From train rides through the countryside to private tours with your own chauffeur, these are the best Napa Valley wine tours based on recent traveler reviews. Note that participants must be 21 or older to participate in any of the recommended outings.

Napa Valley Wine Train – The Legacy Experience

Price: From $625 per person Duration: 6 hours

One of the most popular ways to explore California wine country, the Napa Valley Wine Train offers a variety of experiences. Travelers wanting to visit some of the wineries should book The Legacy Experience, which stops at three vineyards, including two of the best wineries in Napa Valley : V. Sattui and Charles Krug. It also includes a photo-op at the historic Welcome to Napa Valley sign, a four-course meal (served throughout the day) and a welcome glass of sparkling wine. All wine tasting fees are included in the tour rate.

The tour lasts six hours in total, three of which are spent on the train. Check-in begins at 9:45 a.m., the train departs at 10:15 and the tour concludes around 4:30 p.m. Despite the steep cost of tickets (which varies by day), travelers say this Napa Valley wine tour is a must. They also note how delicious the food is.

Napa Valley Wine Trolley – Daily Tour

Price: From $125 per person Duration: 6.5 hours

Explore California wine country aboard one of the Napa Valley Wine Trolleys, which resemble San Francisco's iconic open-air cable cars. The six-hour Daily Tour stops at three wineries in the lower half of the valley; specific wineries vary from day to day. Drivers double as guides and provide information about the region and its best-known product, and patrons generally find them to be both very informative and amusing.

The tour departs from the Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa at 10 a.m. daily, with pickups at select Napa Valley hotels starting earlier. Tickets include transportation, guide gratuity and a picnic lunch, but exclude winery tasting fees, which range from $30 to $40 per person at each winery. If you're looking to visit Castello di Amorosa (the popular winery that resembles a castle) in particular, take the Up Valley Tour .

Platypus Wine Tours – Join-in Wine Tour of the Napa Valley

Price: From $130 per person Duration: 6.5 hours

Platypus Wine Tours escorts tour-takers to three area wineries over the course of approximately 6.5 hours. Wineries visited depend on availability and change from one tour to the next, though they tend to be small, family-owned operations. Drivers/guides earn enthusiastic praise for being knowledgeable, professional and personable. Tours typically depart from a central location in Napa (for those driving into Napa), but pickups from nearby hotels are also available. Group sizes range from eight to 12 participants.

Tickets include a picnic lunch at one of the stops as well as bottled water aboard the bus. Tasting fees at the wineries are not included. Platypus also offers tours of Sonoma Valley as well as private tours.

Best Napa Valley Tours

Napa Valley Bike Tours – Full-Day Napa Valley E-bike Tour

Price: From $199 per person Duration: 5.5 hours

Cycle to two different wineries on this electric bike ride. Along the route, guides share information regarding the region and wine-making, and they are widely regarded as knowledgeable and helpful. The bike tours, which are restricted to six participants, begin in Yountville at 10:30 a.m. and end around 4:30 p.m.; this includes bike fitting and riding instruction.

Tickets include use of an e-bike and helmet as well as lunch from Bouchon Bakery, a local favorite. They do not cover winery tasting fees, though some of these fees may be waived with a minimum wine purchase. The tour covers a total of 12 to 17 miles, with an average 3 to 6 miles between stops. If that seems overwhelming, you can opt for a half-day outing with a stop at one winery.

Beau Wine Tours come highly recommended by travelers, especially for special events.

Frequently Asked Questions

August through October, which coincides with the harvesting season, is the best time to visit Napa Valley . March through May is also a nice, often less-crowded time to visit.

The best Napa wine tours start at around $120 per person; fees will increase depending on tour inclusions (such as meals, gratuities and tastings). Prices may also fluctuate based on tour group size as well as the time of year and day of week.

Yes, it is recommended that you tip both your tour guide and your tasting host at each vineyard. Some tours include gratuities in rates, which may be something you want to look for when booking your tour.

None of the wineries have a dress code, so opt for casual (but not too casual) and comfortable. Think flowy sundresses, wide leg pants, khaki shorts or pants, dark jeans and nice tops (blouses, collared shirts) with sandals or sneakers. You'll also want to bring a light jacket as it can get chilly on some of the vineyards, even in the summer.

Why Trust U.S. News Travel

Amanda Norcross has previously traveled to Napa Valley, visiting select wineries on her own and also with a tour. She always recommends a tour, not just for a designated driver with a local's perspective, but also because you get to meet and imbibe with other fun and interesting tourgoers along the way. She used her personal experience and insights from other travelers to determine the best wine tours in Napa Valley. Cheers!

A First Timer's Guide to Napa Valley

Where do you start your napa valley trip, when there are hundreds of wineries, several michelin-starred restaurants, and plenty more offerings for culture, adventure, and wellness.

No matter where and when you go, you won’t go wrong.

Visit in the spring , and you’ll be greeted by an abundance of wildflowers. In summer , it’s a playground for hiking and biking. In the fall , you’ll get to experience wine country at the height of its harvest. And the mild winters are a chance to enjoy the cozy atmosphere of restaurants with seasonal food and wineries with amazing wine.

This may be your first visit, but we are pretty confident it won’t be your last.

What's On Your Schedule

napa valley group trip

Napa Valley Welcome Center

An inaugural visit to Napa Valley should begin with a stop at the Napa Valley Welcome Center in Downtown Napa. There, you can fine-tune the details of your trip with local experts, pick up maps, take a selfie in front of the wine barrels or hot air balloon, and score special offers from wineries.

Check in to the 62-room Bardessono in Yountville this afternoon. The hotel embraces the spirit of Napa Valley in every aspect of its design and amenities – and prides itself on sustainability , garnering a Platinum LEED certification. Even the smallest rooms feature 250-square-foot terraces where you can enjoy the area's enviable climate. Signature treatments at the hotel's spa incorporate Chardonnay oil and other wine-based ingredients.

Yountville makes a great base to explore Napa Valley. The compact town, with fewer than 3,000 residents, also has plenty of charms of its own. And, a walk the whole way across town is a short one. A number of wineries have tasting rooms here – try Priest Ranch , Cornerstone Cellars , or Hill Family Tasting Room . Or take a short drive to visit Chandon for a tasting of bubbles.

Save the French Laundry, perhaps the area's most famous restaurant, for another evening when you haven't spent the day traveling. Tonight you'll try one of Yountville's more casual options like wood-fired pizzas at Ciccio , or maybe Mustards Grill , an institution that has been serving California cuisine for more than three decades, in a casual low-key setting.

napa valley group trip

Oxbow Public Market

Before you drive south to the city of Napa , stop by the Napa Valley Museum in Yountville. The museum will give you a good historic overview, from the first pioneer winemakers in the 19th century to the phenomenal growth of the region in the last 50 years. In addition to the photos and artifacts in the permanent collection, the museum hosts temporary ones focused on local artists.

It's only a few minutes by car to Napa, the "big city" in the valley, with a population of 80,000. Visit the Oxbow Public Market to peruse its selection of produce, gifts by local craftsmen, and outposts of popular restaurants. It's a good spot for a light lunch from places like Hog Island Oyster Co. or the Model Bakery .

Afterward, stroll across the river to First Street Napa. Spanning three buzzy blocks in the heart of Downtown Napa, First Street Napa is an ever-growing hub for shopping, dining, and tasting. Known for its locally-owned boutiques and independent restaurants and wineries, the district has recently welcomed a surge of new shops like C’est la Paire for chic boots and handbags; The Bennington Napa Valley for vintage finds; and Copperfield’s Books , a mainstay store returning to First Street. Honey Whiskey Boutique as well as nearby Tay & Grace offer up beautifully curated women’s clothing and accessories that capture the Napa Valley lifestyle.

An art of another sort lives on at Napa's Seguin Moreau, where fourth-generation master cooper Douglas Rennie crafts wooden barrels used to age some of Napa Valley's finest wines. The cooperage isn't open to the public, so he encourages visitors to seek out such barrels at wineries like Opus One Winery , Far Niente Winery , Nickel & Nickel , and Duckhorn Vineyards . "A lot of top wineries have them in beautiful showcase tasting rooms; it's really a sight to see when you walk into a cave or cellar and there's barrel after barrel of the traditional hoops."

