new york helicopter tour manhattan

This was the highlight of our trip to New York to celebrate our daughter’s 18th and a ‘big birthday’ of mine. We were lucky to have Andy Woods as our pilot that day - I was a wee bit worried but needn’t have been. He was so reassuring and such great fun! Made it a totally unforgettable experience. The views of the City were stunning and daughter is saving hard to return and do it all again as soon as possible!

new york helicopter tour manhattan

I bought my husband and I the helicopter flight as a wedding gift and it was one of the first things we did in New York. I was nervous to begin with, but I sat with the pilot, Andrew, who calmed my nerves. The flight was absolutely amazing and the best way to see New York! Andrew the pilot was so friendly and you could tell he loves his job which made it an even better flight.

new york helicopter tour manhattan

We were on a sightseeing holiday in New York and decided to take a helicopter ride and all I can say is WOW! From the guys on the ground to Andy, our pilot, everyone is there to make sure you have a memorable experience and all take the time to chat and laugh with you. An outstanding experience from beginning to end and it’s obvious from talking with Andy that he absolutely loves his job!

new york helicopter tour manhattan

This was an incredible highlight of mine and my sister's recent trip to NYC. Andrew our pilot was brilliant, so friendly, funny and pointed out all the best sights across the city. Both of us had great views and the experience was great. The guys at the base were quite friendly and I also got a great photo from the experience. This was a gift from my sister for my birthday and it definitely made my day and I'll not forget this for a long time!!

Flying over Manhattan, new york city helicopter tour price

You’ll also love taking an NYC helicopter tour at night , as this is when the Big Apple really comes alive. You’ll still be able to identify the popular NY landmarks, but it’s a very unique experience.

Tips for choosing an NYC helicopter ride

Now that you know the best helicopter tours in New York , here are some tips to help you choose the perfect fit. Keep these in mind as you plan your ideal helicopter ride in NY .

  • Double-check the departure point for the tour since most heliports are located outside of NYC.
  • Wear comfortable clothes, sneakers, and a jacket. The sun is more intense in a New York helicopter , so don’t forget to wear sunscreen and sunglasses. Also, don’t forget your camera!
  • Pay attention to the check-in time, which is different from the departure time . You should arrive early so you can go over the safety instructions and flight procedures.
  • Consider any extra fees , such as tips for the pilot and fuel surcharges.
  • Keep in mind that doors-off flights cost more. Also, sunset helicopter tours in NYC are very popular, so they tend to be more expensive and fill up quickly.

My experience flying over New York by helicopter

During one of our trips to New York, we decided to try a Manhattan sightseeing helicopter tour . This doors-off flight piqued our interest, and it ended up being one of the coolest things we did during our trip.

This NYC helicopter experience was a photographer’s dream, allowing us to take some of the best pictures of New York from above. Plus, since we were flying over New York in a doors-off chopper, I felt like I was floating above the city. It was quite an adrenaline rush, but I felt safe the entire time because we were securely strapped in, and the pilot and crew went over all the safety protocols before we boarded the aircraft.

Lower Manhattan from above, private helicopter tour nyc for 2

Our New York City helicopter tour lasted about 20 minutes, and I thought it was well-priced for such a breathtaking experience. We flew over New York Harbor and saw the full scope of Manhattan while our guide pointed out important landmarks. Seeing huge skyscrapers like the Empire State Building and One World Observatory from above was awesome and provided a unique viewpoint that we wouldn’t get any other way.

I also saw just how large Central Park is, and I captured incredible views of Battery Park, the waterfront, and Liberty and Ellis Islands. Seeing the different NYC bridges connecting to Manhattan all at once from above was an awe-inspiring experience, too.

If you’re still on the fence after reading my New York helicopter review , I say go for it! You won’t regret it!

So worth it! Went for my boyfriends birthday and he loved flying the helicopter and I enjoyed sitting in the back watching him fly and the beautiful views! Our instructor was so nice and made our experience very enjoyable! Also, brand new 2018 helicopter made it even nicer. Would definitely do again! (Google)

Wings Air Did Not Disappoint

Didn’t really know what to expect since it was our first time flying in a helicopter, but Wings Air did not disappoint. The place is easy to get to, the beautiful, clean, staff is extremely friendly and accommodating and the flying experience was amazing! Our pilot, Johnathan made us feel extremely comfortable and safe on our 30-minute ride to the city. I was nervous going into it but his smooth sailing and reassurance relaxed me so I could experience the incredible views. 110% recommend going with Wings Air! (Google)

A Perfect Way To Start Our Recent New York Trip

A perfect way to start our recent New York trip. We took a helicopter with Lance from Midtown to Woodbury Common, with an NYC city tour included. Save yourself some time getting up there and catch some amazing views of the city at the same time! (Yelp)

Thank You Wings Air Helicopter Team

We had a lot of luggage to load as well but he and his team managed to fit it all in. Our little one then started singing a nursery rhyme to keep herself calm, Anthony knew the words and immediately joined in, it was magical our daughter, now calm, and the pilot singing as we took off. And what a flight it was, over the city, all the usual sights then up sate. Thank you, Anthony, Anna and all the Wings Helicopter team for your incredible professionalism and expertise, we were safe in your hands and can’t wait to fly with you again. (TripAdvisor)

