In the heart of the Makena Coastline is the iconic “Maui Turtle Town” ! As you can gather from the name this area, on Maui’s southern shore, is very populated with Green Hawaiian Sea Turtles. However, Turtle Town is not one reef, its a several mile long stretch of ocean that encompasses more than a dozen reefs and snorkel spots. Most of the LARGE snorkel boats go to the same two reefs in Turtle Town, and we’ll definitely keep you away from them!

On a kayak snorkel tour in Turtle Town your guide has flexibility to take you as far or close as you want to paddle to see Green Hawaiian Sea Turtles.

During our winter months, December through April, the calm waters off of Wailea make this a great option for whale watching . Enjoy beautiful views of Haleakala, Puu Olai, Molokini Crater, Lanai, Mauna Ka Halawai (West Maui Mountains) and Hawaii (the Big Island) on a clear day. Not to mention a new perspective of South Maui’s famed resort area of Wailea and Makena.

Kayak Olowalu | West Maui

Olowalukayak

Kayaking at Olowalu beneath the back drop of Mauna Ka Halawai, or West Maui Mountains as they are commonly referred is a great choice year round. Enjoy views of Haleakala, Molokini Crater, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai and Hawaii (Big Island) on a clear day!! Enjoy secluded whale watching, away from the large whale watch tour boats and BIG group kayak companies swarming Makena and Wailea, during our winter months of December through April.

The rest of the year Olowalu Reef, or “Mile marker 14” as its sometimes known by visitors who are told to look for the marker to pull off the highway and snorkel, offers incredible snorkeling and is home to some of Hawaii’s healthiest reef system. A turtle cleaning station is frequently visited by Green Hawaiian Sea Turtles looking to have their shells cleaned by the tropical fish and cleaner shrimp in the area. Large schools and a variety of colorful reef fish make this one of Maui’s visitors favorite place to snorkel .

Everyone knows that when it comes to the best whale watching in the world Maui is the top of the list. However (fortunately for you) only a select few know the best way to get you there is on a self-powered kayak ! No engine or crowd noise, no diesel fumes…. just you, the swoosh of your paddle through the water and the Humpback Whales! There just isn’t a comparable experience to seeing a humpback whale up close and personal on an ocean kayak. Sometimes you can even hear their singing echoing through the hull of your kayak. Our knowledgeable staff can guide you in the right direction, based on current weather and whale sightings, for the best location of your kayak whale watch adventure. Our passionate ocean guides are marine naturalist certified and have a ton (pun intended) of information to share with you about Humpback whale migration, population, behaviors and more.

Booking a private kayak tour over a group tour allows you to call the shots and not worry about other guests agendas. Whale Watching Kayak Tours are offered December through March, but check with our team to see if there is a chance to catch a whale on your tour!

“WOW!”

Took the 3 hour group Makena landing tour. We also did the road to Hana, Feast of Lele Luau and Pearl Harbor tour, All fantastic. But all these activities did not compare to the Makena Landing tour. This is a must do. Your guide will be lead you on a great adventure/ education of marine and Hawaiian life style.

Wes

I went with my wife and 3 teenage daughters. Jay was such a patient, and informative guide. He was thorough with his instructions as well as what to look for in the ocean. He was a patient instructor on the water as well with the members of our group that had no experience…

Google Review

My wife and I had an absolutely fantastic time with Curtis at Maui Kayak Adventures. We always felt safe and never rushed. Curtis took his time with us, explaining about some history, landmarks, and, of course, the sea life. He made sure we saw the turtles, some great reefs, and colorful fish. He is also a photographer and took some awesome pictures of our trip…

Trip Advisor Review

We went out on a morning when the full moon from the night before was still up; the water was beautiful! Not only did our guide teach our group some things about the islands, language, whales, we also got to be active!

Lots of fun coupled with breathtaking scenery from above and below. Our guide Mike was outstanding and shared his knowledge of both the ocean and the creatures that call the water home. We will definitely book again when we return to Maui next year.

