Watch Neil Young play rarities as first tour in four years begins

The solo acoustic west coast tour of the US will feature mostly songs Young has never performed live before

Neil Young

Neil Young kicked off his first tour in four years on Friday (June 30) – watch him play a host of rarities at the Los Angeles gig below.

As announced last month, Young will play a series of solo acoustic dates on the west coast this summer in his first run of headline gigs since pre-pandemic.

Upon the announcement, he also revealed that he would be filling the setlists with mostly songs he has never performed live.

True to form, his first show of four at Los Angeles’ John Anson Ford venue on Friday featured a host of deep cuts and rarities, including the first performance of ‘If You Got Love’ since 1986 and the first performance of Neil Young & Crazy Horse track ‘Prime Of Life’ since 1994.

He also gave a full live debut to 1994 track ‘A Dream That Can Last’.

See footage from the gig and the full setlist below.

Earlier this year,  Young made his live comeback at a march and rally in support of the United For Old Growth campaign , which is looking to stop the Canadian government from allowing logging companies from destroying old-growth forests.

Since then, he has  reunited with Stephen Stills at a show in Los Angeles in April  and  performed at Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday party  alongside  Snoop Dogg ,  Beck  and more.

Since  COVID-19  was declared a pandemic in early 2020, Young said  he wouldn’t tour until the virus was “beat”  and  called on promoters to cancel “super-spreader” gigs .

See the remaining dates of Young’s comeback tour below. Elsewhere, he has announced that he will finally release his legendary ‘lost’ album ‘Chrome Dreams’ this summer.

Neil Young is set to go on his first solo tour since pre-pandemic times, hitting intimate theaters across the West Coast with a setlist of songs he’s never played live. Dates and venues for the special showings have not yet been revealed — and are expected to be officially announced June 9 — but the 77-year-old shared other details on a Zoom for paid Patron subscribers to the Neil Young Archives.

Popular on Variety

Fans can still expect to hear Young play his most beloved, well-known hits though he estimates that 80% of the performance will be dedicated to his die-hard fans. “They’re not new songs,” he said. “They’re old songs. But I wake up with them in my head every morning. They are songs that apply to my life right now and apply to everyone’s lives in this era that we’re in. Some of them were written 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago, but never really played live.”

The tour is said to kickstart with a four or five-night residency at a “tiny, little unknown theater that’s close to one of the most well-known theaters in the world” on the West Coast, with the official locations to be confirmed tomorrow.

Young’s last public performance before this year was at Farm Aid in September 2019. After the pandemic halted all live performances, the singer-songwriter did not budge over safety concerns regarding the virus and actively fought against misinformation and inaccuracies surrounding vaccinations — even going so far as having his music removed from Spotify in a boycott against Joe Rogan’s podcast .

Neil Young to Perform Lost ‘Cortez The Killer’ Verses on Summer Tour With Crazy Horse

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

When Neil Young hits the road this summer with Crazy Horse, he’s planning on performing “Cortez The Killer” with verses that have been missing from the song for 50 years. “Just a couple of days ago, I found the other verses,” Young told fans Monday afternoon during a Zoom with paid subscribers to the Neil Young Archives . “Just the lyrics…We may have those lost lyrics in the show, which will be fun for me.”

When the band cut the song originally in a California house near Zuma Beach, the power to the recording console died in the middle of the take, though the band was completely oblivious. They felt it was a prefect performance. “Don’t shoot yourselves,” producer David Briggs told them when they came out of the studio. “But the power went off, and we missed one verse.” Briggs told them which verse they had lost. “I never liked that one anyway,” Young replied.

In a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone , Crazy Horse guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro recalled cutting “Cortez The Killer” shortly after he joined the band. “It was a sunny day at Zuma Beach, and this guy came by, and I smoked angel dust with him,” he said. “And then Neil came up and said, ‘Let’s try this song,’ We never played it, and I was like, ‘Oh, shit.’ If you listen to the first recording, I thought the second chord was the first chord. Neil was emphasizing the first one, I was emphasizing the second one. [Laughs]. But you know, it goes around in a circle, so it doesn’t really matter too much.”

After Covid hit in 2019, Young took a break from the road for three years. When he emerged last summer for a solo tour, he played only outdoor venues. He’s playing 24 shows with Crazy Horse over the next few months, and they’re all outdoors as well. “We gotta be careful,” Young said on the fan Zoom. “I don’t know the stats on it, but I imagine if you look at a regular group of 15,000 or 20,000 people, just randomly from around the world, and then look at 15,000 or 20,000 people that all went to a show, and how many of them got Covid, I think you’d found people that went to a show inside have a lot more of a chance of getting sick. I don’t really need to do that. Willie Nelson told me he’s only playing outside now. I felt that was a good idea, so that’s what I’m doing.”

