A budget trip to Vaishno Devi from New Delhi

Photo of Sushant S Agarwal

In July 2021, I had planned a short yet budget visit to Vaishno Devi shrine for the month of August. Initially it was a solo trip as I wanted to explore that how one can visit the shrine in lowest budget possible, but later I asked my father to join me.

Since, I went to Vaishno Devi during a long weekend, I witnessed a huge crowd, right from Katra to Bhawan.

So how I planned my trip?

Firstly I figured out the options that I have to make my trip a low budget trip. I planned to travel in sleeper class train, decided to stay in dormitories instead of hotel.

I booked 02265 Jammu Duronto Express which departs at 10:20 pm from Delhi Sarai Rohilla and reach Jammu at 7:15 am – approx. 9 hours journey.

You may also like to read: Mata Vaishno Devi trek ,  hill stations near Delhi

There are other cheap options also available like trains with chair class, or the trains with much longer routes.

I have always loved train journeys.

DAY 1 (28th August 2021)

Upon reaching Jammu at 7 AM, we had a cup of tea and boarded bus to Katra.

Jammu Bus Stand

Tip: Always carry a postpaid sim card or purchase a new number when you reach J&K since prepaid numbers of outside J&K won’t work there.

The bus fare ranges from ₹70 to ₹120, depending on the type of service (AC/ Non AC/ Government). We took a private Non AC bus whose fare was ₹100 per person and it took 1.5 hours from Jammu to reach Katra. The train takes 2-3 hours.

Bus journey through the mountains has its own fun. We were mesmerised by that first glimpse of Trikuta Parvat when we were about to reach Katra.

A view of Trikuta Parvat (on the way to Katra)

By 9:30 AM we were in Katra. We had our breakfast and then took an Auto ₹100 to reach Trikuta Bhawan.

Instead of staying in a hotel, I chose to spend my time in Vaishno Devi Shrine Board dormitory. I had booked two AC beds at Trikuta Bhawan, Katra through the official website https://www.maavaishnodevi.org/

The charges were ₹150 per bed and we stayed there till the evening on that day, since we had planned to start the trek in the evening, considering the heat during the day time.

If you are planning a budget trip, then I would highly recommend that you stay at Triukta Bhawan. Yes, you’ll be sharing rooms, washrooms with different people, you might also have hygiene issues, but you’ll be happy when you see that people from all walks of life come to stay there.

It is a four-storey building with a temple in its centre courtyard. It has also a shrine board authorized canteen where you can have Rajma chawal, Kadhi chawal, etc. at a very reasonable rate of ₹40 per plate. I can assure you that you’ll not be disappointed if you chose to stay here anytime. The check-in check-out time here is 10 AM.

Trikuta Bhawan also provides the facility of free cloak rooms only for people who have bookings there. So, we had our lunch, explored the market nearby and rested till the evening.

At 6:30 pm, we checked out from the dormitory with two backpacks and leaving our luggage in the cloak room. To reach the first checkpoint at Darshani Darwaza or Banganga, you need to hire an auto. The approx. fare is ₹150 for full auto, but of course, you can also go for a sharing auto, which will cost less.

Darshani Darwaza

There was a big queue at Darshani Darwaza and it took almost an hour to reach the checkpoint where your yatra parchi is checked.

Tip: Do not carry binoculars or you’ll have to keep it at a nearby cloak room and collect the same after returning back.

And now the 14 kilometre trek begins….the time was around 7:30 pm. Since my father was tired, we had to hire two ponies at ₹300 per horse upto Adhkuwari.

On the way to Adhkuwari

Tip: If you want to hire a pony, palki etc, always book the same through the prepaid counters to avoid being overcharged.

Tip: Keep water bottle and something light to eat handy during the trek. Also try keep your backpack light in weight. Do check weather conditions, and decide whether you should take raincoat or umbrella or not.

We reached Adhkuwari at around 8:45 pm. There we had our dinner in a dhaba. There are shrine board authorized food courts as well but due to reasonable prices, you'll always find it crowded.

After the dinner, we chose to stay in a dormitory again for the night and continue the trek early next morning.

Shailputri Bhawan

We booked two non ac beds at Shailpuri Bhawan in Adhkuwari at ₹120 per bed, which was again decent enough to stay with nice surroundings.

We also brought our parchis to enter Garbhjoon cave at Adhkuwari temple. Our group number was 590 and we had a 24-hour waiting before our turn comes.

DAY 2 (29th August 2021)

In the morning at 4:30 am, we continued our trek towards the bhawan, this time walking.

After reaching bhawan, first thing we had to do was to take bath. There’s a tradition that devotees who visit Vaishno Devi, must take a bath before entering the main temple. There’s a common bath room for men and a separate bathing area for women.

Tip: There are battery operated vehicles running from Adhkuwari to Bhawan. You may also book your tickets for the same on the spot.

After the bath, we needed to put our backpacks, including our shoes, leather belts, camera, mobile in free lockers. But we waited for atleast 2.5 hours in the queue before we could keep our things in locker. If you want, you can also purchase Bhaint Prasad from Shrine Board counters at different prices. Then, we joined another queue and waited for another 2.5 hours (approx.) to visit the main temple.

Tip: Do not wear shorts, wear jeans, trousers or pyjamas to visit the main temple.

There’s one another tradition that after paying your visit at Vaishno Devi temple, one also needs to pay a visit to Bhairo Mandir, located on the top of Trikuta Parvat, a two-kilometre steep trek from Bhawan. You can either choose to walk, hire a pony or purchase a ropeway ticket at ₹100 per person (return fare).

