What You Need To Know Before Purchasing Whitsundays Day Trips

Whitsunday Day Trips are the perfect way to visit the Whitsundays Islands. These day tours are mostly fast-paced boats that maximize your day on the water. Each trip is slightly different, but most tick off the two big wants for any holidaymaker, Whitehaven Beach and snorkelling the coral around the islands. When choosing your Whitsunday Day Trips, there are specific factors that you need to take into consideration.

  • Price Of The Tour  – Pricing is always an essential factor in choosing any tour; you want value for your money. Most trips range from $159 to $250 for an adult and $149 to $199 for a child; there are family packages available on most tours as well. There is an opportunity to pay $159 for an adult with ZigZag Whitsundays, but you will need to book one of the first 12 seats on tour. –
  • What The Tour Includes – This is where some Whitsundays day tours differ from each other .some trips include lunch and a wetsuit in the price, and some have them as optional extras. All tours include a mask and snorkel. Make sure you read what the trip consists of, so you will be prepared for the day. –
  • Departure And Return Times – This is extremely important if you are flying or catching a bus on the same day as the tour. Some tours depart as early as 8 am, while others leave around 10 am. Return times vary between 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm. The return times can vary by 20 minutes depending on the wind and tides that day. –
  • Where Does The Trip Go – The most important answer! Well, once again, it varies… so let us list the most popular place a day trip from Airlie Beach goes. Please note a day trip goes to around 3 locations in a day.

Our Favourite Day Tour Locations In The Whitsundays

  • Hill Inlet Lookout Whitehaven Beach North End at Bettys Beach
  • South Whitehaven Beach, including the new South Whitehaven Beach Lookout
  • Chalkies beach – excellent beach plus snorkel location and lookout platform
  • Langford spit – now has a walking track and lookout
  • Nara inlet – aboriginal rock drawings
  • Boarder island – snorkel location
  • Whitsunday Island – multiple snorkel locations
  • Hook Island – numerous snorkel locations
  • Hayman Island – multiple snorkel locations

One other factor is if you are worried about seasickness, if this is the case choose the fastest boat you can find. The boats like Big Fury and ZigZag Whitsundays have over 1000 horsepower. You will not get seasick in these fast boats, they ride the tops of the waves instead of rocking through them. If you need help or have any questions about Whitsunday Day Trips the contact details for all operators are on their product page

Daydream Island Resort in the Whitsundays reopened in April 2019 after an extensive redevelopment.

There has been a lot of travel industry chatter about the new Daydream Island and its family-friendly and eco credentials. So last month, while holidaying on Hamilton Island, my husband (Adam) and baby daughter (Evie) and I headed over for a day trip to check out the re-vamped resort.

Each day, a number of the guests staying at Daydream Island Resort leave the island on day trips. They head off to explore the Whitsundays, snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, visit Whitehaven Beach or play a round of golf on Dent Island. This means that Daydream Island can allow day trippers without the risk of overcrowding.

Cruise Whitsundays offers ferry transfers to Daydream Island from Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island.  We boarded the ferry at Hamilton Island airport at 10am and Daydream Island was the first stop, 30 minutes later.

Evie was napping in her stroller as we arrived and we were very happy to find that we could wheel her from the ferry deck, along the wharf, through the transit lounge and into the light and airy resort lobby. As far as first impressions go, Daydream Island was winning.

For many family-friendly, tropical island resorts the pool is the main attraction. And whist the pool on Daydream is lovely, it’s pipped to the post by the Living Reef.

Prior to the redevelopment Daydream had a coral lagoon. But resort’s new Living Reef is bigger, more eco-friendly and educational than ever before. And while Adam sat with our sleeping baby, I was taken on a tour by the Living Reef manager, Johnny Gaskell .

All of the interactive experiences start in the Reef Exploration Centre.  It’s where the in-house marine biologists have created a number of educational displays and a touch pool. And they are currently working on a display that demonstrates the impact that climate change is having on the coral of the Great Barrier Reef.

After the Reef Exploration Centre, Johnny showed me the underwater observatory where you descend below ground to look through a large acrylic window at a typical reef system with living coral. While I was mesmerised by a large stingray gliding past, Johnny pointed out a rabbit fish having its gills cleaned by a blue streak cleaner wrass.