Awesome time kayaking and snorkeling with Jay as our guide. Terrific talk before we left explaining their philosophy and respect for the environment, and sharing info on the fish and turtles we’d be likely to see. That made it all the more exciting when we did see them…

My wife and I were celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary on the islands of Kauai and Maui. It has always been her dream to come during humpback whale season to see these majestic mammals. I booked a private sea kayaking tour through Maui Kayak Adventures, and I am so glad that I did. They were outstanding…

The first time I snorkeled at Molokini Crater, I was eight years old and I was blown away by both the fish (beautiful!) and the slide off the boat (the stuff an eight year old’s dreams are made of).

Since then I’ve gone on nearly a dozen trips and tours to find the best Molokini snorkeling tour experiences. And I’ve found some great ones.

Molokini crater is a partially submerged volcanic crater that is home to a marine life sanctuary as well as a bird sanctuary. The crater is thought to have been formed from a volcanic eruption 230,000 years ago. The island crater is a popular spot for snorkeling and diving as the crater has crystal clear water and great visibility as well as a large and varied fish population.

Want to jump right into the recommendations without reading the whole thing? We’ve got you covered with some of the best Molokini snorkeling tours: – Our absolute favorite tour departing from Wailea – Jump aboard a power raft from Kihei – This Molokini Catamaran tour from Ma’alaea Harbor in Central Maui is wonderful. Save 10% with our Promo Code! – A larger boat from Ma’alaea but a really family-friendly experience Plus we have more listed below!

Molokini Snorkeling Tour FAQs

Are snorkeling tours worth it.

We love snorkeling tours and think they are definitely worth it for a few reasons:

  • Get instructions and head out with an experienced guide: this is helpful and important whether you are new to snorkeling or you’ve done it a few times. A great guide can help make the experience even better and they can help you learn precautions that will keep you safe in the ocean.
  • Keep the reef safe: when snorkeling from the shore, it is easy to inadvertently damage coral and rock if you’re not careful. The coral is delicate and has been growing for thousands of years. It’s important to keep it safe!
  • Have a great time on the water: getting a view of Maui from the water is such a different perspective. Relaxing on a boat and getting to enjoy a few hours on the water with a knowledgeable guide talking story gives you memories you can take home.

Note: the only way to visit Molokini Crater is with a snorkeling tour. You cannot get there from the shore. Molokini Crater is a highlight of a trip to Maui (check out the other 32 things on our list of best things to do on Maui ).

What is the best time of day to snorkel Molokini Crater?

Normally, you’ll find that it’s best to snorkel Molokini Crater in the morning. Most tours leave in the morning in hopes of finding the calmest waters. In the afternoon, the tradewinds can kick up and the ocean conditions get rougher.

If you’re headed to Maui, make sure you review our ultimate Maui Guide . It has nearly everything you need to know to help you plan your trip. And it’s all free.

How long is the boat ride from Kihei to Molokini?

The great thing about leaving on a snorkeling trip from Kihei or Wailea is the ride to Molokini is really quick. From Wailea, the ride is around 15 minutes and from Kihei the ride is around 20 minutes!

Compared to a 45-minute ride from Ma’alaea Harbor, leaving from Kihei or Wailea is fast and efficient.

There’s a good chance you’ll need a car when you’re on Maui. We love to get ours with Discount Hawaii Car Rental . National carriers and no prepayment — it’s a winner!

Where do Molokini snorkeling tours depart from?

Molokini snorkeling tours depart from three different locations on Maui: Ma’alaea Harbor, Kihei Small Boat Ramp, and Maluaka Beach in Wailea.

Ma’alaea Harbor is in central Maui and is the furthest away from Molokini Crater but the most number of boats leave from there.

Kihei Small Boat Ramp and Maluaka Beach in Wailea are closer to Molokini Crater and are much more convenient for anyone staying in South Maui, but fewer boats leave from there.

We give you options for snorkeling tours departing from each location.

Is Turtle Town the same as Molokini Crater?

Many Molokini Crater snorkeling tours add a second stop on their trip at Turtle Town. But Turtle Town is not the same as Molokini Crater. Turtle Town is a snorkeling spot famous for turtle sightings that is located off the coast near Makena Landing . This stop is a nice compliment to Molokini Crater as you won’t see any sea turtles in the crater — but you will see fish, eels, and if you’re lucky, an octopus.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Kihei

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Kihei

Two great options leave from the Kihei Small Boat Harbor. And both are small boats — get ready for an adventure on a power raft.