Queue for ropeway tickets

But even to purchase that ticket, we waited for another 2 hours, since it was a long queue and there was some VIP movement as well. It was my first time to Vaishno Devi since the ropeway system was launched, and therefore I wanted to go to Bhairon Mandir through ropeway only.

Ropeway to Bhairon Mandir

It was a two-minute ride and after visiting Bhairon Mandir, clicking some pictures, we came back down to Bhawan and began our trek back to Adhkuwari.

We stopped midway to have a tea and capture the beautiful Bhawan engulfed in the clouds.

We started descending at around 5 PM and reached Adhkuwari by 8 PM.

We had our dormitory booking at Shailputri Bhawan again (₹120 per bed). We stayed for the night and waited for turn to enter Garbhjoon cave.

Tip: You are not allowed to take carry anything in your pocket except some cash if you want while entering the Garbhjoon cave. It’s a very narrow cave and if you are scared of closed spaces, you must avoid the same.

DAY 3 (30th August 2021)

After the Garbhjoon, we returned back to our dormitory bed at around 3:45 AM and slept through the night.

Morning view from Shailputri Bhawan

We started our descent back to Katra at 8 am after having tea and some snacks.

While on our way to Katra, we rested at Bathing Ghat, Banganga and sat alongside the river, enjoying the music of nature.

Photo of A budget trip to Vaishno Devi from New Delhi by Sushant S Agarwal

We reached Katra at around 11 AM, thanks to the stairs on the way we took, that cut our time.

Photo of A budget trip to Vaishno Devi from New Delhi by Sushant S Agarwal

Tip: Using stairs might cut your trek time both while ascending and descending, but they may be very tiring compared to the regular route. Take regular breaks.

Since we were tired and our train to Delhi was at 7 PM on that day, we decided to book another two AC dormitory beds at Trikuta Bhawan, Katra.

We took J&K Government bus to Jammu. Its fare was ₹71 per person. You can also go for private buses.

We waited for a couple of hours at Jammu railway station to board our train.

Finally, we left Jammu to Delhi: 02266 Duronto Express (Fare ₹490 per head). We reached Delhi at 4 AM on 31st August 2021.

And this is how our short yet memorable trip was ended where we spent approx. ₹3000 per person including the train fares, local conveyance, dormitories, Prasad, snacks, lunch and dinners, provided that my budget increased due to some changes in the plan. You can plan your trip cheaper than this if you just stick to your original plan.

Futhermore, you can also book Atka Aarti for morning or evening at ₹2,000 per person which includes bhaint prasad, private bathing area and locker. You need to book these tickets atleast a month in advance.

new delhi to vaishno devi trip

In the olden days, the only route to Maa Vaishno Devi temple Cave was unpaved and consisted of a few flights of stairs. Hailed as the original route, it was filled with dirt and had sharp turns. But, after some time, it got a makeover and now you get to see paved and wide road covered with tiles. Now, it is covered with shed and has loudspeakers that play hymns of the Goddess at a subtle voice level.

As a matter of fact, you get carried away with the positive vibes in the air. Additionally, proper lighting facilities, water coolers, toilets throughout the track make it easy for you to trek. Comparatively easier than the previous one, the new route from Katra to Bhawan is 500 m shorter. Unlike the original track, no ponies are allowed here. Starting from Indraprastha Point just below Adhkuwari, the route ends just prior to Bhawan. Another key point to note about the alternative track is that electric vehicles run on it. Additionally, there are refreshment point, water coolers, a dosa point at Himkoti, toilets and much more en route.

Route 3: Tarakote Marg (Latest)

new delhi to vaishno devi trip

Your detailed Vaishno Devi tour guide makes you aware of a new route as well. Introduced recently, the latest route has cut short the 13 km trek to only 7 km. Passing atop a hillock overlooking Katra, the new route consists of medical units, eateries and no steps at all. Featuring non-skid tiles, the way allows pedestrian pilgrims to marvel at scenic views. Water ATMs across the route make the journey bereft of any hassle.

Choose any of the routes and you will get the first glimpse of Bhawan a few kilometers before you actually reach there. The first sight causes a sudden upsurge of energy and all the tiredness of the strenuous climb evaporates immediately. The fact that the last 1.5 km of the Yatra is either level or gently sloping downwards brings a big relief to those tired muscles.

  • Ban Ganga – A small flowing rivulet reminds you to keep going with high spirits. Another reason for the presence of this small stream here is associated with miracles of the Goddess. At this spot, the divine power quenched the thirst of Lord Hanuman by creating this rivulet with her arrow. • Ardhkuwari Darshan – Translating to an eternal virgin, Ardhkuwari is the place where Maa meditated and worshiped Lord Shiva for 9 months. She resided in a cave just as a child does in his mother’s womb for 9 months. Thus, the cave got the name as ‘Garbh Joon’. It was after then that Bharion came to know about the Devi who then made an opening in the cave with her trident. She further proceeded towards the Bhawan instantly. Despite that the cave here is very narrow, many followers still pay homage by traversing through it. Moreover, the place also marks the completion of half of the journey.