What I wish I’d had time for, was doing a yoga class in the underwater observatory, but unfortunately the timings didn’t work out this visit.

Other guided experiences that day trippers and guests can do are, a 90 minute snorkel tour (available to those 10 years and over), guided fish feeding (available to those over 3 years old), and the stingray splash, where anyone aged 6 and over can get into Living Reef with the baby stingrays.

As we walked back from the baby stingray pool, Johnny showed me where he and the team are working on creating a coral propagation, restoration and education program funded by the Queensland and Australian Governments. Once it’s up and running, raw water will be pumped in from the ocean to allow coral, selected from the wild, to grow and propagate in the hope that it can be replanted back into cyclone damaged sites to regenerate areas in need. If all goes to plan, this technique of coral restoration will be the first of its kind in the Whitsundays.

After an hour learning about the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem with Johnny, I re-joined Adam and Evie who were relaxing in a cabana by the pool.

Despite the pool not being heated in the middle of winter, Adam happily handed over baby minding duty and went for a swim before lunch. It was too cold for me, so I wandered across the bridges and through the palms that line the edges of the pool, taking the wimps way to the swim up bar.

The Barefoot Bar has an extensive cocktail menu and at lunch time a burger buffet. For $20 you can make your own beef, chicken or veggie burger and wash it down with a soft drink.

Having had burgers the day before, we decided to lunch at Inkstone Kitchen & Bar. We found a table with a great view of the pool and gardens that kept us all happy – me in the sun, Adam in the shade and Evie’s stroller in a cool, quiet corner out of the way.

The lunch menu offered modern Australian meals, gourmet salads and wood fired pizza. For us, the light and perfectly seasoned salt and pepper calamari was the highlight.

After lunch it was time for us to catch the ferry back to Hamilton Island.

As we cruised across the azure blue waters of the Whitsundays back to our extended family, Adam and I agreed that when Evie was a bit older we would bring her back to Daydream Island. The island is great for families with babies, but we know she would get so much more out of the experience if she were a few years older. And next time we’d stay for much longer than one day.

A Seward Highway road trip promises epic adventures

daydream day trip

Anchorage visitors venturing beyond city limits will find a scenic escape via the Seward Highway, a spectacular route with a surprising number of roadside diversions that culminates in a storied harbor town.

This renowned 125-mile roadway runs south from Anchorage to the town of Seward. The first portion follows alongside a narrow finger of water called Turnagain Arm. This historic waterway is named for British explorer Captain James Cook, who had to “turn again” when his ship reached its dead end.

Along the journey, the highway is framed by the dramatic Chugach and Kenai Mountains. Ancient glaciers peek through lush summertime greenery. Passing small communities, rustic roadhouses and pristine alpine lakes, the highway terminates in Seward on the edge of Resurrection Bay.

The time-pressed traveler could make it to Seward and back in one long, full day, logging five-plus road hours alone. But overnighting in Seward (or elsewhere) offers a more enjoyable and leisurely experience, and allows time to appreciate the Alaska scenery and character, along with the history, recreation and dining offered along the way.

About 45 minutes south of Anchorage, Girdwood is a laid-back ski town that relocated inland a few miles from the Seward Highway after the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake.

For Alaskans and visitors alike, Girdwood is a recreation mecca, with a charming collection of memorable restaurants, art galleries, ski chalets and condos. Winter slopes and ski lifts transform to host downhill mountain biking come summer. Paved paths thread through the town, offering an opportunity to take in scenery during a stroll.

daydream day trip

For hikers, the user-friendly Winner Creek Trail begins just behind the picturesque Hotel Alyeska. For a challenge, tackle the south end of the 21-mile Crow Pass Trail, which connects Girdwood to Eagle River’s outskirts north of Anchorage. The first few miles of the Girdwood end of the trail wind upward, with breathtaking views of glaciers, jagged mountaintops and remnants of long-gone gold mining efforts.

Girdwood’s dining options are impressively plentiful. Begin at a local icon, The Bake Shop, open as of press time Wednesday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. A morning-time staple for 40-plus years, The Bake Shop features homestyle favorites like sourdough pancakes and sweet rolls. For lunch, the shop switches to homemade soups and sandwiches on fresh-baked bread.

