Miss Hampton II Cruises - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

The Miss Hampton II Magical History Tour:

A Leisurely Introduction to the Charms of Hampton, Virginia.

Hampton, Virginia is very much like your classic Southern lady: a combination of modern style and traditional values with a complicated, and sometimes dark, past. Once aware of her enigmatic presence, you’ll want to make her acquaintance. A three-hour harbor tour aboard the Miss Hampton II offers an excellent introduction to this Chesapeake charmer.

A warm, sunny day in May, 2018 was our opportunity to meet the oldest continuously occupied English settlement in the United States. Hey, I didn’t say Hampton was a young Southern lady. In fact, she’s more than 400 years old. So there was a lot to learn.

As Miss Hampton II made her way up the Hampton River into Hampton Roads Harbor, Simon, Otto and I soaked up the fine afternoon. on her deck as the historic and modern structures of Hampton seemed to glide by. In fact, we were the ones moving as Jim, our professional tour guide, pointed out significant buildings and sites. His narrative was informative and entertaining. As he recounted tales from the past and clued us in on things to do in Hampton, we began to understand the long journey the lady had taken in order to arrive in the present to stand poised on the threshold of a bright future.

Hampton from the Water

The Miss Hampton II pulled away from her berth on Historic Downtown Hampton’s waterfront promptly at 11:00am. Motoring out on the Hampton River, we caught site of the structure housing the Hampton Carousel, one of only 70 antique wooden merry-go-rounds still in operation in the U.S, and Hampton Air and Space Center. We then learned that this Virginia town had been the original location for NASA’s headquarters.

Jim explained how Hampton might have become the first British settlement in the New World, had it not been for her saltwater river, the first three ships sent from England to colonize the area continued in search of fresh water and landed at what became Jamestown . During a particularly harsh winter, Jamestown was evacuated for several days. Thus making Hampton the oldest continuous English speaking settlement.

Hampton University campus then came into view. The large white manor-house and enormous magnolias of this former plantation stood as a reminder of the university’s beginnings. The property had been purchased by General Samuel Chapman Armstrong following the Civil War. He transformed it into a school for former enslaved and Native American men. The university has the distinction of being home to the oldest African American museum in the U.S with an impressive collection of fine and contemporary art and artifacts.

Passing Blackbeard’s Point, we could picture the pirate’s severed head, which following his capture, had been impaled on a pole. This was intended to serve as a warning to others to take their pirating business elsewhere. How well this worked is up for debate. Hampton hosts an annual Blackbeard Festival, and plastic sword-wealding pirates of all ages overrun the town.

Before entering Naval Station Norfolk, amid sightings of white egrets and dolphins, Jim recounted the Battle of the Ironclads. This inconclusive Civil War confrontation between the Monitor & Merrimack changed naval warfare forever.

Naval Station Norfolk

Hampton Roads Harbor is the location of the largest navy base in the world. The land portion measures approximately 680 acres and is headquarters for the Atlantic Fleet and a NATO base.

You never know what you will see as the Miss Hampton II cruises by, but during our cruise we gaped at two mammoth 1,096 foot long nuclear aircraft carriers with a capacity of 5,000 personnel.

Along with the big guys were replenishment ships, destroyers, cruisers with anti-aircraft, anti-submarine and other defensive and offensive capabilities, ships used to lay fiberoptic cables, attack submarines and an oil tanker converted into a hospital ship. These floating behemoths dwarfed a seven-story building onshore.

Naval Station Norfolk is the home port of the repaired USS Cole. The Cole was damaged in 2000 when it was rammed by a small boat laden with explosives. Thoughts of the 17 sailors killed that day reminded us of the perils faced by our service men and women.

One of the many highlights of a cruise on Miss Hampton II is a 45-minute stop and tour of Fort Wool. The fort is located on a large manmade island with an enormous flag to welcome visitors.

Following the War of 1812, it became obvious that Fort Monroe alone could not protect the coast from enemy ships entering the harbor. The solution? Pick a strategically sound location and install an island.

Dredging of the harbor and building of the island began in 1819. It was partially constructed under the direction of Lt. Robert E. Lee during his early U.S. Army career. Ironically, Forts Monroe and Wool played an active role during the Civil War, protecting the entrance to Hampton Roads harbor, and were occupied by Union forces throughout the four-year conflict.

The island was built to a height of approximately 10 feet above water level using rocks. Unfortunately, it began to sink, and had to be fortified by the addition of more rocks around the perimeter. The island still sinks an eighth of an inch a year.