Redline Rafting

Redline Rafting’s two-hour tour feels like an express ride in the best possible way. Jump on the raft and you’ll be out to the crater in 20 quick minutes. Once there you’ll have plenty of time to snorkel in the crater with your small group (the raft only holds 11 passengers!).

Their five-hour tour includes a little more excitement. Not only do you snorkel in Molokini Crater but you are also able to head to the back wall of the crater (weather permitting), which is an adventure. And you’ll spend some time at Turtle Town as well before having lunch and heading back to Kihei.

Check out our video of our snorkeling trip with Redline Rafting:

Makena Coast Charters

Also aboard a raft, Makena Coast Charters offers two tours.

During their two-hour tour , it’s similar to the Redline Rafting two-hour tour. This is an express route for people who are excited to get in the water at Molokini Crater. After a 20 minute ride to the crater, you’ll get an hour or more to explore the water.

Their four-hour tour loops in a stop at Turtle Town. You’ll first get roughly an hour to snorkel at Molokini Crater followed by another hour of snorkeling at Turtle Town. After snorkeling you’ll enjoy a meal and beverage service before they return you back to the small boat harbor.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Wailea

I don’t like to play favorites because all of the tours on this list are excellent, but we love the sunrise snorkel with Kai Kanani. While it is a very early departure, you get to spend some time in the crater before anyone else gets there. After snorkeling in the crater, you head to Turtle Town.

Kai Kanani leaves right from Maluaka Beach (which is stunning), but you should expect to get a little wet during the beach loading. Once you’re on board, you’re off on a luxurious adventure. The crew is fantastic and you’re treated to breakfast, hot drinks, and a beautiful catamaran.

If you’re not an early riser, they also have a mid-morning snorkel which is also fantastic. The same tour just a few hours later.

In case it’s not clear, we just love this tour and so do our kids. Check out our experience with them (and our stay at the Grand Wailea).

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Ma’alaea

A trip to Ma’alaea is a further drive from South Maui and it takes longer to get to Molokini Crater on the boat, but it’s a great option for people who like a larger boat (no rafts!), or need an easier accessible boat (no beach loading).

Sail Maui – 10% OFF!

We’ve done several Sail Maui tours and we’ve had an excellent time every time. Their Molokini Snorkeling tour is no exception. Leave for the 4.5 hour tour from Ma’alaea Harbor aboard their Paragon II boat. While the boat ride to Molokini is longer from Ma’alaea, they make use of it by offering you a delightful breakfast. After snorkeling at Molokini Crater, enjoy lunch on your ride back to Ma’alaea.

This is a great option for passengers of all ages as the boat is comfortable and getting onboard from the harbor is easy.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tour

Fair Winds II

Family fun is the focus on the Four Winds Molokini Crater tour . It’s the largest boat on this list, but they have some specific amenities that can make going with a larger group totally worth it. Note: their boat capacity is 149 people but they advertise that they keep their tours smaller than that to ensure comfortability.

On their Molokini snorkeling tour, you’ll get to snorkel Molokini Crater but kids are front and center on the tour. There is a waterslide (that even adults enjoy), a glass-bottom viewing room, cookies, temporary tattoos, and more. In the glass bottom room, a few kids or adults can take a peek at what’s underwater, without actually having to get into the water.

Best Snorkeling Tours in Kihei and South Maui ( that aren’t to Molokini Crater )

While we love snorkeling to Molokini Crater, sticking closer to shore is also a great option. We have two suggestions for snorkeling tours that don’t include a boat, but still have great snorkeling.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tour

Maui SUP and Snorkel Adventures

Get in some morning exercise along with a snorkeling tour on an SUP adventure and snorkeling tour . This two-hour tour is private and includes both your SUP rental as well as your snorkeling gear. Head out from Makena Landing (near Turtle Town) and paddle the scenic coastline. As it’s a private tour, it can be geared to your personal activity level so you can go as fast (or as slow) as you want on the SUP. If you haven’t tried SUP yet, your guide will give you a lesson and help you navigate the new skill as you head out onto the water.

Maui Snorkel Tours

This is a unique guided snorkeling tour. They offer shore-based tours , meaning no boats are involved at all. You’ll head out in a very small group with a guide (or a private tour) after a briefing on land about marine biology and how to snorkel.

