MindTravel: A Musical & Visual Journey

Murray Hidary

Murray Hidary Mind Travel

Within Murray Hidary, there are multitudes. He’s one of the internet’s first successful entrepreneurs. He’s an outdoorsman, engaging in activities like whitewater kayaking, paragliding through mountains, running marathons, rock climbing and scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef. He’s a visual artist with a passion for photography. And he’s a scholar studying theoretical physics, eastern philosophy and Zen buddhism.

What you’ll see when you buy a ticket to one of his performances is a one-of-a-kind experience that channels all these influences. Murray Hidary’s  MindTravel  is an “immersive music experience” built around his own musical language and journey.  MindTravel  is designed to evolve and connect to a higher sense of purpose while allowing experiencers to transform, celebrate and think.

The show is created by merging what Hidary considers to be the four pillars of an optimal integrated musical experience:

  • Contemporary classical music
  • Theoretical physics
  • Wisdom traditions

Hidary has been refining this artform for years not only by incorporating elements from his multifaceted life but also the skills he’s gained from a lifetime of musical training. From the time he was five years old, Murray was playing music and began to develop his unique voice as a teenager. Hidary was then accepted to NYU to study music and theoretical composition and composed his first symphony at 30. But, it wasn’t until 2013, at the first Mindtravel  show – in Murray’s living room – that his musical destiny was defined.

After the crowd’s emotional response to his first  Mindtravel  performance, Murray threw his passion into creating unique immersive experiences to share with the world.

Since that fateful first show, Murray Hidary has created more than 500 MindTravel  experiences that have been heard and felt around the world in multiple cities including (but certainly not limited to):

  • New York City
  • Los Angeles
  • Boulder, Colorado
  • London, England
  • Paris, France
  • Berlin, Germany

The venues playing host to Murray Hidary and  MindTravel  are as varied as the experiences themselves. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Grace Cathedral, The National Arts Club, The Theater at the Ace Hotel and Lincoln Center are just a few of the more famous places that Murray has performed.

A good crowd turned out to experience nature’s finest symphony in the heart of New York City with  MindTravel Elemental , a tactile and fully immersive meditative experience at Sony Hall on April 13, 2022. In collaboration with  MindTravel (a curated musical experience dedicated to meditation and mindfulness),  Elemental  will feature multi-disciplinary artist and tech pioneer Murray Hidary with the help of Sony’s 360 Reality Audio, to create a true escape from the fastest paced city in the world. Combining Sony’s high-tech, immersive 360 Reality Audio with the tranquil, meditative experience of Murray Hidary’s  MindTravel ,  Elemental  is designed to lift participants into a deeply meditative space.

Per New York City’s guidance, Sony Hall is requiring all guests, staff & musicians ages 12+ to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to enter. Children ages 5 to 11 must have received at least one dose. Proof of vaccination may include your physical CDC card, photo of your CDC card, NYC Covid Safe App, or the NYS Excelsior Pass. In addition to the vaccination policy, New York City continues to encourage masks for all indoor gatherings, except while you are actively eating and drinking.

It’s the weekend. Feeling like maybe going for a walk or a hike? How about listening to a little music, or seeing some art? Maybe relax and find some peace and stillness. Perhaps you want to connect with others or, if you’re feeling ambitious, with yourself? How about taking it to another level to tap into your unconscious, heal past wounds and discover your purpose in life?

What if you could do all of these at the same time?

In a MindTravel event at the J. Paul Getty Museum, a group puts on headphones and embarks on a two-hour tour of the galleries, grounds and gardens while listening to music.

That’s not really what I was planning when I went to the J. Paul Getty Museum for a MindTravel event last month. Yes, I wanted to see some art and enjoy a lovely Saturday afternoon. I didn’t know my world was about to get rocked. But as I met with the MindTravel group and put on headphones to embark on a two-hour tour of the Getty galleries, grounds and gardens while listening to original music and a guided visit — not so much of the paintings but of my inner life — being rocked pretty much sums up what happened.