Special Surprise Trip

We arranged a special surprise trip with Wings Helicopters for our 2 young daughters on Christs Eve last. Its was to be a tour of New York City, then a short flight to our final destination up sate. When we arrived at the Heliport on East 30th and told the girls our youngest burst into tears as she was so nervous of flying. Anthony, our pilot, took her in hand and was absolutely superb. (Trip Advisor)

The Flight Was Amazing

This was so much better than I expected!! We were picked up and driven to a lovely private airport with a nice waiting area where we were greeted by our pilot and his colleague who made us feel at ease. The flight was amazing and the pictures you take are out of this world. The pilot, Nick, will accommodate you in any way he can so you get the perfect picture and he has a great sense of humor! I would definitely do this again!! Thank you. (TripAdvisor)

We tried a 10-minute helicopter service that takes you from JFK to Manhattan for £162

Fancy touching down into New York in style? Helicopter company Blade has partnered with US budget airline JetBlue to offer discounted chopper rides into Manhattan for loyal costumers.

Metro.co.uk was one of the first to check the new service out…

I’ve lived in New York for a number of years but arriving by helicopter made for my most dramatic and time efficient city entrances yet.

I was invited to test out Blade’s new helicopter service in conjunction with JetBlue. Flights run from $195 (£162) per person, but for loyal JetBlue customers there are significant reductions on offer.

The budget airline started running direct flights from London to New York this spring with the equivalent of a business class cabin called Mint available.

Some of the perks of JetBlue’s Mint service include lay-flat beds, eco-friendly amenity kits, delicious menus curated by some of some of New York’s hottest hipster spots, a great cocktail selection and free high speed WiFi, which extends through to economy too.

After touching down into Terminal 5 of JFK airport – JetBlue’s flagship terminal -and passing through security and luggage reclaim, we were met by a Blade representative who swiftly shuttled us towards a luxury vehicle for a short ride to the helicopter terminal.

The day we landed, the weather was a little iffy with winds and a sudden deluge of rain, so we were shown to a waiting room while the storm passed.

After a 15-minute wait, during which we necked a couple of coffees from the free-to-use machine, we were directed towards the runway with one other passenger.

Luckily our luggage was light enough to fit in the chopper but if your bags are too big, Blade can arrange a drop off for you either by car or by another helicopter later in the day.

Our fellow passenger revealed he was from Boston and that he uses Blade’s helicopter service twice a week to attend meetings in New York after taking short internal flight.

‘Who wants to deal with road traffic!’ he said with a grin.

He also put our fears about the weather to rest, adding: ‘I’ve flown in way worse, you’ll be fine! Just enjoy it – it’s a great way to see the city.’

The three of us were shown into the helicopter and told to put ear defenders on to block out the noise of the blades. The headsets came with microphones so we could continue talking to each other during the flight.

After a brief safety briefing, the helicopter gradually started its ascent and it was full throttle forwards towards the Big Apple.

The helicopter (a Bell 407GXP) features floor to ceiling glass panels so you can soak up the magnificent views of the suburbs below.

By far the best part of the ride is when you navigate New York’s peninsula hovering by the One World Observatory tower, the Statue of Liberty and more as you go.

While the journey only lasts 10 minutes or so, it makes for a very memorable flight and something you’ll be able to tell friends and family about for years to come.

Blade’s helicopter base is at West 30th St so you come in just below the Empire State building and close to the buzzing Hudson Yards complex.

Despite the windy weather it was a soft landing and on touching down we were escorted to the Blade waiting lounge.

In line with the company’s hip and cool ethos, the lounge is like a slick 60s lair complete with an open bar, plush couches and neon lights.

Blade can arrange car services to continue your journey onwards.

Our Uber was a little delayed which meant we went for a second round of wine and the jolly bar attendant gave us special branded Blade sippy cups to take our beverages with us.

Helicoptering into New York will be a trip I will always remember.

Nothing beats the feeling of skipping grid locked traffic below and soaring around at the same height as skyscrapers. With one-way Uber trips to JFK now around around £120, Blade’s service is definitely an option worth exploring.

Top tips to doing New York in style

Where to stay.

Baccarat Hotel

Ready yourself to be swept into a world of grandeur at the Baccarat Hotel , which opened in 2015 as the first venue from France’s eponymous crystal brand.

Boasting a prime position in front of the MoMA museum in midtown, this palatial spot certainly promises to up your hotel game.

From the moment you step into the elevators, the attention to detail shines through, with ornate wood paneling and huge mirrors setting the tone.

Then, in the lobby, custom made chandeliers hanging from the triple heiling ceilings further the wow factor.

The interiors are immaculate from start to finish, with ripe red roses, glistening crystal, swathes of marble and plush carpeting being among the running themes.

Despite its central location, sturdy soundproofing means you will quickly forget the hubbub outside.

As with the communal spaces, the 114 rooms and suites ooze refined luxury and standout features include high definition TVs cleverly hidden in the mirrors, minimalist four poster beds, feather quill pens instead of the standard hotel writing implements, and a champagne button on the phone for bubbles on demand.

Another twinkling gem within the hotel, is the state-of-the-art spa complex complete with steam facilities and comfortable cabanas around the pool.

After working up an appetite, the Grand Salon in the main lobby area serves up an array of delectable treats with a caviar service and mini lobster rolls being two of the house specialties. The perfectly curated cocktails are also not to be missed, with libations to suit all tastes and The Last Emperor certainly caters to high rollers, with the $1,780 blend featuring Nolet’s Reserve gin, chartreuse circa 1921-1926, cherry wood aged maraschino liqueur, lime, and a gold cherry.

