OVER 1,000 5-STAR REVIEWS!

The crew was fantastic and went out of their way to find whales. I highly recommend this excursion.

We enjoyed getting to see what came up with the traps and getting to hold a live lobster. It was a good length of a tour and I'd definitely recommend it for the kids or adults like me who are still kids at heart. The ship captain and naturalist were very friendly and great guides.

We booked a whale watching tour through this company. It was a great experience we saw several whales and porpoise and dolphins while on the tour. The crew and staff were great and they really took time to make our tour extra special. We highly recommend this company to all who want to experience an once in a lifetime experience.

During our adventure we saw seals, the infamous puffins, bald eagles along with many other critters as well. The crew were accommodating, professional, a little humorous, and knowledgeable. Highly recommend if you're up for a boat ride in the Bar Harbor area.

So fun! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, the boat had plenty of room to walk around and the captain did a great job making sure we could all see the landmarks they were pointing out. I’d go again!

Interesting history of Bar Harbor area coupled with eagles, hawks, cormorants, gannets and other sea birds. Good narration by our naturalist, Ruth, who was informative and interesting. Enjoyed the lighthouses and seeing the diverse harbors and island shores.

We loved both Captain Edwin and narrator Andy. Both were so gracious, clearly caring about everyone's comfort and involvement. The knowledge that both shared regarding the local seas, lobsters, crabs, seals, and landmarks was very interesting and informative. We caught a variety of sea life in the traps - lobster, crabs, and a sea cucumber. We spotted dozens of seals. The boat itself was stable, clean, and well maintained. It had flaps to protect from high winds and sea spray, but you are allowed to open the flaps as you want. I am someone who can get seasick easily, but I did not feel even the bit queasy. They do post a sign at the dock on the day of your tour that states the sea sickness level, so if it indicates a high level of sea sickness, you can take Dramamine or other in advance. Kids and adults alike enjoyed this tour and it was very interactive.

The boat is roomy, both inside ans out on the decks; staff friendly and knowledgeable. The sound system is nice and clear so all guests can hear what the naturalist is saying about the wildlife. And...oh...the whales!!! It was amazing, and I hope to do it again. Well worth the price.

On this once in a lifetime experience, we chose to go with this whale 🐋 watching 👀 tour There are many companies that offer varying tours, and this is the only one I've ever experienced, so can only speak about this one; nor do I have anything to compare it to. This experience was 100% as expected (and advertised) with zero surprises. The Captain, crew, ancillary staff,safety/security personnel and tour guide were all highly trained, knowledgeable, courteous, professional, & welcoming. It was just a fantastic overall 'refreshing' vibe. The scenery was nothing short of amazing, awe-inspiring, and magical. We saw EIGHT humpback whales!!! I am a seasoned world traveler, have visited numerous bucket list places, and have done literally hundreds of excursions through Trip Advisor and similar platforms. I 100%, would do this again if the opportunity presented itself. For others? I highly, highly recommend this experience. 👌

We went on the lighthouse tour and it was wonderful! The guide did a fabulous job informing us about lighthouses, history of the area and alerting us to wildlife. Highly recommend this tour!

The captain and crew went off their route to find interesting sights and sea life for our cruise. The Naturalist on board was knowledgeable and interesting. Highly recommend it!

We had a great experience with the Nature Cruise, we learned a lot about the area and saw some great scenic views! I highly recommend binoculars, you can rent some on the boat, but they’re limited. We got to see seals, porpoises, and a few bald eagles, which was really cool because I had never seen one before and they were what I wanted to see most! I definitely plan on going back again for more cruises!

Ahoy, fellow adventurers! Prepare to embark on a fascinating maritime tour aboard the Lulu lobster boat in Bar Harbor, Maine.

We'll cruise through the picturesque waters of Frenchman Bay, where lobsters rule the seas and crustacean tales come to life.

As we glide through the cerulean waters, you'll learn the art of lobster trapping, practiced by 5,600 independent lobstermen and women in Maine.

We'll unravel the mysteries of their craft, from baiting the lobster traps to hauling in the day's catch, all while surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Maine coast.

But our adventure doesn't stop there! As we navigate the salty swells, keep your eyes peeled for captivating wildlife encounters.

Playful harbor seals may pop their heads out of the water to greet you, harbor porpoises abound, and bald eagles are commonplace.

Lulu lobster boat in Bar Harbor, Maine

Our adventure begins at the Lulu Lobster Boat Ride office at 55 West Street in downtown Bar Harbor. Here you can buy a ticket for the two-hour tour.

