Madonna's souvenir of her 2012/2013 world tour is her fourth live album and, like so many live albums from the new millennium, it is a multi-media spectacle that perhaps would make more sense as an at-home video experience than an aural adventure. That said, there are unexpected musical moments that do make MDNA World Tour worth hearing: "Like a Virgin" is spun into a waltz, "Like a Prayer" is given a dark disco makeover, and there is a general enthusiasm for Madge's newest material, as evidenced by the emphasis on MDNA and Confessions on a Dance Floor material in the set list. This concentration on newer material does mean this is a live album for the dedicated, but that is true for any live album released three decades into an artist's career. It boils down to this: if you think you're interested in hearing the MDNA World Tour, the nerviness of this performance is just enough to make your investment of time worthwhile. © Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Madonna is set to vogue her way around the world on her MDNA concert tour, which kicks off Thursday in Tel Aviv — and she’s enlisted a cadre of designers to create an array of showstopping looks for the stage.

The Material Girl’s parade of costume changes includes outfits from longtime collaborators Jean Paul Gaultier and Jeremy Scott, shoes from Prada and Miu Miu and pieces from Alexander Wang. Dolce & Gabbana made suits for the band and background vocalists, Fausto Puglisi created menacing bandolier vests and rams head masks for the backup dancers and even J Brand whipped up custom-made jeans.

Bras and panties — including one heart-shaped style from Madonna’s new intimates line Truth or Dare — are incorporated into some numbers, as are shoes from the new Truth or Dare footwear line, at retail this fall. A somber, elegiac version of the usually peppy “Like a Virgin” will be sung by Madonna in an Agent Provocateur bra.

“It’s a real journey from the first act to the fourth, and the way she constructs her shows is like a theater piece,” said costume designer and stylist Arianne Phillips, who oversaw the entire wardrobe design for Madonna, her backup singers, musicians and 22 backup dancers. Scott, for his part, has been camped out in Tel Aviv this week, working till the last minute on some costumes.

The original Gaultier design is worn during the “Vogue” number and includes a white shirt, black tie, opera-length black gloves and a rigid skeleton corset. The getup references the iconic pink bustier-with-pin-striped suit look the designer created for Madonna’s 1990 Blond Ambition world tour, widely considered a pinnacle of both of their careers.

“We played with the ideas of a suit and a corset. But the corset is now like a cage,” explained Gaultier. “What I have done this time is a nod to the conical bra corset of the Blond Ambition tour but reinterpreted in 3-D, in patent leather on the outside with metallic leather on the inside. It’s all about masculine and feminine, Madonna and Jean Paul Gaultier classics reinterpreted for 2012.”

The designer and Phillips also re-created some archival Gaultier pieces for Madonna’s dancers, as an homage to his long relationship with the iconic singer. Gaultier was also responsible for the kinky equestrian and “Saturday Night Fever”-inspired looks of Madonna’s 2006 Confessions tour, and she once walked his runway with her nipples exposed.

“I love Madonna. She is the only woman I have asked to marry me. She refused, of course,” added Gaultier. “But when she asked me to do a costume for her for this tour, I couldn’t refuse.”

Prada created high-heeled shoes for the male dancers in the gender-bending “Vogue” performance, which includes imagery of the Vogue magazine logo on massive video screens — similar to Madonna’s Super Bowl performance of the song, which was viewed by 117 million people .

“This show is epic and bigger than anything she’s done before. There are many more costume changes. We’re taking 700 shoes on the road. Madonna changes outfits seven or eight times and the dancers change 10 to 15 times, depending on the dancer,” said Phillips of the production, which includes multiple appearances on stage by two of Madonna’s children, Lourdes and Rocco, in supporting roles.

Prada has supplied custom-made shoes for many of Madonna’s previous tours, noted Phillips. “They have been generous for so many years. Her relationship with them is really special. Everything is specially made and they made some incredible high-heeled boots for the boys,” she added.

Phillips, who has done the costumes for Madonna’s four previous tours, designed a number of looks herself, delivering a wide range for her famously chameleonlike boss. The lineup veers from a forbidding Joan of Arc-inspired outfit fashioned from metal mesh and Swarovski Elements to a vernal, miniskirted majorette getup for the 53-year-old “Girl Gone Wild” singer.

“It’s inspired by a 1940s majorette and I was looking for something playful and fun,” explained Phillips.

Masks are a big component to many outfits, with dancers hiding their faces behind gargoyle and bunny guises. “The show explores the idea of stripping away layers of identity and discovering the layers of who you are,” said Phillips. There’s a menacing streak to some looks, with themes of violence explored in certain segments, which are accessorized with swords, guns, armor and holsters.

One designer missing from the MDNA tour roster is Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci, who designed the showboating Cleopatra-on-Mars outfit Madonna donned for her Super Bowl performance . Phillips attributed Tisci’s absence from the collaborator list to scheduling conflicts.