While the Baccarat is one of the higher priced hotels in the city, it certainly makes for a very memorable night’s stay, if only for 24 hours. Or a stop at the bar could be an option, just for a taste of how the other half live…

Smyth Tribeca

Discreetly occupying the corner of one of Manhattan’s most stylish neighbourhoods, the Smyth Tribeca serves as a contemporary lair from which to explore the city.

The hotel, which reopened its doors in 2021 after a refurbishment and hiatus, offers 100 well-appointed accommodation units, including 88 guest rooms, eight alcove studio suites, and four premier suites.

All of the rooms follow a neutral colour scheme, with various shades of grey seeping into the mix, and floor-to-ceiling windows offer top views of the city, with the One World Trade Center one of the most prized vistas. The king rooms offer plenty of space to play with, with desk areas, mini fridges, closet rails and sparkling tiled bathrooms.

On the facility side of things, the hotel’s ground floor is home to an atmospheric tavern serving an all day menu. The breakfasts here are some of the heartiest in the city, with a sizeable slab of avocado toast and eggs being the perfect way to fuel your day.

Come nightfall, there’s a decent selection of cocktails on offer, from a Rose Negroni to a Smyth Manhattan, and if you want to continue your night from the comfort of your room, you can take food and beverages with you. The perfect base for a low key romantic weekend getaway.

The William Vale

Standing proud on the edge of Williamsburg, The William Vale is one of Brooklyn’s most distinctive hotels.

The soaring tower, which looks like it is perched on stilts, opened in 2016 and it remains in high demand thanks to its incredible views of Manhattan and slick contemporary design.

All 183 rooms boast balconies, with the larger suites having full wraparounds to entertain friends and family.

Other perks of the accommodations include funky artworks, sweet smelling Le Labo products, plush robes and plenty of natural light thanks to floor to ceiling windows.

Guests also gain free access to the state-of-the-art fitness centre and the 60ft outdoor heated pool.

In terms of the dining options, the hotel scores top marks with a buzzing restaurant and bar on the rooftop with retractable glass doors, and an atmospheric Italian – Leuca – in the basement.

Both venues feature a delicious spread of dishes imagined by award winning chef Andrew Carmellini.

The rooftop venue on the 22nd floor – called Westlight – makes for a top place to soak up the sunset with a refreshing beverage to hand, while Leuca holds court as a more refined and less rowdy spot.

This is definitely a hotel which makes a lasting impression.

For a completely different New York experience, navigate your way over to 33 Seaport . This jewel box of a boutique hotel serves as a great base to explore the historic area, which once served as a fishing port.

Along with boasting a prime location, with cobbled streets on the doorstep and views of the Brooklyn Bridge, this red brick hotel scores top marks on the interior design side of things. From the moment you step into the lobby, the hotel oozes classic sophistication with polished veneer wood and low lighting.

This slick aesthetic continues through to the 66 rooms and suites. The higher category suites serve up plenty of space, with separate living rooms and marble clad bathrooms complete with tubs and showers.

The on-site restaurant Pearl is also not to be missed, with a quirky but delicious Korean influenced menu. Some of the must-tries include the wagyu cooked on a hot stone, the sourdough and the juicy K fried chicken.

On the drinks side of things, the cocktails are well worth sampling with soju – aka the Korean vodka – used to put a twist on the classics, warming old fashioneds to punchy negronis.

The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad

If you’re looking for an upscale spot in the heart of Manhattan, then this latest spot from Ritz-Carlton should do the job. The exquisitely designed sky-high tower serves up 219 guest rooms, 30 suites and the $20,000-a-night Ritz-Carlton Suite.

From the get-go, this hotel has a buzzing atmosphere, with an Instagrammable bar off the main lobby and an expansive restaurant masterminded by acclaimed Spanish chef José Andrés. Come nightfall, the rooftop is the place to be, with Andrés’ jewel box of a bar Nubeluz luring patrons from far and wide.

As with the rooms and other spaces in the hotel Nubeluz – which showcases impeccable interiors by Martin Brudnizki Design – serves up jawdropping views along with a fine array of artfully-presented cocktails.

Two of the must-try libations include the gin-based Floral Cloud and the Salt Air Margarita. Once you’re ready to turn in for the night, the Ritz-Carlton beds make for a very plush place to rest your head.

All of the rooms have top notch city views, warm gold-hued interiors, attractive Terrazzo marble bathrooms complete with steam showers and amenities by Dyptique. If you can, upgrade to the ‘club level’, with these rooms granting you access to the lounge, complete with a full bar and a bountiful array of delicious nibbles courtesy of chef Andrés.

In terms of facilities, there are four eating spaces in total, a spa with multipletreatment rooms, a sauna and steam room area and a 24-hour gym.

Refinery Hotel

Base yourself in the heart of Manhattan and soak up some of the city’s history at this slick design hotel. Housed inside a former hat factory, the Refinery’s 197 stylish rooms draw inspiration from the building’s storied past, with many original features retained.

Custom artworks, 12-foot-high ceilings and expansive windows provide that wow factor while comfort is another key factor here, with soft bed linens, comfy robes and sweet smelling Le Labo bath products making for a winning mix.

The Refinery has become a firm favourite among Instagrammers for its prime view of the Empire State Building from the rooftop restaurant and bar.