Adults pay $41, folks 65 and older pay $38, and children six to 12 pay $31 each. To guarantee a specific day and time, purchase online .

Lulu is the only lobster boat tour available in Bar Harbor, Maine.

The boat tours depart from the Harborside Hotel & Marina. There are a few souvenir shops to look through and a shaded area to hang out in while you wait.

The owners of Lulu Lobster Boat ask that you arrive 30 minutes before your tour's start time. Boarding begins about 15 minutes before departure.

So for my 2:30 p.m. tour, they allowed us to get on the Lulu lobster boat at 2:15 p.m. Getting there early gives you more options on where to sit.

I'd recommend the right side of the boat. This gives you a better chance to see the summer cottages you'll pass during the first 30 minutes.

Also, the front right of the boat, near where the Captain stands, is where the lobster trap will be pulled up.

A regular Bar Harbor lobster boat

At 2:30 p.m., Captain Will powered the Lulu lobster boat, full of visitors curious about Maine lobsters, and our tour guide, out of the marina.

We glided along the calm waters, passing traditional working lobster boats with names like "Beth Said Yes!" They were smaller than I expected.

The boat we were on, the Lulu, is a traditional Downeast-style lobster boat that was updated to make it more comfortable for group tours.

Bench seating lined the boat's sides, and metal benches were bolted into the middle.

Lulu lobster boat ride

The first attractions our local guide pointed out were the beautiful summer cottages lining the eastern coast of Mount Desert Island.

They were built in the late 19th and early 20th century when spending summers in Central Maine and New England was en vogue.

The term "cottage" is a bit of a misnomer in this context, as these are multi-million-dollar mansions financed by wealthy American families.

A 13,000-square-foot seaside estate open to the public once belonged to Ethel Colket, the daughter of one of the co-founders of the Campbell Soup Company.

It went on the market for $6 million a few years ago and is now home to the Bar Harbor Historical Society .

Red mansion with an ocean view

Martha Stewart, a more famous summer resident, bought " Skylands " in 1997. The 12-bedroom mansion was built in 1925 for auto executive Edsel Ford.

Her estate is in Seal Harbor, near the southern borders of Acadia National Park and beyond the distance you'll travel on the Lulu lobster boat tour.

Martha counts Dick Wolf as one of her neighbors. In 2003, the award-winning creator of Law and Order bought the 18,000-square-foot, maritime-inspired Southerly estate.

Egg Rock Lighthouse

After about 30 minutes at sea, we approached Egg Rock Lighthouse. It's located about halfway between Mount Desert Island and the Schoodic Peninsula .

The building was constructed in 1875 and is a historical landmark. It once required a full-time lighthouse keeper but was automated by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1976.

Egg Rock is managed by the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge, so the sea birds and animals that call it home are protected. It's not open to the public.

We saw harbor and gray seals sleeping on the rocks. And, as we learned from our guide, they can sleep in the water, too!

Seals on Egg Rock Island

We were also informed great white sharks have been coming closer to the island as the waters warm. So far, they haven't been known to attack the seals on Egg Rock.

The local bald eagles that nest on a nearby island aren't as kind. They hunt newborn baby seals.

While we took in the scenery, our guide pointed out an adolescent bald eagle standing on the rocks.

Adolescent bald eagle standing on the rocks to the far left of the lighthouse

I wouldn't have known it was a bald eagle, as its feathers were completely brown. The telltale white feathers arrive as they mature.

The seagulls, who don't like the bald eagles, vastly outnumbered him on the island. They were standing in the grassy area surrounding the lighthouse. Cormorants also nest on Egg Rock.

Atlantic puffins also nest on the small islands around Acadia National Park during the summer but weren't mentioned.

Altogether, we spent about 20 minutes observing the wildlife around Egg Rock.

Then, the Captain did a U-turn, and we motored north toward Bald Porcupine Island (a small island home to deer, bald eagles, and osprey).

The Captain pulls up a lobster trap

Lobster Industry

The lobster fishing industry in Maine is worth approximately $1.5 billion. In 2021 alone, more than 100 million pounds of lobster were caught.

It sounds like a lot, and it is; however, we were told the lobster population along the coast of Maine is in good condition.

Controls are in place to ensure they aren't overfished, so lobstering remains a sustainable industry in the state.

Global Warming

The greater risk to Maine lobsters, and the livelihood of people who catch them, is global warming. The Gulf of Maine is heating up faster than 99% of the world's oceans.

And if the trend continues, and by all accounts, it will, then the lobsters in Maine will migrate north to the colder waters of the Canadian coast, possibly within my lifetime.