You might take him up on the advice and detour to Oakville for a tour of Opus One or Far Niente. While in the neighborhood, why not mix things up with an olive oil tasting at Round Pond Estate in Rutherford (you did have a light lunch, after all). Come dinnertime, circle back to Oenotri in Downtown Napa, where you'll be greeted by the aroma of wood-fired pizzas, served along with house-made salumi and rustic Southern Italian dishes.

napa valley group trip

Beringer Vineyards

St. Helena is where the Napa Valley's winemaking history began, specifically at the Beringer Vineyards , which opened in 1879 and is the area's oldest continuously operating winery. Spend some time exploring the mansion – a recreation of the Beringer family home on the Rhine in Germany.

For lunch, St. Helena's Main Street has a variety of restaurants to choose from, including casual fare like small plates and sandwiches at the Harvest Table or bruschetta and salads at the Clif Family Bruschetteria , a food truck parked outside the Clif Family Winery . Make a quick stop and then continue on to a local winery or two.

Charles Krug Winery is Napa Valley's oldest winery, established in 1861 (because of periods of inactivity, it cedes the "continuously operating" distinction to Beringer). Book a private cabana for a leisurely afternoon, and enjoy the opportunity to sample a number of "estate" wines available only here. Crocker & Starr and Louis M. Martini Winery , which also has beautiful new private cabanas, are two options near St. Helena. A plus of these by-appointment-only visits is their intimacy and the chance to spend time directly with the winemakers. You may want to call and schedule yours as soon as you have booked your flights.

Another call you will want to make early on in your planning process is to reserve a table at one of Napa's Michelin-starred restaurants. At Thomas Keller's French Laundry in Yountville, for example, reservations open up two months in advance – and they go quickly. (The concierge at your hotel may be able to help you score a table, though they will also need as much notice as possible.) The nine-course tasting menu isn't cheap, but this is a meal you will likely remember for the rest of your life, with each course of the haute California-French dishes exquisitely plated. Other top choices include PRESS Restaurant in St. Helena, and the Restaurant at Auberge in Rutherford.

napa valley group trip

Chateau Montelena Winery

Start this morning with a visit to the Chateau Montelena Winery . While Napa Valley has been a thriving wine region since the 19th century, it was an event in Paris in 1976 that helped elevate the region's products in the eyes of wine drinkers around the world. In the "Judgment of Paris," a competition between French and California white wines, the French judges decided that Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay was the best of all of them. The tasting room is open daily while the winery also has a lovely 19th-century chateau and a Chinese garden.

At your next stop, you'll have an only-in-Northern-California experience, namely a mud bath in Calistoga . This West Coast spa town has drawn visitors to its hot springs since the 19th century, and a variety of spas, from basic to luxurious, cater to those who want to experience a "bath" in the warm mineral-rich mud that leaves your body relaxed and your skin glowing. Calistoga Spa Hot Springs offers a bath in the volcanic-ash mud, followed by a deep-tissue, sports, or Swedish massage, among other treatments. Afterward, you can take a post-treatment/pre-dinner nap by the pool.

Calistoga offers up several excellent restaurants for dinner before you head back to Yountville for the night. "Up Valley" favorites include Lovina , with an American bistro menu highlighting figs, tomatoes, and other produce grown at local farms. Evangeline has a menu that may be surprising given its location, with a number of Creole and New Orleans dishes, and an inviting patio with orange trees.

Description.

On this intimate small group Napa Valley wine tasting tour from San Francisco, be delighted with the history, architecture, gardens, and memorable toasts with like-minded members of your small group. Your wine enthusiast guide will prepare you for touring and tasting reserve wines at the Castello di Amorosa and two other celebrated Napa Valley wineries.

Learn about Winemaking on the Trip to Napa

Your San Francisco wine tour to Napa Valley begins with enjoying the views from the Bay Bridge. As you travel, learn how Napa’s microclimates and soil types combine to produce the world’s best winemaking grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.

Enjoy Medieval Times at Castello di Amorosa

Corks pop first at Castello di Amorosa, a medieval-styled Tuscan castle winery constructed with authentic 13th-century European materials and furnishings. On your way to vaulted wine cellars, check out the moat, drawbridge, towers, courtyards, and armory. Thankfully, Castello di Amorosa puts the same love and attention into its elegant, intensely flavored, and well-balanced wines.

‘Smile’ at the Napa Valley Welcome Sign

Next, your Napa wine tasting tour makes a fun photo stop at the Napa Valley Welcome Sign. Your lunch break is in charming Calistoga, California. Among its hot springs, elegant spas and yoga studios, you’ll have no trouble finding the perfect lunch spot and perhaps sampling another locally crafted wine with your meal.

Stroll Gardens at V. Sattui Winery

Established in 1885 by Vittorio Sattui, Sattui Winery is a family-owned business known for its nationally acclaimed winemaker, Brooks Painter. Under his guidance, the winery combines artistry, time-honored traditions, and innovation in a “vine to cork” approach, consistently producing award-winning, small lot wines with 90+ points to cater to diverse tastes.

The sprawling estate in St. Helena has beautifully manicured gardens for the seated tasting by friendly, knowledgeable staff.

Experience the Art of Winemaking at Ru Vango

This quintessential Carneros AVA property, once cultivated by the Michael Mondavi Family Estate, is surrounded by rolling hills of planted vineyards. Ru Vango loosely translates to “Road to Art”.  Fittingly, the winery’s tasting salon features a collection of Winn Slavin Fine Art.

What Our Guests Are Saying About Us

The tour is well designed to have enough time to enjoy the different wine tasting

The tour is well designed to have enough time to enjoy the different wine tasting, the location of the vineyards visited were amazing (Castello di Amorosa, Ballentine Winery, Ru Vango Winery). Randall, our tour guide, very knowledgeable about wine and the region. Highly recommended tour for wine connoisseurs and non-experts.

Marta Andreoni, Google

The Napa wine tour was excellent!

Three different winery experiences have a good overview of the region. Time in Calistoga to walk around and have lunch was a nice break. Our driver Alberto was great. Good balance of humour and information throughout the drive and we never felt rushed. Highly recommended!

Wonderful day in Napa!

Fun tour provides great information about Napa wines and wineries. Tasting at the castle was especially worth the trip

Michael Wisnowski , Google

We had a beautiful time in Napa Valley!

Enjoyed wines from the Castello di Amorosa, Madrigal and Ru Vango winery. Randall was a great tour guide with great knowledge on the area and wines. Jackson was our host at Madrigal whose enthusiasm and knowledge added to the wonderful experience- and the breathtaking view from the patio was the cherry on top! Such a great day!

Lindsey Feld , Google

Napa was lovely and we enjoyed the day, but we were blown away by our tour guide, Randall. He was incredibly personable and informative. By the end of the day, he felt like a true friend. This day wouldn’t have been the same without him. He was the very best, such a special person with a passion for wine which contributed to our tour immensely. I would recommend this tour and look forward to coming back!

Jason Broussard, Google

It was a very relaxing experience from start to finish

Our driver, Kimmie was very knowledgeable, accommodating, professional, communicative, warm and was always on time. Overall I would recommend Extranomical wine tours and we truly enjoyed the experience with Kimmie.

All in all, a perfect day!

Excellent small group (12 guests) tour of Napa and three wineries. Our first stop at the Castello di Amorosa Winery near Calistoga, at a huge castle, was both memorable and exciting. Plenty of time for lunch in Calistoga, followed by two wineries in the afternoon. Last stop was at the Golden Gate Bridge for photos. Our tour driver and representative for this day (Randall) was both knowledgeable and humorous.

Fantastic day in Napa!

We totally enjoyed our tour guide, Randall. He was very knowledgeable and shared many interesting facts with us. I’d love to do another tour with him! We had 3 very diverse experiences at the three wineries. Our favorite was Castillo Di Amorosa, a very unique experience and their wines are fabulous.

Our guide Kimmy was super knowledgeable and upbeat.

She made constant effort to ensure everyone was comfortable throughout the trip. Also, everything wss very punctual. Great experience! All three wineries we visited were well chosen as they were all unique to one another, providing us a diverse tour for our first Napa experience.

She made constant effort to ensure everyone was comfortable throughout the trip. Also, everything wss very punctual. Great experience! All three wineries we visited were well chosen as they were all unique to one another, providing us a diverse tour for our first Napa experience. Our semi private tour was with 3 other couples (8 in total), all from different parts of the world (Quebec, London and Florida...and we were from Vancouver)..so that was a great experience too. Highly recommend.

