Mr Tourism Nigeria: How Unexpected Experiences Led Me To Greatness

mr tourism nigeria

How did you get introduced to modeling? Back in school, I had a friend who entered a design contest and was frantically searching for models to showcase his designs. That was when fate intervened and I found myself being asked to help out. I hopped on it without knowing a thing about strutting down the runway.

At the time, I had never really considered modeling as a serious pursuit. But something about that experience lit a spark within me and I soon found myself receiving compliments on my walk and stage presence. It was like I had stumbled upon a hidden talent that had been waiting to be unleashed.

Fast forward to today, and I am proud to call myself a model and to think that it all started with a simple request from a friend! Looking back, I realize that sometimes, the most unexpected experiences can lead us down the path to greatness. After seeing other good- looking young men, did you lose confidence that you wouldn’t win? Of course, there were moments when I felt a little scared. After all, this was a competition that I had never experienced before. So, I did not know what to expect. But I refused to let that fear hold me back.

In- stead, I dug deep and put in the work, determined to give it my all and show what I was made of. Looking back on that experience, I realize that confidence is one of my greatest strengths. It’s what allowed me to take risks, to push past my limits, and to emerge stronger and more resilient than ever before.

How challenging was the competition? Which parts were most tedious? Honestly, it’s difficult to put into words just how challenging the competition was. There were so many different areas that put me to the test, from the physical demands of the various challenges to the mental and emotional toll of being away from home and constantly pushing myself out of my comfort zone.

If I had to pinpoint one specific challenge that really stood out to me, I would say it was the dance rehearsals. Now, don’t get me wrong. I love to dance and have always considered myself to be pretty good at it. But when I was asked to learn choreography for the competition, I quickly realized that I had a lot to learn.

Now that you have won, what’s next? I have always been passionate about the entertainment industry, and I see this as the perfect opportunity to pursue that passion. I feel like it’s the perfect time to take the leap and see where it takes me. Of course, I know that the entertainment industry can be tough and competitive, but I am ready to put in the work and make the most of every opportunity that comes my way. Whether it’s modeling, acting, or TV host- ing, I am open to all possibilities and excited to see where this journey takes me.

Any Pet project in mind? Giving back to my community is something that has always been important to me. I am passionate about empowering the young generation by helping them learn new skills that can set them up for a successful future. I believe that education is incredibly important but I also know that many young people face obstacles when it comes to gaining practical experience or developing marketable skills. That’s why I want to start a pet project that focuses on helping the youth in my local community of Enugu State,

Nigeria to learn a skill while they are pursuing their education. There is a high rate of drug abuse among young people, especially young boys. What is your advice? As a young person myself, I believe that we all have a responsibility to ourselves and the future, to make the most of the opportunities we have been given. Unfortunately, too many young people fall into the trap of substance abuse, which can have serious consequences for their health, their relationships, and their prospects. That’s why I want to encourage all young boys to focus on building a brighter future for themselves, rather than getting caught up in destructive behaviours.

We all have talents and passions that we can pursue, and there are so many opportunities out there, if we are willing to work hard and stay focused. Of course, I know that it’s not always easy, and there are many challenges and obstacles that we will face along the way. But I truly believe that every action we take has a consequence, and it’s up to us to make sure that we are making choices that will lead us toward a positive and fulfilling future.

What would you say is young people’s problem of doing drugs? The biggest factor is peer pressure. When young people see their friends or peers engaging in drug use, they may feel pressure to join in order to fit in or be accepted. Another reason why young people may turn to substance abuse is to cope with depression or other mental health issues.

They may feel that drugs offer a temporary escape from their problems or help them to numb the pain. However, it’s important to remember that drugs are not a solution to these underlying issues. In fact, they often end up making things worse in the long run. Instead, I believe that having a strong support system, including friends, family, and mental health professionals, is crucial for helping young people navigate these challenges and find healthier ways to cope.