Come the summer months, this sky high venue makes for a great place to soak up the views while gorging on a selection of mouth watering treats with the juicy double patty burger and lobster roll highly recommended.

The cocktails also go down well, with an Old Fashioned menu to dip into. Zoom down to the ground floor restaurant Parker & Quinn for a more intimate dining experience.

Kasa Lantern Lower East Side

Live like a local by checking into this new apartment complex from Kasa . The hospitality company has a scattering of sites across the world and there’s different kind of accommodation types to suit all tastes.

What’s more it operates a virtual front desk service, so you can simply check in and check out of your place at the touch of a button with key codes and instructions efficiently delivered prior to your visit.

If you’re staying in the city with friends and family, the Kasa Lower East Side location has an awesome penthouse option. The double storey pad serves up two spacious bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen-cum-living room which opens out on to a fabulous balcony.

For longer-term stays Kasa apartments are particularly useful, as the kitchen option means you can rustle up your own meals.

In terms of location, the Lower East Side makes for a great area to explore, with dozens of bars and restaurants on the doorstep. If you prefer something more centrally located, Kasa has another location in Times Square. Rates start from just $200 a night.

citizenM New York Bowery Hotel

When it comes to affordability without sacrificing on quality, citizenM is a hotel brand that hits the mark every time.

The company has two locations in the city, also located in the Lower East Side and Times Square. The Lower East Side spot , slap bang on the Bowery, has rooms starting from just over $150.

As soon as you step into the sky-high hotel, you’re hit by citizenM’s trademark playfulness, with lipstick red interiors and funky artwork adorning the place.

The rooms are compact but perfect for a city break, with all the things you need, from a comfortable bed to a powerful shower to Instagrammable city views. Like all of the citizenMs, high-speed WiFi makes this a top spot for remote working and on the lower-ground level there is a sprawling communal space where you can tap away from dawn until dusk.

For when you’ve finished the working day, this stylish low-price hotel has a top notch rooftop bar. As a hotel guest you can access the lofty space with no reservation needed.

Floor-to-ceiling windows provide superb city views of the One World Trade Center and beyond, and in the summer months there is outdoor space so you can enjoy your cocktails while basking in the sunshine.

Equinox Hotel

Soak up magnificent views of the Hudson while keeping your fitness regime up by checking into the slick Equinox Hotel New York .

This upscale complex serves up everything from sophisticated suites to a state-of-the-art gym to a rooftop swimming pool. I checked into a premier king room with sweeping views over the Hudson River.

Some of the best features included a marble-clad bathroom with sweet-smelling Grown Alchemist products, an enormous bed, an easy-to-use iPad concierge system and electric black out blinds for the floor to ceiling windows.

For a spot of relaxation in the city after shopping until you drop, check into the hotel’s spa which offers a range of cutting-edge treatments. The cryogenic chamber certainly helps ward off a hangover, with your body submitted to temperatures below -50 degrees Celsius for three minutes while you listen to music of your choice.

On the dining front, the hotel’s Electric Lemon restaurant is a popular spot come day and night so it’s worth making a reservation prior to your stay, especially for dinner.

The Standard East Village

If you fancy a bar crawl before hitting the pillow, one of the best located hotels in Manhattan for a spot of revelry is The Standard East Village .

This hotel is located right next to Soho for the shops and the East Village for a run of the hipster bar scene.

Perks of the hotel include a secluded garden area and a retro-style restaurant serving up some of the best eggs and avocado on toast for breakfast.

Upgrade to a Junior Suite for top notch views of the city, a separate work space-cum-dressing area, and a tub in the bathroom.

One Night Standard

If you fancy spinning the wheel and upgrading your New York hotel experience at the click of a button, download the One Night Standard app.

The brand’s cutting edge last minute booking app, allows spontaneous, same-night reservations, at the lowest available rates, across The Standard portfolio – which includes The Standard, High Line and The Standard, East Village in New York – beginning at $179.

Originally launched in 2015, the app remains the only one it’s kind made by a hotel brand.

Beginning at 3pm each day, you are guaranteed immediate access to the best possible price and room type at any Standard hotel and the team will upgrade you if there are rooms still available.

While The Standard, East Village has more of a neighbourhood feels, The Standard, High Line puts you in the heart of the party-fuelled Meatpacking district and the hotel is home to one of the hottest clubs in town, Le Bain, which goes running until the early hours.

This iconic hotel is as playful as the other spots in The Standard portfolio, but the real clincher here are the views. Rooms in the 18-story building face gaze out towards the Hudson River and the Empire State Building, with a host of other Manhattan landmarks peppering the scene.

This is a hotel where you can stay put from dawn until dusk, with a wonderful indoor / outdoor dining space (The Standard Grill review further down), a gym, various work spaces, a buzzy beer garden and a rooftop bar for some intermittent breathers from the dance floor.

Rooms range from Standard Kings and Queens to One-Bedroom Suites. A top place for a night of revelry, with a discounted rate being even more of a reason to boogie on down.

Where to eat

To celebrate a special occasion or push the boat during your New York adventure, be sure to book a table at Le Coucou in advance. This atmospheric Soho spot, led by internationally acclaimed chef Daniel Rose, boasts a One Michelin star and on dining here it is easy to see why, with impeccable service, delectable French-inspired dishes and – so the waiter informed us – the ‘best steak tartare in the city.’