Why is a shore-based excursion so great? On a tour boat, there’s no one available to give you 1:1 guidance for how to properly snorkel. With a guide, they are taking you step by step through how to snorkel, where to snorkel, and equipping you with the knowledge that you can use on future shore snorkeling trips.

Once you’ve mastered your snorkeling skills, you may feel comfortable enjoying some of the other best snorkeling spots on Maui .

SNORKEL TOUR / LESSON TIMES

Early morning, late morning, closest town, maui region, the crater is only accessible by sea vessel, molokini crater marine & land species.

Molokini Crater is known for its exceptional visibility, often exceeding 180 feet and 200+ feet on the lesser visited back wall. Crystal clear waters and protection from wind and waves inside the crater make for excellent snorkeling and scuba diving , not to mention the vast underwater life you’re likely to see. Popular  marine species at Molokini  include Bluefin Trevally (‘Omilu), Tang, Moorish Idol (Kihikihi), Black Triggerfish (Humuhumu’ele’ele ) , Parrotfish (Uhu), Butterflyfish, Reef Triggerfish (Humuhumunukunukuapua’a), Peacock Grouper (Roi),

Molokini Island bird santuary off the shore of Maui, Hawaii

Trumpetfish (Nunu), White Spotted Pufferfish (‘O’opu-hue), Moray Eels (Puhi Paka) and Octopus (He’e Mauli). Larger visitors such as Manta Rays (Hahalua), Spotted Eagle Rays (Hihimanu), Reef Sharks and Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins (Nai’a) are also sometimes seen on the inside and back wall of the crater.  Fishing, feeding or harming  of any of the marine life in the area is forbidden.

During Maui’s  whale season , which lasts from December 15 to April 15, you may also see humpback whales on your ride to and from Molokini Crater. Keep an eye out for the mist rising from their blowholes!

On the crater itself, two primary species of nesting birds exist as part of the Hawaii State Seabird Sanctuary, including the Wedge-Tailed Shearwater and Bulwers Petrels. Under the Sanctuary classification, people are no longer allowed on the crater itself unless invited as part of a specific research study.

How to Get to Molokini Crater

Molokini is reached by 99% of visitors by boat. Unless you’re an experienced paddler or have done similar crossover training, we recommend taking one of the many excellent boat tours offered from South Kihei Boat Ramp, Maalaea Harbor or Lahaina Harbor. Tours typically include  snorkeling, scuba diving , or SNUBA at Molokini Crater and breakfast or lunch.

For those looking to try something new and get their heart pumping, we recommend joining us for our  Molokini Paddle Challenge  in an outrigger canoe or kayak. While it’s definitely not the easiest way to reach the crater, we guarantee it’s an experience you’ll never forget.

Fun Facts About Molokini Crater

“The Elevator” is a spot along Molokini Crater’s back wall that offers guests the opportunity to ride approaching waves directly up and down without ever hitting the crater itself.

The back wall has also been named one of the Top 10 Diving Destinations in the World.

Approximately 400,000 people will visit Molokini Island in one year.

Approximately 50 species of plants grow on the crater itself, at least half of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

In order to prevent tour boats from damaging the area’s fragile reef system any further, day-use moorings were established in 1988.

When snorkeling or scuba diving at Molokini, you’ll notice that the marine species are much less afraid of humans than at most other  snorkeling spots . A large number of visitors over the last couple of decades have made the fish much less sensitive to human proximity.

In ancient Hawaiian legend,  Molokini Crater  is said to be the tail of a beautiful lizard, whose body was cut in half during a jealous rage by Pele, Goddess of Fire and Volcanoes.

These Molokini Crater tours will take you to an uninhabited islet off the south shore of Maui. It serves as a natural habitat for native marine and sea bird species, making it a popular snorkeling destination.

"Turtle Town' is the nickname of an area on Maui's south shore where turtles often gather to rest and have their shells cleaned by feeder fish. A protected coral reef, this area is another excellent snorkeling spot and one of the best places to swim with sea turtles on Maui.

Will we see whales on this tour?

During the winter and early spring (usually mid December through early April), you'll have a pretty good chance of seeing whales, as Maui is a prime hot spot for whale activity. But don't worry. Your Maui snorkeling experience is still safe, as the whales will be unlikely to approach during snorkeling and pose very little danger to humans.

Molokini Crater

Molokini Crater is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. As one of only a few partially-submerged volcanic cones of its kind in the world, it offers sights and experiences that you probably didn’t even know you were missing.