Young largely dodged questions about what songs he plans on playing this summer with Crazy Horse, though he noted that he enjoyed playing Tonight’s The Night, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere , and Ragged Glory at intimate club gigs late last year. “The songs that the Horse plays are so simple you can go almost anywhere with them,” he said. “A lot of them only have two or three chords in them, and they just repeat. There’s another song that has four chords in it. We’re going to try that. The Horse has [rarely] played ‘I’m The Ocean’ before. I think we’re going do that one. But we should be able to jam for a long time on all that stuff. I’m looking forward to that.”

Young also gave an update on the upcoming Archives III box set. “It’s different from the other two,” he said. “It has a different approach. There’s more audio vérité in it. We have real-time things happening that people haven’t heard. There’s one scene is myself and Nicolette [Larson], Linda [Ronstadt], and [David] Briggs. We’re sitting around a table, and I’m singing all the songs that are on the next record to them for the first time. And then they start singing along. It’s just a live thing of people sitting around a table. I think it’s very interesting to hear them…There’s really a really cool film in there called Across The Water that is a great Crazy Horse film. It’s really big. It’s bigger than the other volumes.”

According to current plans, Volume III will cover a 30-year time span. Volume IV will do the same. “Rather than keep putting out volumes that are smaller,” he said. “We’re going to put out IV and that’ll be it. We’re starting on the last one. It’s a monumental task.”

Neil Young Rolls At Rarities At First Concert Tour Since 2019

by Paul Cashmere on July 2, 2023

Neil Young has performed a treasure trove of rarities at the first show of his first concert tour since 2019 and played many songs never performed live before.

Young performed at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles on Friday, 30 June, 2023. It is his Coastal Tour 2023, visiting only US west coast venues.

Making its first appearance at a Neil Young show was ‘A Dream That Can Last’ from 1994’s ‘Sleeps With Angels’. Young has rarely visited the ‘Sleeps With Angels’ album because of its personal nature. The title track was written about the death of Kurt Cobain who was found with a suicide note quoting the Young ‘Hey Hey My My’ lyric “It’s better to burn out than to fade away”. ‘Prime of Life’ and ‘My Heart’ were also played. Young had only performed ‘Prime of Life’ three times before and ‘My Heart’ five times and then only in 1994 when the album was released.

Two songs from 1995’s ‘Mirrorball’, Neil’s album with Pearl Jam as his backing band, were also played. ‘Song X’ was last played in 1995, ‘I’m the Ocean’ in 1997.

‘Homefires’ is another rarity and has been played 19 times but remained unreleased until the Archives Volume II box of 2020.

‘If You Got Love’ is another unreleased song although it was listed but does not appear on the 1983 album ‘Trans’. Young last performed the song in 1986.

‘When I Hold You In My Arms’ from the album with Booker T & The MG’s ‘Are You Passionate?’ was played for the first time since 2001.

Neil Young also showcased his most two recent studio albums ‘’Barn’ (2021) and ‘World Record’ (2022) with a song each both making their live debut ‘Don’t Forget Love’ and ‘Love Earth’.

This is not a show for casual fans who only know Young’s radio songs. If you were that person in this room, who would have known maybe two or three songs (Ohio, Heart of Gold and possibly Four Strong Winds). For Neil Young fans this was a dream setlist.

Neil Young Announces First Tour Since 2019

By Evan Minsker

Neil Young

Neil Young has announced a tour—his first since 2019 . Earlier this week, Young told paid subscribers of Neil Young Archives that the solo acoustic shows will feature songs that he’s never performed live before. Check out the tour dates, featuring special guest Chris Pierce, below.

“I don’t want to come back and do the same songs again,” Young said (according to Rolling Stone ). “I’ll feel like I was on some sort of carnival ride. I’d rather be doing these others songs I haven’t done…. I won’t have to compare how I’m doing ‘Heart of Gold’ to [how I played it in] 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020.”

Among the songs Young mentioned as part of the new setlist are the Pearl Jam collaboration “Song X” from 1995’s Mirror Ball , “Prime of Life” from 1994’s Sleeps With Angels , and the Trans outtake “If You Got Love.”

Young began performing at one-off appearances earlier this year, including a rally for old-growth trees and at a Willie Nelson tribute show. In 2021 and 2022 , he pulled out of Farm Aid due to concerns over the pandemic . “I am not ready for that yet. I don’t think it is safe in the pandemic,” he wrote, adding, “I miss it very much.”

In March, Young wrote a post critical of Ticketmaster and the contemporary touring industry. “It’s over. The old days are gone,” the musician wrote. “I get letters blaming me for $3,000.00 tickets for a benefit I am doing. That money does not go to me or the benefit. Artists have to worry about ripped off fans blaming them for Ticketmaster add-ons and scalpers. Concert tours are no longer fun. Concert tours not what they were.”

Young’s criticism of Ticketmaster followed his recent boycott of Spotify and his apparent subtweet of Beck’s NFL-sponsored (and Grammy-nominated ) cover of “ Old Man .”