Decaying Buildings at Fort Wool (©simon@myeclecticimages.com)

Decaying Buildings at Fort Wool (©[email protected])

What’s left of the fort is still standing, and we were able to climb to the top to enjoy the view. The island was quiet except for the sounds of boisterous birds and the occasional jet flying overhead.

Two hundred stone cutters had worked on constructing Fort Wool out of solid granite. Jim showed me a hole in the top of a stone where the builders would have fitted a spike. The spike would have aligned with a similar hole in the bottom of another stone. In other words, no mortar was used. It was like an early form of Lego.

The Parade Ground at Fort Wool (©simon@myeclecticimages.com)

The Parade Ground at Fort Wool (©[email protected])

Fort Wool closed in 1957, and the island is now a city park. Sadly, the buildings remaining on the island have fallen victim to fire, neglect and vandalism. Unless they undergo major reconstruction and renovation in the near future, their decay will pass the point of no return.

Fort Monroe

On our return run, we passed Fort Monroe, the oldest continuous fort in the U.S. until its closure in 2011. It is now open to the public, and seeing this historic site from the water convinced us we needed to pay it a visit.

The fort’s long history includes a precedent that was established in May of 1861. Three escaped slaves were granted refuge as “contraband of war”, and thousands more followed. Fort Monroe became known as “Freedom’s Fortress.”.

Jim pointed out the former officers’ club, which is now a restaurant, an RV camp with a beach area and the Casemate Museum.

Also located at the fort is the Old Point Comfort Lighthouse, built in 1802 and a pet cemetery for people the who once lived at Fort Monroe.

Old Point Comfort Lighthouse on Fort Monroe as Seen from the Miss Hampton II (©simon@myeclecticimages.com)

Much has changed since Fort Monroe’s closure. You can find houses for rent and an independent living facility for seniors that had once been a hotel.

As we left Fort Monroe behind, we saw an Osprey (the plane not the bird) take off. The military presence is strong and constant, and is an integral part of the life of Hampton, Virginia.

Final Thoughts

The Miss Hampton II returned to port all too soon, and we disembarked. The experience had been like floating alongside a lavish buffet table. The variety and abundance of Hampton’s offerings were compelling enough to entice us to visit some of her sites from a landward perspective. Should you ever find yourself in Hampton – and I hope you do – take a cruise aboard the Miss Hampton II. Then take your time getting to know this lovely Southern lady.

The boat was clean and comfortable and the commentary was interesting. Several years ago I purchased the Hampton Sea to Stars combination ticket. We were saving, the cruise, the best for last. The first Miss Hampton operator retired, so there was a three-year delay from when I purchased to when we could do the cruise. We appreciated the new owners who were gracious and honored our Sea to Stars Combination ticket. The staff was friendly and helpful. It was a very hot day. The staff recommended that we would probably be the most comfortable at the bow of the boat where there was a cool spray and a nice breeze.

Had a good time with family onboard, definitely worth checking out.

Harbor cruises Ms. Hampton II is located in Hampton Virginia the closest navy base tour to Williamsburg. Once aboard a very clean ship you will be able to see famous attractions, breathtaking views, and professional narrators will guide your tour. It is an informative and entertaining harbor cruise. The tour guides bring to light the legend, lore and history behind the worlds largest natural harbor. You'll enter the magnificent Chesapeake Bay. Warships at the Norfolk Naval base highlight the Harbor tour with an in-depth narrative of each and every ship. The tour guide knew every ship that was docked in The harbor that day at the Naval base and gave a complete history of that ship. The ships were amazing to say the least. When you are that's close to them it is truly incredible to see the size of each ship. We were also given a lesson in the type of ship that it was and what it was used for by the Navy. It was a beautiful day and quite sunny on the water. I highly recommend this cruise on a beautiful sunny day.

Great cruise! The ship is clean and steady. Our captain turned around so everyone could see the dolphins passing. Jim, the guide is very knowledgeable and had great stories about everything along our route. We rode past the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Jim knew every ship in port. We didn't eat, but the drinks and food were reasonably priced. This tour is a great value.