Randall, our tour guide was most knowledgeable.

He gave great tips on how to prepare for wine tastings, maneuvering around the castle, etc. He was very helpful. The employees there were very helpful and friendly. We really enjoyed our time in San Francisco. Great time from the Dallas, Tx group. Go Cowboys!

Finally, the tour kicks back on Ru Vango’s wrap-around porch overlooking their Carneros AVA vineyard. Note: wineries are subject to change.

The Ultimate Napa Valley Travel Guide – 2024

If you’re looking for  the ultimate travel guide to Napa Valley – look no further.

To me, there’s no vacation quite like Napa.

Picture-perfect vineyards rolling over the golden hills of California, Five-star farm-to-table restaurants with wine lists bigger than their entire menus, cozy, understated resorts with soothing spas and bubbling hot tubs, tennis courts teeming with relaxed vacationers, golfers with bottles of wine carefully tucked neatly into their carts, Bikers biking the valley from winery to winery. Cuddling up to a fireplace in your suite with a glass of the best red wine you’ve ever had.

If this sounds like your paradise as much as it does mine, let’s toast to Napa Valley.

SOME QUICK NAPA HISTORY:

In 1976, a wine tasting called “The Paris Tasting” took place in France that changed the future of California wines forever. Like crusty old admissions officers contemplating the acceptance of an eager freshman into their established, hundreds-of-years-old University, accredited French wine professionals blind-tasted French red and white wines against California Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays, and, shocking just about everyone in the world as much as it shocked the tasters themselves, the California wines won. Stags Leap Wine Cellar’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Chateau Montelena’s Chardonnay took first place and, for the first time in history, it became clear that someone could rival the French when it came to wine . Somms all over France scratched their heads while California, and the rest of the world, responded rapidly. In the next ten years, the number of California wineries more than tripled, and, in the 40 years since the tasting, the quality and price of California wines has climbed sevenfold, soaring their retail value to over $14 billion last year.

If I sound passionate about this, it’s because I absolutely am.

I love wine.

napa valley group trip

I love the complexity of everything that goes in to creating this drink that humans have enjoyed for thousands of years. I love how a bottle of wine evolves immensely with time, and with each person’s unique taste. I love thinking about how much has to go exactly right in creating a great bottle of wine… and more than anything, I love that vineyards, like people, must go through immense stress in order to bear better fruit.

A perfect environment will create a mediocre, ordinary wine. A struggling vine will produce an extraordinary wine. They say that this is why the Napa Valley makes such amazing wines, as the earthquake faults under the ground make for nicely complex and diversified soil, and a perfectly stressful environment for Napa vines to grow.

Where to wine taste in Napa Valley

There are hundreds of wineries to taste wine in Napa, Yountville, Saint Helena, Calistoga , Sonoma, and Healdsburg, so it can be overwhelming to choose where to wine taste – and the truth is there are VERY different wine tasting experiences to choose from – so here are my favorites, broken out by type of tasting experience to help you find the perfect wineries for your trip:

*JETSET TIP* Be sure to google map out your wineries ahead of time. I’d recommend no more than 3 in a day for most people (You can poteeeentially do 4, but it’s really pushing it, I have much better experiences in Napa when I do just a couple per day, and take our time there). Be sure the map of the wineries you choose make sense and are near each other!

The best ‘classic Napa’ wineries

Best for: first-timers to napa, those wanting to learn more about the region, how to wine taste, etc. these are my favorite ‘welcome to napa’ tastings..

Beringer – This beautiful, family-owned winery since the 1800s is a great first tour for first time Napa-goers. They will teach you how to taste wine, pair it with cheese, and the nuances behind each sip. I love the barrel tasting tour because you get to taste directly from cabernet in an aging oak barrel! Also a great winery for groups.

napa valley group trip

Inglenook (Napa) – A splurge of a tasting that, in my opinion, is completely worth it if you’re only in Napa once. this is Francis Ford Coppola’s winery and is a beautiful property with fantastic wines. My favorite? The Rubicon.

Chateau Montelena – This gorgeous ivy-covered chateau was made famous for beating out the French in the Paris Tasting. Their wine is delicious, and the estate is absolutely gorgeous. Make a reservation before you go!

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars (Napa)  – Easily one of Napa’s most famous wineries – Stag’s Leap was the Cabernet Sauvignon that took place in the famous Paris Tasting in the 1970’s. Their Fire & Water tour is incredible – and their cabernets are some of the best in the Valley.

Grgich Hills (Napa) – Fantastic wines in a great atmosphere. Mike Grgich was the winemaker at Chateau Montelena in the 1970’s and soon after his famed win of the Paris Tasting, he went off to create his own label. He and his Croatian family are fantastic and it is immediately evident that this winery is run with the love and care of a family-run venture. I also love their outdoor tasting areas, and think it’s a perfect place to soak up the sunshine if you’re tasting on a sunny day!

Hall Winery (St. Helena) –  Hall Winery makes some seriously good (more high-end) cabernets, and has one of the prettiest tasting areas, too! All tasting are private and conducted outdoors. Reservations are required for all experiences and limited to 6 guests. HALL Winery is located a few minutes drive south from St. Helena – along the busy “wine strip” section of Highway 29 that features some of the larger, historic and more well-known wineries in the valley, so it’s easily accessible during a busy day of tastings! Though it’s easy to get to, the winery is set back from the highway, so it never feels overly busy here. I love it!

Far Niente Winery – Far Niente is well regarded throughout Napa and everywhere as one of the very best wines, and their property is as beautiful and elegant as you would expect. Sister winery to Nickel & Nickel, Far Niente has an amazing tour and tasting for first-timers to Napa who know good wine!

napa valley group trip

Sterling – It’s super touristy but if that’s your vibe, Sterling is famous for its over-the-top gondola ride to their tasting room! A great spot for out-of-towners to get a view of the vineyards. Tastings start at $29.

Del Dotto St. Helena Venetian Estate – If you want to feel like you’re wine tasting in the hillsides of Tuscany, this is your spot. The winery pays homage to the family’s Venetian heritage dating back to 1150.  The cathedral-like estate sits on the original Rutherford vineyard, and the winery and caves is unlike any other property in Napa Valley and a must-see. I love it here!!

The best wineries to taste with a group of friends

Domaine Carneros (Sonoma) – always a go to for bubbly in Sonoma ! BEAUTIFUL spot, and such impeccable service. I love it so much, and spend so much time here, I might as well just move in.

napa valley group trip

Jordan Winery (Healdsburg/Sonoma) – I have always loved Jordan Winery, and all of their wines (champagne, cab sauv, and chardonnay!) It’s one of the most beautiful wineries in Sonoma and they put on a great tasting and tour. Go for a lunch pairing if you can! It’s a must-do in Alexander Valley.

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by Christina Haisfield (@jetsetchristina)

Artesa Winery   (Napa) – Architecturally stunning contemporary winery with a fun Spanish flare (their owners have been making wine in Spain since the 1500’s!) I absolutely loved their pintxo’s food pairing tasting. This place would also be amazing for a group – and is one of the first wineries driving up from San Francisco to the Valley, making it an easy day trip for San Francisco travelers.

napa valley group trip

V. Sattui Winery (Napa) – This lovely winery is perfect for a picnic. They have a big deli full of awesome lunch options and picnic tables outside – their tastings are affordable and the fact that you can bring your own food in makes this a fantastic lunch & wine spot.

Castello di Amorosa (Napa) – it’s a castle, literally. Beautiful spot. One of my favorite places to bring newcomers to Napa because of it’s gargantuan appeal. Tastings starting at $20.

img_4059

With friends at Castello di Amarosa, a great spot for a group

Flowers Winery (Sonoma) – Always a go-to of mine! This beautiful tasting room with insta-worthy outdoor cabanas and indoor spaces. I love their chardonnay and Pinot so much and I buy it at home a lot – however, I must say that although this is one of the most beautiful tastings, I had a very negative experience the last time I was there with their hospitality manager, who was quite rude to our group for no reason! Just a caveat to be aware of!!! Great wine, but could have better service lately.

The best small producer wine tastings in Napa / Sonoma

Best for: Napa honeymooners, those who LOVE wine and are looking for the best of the best in the valley, and are looking to discover new small production boutique, family run wineries.