  • Hathi Matha – The trek after Adhkuwari is very steep upwards to move for about two and a half kilometers. The hill resembles the head of an elephant due to which the point is known as Hathi Matha. You may feel like panting here but instead of counting the hardships, counting the blessings will keep you going.
  • Himkoti – This place lies on the new track. Offering awe-inspiring views of the valley, Himkoti exudes a mysterious and ethereal charm.
  • Sanji Chhat – The highest point of the Vaishno Devi trek, Sanji Chhat is a beautiful small plateau.  The holy Bhawan is just 2.5 km away. The walk is really comfortable from here. Passengers undertaking Vaishno Devi Yatra by helicopter have to disembark at the helipad here. Besides, one can find shops, resting place, eatery and a charitable dispensary at this place.
  • Bhairon Ghati – Usually Vaishno Devi Yatra is considered incomplete without visiting the Bhairav Baba temple. But from the original route, the shrine falls en route to Bhawan. It is the site where the head of Bhairon Nath fell after the Goddess Vaishnavi beheaded him. Legends state it that due to the genuine apologies of the Bhairon Nath, Mata Rani gave him a blessing that he too will be worshipped by her devotees. Otherwise, the Yatra of the devotees will be considered incomplete. Also, Maa not only forgave him but also helped him attain salvation. Thus, visiting Bhairav Baba Mandir after having Darshan of Vaishno Devi is a must.

Vaishno Devi Darshan Tips

  • The most important thing for which you have undertaken the enthralling trek and reached here is to have Darshan of the goddess. The Vaishno Devi Darshan timings is not fixed. The temple remains open 24*7. Thus, devotees can get Darshan anytime soon they reach the shrine. But, it is during the Aarti that the pilgrims have to wait for two hours to perform pooja. The Vaishno Devi Attka Aarti is performed twice daily at 6:20 am – 8:00 am and 7:20 pm – 8:30 pm. Read on to know more about the Darshan.
  • Take a bath before proceeding for the Darshan. Separate bathing ghats, toilets and bathrooms are available for men and women nearby Bhawan. Efforts have been made to maneuver the water from the sacred cave to these bathrooms.
  • Thereafter, avail a locker facility and deposit all your belongings including your mobile phones, cameras and shoes there.
  • Subsequently, reach gate number 1. Wait for the announcement of your group number. Once it is called, proceed for the much awaited moment. Meanwhile, you can enjoy Vaishno Devi live Darshan at many of the televisions installed on the way.
  • Usually, it takes no time to have Darshan. But, during peak season or Navratri, pilgrims have to wait for at least 8-9 hours in the queue to get the Darshan. But, the wait during that time is surely worth it.
  • Once you reach in the waiting hall, you will find a designated area where you have to give your coconut. In return, you will get a token. Keep it safe with you.
  • Next, you proceed towards the entry point to the shrine. You will see two caves here. Out of the two, one is ancient and original. In the bygone era, yatris used to travel through this only. Even today, this cave is open for the public for a few days. Obtaining darshan through this gave is a matchless experience. Since the old cave remains closed majority of the year, two new tunnels are created for the convenience. One is used to take the pilgrims to the holy pindies while the other is designated for the exit purpose.
  • Also, at the opening of the original cave, the torso of the Bhairon Baba is located in the form of rock. Pilgrims have to step on it before entering the Purani Gufa at Vaishno Devi.
  • At the end of the tunnel, Mother Goddess keeps on waiting for her followers. There are no statues, idols or images. Rather, three pindies representing Maa Lakshmi, Maa Saraswati and Maa Kali collectively represent Maa Vaishno, an incarnation of the three Supreme Energies. Once you reach there, concentrate only on the pindies and the description given by the priests. Bow down, make a wish and move further quickly in order to let other pilgrims have the darshan.

What to do after having Darshan of Maa Vaishno Devi?

  • After cherishing the Darshan of Maa Vaishno Devi till your heart’s content, move out of the tunnel. Adjacent to the gate, you will find Amrit Kund and Charan Ganga. Fill the water flowing from the tap in a bottle or just drink it as Parsad. This water comes from the holy cave and is said to have healing and purifying properties.
  • As you move a little further from the Amrit Kund, you will see Parsad counter. Devotees get a parshad in the form of a small pouch containing Mishri and a coin, also known as Khazaana (treasure). You can keep this coin in your wallet or locker where you keep your cash. It is supposed to bring good luck and prosperity.
  • Remember the token you received in the waiting hall upon giving your coconut? It’s the time to use it now! Show the token and get your coconut back as parshad.
  • Later on, devotees have to do ‘Kanya Pujan’. They can either do it at the shrine itself or after coming back to their home.

Facilities available during the Vaishno Devi Yatra

To cater to the needs of the pilgrims, various facilities are available during the course of the trek. Here’s a list of services one can benefit from.

  • Bhojanalyas

There are five Bhojanalayas en route to satiate the hunger of the travelers. These eateries are run at the no-profit basis. For this reason, you can savor hygienic food here at cheap and affordable prices. Apart from these, there are many privately owned food joints all along the way.

  • Shelter Sheds

Braving the step climb is indeed difficult. So, taking rest for a while is quite obvious. Furthermore, the weather also sometimes become unpredictable during the trek. Under those circumstances, yatris can halt at the shelter shed covering much of the trekking trail.

  • Medical Facilities

Vaishno Devi Yatra involves strenuous trekking and the shrine is nestled at a high altitude. For this reason, a medical checkup and consulting your doctor before proceeding is always advisable. Patients prone to asthma, cardiac and orthopedic problems are prevented from using stairs. Having said that, emergencies can occur anytime. So, a block hospital is available Katra. In addition, one can find charitable dispensary which works round the clock at Banganga, Adkuwari, Sanjichhat and Bhawan.

