General Information

Sri Lanka ETA is a kind of approval letter granted by Sri Lanka Immigration System which enables all nationalities are eligible to visit Sri Lanka on short term stay.

Sri Lanka ETA is an electronic visa and valid to stay up to maximum 30 days on Double Entry or Multiple entry basis as per policy.

All foreign nationals are eligible to apply eVisa who want to visit Sri Lanka. Applicant can apply personally through our secured error free assistance system or via approved agencies or Embassy/Consulate.

What is Official Sri Lanka ETA

Official Sri Lanka Immigration Department announced an Electronic Approval Note ( ETA) for a short term social visit to Republic of Sri Lanka from 1st January 2012 onwards.

A Sri Lanka Approval Note (ETA) is an online Visa permit to enter Sri Lanka for non Sri Lankan nationalities and valid to stay as per visa policy.

Persons plans entry to Sri Lanka which should hold a valid (ETA) Approval Note issued by Sri Lanka Immigration. Tourists/Business can apply online for Sri Lanka ETA which is completely electronic processing online submission and the approval for the same will be communicated via email.

An ETA is an Electronic Approval Note (Visa) for visit to Sri Lanka for a stay of up to 30 days. The Sri Lanka ETA is issued electronically; it is not required to submit original travel document or other documents for processing. Applicant need to complete and submit our online application form and the Sri Lanka ETA can be processed within 24 hours. Most of the Sri Lanka ETA will be processed immediately as per Immigration approval.

It is very important that the information on the request form is accurate and exactly matches the traveller's passport. Name, Date of Birth, Citizenship, Passport Number and Passport dates must be correct.

Extension Policy

A Foreign traveller staying more than 30 days may eligible to apply for an extension of stays.

On first time extends 60 days, second time 90 days and third extend upto 90 days. Overall total 270 days applicant can stay from the date of first arrival.

Applicant should be visit personally visa section of Immigration department alternatively through immigration extension portal [ extension ].

If you unable to use the above services then you may proceed the any authorized agency.

Please note that applicant cannot apply for extension on this portal.

Recent Update - Visa Policy:

Revised entry requirements:

• Precaution measures for any foreigners arriving during these pandemic periods is removed.
• Vaccination certificate is not compulsory to produce by person arriving via Sea Port or Airport.
• Requirement for Pre boarding and on arrival visa negative COVID-19 test result is removed.
• If foreign travellers become COVID-19 positive after arriving then they should mandatorily quarantine for 7 days in private hospital/hotel/accommodation. The cost of treatment must be borne by their own.

The cost to obtain a short-term visa to visit Sri Lanka rose from $50 to $100 in April.

But the reason for it is disputed.

The price hike followed Sri Lanka's transition from using internal Electronic Travel Authorizations, or ETAs, to an e-visa system operated by the visa processing company VFS Global.

Sri Lanka's Tourism Minster Harin Fernando blamed a "technical issue," telling CNBC Thursday that VFS Global "missed out" on offering 30-day visas when it starting processing visas to the country on April 17.

In response, VFS Global said, "Visa categories were introduced as per the directives of [Sri Lanka's] Department of Immigration and Emigration (DI&E)."

Both parties agreed that 30-day travel visas priced at $50 had been reinstated as of May 7. VFS Global, in an email sent to CNBC Monday, said that on this date "the DI&E re-introduced the 30-day visa category for all nationalities."

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Public Security moved away from its ETA system because of concerns over frequent hacking of the website by scammers, Fernando said.

"We wanted to go for a global company which is very reputed," he said.

VFS Global stood out among the options, he said. The company works with 67 governments and operates in more than 150 countries, according to its website.  

But VFS Global's fees angered many in Sri Lanka's travel industry and led to allegations of corruption by Sri Lankan opposition leaders.

The fees — which total some $25 per visa , according to local media — had been disclosed via a contract signed with Sri Lanka's immigration authority on Dec. 21, 2023, a spokesperson from VFS Global told CNBC.

