five years, 200-plus shows and millions of dollars in box office receipts, Kiss will wrap their End of the Road farewell tour with two back-to-back hometown shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Dec. 1 and 2, 2023.

It’s been a long, sometimes difficult road for the face-painted rockers, who launched their farewell trek in 2019 but were forced to postpone it in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons both contracted the virus in 2021, causing additional cancellations, and Stanley’s nasty bout of the flu in November 2023 forced the band to scrap three dates as their final concerts loomed.

Nevertheless, Kiss triumphed over illness, brushed off accusations of lip syncing and only occasionally responded to jabs from ex-bandmates as they said goodbye the only way they know how: with a roaring, fiery rock ‘n’ roll spectacle the likes of which they helped pioneer.

As the End of the Road tour approaches its (alleged) actual end, what’s next for the band?

The End of the Road Won’t Be the End of Kiss

The members of Kiss may be planning to hang up their platform boots for good after their Madison Square Garden blowout, but that doesn’t mean the band will cease to exist — at least not if Stanley or Simmons have anything to say about it.

“Kiss is like an army or a sports team,” Stanley told UCR in 2022. “When the MVP is no longer playing or retired, the team doesn’t call it quits. On a battlefield, an army, when they lose soldiers, doesn’t wave the white flag. Somebody else picks up the weapon and runs forward. So in one form or another, I believe there will always be a Kiss.”

Stanley’s philosophy on this matter predates the End of the Road tour. “When a band or anything, a team, lasts 40 years, 50 years, the only way for it to continue is to evolve,” he said in 2018. “There are bands touring at this point with one or no original members and I have no problem with that, because it didn’t happen overnight. It was a series of changes over years or decades. If someone were to say, ‘Well, there’s no original members in one of the versions of Yes ,’ I’d say, ‘Who cares?’ It sounds like Yes and the pedigree is Yes, so is it Yes? Yes!”

It’s not surprising that Stanley would feel this way — after all, he and Simmons have kept the Kiss name alive for half a century with a rotating cast of other musicians. “I think that Kiss is a concept, it’s an ideal,” Stanley said in the same interview. “It’s a way of performing and giving to an audience, and that goes far beyond me. I’m a big fan of mine – I think I’m really good at what I do – but it doesn’t mean there’s not somebody else out there who can bring something to the band.”

Could Kiss Tour With No Original Members?

Although Simmons and Stanley are essentially the faces of Kiss these days, they’ve made it clear in various interviews that they consider the band to be greater than the sum of its parts. In fact, Simmons admitted in 2022 that he could envision a future “Kiss” tour that features no original members.

“Kiss will continue in ways that even I haven’t thought of,” Simmons said. “But I can conceive of — you know, the Blue Man Group and Phantom of the Opera tour around the world with different personnel. There could and should be a Kiss show, kind of live on stage with effects and everything else, but also a semi-autobiographical thing about four knuckleheads off the streets of New York that ends with the last third as a full-blown celebration, a full-on performance.”

The Demon was quick to add: “Not with us. Although not a problem stepping in every once in a while.”

Stanley is also open to the idea of a next-generation Kiss lineup, though he said it’s not currently at the top of the band’s priority list. “I think anything is possible,” he told UCR in October 2023. “It’s certainly something that we’ve spoken about, but not anything more than that.”

“Kiss Will Always Exist”

Kiss has never shied away from a good business opportunity, so one might naturally be skeptical of their claim that they’re done touring for good. Still, the band has remained steadfast on the matter.

Some people — including those of us at UCR — have suggested that Kiss would be a perfect fit for Las Vegas’ new, state-of-the-art MSG Sphere . But Stanley doesn’t think it in the cards. “I can’t speak to it in any other way except to be honest with you about how I feel now, and the way I feel today is … I can’t really see that happening,” he told UCR. “As far as I’m concerned, we’re done.”

Done onstage , that is. Stanley and Simmons agree that Kiss will endure long after they ring out their final note at Madison Square Garden — even if they haven’t specified in what capacity. “We couldn’t stop Kiss if we wanted to, because it belongs to the people of the world,” Stanley said. “So we can be the keepers and the curators. Kiss will always exist.”

Gene Simmons Says KISS Will Extend the End of the Road Farewell Tour to 'Another 100 Cities Before We Stop'

KISS is currently on the road in Europe as part of the legendary rock band's End of the Road World Tour

The opportunity to see KISS "Rock and Roll All Nite" isn't over yet!