“My mission is to move people to greater purpose in their lives through music,” Murray Hidary, the founder and creator of MindTravel, told me a few days after my Getty experience. For the last five years MindTravel has taken thousands of people on journeys to open up consciousness states beneath the surface, all while enjoying a pleasant combination of nature, music, art and relaxation on the surface. MindTravel experiences take place in concert halls, museums and parks, on silent walks and hikes, on the beach in Santa Monica, on Crissy Field in San Francisco, in the Olympic pool in Culver City, or walking across the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, among other sites.

But the real action happens internally. Hidary, a composer, concert pianist, cellist, visual artist, tech pioneer, entrepreneur and physics lover, created MindTravel as a way to combine not only his mastery of all of the above but also to share what he developed as a way to expand our perception of the world and ourselves by combining art, nature, music, voice, silence and experience. The result is introspection, connection and emotional healing, whether you want it or not. “It’s not just transportive,” Hidary said. “It’s a transcendent experience.”

Composer Murray Hidary, the founder of MindTravel Music, leads participants through the Getty. "My mission is to move people to greater purpose in their lives through music,” he says.

Transcendence is exactly what happens for some people. Sarah Puil, a senior vice president at an experiential branding agency in San Francisco, went to a MindTravel event for the first time six weeks after having a child with her husband. “It was one of the most therapeutic experiences I’ve ever had,” Puil said. “At that time I was like, ‘What am I doing with this baby? Who am I? What is my identity?’ It was the perfect opportunity for me to let go and explore what this new universe meant for me,” Puil said. “Postpartum [depression] is really real. He maybe saved my life.”

Raised in an Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn, Hidary realized at an early age that he was not cut out for the life his family imagined for him. So, after his first year at NYU, and without telling his parents, he bought a one-way ticket on Qantas. First stop? Fiji, where he spent four months on an island with no running water or electricity. For a year, he traversed 10,000 miles with his camera, tent and sleeping bag — and occasionally a bike — learning how to choose the right insects to eat, sleep on the side of the road and play the Thai flute along the way. “It was a true coming of age, a true spiritual awakening,” Hidary said.

After returning to NYU and still graduating with his class, he went on to become a tech pioneer, creating one of the earliest websites, one designed to help support organized relief efforts in Rwanda. His next venture involved digitizing the entire catalog of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on his site called EarthWeb.com. By 27, he and his brother had taken their first tech company public; they later launched and sold two more.

Sara Ivanhoe, a yoga and meditation teacher, in one of the galleries at the Getty.

And then there is his music. As a child he played cello and then piano and, by the time he was in high school, he knew he wanted to be a composer. At age 33, Hidary wrote and recorded his first symphony in St. Petersburg, Russia. But when MindTravel became a platform for performance — his — he decided to up his game to concert-pianist level. He was living in New York City, and though he would play the piano for hours every night in his Tribeca apartment to de-stress, he craved less distraction (Jay-Z was his neighbor and he says he used to run into Beyoncé in the elevator all the time, for example). So, he moved to Los Angeles.

When he plays the piano during a MindTravel event (the beach, parks and concert halls involve his live music; the silent hikes and walks play his recorded music while he speaks), he composes on the spot according to his feelings and the surroundings. The music is piped into headphones through a radio transmitter he sets up at the venue. Hidary calls this “part musical journey, part meditation through music.”

But this is not typical meditation. Sara Ivanhoe, a yoga and meditation teacher, and a friend of Hidary’s since the late ’90s, said, “It’s more like, ‘Let’s get comfortable exploring and being present with the evolving world, whatever that may be.’ That’s the skill we need for life, not to stop and meditate, but tools to help us navigate what life throws at us.”