After trying Le CouCou’s lavish take on this simple dish, I can concur that it’s the best I have probably tasted in Manhattan and beyond. The steak tartare at Le Coucou comes served with a generous caviar topping and a quail’s egg yolk which daintily binds everything together.

Other must-tries at this candle-lit fine dining outpost include the creamy veal sweetbreads which come served in a small pan, the meaty Main lobster with sauce au poivre, and the duckling to share between two is a favourite among many. Oenophiles will be in heaven, as there’s a wine list of biblical proportions with a knowledgeable sommelier on hand to suggest pairings.

For dessert, the offerings are as equally as elegant as the savoury selection with the layered Marjolaine stack satisfying chocolate cravings and the lime sherbet and mint granita to finish things with a zing.

If you’re looking for an intimate date night, oozing with the romance of Italy complete with the finest pastas in Manhattan be sure to book a spot at Rezdora .

Open for both lunch and dinner, one of the buzziest spots to sit at this tucked away midtown eatery is at the bar, with bartenders whipping up delicious libations while the floor team saunter by with flavourful dishes by to the adjacent tables.

Masterminded by characterful chefs Stefano Secchi and David Switzer, the menu here is packed full of Italian flare and you’ll want to go back to work your way through all of the dishes one by one.

If you want the full spread, the pasta and wine tasting menu – with a version also on offer for vegetarians – is a great option or otherwise you can opt for a mix of dishes to share.

The ones to add to your order include the insanely moreish burrata ‘reale’ with hen of the woods mushrooms and black truffle shavings, the light and puffy gnocco fitto topped with melt-in-the-mouth prosciutto di parma, mortadella and pancetta and the highly photogenic fiori di granchio with crab, mascarpone and sungolds.

But Secchi’s standout signature dish – Grandma Walking Through Forest In Emilia – is the one that will get you returning, with a delightful posy of cappelletti verdi with roasted, sautéed leeks and black mushroom puree.

Finish things of with the torta d’oliva – a dessert which features four treats made with the finest of olive oils, from gelato to a moist round of cake. Oh, and martini lovers will want to add this restaurant’s Butcher’s Martini – made with a fun mix of prosciutto-washed vodka, cocchi americano, saline, basil, and olive oil – to their list for something deliciously different. A spot daring to turn the concept of pasta on its head.

American Cut

Meat lovers will be in their element at American Cu t. The cosy TriBeCa joint has a classy New York air about it from the moment you step inside, with exposed redbrick walls, low lighting, polished wood veneer tables and black leather upholstery. Settle in and let the restaurant team take care of you and guide you to your perfect cut of steak.

Be sure to arrive hungry, as the dishes here are hearty and pack a punch, both in terms of flavour and size. Some of the standout appetisers which have lured diners back for more than a decade include the chilli lobster which comes with ‘Texas toast’ to mop up the sauce and the unusual combination of bone marrow and escargot.

On to the main show, and there are more than 10 cuts of steak to choose from, with the rich accompaniments ranging from bone marrow to crab meat. As expected, American Cut’s wine list is extensive and the server will be more than happy to suggest a quaffable tipple. For martini aficionados, the ‘pickletini’ is a fun twist on the classic.

Caviar Russe

Since 1997, Caviar Russe in New York has been reeling in diners from far and wide thanks to its superior seafood and caviar offerings.

Topping things off, this upscale midtown spot led by executive chef Edgar Panchernikov was awarded a Michelin Star in 2014 and it remains the only caviar house to have this honour.

For a more intimate dining experience, be sure to book into the upstairs dining room, which comes complete with plush velvet upholstered booth seating, a mirrored wall, refined frescos and ornate cornicing.

There are just eight tables overlooking Madison Avenue, and the waiting team will make you feel like VIPs. Alternatively, the newer downstairs space has an equally luxe finish but it is a little more informal, with walk ins welcome and live music on certain nights.

Dip into the a la carte menu or the tasting menu is a great option if you’re venturing upstairs. Indulgence is the word of the day at Caviar Russe and even the butter you get with the fresh bread contains caviar in it… a complete must-try!

Other things you cannot leave without trying include the restaurant’s signature ‘cornet’ hand rolls, with one containing a decadent dollop of toro and foie gras.

Another thing loyal customers pop by for is the ‘golden egg’; an outrageously satisfying dish featuring a breadcrumbed runny egg topped with caviar, sitting amid a frothy cheese broth.

On the drinks side of things, the wine list is extensive with a fine selection of vintages and the martinis will certainly whet the appetite for a cornucopia of caviar.

Twinkling with colourful lights from the sidewalk, Sappe has quickly become the shiny new kid on the restaurant block.

Masterminded by the same team behind the award-winning Thai restaurant Soothr, this eatery serves up a similar spread of delicious Thai bites with some snazzier options to satisfy the Instagram crowd.

To start, the cocktail menu is well worth perusing, with one of the most popular tipples being the Keerati, as it comes served with a bubble gum emitting a puff of smoked rose water.

For mains, the menu can be intimidating, so ask your server to suggest a meze of treats. Real crowd pleasers include the creamy and spicy Khao Soi Gai Yang and the moreish pork spare ribs. Make sure to book in advance, as the cavernous restaurant quickly packs out with queues steadily forming out the door.

If you’re looking for cocktails to write home about along with a buzzing atmosphere that will make you hungry for more, be sure to book a spot at Dante .