Have you ever been cajoled into using drugs by peer pressure and how did you overcome it? No, I have not. Throughout my upbringing, I have been very mindful of the company I keep and the influence they can have on my decisions. I believe in the power of positive peer pressure and have surrounded myself with like-minded individuals, who prioritize their health and well-being. Therefore, I have never been cajoled into using drugs by peer pressure. Instead, I have always sought out positive and supportive relationships that align with my values and goals.

What careers are you looking to go into? I have a passion for the entertainment industry and I see myself pursuing a career as an on-screen personality. Be it acting or as a TV host alongside being a fashion model. I also have a degree in Electrical Engineering, and it’s a field that I find fascinating. While these two interests may seem unrelated, I firmly believe that one can dominate in both worlds with the right mindset and dedication.

In my experience, pursuing multiple interests can enhance one’s abilities in both fields. For instance, my technical background has helped me develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills, which I believe will serve me well in the entertainment industry. Similarly, my interest in media has helped me develop communication skills that are valuable in any professional setting.

What were your childhood dreams? As a child, I really wanted to be a footballer but I never really pursued that as a career even though I spent most of my lunch break playing oranges as footballs. Was winning Mr Tourism part of the dreams? Not at first but after my first opportunity to walk the runway and the compliments I got, I started looking into this direction, and I a m very happy I took the turn. I have no regrets but gratitude for the journey so far and hope for the best to come.

I’ll Turn Around Nation’s Tourism Fortunes – Mr. Tourism Nigeria

Mr. Tourism Nigeria, Chike Christopher Nwachukwu, is fully determined to carve a niche for himself in the nation’s bubbling tourism and hospitality industry, as the youthful-looking emerging star gets set for a fruitful busy year. The amiable and soft-talking young man, spoke to Daily Sun in Lagos recently, on his determination to promote Nigeria’s vast tourist destinations. Excerpts.

Mr. Tourism Nigeria

What prompted your interest to participate in Mr. Tourism Nigeria competition? My participation in Mr. Tourism Nigeria competition 2013, especially my confidence and determination to win the competition can easily be traced to a good friend who strongly advised me to go for it. He told me that I have the features of a good model, impressive height, good looks, among other qualities needed in the competition. After much persuasion, and being fully convinced on the possibility of winning, I registered online, went for audition in Benin City, and scaled through. I later went for the finals, representing Delta State, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

What was your experience like while participating in the competition? The competition was both tough and interesting, as we were kept inside a camp for a week. At the camp, there were rules and regulations for to abide. We also had a retinue of daily activities, such as rehearsals, workouts, dances, runway walks, and few others. We also embarked on courtesy visits to sponsors of the project, Oron museum and other places of interest. We were 32 contestants in the camp, and I was made the camp captain, responsible for the activities and needs of others. For the short duration we spent in the camp, we developed relationships with other contestants. They were cordial and friendly, and there was no misunderstanding or rancour amongst us.

How did you feel when you were adjudged the winner of the contest? Truly, I was full of joy and happiness. I felt on top of the world the moment I was pronounced the winner of the Mr. Tourism Nigeria 2013, because it was a very good platform to reach out to different parts of the country, and even beyond, on the importance of tourism as a source of revenue earner for the nation. I am fully convinced that the platform can be used to create more awareness both nationally and internationally, on the immense opportunities in the nation’s tourism sector, including attracting investments to the sector. Also it is a platform to empower our youths to be more dedicated and devoted in nation-building, because there is no place like home.

What are your areas of focus during your duration as Mr. Tourism Nigeria? I will focus on opening up the hidden and unknown richly endowed tourist sites that dot the different parts of the country, as well as promote existing tourist sites. You know, Nigeria is well endowed with lots of what I call, “natures technologies,” which include waterfalls, lakes, Ogbunike caves, and other interesting tourist sites, in different parts of the country. Also across Nigeria, there are numerous interesting cultural festivals and events, like Argungu Fishing Festival, Durbar horseracing festival, Ogun festival, and many others. Certainly, I will work on showcasing some of these tourist sites to the entire world to see, and visit annually. In order to achieve desired results in this aspect, I am hopefully looking forward to having a good working collaboration and partnership with the Federal Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation and other relevant federal government agencies, as well as state governments and their relevant agencies. I will be seeking the partnership of corporate organizations and individuals, especially those whose activities are in line with the promotion of tourism in Nigeria.