Lobster Traps

A Jonah crab caught in the lobster trap

The Lulu lobster boat tour in Maine is an educational experience, so whatever is caught in the lobster traps on the ocean floor is later set free.

But, these sea creatures are in for some excitement if they make it out of the water and into the Lulu.

Once Captain Will stopped the boat at a buoy marking one of their lobster traps, he hoisted it up. As he was doing so, our guide explained the parts of a lobster trap.

They're baited with rotting herring and checked every 24 to 48 hours.

The frequency is important because lobsters are cannibalistic. If a bunch of lobsters are stuck in a trap for too long, they'll start attacking each other.

Also noteworthy is the fact that there's a little escape hole for baby lobsters. This helps ensure they can mature, which is especially important for egg-bearing female lobsters.

Handling a Lobster

A special metal tool is used to place rubber bands on lobster claws

The first sea life our guide showed us was a Jonah crab, one type of bycatch that often wanders into the lobster traps.

Another is the peekytoe crab. Both types of marine life have traditionally been thrown back into the water as they're not worth much.

However, as lobsters migrate north due to warming waters, some lobster fishermen and women are starting to catch Jonah crabs on purpose.

Next, our guide showed us how to hold a lobster by its shell and asked volunteers to place rubber bands over its claws.

A unique piece of lobster gear is used for the job, which seemed pretty effortless.

Measuring a Lobster

Measuring a live lobster to see if it's large enough to keep

A metal ruler is then used to measure the length of the lobster's shell. The minimum length of a lobster is 3.25 inches. The maximum length is 5 inches.

Length is measured from the rear of the eye socket to the end of the main body shell. Lobsters that are too small must be thrown back into the water.

The minimum legal size lobster weighs about one pound. It takes five to seven years for a lobster to grow to its legal size.

Me holding a live lobster on the Lulu lobster boat ride

Once our guide and volunteers demonstrated how to band and measure a lobster, everyone could hold it. Not everyone was interested.

It was my first time holding a live lobster, and I was more than a little anxious, even with its strong claws safely shut. I much prefer my fresh lobster fully cooked and bathed in butter.

Once everyone who'd wanted to hold a lobster had their chance, the rubber bands were removed, and the lobsters were thrown back into Frenchman Bay.

It was about 4 p.m., and the only thing left to do was enjoy the ride back to Bar Harbor. There, we disembarked from our tour aboard the Lulu lobster boat.

Overall, I left my first Maine lobster boat tour with a new appreciation for the hard work and dedication required to catch these tasty crustaceans.

The scenic boat tour involved much more than I expected. Beyond learning about lobsters, I enjoyed the marine wildlife at Egg Rock and stories about the magnificent summer cottages.

The beautiful state of Maine was on full display during this day trip.

I ended the night in the best way, with friends and a traditional Maine lobster feast at Galyn's in Bar Harbor.

We celebrated a day of cycling Acadia and our first lobstering experience. Then, much-needed sleep at Sand Bar Cottage .

Marshall Dodge’s classic humor recordings of “Bert & I” created a soundtrack to Maine lobstermen that is as accurate – and funny – today, as it was 60 years ago. If you’ve ever listened to “The Bluebird” and imagined yourself at the helm of a lobster boat, then it’s time to come to Maine. Lobster boat tours are a unique way to experience lobstering first-hand and learn how lobster fishermen preserve this vital industry.

A Family-friendly Excursion

Guests can pull up traps, and learn how lobstermen decide whether a lobster is good for dinner or needs to enjoy more time at the bottom of the sea. Kids delight in all the other creatures pulled from traps, too, like starfish and crabs.

You can often buy your catch and cook the freshest lobster imaginable or have a restaurant prepare it for you.

Tours go past lighthouses and other landmarks and the ocean’s mammals, like porpoises, seals and whales, can be seen.

You can have a lobster tour on a sail boat, traditional Downeast lobster boat or even ships with see-through floors!

Five-Star Sailing & Boat Tours ★★★★★

Sail Acadia

We were blown away by the service at Sail Acadia. We did a mid-morning private tour for 7 of us. We were able to bring our own mimosas :) Our captain and first mate were knowledgeable, inviting, friendly and easy going. They were very welcoming to our pup! They had blankets and cups on board. Definitely recommend!

We thoroughly enjoyed our sunset cruise with Mike and Kelly. Mike told some great stories of the area, we took wine and dinner to have on the boat, and we enjoyed seeing guillemots and porpoises in the bay. The wind was very light that evening so we had to motor a bit, but it was such a treat to be out on the water on a 120 year old wooden sail boat. We loved it!