This characterful spot on Macdougal Street, which opened in 1915 and boasts a second location in the West Village, has made its mark on the drinks scene with aficionados ranking it one of the best bars in the world, while the hearty Italian fare has made this a staple neighbourhood spot.

Come nightfall, this characterful place develops an inviting glow, with flickering candlelight and low lighting. Settle in for a sitting at the bar or cozy up around one of the tables.

On the drinks side of things, Negroni lovers will be in heaven with a spread of variations to pick from, with different gins and vermouths mixing things up a little.

The bar’s version of an old fashioned made from Knob Creek rye, Montenegro, salty honey and dale bitters also serves as the perfect winter warmer with a giant ice cube branded with ‘Dante’ playing to the Instagram crowd.

When it comes to food, Dante’s house made focaccia is to die for, along with the pastas, which change on a regular basis so the ingredients can match seasonal supplies.

If you have room to spare, the flourless chocolate cake makes for a moreishly hefty dessert, which you can bag up and take home if you can’t manage the whole wedge. The tiramisu is another crowd pleaser.

Café Carmellini

If you’re looking for a restaurant which promises to leave a grand impression, be sure to book in advance for a sitting at the highly sought-after Café Carmellini .

This grand dining hall at the heart of the One Fifth Hotel oozes decadence, with brushed gold finishings, peacocks-hued upholstery, towering indoor plants, twinkling mirrors and smartly dressed servers working magic on the floor.

Make yourself comfortable in one of the booth style tables and settle in for a meal to remember. Chef Andrew Carmellini – the maestro behind New York favourites like Locanda Verde, Lafayette, and the Dutch – has conjured up a delectable array of treats inspired by his Italian heritage, with the dishes changing depending on the season.

The fresh baked round of bread is a reason to visit this spot alone, complete with a perfectly salted scoop of butter. Settling in for the main event, there is a luxe spread to pick from.

Start with some ‘oysters à la pomme,’ inspired by chef Andrew’s travels to seaside France, finished with horseradish and delicate pearls of green apple sorbet, or the artfully presented red snapper ‘meunière’ also wins with its delicate presentation and flavour profile.

Other dishes which have lured diners back for more include the playful ‘duck duck duck’ tortellini, the succulent scallops ‘Cardoz’, and a pastry-wrapped squab stacked with foie gras. And get your phones at the ready for the sticky toffee pudding, which is flambéed tableside with aged rum.

In terms of drinks, the wine list is extensive, with a selection to suit all tastes and price points, while the bartenders mix up a mean negroni along with a speciality curated list of libations.

The house favourites include the delicate yeasted polenta fritters, the elegantly presented grilled octopus, while the rigatoni is one of Stowell’s most famed dishes. Apparently the chefs under his tutorage even get a tattoo after it after making it 100 times.

There’s a fair selection of wines from all over the world, from a juicy Oregon Pinot Noir to a buttery Californian chardonnay, while the Bloody Mary is worth a pitstop alone.

Meduza Mediterrania

Flaunting seductive interiors from the moment you step inside, Meduza Mediterrania certainly has the wow factor.

Located in the heart of the Meatpacking District, this sprawling restaurant has a sophisticated beach club vibe about it (think Mykonos and Tulum), with architectural wood detailing, indoor plants and sculptural light installations.

The curved bar makes for a top spot to chill with a beverage, and Meduza’s well-curated drinks list will keep you on your toes.

Start with the green hued house margarita and work your way up to the ‘fig and honey,’ which is the restaurant’s twist on an old fashioned and comes served in a smoke filled box.

On the food side of things, prepare to be wowed again. The artfully-presented plates feature inventive Mediterranean flavours inspired by different destinations within the region.

Everything from the roasted garlic hummus to the plump spiced prawns, will have you plunging in for another bite. Even the ‘pesto’ pasta is bursting with an unbelievable mix of flavours.

As the lights dim and the night goes on, expect the DJ to strike up and you might even see a violinist strolling around and playing to the beat. This is a restaurant that will lure you back for more.

Blue Ribbon Sushi Izakaya

After opening in Soho in 1992, Blue Ribbon Brasserie blossomed into a much-loved brand with top shelf sushi and fried chicken being two of its big draws.

Today the restaurant chain has more than 10 locations in the city, along with other spots across the country from Las Vegas to Miami.

If you’re with a larger group and looking for a fun area to explore after dinner, Blue Ribbon Sushi Izakaya in the heady Lower East Side comes highly recommended.

This sprawling, tucked away restaurant describes itself as a ‘Japanese-style tavern, a traditional Sushi Bar and a fine dining experience’ all in one place.

Must orders include the oxtail and bone marrow fried rice which is finished at your table, the Blue Ribbon fried chicken wings, and the spicy tuna with crispy rice.

When it comes to the sushi and sashimi offerings, the chef’s selection is a great way of sampling some of the most popular picks.

To wash it all down, there is a quaffable selection of sake by the glass with flavour profiles to suit all tastes, and some Japanese influenced cocktails to get the party started.

Nestled on a quiet corner in the Lower East Side, Argentinian inspired Balvanera is a spot to hit for a meat fix.

And to top it off, the team here are passionate about wine, so there’s a colourful spread of tipples to pair things with.

The Spanish names of the dishes can be tricky to decipher, but the server will be more than happy to run you through things.