  • Refreshment Points

At a few handpicked locations, visitors can easily find refreshment points. Besides offering light snacks and drinks, these units provide mind-blowing views of the nearby surroundings. Sip on freshly brewed coffee or tea. Or else, you can buy milk or cold drinks. Biscuits, popcorns, mineral water along with other refreshments are also available here.

  • Blanket Stores

Usually, yatris feel the need of blankets at night. Provision of the same is accessible at the blanket stores at various locations. Although the service is free of cost, yet a nominal and refundable security deposit fee has to be paid. Visitors get entire amount refunded once they return the blankets.

Cloakroom facility is at one’s disposal any time of the day or night. Tourists can now leave behind all their excess of luggage in the cloakroom available at the hotel, lodges, guest houses, etc. As a matter of fact, video cameras, mobile phones and other electronic equipment are not allowed. So, yatris can either make appropriate arrangements for the safekeeping of such items or keep them in the cloakrooms.

  • Souvenir Shops

If you want to carry a memento of the sacred pilgrimage, you can head to any souvenir shop at Jammu, Katra bus stand, Adhkuwari, Sanjichat and Bhawan. Gold coins, silver coins, chunri, chura, cholas, CDs, etc. are available here at less prices.

Branches of many private and nationalized banks are at Katra. Additionally, ATM facilities in the town also enable tourists to avail benefits anytime. Bank branches are also available at Adhkuwari and Bhawan complex.

Place to rest at Bhawan

Private hotels near Vaishno Devi Bhawan are available to provide neat, adequate and clean resting places to the pilgrims. Also, there are many other resting spots like Manokamana Bhawan, Saraswati Bhawan where tourists can spend a night. Waiting Halls are constructed for the comforts of the devotees. One can make an online booking or reserve the space on the first-come-first-serve basis.

Travel from Vaishno Devi Bhawan to Bhairon Ghati By Ropeway

new delhi to vaishno devi trip

One of the latest advancements made is the introduction of the Vaishno Devi Ropeway . The cable cars in the ropeway take devotees from Bhairon Ghati to Vaishno Devi Bhawan in just 5 minutes. So, now there is one more option available making the holy pilgrimage easier than ever before. Ropeway ticket to Vaishno Devi temple costs only 100 Rs.

Furthermore, tickets are available on the spot at Bhawan. The ropeway can carry 800 people every hour and is operational now. Because of the extreme ascent from Bhawan to Bhairav Baba Mandir, the hike turns to be a tiring one. But, as now Vaishno Devi gets the ropeway service, reaching the shrine will be a fun full of unparalleled adventure.

Best Time to visit Vaishno Devi

Maa Vaishno Devi Shrine remains open for the pilgrims throughout the year. But, the best time to plan Vaishno Devi Yatra is between the months of March and October. One of the reason is that the climate is cool and pleasant during these months. Also, the shrine receives a huge footfall during the Navratras, May-July and New Year vacations. So until and unless you’re an ardent devotee or are ready to face a huge crowd, you can avoid your visit during this time.

There is another reason for planning your Vaishno Devi trip during off-peak season. You may become lucky to have Darshan through the original cave. Planning a trip during winter months is also considered as the best option to witness snowfall.

Places to visit

Besides the holy cave, there are other places to visit in and around Vaishno Devi Shrine. Read on to know more.

  • Temple of Lord Shiva : Just after coming out from the coconut reclaiming counter, you will find a few steps descending downwards. These steps take you to the temple of Lord Shiva where a Jyotirlingam of the Lord is nestled in a cave.
  • Other temples : A few other temples of Mata Durga, Shri Ram with Sita and Lakshman, Lord Hanuman, etc. are situated at the different points of the Bhawan complex. Signboards have been put up at Bhawan to guide the yatries as to the location of these temples.
  • Dera Baba Banda – The 300 years old Gurudwara which is dedicated to Baba Banda Bahadur lies in close proximity to Katra.
  • Nau Devi Temple – A cave temple which houses 9 deities believed to be incarnations of Goddess Durga. The shrine is also located near Katra.
  • Kol Kandoli – Situated in Jammu, Kol Kandoli is said to be the first milestone of the Vaishno Devi Yatra. Maa Vaishno spent her childhood here. She appeared here as a girl of age 5 and did penance for 12 years.
  • Raghunath Temple – Another one of the top tourist attractions in Jammu is Raghunath Temple, dedicated to Lord Rama.
  • Shiv Khori – Most of the people visiting Vaishno Devi also extended their pilgrimage to Shiv Khori. The holy cave enshrines the sacred lingam of Lord Shiva. Also, folklores connect the holy site to Amarnath Cave which is another highly revered shrine for Hindus. The holy abode of supreme almighty is located 70 km away from Katra.
  • Patni Top – Treat yourself to the astounding views at Patni Top. A famous picnic spot is thronged by visitors who love to play with the snow and enjoy fun-filled moments.
  • Mansar Lake – A scenic lake surrounded by forest-covered hills.
  • Bahu Fort – Perhaps the oldest edifice and fort in the city.

Dos & Don’ts During Vaishno Devi Yatra

Embarking on a pilgrimage requires some instructions to be followed. Vaishno Devi trip planning is no exception. Pilgrims should adhere to some rules and follow the instructions provided.