What are your dreams and visions as the reigning Mr. Tourism Nigeria? Using the Mr. Tourism Nigeria platform, I am determined to make a change, and build a standard which other young people can look up to, and follow with the aim of rebuilding and transforming the nation, for we do not have any other country of own except Nigeria. Therefore, we must strive hard to make this nation a good, standard and comfortable nation that we all desire.

What message do you have for your teeming fans? I want them to simply understand that wherever you come from does not determine who you are, but you can make that positive change that will make Nigeria better, for the change starts from you. Believe in yourself, work hard, and the sky will be a stepping-stone.

Africa: The History of tourism in Nigeria and the 25 people that transformed the environment

tourism

Tourism, according to United Nations World Tourism Organisation “comprises of the activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes.”

In Nigeria, tourism is centered around activities happening in the country such as festivals. Also, attractions such as parks, cultural sites and Natural sites also contribute to tourism in the country. The tourism industry in Nigeria as come a long way and has evolved overtime due to footprints of individuals in the tourism space who have ensured that the sector play an important role in the growth of the economy.

This perhaps has made successive government in the past to pay attention to the sector .

Presidents Ibrahim Babangida and Olusegun Obasanjo have been credited for making efforts to grow tourism in Nigeria during their various administrations. Under the administration of Gen.

Ibrahim Babangida, the NTDC came into being effectively in 1992. The corporation was established by Decree No. 86 of 1991. The Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation started out as Nigerian Tourist Association in 1962 before it was changed to NTDC in 1992.

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo created The Federal Ministry of Tourism and Culture in June, 1999 to promote the nation’s rich tourism potentials and cultural heritage through identification, development and marketing of the diverse cultural and tourism opportunities.

And by mid 2006, the ministry was renamed Federal Ministry of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation. In 2005, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, set up a Presidential Committee to come up with a Nigeria Tourism Development Master Plan. This was with the active support of key Tourism bodies including the UNWTO and one Tourism Development International Ltd, a Nigerian firm.

Before Presidents Babangida and Obasanjo administrations, there have been people making all the difference in the tourism development in Nigeria since 1960. Introducing santiago roberts, the ceo of miss tourism nigeria, mr universe nigeria & men’s fashion week nigeria.

' src=

You have successfully organised Miss Tourism and Mr Universe Nigeria for more than five years now, tell us how it all began…

Prior to when Miss Tourism Nigeria and Mr Universe Nigeria kicked off in 2012, Qhue Concepts was already long handling pageant production and management as well as consulting for top pageant brands here in Nigeria, Botswana and South Africa.

We decided to launch the Miss Tourism Nigeria and Mr Universe Nigeria brands cos we believed that pageantry as a tourism tool could also become a strong platform not just to scout for beautiful faces for the commercial value of partners and sponsors but also as a platform to enrich and empower young people to become a very powerful voice. A voice that could not be ignored as a force when it concerns national issues; issues that could lead to a better change and ultimately nation building.

The pageant industry here in Nigeria no doubt is booming, but sadly most of the new emerging pageants are copies of what already exists. The Miss Tourism Nigeria Pageant, however, has been completely redesigned to provide a whole new concept to the pageant industry and its devoted fans.

We focused on what we felt the country needs and wants; a positive role model for girls/boys and men/women around the country. Instead of finding yet another pretty face or sex symbol, we wanted to find a young man or woman who is passionate about making a difference. Other pageants claim to be looking for the same – but actions speak louder than words – which is why as an addition to all the creatives we’ ve introduced over the last 7 years, this year we are also introducing new rounds such as The Final Speech, which sees each representative that makes it into the “Top 5” present a speech to the judges and viewing audience about their chosen cause and charity they wish to be a spokesperson for during their reign.

