The Santa Maria is an unassuming cruise ship that actually looks like it might be a budget option from the outside. However, once you venture inside, you will see that the interior is very nicely designed and oozes that luxury vibe.

I have to be honest though, there are others in this list (Aspira & La Pandora) that are a similar price and provide a much more luxurious and unique experience compared to Santa Maria. Things To Do On Your 2 Night Halong Bay Cruise

Most of the following activities and facilities are present in all of the 2 night Halong Bay cruises in this list. However, there are a few that do not have some of them (like the on-ship pool) so make sure you double-check if something is a must-have!

There will be at least one opportunity to go Kayaking in Halong Bay during your 2-night cruise, probably two. I highly recommend doing this as there is something completely awesome about paddling through this incredible natural landscape. Many people stayed on the boat during the kayak activity, don’t be one of them.

I had never done Karaoke before our Halong Bay cruise, and I’ll probably never do it again… There is something oddly rewarding about sitting on a chair in front of people you’ve never met and singing an odd James Blunt song (3 wise men). Either way, it was actually really fun and some of the other passengers got up and danced as we sang on the stage which was great!

There is always a bar. It’s kind of a rule of life actually but this is also the case on 2 night Halong Bay cruises. I can’t think of a much better way to spend my time watching the sunset on our own private balcony in the middle of Halong Bay with a bottle of nice wine with Jade. The drinks are quite pricey but that’s something you should expect in the middle of the sea.

There will be plenty of opportunities to swim throughout your 2 night Halong bay cruise. Some of the boats have on-ship pools but you will also be able to jump into the sea at scheduled stops. Some of them even have inflatables in the sea for you to enjoy. All of the ships have lifejackets for safety but you won’t have to wear them if you are a strong swimmer.

Squid Fishing

Squid fishing is almost always advertised as one of the evening activities. However, I would avoid it, even if you are a keen angler. hardly anyone ever catches anything and it is a little boring, I have to be honest. And this is coming from someone who grew up fishing and absolutely loves it.

Visiting The Islands

Most tours will have at least one stop at one of the more well-known islands to have a beach day or visit one of the incredible lookouts or cave systems. These are all optional but I would recommend going over and having a look unless you really want to make the most of the boat facilities and the cruise experience.

Do you want to wake up really early and do Tai Chi on the top deck for the sunrise? If you watched our video then you might be thinking ‘how the hell did they manage that after that crazy evening?’ and you’d be right to think it. I found out that 6:00 am Tai Chi actually really helps with a hangover… or was it the fact that we went back to sleep afterward… Who knows?

Cooking Class

The cooking class will probably consist of making traditional Vietnamese spring rolls. Don’t expect a really professional cooking class that you might receive on a dedicated cooking school tour. However, it is a bit of fun and helps to break up the day a bit with a fun activity. The local tourists don’t usually get involved (I was told this was because they probably already knew how to make spring rolls) and this means that the cooking class shouldn’t be too busy.

Some of the more luxurious cruise ships have an onboard spa. This is a fantastic opportunity to book yourself in to get a massage whilst looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows and watching the incredible Halong Bay scenery float by.

No. There are 3 or 4-night itineraries on Halong bay cruises as well. However, 2-night is one of the 2 most common itineraries.

If I booked 1 night, can I extend one more night on Halong Bay cruises?

Yes. You can surely extend one more night. However, the different program between the 1-night and 2-night itinerary is Day 2. You should ask for an extension in advance of your travel date. In case you are on the cruise already, the duration extension is subject to availability and you may experience the repeated itinerary.

If my parents will not join many activities, is 3 days/2 nights suitable for them?

Yes. 3 days/2 nights is suitable for all travelers. The itinerary is not only for more activities but also more relaxation and a less rushed itinerary. Your parents can absolutely enjoy the time onboard and view Halong Bay.

How many meals are included in a 3 day 2 night itinerary?

The 3 day 2 night itinerary will include lunch-dinner on Day 1, breakfast-lunch-dinner on Day 2, and breakfast-lunch on Day 3.