  • Be a responsible pilgrim and try to help the fellow yatris.
  • Use dustbins to throw your garbage.
  • Motivate other pilgrims en route.
  • Dress appropriately.
  • Prepaid SIM cards do not work in Jammu and Kashmir. But you can always use postpaid or local SIM Cards.
  • In case anyone gets lost, simply inform at the shrine offices or security guards.
  • Maintain the sanctity of the place.
  • Be aware of the monkeys. They instantly jump out of nowhere and usually attack on your mobile phones, parsad and other eatables. Keep them at bay but don’t throw stones on them.
  • If travelling in monsoon season, pack a raincoat and in case of winter months, keep woolens with you.
  • Deposit your offerings only in the donation boxes.
  • Except for cash and selected offerings, nothing is allowed inside the Holy Cave. So, don’t carry any extra items with you.
  • Don’t carry articles of general use like belts, wrist watches with leather belts, combs, pen, pencil, purses, handbags, etc.
  • Don’t shout slogans of praises around the sanctum sanctorum and inside the tunnel.
  • Don’t litter here and there.
  • Don’t stand for too long near the landslide-prone areas.
  • Don’t harm the ponies, porters, pithoos or palki owners.
  • Don’t use the stairs if you are a heart patient or are prone to blood pressure issues.
  • Using shampoo, soap, oil, etc. at the Bathing Ghats is strictly prohibited.
  • Avoid offensive language or vulgar gestures en route.
  • Smoking, drinking liquor, eating non-vegetarian food or betel leaves and chewing tobacco is strictly prohibited.
  • Don’t encourage begging.

It is one of the holy shrines in India, where thousands of pilgrims are come from all across the world to take the blessings of Vaishno Devi (also known as Mata Rani, Jagdamba, Sherawali, Vaishnavi, Ambe or Durga) New Route (TARAKOTE ROUTE) Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 19th, 2018 Tarakote Marg Gate is located around 2.5 km from Katra Chowk, and you may take an autorickshaw to reach here. Through this new route, the distance from Tarakote Marg Gate to Adhkuwari is 7 km but better than the 6-km old route due to its cleanliness, unavailability of palanquins, ponies & Pithoos and this route is not crowdy. Note: Like two routes from Katra Chowk to Adhkuwari, there are also two routes from Adhkuwari to Maa Vaishno Devi Bhawan. The new route takes you to Bhawan via Himkoti. The distance between Adhkuwari to Bhawan is around 2.5 km and this track offers the facility of battery-operated vehicles. Unlike the old route, you may not find palanquins, ponies & Pithoos here. You will see a very limited number of shops on this route. NEW ROUTE Katra -> Banganga -> Charan Paduka -> Adhkuwari -> Himkoti Marg -> Vaishno Devi Bhawan Read more Written March 18, 2024
  • DRNSV123 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent trek Tarakote route Me and wife decided to trek to Bhawan and seek darshan of matarani. We reached Katra by New Delhi Katra Vande Bharat at night which reached late at 130am on 26th Feb. After checkin hotel and rest for 1hr, we reached Tarakote route at 5am, RFID collected (it is open from 4am). Auto fare Rs210 from Jammu Rd. Reached Adhkuwari at 8am, took parchi for darshan of gufa. Then went up further to Bhawan by Himkoti route. Reached Bhawan at 1115am. Kept bag, mobile, shoes in Manokamana Bhawan locker (Rs 100 deposit). Took sky walk to temple. Very satisfying darshan in temple and gufa. No rush or push at all. Returned by 1145am to collect bags then had Kadhi rice in Bhajanalaya and then waited in line for Bhairoji Ropeway at 1245pm (Rs 100 tkt, valid for 2hrs). We got ropeway by 1245pm. At Bhairoji temple monkeys create lot of menace (don't keep any prasad bag or eatable in hand, keep in your bagpack). We returned back at 145pm. After having a cup of coffee we started return trek. Reached Adhkuwari at 4pm by Himkoti route. Unfortunately we were unable enter gufa due to delay. Then we started going down by Tarakote route. Had some deliciously snacks at Bikanerwala and reached Jammu rd Katra at 7pm. What i realised... 1. Tarakote-Himkoti (7+6km) route is best, no ponies. (Battery cars from Adhkuwari to Bhawan are there which create lot noise pollution). Ample light, seating arrangement, less crowded so peaceful. 2. Water filling stations, clean washrooms and nescafe are available at regular intervals. 3. Temple is closed between 12noon to 4pm. So start trek as early as you can. Ropeway is closed at 5pm. 4. Carry good bagpack to keep prasad, dry snacks and water bottle. 5. Staying at any hotel on Jammu rd is good. 6. Must try food at Nathu's and Sagar ratna. Very amazing experience in Katra, good people and 6 to 8 degree temperature. Jai Mata Di.. Read more Written February 29, 2024

  • Voyager138896 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles New Road to Vaishno Devi temple If you are planning to visit Vaishno Devi Temple, take the new route that starts at Tarakote, it is less and less steep. Almost the entire route is shaded with lots of benches to sit and rest. Horses are not allowed in this route hence it is clean. There are a few eateries along the way like CCD and McDonalds but do not bank much on them as the options in the menu is really limited. Additionally, there are a lot of restrooms at short intervals which are surprisingly clean and well maintained. There is a Parchi counter which is less crowded at the point where the yatra starts in Tarakote. You can reach Tarakote by auto from the bus stand, the fare is Rs 240 for 3 persons. This route meets the old route at Ardhkuwari, it is about 1-1.5 Km longer than the old route but since the road has a very soft gradient it is less tiring. Read more Written November 26, 2023