For a special dinner experience, try Jack Sprat. Its regional cuisine with an Alaska touch is truly special, highlighting seasonal fresh produce and locally sourced protein such as halibut. The tall chalet windows offer romantic views of the mountainside. Check the restaurant’s website for hours.

Nearby, stalwart Double Musky Inn is a tucked-away steakhouse known for colorful French Quarter decor, a world-class wine cellar and spot-on Creole classics with Alaska flair. Its lively elegance has delighted locals and tourists alike for decades. There will be a wait many nights, but it’s worth it.

For a fun, relaxed vibe, pop by Girdwood Brewing Co. With indoor tables and outdoor seating around gas-fed fire pits, sip pints or smaller-pour taster glasses while ordering from one or more local food trucks that rotate on site; the truck schedule is updated on the brewery’s website. They also sell trendy hoodies, trucker hats and artsy stickers to remember your sudsy Girdwood detour.

Like Girdwood, Portage once sat alongside the Seward Highway, but after the 1964 quake, Portage faded away, with little remaining today but the remains of decrepit cabins overtaken by aggressive brush. In Portage’s place, visitors today will find the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (Mile 79 Seward Highway), a sprawling sanctuary across 200 acres that provides large-enclosure spaces for orphaned and rehabilitating Alaska animals.

View animals by either driving, walking the 1.5-mile loop encircling the center, or booking a tour with one of the staff naturalists. Hours are 9 a.m.-7 p.m. May 1 through Sept. 15. Check the website for additional hours.

daydream day trip

An eastern turn at Portage down Portage Valley Road delivers motorists to the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center, and beyond that, the end-of-the-road town of Whittier.

As of this writing, the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center (Portage Lake Loop) is scheduled to open May 26, 2024. It sits about 5 miles east of the Seward Highway, a flat, pretty, quick drive. Named in honor of U.S. Reps. Nick Begich and Hale Boggs, whose flight in Alaska disappeared in 1972, the center is built on the edge of a lake on the moraine left by the receding Portage Glacier. The glacier is visible via boat trips to its front. The center itself offers science-geared educational opportunities for adults and kids alike.

Drive farther and travelers will encounter a truly different experience by way of the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. The 2.5-mile-long, one-way toll highway tunnel is a dark and moody viaduct through the formidable mountains. The longest in North America, it was originally a train tunnel connecting the western side of Turnagain Arm to the military port town of Whittier. Find tunnel schedules online to time your visit accordingly.

Whittier exists as a critical deep-water port. In this unusual community, most residents call one of two large buildings home due to the lack of housing and buildable land. For activities, there are glacier-viewing boats, hiking and fishing. The town’s single hotel, the lovely Inn at Whittier, was closed early in 2024 after flooding; reopening updates will be posted on their website. Camping and RV options exist as well.

The one-way toll tunnel is strange enough to warrant a one-hour side trip. If you have time, visit the small but surprisingly comprehensive Prince William Sound Museum. An impressive number of exhibits fills its snug space, capturing the story of Whittier’s history.

Arriving in Seward is a show-stopper. As the highway ends at last, the view opens up to this special place that’s surrounded by the dramatic mountains ringing Resurrection Bay. Seward is home to an amiable community with a hodgepodge economy built on fishing outfits, kayak companies, sightseeing excursions, shops, restaurants and bars, plus there’s a beautiful boat harbor where visitors can walk the docks. About 2,625 people live here year-round, and summer cruise ships can deliver thousands of visitors a day.

daydream day trip

Highlights of Seward include the Alaska SeaLife Center, a hands-on aquarium and working science facility that boasts opportunities to ogle diving puffins and swimming sea lions, peer at octopus up close and learn about the special place that is Resurrection Bay.

From the SeaLife Center, a leisurely walk up Fourth Avenue provides a serene sense of Seward’s long-ago frontier culture, with Old West storefronts, historical murals, steepled churches and commemorative plaques and historical markers. A paved footpath that runs from the SeaLife Center along the waterfront toward the harbor is a pleasant way to enjoy the mountain scenery.

Seward has plenty of hotels and motels, home rentals, hostel beds, camping and RV options for those overnighting it.