"Service fee charges are approved by all Governments and are determined based on various factors such as scope of the overall engagement, volume of applications expected, resource and infrastructure costs required to fulfil the Service Level Agreements etc," said VFS Global. "For example, in the case of Schengen countries, the service fee for short stay visa can go up to a maximum of 40 Euros."

But these have been significantly reduced for 30-day visas, said Fernando. Now, Sri Lanka's government keeps $40 and VFS Global charges $10, he said.

'Free visas' come with charges

Citizens of seven countries are eligible for free visas to enter Sri Lanka.

"It must be noted — that the 30-day, free visa for seven nationalities namely India, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, and Thailand were always available and is valid for travel into Sri Lanka up to 31 May 2024," a VFS Global spokesperson said.

However, applicants from these countries still have to pay VFS Global's fees, said Fernando.  

"The government of Sri Lanka won't be charging, but the platform … will," he said. As a result, "We're still in debate, whether we should completely give up VFS."

Sri Lanka's "free visa" policy should not to be confused with the "visa-free" agreements enacted in the past year by many Asian countries . These agreements exempt travelers from needing a visa.

Under Sri Lanka's policy, visas are required.

Sri Lanka is considering adding 60 more countries to its "free visa" list, said Fernando.

"Pre-Covid, we had more than 40 countries on the free visa," he said, adding that a committee appointed by the government will issue a decision within 30 days.   

"We will definitely have a visa policy in place very soon," he said.

Sri Lanka visa for the citizens of Kuwait

Valid e-mail address – iVisa will send you the ETA via e-mail in PDF format, which is why you must provide an e-mail address to which you have access. Do not forget to print out a physical copy before you leave.

The application form you must submit consists of three phases:

Super Rush processing – it only takes 36 hours for your application to be processed. As you can imagine, the fee is higher. USD $258.99 to be more precise.

The fees above apply to the Sri Lanka Tourist ETA . If you wish to travel to Sri Lanka for business purposes, you need to apply for a Sri Lanka Business ETA . The processing time remains the same, but the fees are USD $144.99 , USD $195.99 , and USD $260.99 respectively.

During the second phase of the application form , you need to make the payment and do a quick revision of phase one. It is imperative that you do so. A small error can render your visa invalid, and that would entail repeating the process for a new visa.

Lastly, the third phase is when you need to upload some documents that iVisa asks of you . That should not take long, and iVisa lets you know precisely what you need to upload. Once all three phases are complete, you can submit your application.

Explained: Sri Lanka’s new expensive visa system

Travellers have to use a new visa portal run by VFS Global

Sri Lanka has come up with a new expensive visa system. Travellers wishing to visit the island country are now required to use a new visa portal run by VFS Global, instead of the previous Electronic Travel Authorization system. The old system, known for its speed and accessibility, has been scrapped.

The new adjustment, which came into force on April 17, was made based on a cabinet decision last year. The cost of Sri Lankan visa has nearly doubled due to the implementation of the new VFS system, along with the addition of $18.5 (INR 1,544.93) as service fee and $5 (INR 417) as convenience fee.

Minister of Tourism Harin Fernando said he had opposed these charges which were not included in the original proposal. He claimed that the decision was not made by his ministry. Fernando further informed that his ministry is working on a proposal for visa free travel for 50 countries. 

Sri Lanka has removed the visa charge for citizens from India and six other countries since October 2023. However, with the new system coming into force,  Indian applicants will have to pay roughly $23 as convenience and service fees.

Along with Indians, citizens from China, Russia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia have also been exempted from visa charges.

Citizens from countries that are not part of South Asian Association for Regional Coorporation (SAARC) will now have to pay $75 for a standard Sri Lankan tourist visa—an increase of around 50 per cent. Citizens from SAARC countries will have to pay a fee of $35 for a standard tourist visa. 

Foreigners who apply for a two-year multiple entry tourist visa will now have to pay a fee of $300. The prices for business visas have also increased.