Madonna herself was closely involved with the show’s costume design, said Phillips, who was nominated for an Oscar for her work on Madonna’s film “W.E.” earlier this year. “This is her brainchild and her concept. We have a 15-year relationship and there’s a rhythm to how we collaborate. She’s very open-minded but she expects a lot,” she explained. “She’s always challenging herself and pushing herself constantly to learn new things and she pushes me further than I would myself. When you’re on the world stage with her, you really have to bring your A game.”

As for the media dustup this week when Madonna supposedly lobbed a grenade at Lady Gaga by mashing up her own “Express Yourself” with Lady Gaga’s allegedly reductive “Born This Way” in rehearsals, it wasn’t just a ploy for attention and it’s part of the permanent show. At the end of the song, Madonna throws in the line “She’s Not Me,” from her recent song of the same name.

“Whether it’s an homage or a smack in the face or just being funny, I don’t know,” said Liz Rosenberg, Madonna’s spokeswoman. “People can decide what it means. Madonna isn’t one to explain herself.”

"Vogue" is a song by American singer Madonna from her second soundtrack album I'm Breathless (1990). It was released as the first single from the album on March 27, 1990, by Sire Records. Madonna was inspired by vogue dancers and choreographers Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza and Luis Xtravaganza from the Harlem "House Ball" community, the origin of the dance form, and they introduced "Vogueing" to her at the Sound Factory club in New York City. Salma Hayek Joins Madonna for ‘Vogue’ in Mexico City

Madonna performed her penultimate concert on her massive Celebration Tour in Mexico City on Friday night, and to mark the occasion she invited surprise guest Salma Hayek . The actress served as a judge during the “Vogue” ballroom competition at Madonna’s concert at the Palacio de Los Deportes.

Hayek shared videos and photos from the moment via Instagram on Saturday. Channeling Frida Kahlo — the legendary painter whom the actress portrayed in the 2002 film — with her vibrant ensemble, she is seen in a Vogue pose and on stage beside Madonna ready to share score cards as a ballroom judge of the dancers’ performances during “Vogue.”

“Thank you so much @madonna for letting me be a part of your iconic celebration tour,” Hayek captioned the post. “This unforgettable night goes in my bag of precious treasures. #VIVAMEXICO #VIVAMADONNA .”

Madonna’s final tour stop is a big one, in fact it’s slated to draw her biggest crowd yet. On May 4, she concludes the tour with a free show at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro,  Brazil .

The performance marks the star’s first time performing in Brazil since 2012 (during her MDNA run), and is billed to be “a thank you to her fans for celebrating more than four decades of her music over the course of the epic global run of the tour.”

Madonna in Rio: Behind the Scenes of the Negotiation for One of the Biggest Shows in History

The pop icon will finish her Celebration Tour with a free concert at Copacabana Beach on May 4. This is how it came to be.

Imagine the scene: One of the greatest pop artists in history is in the middle of the Palais Garnier, the imposing house of the Paris Opera. Then, with her blue eyes fixed on the camera, she says an entirely off-script phrase: “ Brazil , I’m coming.”

But back then, in November 2023, there was nothing certain, not even close, for Madonna to take her Celebration Tour to Brazil . On the contrary, it was rumored that this would be an almost impossible mission due to technical reasons.

 It was up to the bank to pull strings to make it happen. But they were running out of time.

“The day after the shoot, we watched her show in Paris and realized that the structure would be complicated to adapt to a large crowd like the one we wanted. Because of this, Guy Oseary [the singer’s manager] poured cold water on us,” Smith says.

The following week, legendary businessman Luiz Oscar Niemeyer from Bonus Track, a “key player” in the process, appeared on the scene. Niemeyer is a pioneer in the international concert market in Brazil, responsible for Paul McCartney’s record attendance at Maracanã in 1993 (and for all of McCartney’s subsequent visits to Brazil) and the performance by The Rolling Stones on Copacabana Beach, among many other historic events.

So there were two players: the biggest bank in Latin America that already had a close relationship with Madonna, and an experienced producer used to dealing with the biggest names in showbiz. But destiny sometimes plays tricks.

“I had already tried to bring Madonna in 2006, without success, and I had already been talking to Live Nation, responsible for the Celebration Tour, but Madonna had that health problem last year, and the tour was postponed,” explains Niemeyer, or “LON” for those closest to him.

In mid-February (just over two months before the show date), negotiations intensified with Niemeyer back on track. “We became very close [to Niemeyer] and exchanged lots of info, like a task force to make this show possible, because Itaú had a contract with Madonna and Bonus Track, with Live Nation,” says Smith. “It was Saturday, Sunday, sometimes 3 am, and Luiz Oscar and I were in meetings with teams from outside Brazil.”

