What did you find out, as I am looking at them for the same reasons?

I am considering Martin Randall Travel for a trip to Sicily in October 2015. Would appreciate any information anyone has about them.

I am not actually travelling till October so I only know them 'pre-trip'. So far, they are excellent -- responsive, helpful whenever they can be, well organized. They have provided a very comprehensive reading list on the history, art and land of Sicily.

My husband and I have been on a number of MR tours over the years. We have also used other tour companies both Australian and English based.

MR are outstanding - by far the best we have used. Their booking arrangements proceed smoothly, pre departure information is comprehensive, the tour leaders are knowledgeable and very personable. The tour managers take care of all details and ensure everyone's comfort. The hotels are always first class and often have an interest (historic, scenic, well positioned) in themselves.

The other tour members are pleasant, well travelled and interesting. Like us, many are regulars with MR.

I recommend them highly and he many friends who have taken my advice are also converts to the MR way of doing things.

I went on two combined tours to China with MRT in April-May 2015 and overall was fairly disappointed. Their much-vaunted claims of excellent customer service were simply untrue (an opinion shared by many people on the tours) as I found the office surprisingly disorganised, with endless mistakes or muddles, although where possible these were sorted out immediately with alacrity. I also found it difficult to get detailed advice from them. The tours were very well and carefully designed but I was disconcerted to find that the guests consisted almost entirely of elderly and retired people, many of them veteran MRT enthusiasts. Effectively the tours were tacitly arranged to accommodate this age group. There was an emphasis on leisurely lunches; and although the tours were led by extremely highly qualified experts, historical information was kept to a minimum, with long coach journeys sometimes almost devoid of information which I, together with other guests, found profoundly frustrating as the tours are sold as being fairly academic. A particular problem was that reading lists were described as optional, but weren’t, in view of the lack of basic information, and were only sent out two weeks before trips which had been organised for a year. The tours are expensive and I was astonished to find much of the expense reflected in glamorous hotels which at times seemed to have been chosen more for their bling than reflecting the culture or interest of China

I travelled with Martin Randall Travel last October, to Sicily. The tour was to focus on art, architecture and mosaics; and it lived up to that in excellent fashion. We had an in-country, Italian, tour guide for the logistics of getting us to where we were supposed to be on time, and also a lecturer (from Oxford Univ.) who knew pretty much everything there was to know about the art, architecture and mosaics of Sicily. The food and wine were superb and any special dietary needs were complied with quietly and with no fuss. We also got to visit places definitely not on the travelers' normal map. When I want to go on another art/culture/history tour of Europe, I will definitely check with Martin Randall Travel first.

We have travelled with Martin Randall almost every year for many years.

Everything about their programs is excellent from the planning and content of the tour, the knowledgeable, friendly lecturers, efficient and helpful tour organisers to the comfortable travel and accommodation arrangements. The many awards this company has received are well deserved.

At first glance their programs may seem expensive but when considering the quality of the content overall, they more than compare with other offerings.

We have travelled with Martin Randall almost every year for many years.

Everything about their programs is excellent from the planning and content of the tour, the knowledgeable, friendly lecturers, efficient and helpful tour organisers to the comfortable travel and accommodation arrangements. The many awards this company has received are well deserved.

At first glance their programs may seem expensive but when considering the quality of the content overall, they more than compare with other offerings.

My 2015 trip with them to Sicily was one of the best tours I have been on. Very efficient arrangements, both before and during the trip. The lecturer knew a tremendous amount about the art and history of Sicily (and several related subjects as well). The hotels were excellent, the food equally good. I am planning on going with them again this fall, on a tour of the West Bank/Judea-Samaria/Palestine, take your pick.

I have done three tours with MRT (one with my husband) and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I was a big fan, and would happily have gone on taking their tours every year or so for as long as I had the energy (or the money). On my recommendation a friend went on two of their tours recently: she enjoyed one, but had issues with the lecturer on the other. I encouraged her to raise this with the organisation, as MRT claim they take customer feedback very seriously.

