Nandi Hills also called Nandi Durga is arguably the most popular weekend destination for the city crowd of Bengaluru. The rivers North Palar, South Pennar, Chitravathi, Arkavathi and Papaghni take their birth at Nandi Hills. It has been under the control of Paleyagars of Chikkaballapura, Tipu Sultan, Marathas and finally the British. It was called ‘ Nandigiri’ in the ancient inscriptions. The bracing air and serene environs of Nandi Hills, perched at an altitude of 4850 feet above sea level, provided the British and Tipu Sultan with an idyllic summer retreat. The weather at the hills is pleasant throughout the year and here, you can take leisurely strolls. Adventure sports lovers can try their hand at parasailing. An ideal trekking destination, the prominent places which can be visited from Nandi hills are to the north-west-Channakeshava Betta (4762 ft), south-west Brahmagiri (4657 ft), north, Skandagiri (4749 ft) south the steep precipice and the well at the bottom called “ Shravana Tirtha. ”

Why visit Nandi Hills: Historical Significance:  It is believed that the fort walls here were built by the Paleyagars of Chikkaballapura and later strengthened by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. It was under the Maratha control for some time. The precipice to the south-west has the name “Tipu’s Drop”, which is believed as the place where prisoners condemned to death were pushed down to the valley below. At the centre of the plateau, a big water pool has been dug out and a rectangular stone structure is built for the storage of water. The pool is named “Amrit Sarovar.”

Temples in Nandi Hills: Two ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva are located in the Hills. The Yoganandishwara Temple on top of the Nandi Hills has the architecture of the Chola style. The garbhagriha entrance of this temple has decorative brass covered doors and dwarapalakas (door keepers) on either side. It is said that these doorkeeper images were the gifts of Krishnadevaraya, the Vijayanagara ruler. Located in a village Nandi Grama near to Nandi Hills is the Bhoganandishwara Temple. The original temple belongs to a period prior to the 9th century A.D. with later additions during Chola, Hoysala and Vijayanagara periods. In this Bhoganandishwara temple complex, there are two separate garbhagrihas in one straight line, with separate Nandimantapas. Of these Nandimantapas, one has a little garbhagriha also. The temple to the north is dedicated to Lord Bhoganandishwara and the southern one to Lord Arunachaleswara. The exquisite stone fringes in them display ornate workmanship and artistry.

Tippu’s Summer Residence : Remains of a small two-story building, used by Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan can be seen on top of the Hills.  A pond and a garden are nearby.

Parks & Play areas: Nandi Hills has a garden/play area for families and kids to relax and play.

Sunrise : Sunrise on top of Nandi Hills is captivating. Aim to reach before sunrise time to enjoy the view.

Food: A line of eateries are available on top of the Hills and caters to your culinary needs. Several shopkeepers and sellers also cater to the requirements of the visitors. More restaurants can be found on the highway en route to the Hills

Points to note: Beware of monkeys trying to snatch food. Also, traffic restrictions may be enforced during busy weekends. Visitors may be required to park at the base of the hill and avail shuttle buses to reach the Hills. Otherwise, you can drive up to the parking lot and climb your way to the top.

How to reach Nandi Hills: Nandi Hill is best reached in a private vehicle or taxi from Bengaluru, 60 km away. Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru is just 35 km from the hills.

A visit to Nandi hills can also be clubbed with a visit to Muddenahalli (birthplace of Sir M Vishveshwarayya) 20 km from Nandi Hills, Devanahalli Fort (25 km), Ghati Subramanya temple (30 km) and Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple (15 km).

Watching the sunrise from the viewpoint was a mesmerizing experience; the view of the surrounding landscape was breathtaking, and I got some stunning pictures. Exploring the Nandi Fort was a bit of an adventure, and the historical significance of the place added to its charm. The beautiful Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple was a serene spot to visit. Throughout the day, I enjoyed the cool climate and the tranquil ambiance, which made it a perfect escape from the city. Overall, Nandi Hills is a wonderful destination for solo travelers seeking solitude, natural beauty, and a touch of history. The Circuit

Route map –  Bangalore – Nandi Hills – Bhoganandishwara temple – Muddenahalli – Devanahalli Fort – Bangalore

Total Distance – 139 KMs

7 AM – Depart from home. Those who are in North and East Bangalore, it is easy to hit Airport road. For those of us staying in South Bangalore you have to either wade through the city or go via NICE road and exit at Tumkur road. Take the first available U Turn and then turn left at Peenya junction and continue on Outer Ring Road till you reach Airport road.

8 AM – You can have your breakfast in  India Paratha Company  or  Nandi Upachar or Srinidhi Vaibhava on the highway.

9 AM – Depart for Nandi hills. Drive on the highway for few kilometres and then turn left at the prominent signage. Drive on the good road and follow the signage. As you start climbing the hill, the road turns curvy with few hair pin bends. Make sure you drive safe.

10 AM – Arrive at Nandi hills. Spend two hours exploring the hills – Tippu Drop, Shiva temple, the birth place of Arkavathy river, Cubbon house – the British bungalow built for Lord Cubbon, check out few viewpoints – The KSTDC restaurant has some fabulous views.