AXR Winery (Napa)

AXR is my favorite winery right now. Surrounded by redwoods, it’s a beautiful tribute to the way wine tasting in Napa used to be, but with a fun, edgy modern touch that I just can’t get enough of. In the summer, AXR’s outdoor patio is the place to be, and, in the winter, their beautiful main house or chic farmhouse cabanas are all amazing. Every time you taste here you’ll have a different experience  –  and  their wines are SO good. I think I bought an entire case last time I went (I LOVE their chardonnay!)

napa valley group trip

Handwritten wines (Napa)  – this is a new tasting room but a well known wine in Napa Valley – they don’t distribute their wines so everything is only available for members and tasting room visitors! It’s a gorgeous spot right in downtown Yountville – and their chard and cabernet sauvignons are TO DIE FOR. Their winemaker came from Cakebread, Rombauer, La Crema and more before going into Handwritten – so it’s no wonder their chardonnay is so good. But their single vineyard, single varietal cabernets will blow your mind as well.

Palmaz Vineyards (Napa)

If you’re looking for a winery that will blow your mind (with its wines, its views, and its technology), Palmaz is it. Their tagline is ‘the fusion of tradition and technology’ and that’s exactly what tasting there is about. It is a GORGEOUS winery is tucked away all by itself in Napa and is owned by an Argentinean family, who have a love for food, and, of course, meat!! Their legendary Argentinean cookout parties are what club members rave about, and when you join their wine club you even get a beautiful traditional steak knife. Visit in the Summer and you’ll get to taste their small production rose, which I think is one of the best roses in the Valley.

I recommend Palmaz to anyone looking for a really unique tasting, with AMAZING wines.

napa valley group trip

Cornell Vineyards (Sonoma  / WAY up in the mountains)

Another exclusive, blow-your-mind tasting I love is Cornell Vineyards .  (Not to be confused with Cornell Winery). You’ll wind your way up Spring Mountain to this absolutely stunning property, with no other winery in sight. It feels straight out of a movie of Napa / Sonoma in the 70’s. Tractors ride around the property checking the grapes as you get poured a glass of Dom Perignon to kick off the tasting by one of the members of Cornell’s intimate team of 4 people. The views are UNREAL and you’ll taste their DELICIOUS cabernet sauvignons, and feel like you’re at someone’s home.

Cornell is a small production cult-following wine, that collectors rave about and celebrities flock to. Highly recommend checking it out.

napa valley group trip

Kelly Fleming Winery (Calistoga)

This absolutely stunning property is a small production, cult-following wine that you will want to take CASES home of. The caves are absolutely breathtaking and Kelly’s eye for design is felt throughout the stunning property. They only take 8 visitors a day so it’s a super exclusive tasting – Loved this spot.

napa valley group trip

Highly recommend their ‘big pour’ cabernet sauvignon.

Nickel & Nickel – As members of this winery, we go to all of their parties and have had the opportunity to taste here and take the tour many, many times, but every time is better than the last!! I can’t imagine Napa without this little country winery, and I hope you’ll love it. The tour is $65/person, and requires reservations.

The best ultra-high-end wineries to taste in Napa Valley

Promontory (Napa) – One of the most expensive and exclusive tastings in the Valley, Promontory is worth every cent. This STUNNING property sits on just one tiny part of owner a Bill Harlan’s more that 900 untamed, rugged acres of land dubbed “Napa Valley Territory”. The family only began growing grapes here (on less than 10% of the land) in 2008, and immediately knew they had something special. Promontory wine makes less than 2000 cases of this Cabernet magic , most of which are only available at the winery itself, that just opened last summer for private tours only.

Image result for promontory napa

If you’re looking for a Napa valley wine and tasting experience to truly blow you away, this is it.

Opus One Winery – This is one of the most globally recognized names in luxury wine. Tasting is pricey, at $45-$60 a glass, but it’s a bucket list winery! So gorgeous… and incredible wine. Make sure you head straight to the terrace once you get your glass! Some of the best views in Napa.

The best wineries that you love to drink at home to go check out while you’re in town

Caymus Vineyards (Napa) – Great wines! Some of my favorite in Napa. And a absolute picturesque outdoor tasting area. I love their pinot noir and their chardonnay.

Cakebread Wines (Napa)

I love Cakebread’s chardonnay and cabernets, so tasting here is always great. It’s a quick tasting, and located right off of Highway 29, making it an easy stop in a busy wine tasting day. Also LOVE their patio – so beautiful in the summertime.

napa valley group trip

Rombauer – My go-to chardonnay. I always come home with at least a few bottles from here, and they don’t make it a week in San Francisco before they’re gone. Great spot for a casual, pop in tasting. Starting at $20 for a flight.

Trinchero Napa Valley – This beautiful estate’s tasting room is a great stop in Napa. Tastings start at $30 and their cabs are fab.

Joseph Phelps Winery (Napa)  – You’ve probably heard of Joseph Phelps’ famed Insignia label – an insanely good cabernet sauvignon that is worth the trip to this winery alone. Add in a cozy lodge-like tasting room and a terrace like this? It’s a must do.

napa valley group trip

Twomey – located in Healdsburg and also in Calistoga , this is one of my go-to’s for a casual drop-in tasting in the valley. Their pinot’s are so good (they’re under the Silver Oak label) and I always end up walking out with a few bottles.

Where to have a glass of wine with a view in Napa Valley

Auberge Du Soleil – If you don’t stay there during your stay, you can stop by to take in the sunset over a glass of wine on their elegant patio overlooking the valley. Can’t beat this view.

Where to stay in Napa Valley (at every price point)

Auberge du soleil.

Hotel Yountville

One of my favorite areas of Napa Valley to stay is Yountville, because the charming hotels here are within walking distance of such famed restaurants as Bouchon, The French Laundry, Bottega, RH Yountville and more. It’s a great town to walk around or bike around, and you’re right in the vineyards. This is an ideal hotel for so many different types of Napa trips – highly recommend!!! Guests can relax at The Spa, featuring 6 treatment rooms, or at the hotel’s outdoor pool and hot tub. And if you’re wishing to explore, complimentary bike rentals are offered onsite.

This French Chateau-styled hotel has all of the things I love… Fireplaces in the room, a complimentary bottle of wine upon arrival, free champagne breakfast buffet…. and the delicious waffles I crave ALL the time! I think if you’re looking for the perfect Napa experience, Yountville is where you want to be. It’s an adorable small wine town with the best restaurants.

Silverado Resort & Spa

This resort, complete with tennis and its beautiful golf course, is a great option for staying overnight in Napa. Just off the Silverado trail (where many of the wineries I mentioned are), it’s the perfect location for your getaway. The rooms are a bit outdated but I love the big resort feel, it’s a great place for groups, too.

Senza Napa

If you’re looking for a nice, affordable hotel in Napa in the perfect location – this is it. If I’m going up for a weekend or a quick one-night Napa getaway, this is always where I stay. It’s right in the right location (only a 10 minute drive from Yountville, Saint Helena, and most of the wineries I love to taste at), and the rooms are simple, modern and wonderful, each with its own fireplace! The complimentary breakfast is also amazing.

I love staying up in Calistoga – the most Northern part of wine country because it’s secluded, quiet, and has some of the most beautiful hotels ( Auberge Solage is a favorite, as is the cozy chic Cottage Grove Inn !). It’s a beautiful, romantic area of Napa Valley.

Farmhouse Inn

Another one of my top picks for where to stay for luxury in Sonoma County is Farmhouse Inn – a tucked away, understated, inn in Forestville with all the right luxuries you need for a perfect wine country vacay. Think: a Michelin star restaurant (amazing!!!!), complimentary fire pits and s’mores, a dreamy jacuzzi and heated pool, and adorable wine country hotel room bungalows with the most comfortable beds you can imagine!

I also loved that Farmhouse In n is only a 10 minute drive from some of the most DELICIOUS wineries in Northern California – Flowers, Gary Farrell, Twomey, etc! How to get around wine country

Where to eat in napa valley, for breakfast / coffee / juices, southside yountville.

I go here almost every trip to Napa! Obsessed with their chilaquiles and avocado toast with smoked salmon. They also have great coffee (and oat milk lattes, my go-to). So if you’re in a rush to get to the wineries and just want a quick (but delish) breakfast and coffee spot, look no further.

The Station

Casual grab-and-go coffee and AMAZING food. If you’re in the St. Helena area, this is your spot! I love the crustless quiche (so good) and the breakfast burrito.