And the teams for everything related to Madonna, of course, are quite rigorous. “We have to deliver a show complying with the level of production that it presents around the world, naturally adapted for a much larger space. Only when we had the resizing of this structure, sponsorships, television broadcasting and technical issues approved was the deal finally closed,” explains Niemeyer, stressing that leaks about the show that took over the Internet in the weeks before the official announcement did not interfere in the negotiations.

According to him, from the beginning, the idea was that the show at Princesinha do Mar would close the Celebration Tour as “a great gift for Brazilian fans.” “It was a great choice – a Saturday, we have a holiday in the middle of the week, and more people can visit the city,” says Niemeyer.

Madonna reflects on end of 'entire artistic career' after celebrating her children for support after near-death experience

The "vogue" singer is a mom of six, all of whom have made appearances on the celebration tour.

Madonna's four decade-long career-spanning world tour, The Celebration Tour , is nearly at its conclusion . After opening last October following months of delay, the tour finally wrapped its planned list of shows last week.

The 65-year-old played Mexico City on April 26, bringing out celebrity guest Salma Hayek for the concert's voguing segment ( dressed in a Frida Kahlo-inspired outfit ), and shared a new social media post looking back on her expansive tour and legacy as an artist.

The last show of the tour ended in Mexico City in the most magical way," she wrote. "Frida Kahlo came to visit and made me the happiest girl in the world!"

"Not only was my show complete in Mexico – but my entire artistic career!!" Madonna penned. "For she has always been my eternal muse cheering me on through the good times and the bad."

She shared a word of gratitude for Salma and her fans, adding: "Thank You @salmahayek for making it possible. And Thank You to my fans, not only in Mexico but all over the world. We did it together!! 80 shows! I feel Love."

Her followers praised the musical legend and expressed excitement for the tour's final show, a newly announced free concert in Rio de Janeiro at the Copacabana Beach, which promises to be a massive show to close out the tour as a thank you to fans.

Days before the final show, Madonna shared another post that celebrated her six children, all of whom have been involved with The Celebration Tour in some way, particularly her four youngest, David, Mercy James, and her twins Stella and Estere .

Those four have performed consistently on the tour, especially David, 18, as a guitarist , Mercy James, also 18, as a pianist, and Estere, 11, as one of the voguers.

She shared her undying love for her children, especially in the wake of her experience with a serious bacterial infection last year, which caused the opening of the tour to be delayed by three months.

"On the day before our 80th show of the Celebration Tour I need to acknowledge my incredibly talented children who carried me through this journey, each of them bringing their own unique talent to the stage," she lovingly wrote.

"Rehearsals began over a year ago with almost a two month break waiting for me recover from a near death experience. They never stopped practicing… they never stopped cheering me on and supporting me."

"[Their] enthusiasm kept me going!!!" she continued. "They were also going to school and rehearsing every night!! I am so very proud of all of them."

The "Like a Prayer" hitmaker concluded with: "I think what my children learned the most this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you want to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them. And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears. Nor will I. It's a CELEBRATION!"

Falta muito pouco para o show histórico de Madonna no Brasil. A Rainha do Pop, que se apresenta neste sábado (4) na praia de Copacabana, em frente ao histórico hotel Copacabana Palace, no Rio de Janeiro, fará o encerramento de sua turnê The Celebration Tour gratuitamente direto de terras tupiniquins, apresentando alguns dos mais importantes hits de sua carreira.

Parte das comemorações dos seus quarenta anos nos palcos, o show tem tudo para ser um dos momentos musicais mais importantes do país e, de longe, a passagem mais marcante da artista no Brasil, que já esteve por aqui durante a turnê The Girlie Show , em 1993, na Sticky and Sweet Tour , de 2008 e na MDNA em 2012.

Embora ainda não se saiba qual será o setlist oficial do espetáculo, já que as músicas da turnê variaram ao longo das apresentações, já é esperado que algumas de suas canções mais icônicas apareçam na performance. Afinal, são 14 álbuns lançados e dezenas de músicas que marcaram época.

Sempre polêmica, Madonna lançou hits com letras poderosas e contestadoras, que criticavam a política, a religião e o próprio american way of life. 7. Like a Virgin

Segundo álbum de estúdio de Madonna, Like a Virgin  é um LP lançado em 1984, que consolidou de vez a artista na indústria musical. Com um visual icônico, reproduzido não apenas no encarte do álbum, mas também nas apresentações da cantora — em que chegou a se vestir como uma noiva sensual — o disco ditou tendências de moda e foi responsável por algumas de suas primeiras polêmicas.

Marcado pelo dance-pop da década de 80 e com influências da new wave, o trabalho falava muito sobre amor, sexo e materialismo e ficou especialmente marcado pela faixa homônima, Like a Virgin , além dos singles Material Girl e Angels . Durante a reedição do álbum para fora da América do Norte, a canção Into The Groove , feita para o filme Procura-se Susan Desesperadamente , também se tornou bastante famosa.

