The architectural boat cruise in NYC is organized by the architectural group, AIANY, which has the goal to tell the many stories behind the buildings of New York.    It starts on Pier 62 at Chelsea Piers and is beautifully located on the Hudson River. From an English-speaking guide, you’ll learn interesting facts about the various structures you’ll see on the tour (there are over 150).

Where can we Purchase Tickets for the Boat Tour?

We bought the tickets for the boat tour earlier on this site because the seats are limited and the tour is very popular. We also printed out the vouchers for the tickets on our mobile phone. At the ticket counter, they were then exchanged for the real tickets – but only after the presentation of our ID’s. Make sure to bring an ID or you won’t be able to get on the boat.

Boarding is about 5 minutes before departure. Because the weather was so good, we sat down immediately on the benches on the outer deck. But you can also take a seat in the ship. Since we did not have sunscreen we were rewarded with a great sunburn the next day.

Our Impression of the Manhattan II

The ship itself is not one of the classic modern sightseeing boats, but a beautiful wooden ship and exudes the charm of the 1920s. It’s definitely a unique boat and an experience one must have.

On the Hudson River to the Statue of Liberty

Once you start going further from the shore, you will start to see the many skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan . The One World Trade Center is the one that you’ll notice right away. During the boat cruise, you’ll rock with the waves, passing by Hudson Yards , home to New York’s highest observation deck, Chelsea Piers, the Hudson River Park and Brookfield Place on North Cove Marina. The southern tip of Manhattan, as you can see in the pictures, is really impressive. Then we went on towards the Statue of Liberty – which we enjoyed with a glass of white wine on hand.  The first drink is included in the price of the tour!

East River to the northern tip of Manhattan, Brooklyn & Bronx

The architecture boat cruise in NYC is in the middle of the trip at this point. You’ll be traveling under 20 bridges like the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge. Some are over 20 years old! You’ll reach the northern tip of Manhattan Island, as well as Roosevelt Island and the United Nations building. The landscape changes every 10 minutes. When the East River meets the Hudson River you’ll notice that the metropolis of New York City is nowhere in sight.

George Washington Bridge and Hudson River

From here, the architectural boat tour will start to head back to the starting point. On the way, you’ll pass the George Washington Bridge, The Cloisters, Riverbank State Park, and the Cruise Ship Pier. If you are lucky, you can also see one of the big ships at the terminal.

Classic Harbor Line – AIANY Around Manhattan Architecture Tour

Price: Adults from $112; students from $82 Duration: 2.75 hours

Admire some of the city's most significant architecture on this nearly three-hour cruise from Classic Harbor Line. With a member of the American Institute of Architects as your guide, you'll spot towering residential buildings, Little Island at Pier 55 and more. Guides will also discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic will have lasting impacts on cities. Designed for photographers, the Adventure Sightseeing Tour takes riders on a U.S. Navy-designed boat past key city sights like the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and Chelsea Piers, among others. The captain stops the boat multiple times throughout the 60-minute narrated cruise for photo opportunities. The two-hour cruise, which takes passengers past top New York City landmarks, also includes a buffet lunch, a DJ and games. Ticket prices vary by the day; expect to pay at least $63 for adults and around $51 for kids children ages 3 to 12. Children 2 and younger ride for free. Cruises depart weekly, though specific times and days vary. Bateaux New York also operates brunch and dinner cruises.

A native New Yorker, John holds a professional degree in Architecture from Pratt Institute.  Over the past three decades he has taught courses focusing on architectural history and planning history at Parsons School of Design, The Cooper Union, Fashion Institute of Technology, Stern College for Women, and Manhattan College. John has designed tour programs and lectures for many of New York City’s institutions and corporations. His exhibitions and articles have revealed history and preservation issues to a broad audience.  John admits to a special affinity for New York’s extensive infrastructure as well as its Mid-Century Modern heritage.   Book John K for his Special Bridge & Infrastructure Tour

As a founding co-chair of the AIANY Architecture Tour program, Arthur regularly guides the Around Manhattan, Lower Manhattan and Freshkills Park Boat Tours.  In 2012 he launched a Featured Guide Series to invite recognized NYC waterfront experts to share firsthand insights pertaining to infrastructure, ecology and post-Sandy resilient design.  Through the AIA, Arthur also leads walking tours in Lower Manhattan exploring new buildings within Historic Districts.  Arthur is a native New Yorker whose early professional experience at a number of NY firms fostered a deep interest in the City’s built environment.  In 1998 he co-founded Fink & Platt Architects, an award winning firm, that creates highly crafted spaces, integrating a sustainable approach to architecture, restoration, and interiors.  The firm completed a renovation and addition for the Jewish Braille Institute, the master plan for Coney Island USA as well as numerous residential projects in NYC and the surrounding areas.