Are lunches and dinners on the 1st and 2nd night the same?

No. For all 3 day 2 night passengers, the lunch and dinner on the 2nd night will be changed. Kindly note that the lunch on Day 2 is usually served on the day boat.

Do we change the cruise on Day 2?

Usually, a small boat will pick you up on Day 2 for excursions until the afternoon. You will come back to your main boat at around 3:00 - 4:00 pm depending on each itinerary.

Can we skip the morning activities and just join the afternoon ones on Day 2?

No. On Day 2, the day boat will pick you up for excursions and you will not have access to your cruise until afternoon. If you do not move to the day boat in the morning, you will stay on the cruise while it comes back to the cruise pier, drops off the current passengers, and picks up new ones.

Is there the same cooking class and sunset party on the 2nd night?

Yes. Onboard activities are repeated no matter the short or long itineraries. You can join once again or choose to join on the first or second night. Besides, since Day 2 is usually more active than other days, you are suggested to join these activities on the first and simply rest and relax on the second night.

Which cruises include a biking trip to Viet Hai Village? Do we stay for one night on Cat Ba island in a 3 day 2 night itinerary?

Many cruises offer a biking trip to Viet Hai Village such as Heritage, Orchid, Genesis, Elite of the Seas, Scarlet Pearl, etc. There are currently no cruises offering 1 night on Cat Ba Island. You just visit Cat Ba Island in the daytime and overnight onboard.

Which is best for 3 days and 2 nights, Halong, Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long Bay?

All three bays offer a variety of activities on a 3 day 2 night itinerary. Depending on your preference, if you want to see the renowned World’s Heritage Site with more bustling attractions, choose Halong bay. If you prefer more quietness and secluded attractions, Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay would be ideal.

3 Day Cruise Itinerary

Though more costly than an overnight trip, 3 day 2 night itinerary is widely favored by visitors who can afford both time and budget. Similar to 2 day 1 night itineraries, a 3 day 2 night itinerary also starts at noon on the first day and ends at that time on the third day. As a result, travelers will have a total of almost 48 hours on the boat.

Why is a 3 day 2 night itinerary recommended?

Access to more secluded part of the Bay

The shorter duration offers access to classic stopping points  of Halong bay so you will run into more tourists along the way. On the other hand, a 2-night itinerary brings you to visit the much further areas and enjoy the unbeatable tranquility on the second day. Moreover, since there are not many guests choosing 2 nights, the second day would be the highlight of the whole trip thanks to the maximum privacy and less-crowded attractions.

• Leisurely schedule

Although the 1-night trip offers both recreation and relaxation activities, visitors still find it a bit busy due to the continuous transfer from/to Hanoi in 2 days and a bunch of onboard activities to try. Choosing a 2-night itinerary will provide you with more resting time among activities. Better still, you can take advantage of the repeated onboard activities on the first or second night to choose the most suitable time to join without missing any.

What activities are included in 3 day 2 night itinerary?

Normally, Day 1 and 3 in the 2-night itinerary are the same as Day 1 and 2 in the 1-night itinerary. The difference is on Day 2 when visitors are transferred to a smaller boat to easily access further parts of the bay. Guests join the day boat for excursions and come back to the big boat in the late afternoon.

After check-in onboard, travelers check in the cabin and rest a bit before lunch is served in the dining area. The ship starts cruising to Halong Bay, crosses some signature islands and islets of the bay, and arrives at the first stop at the time you finish your lunch. Travelers have around 1 - 1.5 hours at the first point. Some cruises include 2 outdoor activities in the afternoon while some have only one and provide more time for relaxation.

After excursions, guests are invited to take advantage of onboard facilities such as a spacious sundeck for sunset watching, a swimming pool for relaxing, a mini golf course or club for entertaining, and so on.

A cooking class, sunset party, or Happy Hour are unmissable activities before dinner. In the evening, no shortage of recreational and relaxation programs are available such as squid fishing, massage service, games, etc. End of Day 1.