Beyond the roadways, day cruises through Kenai Fjords National Park are a popular way to soak up the glorious waters of Resurrection Bay. Otters, seals, puffins, orcas and various migrating whales all may make cameos on these charters, some of which include island stopovers for meals.

To see a glacier by foot, carve out a couple of hours for a stop at Exit Glacier. Located just inside Kenai Fjords National Park, this glacier at the edge of Harding Icefield recedes annually, to the sadness of many fans. But a moderately graded walking path leads to overlooks where the glacier is still visible and can be photographed.

daydream day trip

Seward is synonymous with fishing, and there are a bounty of half- or full-day charters that fish for halibut, salmon or both. Charters typically provide all fishing gear, and in town, there are options for having fish filleted and flash-frozen for shipping after your excursion ends. These trips depart early and return late and make for a full Alaska experience. Play your cards right, and you will enjoy the scenery of a wildlife-viewing trip while returning home with a freezer’s worth of fish to commemorate your unique and unforgettable Alaska vacation long after it’s over.

In honor of Earth Day 2024, today's Google Doodle takes us on a trip around the world

daydream day trip

Want to take a trip around the world? You can in two seconds thanks to Google.

Releasing its annual Earth Day doodle, Google displays the beauty of all six continents around the world. Using satellite technology, the search engine giant created a collage with each Google letter that shows the global sustainability efforts within each continent. The goal for this doodle is to give the audience a tour of positive environmental change in the world.

Here's a look at the Google Doodle for Earth Day:

When is Earth Day 2024?: Get ready to help your planet with our guide to the holiday.

Letters in Earth Day Google Doodle represent regions that are displaying positive environmental efforts

Location: Turks and Caicos Islands

Turks and Caicos is home to many biodiversity areas. In an effort to preserve the countries conservation, the island has made an effort to protect natural resources such as reefs and restoring endangered species like the rock iguana.

Location: Scorpion Reef National Park, Mexico .

Flying to the Gulf of Mexico, Google makes a stop in Arrecife de Alacranes. This is the largest reef in the southern Gulf of Mexico and the UNESCO biosphere reserve. In this marine protected area, many coral and several endangered bird and turtle species call this area home.

Location: Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland

If you like the cold you'll love Google's pitstop in Iceland. Although the country is well-known for its polar bears, the country has more beauty offer. In 2008, the UNESCO World Heritage Site was established as a national park to protect the ecosystem in and around Europe’s largest glacier. With the mix of volcanoes and glacial ice, this area is able to produce rare landscapes and flora.

Location: Jaú National Park, Brazil

If you'd like to spend time in a forest, Brazil's got you covered. Parque Nacional do Jaú is one of South America’s largest forest reserves. Located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest this UNESCO World Heritage Site protects many species, including the Amazonian manatee, the giant otter, jaguar and the margay.

Location: Green Great Wall, Nigeria

Bringing you back to the heat, Google take us to Nigeria. The African Union-led initiative's goal is to restore the land affected by desertification across the width of Africa. To combat this, the group has planted trees and other vegetation in sustainable ways. By doing this, communities in the area have seen an increased economic opportunities, food security and climate resilience since 2007.

Location: Pilbara Islands Nature Reserves, Australia

To end the journey around the world, Google's last stop is one of the Pilbara Island Nature Reserves in Australia. These reserves help protect fragile ecosystems, increasingly rare natural habitats and threatened or endangered species. Some of the species include marine turtles, shorebirds and seabirds.

Here are 3 ways Fond du Lac is celebrating Earth Day and Arbor Day this week

Events are planned at lakeside park pavilion, on main street and at founders hall of the congregation of sisters of st. agnes..

daydream day trip

FOND DU LAC — Earth Day is April 22, and with Arbor Day on its heels April 26, Fond du Lac will celebrate both all week long.

From the Gottfried Prairie & Arboretum to the Niagara Escarpment , the natural world of Fond du Lac is often marveled, and area businesses and organizations take the spring season as an opportunity to highlight and educate about what the area has to offer.

This year, city officials, Arbor Acres and the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes have each planned ways to honor Earth Day and Arbor Day. Here's how Fond du Lac will celebrate the nature-focused holidays.