The result was a quite astonishingly rude email from one of the directors, declaring my friend unsuitable for future MRT tours ('not a good fit' was the phrase).

Thinking this might be just one out-of-sorts, out-of-line employee, as all my contacts with the staff had been polite and amiable, I wrote a letter to the eponymous Martin, sending two copies airmail to the two addresses I found on the Internet to ensure that he actually read it. The response: another rude email, from some underling, rebuking me for my temerity in writing to The Great Man at his private address. (I didn't know it was his private address, but I do now ....) I was irresistibly reminded of Hillaire Belloc's Godolphin Horne, who 'was nobly born/ And held the human race in scorn'!

So I think we can conclude that this is a classic case of 'the fish rots from the head down'. To put it plainly, there must be a culture of arrogance in this pretentious organisation, which essentially exists to make lots of money out of luxury goods and services, in this case, 'culture' -- more specifically other peoples' cultures, in the best traditions of British Imperialism.

Travel with them if you wish, but be prepared to handle their dowager-duchess sensibilities with kid gloves. You may well risk a nasty dose of British upper-class incivility if you dare step out of line.

I shall begin my response by giving the context which is that very occasionally we have to tell someone that we think that our tours are not suitable for them. We take this step extremely rarely and only after very careful consideration; it is never simply because they have complained about a tour. 

To say that we welcome criticism might provoke a cynical response, but it is true – upsetting though it sometimes is. Only by treating feedback with respect and empathy can we hope to regain a dissatisfied client’s confidence in us and to ameliorate any disappointment. Every comment or complaint addressed to anyone in the company receives a timely, sympathetic and reasonable response (not for nothing have we been voted Best Small Tour Operator for Customer Service three years in succession).

Your assumption that you might not get a response unless a letter was addressed to the Chief Executive (me) at his home was wrong. I am sorry my (delegated) reply was terse, but I continue to maintain that your tactic was inappropriate. I work intensively and am often travelling, and though I am permanently on call in the event of an emergency, I am deeply protective of my privacy, not least for my family’s well-being.

I can say categorically that your inference that the cause of your friend’s exclusion was her dissatisfaction with the lecturer is wrong (though it is worth noting that the other participants on the tour rated highly the lecturer and the other ingredients of the tour). We would never, however, enter into discussions about such a case with a third party so I cannot comment further. 

I was amused by your anti-British rant, but as with most national prejudices, it is not so much wrong as half a century or more out of date. And yes, the study of ‘other people’s cultures’ is our mission. Though increasingly unfashionable in some quarters, I passionately believe that the study of other cultures (‘other’ because distanced by space or time) is valid not only in so far as the process provides enrichment and understanding but also because it dispels negative preconceptions and promotes tolerance and peace.

As you were once a participant in this noble enterprise, we would love to welcome you back one day. I am always very saddened to lose a client. I would highly recommend Martin Randall Travel for their specialist holidays. I have been on two music festivals where the programme was very well planned, with all concerts open only to MRT travellers and often in venues usually unavailable to the public, which is a plus. There were daily talks from top speakers, there were always plenty of staff around who were very friendly, helpful, willing yet unobtrusive. There was good food, wine, and the standard of hotels suited the majority of the travellers. The programme was full but leisurely - never a sense of rush. Travel to and from venues was extremely well organised and straightforward. Each festival had some leisure time with talks and concerts daily. Other customers, who were interesting to talk with, seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the whole experience and I did not hear a negative comment during the week. I will choose to travel with them again.

I have beeen travelling with MRT for some 10 years now, mostly solo, and it is rare that my (high) expectations are not exceeded by the quality of every aspect of the trip. Attention to detail seems to be the key - as so often in life.

Whether hiking the Camino de Santiago, luxuriating in the best seats at the opera in Seattle or Berlin, savouring the gastronomy of Italy or Kerala, or participating in philosophy symposia in Greece (wish they’d repeat that one!), I have always had a great time - because MRT deliver high standards in every particular - the basics obviously - accommodation, meals, itinerary, transport - but also - and most importantly - top grade lecturers and helpful tour managers. The music festivals are a delight and you can often combine that with walking.