We’ve been diving Molokini for 30 years and never grow tired of its clear blue water and incredible sea life. Come see why many consider Molokini the best snorkeling Maui has to offer.

Olowalu is one of the most amazing spots to explore marine life among all the Hawaiian Islands. Enjoy crystal-clear blue waters, a decorated coastline, impressive coral reef formations, and an abundance of Hawaiian ocean marine life.

Venture through calm waters with your family and friends, enjoying all the beauty of the Pacific. Be an eye witness to a myriad of tropical fish, colorful seabeds, the Hawaiian green sea turtle, and more. Olowalu is an adventure worth seeking; a perfect ocean activity from beginner to novice.

Turtle Town

Turtle Town is considered one of the best Maui diving locations, offering a rare glimpse into the world of the Hawaiian green sea turtle. These gentle creatures have been honored and loved by Hawaiians for centuries and you’ll be given the chance to share their home with them as you snorkel Turtle Town.

This is an opportunity that few people will ever have and will likely be one of your most memorable experiences in Maui. Snorkel with and closely observe the Hawaiian green sea turtles in their natural habitat.

Coral Gardens

Coral Gardens is on the West Side of Maui and best reached by boat, explore one of the most unique and protected bays in Hawaii. Home to a host of tropical fish, Octopus, Eels, and the Hawaiian green sea turtles, Coral Gardens does not disappoint.

The natural reef formations are incredibly beautiful, vibrant in color, and bustling with ocean marine life. The clear and shallow waters reflect gorgeous Hawaiian sunlight, making for amazing visibility, and ideal conditions for snorkeling in Maui.

A first class boat traveling to exceptional destinations is a great start. We build on that by offering impeccable service.

Coral Reef Initiative

No other vessel on Maui offers as much. 360-degree panoramic viewing, warm showers, and a super water slide are a few of the amenities.

Pride of Maui is the largest and most stable catamaran on Maui. Her sprawling deck boasts unobstructed panoramic views.

The last two years presented many challenges and learning opportunities. Everyone was forced to slow down, revisit priorities and take stock of what’s important.

We made significant operational changes with a limited guest capacity of 50%. We were afforded the opportunity to improve our onboard amenities and refine the guest experience. We’ve listened to our guests and our repeat Ohana, who welcome the limited capacity and appreciate the upgraded service.

We recognize that capacity limits allow for more attentive and personalized service, with the added benefit of greater room to roam our spacious vessel comfortably at a relaxed pace.

On behalf of our crew and employees, we thank our repeat Ohana for your support and look forward to serving you soon.

Molokini Crater

Molokini snorkel adventures.

If you’re looking for some of the best Maui snorkeling  and the perfect place to spot marine life as well as other wildlife- look no further than the world-famous island of Molokini.

Molokini is a small crescent-shaped island located just a few miles off the southern coast of Maui. It is one of only three volcanic calderas (depressions left in the ground after an eruption) on earth and was formed about 150,000 years ago. Not only is it a geologic marvel, but an ecologic one, as well.

As a Hawaii State Marine Life and Bird Conservation District, Molokini is home to an astounding array of life. In addition to seabirds, you’ll find over 200 species of colorful tropical fish- some of which can only be found here- as well as the famous Hawaiian green sea turtles. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a plankton-eating whale shark! And the coral reef here thrives thanks to abundant sunlight and optimal ocean currents.

Naturally, one of the world’s best snorkel spots necessitates an excellent snorkeling tour, and Redline Rafting is exactly that.

Redline's boats, the Redline I and Redline II have the ability to reach destinations others only wish. Snorkel the 200ft deep back wall of Molokini and spend your time looking at marine life instead of searching for it. Attach that with their 5-star customer service, and you have a recipe for an amazing day on the water.

Redline Rafting  sets the standard for Molokini snorkeling and   is our pick for the best Molokini Boat Tour.

Kayak Molokini

Are you up for a hardcore challenge? Looking for the most eco-friendly Molokini Snorkeling Tour out there? Then we suggest grabbing a paddle and your sense of adventure and hitting the water with two of our favorite Maui water adventure companies: Hawaiian Paddle Sports and Maui Kayak Adventures .