  • RajivS708 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good and Bad Honestly, more better facility can be offered by the Central Govt, State Govt and Shrine board for the bhaktas, but as I believe the only mottos of the shrine board to make misery and pain of the visitors and they have sadistic pleasure on this. While I have divided the topic on few points which are good, bad and horrible Security : Top class, go freely and cooperate at all levels, its for us only against the terrorist activities Travel from Jammu: Lot many private buses you will see after getting down from railway station, each takes between 80/100 per seat. Time to Katra is 2 hours. For private buses, the new area is designated and its horrible. Zero infrastructure and when you reach katra that’s even more horrible, all muddy area, no place to stand, all the chest beating by the govt on development is visible when you arrive in Katra bus depot. Tracking: Entry point We made the online booking for 10 people and it was clearly mentioned just we have to present the printout in the entry point. As I made all the bookings, was happy that we will not stand I queue for registration which takes two to three hours. This is utter non sense even for the offline yatris. Imagine just before the journey , you are waiting for two to three hours in queue that too all have to come there. This has no sense only when Govt talk about all digitization and what not. Coming to back to my online ticket, the rules changed overnight just like not bandi and all the ten yatris including the senior citizens and kids had to go back to market to get the registration with card. The most horrible part is the autos have union and they charge 260 per auto which means we wasted two hours plus 1000 rs just to go back and wait. After the above horrible experience, we started tracking from old track which is banganga route. The pony riders officially they can charge 1250 but depending upon the crowd they can take upto 10000/- per pony. Again corruption where shrine board, govt and all are involved but as usual hindus are primary target for all the loot by this trustees and govt. There are plenty of food options are available and also for kids, the child trolley can be used charges between 350 to 600/-. After reaching Ardhkuwari, if you have done the online booking for electric cars, the tracking becomes much easy, with in 30 minutes one can reach to Bhawan, otherwise tracking it will take three hours. Its better to reach before 7 or after 8 due to Aarti time. There are many clock room available, no facility of tracking so if you can carry one lock on your own and see the open locker put the belonging mobile, belt etc and lock it. Again one more corruption here , as yatris are tired, the pooja shops charges 350 rs for one packet of coconut/some prasad etc for keeping one mobile in their safe custody The bhairav baba darshan is must, even I was scared as people were saying two three hours of tracking, but if you can rest for thirty minutes after the mataji darshan, with stair case you can reach with in 20/25 minutes. Its not that difficult Some suggestion to govt. Make pony facility organized and line by line within one area, as per the number each one get the pony allocation. This will prevent the corruption by trustees and govt officials Make waiting area in entry and exit so yatris can rest Make dedicated buses from bhwan to katra statins/jammu fixed point for pick up and drop off Make jammu railway station better, its still long way to go comparing to other junctions Jai Mata di Read more Written November 9, 2023
  • pprc79 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great, but should allow more time inside the mandir It is very well-managed and beautifully oraganised by the Katra shrine board. Clean toilets along the way, several food stalls and drinking water points for every weary traveler. Places to sit and rest are a little less though, especially after Ardhkuwari. If I wanted to take a 2 min-break, i had to stand, although there were benches...they were on the strong sunny side. However, this is not a major problem as the entire trek up was very beautiful. It was 90% shaded., so one would not feel the strong sun like it used to be before. The 2nd part of the climb was better as there were no ponies allowed after Ardhkuwari. The 1st 6kms was a little too smelly due to ponies. However, sweepers were constantly cleaning. But still. The mandir is clean and beautiful. Lockers are available at the top to keep your mobiles, smartwatches, bags, belts and shoes. The actual visit of the Vaishnodevi was too short...not even 10 seconds were allowed to each visitor to pray to the deity. This was a little frustrating. Read more Written October 30, 2023

  • Balaji V 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Walking - Hiking - Darshan We reached katra 16th June, early morning (6 a.m.) by train. We obtained the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) equipped Yatra card tag at the railway station itself.   After checking into a nearby hotel, we freshened up and had our breakfast by 9 a.m. We took an Auto, and he charged us around Rs. 210 to take us to Tarakote Marg. Tarakote Marg is the new trekking path to the shrine. It was a sunny day, a bit hot at Katra, and Tarakote Marg had shelter covering the entire track all the way. At every few corners (change in direction), shelter was provided for a short distance.  RFID can be obtained at the Tarakote marg entry point. We saw a very less crowd around 9am in the morning to obtain the RFID. Though we have already obtained it, we just observed the facilities at the entry point. At 8:50 a.m., we (groups of three friends) started the trek. We started well, were able to cover 2km, and took a rest for 7-8 minutes. We continued in a similar way, like every 1.5km or 2km, had a break for 7-8 minutes, and we did this till all the way up to Bhavan, 14km. We paced the walking quite well and had enough breaks. By doing so, we reached the shrine at 1 p.m. Tarakote has very few good restaurants and a few eateries every 2km. Toilets are also available within 2–3 kilometers. It was quite safe and less crowded. We are able to get the shrine board locker (free), for which we wait for 15-20 minutes. After keeping the things safe (all electronic gadgets and bags), we were in the queue for darshan. Within an hour, we were able to complete the darshan with ease. After having our lunch in one of the restaurants at Bhavan, we started trekking back to Katra at 3.30 pm and around 6.45 pm, with very few breaks. Read more Written July 9, 2023

Vaishno Devi trip plan with family

Vaishno Devi remains crowded throughout the year, but it is mostly visited by tourists during the months of March to July as the weather is pleasant and comforting for the devotees. The maximum temperature is 31 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature is 17 degrees Celsius making it appropriate for darshan and because of this many travellers prefer scheduling their Vaishno Devi trip plan with family during these months.