12 Noon – Depart from the hill and come to Bhoga Nandishwara temple in Nandi village. A lovely temple built during Vijayanagar period – 16th century -, it is a photographers’ paradise. The huge Temple tank and surroundings are peaceful. Appreciate the sculptural heritage of the temple.

1.30 PM – Depart temple. You can have lunch in many Dhabhas/restaurants at the junction where the road climbs up to the hill from the highway. The food is quite decent.

3 PM – After lunch drive to Muddenahalli for a quick stop over at Sir M Vishweshvariah’s ancient home which is now turned into a nice museum. An icon of modern India, Sir MV as is fondly called was awarded Bharataratna in 1955.

Sir MV’s ancient house. Now converted into a museum.

4 PM – After visiting Muddenhalli, if you are not tired, pay a visit to Devanahalli fort. This is the place where the great Tippu Sultan was born. A majestic fort with gateways and bastions, it still has Tippu and Hyder Ali’s houses maintained in good condition. The temples inside the fort built during Vijayanagara period have lovely sculptures. Spend an hour exploring the fort.

Entrance to Devanahalli Fort

5.30 PM – Depart for Bangalore

Travel Tips

a) It is good to be there in Nandi Hills early in the morning when there is no rush. Sunrise at Nandi Hills is an experience. But you can expect large crowd during weekends in the morning.

b) Nandi Hills will get crowded during weekends. Our recommendation is to avoid going there on weekend if you want a quiet outing.

c) Expect rash driving by motorcyclists on the hill road. Be aware of few drunken youths as well.

d) Bhoga Nandishwara temple at the foothills and Venugopala Swamy temple inside Devanahalli fort are fine specimens of Vijayanagara style of Architecture. Talk to the priests of these temples for interesting stories.

e) Make sure you have a good cap. Sun will be harsh in the afternoon.

f) Avoid going to the edge of the hill for clicking pictures with valley in the background. Many have lost live when they lost balance and fell from the hill.

g) Sunrise from October till June is a lovely experience. Weekends are good times to go if you don’t want to experience crowds.

Acquiring the name from the tall statue dedicated to the deity Nandi built on the hilltop, Nandi Hills is a hill station that has gradually been discovered by visitors over the years. Now a famous weekend getaway for the residents of Bangalore, it was also the place where Tipu Sultan sought to escape the heat of the plains and the din of battle.

Situated at a height of 4,851 ft above sea level, all the prominent dignitaries like Queen Elizabeth II, Mahatma Gandhi, and more have enjoyed a stay in Nandi Hills. It is scattered with monuments and shrines featuring majestic pillars and beautifully carved arches with intricately painted walls and ceilings. Being a hidden gem surrounded by enthralling views of hills and valleys ,  a convoy of weekenders travel here in the early hours just to catch a glimpse of the sunrise from atop.

The weather here is pleasant throughout the year but the best time to visit these hills is between September and May since the roads could be slippery and difficult to climb up during the remaining monsoon months. It is best if you are on the hilltop before sunrise since afternoons can be sweltering during summer. So plan your trip early in the morning at around 5.30 AM to catch the beautiful sunrise. The Nandi Hills remain open from morning 6 AM to 10 PM at night.

This Nandi Hills guide will help you plan out every aspect of your trip, adding to the overall experience of the place and making it an absolute paradise to be in.

nandi hills tour from bangalore

Bangalore’s own little hill-station

Nandi hills needs no introduction to a lot of people from Bangalore. Ask any Bangalorean a quick getaway location away from the city for a day trip and viola, ‘Nandi hills’ is the place most suggested.

To a lot of people it is just a small little hillock best enjoyed for its cool weather along with beautiful sunrise/sunset, having the remains of the fort built by the 18 th century ruler Tippu Sultan. There is a certain truth to that statement, but there is more to it than that.

Quite recently I decided to explore this place. We were 3 of us who set off at 7am in the morning from South Bangalore, covering a distance of approx. 70kms in 2.5hrs. This included a quick breakfast stop in between, in a place called Sri Krishna Garden, where some idli, vada, kara bath and puri did the job of filling us up with carbs for what was to come ahead.

Most people drive up to the hills. But our plan was to trek up using the old stairway, used during Tippus time. So instead of taking the left turn on the Nandi hills road, we took a right and headed to Sultanpet for the starting point of this trek. Google map shows this as ‘Nandi hills trek starting point’ but we took the help of locals in finding the direction the old – fashioned way.

On reaching the foothills of the trek point at 9.30am, we set off on foot climbing the stairs which is relatively easy but takes around an hour to reach one of the fort entrances. The trek itself was a pleasant one, where we pass through few resting points along the way made of granite stones which look old. The path is well shaded with a lot of trees and pleasant breeze to counter our sweat, and beautiful view points along the way to treat our eyes.

On entering the fort walls we first pass through a small Shiva temple called Sri Gavi Veerabadhra Swamy temple which is inside of a small cave formation. The priest told us that the temple is an old one dating to more than 500 years back. Continuing further we come across Tippu’s rest house which is a two – storey red building, which the Sultan used often during his glory days.