Starting with Taichi on the sundeck, Day 2 is full of outdoor activities. After savoring breakfast, a Day boat picks you up for excursions. It could be a full day of kayaking and swimming or leisurely lay down on a pristine beach. Those who book a Lan Ha Bay cruise may join a cycling trip on Cat Ba Island as well.

A Vietnamese-styled lunch will be served on the day boat. You continue the afternoon activities or can opt to stay on the boat to rest, sightsee and enjoy the serenity of the secluded area.

The day trip will finish at around 15:00-16:00 and you will come back to your main vessel, relax in the cabin or join the trip with new passengers.

10 Reasons To Love Capella Cruise - Best Halong Bay Cruise For Families

T he choices are plentisome (and overwhelming) when it comes to cruising Ha Long Bay. As you walk down the port in Ha Long City, and then watch further into the bay, dozens and hundreds of boats and ships of all shapes and sizes, fill up the incredible landscape. So which one should you choose when traveling with children?

We have three kids and wanted to overnight several nights on Ha Long Bay. We went with Capella Cruise and we can’t recommend them enough! Here are 10 things to know about the best Ha Long Bay cruise for families on Capella Cruise:

1- Capella Cruise Has The Only Water Slide In Ha Long Bay!

Probably not your number 1 priority when shopping for an Ha Long Bay cruise, but hey, for all it’s worth, our family loved it and its spices up the cruise! Also… if your kids see it and you’re on another ship… good luck!

2- Capella Cruise Family Rooms

The family rooms are the first reason we considered Capella Cruise, amongst the hundreds of other choices!

On most other cruise lines, you get very small cabins, and when you travel with children, they sleep on narrow beds, hard mattresses, and the beds go up in the walls during the day. On Capella Cruise, however, the Family Suite is a very large, 2-room suite, with the parental room and its gigantic bed, and a kids’ room with three individual beds. The mattresses and the bedding are the very best!

Every bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with a standalone tub over viewing the bay! The Family Suite has a built-in tub, but the view is just as fantastic! And everyone has a large balcony as well!

In the room, you will find refillable water bottles, with water stations scattered around the ship, as well as Crocs for the whole family, to wear in the cabin or around the ship.

3- Daily Water Activities

Every day after lunch, Capella Cruise anchors in a beautiful bay, surrounded by some of the most gorgeous scenery our planet has to offer.

For a few hours, you are free to kayak anywhere in the bay. Our kids absolutely loved it – they even took naps on the kayak! We spotted locals’ graves on some of the islands, purple crabs, and giant jellyfish (they don’t sting and are a sight to see)!

The use of kayaks is free and included with your cruise – you will be given a life jacket. You can also rent stand-up paddle boards if you wish.

It is during water activities that the slide is open, and you are welcome to swim in the bay as well, enjoy the pool and hot tub, or just jump off the boat, if that’s what your active kiddos prefer to do!

4- All-Inclusive Excursions

Alright – the real reason you are coming to Ha Long Bay, Vietnam and what makes a good experience, great! The excursions are all included in the price of the Capella Cruise!!

You may be very happy to just cruise along the bay and take in the scenery – however, going out and experiencing the islands is the only way to fully take it in.

Depending on the the length of your cruise, you can experience the following excursions, with guides from the ship:

• Bicycle (or golf cart) tour on Cat Ba Island – the only inhabited island in Ha Long Bay: there you will partake in a foot fish massage, tasting of interesting local wines (think cobra wine!!), get a quick geography lesson, and cycle through gorgeous nature
• Three Peach Beach: a quick but sweet stop over at this golden sand beach. The water, a little cold for our liking, was beautiful, and our kids preferred to build a fort on the beach instead. Love that Capella Cruise brings all towels and water bottles on board the speed boat, so you don’t have to!
• Dry cave visit: after a quick speed boat trip, followed by a 15-minute car ride to another part of Cat Ba Island, visit this beautiful dry cave, accompanied by a guide from the ship. Dong Trung Trang is super fun, and unlike most caves, it is over ground, so the temperature is quite warm.
• On disembarkation day, board a bamboo boat to this ocean Dark & Bright Cave, where you can hope to spot one of only 80 langur monkeys left in the world. The government is trying to bring them all to this area of Cat Ba island, to help with conserving and growing the species, as it is one of the most endangered species on the planet. Quick tip – keep an eye out for moving foliage!