It usually rains between August and September, the weather conditions can get a little extreme this time, but despite that many devotees prefer travelling around this time. November to February are the winter months and many travellers do not prefer travelling during these months because weather conditions are harsh and Vaishno Devi trekking distance becomes difficult to cover around this time.

Visiting the Vaishno Devi temple in Bhawan is a sacred pilgrimage undertaken by millions of people each year. Taking the trek up from the base camp in Katra to the Holy City of Bhawan is said to cleanse your spirit and soul, preparing you for a Darshan - a deeply spiritual beholding of a deity. By planning your trip well, traveling to Katra, preparing for the long trek up to Bhawan, and upholding the rituals around visiting the Sanctum Sanctorum, you can experience Vaishno Devi the way people have been for thousands of years.

Planning Your Trip

Step 1 Aim to go outside of peak season to avoid the crowds.

  • There is often a surge of people who visit Vaishno Devi around New Year’s Eve, which can make waiting times for the trek much longer. Travel in early December, or late January to avoid the New Year’s rush.
  • If you’re traveling in the winter, you’ll need to wear heavy woolen clothing and sturdy shoes in order to complete the pilgrimage safely.

Step 2 Obtain a passport and a tourist visa if you’re traveling internationally.

  • You will also need to apply for a tourist visa to visit India. You can find more information on how to do so on the Indian Bureau of Immigration website: https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html
  • It can often take several weeks for a passport or visa application to be approved. Make sure to apply for your passport and visa at least 1 month before your trip.

Step 3 Reserve accommodation in Katra.

  • There is plenty of paid and free accommodation available in Katra for those undertaking a yatra to Vaishno Devi. For more information on the accommodation available, visit the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Official Website: https://www.maavaishnodevi.org/rented_acc.aspx
  • A yatra is the pilgrimage to a holy place, undertaken in Hinduism and other Indian religions. Someone who undertakes a yatra is known as a yatri.

Step 4 Register for a yatra to the Holy Bhawan.

  • You will need a valid email address and a mobile phone number in order to register for a yatra online.
  • You can also register for a yatra at the base camp in Katra. Visit the Yatra Registration Center by the bus stand to receive a Yatra slip in person.
  • Registering for a yatra is free of charge.

Step 5 Book a flight into New Delhi.

  • New Delhi is an incredible city to visit and explore itself. Enjoy your time in India by visiting as many different places as you can.

Travelling from New Delhi to Katra

Step 1 Fly from New Delhi to Jammu for a speedy journey.

  • You will need to find another method of transportation to get from Jammu to Katra. However, flying into Jammu will cut down on your travel time significantly.
  • A flight from New Delhi to Jammu will usually cost between 3000 and 8000 rupees, which is around $40 to $110 US dollars.

Step 2 Catch a train to Katra to get better views of the country.

  • A train ride from New Delhi to Katra will take between 10 to 15 hours, depending on which train you board. Visit the India Rail Info website for more information on train transport around India: https://indiarailinfo.com/
  • A train ride from Jammu to Katra will take around 2 hours.

Step 3 Drive to Katra for more flexibility.

  • With perfect traffic, the drive from New Delhi to Katra will take around 10 hours. Schedule some stops along the way, and plan to rest in a town such as Ludhiana halfway through your journey to break it up slightly.
  • Travelling from Jammu to Katra by car should only take 2 to 3 hours at the most.

Step 4 Take a bus to Katra for a direct trip.

  • The Shri Shakti AC Express will provide a direct journey from New Delhi, through Jammu, and into Katra. The trip will take around 10 hours from New Delhi to Katra. You can find more information about this journey here: https://indiarailinfo.com/train/-train-shri-shakti-ac-express-22461/22086/664/10091
  • If you want to break up your bus trip a little more, try taking the Shatabdi Express from New Delhi to Ludhiana. You can take some time to stretch your legs or explore, before catching the Mail Express or Hemkunt Express through Jammu and into Katra. This trip will take roughly 12 to 13 hours on the road.

Organizing Your Trek to Bhawan

Step 1 Get a check-up in Katra if you suffer from breathing, heart, or similar ailments.

  • If you have any serious ailments or issues, you may be discouraged from completing the entire pilgrimage on foot. There are plenty of other ways for you to travel up to the shrine, so don’t be discouraged.

Step 2 Hire a pony, porter, or palanquin if you cannot make the trek.

  • A porter will be able to carry luggage or small children along the trek, which can make the journey easier.
  • A palanquin is a covered box on 2 sticks that a passenger can sit in. The palanquin will be carried along the trek by 4 people. This is the easiest way to complete the entire trek.

Step 3 Book a helicopter ride to Sanjhichhat for an easier journey.

  • The helicopter will fly you up to Sanjhichhat, which is the last stop on the pilgrimage before reaching Bhawan. This is the closest you can get to Bhawan by modern transport, but you will still need to travel the last 1.2 miles (1.9 km) by foot. Alternately, you may be able to hire a pony, palanquin, or porter from Sanchichhat to help.
  • The helicopter ride will be around 1045 rupees one way, or 2045 for a return trip. This is around $15 to $30 US dollars.
  • The helicopter journey will take around 10 minutes from Katra to Sanjhichhat. The same journey will take around 6 hours to complete on foot.

Step 4 Pack as lightly as possible for the trek.