Further up we came across the Amrutha Sarovara, a step well reservoir built in 1928 and if you spend some time here looking at the water you can see big orange fish jump out of the water, which is quite fascinating. It is also a great spot for taking pictures, and the reason why a couple were dressed elaborately for what seemed to be a pre-wedding photoshoot accompanied by their photographer.

While trying to get around the step-well we discovered a spot right behind it, which often misses the visitor’s eye. The entrance to this was quite tricky, and we really had to break a few rules to get across the fence to this place, and boy was it worth it! It looked like a place out of a fairy tale, where a small path, above which there was tree branches hovering over, led to a small statue of a Nandi and an even smaller one beside it, looking over at the Amrutha Sarovara.

nandi hills tour from bangalore

Soaking in the vibes of this magical place we walked further up the hills and made a climb towards Tippus drop point and although we did not go all the way towards it, the views from here are quite nice. On a summer day this would be very hot place, being a barren rock with no trees in sight. Walking up, this boulder formation gives way to old stone steps that goes up to the Yoganandeeshwara temple. This is an old Shiva temple dating back to 1000 years, which represents his final renunciation stage (his childhood, youth and married stage is depicted in the beautiful Bhooganandishwara temple at the base of Nandi hills). We spent a bit of time here looking around the temple, where you can see carvings on the granite flooring, inscriptions on the entrance wall and even a small step well inside the temple premises.

A glass bridge near Hotel Mayuri, is where you can see lot of tourists hovering over for the view point. There are quite a few monkeys in this area too, and we spotted one on this bridge, eating away some ice-cream reluctantly given away by a tourist, who anticipated some trouble if he hadn’t. Hotel Mayuri located besides the bridge is the only proper sit down restaurant on the top where you can grab some lunch, and although the food isn’t so great, the view from here, certainly is! There are a few smaller tea/coffee shops that serve some quick fast food and snack items.

After lunch we took the small pathway towards the fort walls and walked around a little getting lost, but finally reached the point which happened to be the source of the river Palar. Right around the same area is also a small shrine of Nandi which is referred to as the Nellakai Nandi (Nellakai meaning gooseberry) whose tree is outside of the shrine.

It was time to head back early, since we also had a descent to make through the same stone steps we took up. On the way back we made a last stop to have a look at The Cubbon House, which was built in the mid 1800’s as a summer retreat for Mark Cubbon (the British commissioner after whom Cubbon park has been named). This was undergoing renovation, but you could still see some old chandeliers and wood work from that period.

The descent takes about the same time as getting on top, which is about an hour, although I took a few minutes longer due to my bad knees. It was 3.30pm at the base of the Nandi hills, and getting back to Bangalore city wasn’t too much of a problem leaving the part near the Hebbal flyover (there is always such slow-moving traffic here) We made it just before the peak hour traffic could begin.

A nice cup of coffee back home was what made the perfect end to this day’s adventure 🙂

Lepakshi is a village in Andhra Pradesh State which is one of the cultural day getaways from Bangalore. Lepakshi is mainly a pilgrimage place, though it captures the attention of architecture and culture enthusiasts as well. Lepakshi is the place where Jatayu (bird) fell in a battle with Ravana (demon in Hindu mythology). Jatayu fell in an attempt to save Sita (wife of Lord Rama) from Ravana who captured her. Lord Rama, on the way to find his wife, saw Jatayu wounded from his battle and commanded it to rise. Le Pakshi literally means “rise, bird” in Telugu (the language spoken in the state of Andhra Pradesh). You may start this tour in the morning at around 08.00hrs and reach Lepakshi at 10.00 hrs and spend time till lunch. Leave from here at around 14.00 hrs and reach Nandi Hill around 16.00 hrs to see the sun set and return to Bangalore at around 19.30 hrs. Pick up and drop service from your location, be your hotel or any place within 30kms of Central Bangalore.

Lepakshi Nandi

Nandi statue is another famous site in Lepakshi. Nandi (mostly represented as a bull) is a vehicle of Lord Shiva.  Lepakshi Nandi is the biggest in India (in the world as well). It is believed that this Nandi statue was carved out of a single granite. It is another architectural wonder of Lepakshi.

Jatayu (bird) fell in a battle with Ravana (demon in Hindu mythology). Jatayu fell in the attempt to save Sita (wife of Lord Rama) from Ravana who captured her. Lord Rama, on the way to find his wife, saw Jatayu wounded from his battle and commanded it to rise. Le Pakshi literally means “rise, bird” in Telugu (the language spoken in the state of Andhra Pradesh).

Nandhi Hills

Nandi Hill is a small hill town which houses a fortress. It is at an altitude of appx. 1500 Mtrs and thus has very salubrious climate all the year round. The fortress is in itself undergoing renovation and being readied for the modern day traveller with food courts and other facilities. On account of the weather, it was the summer capital of Tipu Sultan the then ruler of the erstwhile Mysore province. Tipu’s drop is another interesting point, where in the condemned prisoners were either pushed to or thrown to death. There are other tourist spots like the horse way, secret escape route etc… Incidentally, the place also keeps a botanist intrigued with the local flora too.