City celebrates Arbor Day April 26 with Roberts class planting annual tree

The City of Fond du Lac will honor Arbor Day at 1 p.m. April 26 at the Lakeside Park Pavilion, in a joint celebration with the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Fond du Lac Campus.

A Roberts Elementary School third-grade class will plant the Arbor Day tree on the park's west lakefront, courtesy of Festival Foods, which will also donate tree seedlings for the students.

Fond du Lac will also receive its 36th Tree City Award after meeting Tree City USA’s four requirements: maintaining a tree board or department, having a tree care ordinance, dedicating an annual community forestry budget of a least $2 per capita, and hosting an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

UW Oshkosh's campus in Fond du Lac will receive the award for its fifth year of Tree Campus Higher Education status, contributing to UW Oshkosh being the only UW System school with all three of its campuses holding that status.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Urban Forestry Coordinator Olivia Witthun will present the awards on behalf of the National Arbor Day Foundation .

Fond du Lac nonprofit marks 20 years: Whisper Hill Clydesdales to celebrate 20th anniversary with fundraiser at The Hive April 27

Arbor-Earth Day Festival with Arbor Acres and more returns for second year

Arbor Acres will host the Arbor-Earth Day Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 27 on the north block of Main Street, between Merrill Avenue and Division Street.

The event includes a craft fair, yard games, brat fry, food trucks, drinks and live music, as well as a tree raffle benefiting Salute the Troops. The first-place prize is a Royal Raindrops Crab Apple from Midpark Nurseries Inc , including free planting from Arbor Acres.

Bay Lakes Council will host a sneaker drive at the festival, accepting new, gently used and good-condition sneakers that will be used for recycling and repurposing for those in need. Every pair donated will grant participants an entry for a chance to win a $250 Tree Work gift card from Arbor Acres.

For more information and updates, visit the Arbor Acres Facebook page .

CSA Earth Day Fair includes Earth-focused exhibitors and tours

The Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes will host the Earth Day Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27 at Founders Hall at the motherhouse, 320 County Road K.

The fair will include several exhibitors showcasing how to "care for our common home," featuring Advocap, Fond du Lac County Audubon Society, Fond du Lac Bird City, Fond du Lac Public Library, Fond du Lac Wastewater Treatment & Resource Recovery Facility, Friends of Gottfried Prairie & Arboretum, Glacial Lakes Conservancy, Niagara Escarpment Resource Network and more.

New this year is a series of 45-minute presentations throughout the day, beginning at quarter past each hour and covering topics such as water treatment technologies, the Winnebago Wild Rice Revitalization Project, using eBird, the value of native plants and the Niagara Escarpment.

Tours of the property will be available, with guided tours including solar array tours, a bird walk and a two-hour in-depth tour of the land including the escarpment. Space will be limited for each, so online pre-registration is encouraged, but not required.

Marian names next president: Marian University appoints former educator and Marian alum as 18th president

Self-guided tours are welcome, but visitors exploring the property will need to sign in at the registration desk in Founder's Hall and wear a visitor's badge while on the grounds. CSA will ask visitors to stay on pathways and remember to take only pictures and leave only footprints.

The Big Blue Yummy food truck will be on site 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a raffle will feature prizes of sustainable household products and gifts, including birdhouses, a fairy house, a native plant starter pack and an Atkinson Farm Basket.

A Day on Daydream Island

daydream island

Nestled in the Molle Group in the Whitsundays, Daydream Island is a tropical oasis like no other. This little slice of paradise has changed hands and undergone many refurbishments over the years, and it has never looked better following the most recent one . We decided to see for ourselves first hand, and what better way to experience the charm of Daydream Island than to take a trip over for the day?

daydream day trip

What a Day For a Daydream

We arrived at Cruise Whitsundays ferry terminal at Port of Airlie at 7:30 am to check-in for our 7:50 am departure, the dew still clinging to the grass on this crisp tropical winter morning as we took a short stroll from our accommodation on the main street of Airlie Beach. Winter in the Whitsundays is a bit of a tongue in cheek phrase, with average daily temperatures in the 30s, we knew we were in for a fun day in the sun. The ferry ride was a short 25-minute ride across the beautiful azure Coral Sea. Upon arrival, it's easy to see why this boutique island resort has caught and kept the hearts of so many locals and visitors - The quaint rock wall and jetties that make up this tiny marina are picturesque, and we couldn’t wait to see what lay ahead.

cruise whitsundays ferry

We were greeted and taken into the arrival and departure lounge, where a guest liaison briefed us on the facilities of the island and where we could explore as day visitors. The options seemed endless, and it was easy to get distracted by the beautiful aquarium wall filled with colourful coral and tropical fish, a taste of what was yet to unfold.