You might think that being at a museum with headphones on would feel solitary, but it ends up being oddly connecting. “It’s both an individual practice and a collective shared experience,” said Laura Lekkos, who is pregnant and took the Getty MindTravel journey with husband Dimitri. “You’re in your own thought bubble but doing it with a group, so it’s a communal experience. That duality is pretty interesting to me.”

Keith Mitchell, a former NFL football player, was among those who joined the two-hour MindTravel event at the Getty in May.

Hidary said it’s a personal practice first, because you can’t make any difference out in the world unless you change yourself first, but there is a ripple effect.

“Self-connection is how MindTravel all started,” Hidary says. At the time he began exploring music and its larger impact, he was grieving from the loss of his sister, whom he had seen die in a motorcycle accident in South Africa.

“After the death of my sister, I thought, ‘How do I deal with this?’ I was looking at those layers, emotional, physical, spiritual, and knew I needed to address each of them to get through it.” So he used music to “tackle the emotional level to get this pain out of me. I have no words to express it. Music can fill that role — it’s such a complicated and magnificent language of expression.”

He explained that though he used music to get through the most unimaginable tragedy in his life, we all experience micro-traumas every day, from getting cut off on the 405 to a friend speaking to us in a hurtful way. So it’s important to tend our emotional gardens so we don’t carry anger into the world. “There are paths to do that work,” he said. “I’ve never found anything more powerful than music.”

Hidary was determined to transform his pain into beauty and make a real difference. “That’s where all this comes from,” he said. In the past year he created the MindTravel Foundation to serve those dealing with grief and trauma. He brings MindTravel events to at-risk adolescents, veterans, homeless and low-income senior centers (for example in Santa Monica) filled with “rampant loneliness.” With the help of volunteers, MindTravel headsets with Hidary’s recorded or live music are placed on the residents. They light up. Hidary said, “That’s the mission — not just to bring purpose but to bring healing.”

Rudo Terry taking in the moment.

As for my own MindTravel experience, I did travel through the weed-filled gardens of my emotions, re-experiencing feelings that just maybe I buried on purpose but that resurfaced to embolden me to do more than turn on Netflix (research!) that night. On the way home from the Getty, I did get cut off on the 405, but then I slept 11 hours.

By the next morning, the world really did seem a better place.

Tickets for the Getty SilentWalk were $20 per person (admission to the Getty is free). The next MindTravel events in the L.A. area are a “silent piano experience” and SilentHike at the Spiritual Glamper in Malibu on June 15 ($75) and an “underwater music experience” at the Culver City Plunge on June 16 ($35-$50). This article has been refreshed with new places to explore while in St. Pete, new photos, and tips for vacationing here. Whether someone wants to visit the pier, lay in the sand, stroll through a park, or even spend the day admiring art: St. Petersburg has it all. Have fun!

Things To Do

With several museums and art galleries, the city has all it takes to give vacationers a lengthy bucket list of things to do during their visit. Consider this the ultimate guide to vacationing in St. Petersburg, Florida.

1 St. Pete Pier

One fun spot to check out while in St. Petersburg is the all-new St. Pete Pier. Here, people can look out onto the beautiful blue Gulf of Mexico and enjoy the city's picturesque skyline. This pier extends into Tampa Bay from downtown St. Petersburg and is one of the more popular things to do while here.

The St. Pete Pier recently underwent a massive renovation, giving tourists an all-new property to check out during their vacation. There are also beaches nearby, so this is the perfect spot to spend a few hours during the afternoon.

Furthermore, St. Pete Pier recently underwent a reconstruction and renovation, meaning those who see it moving forward get to experience the all-new property. On top of the pier, there are also beaches nearby, making this a great stop before or after tanning and swimming.

Florida has some of the best beaches in the United States, making St. Petersburg the perfect place to enjoy them.

One thing to remember when visiting this pier and the beaches nearby is that parking can be difficult during weekends and holidays. Therefore, it might be a better idea to take a taxi/Uber/Lyft to the St. Pete Pier and then walk to the beach. This could end up saving the group trouble at the start or finish of their day in the sun.

