Guide to Litchfield National Park

  • Share Share on Facebook Share on Messenger Share on Twitter Share on WhatsApp Copy Link
  • Getting to Litchfield National Park
  • When to visit

In Litchfield National Park, the opportunities for adventure are endless.

Just a short drive from Darwin, Litchfield is one of the Northern Territory's best kept secrets. Whether you splash beneath misty waterfalls, marvel at unusual termite mounds, hop between waterholes or hike the walking trails, you’ll never get bored on a trip to this stunning national park. Camping is the only accommodation available within the park, but other accommodation options are available nearby. With some careful planning, a memorable visit can also be achieved with a day-trip.

The entrance to Litchfield National Park sits just under 90 minutes from Darwin. Self-drive is the most common way to explore the area, and while not required, a 4WD vehicle will allow you to access all routes within the park. If you prefer not to drive, there are  day tours  from Darwin operating daily.

  • Darwin International Airport (DRW) is a 90-minute or 105km (66mi) drive from Litchfield National Park; international and domestic arrivals.
  • Hire cars are available at Darwin Airport. It is recommended to pre-book if you are hiring a 4WD vehicle.

Similar to Darwin, Litchfield National Park experiences two distinct seasons; a dry season (May to October) and a wet season (November to April). The roads may close due to wet weather, so the most popular time to visit is during the dry season when most roads and swimming spots are open.

  • High season: Dry season (May to October)
  • Low season: Wet season (November to April)

Short walks in Litchfield National Park

There are several short, well-signposted walks in Litchfield National Park that pass through a range of landscapes that are typical of the Top End.

Get the Litchfield National Park short walks information sheet and map PDF (1.1 MB) .

Each walk is graded based on the walking track grading system .

Before you walk, read about  bushwalking and hiking safety .

Shady Creek and Florence Falls

Start at Florence Falls picnic area or the plunge pool.

This beautiful walk along Shady Creek is an alternative to the main track to the plunge pool. It has 160 stairs. Along the way is monsoon forest and open woodland.

Florence Creek

Start at the upstream picnic area or Buley Rockhole.

This walk follows Florence Creek between Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole.

Park your vehicle in one of the car parks at Florence Falls as parking is limited at Buley.

Tolmer Falls

Start at Tolmer Falls Lookout.

This is a pleasant alternative route back to the car park from the lookout. It takes you through typical Top End sandstone country and along Tolmer Creek.

Swimming is not allowed.

Wangi Falls

Start at Wangi plunge pool.

The walk takes you to a viewing platform at the base of the falls, through a monsoon forest and up stairs to the escarpment.

Swimming is not allowed above the falls.

Greenant Creek

Start at the bridge across Greenant Creek.

This shady walk follows the creek upstream, climbs steeply up to Tjaetaba Falls Lookout then up to a tiny pool above the falls where you can swim.

The plunge pool and the area downstream of the falls is a sacred site, so you should not swim there.

Walker Creek

Start at the car park and walk along the creek.

You can swim in the creek near the picnic area or at a shared camping and swimming hole at the end of the walk.

Please respect the privacy of campers along the way.

Tjaynera (Sandy Creek)

Start at the car park. The track winds along the creek and passes a hillside full of cycad palms before reaching a plunge pool.

You can swim in the pool.

Lower Cascades

Start at the car park. The quickest way to Cascades Creek is by this shady walk.

This walk is closed in the Wet Season due to flooding and an increased risk of crocodiles.

Upper Cascades

Start at the car park. This walk takes you up onto the Tabletop Plateau where several lookouts have sweeping views of the lowlands below.

The walk is exposed and can be hot, so take water with you.