The Reef In Living Colour

Once we were left to explore, we decided to take a walk around the large multi-story reception and lounge area, beautifully adorned with white loovers and handing green planters that climbed to the ceilings, an architectural delight creating a natural airflow. Ample seating, a bar and restaurant were surrounded by a glass wall. At first, we thought the place was underwater, but upon a closer look we realised on the other side of the glass wall was our first look at the Living Reef, the largest outdoor aquarium in the southern hemisphere! Wrapping over 200m around the building and winding throughout the walkways surrounding it, the Living Reef was incredible to behold. Here we decided to grab a cup of coffee and head outside for one of their daily shows, which was free for all to enjoy.

aquarium , daydream island

The 10:00 am fish feeding was presented by one of the living reef staff, who was an actual marine biologist! While they went through some of the hundreds of species of fish and coral in the living reef, large stingrays approached them for their breakfast, while slapping and playing about, vying for the number one spot in front of the food. After the informational talk, we decided to investigate the Living Reef Educational Centre, a mini aquarium complete with a touch tank, movie room, and lots of information about the inhabitants. This is where you can also book some of their private experiences, including the stingray splash and a guided snorkel in the 1.5 million litre tank. The marine biologists then told us about another hidden feature, and we crossed the grounds over to what looked like a mini reception with a staircase going underground. When we arrived at the bottom of the spiral staircase, we were transported to what seemed like another world, in the underground (and water!) viewing room, where a giant wall of glass was the only thing separating us from the Great Barrier Reef in the flesh! This artificial reef is teeming with life, from potato cod to giant stingrays, and even painted crayfish all harmoniously co-inhabiting this incredible display. We could even see the guided snorkel tour from underneath, making for a truly different perspective. You'll find most of the 'Great 8' on Daydream Island, making it an incredible Great Barrier Reef experience.

aquarium, daydream

After losing ourselves in this underwater paradise, we had worked up quite the appetite, and realised we hadn’t even seen the rest of the island yet!  There was plenty of time for some refuelling we decided, before exploring the rest of the island.

Beach Front Dining

Included in our full-day tour was a 2-course lunch at Inkstone, formerly Mermaids restaurant, which is a modern alfresco restaurant right on the beach and by the pool. From the restaurant, you can see people already diving straight into the non-motorised water sports available. While we chose from their intriguing menu, we enjoyed watching paddleboards, kayaks, and even small Hobie catamarans setting out from the beach, while little ones played in the pool nearby. The lunch left nothing to be desired, and local delicacies like Morton bay bug linguine and smoked crocodile woodfired pizzas were a perfect blend of flavour, leaving us wishing we had left room for dessert!

inkstone, restaurant, daydream island

After lunch, it was time to don our bathers and check out some of the water activities, with the sun now out in full force. After a quick dip in the pool, we saw the swim-up bar was calling our name… But decided there was still too much to do before indulging in some of their signature cocktails.

pool daydream island

Discover Lover's Cove

After hiring some snorkel gear, we took the winding scenic walk over to Lover’s Cove, where we heard some of the best offshore fringing reefs lie awaiting discovery at low tide. Along the way, we spotted several wallabies lounging like swimsuit models in the shade of a palm tree, very much at home on this island in the wild. Lovers cove certainly didn’t disappoint, and we were met with dozens of local fusiliers and diamond headed mullet swarming around us while we explored the bommies and shelves of the colourful reef.