Napa Valley Juice

This St. Helena health food store has the BEST fresh juices for takeaway. So if you’re addicted to your first-thing-in-the-morning celery juice like me, this is your spot. Also right across the street from the Station so if you’re staying in St. Helena, these two make a perfect morning routine (and you can bike or walk there from your hotel!)

For lunch or dinner

This spot in Yountville ranks right up there with my favorite dinner spots anywhere. Celebrity chef Michael Chiarello brings his top notch chef skills to this amaaaazing contemporary californian-italian restaurant in an atmosphere so uniquely Napa. Check out their incredible wine list and think of me when you order a glass of Nickel & Nickel merlot. The Nickels are great friends with Bottega, and it’s actually where I had my very first glass of my now-favorite wine.

napa valley group trip

RH Yountville

RH Yountville – This chic new contemporary restaurant in Yountville is an instant favorite. Each table is adorned with an over-the-top chandelier, and the beautiful ambiance and decor is matched with the delicious menu. Order the crispy artichokes, the burrata, and definitely try their signature bellini! I also recommend going a little early for a drink at their bar – it is adorable! This is the perfect date spot in Napa.

Farmstead – This farm-to-table restaurant in Rutherford is an amazing spot, and my go-to every time I’m in Napa. Think all-american food with a contemporary California twist. I always start with the grilled artichoke appetizer or the meatballs, and I recently had their barbecued ribs with mac and cheese (amaaaaazing). You can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. And save room for dessert here because it is delicious! Another one of my favorite things about this place- their outdoor bar area with fire pits at night. Not to mention wine on tap. Because, Napa.

Charter Oak I loooove the food (and wine) at Charter Oak! Located in the heart of the Napa Valley by Chef Christopher Kostow of the Michelin three-starred The Restaurant at Meadowood. The Charter Oak is centered on a celebratory, family-style dining experience, with simple, approachable, and seasonal food – grilled meats, beautiful vegetables from our 3.5-acre farm, local wines, and unparalleled cocktails. Lou’s Luncheonette – This is a great brunch or lunch spot in Sonoma, but expect a wait. It is right by Domaine Carneros, so is a great spot to go eat before or after tasting there if you’re in this area. It’s also on the way from SF to Napa, making it the perfect pit-stop.  Mustard’s Grill – A greeaaat spot. This restaurant has been serving up American food to Napa locals and visitors alike for over 30 years. Many people’s favorite.

Brasswood – Another restaurant I love to drink cocktails, wine, and eat an amazing meal at. It’s located basically nextdoor to AXR – one of my favorite wineries. SUPER good food – and the perfect lunch spot in the Valley. Order the homemade mozzarella and thank me later.

The French Laundry – I have not yet had the opportunity to eat at this renowned Napa restaurant, often voted the very best restaurant in the WORLD. But, I have walked by their beautiful organic gardens and often dreamt about eating there one day. Their menu is a 9-course tasting menu complete with wine pairings, and, word on the street is each person has their own waiter. Talk about a dining experience unlike any other, more like you’re eating at someone’s home than in a restaurant.

Angele – delish French cuisine in a riverfront bistro perched up overlooking the Napa River. Great spot if you’re staying closer to downtown! Angele is an oasis where you’ll feel like you’re in Europe!

Bistro Don Giovanni – sit on the patio! Chef Scott Warner’s rustic fare incorporates local fruits, vegetables, meat and fowl into traditional, fresh Italian dishes with her signature, creative flair. Freshly baked breads, local olive oil, beautiful salads, tasty appetizers and homemade pastas are inspired by the bounty of Napa Valley.

When is the best time to go to Napa Valley ?

Napa is one of those few magical places in the world that are beautiful no matter the season. It’s gorgeous in the Summer, almost more beautiful in the Fall with harvest going on, and even stunning in the Winter, on rainy cozy days  (and this is spoken from a Summer worshipper!!) In February, you get mustard season which is just BEAUTIFUL, and one of my favorite times of year to visit.

A first-timer's guide to Napa Valley

Get to know Napa Valley with our first-timer's guide © Cassiohabib / Shutterstock

Napa Valley is synonymous with luxury. Posh hotels, chef-driven restaurants and extravagant tasting fees cemented that reputation decades ago.

But at its core, Napa is farm country— a place where people dig in the dirt and make a living from the land. Despite all odds, this gives Napa a grounded feeling, even in its swankiest spaces. At the end of the day, visitors come to Napa Valley because they love food, wine and beautiful scenery. It’s a passion shared by the community of this incredible locale.

The five towns of Napa Valley (St Helena, Yountville, the city of Napa , Calistoga  and American Canyon) are home to 16 wine appellations and more than 400 wineries. The options can be daunting to first-time visitors but we’re here to help. From mud baths in Calistoga to tips for visiting wineries, our first-timer’s guide to Napa Valley will give you everything you need to know to plan a trip here, including the best hotels, wineries, restaurants and activities.

When is the best time to visit Napa?

It’s always a good time to visit Napa in our book, however, the timing of your trip will impact your experience. Peak tourist season is in summer when the average high temperature is 82°F. If you plan to visit this time of year, you’re unlikely to find any bargains. Make your reservations for lodging, restaurants and wineries as far in advance as you can.

Spring and fall are the next busiest times of the year. Spring brings average high temperatures of 68°F while in fall, high temperatures average 78°F. The lower, but still pleasant, temps are especially appealing for visitors who plan to hike, bike or engage in other outdoor activities.

Winter temperatures reach an average high of 60°F. This season gets the most rain (although this is California so there will still be plenty of dry, beautiful days). Since winter is the least crowded, it is the most affordable time to visit Napa with many hotels, resorts and spas advertising special packages and discounts off their regular rates.

How much time should I spend in Napa?

Set aside three to four days for your Napa Valley itinerary. This allows enough time to visit your top wineries and restaurants, plus time for other activities like spa treatments, hiking, lounging by the pool or riding the wine train.

A cyclist pedals up a hill and looks out over the hillside below him on a sunny day

What are the top things to do in Napa Valley?

Most people come to Napa to visit wineries – more on that later – but don’t overlook Napa’s exceptional culinary, wellness and recreation opportunities.

You can get filthy (in the best possible way) at the north end of the county in Calistoga. Calistoga is recognized around the world for mud made with a mixture of mineral-packed volcanic soil and water drawn from local hot springs. The two most common treatments involve painting it on your body or soaking in a tub of warm, nurturing mud. At least seven spas offer Calistoga mud experiences including the luxurious Spa Talisa at the Four Seasons Resort and Residences and the do-it-yourself mud bar at MoonAcre Spa and Baths .

Calistoga is also home to two of Napa Valley’s most unique natural attractions. The Old Faithful Geyser is a smaller, but still impressive version of Yellowstone’s most famous jet spout . In Calistoga, Old Faithful shoots hot water 30–80ft towards the sky every 10 to 20 minutes. Just outside of Calistoga at the Napa/Sonoma border, a three million-year-old petrified forest with 1.5 miles of hiking trails provides a fascinating glimpse at geological history.

No trip to the valley would be complete without a trip to downtown Napa’s Oxbow Public Market ,  a 40,000-sq-ft marketplace packed with locally sourced culinary delights. From California-grown olive oil at the Olive Press to artisan cheeses at the Oxbow Cheese and Wine Merchant , this is the place to stock up for a picnic or edible souvenirs. You’ll also find a bookstore, distillery, bakeries and restaurants. After you’ve finished browsing, find a seat on the riverfront deck out back to sample fresh oysters on the half shell from Hog Island Oyster Bar .

With menus centered around locally-grown ingredients, Napa is almost as famous for fine dining as it is for wine. Food this fresh is revelatory. A dish, such as fermented soy dip served with raw vegetables pulled from the ground at the Charter Oak , will ruin you forever for grocery store veggies. Other bucket-list dining experiences include the six-course prix-fixe chef’s tasting menu at La Toque , the daily tasting menu at the French Laundry , and Kenzo Napa , where seafood is flown in daily from the finest fish market in Japan. Please note that reservations at these restaurants are coveted, and should be made as far as possible in advance.

Don’t let these vaunted names fool you into thinking you need to spend a fortune to get a good meal in Napa. The valley is filled with scores of reasonably-priced restaurants including Heritage Eats in Napa where you can feast on comfort foods like a smoked ham bowl or white cheddar mac and cheese for less than $15 a person. For tasting menus, Thomas Keller’s ad hoc offers a daily tasting menu currently priced at $56 a person for lunch or $69 a person at dinner. The  Gate House Restaurant at the Culinary Institute of America offers three courses prepared by student chefs for $35 at lunch or four courses for $45 at dinner (please note that restaurant prices are always subject to change).