We booked a 3 hour sunset sail and it was so much fun. It wasn't the windiest day, but being on the water on a beautiful summer night watching the sun go down can't be beat. We saw plenty of porpoises and other sea wildlife throughout the ride. Bonus points: the tour is BYOB so we brought a bottle of wine with us and the crew provided cheese, crackers and snacks. Thanks for having us!

An awesome experience we can't recommend more highly. Not only was it a fantastic sailing experience, the crew were informative about the area, history, wildlife and the things we were seeing along the way. The crew was great, the boat charming and historic. The best afternoon we have had in Maine for as long as we can remember!

There’s nothing like a trip to Maine in the summer – and a visit to Beal’s is a must for those looking for an authentic lobster pier experience and the freshest seafood one can find. At our working lobster pier in Southwest Harbor, Maine, you and your family will have a blast watching the boats sail in and the lobstermen unload fresh Maine lobster. Hear the creak of rope on the moorings. Catch the scent of saltwater on the breeze, and enjoy the waterfront view.

Our restaurant is closed from October to May, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy fresh from the pier lobster from Maine’s pristine coast. Even when Maine is cold enough to freeze our beards and eyelashes, we’re still hard at work to deliver live lobsters, fresh and frozen lobster meat, and more fresh Maine seafood straight to your doorstep.

It’s time to pull the lobster gear! On our Maine lobster tours, we head out to check some traps, where everything is as hands-on or hands-off as you would like. You will learn about lobsters, as well as the billion-dollar lobster industry. We don’t always catch just lobster, there is a chance for sand dollars, starfish, crabs, fish, and even a sea horse. You will be allowed to keep up to one legal lobster per person.  If time allows a short scenic cruise will finish the trip off.

Lobster Tours Common Questions

It’s typically about 15 degrees colder on the water. Make sure you bring sunglasses, sunscreen, jacket/sweatshirt and rain gear. Wear waterproof shoes or sandals there is chance your feet may get wet. If you have any sort of medications for allergic reactions please bring those with you, as well as your food and drink.

The maximum number of people allowed on our Maine Lobster Tours is six people and each person gets to bring home a lobster!

Hard alcohol is not allowed on board. Beer and wine for those over 21 years old are allowed but the captain may cancel the trip at any time if he feels someone’s behavior is no longer safe for themselves or other passengers. Illegal drugs are prohibited and will result in immediate cancellation. Cancellations due to drugs or alcohol will not result in any form of a refund.

Every person reacts differently to the ocean. If you have never been on the ocean or if you know you get sea sick make sure to take motion sickness pills like Dramamine or Meclizine before arriving at the dock or as the directions state or they will have no effect. Keep in mind alcohol can make the likelihood to be sea sick much higher.

We are adding more boats to our fleet and with the increased bookings we rolled out a very easy to use online booking system where you can schedule your Maine Lobster Tour in a few clicks. This allows Captain Derek to spend his time providing great lobster tour, fishing charter , sunset cruises , and boat tour experiences.

All our charters are private to one group and our pricing is based on per boat versus per person. This is a lobster tour, educational trip, site-seeing cruise, and fun time on the water for you and your family or friends.

Keep in mind our captains have their USCG Masters Captains license .

All prices are per boat NOT per person and only your group will be on the boat. Clients usually tip the same way as they do in a restaurant. 15-20% is the norm if you feel your captain did what he could to make sure you had a fun time on the water. We do our best to go above and beyond for all clients. All trips require a $100 deposit that will be made upon booking your trip through our online booking system.

All cancellations must be made 7 days before the scheduled trip to receive a refund on deposit. If the cancellation is less than 7 days you will not receive a refund for your deposit and you will also be charged for the full charter if we cannot book the cancelled date.

The captain has the right to cancel a trip at any time for weather or mechanical failure. If the trip is canceled before it leaves the dock the trip will be fully refunded if arrangements for another day cannot be made. With your safety in mind rain and cold are not normal grounds for cancelations of trips. If you choose to cancel a trip for your comfort, you will be charged the full trip rate. If a trip is terminated mid trip it will then be charged as an hourly rental rate.

With that said, rain typically is not a reason to cancel a trip as the fish are already wet so they don’t care if it’s raining! We do sometimes make exceptions however for kid’s trips and sunset cruises. The wind/marine forecast is what matters to us.

A Super Fun Bar Harbor Cruise Port Itinerary (On Your Own)

D uring our unforgettable Canada and New England vacation, my friend Angie and I sailed into the breathtaking port of Bar Harbor, Maine, aboard a Holland America cruise. As our last stop, we couldn’t wait to explore all that this charming destination had to offer— from exploring picturesque Acadia National Park to catching glimpses of celebrity homes. We crafted a meticulously planned itinerary that perfectly suited our desires. Here is the Bar Harbor cruise port itinerary we created that left us with perfect Maine memories.