2 Tropicana Field

Anyone wanting to watch a sports game while in St. Petersburg, they will likely be heading over to Tropicana Field. This is a multi-use sports arena located within the city of St. Pete. Here, people can experience a world-class stadium with drinks, food, memorabilia, and on-site parking.

According to the MLB , Tropicana Field's 1.1 million square feet include unique design features and fan amenities found nowhere else in the Major Leagues. This sets the venue apart from others in Florida, making it a hub for sports lovers near and far.

What makes this stadium nice is it is domed, meaning people in Florida can escape the summer heat and humidity while inside. There are many sports stadiums and arenas in Florida that are open to the natural elements, which can make watching a sports game uncomfortable during hotter months.

Therefore, if someone wants to see a baseball game, for instance, while in St. Pete, they want to come here.

3 St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market

If someone in St. Pete wants to live life like a local on the weekends, heading to the Saturday Morning Market will be fun. Here, people gather to sell homemade crafts, fresh produce, fruit, and plants, all while enjoying live music at a lively venue.

This is a hub for local creatives and those from all of South Florida.

  • For the hours of this market, tourists can expect it to be open every Saturday from 9 AM to 2 PM.
  • Address: 230 1st St SE, St. Petersburg, FL 33701

Of course, there could be weather restrictions or other holidays to be aware of, which could affect the market hours. It's a good idea to keep a close eye on their website before heading out.

The St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market is open weekly from 9 AM to 2 PM. This could be a nice way to support local businesses and creators and should be a few hours of fun. It's worth noting that because of the 2 PM closing time, people may want to head over here earlier than later in the afternoon. During peak seasons, the market can become heavily crowded, so that is another detail to remember.

4 Fort De Soto Park

With its numerous parks, St Petersburg offers an abundance of green areas to relax or have a picnic. These parks mostly front Tampa Bay, Mexican Gulf, or inland lakes, adding to their visual appeal and ambiance.

The advantage of this waterfront and park integration is that apart from hiking and sightseeing , one can engage in water sports activities as well.

Located towards the southernmost part of St Petersburg, the park is a blend of oceanfront beauty and rich flora existing on five scenic islands (or offshore keys). Used for military purposes in the past, the park hosts a historical fort, a museum documenting this rich history, as well as relics from its past.

In addition, there are two piers where visitors are allowed to fish and two beaches, North Beach and East Beach, which are ideal for swimming.

It also has nature trails for hiking, a canoe trail for some on-water exploration, a camping ground with amenities for comfort, and a pet playground.

For some waterside activities, there are playgrounds, tennis courts, benches, and a softball pitch.

St Pete Beach

While St Petersburg is home to some beautiful beaches in its own right, it is also close to other small towns and cities with meticulous beaches. First among these is St Pete Beach, located to the west of St Petersburg, and which occupies the territory of Long Key. Sandwiched between the waters of Boca Ciega Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, it offers several miles and beaches of pure goodness.

20 Tips For Visiting St. Petersburg, Florida

For people wanting to visit St. Petersburg, Florida, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, where someone stays in the city can affect how much time they'll spend in the car. Therefore, it's recommended to book a hotel in the downtown area, where walking to attractions, restaurants, and shopping will be easier.

In addition, it might also be worth it to invest in a GO card for those wanting to ride the bus in St. Pete. With a GO card, tourists can reload it, tap it once they are on a city bus, and monitor how much they are reloading the card throughout their vacation. What's nice about St. Pete is that the city heavily invests in its bus network, giving visitors a nice, affordable way to get around.

The next tip for visiting St. Pete is to make sure and come during less hot times. As mentioned, the city can become swampy during the summer months, making outdoor activities challenging. The last thing anyone wants to do is be soaked with sweat their entire vacation, so spring and winter are the two best times to be here.