For nightlife, the Blue Note Napa Jazz Club hosts an exciting mix of live performances ranging from household names to rising stars and tribute bands. It also holds the Summer Sessions outdoor concert series and the Black Radio Experience at the Meritage Resort and Spa . If you’re on the hunt for a good dive bar, Ana’s Cantina in downtown St Helena is the place for a game of pool, tunes from the jukebox and a stiff drink.

Other top activities in Napa Valley include hiking or biking the 12.5-mile  Napa Valley Vine Trail , which will eventually extend 47 miles from Vallejo to Calistoga.

Tips for visiting wineries in Napa

Gone are the days when you can walk into virtually any Napa Valley winery and ask for a tasting without an appointment (or even a fee). Although there are a few wineries like Hall Wines in St Helena, where walk-ins are welcome, reservations are required at most wineries in Napa Valley. This helps ensure the wineries have adequate time to guide you through your tasting. From the guest's perspective, appointments are helpful when it comes to budgeting, arranging transportation and planning your Napa itinerary.

The average wine tasting fee in Napa Valley is $40 per person but it isn’t unusual for prices to climb to $200 or even more. Most wineries have a menu of tasting options, with standard tastings at the low end and premium experiences with food pairings, library wines, or guided tours commanding a higher price. Please note that the tip is not included in the tasting price so it will need to be factored into your budget.

Expect to spend at least 90 minutes at each winery (often longer for premium experiences). For this reason, it’s best to stick to no more than two or three tasting room visits a day. We recommend clustering each day’s reservations in the same area so you won’t have to rush between wineries. For instance, in the Stag’s Leap District, Cliff Lede Vineyards and Baldacci Family Vineyards are only a mile apart. Cliff Lede’s Backstage Lounge Tasting Room Experience offers an elevated tasting with premium wines in a room filled with rotating art and rare rock memorabilia. At Baldacci, the Cave Tour and Tasting Experience includes a cave tour and barrel tasting followed by a seated tasting paired with seasonal appetizers.

In the Rutherford area, Sullivan Winery is only half a mile from the Prisoner Wine Company . At Sullivan, the Merlot Mastery Tasting starts with a tour of the gardens and grounds before moving on to a seated tasting with two flights of its prized merlot accompanied by light bites. At Prisoner, you’ll find many culinary pairings including the Wine and Dim Sum Experience.

Attire is wine country casual. A pair of nice jeans, golf shirts, sundresses or casual blouses are the norm in Napa Valley. Do wear comfortable shoes, especially if you plan to walk through the vineyards or participate in a tour.

Expert tip: The Covet Pass offers complimentary tastings at seven Napa wineries and seven Sonoma wineries, plus additional discounts for a one-time fee of $150.

How to get around in Napa without a car

Napa Valley is 30 miles long and stretches at most 5 miles wide. In this sense, Napa is small and easy to navigate, but driving can be tricky in a destination centered around wine. Luckily, if you don’t have a designated driver there are several ways to get around Napa without a car.

The Napa Valley Wine Train offers several tasting journeys including a 36-mile roundtrip through gorgeous scenery to disembark for seated tastings at Charles Krug Winery and V. Sattui Winery . A four-course lunch is served onboard. You can also hitch a ride to three tasting rooms in an open-air San Francisco cable car on the Napa Valley Wine Trolley .

Many tour operators provide transportation to Napa wineries. Several, like Napa Valley Wine Country Tours , offer a choice between public group tours, which are less expensive, or private tours with a customized itinerary.

If you prefer to get around by foot, base yourself in the cities of Napa or Yountville. Napa has more than 50 downtown tasting rooms and there are 14 walkable tasting rooms in downtown Yountville.

Where to stay

If there was ever a place to treat yourself to a nice hotel, it’s Napa Valley. The region is home to some of the best hotels in the country, with grounds and accommodations so astonishingly beautiful you might not want to leave to go wine tasting (but definitely leave to go wine tasting). If you’re in the position to splurge our top picks are:

The Poetry Inn is an exclusive property with only five guest rooms and a small, on-site spa. The all-suite hotel is the epitome of privacy and luxury with huge guest rooms featuring private sitting areas, outdoor patios, and indoor and outdoor showers with stunning hillside or vineyard views. A gourmet multicourse breakfast is included with each stay. Poetry Inn is the only hotel in the Stag Leap district.

Meadowood Napa Valley in St Helena is set on a magnificent 250-acre estate with mature, oaks and native plants surrounding 36 suites and guest rooms with soaking tubs and private outdoor sitting areas. Hiking trails, tennis courts, swimming pools, a Wine Center and a tranquil spa ensure you’ll never lack activities during your stay.

Carneros Resort and Spa offers standalone cottages and homes surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards in Napa. Amenities include a luxurious onsite spa, two swimming pools, pickle ball courts with an adjacent Veuve Clicquot Champagne Bar and Lounge, a complimentary buffet breakfast, and access to Cadillac Luxury Vehicles during your stay.

If a mid-range hotel is better suited for your budget we recommend the Meritage Resort and Spa or Silverado Resort . The Meritage offers perks like a complimentary shuttle service to downtown Napa and a verdant lawn surrounded by tasting rooms and an upscale market. At the Silverado Resort, amenities include golf courses, bocce ball courts, a pool and a fitness center.

The most affordable lodging options in Napa Valley are generally found in American Canyon, which offers several reliable, reasonably-priced chains such as the DoubleTree by Hilton Napa Valley American Canyon and Holiday Inn Express and Suites Napa Valley American Canyon .

The green vines of a vineyard stretch down a hill during summer months

My favorite thing to do in Napa

When I come to Napa I love to take a class to enhance my appreciation of food and wine or learn a fun, new skill. I’ve never been anywhere else where classes are so varied and accessible, so I take advantage whenever I can. Often, these classes are offered directly through my hotel. The Wine Center at Meadowood Napa Valley runs classes ranging from introductory tutorials on Napa wine to advanced courses on subjects like the history of the wine label. Carneros Resort and Spa has a dazzling array of daily classes focusing on everything from sabering champagne bottles to pickleball.

The Culinary Institute of America is my hands-down choice for cooking classes with options for group or private instruction. I’ve also found classes offered at Napa Valley wineries. Bouchaine Vineyards regularly hosts an exciting roster of sessions on topics like pairing wine and cheese, blending wine and even falconry.

How much do you need to budget for a trip to Napa?

The amount you’ll need to spend on a trip to Napa is highly variable depending on your itinerary and even the season you choose to visit. Although it is generally considered a luxury destination, you can still plan an affordable trip to Napa with the tips and tricks in this first-timer’s guide. The numbers below are not definitive but will provide a general idea of how much it costs for budget-conscious, midrange, and luxury travelers to visit Napa.

  • Hotel room for two: $100–1200 a night
  • Rental home/Airbnb for two: $200–1000 a night
  • Wine tasting fees: $25–250 per person at each winery (not including tip)
  • Lunch for two: $30–100 per person

The Perfect Napa Valley Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

  • by JESS LANDER

One hour north of San Francisco, all of life’s greatest indulgences—wine, food, relaxation, and adventure—can be experienced all at once in Napa Valley , one of the top Wine Country destinations in the world.

Thirty miles long and five miles wide, this small slice of heaven is home to more than 500 wineries throughout a collection of six quaint towns: Napa, Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena, and Calistoga. Each has its own personality and places to discover; from Napa’s urban wine trail to Yountville’s renowned dining scene to Calistoga’s detoxifying hot springs , there’s something for every kind of traveler, whether you’re a oenophile, foodie, adventurist, or self-care aficionado.

There’s also no bad time to visit Napa Valley . While September and October are the busiest and warmest months, offering the chance to experience the annual grape harvest in action, the winter months have their own appeal. It’s quiet, uncrowded, and not too chilly, with temperatures mostly in the 50s and 60s. Plus, many hotels offer hard-to-beat off-season rates. Your best chance of rain is in the spring, but the blooming fields of bright, yellow mustard also make it one of the most Instagram-worthy seasons to plan a trip.