Not very family friendly unless your older than 6! The wife and I recently took this trip as it is the only boat tour in the area that stops at Fort Wool. We arrived here early enough to get what we thought would be great seats on the boat but since we had a one-year-old that was being back-carried, we were told we could only go to the bottom of the boat.Huh? What happens of the bottom of the boat is at capacity? I can only assume that the Miss Hampton doesn't have enough money to afford to upgrade the upper portion of their boat to allow people of all ages. So we proceeded to the back of the boat and unfortunately were met there by a family reunion on the bottom deck hooting and hollering. The speakers on board the boat are not good at all but, I can't attest to what they sound like on the top of the boat because my family wasn't allowed up there!... If your hard of hearing, this trip might not be for you as you wont be able to hear much over the loud conversations and engine noise on the bottom of the boat. What little bit of historical information we could hear was very interesting learning about Blackbeards Point and the Hampton Roads area itself in terms of shipping. The Captain seemed pretty knowledgeable about different ships that were also docked at Naval Station Norfolk. And then we were off to Fort Wool the highlight of the tour! But it wasn't every thing I expected it to be. After hearing that it was just a park owned by the city of Hampton I could only imagine what lie in wait like the other unkept parks of Hampton. After stepping off the boat I was shocked to see how much of a disaster the civil war fort was in although it looks like workers have tried but gave up short of mowing the grass. The captain gave us pretty good brief summary of the fort and that was that. Nothing I would care to see again unless it was better taken care of. **Overall, The trip felt very unwelcoming, after I was told I couldn't go to the upper deck because I had an infant 1 yr old, making this boat seem not very kid friendly. I wasn't able to eat any food while on board the boat as there is a $10 minimum to use a card. So I'd advise you to save your money and grab food after the boat or bring your cash.

The tour of Hampton Roads harbor including floating by The Chamberlin Hotel , Fort Wool , Naval Base Norfolk and then back to Hampton dock. You DO NOT DEPART THE BOAT onto Fort Wool as advertised. The speil can be a bit chatty at times. Good way to spend a few hours on the water.

Photo of Helen S.

Just got done taking this tour and had a GREAT time. They mentioned a lot of their business comes from word-of-mouth so I'm making sure to put it out there...put this on your to-do list. Quiet, relaxed and we even had Dolphins that came along side the boat and made their presence known. Tour speaker was very knowledgeable and other employees were so friendly. There is a walking tour of Fort Wool that was unique. Just being on board with the nice breeze was a relaxing way to spend an afternoon. Right next to the Virginia Air and Space Museum.

Photo of Lorrie B.

Best boat tour I've EVER been on .... the narrator was funny and informative.... the tour was very interesting.... just wish we could have actually gone on Fort Wool!

Photo of Janet T.

Just ended cruise and had a great time. The stop over on Fort Wool was very informative. I highly recommend this and the price is so affordable.. Food and drinks available on board too! Please take time to enjoy this cruise!

Photo of Chris J.

Interesting harbor tour with plenty of history, facts, and sights pointed out along the way. The island stop at the old fort was a nice touch. I have nothing to compare it to, but it was a solid 3 hour use of time if you're visiting the area. By the way, my kids (7 and 9) spent half of their time on the upper deck, so maybe it's situational.

Luxurious American cruise line provides a comfortable way to learn about U.S. history | Sandy Fenton

American Cruise Lines

You might not be familiar with the name, but American Cruise Lines has been taking guests to the country's most popular rivers and coastal waters for over 50 years. American Cruise LInes

  • Sandy Fenton | Special to PennLive

You don’t need to travel overseas to enjoy a river cruise vacation.

You might not be familiar with the name, but American Cruise Lines has been taking guests to America’s most popular rivers and coastal waters for over 50 years.

My husband and I recently returned home from a weeklong “Historic South & Golden Isles” sailing aboard the new, upscale and modern “American Eagle,” a 100-passenger coastal catamaran ship that departs from Amelia Island (Fernandina), Fla., and ends in Charleston, S.C.

Our itinerary also included port-of-calls in Brunswick, Ga., Savannah, Ga. (overnight), and Hilton Head and Beaufort, S.C., (overnight) as we cruised the Intracoastal Waterway taking in all the amazing Lowcountry scenery along the way.

Having loved our many European river cruises, I didn’t know what to expect cruising throughout the United States. Well, we’re sold. “American Eagle” exceeded our expectations.

American Cruise Lines is positioning itself as the number one choice for domestic and foreign adult travelers wanting a premium experience while learning more about American history and culture from a river, harbor and coastal water perspective.

American Cruise Lines is the only 100% all-American-owned and operated cruise company in the U.S. All ships are built in Salisbury, Md., and crewed by Americans. The company sails both rivers and coastal itineraries around the country, only visiting U.S. ports. Their guests (Eagle Society Members) keep coming back over and over again (75-80% were past passengers on our itinerary).

American Cruise Lines is all about small ships and all-inclusive cruising (90-180 passengers). They have 17 ships, with American “Liberty” and American “Legend” debuting this year, plus two more coming in 2025. In addition, ACL just purchased four paddle-boat ships from the recently defunct American Queen Voyages.