First, Rent a Car

Angie and I were promptly picked up at the port by Enterprise rental cars, as we had arranged in advance. After a 30-minute drive, we arrived at the airport, where we collected our vehicle. Although the process of reaching our destination and completing the necessary paperwork took some time, the rental price was reasonable, and we were pleased to have control over our day’s itinerary.

With excellent fuel efficiency, the car proved to be cost-effective, resulting in a total price of $140, including refueling and the rental itself. While the roads were easily navigable, cellular service was intermittent in certain areas.

To see how the cruise played out, check out this article about the Canada and New England cruise .

Seal Harbor

Located just 30 minutes away from the Bar Harbor cruise port, we decided to take the scenic route towards Acadia National Park and explore the highly recommended areas. One such area is Seal Harbor, renowned for its stunning mansions and celebrity residences, including the likes of Martha Stewart.

Navigating through the winding roads of these charming neighborhoods can prove to be a challenge when trying to find specific addresses of the homes you wish to see. Nonetheless, we strolled along, marveling at the magnificent multi-million dollar properties that dotted the landscape.

Venturing out to MDI (Mount Desert Island) is an absolute delight, as it is home to Bar Harbor and a cluster of upscale Maine towns. These towns are favored summer destinations for affluent socialites and boast impressive art galleries, exquisite dining options, and unique accommodation choices.

The charming city of Ellsworth, nestled on the way to Acadia National Park, offers a picturesque gateway filled with delightful attractions. From museums to birding hotspots, and the captivating Timber Tina’s Great Maine Lumberjack Show that runs throughout the summer, there is plenty to enjoy. Don’t miss the incredible telephone museum, an intriguing dive into our communication history.

Among the charming towns, my personal favorite is Northeast Harbor , reminiscent of serene hamlets found in upstate New York. Its quaint village shops, captivating eateries, and an air of sophistication make it a playground for the affluent, including notable homeowners like the Rockefeller’s.

While exploring, be sure to visit Main Street Mercantile, a must-see shop brimming with souvenirs, glassware, household items, and delightful baby gifts. It’s truly a joy to uncover the hidden treasures of these enchanting small towns at your own pace.

Lunch at Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound

Angie and I share a love for food, and we were thrilled to indulge in some delectable fresh Maine lobster. I’m confident that you’ll feel the same way. After receiving a local recommendation, we eagerly made our way to Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound , a charming restaurant that has been serving customers since 1956.

Here, you’ll discover some of the finest lobsters in the world, sourced from Mount Desert Island and sold within hours of being caught. It doesn’t get much fresher than that!

For our meal, both of us opted for a Lobster Roll accompanied by sides of coleslaw and potato salad. The rolls were perfectly crispy on the outside and delightfully soft on the inside. What’s more, they were generously filled with juicy lobster meat. A side of melted butter provided the ideal complement for dipping our lobster rolls, resulting in a truly divine bite.

Visit Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park, commonly known as the Crown Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast, stands as the premier attraction in Bar Harbor. It is one of the easily one of the key reasons the cruise ships tend to visit here on their Canada and New England itineraries . Our Holland America ship featured some amazing Acadia National Park trips, but we wanted to see several other things in the area, hence curating our own itinerary.

Immerse yourself in the grandeur of this massive park, spanning across half of Mount Desert Island. Begin your exploration by traversing Park Loop Road’s winding 27 miles, where scenic overlooks and captivating photo opportunities await at every turnout.

Marvel at the breathtaking views offered by the oceanside cliffs, granting you a splendid vantage point of the park’s pristine beauty. Encounter the serene beach setting of Thunder Hole and Sand Beach, a stark contrast to the lush, tree-covered mountains. The rhythmic force of the surf lapping against the rocky shore is sure to mesmerize.

During our visit to Acadia National Park , we unfortunately couldn’t find the time to explore the renowned Jordan Pond House and its scenic trail or indulge in the famous popover restaurant. Instead, we decided to head to Frenchman Bay, where we captured breathtaking photos of the stunning beachfront and the majestic mountains in the background.

Keep an eye out for the picturesque Porcupine Islands, the charming mounds of land rising from the shimmering waters of Frenchman Bay.

Cadillac Mountain

The pinnacle of Acadia National Park awaits at Cadillac Mountain, its granite-topped peak towering at an elevation of 1532 feet. As the highest mountain along the North Atlantic seaboard, this awe-inspiring summit treats visitors to a panoramic 360-degree vista overlooking Bar Harbor, Frenchman Bay, and the Cranberry Isles.