During a new interview with Chaoszine, singer and bassist Gene Simmons claimed the band's End of the Road farewell tour will be extended to hit 100 more cities around the world before KISS exits the stage for good.

Upon the tour's announcement in 2018, the band — which also includes members Paul Stanley, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer — released a statement about retiring after its planned concerts.

"All that we have built and all that we have conquered over the past four decades could never have happened without the millions of people worldwide who've filled clubs, arenas and stadiums over those years," KISS said at the time. "This will be the ultimate celebration for those who've seen us and a last chance for those who haven't."

Speaking to Chaoszine about when he envisions the tour coming to an end, the 72-year-old rock star was admittedly unsure. "We don't know. We've never retired before. This is our first time," said Simmons. "It's like painting a painting or writing a book. When somebody says, 'When is it gonna be finished?' You're in the middle of it; you don't know."

Simmons then spoke about the decision to extend the tour. "The crew is happy. Everybody's happy," he explained. "So we've decided to add another 100 cities before we stop. I don't know how long that's gonna take."

In another recent interview with KLOS' Whiplash hosted by Full Metal Jackie , Simmons opened up about the inspiration behind KISS deciding to cease performing concerts.

"The reason for stopping touring is because of pride and self-respect and a love and admiration for the fans," he said. "The last thing you wanna be is to be a world-champion boxer and stay in the ring too long. It's only a matter of time until your legs are not gonna be able to hold you up, and you're gonna lose."

Simmons continued, "We've also seen boxers who've stayed in the ring too long and bands who continue touring too long. And they forget lyrics and you can see the deep wrinkles in their faces. I mean, it's just the nature of life as we know it on earth."

"So we're doing the right thing. We're gonna quit while we're on top, do the best we can, and it'll be sad, but it's also gonna be happy," he added. "On the last show we ever do as a touring band, I'll be crying like a 12-year-old kid whose foot you're stepping on."

Since the End of the Road World Tour's launch in January 2019, KISS has played concerts across North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia. The legendary rock band is currently in the midst of the tour's second European leg, which will be followed by a string of shows in Australia and another run in the United States.

Future dates of KISS' End of the Road World Tour are currently unknown.

kiss rock band tour 2022

Kiss performs its final concert. But has the band truly reached the 'End of the Road'?

In the 50 years since Kiss first kicked and thrashed its way onto the New York rock scene, the band has given the world sing-and-shout-along hits like "Detroit Rock City," "Crazy Crazy Nights" and "Beth," and live performances replete with blood-spattering, fire-breathing, pyrotechnics and gobs of cartoonish stage makeup.

"Their schtick lifted them up to the absolute top," music writer Joel Selvin , the author of numerous books about rock musicians including Linda Ronstadt, the Grateful Dead and Sly and the Family Stone, told NPR.

On Saturday, the memorable stagecraft that made Kiss one of the biggest selling hard rock bands in the world will come to an end, as its members perform what they are touting as their final show of their aptly titled, four-year-long "End of the Road World Tour" — at Madison Square Garden in New York. The concert will be available to watch live on Pay-Per-View .

"It has nothing to do with personalities in the band or tensions or a difference of opinion or musicality. It's purely practical," said Kiss co-founder, rhythm guitarist and vocalist Paul Stanley in an interview with the music publication Ultimate Classic Rock of the band's reasons for bringing five decades of Kiss to an end. "You can play beat the clock, but ultimately the clock wins."

The city has apparently gone Kiss-crazy in the days leading up to the occasion, with the appearance of Kiss-themed taxis, Metro cards and pizza boxes. On Wednesday, the New York Rangers hosted KISS Game Night , featuring Kiss-related activities and "limited-edition KISS x Rangers merchandise." Band members also made an appearance at an Empire State Building lighting ceremony on Thursday. Staged in honor of Kiss' swan song, Empire State emitted the colored lights associated with the band — silver, red, purple, green and blue.

Despite all the hooplah, this may not in fact be Kiss' goodbye kiss. The band undertook a previous "farewell tour" more than 20 years ago. After a brief hiatus, it started touring again on and off in 2003. Live shows and album releases flowed on from there.

In interviews, band members have spoken about continuing on after Saturday's Madison Square Garden performance in one way or another. Both Stanley and co-frontman Gene Simmons have their own bands and say they aim at the very least to continue making appearances in those formats.

"Nobody ever really says goodbye," said rock critic Selvin, citing comebacks over the years by the likes of Cher, Steve Miller and the Grateful Dead. "It's a show business strategy. You take a bow. But there's always an encore."