On Walkabout

On our way back up, we decided to take a detour when we noticed a rainforest walk to our right - Luckily we had our small bag with us, so being able to swap our fins for walking shoes allowed us to not miss a beat on this island full of surprises! The 20-30 minute walk brought us to some incredible vantage points of the surrounding bays and islands, with benches and informational signs posted throughout the moderate bush track. When we arrived at the end, we realised we had no idea where we were, until we spotted a quaint looking chapel, almost completely made of glass overlooking more stunning views, and even more lounging wallaby models!

wallabies, daydream island

As we kept on, we passed the south end of the island, where there were more infinity pools, a long beach scattered with sun loungers and strategically placed hammocks amongst the palm trees. It was as if anyone could have their own private spot on the edge of the beach. Tempted to stop for a nap, we kept strolling on to find a large outdoor movie screen, right on the ocean shore! A passing staff member told us they hold movie nights throughout the week, and you could even book a couple of chairs and a bottle of bubbles, making us regret not booking to stay overnight. They kindly offered us a personal buggy lift back to the main resort area, where we decided we had finally earned that cocktail. Tucked away we found a hidden heated spa in the shade and sipped our prized pina coladas while taking in the sounds of the birds echoing from the natural rainforest surrounding us.

cocktail, daydream island

After waking from our own daydream, we realised it was almost time to depart, and we suddenly wished we had gotten lost on our bushwalk and were forced to stay overnight. Unfortunately, we managed to change and make our way back to the last ferry back to the mainland in time, and waved goodbye to what was surely not the last time to this incredibly understated island, knowing full well we would be back again soon-This time overnight!

The National Park Service director, Charles F. Sams III, praised the surge of interest in “learning our shared American story throughout the hidden gems of the National Parks System.”

Expecting an even greater turnout in 2024, the Park Service and Recreation.gov , the booking platform for federal land reservations, have implemented new measures to streamline the park experience, manage overcrowding and safeguard the environment.

More parks are requiring reservations

To better avoid congested trails, packed parking lots and overflowing trash cans, additional parks are joining Rocky Mountain , Arches and Glacier National Parks this year in requiring day-use permits, timed entries and other reservations for travelers who wish to visit, particularly during peak hours, holidays and the parks’ high seasons. Yosemite National Park is reinstating a timed-entry system it instituted in 2020, but paused in 2022.

Many park enthusiasts expressed mixed feelings about the reservation policies, with some lamenting a lack of first-come, first-served campsites while others find comfort in knowing they have a confirmed booking. As nearly 75 percent of visitors each year descend on national parks from May to October (and often on weekends), park officials stand by the system.

“In some parks, the level of demand is exceeding the capacity for which infrastructure was designed or is outpacing the National Park Service’s ability to sustainably support visitation,” said Kathy Kupper, a public affairs specialist for the service. “This trend is resulting in the need to explore new strategies to protect natural and cultural resources and provide opportunities for safe and meaningful visitor experiences.”

It can be confusing.

New to implementing timed-entry reservations for vehicles is Mount Rainier National Park , in Washington, for its popular Paradise and Sunrise Corridors during certain times in the summer season. Reservations cost $2, are valid for one day and must be purchased along with the park ticket, but do not apply for visitors with wilderness permits or camping or lodge reservations. Similar vehicle reservations are now required for certain periods for viewing the sunrise at Haleakalā National Park in Maui, Hawaii , and driving the Cadillac Summit Road in Maine’s Acadia National Park .

Visitors wishing to hike Old Rag Mountain in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park must obtain a day-use ticket between March 1 and Nov. 30, and in Zion National Park, in Utah, hikers wishing to visit Angels Landing , the dramatic 1,488-foot-tall rock formation, also need to purchase a permit. Fees range from $1 to $6, in addition to the parks’ entrance fees.

As each destination is managed differently, check the park’s webpage for the type of reservation required. Although most bookings can be made through Recreation.gov, some sites, such as Muir Woods National Monument, use a different system.

New features on Recreation.gov

In 2023, Recreation.gov reported that more than 4 million camping reservations and 2 million timed-entry reservations were booked online, and 1.5 million permits were issued. Some 2.9 million new users signed up for the site. With its expanding user base, the booking platform has added 58 reservable national park locations — including 17 campgrounds — such as Central Avenue Walk-in Sites at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Bluff Hike In Camping in South Carolina’s Congaree National Park.