5- The Food!!!

We could not believe the gastronomic journey that was Capella Cruise. As with excursion, everyone has the same first dinner, second dinner, and so on. We sailed for 3 nights and all three dinners were incredible!

Dinner is a set menu, but before embarking, you will be asked about food allergies and preferences. From there, the chef will make the necessary changes. I am allergic to oysters and was brought other seafood when oysters were on the menu. We saw several vegetarians being served a totally different menu than ours.

Typically, breakfast and lunch are buffets, though we’ve had a sit-down lunch as well.

We loved being served lunch on embarkation day, as well as breakfast + brunch on disembarkation day. So no one went hungry between leaving the ship and getting back to Hanoi.

6- Different Lengths Of Stay Every Day

This one is a bit of a hard concept to grab, especially if you are used to cruising. With Capella Cruise, your family can choose to cruise 1, 2, or 3 nights (that is, until a new ship is added to the fleet). Because Ha Long Bay is fairly small, the ship anchors in the same anchorage every night, and moves back towards the port to pick up new passengers every day.

While the ship moves back closer to Ha Long City, if you are in between two nights, you will be away on your excursion. On any given day, day 1, 2, and 3 excursions are offered, and depending on which day of YOUR cruise it is, you will partake in that program. So everyone’s Day 1 is the same, no matter the day of the week you embarked.

Here’s the schedule, to help you decide on how many night work best for your family (if you ask me, 3 nights is a must!):

1 NIGHT – lunch and water activities upon embarking the ship, then happy hour en route to the night anchorage, dinner and squid fishing. The next morning, wake up early to visit the Dark & Bright Cave, before enjoying a brunch and disembarkation around 11AM

2 NIGHTS – Embarkation day is the same as for 1-nighters, but as you wake on your first morning, you will board a speed boat to Cat Ba island and enjoy the bike (or golf cart) tour and everything that visit entails, and some beach time at Three Peach Beach. Your second day will be the Dark & Bright Cave / brunch / disembarkation.

3 NIGHTS – Adding on to the 2-night itinerary from above, on your last full day, you will board a speed boat to Cat Ba island and visit Dong Trung Trang Cave! Disembarkation days is Dark & Bright Cave / brunch / disembarkation.

At the end of each excursion, the speed boat will take you back to the anchorage near the city, when you will have lunch shortly after the new guests embark. From there awaits a daily afternoon of water activities.

7- Squid Fishing

Depending on your level of comfort with fishing, this can be a really neat thing to experience. We had never even heard of squid fishing, but squid is plentiful in Ha Long Bay and every night, sailors can fish with the crew. The squid is prepared fresh the following day and it is a very cool experience offered by Capella Cruise, where the kids are more than welcome to join!

8- Getting To Ha Long Made Easy

While we did not use the premium shuttle offered by Capella Cruise, know that it is available. It will pick you up in Hanoi city and drop you off at the cruise terminal, and take you back again after the cruise.

9- Daily Snacks and Happy Hour

Between water activities and dinner, there is about an hour of sailing. We recommend hitting the top decks for a 360-view and for free snacks.

The tropical fruits are amazing and plentiful and Capella Cruise adds some other finger food. It is best enjoyed watching the sun set on this UNESCO World Heritage Site, cocktail in hand, during the buy-2-get-1-free Happy Hour.

10- Daily Cooking Demonstrations

Every night, between Happy Hour and dinner is a cooking demonstration. A member of the crew will teach guests how to make the famous spring rolls. Sailors can partake in the class and roll their own rolls, which are later fried and enjoyed as the night falls!

While I am sure other cruise lines do a fine job at hosting families, we can’t recommend Capella Cruise enough when cruising overnight with kids on Halong Bay!