Doug is a native New Yorker and a graduate of Vassar College with a B.A. in history.  He is a licensed New York City tour guide who specializes in tours that feature the architecture and history of the city. Since 2012, when joining the Architecture Tour Committee, Doug has been conducting the AIANY Around Manhattan Boat Tours.  Doug highlights not only the recent and classic architectural gems but also the many industrial artifacts and structures that are seen from the boats as we circumnavigate Manhattan. In addition, he conducts architecture tours of the 9/11 Memorial and World Trade Center for the AIANY Chapter walking tour program. Doug’s Lower Manhattan walking tour focuses on changes in urban planning theories and practices from the mid-20th Century to the present that guided the development of the original Twin Towers and the new World Trade Center complex in starkly different directions.

John guides the AIANY Around Manhattan Architecture Tour and developed the Around Manhattan Historic Architecture Tour. A licensed NYC Sightseeing Guide, he leads walking tours for the AIA, the Municipal Art Society and private clients. He is the President of DOCOMOMO New York/Tri-State, a local chapter of an international organization devoted to preserving Modern architecture. He co-chaired the AIA New York Chapter Historic Buildings Committee from 2011 until 2015. He was Director of Business Development at Gwathmey Siegel & Associates and Associate at Beckhard Richlan Szerbaty & Associates. A resident of New York City since 1990, John received a B.A. in Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley and studied real estate development at Columbia University. In 2016 the AIANY honored him with the Harry B. Rutkins Award in recognition of “his continuing work to raise the public’s awareness of architecture.”

Thomas Mellins is an architectural historian, author, and exhibition curator. Mr. Mellins recently co-authored New York Rising: An Illustrated History from the Durst Collection, and is the co-author, with Robert A.M. Stern and others, of three volumes in a book series on the architecture and urbanism of New York City: New York 1880, New York 1960, and New York 1930, which was nominated for a National Book Award, and has written for the New York Times, Architectural Record, and other publications.  In addition to lecturing extensively, he has served on design juries at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and has taught at Parsons/The New School of Design and the New York School of Interior Design . In 1999 Mayor Rudolph Giuliani designated Mr. Mellins a Centennial Historian of New York City. 

Mr. Mellins has organized exhibitions on a wide variety of architectural and cultural subjects, including most recently: “Gay Gatherings: Philip Johnson, David Whitney and the Modern Arts” for the National Trust for Preservation. Among the many exhibitions Mr. Mellins has curated for the Museum of the City of New York are “Affordable New York: A Housing Legacy,” and “The American Style: Colonial Revival and the Modern Metropolis,” for which he co-wrote a companion book.  Mr. Mellins has curated numerous exhibitions for the Center for Architecture in New York, including: “Open to the Public: Civic Space Now,” “The Edgeless School: Design for Learning,” and “A Space Within: The National September 11 Memorial and Museum.”  Mr. Mellins  co-curated “House & Home,” a long-term exhibition at the National Building Museum, and  was the curator of “The New York Public Library: Celebrating 100 Years,” which attracted over 800,000 visitors to become the most heavily attended exhibition in the library’s history.

Andrew is a licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide, geographer, and museum professional who has extensive experience working with cultural and industrial sites along New York City’s waterfront. Since 2009, Andrew and his team at Turnstile Tours & Studio—a tour company and consultancy that works with nonprofits, cultural organizations, and museums around the world—have developed and operated tours of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Brooklyn Army Terminal, Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, and New York City’s Public Markets. During this time he has witnessed a remarkable transformation of the architecture and open space on New York’s waterfront. With his longstanding interest in architecture and deep knowledge of the city’s built environment and history, Andrew joined the AIANY Architecture Tour team in 2022. He also brings special expertise about the city’s industrial architecture, as well as its maritime, military, and labor history. His tours highlight the waterfront infrastructure that keeps the city working, and he is also very interested in public and social housing, examples of which are very prominent on the Around Manhattan Architecture Boat Tour.

7 things that might surprise you about the Chicago Architecture Boat Tour

T here are plenty of ways to take in the sights, sounds (and smells) of Chicago, but you don't necessarily have to be on land to do that.

And you don't have to be a tourist, either.

In fact, one of the most beloved ways — among locals and visitors alike — to experience city is by journeying across the Chicago River and Lake Michigan while a tour guide talks about buildings and regales you on the untold story of Mrs. O'Leary's cow.

In other words: a Chicago Architecture Boat Tour.

"As you're going up and down the Chicago River and on Lake Michigan, you're seeing the city’s evolving architecture, which is changing every year" said Andrew Sargis, director of sales and marketing for Wendella Tours and Cruises .

Wendella, billed as Chicago's "original" architecture tour, in 1935 gave its first architecture tour of the city from a wooden diesel yacht out on Navy Pier, Sargis said. Now, upwards of 20 architecture tours are offered daily, with more on the weekends. On average, Wendella tours see roughly 100,000 passengers each month over the summer, Sargis said.

And though the majority of guests on any given Wendella architecture tour are tourists, Sargis said, locals take them, too.

"I was surprised when I first started, we get a lot of repeat locals," Bobby Scheffle, a Wendella tour guide told NBC Chicago. "And always there's a lot of local people that come on when they have guests visiting them in town. They like to show off the city this way."

But there's something else about the experience that makes it so very Chicago.