Overall, we want to find a young man or woman that will be active in making a difference, not just a pretty woman or a sex symbol who can strike a pose in front of cameras with a crown and title.

In Nigeria, sustaining a business is of the biggest challenge, how have you been able to maintain the pageants till date?

Funding has been a major challenge for any start-up in Nigeria and for the pageant business, it’s even twice the hurdle because there is nothing like grants or seed money or even investors willing to invest like other business enjoy.

As a result, I have had to invest personal funds over the last 7 years till date. I have sold my car, sold a land just to ensure each year, we are able to pull the show off in a grand style. Our Mantra is dedication and determination. If you are determined and dedicated to achieving something then you surely will achieve. But at the same time, you have to work hard as success does not come easy, if it came it is hard to handle. Moreover, I believe in putting my efforts in the right direction at the right time. With a combination of these entire things, one can achieve anything. Surely it feels great seeing our country receiving recognition at an international pageant stage because when you are competing for any international contest it becomes a matter of the entire nation, not just a single person. So while we might not be getting the funding we hope for, I believe someone somewhere is watching and sooner than later, guess I won’t have to sell off properties to make the show happen.

Organising beauty contest takes a lot, especially managing human being with diverse culture, believes and personalities…how do you keep everyone happy without hurting their feelings?

Passion for change. Our slogan is “An Ambassador for the nation”, and that’s exactly what we’re looking for. Representatives from each state should be ambassadors for their state so that they can make a significant difference in their states, even if they don’t win the Miss Tourism Nigeria crown. Also, the Miss Tourism Nigeria platform is far more than just a crown and a sash. It’s Our aim for The Miss Tourism Nigeria Pageant to be as entertaining and vibrant as Miss Universe, with an important focus like Miss Earth and be as respectable and honest as Miss World.

In 2016, one of you queens, Collete Nwadike won an international competition which threw you more into the spotlight, tell us about her win and the success and fame it brought to your pageant?

It was indeed a moment of joy and pride for the brand to have one of our queens become the first black girl to win the Miss Exquisite Face of the Universe. Without a doubt, that win shaped the brand and propelled us to become a force; lots of pageant hopefuls begun to tilt towards the brand and also give the brand massive press/PR but I must say it hasn’t been only Collete but we have had other amazing queens all done excellently well at major international pageants around the world.

And as a brand that’s committed towards tourism promotion and also continually working hard to put Nigeria on the global map through the use of pageantry as a tourism tool, it goes beyond just Miss Tourism Nigeria queens; I must say we are always supportive of every Nigerian delegate (from any pageant brand) who goes to an international pageant, perform good and make Nigeria proud. The pageant industry though still growing should become a family where we all celebrate the wins and achievement of each other as a single entity.

Did that win make many girls sign up for the competition that year?

Oh well surely. We had lots of entries that season. But then again we also understand that it’s not just an international win that sustains a brand. Lots of hard work and the eye for details as well as ensuring brand integrity and credibility is also key. We are yearly working and continue working to have another international win for the brand.

you have won a few awards with what you do, can you tell us about them?

The Miss Tourism Nigeria pageant is the winner/recipient of the “Most Outstanding Pageant of The Year” For the Lagos Fashion Awards 2014/2015; the brand also won ‘Pageant of The Year for the Garden City Fashion Awards 2015, also, ’Pageant of the Year’ and ‘Fashion Event of The Year’ for the West Africa Fashion Awards 2016 as well as current winner ’Pageant of the Year’ for the Nigerian Achievers Awards for 2017, ’Pageant of the Year’ for the Golden Pageant Awards and Africa Model Awards for 2018,

Growing up, have you always known that this is the career you were born to do?

I am certain that just like every normal young kid, growing up presents us with difficulty in deciding what exactly we intend to become. Even though I discovered earlier than I would say most growing up kids would my direction in life; which is to inspire people to live lives becoming an inspiration to others, i also knew that it will require a lot of training and mentoring; But I can say as a product of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism and early media working background, it gave me the opportunity to be quickly grounded and allow me to be able to bring the planning, organization and creative problem-solving skills from an early education, experience and qualification to each event which I have been opportune to be a part of.. With credits to television programmes, the conceptual foundation built during those years is represented in many aspects of project messaging and creativity. Maybe or maybe not, but am certain that my years at that citadel really paved way for most of the things am doing today. What other careers fascinated you as a young man?