Whenever you do decide to pack your bags and pay Napa Valley a visit, we’ve put together the perfect itinerary for the first time visitor, covering all of the “must do’s” over a long weekend trip.

Visit a Historic Winery

Louis M. Martini Winery

Reserve a hotel room in Napa so that you can be within walking distance (or just a short drive) to downtown’s many restaurants, bars, and tasting rooms. The urban chic Andaz Napa is at the heart of downtown Napa activity, where loft-style rooms are both stylish and inviting, while Milliken Creek ’s peaceful riverfront location offers guests a quieter escape just a few minutes from the downtown scene.

Milliken Creek Inn in Napa, CA

For breakfast , head to chef Thomas Keller’s famous Bouchon Bakery in Yountville for pastries and espresso. Most likely there will be a line out the door, but it moves quickly. If you want to double down, you can head to Mini Model across the street. This is a smaller location of the locally-acclaimed Model Bakery . Get the English muffin. It’s so good that Oprah Winfrey actually has them flown straight to her front door. For a more elegant brunch option, head to RH Yountville , where dishes like avocado toast on charred sourdough and black forest bacon are perfectly paired with their signature RH mimosa.

Visit a Boutique Winery

Cliff Lede

Because you visited some of the oldest, largest, and most popular wineries on Day 1, make an appointment at a boutique or family-owned winery next and compare experiences. A boutique winery can mean several things: a more personalized experience (sometimes with the winemaker or owner), less of a crowd, and super primo wines (especially Cabernet Sauvignon, which Napa Valley is best known for). Some of our favorite family-owned and/or boutique wineries to visit UpValley are Goosecross Cellars , Jessup Cellars , and Cliff Lede Vineyards in Yountville, Clif Family Winery and Trinchero in St. Helena, and Staglin Family Vineyard in Rutherford.

outdoor lounge at Sequoia Grove Winery

Also in Rutherford is the family-owned Sequoia Grove Winery , where a variety of tasting experiences await. Add a seasonal cheese and charcuterie plate to your tasting if you need a snack to tide you over until lunch.

Lunch in St. Helena

Clif Family Winery

For the better part of the afternoon, drive the eight miles from St. Helena to Calistoga for some spa time. This quirky, little town is best known for its healing mineral waters from natural hot springs, plus mud baths that’ll make your skin as smooth as a newborn. Make an appointment for a spa treatment ahead of time; there are so many local spas to choose from, from luxe resorts like Indian Springs and Solage to hip boutique gems like Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs to more intimate and classically restorative escapes at Golden Haven Hot Springs .

If you have some time after, take a stroll down Calistoga’s main drag Lincoln Avenue and pop into CAMi Art + Wine for a tasting while admiring the contemporary art, or grab a pint at the Calistoga Inn Restaurant & Brewery .

When to visit Napa Valley

Though Napa Valley is a year-round destination, the most popular time to visit Napa Valley is during the grape harvest season of August-October.

This is when you’ll find grape stomps, harvest dinners, and harvest parties being held.

Along with harvest season drawing peak crowds, you’ll also find higher prices on just about everything, including accommodations, however.

March-May is another popular time to visit Napa Valley as the region is in full bloom and the heavy crowds have yet to arrive.

In the winter months of December-February, prices are affordable and there are a lot fewer crowds, but temperatures are chilly with highs in the mid-50s – and low mid-30s.

Learn about what to wear in Napa Valley when visiting during any season, here!

My first visit to Napa Valley was during the first week of November. I found this to be a wonderful time to visit as fall colors were prevalent and crowds were minimal. In addition, overhead heaters are always available on outdoor patios, so the atmosphere was cozy and it never felt too cold.

The Vintage House, Yountville, California

Napa Valley Girls’ Trip: Where we stayed

Though there are several amazing options on where to stay in Napa Valley , we chose to stay at the Vintage House of The Estate Yountville .

Located in the middle of the charming town of Yountville, Vintage House is a boutique hotel with an elegant, modern farmhouse feel and bungalow-style accommodations.

It is located steps away from several tasting rooms, boutique shops, and Michelin-rated restaurants, The French Laundry and Bouchon Bistro.

We loved it there!

Napa Valley Girls’ Trip: How to get around

As mentioned, Napa Valley is made up of a collection of towns, not just one single place.

Together, the entire Napa Valley is 30 miles long and 5 miles wide.

Because of its size, Napa Valley is not considered to be a ‘walkable destination’ and some form of transportation is needed in order to experience the area.

In addition, having a designated (sober) driver is necessary if you’ll be drinking wine – so many people explore alternatives to personal transportation.

Options for transportation around Napa Valley include:

  • Renting a car (someone in your group being a designated driver)
  • Hiring a private driver – this is very common here
  • Taking a guided your
  • Riding the vintage Napa Valley Wine Train
  • Rideshare companies such as Uber or Lyft
  • Renting bikes and biking to the wineries

Napa Valley Girl’s Trip Itinerary

Here’s our ultimate 3-day Napa itinerary that can be customized with the restaurants, wineries, and activities of your choice.

Each of our day’s itineraries is followed by an overview of additional options for wineries, restaurants, and things to do in Napa besides wine tasting .

Day 1: Napa Girls’ Trip

  • Spend the day in Napa and the Silverado Trail
  • Breakfast at Monday Bakery (Napa location)
  • 8 AM Spa treatment at Spa Terra (located inside an underground Estate Cave)
  • 10 AM tasting reservation at Domaine Carneros

  • Explore the Silverado Trail

Be sure to research the wineries you want to visit and make reservations in advance as all wineries require reservations for tastings and tours.

You’ll also want to make restaurant reservations in advance.

Try a local cafe

Start your trip off right by fueling up for a day of exploration.

Napa Valley is filled with adorable local cafes and bakeries where you can have a quick bite to eat.

Enjoy a cappuccino and croissant on a sunny patio near your accommodations, or grab an Americano to go and grab some fresh fruit from a market or farm stand.

Cute cafes in and around Napa include:

  • Monday Bakery (Downtown Napa) – 1412 2nd St
  • Hudson Greens and Goods (Downtown Napa) – 610 First Street, Oxbow Public Market
  • Model Bakery (Downtown Napa & St. Helena ) – 644 1st St, or 1357 Main St

Begin at the spa

Before your busy day of exploration and tastings, unwind at one of Napa Valley’s wonderful spas.

A relaxing massage is the perfect addition to your Napa Valley girls’ trip!

Napa Valley spas we recommend:

  • Spa Terra – 875 Bordeaux Way, Napa
  • Halehouse Spa at Stanly Ranch – 200 Stanly Crossroad, Napa
  • The Spa at Meadowood Napa Valley –  900 Meadowood Ln, St Helena
  • Spa Talisa at Four Seasons – 400 Silverado Trail N, Calistoga
  • Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs – 1507 Lincoln Ave, Calistoga

Napa girl's trip ideas

Go wine tasting at Domaine Carneros

We all know that you’re here for the wine!

For your first wine tasting, we suggest Domaine Carneros for sparkling wine and pinot noir.

The winery is located in a stunning château with an outdoor terrace overlooking the rolling hills of Carneros.

The combination of scenery and delicious wine is what Napa Valley is all about.

Additional planning tip: Tasting reservations are required and available between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Lunch at Oxbow Public Market

Once you’ve worked up an appetite at Domaine Carneros, head to downtown Napa to explore Oxbow Public Market and grab some lunch.

This market is a Napa staple, with global food offerings, fresh produce, and even more wine!

There are so many different options for lunch here, so everyone in your group can find their ideal meal.

Tasty options at Oxbow Public Market:

  • Hog Island Oyster Co. – Fresh oyster bar.
  • C Casa – Mexican eats and cocktails (my personal favorite)
  • Oxbow Cheese & Wine Merchant – A wide variety of cheese and wine.
  • Model Bakery – Pastries, sandwiches, THE BEST English muffins, and more.
  • Ritual Coffee – Coffee, salads, sandwiches, and bakery items.

Wine tasting in Napa Valley

Explore the Silverado Trail (or take a tour!)

Time to do more tasting on your Napa Valley girls’ trip!

One of the best ways to begin exploring Napa Valley is to take a drive along Silverado Trail .

It has the best views of the vineyards and several wineries for you to stop along the way!

If you plan on taking part in a few tastings and do not have a designated (sober) driver, we recommend taking a tour like the Napa Valley wine train for safe travels.