Selvin said artists often reappear after retiring because they can make a lot of money owing to fans' pent-up demand. For example, the pop-punk band Blink-182 is earning four times as much on its current reunion tour than it did when it last re-united in 2009, according to Far Out magazine. (The band issued a statement in 2005 saying it was going on "indefinite hiatus," only to reunite four years later.)

"Personal life interferes, you want to disappear into the woodwork for a while and then demand builds and you go back to it," Selvin said. "Steve Miller took his band apart in '99. He was just tired. And he was out for six years. And then in 2005, he put his band back together and suddenly his price was up, and there was more interest in seeing him."

Meanwhile, some musical acts simply never retire. The Rolling Stones, for instance, are embarking on yet another North America tour in 2024. The band just announced additional dates .

Selvin doesn't think we've heard the last of Kiss.

"The rule of the farewell tour is that you have to say goodbye to every hall, and sometimes you have to say goodbye twice," Selvin said. "I do not expect this to be the last time that Kiss performs, any more than 'Fare Thee Well' was the last time The Grateful Dead performed."

An excuse to drool ‘blood’ … Gene Simmons of Kiss playing in Birmingham.

Kiss review – typically explosive end to rock’s silliest band

Resorts World Arena, Birmingham The solos are dull, the banter crass, the songs often lacking in interest – and yet Kiss’s final tour is also a barrage of amazement

A nd so Kiss roll into Britain for their third last-ever-time. Their End of the Road tour – which has now lasted longer than the first world war and used nearly as many explosives – has already come to these shores in 2019 and 2022 , each time promising to be the final UK shows (there was also a Kiss Farewell Tour in 2000-2001, but that didn’t make it to Europe). Nevertheless, here they are again, kabuki makeup and pyrotechnics present and correct.

Pretty much everything about Kiss is amazing: the self-mythologising, the shamelessness, the complete bravado of their stage show, which is more like a fireworks display than a gig. They haven’t earned the loyalty that fills arenas after 50 years by not giving the crowds what they want, and they haven’t becoming one of rock’s biggest brands without squeezing every last drop out of those loyal fans (there’s a vast range of T-shirts on sale tonight, starting at an eye-watering £45). The only thing they’ve ever lacked is enough great songs to fill a show of nearly two hours – even fan favourites such as Cold Gin or Makin’ Love are so basic you spend three minutes waiting for something, anything to happen.

They’ve also never lost the hard rock habit of giving everyone a solo, and even by the standards of solos – reliably the dullest part of any rock show – theirs are wretched. Tommy Thayer shoots fireworks out of his guitar headstock, Eric Singer bashes around his kit; Gene Simmons’ bass solo, delivered from a platform raised to the lighting rig, is nothing more than an excuse for him to drool “blood” before singing God of Thunder, the ur-Simmons anthem in which he proclaims himself not just god of said weather, but also of rock’n’roll.

God of Thunder also sees Simmons promise that “the spell you’re under / Will slowly rob you of your virgin soul”, and thus covers Kiss’s two lyrical subjects – how they are really good at rock, and really good at sex – in one brief burst. If the words are often cursory, that’s rather the point: these are songs whose purpose is to be hollered along to by big crowds, not parsed. It’s wildly more fun to join Stanley in singing “You pull the trigger on my love gun” than it is to wonder what was on his mind when it was written. Not least because it doesn’t really require any wondering.

Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Paul Stanley of Kiss.

At their best, though, they are thrilling in the way only brutally primitive rock (accompanied by explosions) can be. The opener, Detroit Rock City, is lithe and propulsive; I Was Made for Lovin’ You proves they could write melodies if they needed to; Heaven’s on Fire showcases the pop harmonies that meant they crossed over in a way such basic music rarely does (the crowd here is notably mixed in age, and with plenty of women). Like the Rolling Stones, their original threat – once upon a time, they were suspected of being Satanists rather than capitalists – has long since dissipated, and they’ve become another of those monoliths that demand to be viewed at least once.

Paul Stanley’s stage banter – delivered in a voice that’s part disgruntled parrot, part man having his balls unexpectedly squeezed, and part kids’ entertainer – remains a thing of astonishment: “I think sometimes, after Makin’ Love, you have to call the doctor … not any doctor … I’m not talking about any doctor. I’m talking about … Calling Doctor Love.” Incredibly, that’s an improvement on his ending of a minute’s silence for the Manchester bombing in 2017 with the announcement: “Does anyone here like to Lick It Up?”