And while the majority of people who visit Molokini do so via boat, a small number of them are strong enough and adventurous enough to do so via ‘paddle power’ rather than horsepower. We caution you that this is only for experienced paddlers in excellent condition, and advise you that it’ll also be the adventure of a lifetime!

Both companies offer a superior Molokini Kayak Adventure and visitors consistently give them high marks for their extensive knowledge of Maui and its marine environment, and their commitment to the safety of their guests as well as the marine life that so graciously shares their home with us.

While the focus of this adventure is the paddle itself, you will be able to snorkel and explore before heading back- a long way back!

The Reviews Are In!

This is our third trip with Maui Snorkel Charters. Doug, Trish, and Mandy are so knowledgeable and friendly. They go out in the water with you and point out different fish and the turtles. The food is great and the snorkeling is superb. They will, take you on 4-5 different spots and weather permitting the backside of Molokini which has amazing views.

Mandy, Kiki and Captain Doug promised us that this morning would be THE BEST DAY EVER and boy, do they deliver their promises! It's my first time in Hawaii and I picked up their flyer off the wall outside of a local restaurant. Little did I know back then that they had the best offer amongst all their competitors even the ones recommended by our hotel.

Amazing service. If you are taking a snorkel tour by boat, Maui Snorkel Charters is the best available. New boat. Friendly crew. Great masks.

We went out the morning of January 25 (early part of whale season) and we're able to snorkel with the added bonus of whale watching. We saw about ten humpback whales and calves fluke slapping, fin waving, breaching, diving, etc.

Highly recommended!

Doug, Trish and Crew is absolutely No Ka Oi! We chartered them for a birthday group and it was by far the best experience ever. We visited the back side of Molokini and around to watch Humpback Whales. Do yourself a favor and try them out for the best personal experience. We became familiar with Maui Snorkel Charters when they donated their boat, crew and time to help clean the reef. Great time with great people!

Doug, Trish and crew are fantastic.  We've been out with them several times and they treat us like family.  No other tour I've ever been on caters to the customer like they do.   They always seem to find the fish, whales, dolphins, turtles and excitement.  Thanks so much for making our day the best ever!

We had an amazing time snorkeling with Maui Snorkel Charters! Everyone was very nice, the boat wasn't crowded, and we got to see multiple turtles. We snorkeled 5 separate times along the trip. I highly recommend snorkeling with this group!

If you're looking to go on a snorkeling adventure and want to see the most places in one trip, than look no further. I work on boats and this company is where its at. We stopped 5 times at different locations, where most boats stop once or twice at most. The captain and crew are so friendly and are very knowledgeable about the marine life and areas we stopped. I had been wanting g to do the backwall of Molokini for years and that finally happened with Maui Snorkel Charters. Thanks for the great experience.

Maui Snorkel Charters trip out of Kihei boat ramp is hands down the best snorkel trip we've ever been on in over 25 years of coming to Maui.  The crew are top notch and they certainly gave us our money's worth.  They limit the number of passengers to 18 which means you are not overcrowded when get into the water.

Wonderful family owned and operated business. Because they cater to smaller groups, participants get more snorkel time in the water than some of the large group charters. Our group was able to snorkel in five different areas with guides who were patient in teaching us what to do (it was our first time). They gave us interesting info about our snorkel sites and pointed out cool fish, starfish, turtles and an octopus during our outing.

Molokini Crater: a Wonder of Nature

In the Hawaiian language, Molokini means “many ties.” It is a crescent-shaped volcanic crater lying between Maui and Kahoolawe. It is a tiny uninhabited islet with an area of 23 acres.

Molokini rises from 300 feet below the ocean’s surface and is a half-mile wide. Its diameter is 0.6 km. The highest point is 161 feet above sea level.

Exploring Molokini Crater in Maui, a guide featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids.

Partially submerged in water and protected by the crescent shape, Molokini is a wonder of nature. It is one of the three such calderas in this world, which is why it’s a popular tourist spot. If you love exotic places and want to explore tropical fish, Molokini island is your perfect vacation destination.

The history of Molokini Hawaii is very interesting. It was formed by a volcanic eruption in the Cenozoic era. According to Hawaiian myths, Molokini was an attractive young woman who was cut into two pieces and transformed into a rock by Pele, the fire goddess.

According to historians and archaeologists, Hawaiians used to visit Molokini in the early days for fishing. They also hunted seabirds and collected their eggs.