A close second in terms of natural beauty lies within Jordan Pond, an exquisite area framed by the majestic Penobscot Mountain and the iconic “The Bubbles.”

Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the wild blueberries that flourish in the area, adding a delightful touch to your journey. While witnessing the nation’s first sunrise may prove unlikely for cruising enthusiasts, Cadillac Mountain proudly holds this title. Trust me when I say the pictures depicting this remarkable spectacle are nothing short of magnificent.

Bass Harbor Head Light

For those with a passion for lighthouses, a visit to Bass Harbor Head Light is a must. Perched on the rugged granite shoreline of MDI, this historic beacon, dating back to 1855, stands as one of the most photographed lighthouses along the Eastern Seaboard.

While visitors can explore the impressive grounds, please note that the lighthouse itself is privately owned and not open for public entry.

Shop for Souvenirs in Bar Harbor

Downtown Bar Harbor, just steps away from the cruise port, is the ultimate destination for all your souvenir needs. From unique and cheesy mementos to adorable and fantastic treasures, you’ll find practically every type of souvenir here. Spend your entire day leisurely browsing through the relaxed and fun offerings available in this port.

Don’t miss out on visiting two must-see stores: Cool as a Moose and Fair Trade Winds. These stores are packed with an array of goodies that will leave you spoiled for choice.

If you’re a jewelry enthusiast like myself, you’ll be thrilled to know that Maine is the source of the elusive watermelon tourmaline. The pieces available here are absolutely stunning. Additionally, there is an abundance of upscale food products such as jams, jellies, sauces, syrups, and more, that are perfect for taking home as souvenirs.

No trip to this region of Maine would be complete without indulging in the flavors of blueberry. We highly recommend trying the blueberry soft-serve ice cream cone from CJ’s Big Dipper. Heavens to Betsy, it’s truly phenomenal!

As you leisurely stroll along the pedestrian-clad sidewalks and explore the immaculate stores, galleries, and wineries, it becomes evident why Bar Harbor has remained a beloved New England summer retreat for over a century.

Bar Harbor: A Visit to Remember

Upon completing our day tour, we returned the car to the airport. Angie and I were then chauffeured back to Bar Harbor, allowing us to explore the area near our cruise ship at our leisure. Opting for self-guided exploration in Bar Harbor proved to be an excellent decision. We avoided waiting for large groups to embark and disembark from buses, skipped unwanted destinations, and were not bound by rigid itineraries.

Planning your own trip shouldn’t pose any difficulties. We hope that these recommended suggestions for the Bar Harbor cruise port mentioned above will enhance your experience in this remarkable destination.

**I was hosted on this cruise by Holland America, but our day on our own was at our own expense. As with all of our articles, opinions and reviews are 100% ours and unbiased.

Hi, we are planning a first time New England trip (details as follows):

* July 15-22 (7 nights)

* 5 Adults (kids are 20/24/27)

* 7/15-7/19 - 4 nights staying at Mira Monte Inn - want to explore Acadia/ Bar Harbor - fairly active group mostly - easy to moderate or so hikes

* 7/19-7/21 - Drive to Ogunquit after Breakfast - 2 nights staying at Pink Blossoms Resort - want to explore area/ Ogunquit Beach - maybe see the Portland lighthouses/Kennebunkport on the way from Bar Harbor to Ogunquit

* 7/21-7/22 - Drive to Boston after Breakfast - 1 night staying at Dagny Hotel (downtown) - explore Boston - maybe see Nubble lighthouse on way - flight out of Boston back to Pittsburgh doesn't leave until 8:30pm, so we have most of that day also

1) Looking for Boat Recommendations in Bar Harbor - Lulu's Lobster or Bass Harbor Island Cruise or Acadian Boat Tours Nature Cruise ??

2) Restaurant recommendations - have a few in mind, but would love to hear any recommendations - looking forward to lobster rolls, etc. and we do not have any dietary restrictions.

3) Lighthouses - can't miss

4) Any other sights - can't miss

Thank you in advance...looking forward to any recommendations from anyone that has been to these areas. We have not been to Maine or Massachusetts before, and very much looking forward to this New England Trip.