Popular itineraries and ports of call in 35 states spotlight the Columbia and Snake rivers, the entire East Coast from Maine to Florida, Alaska, the Mississippi River and its tributaries, New England islands and harbors, the Pacific Northwest and the Chesapeake Bay - with onboard resident historians and experts hosting port discussions and briefings on all sailings.

On our “American Eagle” sailing most guests were 60+, retired, well-traveled, active and eager to discover new ports and explore the historic river towns along the way. These “Eagle Society” members have already “done that, been there” when it comes to travel, especially cruising. Many have circumnavigated the world by land, river and sea.

Nowadays, they still have the time, money and energy/good health to travel, but prefer to stay in the United States, closer to home, and do not need (or want) over-the-top, opulent surroundings with personal butlers and sommeliers, nor do they want mega-size vessels holding 6,000+ guests. “Eagle Society” cruisers want good food & drinks, good service, and comfortable and modern accommodations combined with a relaxed, uncomplicated, friendly onboard experience.

The most popular event is the late afternoon open bar “Signature Cocktail Hour” with officers and fellow guests enjoying their favorite beverages and hors d’oeuvres featuring local specialties, and chatting about their day’s adventures (with live background music) before heading into the open seating dinner from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Fresh food is brought aboard daily, and all meals & snacks are included in your cruise. Master chefs prepare traditional American menus with a regional flair featuring local ingredients. The menus are short and sweet without any confusion when ordering. Breakfast in the dining room offers the most menu choices including a feature of the day.

In Brunswick, Georgia, the feature was beef tenderloin with eggs, lobster scampi & breakfast potatoes (I know, I know), plus made-to-order omelets, French toast, oatmeal, specialty quiches and the usual sides – bacon, sausage, grits. (A casual breakfast/lunch is offered every day in the outdoor café).

Our lunch choices included fried green tomato BLT, Napoleon lemon dill crab salad, or Brunswick stew. Dinner has two appetizers (corn chowder soup or iceberg wedge salad) and 3 entrees: Southern BBQ pork chop, crab-crusted salmon or pan-seared sea bass. Wine and beer and soft drinks are complimentary during lunch and dinner, and homemade desserts are a big deal with this crowd.

Following dinner, many guests head back to the main lounge for live entertainment, featuring local musical guests, comedians, magicians and storytellers – and yes, the open bar is available to all.

To be clear, American Cruise Lines is not for everyone. It is not for families with young children. It is not for honeymooners wanting a tropical island beach vacation during the day and a heart-pounding late-night disco dance party. There is no onboard pool, casino, shopping, fancy spa, Broadway shows, 24/7 room service, activities or entertainment. It is the total opposite of Disney or Vegas or Carnival Cruises.

It is also not an inexpensive cruise line. ACL is a small, intimate experience for adults wanting to see and explore the United States in an upscale and comfortable environment – without long lines and crowds. (Some New England and Columbia & Snake River summer itineraries are popular with multi-generational groups – without young children.)

Here are a few of my favorite ACL “American Eagle” experiences during our “Historic South & Golden Isles” sailing :

  • Easy and seamless walking on and off the ship at every port of call. In Savannah we were docked in front of the River Walk, smack in the heart of this historic and beautiful city.
  • The new, modern and luxurious onboard décor. Very light and airy throughout the ship. Spacious public areas and staterooms/suites, including a surprisingly large sun deck with comfy lounge chairs and a track for scenic walking.

Un tourism | bringing the world closer.

Unwto 2021: a year in review, 2021: tourism united, resilient and determined.

2021 has been a year of learning and adapting for tourism. It has proven that only by working together can the sector overcome challenges and embrace opportunities.

Gathering the global tourism community and developing concrete actions, UNWTO has led tourism’s response with the vision of not only restarting, but doing so in a more inclusive, innovative and sustainable way.

Jan

January - March

As global tourism faced up to a second year of unprecedented crisis , UNWTO began 2021 by counting the cost so far . At the same time, however, the emergence of vaccines brought hope . The Global Tourism Crisis Committee met to explore what this meant for safe travel and the restart of tourism, while the announcement of the winners of the UNWTO Global Start-up Competition recognized the role culture and creativity will play in tourism’s restart and recovery .

Feb

April - June

Collaboration and innovation were the focusat the start of the second quarter. UNWTO partnered with IATA on a new Destination Tracker to give both tourists and destinations clear, impartial and trusted advice. And a new Start-up Competition was launched to find the best ideas for accelerating rural development through tourism. In May, the launch of the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO generated significant interest from Members in every global region.