As a growing young man, I was most fascinated by the media. I always wanted to be on TV and be able to speak to people. And I can say I am one of those few privileged enough to have lived it; at a very young age, I got the opportunity to work at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). In fact, I believe so strongly that my background in the media, under the tutelage of some of the industry’s finest like Helen Odeleye, Comfort Okoronkwo and Amina Abdulrahman grounded me and even prepared me for my real life career: Events and Production.

During this period, I went from production assistant to a presenter, then to producer and director. I positioned myself to learn as much as I possibly could. Every department truly fascinated me so I took it upon myself to go through them all. After 5 years, I realized that being on TV wasn’t actually what I really wanted cos I noticed I enjoyed being behind the scene. directing people and pulling together all the elements needed to have a great show and I even got happier with feedbacks from my superiors and the viewers when the shows I produced/directed reached expectations or changed lives.

Am still in the media, cos all our shows are designed as television shows; even the Miss Tourism Nigeria, as well as the Mr Universe Nigeria contest but I find greater joy as the man behind the scene bringing it all together. Bringing all the sparks to create that magic that eventually leads to that life-changing moment for thousands of young girls and boys who pass through our pageant system.many would say that it is lack of job opportunities that lead many into organising beauty contest, how ever done any 9 to 5 job and was it searching for a better means of livelihood that led you into organising beauty pageant?

I really don’t think its ever the lack of a job that would lead anyone to go into pageant production. Cos this is an industry that requires lots of understanding as well as so much to be able to function and deliver a good production that transcends beyond just show or entertainment to understanding that its a platform that’s meant to discover, support and empower.

I produced my very first pageantry in 2006. I was still in NTA then. And then I moved to Owerri where I was working as a creative director and event manager for one of the major events and tourism brands there. I produced 3 national pageants for that brand also. Also, at a very young age, I realized I wasn’t the regular 9 to 5 kinda guy. So all the places I ever worked at, my working there wasn’t really 9 to 5. I had the freedom to work at certain times and still be able to go use my time for other things. Am a creative thinker and developing creative processes and platforms is my strength. this one may seem funny but there may be truth in it, there is also this speculation that it is usually men who don’t know how to talk to girls that go into a beauty contest, is that so for you?

HAHAHAHAHHA! Oh my God! really? It’s more like asking an introvert to become a bank marketer. Or a really mighty shy person to become the governor of a state. Beauty pageantry requires you to know how to communicate. It requires you to be a good salesperson. It requires you to constantly be in the face of projects and talk brands and organizations to seeing the bigger picture and most importantly, being able to lead young girls to forge clear vision that is not just about their own personal self-gains but visions and ultimately projects that will make their societies and communities become better; so if you don’t know how to talk, then wahala go dey Oooo! LOL!how do you deal with seeing beautiful girls every season, does it take a lot of discipline not to cross the line?

Again, every job requires the utmost discipline. Pageantry like any other industry requires great discipline. And I believe one of the things that’s set our brands (Miss Tourism Nigeria) from other pageant organizations and help us stay scandal free or any form of sexual harassment is cos the team as well as myself understands that what we do is service. Not just service to mankind but service to a higher power that is gracious enough to position us to become instruments that can be used to discover, support and empower thousand and millions of young people; and to be able to do this work efficiently and effectively requires not just discipline but an even stronger self confidence in understanding that access to young and unassuming girls doesn’t translate to the abuse of that position. What specials are we expecting from Miss Tourism this year?

This year, the show is themed, #theWonderWoman. We will be celebrating about 30 black women; women of power and courage who fought bravely to give the women of today a voice. Women who went into battle when the men were scared or undecided to even consider. Women who stood in and enforced peace when chaos and anarchy seemed like the only thing that was an option. Women who provided counsel to their husbands and kings leading to the establishment of world order and peace.