From the 1950s to the 1970s, the Molokini Maui crater was famous for the commercial harvesting of black coral.

During World War II, the crater hit the news for a different cause. It was used by the American troops for target practice.

Today, Molokini Reef is one of the best locations for snorkeling . It features in the bucket list of tourists who love  scuba diving  and snorkeling. It is a bird sanctuary and Marine Life Conservation District.

The reef and the island were damaged due to the bombing, but today you can only see a few signs of military activities when you do a Maui crater snorkel.

Why You Should Visit Molokini Crater

Hawaii is one of the most loved tourist spots in the world. For years it has ruled global tourism with its beaches, turquoise blue water, food, and tropical climate.

Maui also is known for its volcanoes and national parks.

However, it is the Molokini volcano that is stealing the limelight nowadays. People who visit Hawaii or its islands participate in snorkeling, scuba diving, and other activities. We all have seen pictures of the amazing underwater world and its treasure, but Molokini offers an exclusive experience.

Exploring Molokini Crater in Maui, a guide featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: Snorkelers at Molokini Crater near Maui

As you can see from the images, Molokini is half-submerged in water, and this makes it so unique. The islet shelters secrets of nature that you will love to unearth.

With fish, colorful coral, and the mysterious underwater, Molokini Crater snorkeling will help you to discover an amazing sea world. It’s absolutely stunning!

The protected waters of this island are a treasure trove of underwater creatures.  The partially submerged crater and its crystal-clear water look heavenly. Deep down, an inspiring sea world is waiting for you. You can see over 250 varieties of marine animals here.

The crater acts as a shield for the aquatic animals, which find it a haven to flourish. Away from rough waves and strong currents, the calm waters of Molokini allow marine animals of different shapes and sizes to breed.

The visibility is very high here – you can see more than 150 feet, which makes Molokini perfect for watching marine life. Moorish idols, parrotfish, black triggerfish, yellow tang, and moray eels are common here. Occasionally, you can see manta rays too.

Have you ever seen whale sharks? Come to Molokini, and you can see them feeding on plankton. They are vegetarians, you see, and so don’t pose any threat to you.

Do you know why snorkelers love Molokini? The fishes are less skittish. They are quite familiar with humans, so you can watch them closely. This is really a paradise for snorkelers and the perfect snorkel stop for your trip to Maui!

Molokini Scuba Diving

Molokini Crater diving is super popular as well.

Experienced scuba divers flock to Molokini to enjoy a lot of action under the water. You can take a scuba diving boat from Ma’alaea Harbor.

As you dive into the sea, you will be greeted by the sights of different schools of fish. Pyramid Butterflyfish and Scissortail Sergeant fish are very common. Check the coral reef while scuba diving; you will be amazed to see Hawaiian Damselfish passing by.

Look carefully for Racoon Butterflyfish. Lucky divers even find Flame Angelfish while going Molokini Crater scuba diving.

There are several spots at Molokini for scuba diving. Your guide will take you to these places which are known for sighting certain fishes. For example, White Rock is a dive site near Maui, which is deeper but with more varied aquatic animals, probably not the best for beginner divers.

Along with coral pinnacles, you can watch species like Green Scorpionfish, White-banded Cleaner Shrimp, and black and yellow Scorpionfish. Keep your eyes open, as this site is famous for incredible species that are not usually found everywhere.

The height of the Molokini scuba diving trip is finding Day octopus and Zebra Moray Eel. They are shy and try to hide in the coral, but experienced divers can locate them.

Molokini scuba diving will help you to create unforgettable memories. You can take back all the photos and see them later on to relive the adventure you had at this incredible place.

Why Divers Love Molokini

Pro divers find Molokini irresistible. While beginners or amateurs prefer to remain within the crater while diving or snorkeling, experienced tourists go beyond in search of exclusive marine creatures.

The reefs drop off gently, and with the help of the currents, you can traverse further out to get a taste of the sea around. Divers can witness the vibrant coral reefs and the diverse marine life by swimming out of the sheltered arms of the crater.

Turtle Town Maui

When you are looking for your Molokini snorkeling tour, you might pick one that also includes a stop at Turtle Town.