  • Video cameras, mobile phones, and all other electronic devices should not be taken on the yatra. Make sure you leave these behind. [13] X Research source
  • Bring a little bit of money on the yatra, so that you can purchase food, water, and accommodation on the trek if you need it. However, make sure your money and other valuables are stored safely and securely to protect them from pickpockets.
  • To complete the trek comfortably, you will need weather appropriate clothing, drinking water, and a few vegetarian snacks for the journey. Most other things you need can be purchased along the way.
  • Make sure to bring your Yatra Registration Slip with you. It will be needed to begin the pilgrimage and to get into the Sanctum Sanctorum once you reach Bhawan.

Making the Pilgrimage

Step 1 Go to the Darshani Darwaaza to start the pilgrimage.

  • This spot is known as Darshani Darwaaza as it is the first spot on the trek where you can get a Darshan, or view. Take a look over the Trikuta mountain as you approach the gate and enjoy the view.
  • You can walk to the Darshana Darwaaza or hire an auto-rickshaw to take you there. If you hire a rickshaw, remove all of your valuables and lock it securely outside the gates before beginning your climb.
  • The Darshani Darwaaza is around 0.6 miles (0.97 km) from the train station in Katra.
  • If you are riding a pony, you will be directed towards the old track, as ponies are not allowed on the newer path.
  • The newer path is much wider, more accessible, and even a little shorter than the old track. The new gate will be much larger and much more grandiose than the less noticeable old gate.

Step 2 Stay respectful as you climb the track.

  • Do not smoke, chew tobacco, drink alcohol, or consume intoxicants before or during the yatra.
  • Keep the environment around you clean. Throw away all trash in a trash can, rather than littering the path.
  • Do not bring or consume any non-vegetarian food on the path.
  • Putting up posters, writing on the walls or floors, mutilating, or damaging the path in any way is a punishable offense. Do not leave anything behind as you walk.
  • Be wary of those around you. Even though the yatra is sacred, some people still may try to pickpocket or steal from you. Begging is also not allowed on the yatra.

Step 3 Stop at Ban Ganga to bathe in the sacred water.

  • A ghat is a flight of stairs that lead downs to a river.
  • It is believed that Mata Vaishno Devi, the deity which the yatra is focused around, used an arrow from her quiver to form the river. This is where the river gets its name - Ban meaning arrow and Ganga standing for the sacred river Ganges.
  • Remember to stay respectful while bathing. It is a process of cleansing your body, rather than a relaxing swim.
  • Your Yatra registration slip will also be checked and stamped in at Ban Ganga. Make sure you keep it safely on your person throughout the entire pilgrimage.

Step 4 Visit Charan Paduka to seek the blessings of Mata.

  • There is also a medical unit located at Charan Paduka. If you find yourself having difficulty breathing or climbing, seek assistance here before proceeding.

Step 5 Pass through Adhkuwari to cleanse your sins.

  • Adhkuwari is a narrow cave where Mata meditated for 9 months her journey to the Sanctum Sanctorum. After 9 months, she used her trident to create the exit on the other side.
  • The cave is only wide enough for 1 person to pass through it at a time. Keep moving so as to avoid holding up other yatries.

Step 6 Enjoy the view or meditate at Himkoti.

  • Himkoti also offers oxygen cylinders and medicare if you are having trouble continuing on the journey.
  • Himkoti has no particular religious significance but is still a significant place along the trek.

Step 7 Pause for a breath at Sanjhichhat.

  • The helipad is used for transport between Katra and Sanjhichhat. It is the closest you can get to Bhawan without walking.
  • Sanjhichhat is the highest point on the trek, making a great place to take in the amazing view of the surrounding area.
  • It is around 1.2 miles (1.9 km) from Sanjhichhat to Bhawan.

Experiencing Bhawan

Step 1 Validate your Yatra Registration slip for a Holy Darshan group number.

  • If you visit during an off-peak time, you may be able to begin a Darshan immediately, If Bhawan is busy, you may need to stay overnight and queue for several hours in preparation.

Step 2 Purchase a Bhaint Prashad if you want to make an offering to Mata.

  • Previously, pilgrims would bathe directly in the water flowing from the Holy Cave. Nowadays, the water from the Holy Cave has been redistributed across all of the bathing areas. This way, no matter where you bathe in Bhawan, you will receive the blessings of the Holy Water.

Step 4 Store everything other than cash and offerings in a cloakroom.

  • Articles of general use, such as handbags, belts, wrist watches, pens, pencils, or anything else on your person apart from cash and an offering must be stored in a cloakroom.
  • Anything made of leather must be stored in the cloakroom, as it cannot be brought into the Sanctum Sanctorum.
  • You cannot bring sweets or food into the Holy Cave. These should be stored safely in the cloakroom.

Step 5 Wait outside the queue complex for your number to be called.

  • The queue complex has several televisions which explain the required process of a Darshan in the Sanctum Sanctorum. Pay attention to these to avoid making any mistakes or ruining the experience for others.

Step 6 Appreciate the Pindies in silence.

  • You should not set down any offerings inside the cave itself, as these would quickly pile up. As you exit the cave, you will find a counter where you can leave your offering. In exchange, you will be given a Khazaana Prashad. This is a holy coin that is said to bring luck and prosperity to ever holds it. [27] X Research source
  • Some may bring coconuts with them that they want to be blessed. Due to safety and security reasons, you cannot carry your own coconut through the Holy Cave. If you want to bring a coconut, leave it at the Coconut Prashad counter in the main waiting hall. You will receive a coconut token that you can exchange for a blessed coconut after your Darshan. [28] X Research source
  • There are many other sacred Darshans inside the cave other than Vaishno Devi. For more information on other Darshans, visit the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board website here: https://www.maavaishnodevi.org/inside_cave.aspx