I am particularly excited cos the team has been working on this since October last year just to ensure that the narrative is properly carried out. I can’t let much out but believe me, this year’s show will be like never seen. From photo shoots to promotional images and videos to even the entire concepts, its gonna blow you away. This year’s Miss Tourism Nigeria pageant is one that you can’t afford to miss.

Am also strongly trusting that this year, we can do more with the right sponsorships; so am calling on all brands, no matter how small or big to please come through and let us create this #wonderwoman magic together.Since you are passionate about tourism, in what ways can the government improve tourism in Nigeria?

First, let’s ask ourselves, What is attracting Nigerians to Dubai, including even our government functionaries? It is because the country has positioned itself as an exciting destination where you can have fun and feel safe at the time. We can do better because Nigeria has some of the best beaches, flora and fauna as well as the most beautiful tourist destinations in Africa and the world.

But for us to do better, the government needs to critically look into the major drawback which is the dearth of infrastructures.

Simply put – no infrastructure, no tourism. This is the bane of tourism in Nigeria. There are no supporting tourism infrastructures in the country. While the ones available are begging to be revamped. So, first things first, is for the government to look into tourism infrastructure development and improvement. What contributions would you say miss tourism has done for Nigerian tourism?

The Philippines has had a major economic growth via pageant tourism as a tool. And it’s truly sad Nigeria is yet to come to the full understanding of the huge impact as well as the influence of the beauty pageant industry. Pageant queens are a strong weapon that can be used to awaken a sleeping giant ( tourism ); something that the likes of Philippines, Thailand and Venezuela have come to fully understand and are capitalizing on to grow their GDP.

A beauty pageant vis-a-vis queen is a subtle representative of feminine icons in any country. It’s not surprising therefore that beauty pageants showcase a country’s fashion (culture and heritage) which are the major elements of any tourism tool.

The Miss Tourism Nigeria pageant via its yearly ambassadors despite the non-funding from both government and sponsors have continued to promote Nigeria’s tourism potential not just here at home but even on the international scene, drawing global attention to Nigeria as our queens showcase our rich culture and heritage as national representatives at global pageants around the world..

They couldn’t push me further – Ruger reveals why he left Jonzing World

mr tourism nigeria

Nigerian Dancehall star Ruger is known for his outspoken nature and the hitmaker is finally breaking the silence on why he left his former label.

In a post on X, Ruger shared that he left Jonzing World because the label got too comfortable with the money they were making off him and couldn’t push him any longer.

Ruger stated that while he appreciated the label for introducing him to the world, he couldn’t renegotiate a new five-year extension because he couldn’t imagine 5 more years without action.

“As much as I’m very appreciative of the fact that Jonzing World introduced me to the world, I just couldn’t continue with them because they got too comfortable with the money they were making from me and couldn’t push me further as I wanted to be pushed. Was supposed to renegotiate the contract but I couldn’t imagine 5 years more without action”

Actor Jamiu Azeez opens up on battling suicidal thoughts

mr tourism nigeria

Jamiu Azeez, the Yoruba actor, has opened up on his battle with depression and suicidal thoughts.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, the actor disclosed he has been “depressed” for two years but kept mum due to “the fear of being mocked”.

He said nothing has been working for him and he felt lost and unsure of who to confide in.

Azeez, who could not keep mum anymore, said he reached out to actress Toyin Abraham, and she gave him a listening ear.

“Mummy Ire, @toyin_abraham, I know this might catch you off guard, but I simply had to do this. You overlooked the fact that we don’t really talk but you shown me so much love and gives me an assurance that everything is going to be fine,” he wrote.

“The past two years have been a whirlwind for me like I’ve been losing everything, even my Mind. Thoughts of “Suicide” have been ringing in my head.

“The fear of being mocked kept me silent. Nothing seemed to work, and I felt lost, unsure of who to confide in.

“But the truth is, I grew tired of putting on a brave face and pretending to be okay.