Despite a recent clip from an Antwerp show that made it plain that some of the backing vocals are now taped, it’s clear Stanley is singing live. His voice is creaky at times, but no one ever went to see Kiss in expectation of technical brilliance, and when it matters he – and Simmons – can deliver in spades.

It’s panto, and despite a mid-set sag, it ends triumphantly with Rock and Roll All Nite, accompanied by most of the UK’s supply of confetti and a minefield’s worth of, yes, explosions. Don’t bet against this December’s retirement being just the first of many.

The End of the Road tour tours the UK until 8 July at OVO Hydro, Glasgow, and ends in Madison Square Garden, New York, 2 December.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Kiss have sold their music catalog, name, image and likeness — including their iconic makeup designs — to Pophouse Entertainment , the Sweden-based music investment firm behind ABBA’s “Voyage” hologram show . While terms of the deal were not officially announced, Bloomberg and Associated Press said it was worth upwards of $300 million.

In a statement, Pophouse plans to promote the group’s “iconic music, enigmatic personas, and expressive imagery for generations to come.” Indeed, news of the deal arrives just four months after Kiss unveiled plans for an avatar concert similar to ABBA’s with digital versions of the group.

Since its launch in London in July of 2022, “ABBA Voyage” has grossed more than $1 million per week and last year Universal Music chairman Lucian Grainge announced plans to take the show around the world, with Las Vegas recently rumored as a destination. ABBA’s Bjorn Ulvaeus is a co-founder of Pophouse, which over the past two years has also acquired catalogs by the late Swedish DJ-artist Avicii, the electronic music group Swedish House Mafia and American singer Cyndi Lauper.

Kiss teased their forthcoming digital show at the final concert of their “End of the Road” tour in New York last year when avatar versions of the band closed the show. The first digital Kiss show is scheduled for 2027.

Kiss co-founder Gene Simmons said, “We have always been breaking new ground in popular culture, and this partnership will ensure that we continue to do so for years to come. Because what Pophouse is doing, is breaking rules. We already have several plans in development.”

Per Sundin said of the deal, “Kiss has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and has throughout their 50-year career continued to push the boundaries in popular culture. The band’s enigmatic personas, unparalleled band attributes, and iconic imagery have made them a cultural force and a legendary act with multigenerational appeal.

“We will safeguard and enrich this legacy through future global endeavors, by breathing new life into their characters and personas while also leveraging and elevating the visual world of KISS.”

Swedish entertainment firm Pophouse acquires rock band KISS's music catalogue

US band KISS performs on stage with black and white makeup on their face.

Swedish entertainment and music investment company Pophouse says it has acquired the music catalogue, brand name and likeness of US rock band KISS.

Financial terms of the transaction are not being disclosed but the Associated Press estimated the deal is worth more than $US300 million ($456 million).

Pophouse Entertainment Group, established by ABBA's Bjorn Ulvaeus, is also the founding investor in the ABBA Voyage show in London.

Pophouse previously partnered with KISS during the final night of their farewell tour in New York in December 2023, when the band unveiled digital avatars of themselves.

Four members of ABBA

"Our mission is to fulfil the band's vision to become immortal, and to let new generations discover and be part of the KISS journey and carry it forward," Pophouse head of investment Johan Lagerlof said in a statement on the company's website.

"With the help of the fans' energy, the band, our expertise, and creativity – we will make that vision happen."

Bassist and lead singer Gene Simmons said the band had "always been breaking new ground in popular culture".

"This partnership will ensure that we continue to do so for years to come," he said.

Pophouse said it would create digital versions of KISS, with an Avatar show planned to launch in 2027.

KISS are Pophouse's second investment outside of Sweden, following the acquisition of Cyndi Lauper's music catalogue in February 2023.

They're the latest to participate in an ongoing trend of blockbuster acts and their rights holders inking deals to sell their back catalogues, often for impressive sums.

It's big business — especially considering two-thirds of all music streamed is made up of catalogue music, and streaming accounts for 84 per cent of all music industry revenue.

Not every artist disclosed the amounts involved but some deals have been estimated at as much as half a billion dollars.

Bob Dylan

Artists such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Justin Bieber, Stevie Nicks and Shakira have all sold or had their catalogues sold.

In 2020 Bob Dylan sold publishing rights to his catalogue of more than 600 songs to the Universal Music Publishing Group.

The singer's collection includes modern standards like Blowin' in the Wind and Like a Rolling Stone. Industry experts estimated the deal was in the range of $US300 million to $US500 million.

In 2021, Warner Music Group reached a deal with David Bowie's estate for worldwide rights to the prolific singer's recorded music catalogue from 1968, including Space Oddity and Let's Dance.