I hope to continue travelling with MRT (Peru is booked for next year) because - and there’s the rub - they spoil you for the others!

Just enjoyed one of MRT's London walks. Wow - what a wealth of information and knowledge from the tour leader. We enjoyed many back streets and alleys, all full of history and different architecture.

Our stops en route were of top class and into buildings not easily available to the public

Certainly recommend

Went on a music festival in the Cotswolds last week, had a marvellous time. The overall organisation worked well and the hotel we selected from those offered was fantastic. The performances were in a variety of local churches, these all worked well and were worth a visit on their own. The music was all to the usual very high MR standards, and an absolute delight.

We have been on 30 Martin Randall trips since 2000 including London Days, music festivals in UK and abroad and art and history tours and without exception, all have exceeded our already high expectations. Superbly well organised, fascinating speakers and interesting companions. Expensive perhaps, but worth saving for.

I have been on several Martin Randall tours and thoroughly enjoyed them because:

1. The lecturers are knowledgeable. Some tours have taught me a lot about a certain subject, for example:

• Palladian Villas. I can now visit British country houses with a more knowledgeable eye.

• Vikings & Bog Men

• Dark Age Brilliance – This tour of Ravenna and Northeastern Italy brought alive to me the little known period of the late Roman Empire and Barbarian Invasions.

2. The tours are well-organised and efficient. The tour manager spends a lot of time telephoning to make certain that restaurants are ready. I am allergic to fish and seafood. Restaurants always had alternative dishes available for me without my having to remind the tour manager.

3. The tours are well and efficiently timed. I have been on other trips where no time limit is set on visits so people dawdle. We therefore miss something at the end of the day or end up driving back to the hotel for an hour or two in the dark when you can see nothing.

Martin Randall trips depart on time. If the program states that the coach will leave the hotel at 8:30am, all the passengers are on the coach at 8:30am. I have been on other tours where the coach almost always departs late because at least one of the passengers keeps the others waiting.

4. The tours are comfortable as Martin Randall groups stay in 4 or 5 star hotels. The hotels are usually in the centre of town, so you can use spare time to explore. On cheaper tours I have stayed in a hotel in a suburb where there is little to see.

5. Martin Randall provides a good standard of food. Many tours provide a mediocre lunch and a mediocre dinner. Rather than use the food budget to provide 2 average meals, Martin Randall provides one good meal a day, usually dinner.

If one goes to a restaurant in the middle of the day for an average 3 course meal, this takes 1.5 hours or longer. Martin Randall often provides one hour for lunch and arranges the tour so that the lunch hour is in a place where there is a choice of restaurants. You can therefore choose either a snack or a hot meal or in my case I prefer to spend the time visiting parts of the town that are not included in the itinerary. I find that if I have a good breakfast in the morning and a good dinner in the evening, I do not need to spend time eating much in the middle of the day.

6. Martin Randall tours often provide something special. For example in their tour of Rome they provide an evening private viewing of the Sistine Chapel when one can see it properly rather than with hundreds of tourists. On the walking tour of London I had a pleasant break for a glass of champaign in the Savoy Hotel. Another tour included lunch in a private room at the Athenaeum Club; while the tour of Versailles includes lunch in a Michelin star restaurant.

7. I have not met anyone unpleasant on the Martin Randall tour groups. One’s fellow passengers are interested in the arts, so there can be interesting discussions during dinner or on other occasions. On a recent tour in July 2018 there was a retired civil servant who had a lot of interesting things to say about the British Government’s publication of their Brexit strategy.

8. Martin Randall tours are more expensive than other tours; but I think it is well worth it. The Martin Randall tours are certainly much cheaper than travelling on one’s own with a driver and guide.

9. Some of the tours are more demanding intellectually and physically. The tours that I find great fun are the gastronomic tours with Gijs van Hensbergen in Spain. The time is pleasantly spent visiting the great museums and churches of Spain; but the pace is more relaxed in order to allow time for 3 hour lunches or dinners, when I face the challenge of getting through 6-12 courses rather than fitting in 2 churches and a museum before it gets dark.