“So, yesterday, I mustered the courage to reach out to @toyin_abraham, and her response left me speechless. I feel compelled to express my deepest gratitude openly.

“I’ve prayed for her countless times, but now I ask for your prayers too, please help me pray for @toyin_abraham and her family.”

Onung Emerges New FTAN President, Takes Charge

By Justina Uzo

The new President of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), Mr. Nkereuwem Onung has restated his commitment to raise the stake in the tourism industry in the country, saying that part of the new era was to move domestic tourism to a new level.

FTAN, which is the umbrella association of the organised private sector tourism i.e. association for hotels, tour operators, boat operators, travel agents and other tourism businesses, held its elections during 2021 FTAN AGM in Abuja last week.

Onung, who is Chairman, Remlords Tours and Car Hire Services, had a landslide victory with 71 votes over his challenger, Otunba Ayodele Olumoko, who got 22 votes, at the elections held at Rockview Hotel (Royale) Abuja. Onung, who will be at the helm of affairs of FTAN in the next two years, had unveiled a 7-point growth agenda for the private sector tourism.

He was the acting president of FTAN before the election, having taken over the mantle of leadership after the sudden death of FTAN President, Alhaji Rabo Saleh earlier this year. He is coming with a wealth of experience as he is the former president of Nigerian Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) and a member of its Board of Trustees.

Moreover, he is a core private sector person, being a banker before coming into tour and car hire business.

FTAN, meanwhile, also elected other officers at the successful AGM. These officials are: First and Second Vice President FTAN, North Central and South-South geo-political zones of Nigeria, Alhaji Aliyu Madaki and Mrs. Susan Akporiaye, respectively. Others include Ime Udo (tour operator), and Wale Olapade as PRO.

Onung, on behalf of the executive council, thanked the various tourism associations of the federation for giving him and his team the mandate to serve in the next two years in various capacities.

He maintained that the future of FTAN is greater than its history, as it was established 12 years ago. “I also appreciate our members who are also elected with me. We will give our best,” he said. Many are looking to see the implement of his campaign promises.

Onung said among other things that he is seeking for prosperity for the industry and for the players that have given their lives to it, “because there wasn’t enough data to measure the contribution of tourism to the country’s GDP.”

He promised that when elected, he would work on improving data capturing so that the statistics would reflect the relevance of tourism in Nigeria.

He said: “I believe that we can robustly work towards that so that at the end everybody will understand what tourism contributes to our GDP, so that at the end, we begin to see how we can change the narratives and begin to work on our governments to begin to see us in that light that we are in the industry.”

He lamented that some officials have turned FTAN administrative structures, like that of the vice presidents, to individuals who go around doing things that are not constitutional by creating state excos of secretary and chairman/which are illegal structures that ought not to be.

He promised to strengthen and unify member associations of FTAN and raise the visibility of the body to begin to engage appropriate institutions.

Bulgarian Ambassador, other tourists witness Sallah durbar in Katsina

T he Bulgarian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Yanko Yordanov, has described the Sallah Durbar in Katsina State as beautiful and colourful.

Speaking to Tribune online at the sidelines of the Hawan Bariki Durbar, which was held today, Thursday, at the Old Government House in Katsina, Mr Yordanov said he was in Katsina State State to witness the festival, which attracts tourists from different parts of the world.

“I feel very honoured to be here to see the richness and wealth of the culture and tradition of Katsina State.

“This is wonderful and amazing; we have something similar in Bulgaria in terms of the beautiful arrangements and colourful performance, he said.

Ambassador Yordanov is one of many foreign tourists who visited Katsina and Daura to witness this year’s durbar festival, where district heads and other traditional title holders move in batches around major streets on horseback.

Earlier, the State Governor, Dr Dikko Radda, who assured the Bulgarian Ambassador and other tourists of their safety while on such visits, pledged continued support to the Katsina and Daura emirates towards organising durbar festivals.

He said the state government will continue to invest in tourism and other key sectors that include education, healthcare, and youth empowerment.