Recreation.gov has also improved an alerts feature, piloted in July 2023, that can notify users through email or mobile push notifications when a sold-out campsite becomes available. After Recreation.gov notifies you of availability, you must book the campsite yourself online — and quickly, as you’ll be shown how many other people (possibly hundreds) have received the same alert.

While its customer support center and mobile app are still only available in English, Recreation.gov recently introduced a Spanish language translation option. The Park Service partners with Latino Conservation Week , which hosts nationwide hikes and events on environmental education and in-park stewardship, and will celebrate its 10th year in September.

A limit to the annual America the Beautiful pass

The 2024 America the Beautiful pass no longer allows two owners. The annual interagency pass, which costs $80 and covers the entrance fees for more than 2,000 federal recreation sites (of which roughly 100 do not charge for admission year-round), is now marked by a single signature line on the back of the card. The pass owner must show I.D. and be present with any accompanying travelers wishing to access the park with the pass. (Annual passes issued in 2023 will still be valid until their expiration date.) The pass covers all passengers in a vehicle — up to four adults, and children under 16 are admitted free — or up to four cyclists riding together. Active military or veterans and people with permanent disabilities are eligible for a free lifetime pass; 4th grade students may receive a free annual pass; and senior citizens may purchase a $20 annual pass or pay $80 for a lifetime pass.

At the parks, more accessible features, E.V. chargers and new lodging

To better protect against global warming, the Park Service is putting more than $65 million from the Inflation Reduction Act and Great American Outdoors Act into climate mitigation and ecosystem restoration.

Using $15.9 million budgeted for zero-emission vehicle deployment, charging capacity and infrastructure, the Park Service is prioritizing a reduction in carbon emissions, said Mr. Sams, by installing new electric-vehicle charging stations and running electric buses.

An interactive online locator tool created in 2023 shows E.V. charging stations throughout 27 national parks and the type of chargers available. In addition to the tool, every national park page displays alerts on road closures, parking lot capacities, construction work and other incidents.

Mr. Sams also said the Park Service is investing $1.3 billion from the Great American Outdoors Act to improve accessibility features, ranging from a new A.D.A.-compliant visitor center at Morristown National Historic Park in New Jersey to new beach wheelchairs at Sleeping Bear Dunes , Channel Islands and Virgin Islands National Parks . Each destination’s website has an accessibility tab to help visitors plan their trip, and Recreation.gov now has a search filter on its homepage to make it easier to locate accessible accommodations.

New lodging options now available across the country include the Flamingo Lodge , which opened outside Everglades National Park last fall with 24 guest rooms built from repurposed shipping containers. In March, along the southeastern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Cataloochee Ranch reopened with 11 renovated cabins and a new restaurant. This spring, the Clubhouse Hotel & Suites will welcome its first guests in Rapid City, S.D., the closest major town to Badlands National Park , and opening in May in Idaho is the Yellowstone Peaks Hotel , a 30-minute-drive from Yellowstone National Park. This fall, California-bound travelers planning a visit to General Sherman, the largest known tree on Earth, might book at AutoCamp Sequoia , just outside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park .

Also in California: Those who don’t score a highly coveted (and contentious) spot at the newly reopened High Sierra Camps in Yosemite could book Wildhaven Yosemite in Mariposa, which offer more affordable rates, hiking trails and views of the Sierra Nevadas. Reservations for its first season are available beginning May 1.

Celebrating milestones and a new free entrance day

On the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, visitors can pay tribute to African American heritage at over 100 parks , including the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C., Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument , and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail . This year also marks 100 years since Indigenous people were recognized as United States citizens. Although many parks have Indigenous programming , Mr. Sams, who is the first Native American to serve as N.P.S. director , suggested visiting Hopewell Cultural Historical Park in Ohio and Whitman Mission Historic National Historic Site in Washington, where he recently brought his daughter.

“In order to celebrate the diversity that makes our country great, we must share the complete story of America, which includes both the successes and challenges encountered on the way to form a more perfect union,” Mr. Sams said.

Juneteenth National Independence Day is the National Park Service’s newest free entrance day . Visitors can also take advantage of free admission on April 20, the first day of National Park Week; Aug. 4, the four-year anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act ; Sept. 28 on National Public Lands Day ; and Nov. 11 for Veterans Day .