Portland Head Light is lovely at sunrise but I don't think you'll be nearby for a drive there....I'd map out the drive from your Ogunquit lodging...might be too far, though. (I just mapped it...it's almost an hour...I'd not do it considering how early the sun rises in June...lol)

The thing with lighthouses is they are down peninsulas a lot of the time so it takes time to get there and then back. You don't have time to see them from your 2 locations. Go to google maps and search lighthouses in Maine and you'll see where they all are in relationship to your bases. https://maps.app.goo.gl/FL72kAzVocHLGUCx5

I'd almost take out Boston but that's just me...I think it deserves more than just one night and I think you're kind of shortchanging Maine by including it....just me, though. lol Just have to throw it out there.....

Restaurants in Bar Harbor : Thirsty Whale, Geddy's , Galyns, Reading Room , Terrace Grille, Pizzeria 131....just a few of our favorites.

I linked the lighthouses above. We love Pemaquid Point Light but I think it's too far out of your way. Nubble is great....you've got it on your list. I really do think Boston is the outlier on the itinerary....maybe take that one night from there and add it to Oqunquit and fly home from Portland .

Easy, moderate, and difficult are subjective terms. Joes Hiking Guide is an excellent resource for hikes. It’s better than AllTrails which in my experience doesn’t always give correct information. Certainly don’t trust anything you research for hiking on YouTube.

https://www.citrusmilo.com/acadiaguide/

My opinion the best hike in the park is Penobscot Mountain via the Spring Trail. It’s on the more difficult side of a moderate trail. There are sections of rock scrambling and a few exposures, but no iron rungs or ladders. If you have questions about specific hikes I’d be happy to answer them. A few of the better, somewhat easier but definitely still challenging moderate hikes:

Gorham Mountain

North Bubble & South Bubble

Parkman Mountain

St. Sauveur

Beachcroft Path up Champlain Mountain

None of these elevated hikes are “easy”. All have varying degrees a rock scrambles, but no rungs or ladders. Acadia has no easy hikes that reward the hiker w/ elevation, although there are easier, flat hikes that still provide a good hiking experience.

Thanks for all the info! I have heard about the Mira Monte breakfasts, and we are really looking forward to that and staying in the downtown area!

I noticed that too about the lighthouses and how far out of the way some might be. We will hit several, so I guess that will be good.

We will try some of the restaurant recommendations.

Thank you, I will definitely checkout the link for the info on the hikes. Well, the other four of our group of five are definitely more adventurous than me lol. So, I'm the only one I'm worried about the "moderate" hikes lol. I had a few of those in mind (Gorham, Great Head, North/South Bubble). Unfortunately I would imagine the easy hikes aren't as rewarding. I guess we will try one of these moderate ones and see how it goes.

Mira Monte is chef owned and Bruce (the chef) and Cheryl are very nice. If you still want more food at breakfast they will accommodate. They offer a sweet and savory option that you pick from the night before. If neither appeal to you you can get eggs and sausage. If you're still hungry after your selection they'll give you more or you can get eggs and sausage...whichever floats your boat. My hubby almost always gets more protein. Their crab cakes are amazing ! If you're lucky they'll be on the menu during your stay. We're there 7 nights next month and I'm thinking about requesting them before our stay. lol

The carriage roads are so pretty and I'll recommend the one near Jordan Pond that goes along Jordan Stream. A few waterfalls and one of the bridges is on this route. Wonderland and Ship Harbor Trails are nice easy trails with payoffs at the end. We like Jessup Path at the Wild Gardens of Acadia. It's a must do.

You're going to wish you had all 7 nights just in Bar Harbor/Acadia/MDI! lol

Too late to edit....

Our love for Maine grew and we've now visited 3 times in May and 2 times over the New Year. Our 4th May trip is in a month and our first ever August trip is this year as well! Never say never....you may very well be back. I know you're going to love it!

Thanks again..very much looking forward to the breakfasts lol and visiting Acadia. I will keep those trails in mind for sure. I hope you have a great trip!

I would definitely visit the Portland Head Light and I would also drive through Kennebunkport as you can catch a glimpse of Walker Point, the Bush family compound. On your way into Ogunquit you can stop at local hot spot Congdons' Doughnuts. Your hotel in Ogunquit is on Shore Road and there are many restaurants on Shore Road as well as in Perkins Cove. We do always have dinner at the Village Inn and we have also enjoyed Front Yard.

If interested you can check the show schedule for the Ogunquit Playhouse and the restaurants can accomodate you for your theater reservations so you can get there in time as I wouldn't call it walkable from Shore Road

Depending on when you want to get to the inn I'd maybe see Portland Head Light on your way down to Ogunquit. For lunch, we like DiMillos. It's in Old Port and is a restaurant that used to be a big car ferry. It's parked on the water and the food is very good. We get a blend of the clam and haddock chowders. They call it Half and Half but it's not on the menu. It's delicious! https://www.dimillos.com/about/ A little history.