6. Like A Prayer

Lançado em 1989, após uma conturbada fase da vida de Madonna, em que a cantora terminou seu relacionamento com Sean Penn, perdeu a mãe e foi duramente criticada por suas atuações no cinema, Like A Prayer serviu como uma descarga emocional no trabalho da artista. Quarto álbum de estúdio da compositora, ele é considerado por muitos o seu projeto mais atemporal, em que conseguiu abordar questões mais adultas e profundas.

Essencialmente pop, mas com elementos de dance, soul e rock, o álbum, inclusive, foi o primeiro em que Madonna se debruçou sobre questões religiosas, chegando a ser excomungada da Igreja Católica por suas provocações — ela repetiria esse “feito” por ainda mais duas vezes. Além da faixa título Like A Prayer , o álbum conta ainda com canções icônicas como Express Yourself , Cherish , Oh Father e Keep It Together .

Um dos mais provocativos trabalhos de Madonna, Erotica é o seu quinto álbum de estúdio, lançado ao mesmo tempo em que o seu livro Sex , com fotos eróticas da artista, chegava às livrarias. Focado em letras que falavam sobre prazer, mas também em questões espinhosas como a AIDS, o masoquismo e a homofobia, o disco chamou atenção e foi considerado pela crítica um dos projetos mais ousados da cantora.

Com elementos de techno e hip-hop e apresentações que quase sempre giravam em torno da estética dominatrix, Erotica chegou a posição número 2 da Billboard 200 em 1992. Além da música título, que ganhou um dos clipes mais inesquecíveis da carreira de Madonna, os títulos Fever , Deeper and Deeper e Bad Girl também tocaram incessantemente nas rádios.

4. Ray of Light

Sétimo álbum de estúdio de Madonna e primeiro a ser lançado após o nascimento de sua filha, Lourdes Maria, Ray of Light é um disco de 1998 que sintetiza o pop dos anos 90, embebido pela música eletrônica da época. Focado em questões mais introspectivas e espirituais da vida da cantora, que havia se convertido para a Cabala, ele foi a prova de que Madonna podia se reinventar, conquistando outras gerações de fãs.

Vencedor de quatro Grammys, Ray of Light vendeu nada menos do que dezesseis milhões de unidades e transformou sua faixa título em uma das músicas mais incessantemente tocadas naquele ano na MTV. Além disso, as canções Frozen , Nothing Really Matters e Drowned World / Substitute For Love foram muito aclamadas pelo público.

Indo por um caminho pop diferente, Music , oitavo álbum lançado por Madonna, trouxe a tona elementos de country e folk em sua sonoridade e visual — não à toa, a compositora parece como uma cowgirl na capa do disco e no clipe de Don't Tell Me . Além disso, ele também contou com influências da música eletrônica, sendo um dos álbuns mais dançantes da carreira da artista.

Lançado em 2020, Music fala muita sobre amor, festas e comemorações, temas que conquistaram o público e fizeram o álbum estrear em primeiro lugar na Billboard 200. Além da faixa título, que dominou as paradas em 25 países, o disco estourou também com a já mencionada Don't Tell Me , What It Feels Like for a Girl e Impressionante Instant .

2. Confessions on a Dance Floor

Acredite ou não, até a Madonna já teve a sua fase disco. Confessions on a Dance Floor , décimo álbum da cantora, lançado em 2005, é um disco que explora gêneros como o dance, o club e o electropop. Um dos mais bem-sucedidos de sua carreira, tendo sido o sexto mais vendido naquele ano, ele é cheio de referências a grandes outros artistas dos anos 1970 e 1980.

Bastante diferente de um álbum comum, ele é estruturado como se fosse o setlist de um DJ, não tendo paradas entre as músicas. A estranheza, no entanto, deu muito certo e além de Hung Up , que se tornou um sucesso absoluto, Confessions on a Dance Floor ainda emplacou hits como Sorry , Get Together e Jump .

1. Madame X

Último álbum de estúdio lançado por Madonna, Madame X de 2019 é um projeto da artista que conta com participações especiais de inúmeros cantores, incluindo a brasileira Anitta, o colombiano Maluma e o DJ e produtor norte-americano Diplo. Influenciado pelo trap e pela música latina, o álbum é um projeto muito diferente da cantora, que apostou ainda em uma turnê bastante teatral.

Aclamado pela crítica internacional, especialmente por contar com músicas em inglês, espanhol e português, Madame X fala muito sobre liberdade de expressão e temas políticas como controle de armas e direitos LGBT. Além da canção Medellín com Maluma, o grande hit do disco, ele também fez sucesso com músicas como Crave , feita em parceria com o rapper Swae Lee e Faz Gostoso com Anitta.