Mar 2021

July - September

As destinations in Europe welcomed tourists back for the peak summer season, UNWTO highlighted the role of  digital solutions for the safe restart of the sector. But UNWTO also looked ahead, to a more sustainable future , working with key partners to  reduce plastic waste and consumption across every part of the sector. Together, we celebrated World Tourism Day around the theme of Tourism for Inclusive Growth, a message of solidarity and determination that was echoed on a global scale.

April 2021

October - December

The final quarter of 2021 began with cautious optimism as UNWTO’s Barometer showed signs of improvement in tourist arrival numbers during the summer season in the northern hemisphere. A new partnership with Netflix will bring the message of tourism as a driver of opportunity to a massive global audience, while in November, UNWTO was tourism’s voice at COP26 and signatories to the landmark Glasgow Declaration keep growing. Finally, against the backdrop of the UNWTO General Assembly , the programme of work for the coming biennium was approved and 77% of Members voted to secure a second mandate for the Secretary-General from 2022-2025.

Growing and Moving Forward

UNWTO brings together political leaders from across the globe to deliver a strong, coordinated response. Governments, destinations, fellow UN agencies and international organizations met at key international events joining efforts to rethink tourism. Institutional coordination has proven crucial to find the solutions that build a smarter, greener and safer tourism.

Leaving Nobody Behind

The pledge to ‘ leave nobody behind ’ means nobody should miss out : Not now as we support the sector in the face of crisis, and not in the future as tourism starts again. Tourism is a proven driver of equality and opportunity. And that’s why we turn words into actions, delivering guidelines and action plans , to ensure everyone can enjoy the opportunities tourism brings.

A Shared Vision

Advancing the transformation of the tourism sector , partnerships are the only way forward. In 2021, UNWTO signed agreements with international organizations and the private sector to step our vision for the future of tourism: innovation , education , sustainability , green investment , rural development.

World Tourism Barometer: September 2022

UNWTO updates World Tourism Barometer and reports international tourism back to 60% of pre-pandemic levels from January to July 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

Below are excerpts from the September 2022 release of the UNWTO Tourism Barometer :

  • The steady recovery reflects strong pent-up demand for international travel, especially in the months of June and July which are part of the Northern Hemisphere summer season. The easing or lifting of travel restrictions in an increasing number of countries also contributed to boost results.
  • International tourist arrivals almost tripled (+172%) in January-July 2022 compared to the same period of 2021. Numbers climbed from -64% in January 2022 (versus 2019) to -28% in July, the strongest month since the start of the pandemic.
  • Asia and the Pacific (+165%) saw arrivals more than double in the first seven months of 2022, though they remained 86% below 2019 levels.
  • The ongoing recovery can also be seen in outbound tourism spending from major source markets. Expenditure from France was at -12% in January-July 2022 compared to 2019 while spending from Germany stood at -14%. International tourism spending remained at -10% in Belgium, -23% in Italy and -26% in the United States.
  • The uncertain economic environment seems to have reversed prospects for a return to pre-pandemic levels in the near term. 61% of UNWTO Panel of Experts now see a potential return of international arrivals to 2019 levels in 2024 or later while those indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 has diminished (27%) compared to the May survey (48%).

TOURISM TRENDS 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

11 Aug TOURISM TRENDS 2022

The situation for tourism remains rather unusual as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The crisis has marked a significant change for everyone, and above all for tourism, one of sectors hit hardest by the virus. 2020 was the year in which international tourism came to a near-complete standstill, and the only alternatives were domestic and local tourism.

2021 has seen some improvements, but only in a very subtle way as restrictions are still in place and many countries keep their borders fully or partially closed.

It is difficult to make an estimate for 2022 as it is not known how the pandemic will evolve. However, it is possible to talk about the new tourism trends that are likely to emerge over the coming year: – International travel with restrictions still maintained by both destinations and airlines in order to offer 100% security to the consumer.

– Reinforcement of COVID-19 testing; two years after the pandemic, COVID testing will still be in place as a preventive measure. – Conscious travel will be advocated. Travel to more distant destinations, but with prolonged durations of stay, as consumers look to enjoy as much of each place they visit as possible. – Green travel. Climate change is a problem that is present and growing. Consumers now are much more responsible and aware of the reality they live in on daily basis.

– A new trend is the “ed-ventures”. It is about combining education and holidays for the youngest members of the family. While adults may need to telework or attend meetings, their children can be doing workshops and learning in a playful way.