You can find the best places to snorkel in Maui and see Hawaiian sea turtles in Turtle Town. It’s a long stretch of coastline extending from Nahuna Point to Black Sand Beach in the district of Makena.

Exploring Molokini Crater in Maui, a guide featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: Turtles under water on a blue background.

The entire coastline is known as Turtle Town, but for tourists, only Maluaka Beach is popular as it is one of the  best places to snorkel in Maui . Just picture a white sand beach, calm and clear water, and rich marine life. All these add up to make a snorkeler’s paradise.

The place got its name from the Hawaiian green sea turtles, which are found abundantly here.

Maluaka is a beautiful beach. It is less frequented. The Haleakala Mountain shields the beach from the trade winds, making it safe and also conducive to plenty of water activities. The undisturbed sea is ideal for boating, fishing, swimming, and snorkeling.

Exploring Molokini Crater in Maui, a guide featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: Tranquil turquoise-colored water on the quiet Maluaka Beach, Maui, Hawaii

The reef gently slopes down, making it easy to find the right spot for yourself. The southern tip of the beach is the best place to locate Hawaiian green sea turtles.

The coral reefs also start at this point, and as you slowly go into the water, you will find turtles. They swim in the shallow water, and you can enjoy the rare experience of swimming with them.

One more thing, the green sea turtles are not green but brown. When they lie still, you may mistake them for rocks, so keep a careful watch for them.

Snorkelers can see parrotfish, butterflyfish, squirrelfish, cardinalfish, tang, and trumpet fish here.

If you don’t want to get into the water, it’s okay. Relax on the soft sand and get a nice tan. The kids can play volleyball on the beach. Enjoy a perfect family vacation away from the hustle and bustle of city life in this town.

Luckily, there are plenty of great Molokini and Turtle Town snorkeling tours to enjoy both locations!

Maui Snorkeling Molokini Crater FAQs

Molokini is just 3 miles southwest of Maui. You can only reach it by boat or raft from Maalaea Harbor and Lahaina . Take a smaller boat or a catamaran to experience Molokini Crater and witness nature at its best here.

Molokini Crater snorkeling is a unique experience that every adventure lover will remember. If you are traveling during winter, you will get a bonus – the sight of  humpback whales . Every moment at Molokini is filled with the thrill and the joy of finding something new. Imagine getting inside a sunken volcano and watching the colorful reefs and fishes. Some of the fish found here are endemic to Hawaii, making Molokini a treasured place for nature lovers.

To discover Molokini, you need to go on a boat tour. Some take you on catamarans, while others are rafts. Going on a Molokini snorkel cruise is so much fun, as all the snorkeling equipment is provided for you.

While a boat to Molokini Crater snorkeling tour is most common, you can go on a kayak tour to Molokini Islet. You can only go on a guided tour, you cannot kayak by yourself to the crater.

Yes, Molokini is safe. Molokini Island preserves not only the marine life but also the waters from outside currents and waves. That’s why you will find the water calm and safe for all types of water activities. The place is affordable and ideal for both children and adults. All the tours have guides, so you will be safe and have someone to show you around.

The depth of the water varies. Depth near the inner shore is around 1 foot, and it increases to 50 feet. So, you can find a comfortable spot according to your skill and safely explore the seabed. Most beginners stick to the shallow water, and the experienced or pro swimmers go deep down to explore the sea on their own.

Most of the Molokini boat tours start early in the morning, as the water is calm, and most tourists prefer this time. So, be ready for an early morning adventure. It takes around 45 minutes to reach Molokini from the Kihei Boat Ramp. From Maalaea Harbor, it is about an hour.

Yes, there are sharks at Molokini Crater. Whitetip reef sharks are the more common Molokini Crater sharks here. They are thin and small, and the juvenile sharks find the reef safe, while the adults are usually seen near the bottom. A few gray reef sharks are also found in Molokini Crater; however, whale sharks frequent this crater quite often. It is rare to see a shark while you snorkel at Molokini Crater, and even more rare for a Molokini Crater shark attack.

There is no Molokini beach. You won’t find any sand here, so you don’t want to climb Molokini Crater or spend time on it, but rather just enjoy the species of fish during your snorkeling trips here.

Molokini Snorkeling Wrap Up

All these surprises and many more await you at Molokini Crater. With a vast array of activities and natural attractions, the Molokini crater vacation will be the best one you had in years.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