Amazing wineries on the Silverado Trail include:

  • Duckhorn Vineyards – 1000 Lodi Ln, St. Helena
  • Rutherford Hill Winery – 200 Rutherford Hill Road, Rutherford
  • Joseph Phelps Vineyard – 200 Taplin Road, St. Helena
  • Chimney Rock Winery – 5350 Silverado Trail, Napa
  • Stags Leap Wine Cellars – 5766 Silverado Trail, Napa
  • Pine Ridge Vineyards – 5901 Silverado Trail, Napa

End your day with dinner and the waterfront

Napa is well-known for its varied and delicious eateries.

Enjoy steak and seafood at PRESS (located in St. Helena), Italian food at Oenotri, or French food at Angele, located on the Napa Riverfront.

Napa’s Riverfront is complete with shops, sparkling lights, and wine bars.

Enjoy a final glass of wine or simply take in the beautiful night.

Day 2: Napa Girls’ Trip

  • Spend the day in St. Helena and Calistoga (the northern part of Napa Valley)
  • Breakfast at Model Bakery in St. Helena
  • 10 AM tasting reservation Castello di Amorosa
  • Check out the Old Faithful Geyser of California in Calistoga
  • Consider bypassing a spa treatment on Day 1 and booking a spa treatment and hot spring/mineral pool session in Calistoga ( see more below ) – OR –
  • Rent bikes and explore Calistoga’s wineries
  • 7 PM dinner reservations at PRESS in St. Helena

Discover the ultimate 3-day Napa itinerary for a Napa Valley girls' trip from top U.S. family travel blog, Travel With A Plan!

Visit Castello di Amorosa in St. Helena

On your 45-minute drive from Napa to Calistoga, be sure to stop in St. Helena – home to the incredible medieval-style castle winery, Castello di Amorosa.

Book a guided tour and wine tasting in this unique setting.

St Helena is always a fun town to explore, filled with art galleries and fun shops.

Jaunt through the streets and purchase some souvenirs from the local artisans.

Other great wineries in St. Helena include:

  • Charles Krug – 2800 Main St, St. Helena
  • V.Sattui – 1111 White Ln, St. Helena
  • Beringer Vineyards – 2000 Main St, St. Helena
  • Del Dotto Estate – 1445 St. Helena Highway S., St. Helena

Spend the day in Calistoga

Calistoga, California is known for its hot springs, mud baths, and mineral pools and is the perfect addition to your Napa Valley girls’ trip!

Explore the town, visit the Old Faithful Geyser of California, and plan a relaxing dip in a hot spring or mineral pool.

(Take note that Calistoga’s many hot springs and mineral pools do require that you’ve also either booked a spa treatment or are an overnight guest in order to use a resort’s pools.)

For this reason, we did not get to experience this, but I would make plans to go to a hot spring or mineral pool next time.

Additional planning tip: If you’re not renting a car, a typical Uber from Napa to Calistoga is between $40-$50.

View of a vineyard in the fall

Bike ride and picnic lunch

To take on the Calistoga vineyards, we suggest renting bikes from Calistoga Bikeshop as the views are best seen at your own pace.

Stop by a winery and share a bottle of cabernet sauvignon and a picnic in the vineyard.

Consider booking the self-guided Cool Wine Tour through the Bikeshop, where they’ll book the tastings and customize a route for you!

Calistoga wineries include:

  • Chateau Montelena Winery – 1429 Tubbs Lane, Calistoga
  • Clos Pegase Winery & Tasting Room – 1060 Dunaweal Ln, Calistoga
  • Tank Garage Winery – 1020 Foothill Blvd, Calistoga
  • Frank Family Vineyards – 1091 Larkmead Ln, Calistoga
  • Girard Winery Calistoga – 1077 Dunaweal Ln, Calistoga
  • Brian Arden Wines – 331 Silverado Trail N, Calistoga
  • Tamber Bey Vineyards – 1251 Tubbs Ln, Calistoga

Day 3: Napa Valley Girls’ Trip

  • Spend the day in and around Yountville
  • Take a morning hot air balloon ride ( expensive, but worth it )
  • 11 AM brunch reservations at RH Yountville
  • Go shopping and/or to the tasting rooms of your choice
  • Hit the pool
  • 7 PM dinner reservations at The French Laundry

Napa girls' trip itinerary: Go for a hot air balloon ride

Take a hot air balloon ride

Early risers will adore a magical hot air balloon ride over the Napa Valley vineyards.

Napa Valley Aloft offers hot air balloon rides taking off from Yountville and North Napa Valley.

You can even add champagne and a post-flight breakfast to your package.

This is the absolute best vantage point to see the beauty of Napa Valley in its entirety.

Discover the ultimate 3-day Napa itinerary for a Napa Valley girls' trip from top U.S. family travel blog, Travel With A Plan!

Brunch time!

After an early balloon ride in Yountville, enjoy brunch at RH Yountville !

You’ll love the ambiance at RH Yountville which is complete with gorgeous chandeliers, trickling fountains, and heritage olive trees.

Other popular brunch spots in Napa Valley include Long Meadow Ranch (St. Helena), Boon Fly Cafe (Napa), and Grace’s Table (Napa).

This is the perfect time to plot the rest of your day, filling in any last activities you’ve been dying to try!

Shopping in Yountville

Spend the afternoon in Yountville

Your girl’s weekend is coming to an end, but there’s still time to fit in some more fun!

Wander the streets of Yountville in search of boutique shopping, quaint tasting rooms, and sweet treats (pick up chocolates to-go at Kollar Chocolates!).

Check out Priest Ranch tasting room, Handwritten Wines, and Jessup Cellars tasting room, which are all within walking distance of one another.

Take a break from wining and dining and ride the free Yountville Trolley to the  Napa Valley Museum – or simply spend the rest of the afternoon at your hotel pool.

Try one of Napa’s Michelin-star restaurants

A girl’s trip to wine country just wouldn’t be complete without pairing a Michelin-star meal with the finest Napa Valley wine.

Tonight, pull out all the stops with a fine-dining experience at one of Napa’s most popular Michelin-star restaurants, The French Laundry .

The French Laundry has indoor and outdoor seating (reservations required) and offers both a Chef’s Tasting Menu and a separate Tasting of Vegetables menu that varies by the day.

The French Laundry has a “culinary gardener” on staff whose job is to tend to the 3.5-acre garden across the street from the restaurant.

The garden serves as their main source of produce for the restaurant, and the gardener and chefs always collaborate before harvesting for each evening’s meal.

Discover the ultimate 3-day Napa itinerary for a Napa Valley girls' trip from top U.S. family travel blog, Travel With A Plan!

Other Michelin-starred restaurants in California wine country:

  • Auberge du Soleil (Rutherford) – Californian cuisine with mountain and vineyard views.
  • La Toque (Central Napa) – Contemporary with a full vegetarian tasting menu.
  • Single Thread (Healdsburg) – Seasonal, contemporary menu with farm-grown produce.
  • Kenzo (Napa) – Japanese with an incredible sake variety and minimal, 25-seat dining room.

Additional planning tip: All fine-dining experiences should be booked well in advance.

Napa Valley Girl’s Trip: Conclusion

We hope you’ve found this 3-day Napa Valley itinerary helpful in planning your Napa Valley girls’ trip!

While undoubtedly expensive, the ease of getting from point A to point B and the assurance of not missing a reservation make it well worth the investment. </p>

<p>After checking out, take stock of how much time you have before needing to be home or back at SFO. If you’re traveling by air, you’ll make your way down Highway 29 back toward the airport. On your way, stop back in Yountville for a couple bites. First, step into <a href="https://www.thomaskeller.com/bouchonbakeryyountville">Bouchon Bakery</a>, an iconic Thomas Keller creation known for its artisanal breads and traditional French desserts (the ham, egg, and cheese danish, chocolate croissant, and iced mocha are all a delight). After checking out, take stock of how much time you have before needing to be home or back at SFO. If you’re traveling by air, you’ll make your way down Highway 29 back toward the airport. On your way, stop back in Yountville for a couple bites. First, step into Bouchon Bakery , an iconic Thomas Keller creation known for its artisanal breads and traditional French desserts (the ham, egg, and cheese danish, chocolate croissant, and iced mocha are all a delight). Then, venture over to Mini Model Bakery , a hole-in-the-wall home to Oprah’s favorite English muffins. Even if you simply order a muffin with butter and strawberry jam, it will undoubtedly be the best you’ve ever had.