You'll hit some slow going traffic on your drive up to Bar Harbor....I'd almost want to just get on the road and take the longer route thru Camden.....that way you can see more than taking the fastest route that goes by Bangor....you sure you can't add more time......LOLOL

The era of large cruise ship visits to Bar Harbor might soon end

Unless another court ruling overturns Bar Harbor’s new cruise ship limits, 2025 is expected to be the last year that large passenger ships drop anchor in Frenchman Bay.

But it could be sooner than that — or may have already passed — if a judge decides that the town must enforce the new limits this year.

“Large” can be a relative term when the smallest cruise ships that visit Bar Harbor are more than 200 feet long and can accommodate 100 paid passengers. Most of the ships that visit Bar Harbor, Maine’s busiest cruise ship port, are closer to 1,000 feet long and carry between 1,800 and 4,000 passengers per voyage.

It is these larger ships that effectively will be banned from visiting the tourist destination when the town’s new daily limit of 1,000 passengers per day  starts being enforced. Of Bar Harbor’s current 104 cruise ship visits scheduled for this year, 70 would be prohibited if the daily limit was to go into effect before May 2, when the first large ship of the year, carrying nearly 2,400 passengers, is expected to arrive.

Of the ships that will still be allowed, most carry approximately 100 to 200 passengers and rarely do two of them appear in Bar Harbor on the same day. As a result, the town most likely will get only a couple hundred passengers ashore on cruise ship days — below the daily 1,000-passenger limit and far below the 2,000 to 5,000 passengers that have sometimes come ashore when multiple ships are in town at the same time.

But when the new limit will be fully enforced is a heated subject of debate  in Bar Harbor, where the council says it will honor reservations made by large ships before voters approved the new limits on Nov. 8, 2022. Charles Sidman , a local resident who spearheaded the referendum vote, is taking the town to court to try to legally compel it to enforce the cap now.

In addition, a coalition of local businesses is challenging the new daily limit in federal court, arguing that it runs counter to federal maritime law and is unfairly onerous. A federal judge upheld the new daily limit  in February, but the business group has said it intends to appeal the decision.

Regardless of which entity prevails in court, the number of annual cruise ship visits to Bar Harbor, which gets millions of visitors each year who arrive each year by car or bus, already is declining and likely will never regain the volume of recent years.

Outside the COVID-19 pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 — when the global cruise ship industry ground to a halt and no ships came to Bar Harbor  — the town recently has averaged roughly 150 visits each year, all between late April and early November, and received an annual total between 200,000 and 250,000 passengers. This year, even if large ships are allowed, the town will get fewer than 200,000 passengers for the first time — apart from 2020 and 2021 — since 2016.

lobster tours bar harbor maine

After cruise ships first started showing up sporadically off Bar Harbor in the 1980s, their numbers jumped above 50 per year in 2001 and then above 100 per year in 2008. The town’s first year with more than 100,000 cruise ship passengers was in 2004, when it welcomed 87 ships into Frenchman Bay.

Along the way, the town has worked with local cruise industry officials to find ways to manage the flow of passengers to and from the downtown waterfront. It moved anchorage points in the bay behind the Porcupine Islands to make the ships less visually imposing from downtown, and tried making adjustments to how tour buses come and go from West Street to relieve traffic congestion, even as the number of visits consistently increased over time.

But as complaints continued to come in, the town decided in 2021 — when annual visits to Acadia National Park soared to more than 4 million  — to conduct a survey to ask local people what they thought about local cruise ship traffic. More than half  of the survey’s respondents said the volume of cruise ship visits was hurting the town.

With the writing on the wall, both town officials and local cruise industry officials began discussing how to reduce the number  of large ships that visit each year.

Together, they came up with a plan to impose a daily passenger cap of 3,800 passengers for May, June, September and October, and a daily cap of 3,500 for July and August. They also agreed on monthly caps of 30,000 passengers in May and June, 40,000 in July and August, and 65,000 in September and October.

But Sidman’s 2022 citizens’ petition effort, which led to the November referendum that year, derailed that plan.

For now, with Bar Harbor officials saying they plan to honor large cruise ship reservations made prior to the November 8, 2022 vote, the number of visits scheduled for 2025 stands at 18, all of which are large ships that together would bring nearly 57,000 ship passengers to town between late August and early October. The Regal Princess, which carries 3,560 passengers, would be the final large ship to visit Bar Harbor, on Oct. 28, 2025.

All large ship reservation requests that have come in since residents approved the daily 1,000-passenger cap have been denied, according to town officials.