Terms were not disclosed.

Not all artists consent to or have had control over the sale of their catalogues.

In June 2019, music manager Scooter Braun's Ithaca Holdings announced that it had acquired Big Machine Label Group, which was led by Scott Borchetta and home to Taylor Swift's first six albums, for an estimated $US300 million to $US350 million, the New York Times reported.

In response, Swift started to re-record and release new versions of those albums, labelled Taylor's Version, in an attempt to reclaim her masters.

Kiss gets in the groove by selling its music catalog and brand for over $300 million

By Megan Cerullo

April 4, 2024 / 10:49 AM EDT / MoneyWatch

Famed rock group Kiss has reached a deal to sell its catalog, brand name and other intellectual property to a Swedish entertainment group for more than $300 million.

The buyer, Pophouse Entertainment Group, collaborated with Kiss last year create to create digital avatars of Kiss members Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer, shown on stage for the first time during the band's farewell tour at New York City's Madison Square Garden in December.

Pophouse CEO Per Sundin said it also has plans for a Kiss biopic, documentary and experiences including an avatar show slated for 2027. He also said the company wants to expose Kiss to younger generations of fans.

"We work together with Universal and Kiss, even though we will own the artists rights, and we're doing it in conjunction with Kiss," Sundin said.

KISS End of the Road World Tour - Final Show

Bassist and lead singer Gene Simmons told the Associated Press that Kiss is indeed "in the trenches with them."

"We talk all the time. We share ideas. It's a collaboration. Paul [Stanley] and I especially, with the band, we'll stay committed to this. It's our baby," he said.

Simmons also said the band will not tour again.

"We're not going to tour again as Kiss, period," he said. "We're not going to go put the makeup on and go out there."

Good morning. I'm Leila Fadel. The rock band Kiss has sold their music catalog, name and likeness to a music investment firm based in Sweden. The price tag? An estimated $300 million. This is a long-running trend in music, established artists selling off their entire catalogs for millions of dollars. But it's the makeup design that elevates this deal to art. It's MORNING EDITION.

Legendary rock band sells catalog for $300M, predicts collaboration in new performance era

Kiss, a 2014 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, has sold its catalog, brand and IP to Pophouse Entertainment Group, a leader in use of avatars for virtual concerts. NEW YORK – The rock group Kiss has cashed in their catalog, brand name and IP, selling to the Swedish company Pophouse Entertainment Group for an estimated $300 million.

But founding member Gene Simmons promises the band is not selling out. And with new technology, you’ll be able to see the group perform digitally soon.

Pophouse, founded by ABBA’s Bjorn Ulvaeus, plans to market the legendary band to a new audience. Kiss was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 for its stellar career. Now Pophouse wants to market Kiss to a new generation of music listeners.

Simmons insists it will be a collaboration.

“I don’t like the word acquisition,” Simmons told The Associated Press . “Collaboration is exactly what it’s about. It would be remiss in our inferred fiduciary duty — see what I just did there? — to the thing that we created to abandon it,”

The band was careful, Simmons said, to find a company that they could appreciate and work with.

“People might misunderstand and think, ‘OK, now Pophouse is doing that stuff and we’re just in Beverly Hills twiddling our thumbs.’ No, that’s not true,” Simmons said. “We’re in the trenches with them. We talk all the time. We share ideas. It’s a collaboration. Paul (Stanley) and I especially, with the band, we’ll stay committed to this. It’s our baby.”

Part of that collaboration will involve use of digital avatars of the band that were unveiled as the band closed out its farewell concert with a performance in December at Madison Square Garden.

The band’s current lineup – founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons and guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer – left the stage to reveal digital avatars of themselves. Those avatars – a virtual Kiss – launched into a performance of “God Gave Rock and Roll to You.”

Industrial Light & Magic, in partnership with Pophouse, created the special-effects avatars. The two companies teamed for the “ABBA Voyage” show in London, The Associated Press said reported in December. For that show, fans could attend a full ABBA concert as performed by their digital avatars.

Kiss and Pophouse haven’t said exactly how the avatars will be utilized in the near future, but Pophouse CEO Per Sundin says fans can expect a biopic, a documentary and a Kiss experience on the horizon.

An avatar show is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2027. Sundin told the AP that fans can expect it to kick off in North America.

“What we’ve accomplished has been amazing, but it’s not enough. The band deserves to live on because the band is bigger than we are,” Stanley told The AP after the avatars were unveiled. “It’s exciting for us to go the next step and see Kiss immortalized.”