"I think it is really unique to experience the city from a boat on a river, because we think about other big cities in the United States -- there aren't many that have a river that go right through downtown," Scheffle said. "You feel like you're in the city, you hear the noise, and you see the buildings and all that."

Whether you're taking the ride for the first time or the 50th, bringing out-of-town guests out for a memorable activity or just itching to be a tourist in your own city, here are seven things to know about the Chicago Architecture Boat Tour.

Will weather stop a tour from running?

Wendella's architecture tours run year-round, Sargis said, although "weather is a factor."

Weather events like ice on the river or significant snowfall can impact operations, Sargis said, but they typically don't, since the Chicago River -- a federal waterway -- must remain navigable year-round.

While Wendella's boats do have climate-controlled indoor lounges, tours during the winter may run at limited times. But rain, snow, extreme heat or wind, unflappable Chicagoans still show up.

"We went on drizzly day a few years ago," Kathy Rambo wrote on NBC Chicago's Facebook page. "There were only about 10 of us on the boat!

And most often, the tour will run — rain or shine — so don't hesitate to bring a raincoat.

"I have certainly [given tours] under thunderstorms and downpours, and I've gotten drenched sometimes," Scheffle said. "I've never had a tour get canceled because no one bought a ticket. There's always someone wanting to come out here in the rain or the cold."

What's the best time of year (or day) to go?

It depends on when exactly your favorite time of the year is, and what you're hoping to see.

For Sargis, it's late summer. "There's this point of time in September when the weather is beautiful, but there's not that summer rush."

There are other times that Chicagoans may want to consider, too.

"St. Patrick's Day Celebration when they dye the river, and any Wednesday or Saturday night [over the summer], watching the fireworks over Lake Michigan , especially if you're local" Sargis said.

During the summer months, Wendella's tours run start as early as 9 a.m., with the day's final tour not ending until 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., Scheffle said, "so if you want to come for a ride to see the city lights, you can come late, and it's also beautiful, just a little more difficult to see the colors on the buildings if that's what you want to see."

Laura Pubins, who lives in a suburb outside of Chicago, agrees.

"My favorite one was when we were on a boat at sunset," Pubins wrote to NBC Chicago on Facebook. "It was an awesome new view of the city."

What's the most photogenic spot on the tour?

For Sargis, it's "anything out on Lake Michigan," with the skyline in the background.

On the river though, there's one moment that captures the city best, Scheffle said, no matter what time of day you're taking the trip.

"The best place to take a photo on the 90-minute river tour is when we come up the south branch from Chinatown," Scheffle said. "That's the best place because you get the whole skyline from the south. It's really beautiful."

For locals though, it may not be what you're looking at, so much as how you're looking at it.

"You're looking at [the city] from underneath," said Chicago resident Nick Pappas, 55, who recently found himself on a 90-minute river tour. "It's just a different perspective on the river that you don't get on the street level. As amazing as that sounds, you're only, like, 20 feet down, but it gives you a whole different perspective."

What does the training for a tour guide look like?

According to Sargis, all Wendella tour guides are trained in-house -- and the spots are competitive.

"There's high demand," Sargis said, of the position. "There are more people that want to be tour guides than space available. It's certainly a popular job, and people want to do it." While the tour guide of any given architecture tour isn't made public, many people do request certain ones for private events, Sargis said.

For the tours, there's a general script, with highlights that must be mentioned, Sargis said. But improvisation, along with sharing personal history is encouraged, too.

"All of the tour guides have their own experience in the city, and will add parts of their history in it," Sargis said. "We have a tour guide that is a retired police officer, and he will interject anecdotes form his career. We have a tour guide that's a Vietnam War Veteran, and when we go by the Vietnam War Memorial, he will always discuss the importance of it to him."

For Scheffle, the training included joining multiple tours a week for two weeks and flashcards.

"For a while, I, just drove Uber and Lyft," Scheffle said. "And then, I remembered that I really liked Chicago. I like learning fun facts about it. And there are people in the city that have that as a job -- to tell people fun facts about Chicago and I started looking into tourism jobs in the city."

What's the most common question tour guides get?

Believe it or not, it's not always about The Great Chicago Fire , or Mrs. O'Leary and her cow, at least on Scheffle's tours.

"My favorite thing on the tour that happens is probably when little kids ask questions," Scheffle said. "The common question that a kid will ask, because I talk about the tallest building, second tallest building, third tallest building, a lot of times a kid will ask what's the shortest building in Chicago? Which I don't have a good answer for."

Are you supposed to tip your guide?

"It's up to the discretion of the client," Sargis said. "I would say a lot of our passengers do tip our tour guides."

What's the absolute best part of the tour?

Sure the tour is photogenic, and the city's history is fascinating. And though some may go on the tour to find out what buildings are new, others prefer to think about the old.

"My favorite building to talk about is probably the Board of Trade building," Scheffle said. "Just because I remember walking by it much younger and always, I remember, really being impressed by it, thinking was such a cool big city building."

For a local on the tour, the memories are nice. But a day out on the water in Chicago is just hard to beat.

"It's great. I don't have to work," said Pappas, who has lived in the city for 55 years. "Every time, it's a little treat to go down the river."