Among the standout starters are the cod fritters (croquetas de bacalao) and the octopus (pulpo de playa), with the meat course being the star of the show. Depending how many there are of you dining, ask for a recommendation of which cuts to get, with everything from skirt to strip loin on offer.

The fat and juicy blood sausage (morcilla) is definitely one to add to your selection. From Tuesday through Thursday chef Fernando Navas serves up a ‘gaucho feast’ for $50 per person, with a selection of house favourites on the dinner menu.

If you have a sweet tooth, any of the desserts will satisfy, with dulce de leche (a creamy caramel sauce) being a key ingredient among the creations.

It would be easy to walk past the Pineapple Club given its fairly anonymous exterior but this is a spot worth plotting on the map and redirecting your course if you’re looking for good times.

On stepping inside, this bar-cum-restaurant makes for an incredible space, with the drinks area opening into a bigger dining area and in the very back, there is a glass roof allowing natural light to flood in.

Topping things off, there is a downstairs lair with another bar helping to get diners in the swing of things well into the night.

On perusing the drinks menu, you’ll quickly learn that this spot is all about the love of rum with a bunch of libations made using the punchy liquor and a fine display of bottles lining the bar shelves.

House favourites include the Pineapple Old Fashioned, made using a blend of pineapple and aged rums, while you can’t go wrong with a good old Pina Colada.

Another winner is the Espresso Martini, although the traditional vodka based menu is adhered to in this case, with the perfect balance of cold brew and coffee liquor thrown in the mix.

Arrive early into the night before the music cranks up a notch to take advantage of the venue’s generous happy hour, which includes a delicious $10 burger, $5 fries and $1.50 oysters.

The well balanced Lavendula – made with Plymouth gin, St Germain, creme de violet and lemon – is a drink worth visiting Post for alone.

Come the warmer months, another big selling point is the leafy backyard, which makes for the perfect place to while away the hours with fine food and drinks.

For a completely different uptown dining experience, check into one of the city’s hottest omakase restaurants, Takeda .

Located on the upper west side in-between 87th and 88th streets on Amsterdam Avenue, this tiny eatery is hard to spot with its simple jet black exterior.

Just a small illuminated sign gives the venue away, and this slick simplicity follows through from start to finish.

Takeda is home to just eight counter seats with chef / owner Yukihiro Takeda calmly leading the show.

During the well-paced two hour sitting, the culinary maestro from Osaka serves up 19 courses, with his creations varying depending on the ingredients available.

What sets Takeda apart from other spots in the city, is Takeda’s creativity, and punctuating the sushi courses are characterful dishes, with abalone sat upon abalone liver and shrimp steamed egg custard being some of the prime examples.

This spot is on the pricier side at $280 per person, but the number of repeat customers shows that this isn’t somewhere where people feel ripped off.

It makes for a great place to mark a special occasion and there’s a range of fine sakes to get into the celebratory swing of things. In terms of the atmosphere, a red brick back wall, low lighting, a wood counter top and a jazz soundtrack, make for a convivial mix.

There are two sittings each evening, one at 5:45pm and one at 8:30pm, with Takeda’s wife and business partner Satomi is on hand throughout to ensure that everything runs to plan.

This unassuming restaurant on Broadway has a theatrical feel the moment you step in, with highly acclaimed former Top Chef contestant Frances Tariga keeping the theatre alive throughout the 16-course tasting menu.

Targia has injected her Filipino heritage into the Japanese run of things, so that each morsel has a thoroughly playful feel. Act One sees a seductive spread of bite-sized dishes, artfully placed atop a hand-shaped vessel, with ingredients such as coconut cream, braised oxtail, and tamarind, keeping you guessing with every chew.

Act Two comes in the form of nigiri or hand-pressed sushi, but this is a world away from the fairly plain pieces that usually come with omakase. One of the standout pieces is Tariga’s Ototo Taco, which features fatty tuna, crispy nori shell, caviar and an Instagrammable spray of gold dust. While the Hotate – comprising scallop, truffle soy, cured foie gras and black summer truffle – is another one to write home about.

Shots of sake and banana-infused Manila Old Fashioneds add to the eatery’s feel-good vibe, plus there are impromptu karaoke sessions come the weekend. Tariga has succeeded at making good food good fun, and it makes for a highly refreshing change.

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and relish the feeling of open space, with a booking at Blackbarn .

Located slap bang on Madison Square Park, this unassuming restaurant opens out into a hangar-like barn space and you’re immediately transported to the climbs of upstate New York or some rustic spot.

Come summer or winter, Blackbarn serves as a top refuge to refuel with a robust menu imagined by executive chef John Doherty.

The East Village location was the first to open and it continues to attract droves of diners to this day. Come summer, the restaurant opens out onto the street so you can enjoy the sunny weather, while in the cooler months, the front shuttered doors close to create a deliciously cosy environment.

The steaks here are a real crowd pleaser, with the hunks of meat perfectly cooked and served with an abundance of thin cut fries. Catching sight of The Smith burger will also make you salivate with a patty sandwiched with cheddar, bacon shallot jam, crispy onions, house pickles, and special sauce.

The menu changes slightly depending on the season, with the Brussels sprouts being a solid winter dish. No matter what the weather, the sticky toffee pudding gets top marks, with dates giving it a natural sweetness and a creamy scoop of ice cream melting into the mix.

If you’ve got Soho House membership, one of the top clubs in town which is often overlooked comes in the form of Ludlow House . This members club occupies a former funeral home in the heart of the buzzy Lower East Side neighbourhood.

Architecturally, it is a beautiful building with a carved stone facade, and the photogenic aesthetic continues inside.

While the main clubhouse floors offer a standard menu filled with club favourites from wood fired pizza to caesar salad, the top floor houses the Cantonese Duckedup restaurant.

This makes for a fantastic place to dine with friends, and skylights and terraces running both sides of the building make for plenty of natural light.

Get your chopsticks at the ready for a medley of treats, with pork soup dumplings, beef noodles, and the scallion pancakes among the standouts.

If you’re looking for a cosy, intimate dining space with innovative seasonal cuisine look no further than The Wesley .

Tucked away in the heart of the West Village and led by executive chef Santiago Astudillo (previously of Le Bernardin and Daniel), this spot prides itself on being ‘vegetable forward’ but there are meat and fish dishes to choose from too.

The neighbourhood restaurant serves up two dining spaces, with the one in the back being more intimate and perfect for a date night and the area in the front being slightly sunnier with tufts of wheat framing the tables.

Settle in and let the friendly servers guide you through the run of events. The whole place has a slightly theatrical feel, with the dishes coming out like clockwork and each morsel proudly presented like a work of art.

The menu changes depending on the season but some of the dishes you must try if available include the deliciously meaty mushroom ceviche, the beautifully curried roasted carrots, the artichoke pasta mixed with cashew cream, saffron and toasted garlic and the trout which is served whole and deboned.

Everything is designed to share, but the flavours are so moreish you might be battling it out with your dining partner. Be warned! The cocktails are just as well balanced and as fun as the food and the Hudson –  featuring a smoking mix of Hudson Whiskey Bourbon and Forthave Amaro – is a winner for those who love Old Fashioneds.

If you go down to this hotel basement in Brooklyn you’ll be in for a big surprise. Leuca at The William Vale hotel in Williamsburg serves as a salubrious lair which cannot be seen from the outside.

The cavernous restaurant boasts a great central bar and an atmospheric main dining room complete with wood panelling, comfortable sofa-cum-booths for groups, low lighting and glass display cabinets housing knickknacks from the Mediterranean – which serves as chef Andrew Carmellini’s main inspiration. Here you will find an array of hearty dishes which transport you to southern Italy.

For dessert, the restaurant’s mighty twist on a tiramisu is a great one to share, with a well balanced blend of limoncello, mascarpone and white chocolate. The cocktails are equally as playful, with the standout concoction being the Giardino D’Leuca rustled up with beefeater gin, green chartreuse, peach liquor, lemon and a brandied cherry to finish.

Tucked away in the Lower East Side, this slick omakase bar and restaurant is worth plotting on your map. Complete with hip hop music, Scandinavian-esque interiors and a neon sign reading ‘Less Talk, More Eat’, the pocket-sized eatery oozes cool from the get-go.

Nab a seat at the counter and let the chef run you through either a 12 or 20 course menu, with his culinary skills set to mesmerise you as you go. My recommendation is doing the 12 course omakase and mixing it up with some of the restaurant’s other standout creations.

The main draw here is the crunchy rice topped with salmon and tuna. The cubed, glazed morsels serve up a moreish sweet and savoury flavour, while the chewy-crispy texture will lure you in for another bite. The perfectly formed wagyu beef gyoza served with a black vinegar and Japanese mustard dip are also well worth an order.

On the drinks side of things there is an extensive sake menu, while the house martini packs a punch with a clean blend of Haku vodka, Dolin vermouth, sakura sake and lemon oil. This restaurant also has a location in the West Village and one in London, with others set to launch.

This is the perfect spot to kick your night off in style, with the hotel’s Microclub on the roof being the next port of call.

Take a tastetastic trip to Thailand courtesy of Soothr . This characterful restaurant in the bustling East Village has a warm and inviting atmosphere thanks to friendly servers and colourful interiors. Take a seat at the bar if you are dining alone, or pitch up at one of the wooden tables.

Be sure to pay a visit when your hunger levels are high, as the portion sizes here are plentiful. Some of the house favourites include the creamy chicken khao soi, the moreish dry crab noodles and the shrimp pad thai.

Servers will be happy to recommend spice levels or dishes if you’re having navigating the menu.

Keep your cool with bottles of traditional Thai Singha beer or dip into one of the eatery’s gem-inspired cocktails with the options ranging from the All That Jade featuring gin, Khalua, matcha, honey and egg white to the bright blue Aquamarine made with vodka, pineapple juice, blue curaçao, lemon zest and Cointreau.

Make sure you make a booking as there is often a line outside due to its outing in the Michelin guide.

Elevate your New York sports bar experience with a home run to Rocco’s Sports & Recreation . Unlike your typical sports bar, this spot in the heart of the NYU college district has a more polished air about it, with high ceilings, leather booths for groups, and plenty of natural light thanks to windows opening out onto the street.

There are TVs dotted about the place so you can catch your favourite games, but you might be too engrossed in the food and drink offerings to notice. This place serves up a surprisingly tasty array of hearty treats.

Some of the top scoring options include the Instagrammable round of tuna tartare atop chopped avocado, the super flavourful brisket burger with handcut fries and the caesar salad topped with devilled eggs.

The cocktails are also a world away from your typical sports bar offerings, with a balanced taste and refined presentation. The martinis even come with olives skewered on wood golf tees. While you wait for orders work up an appetite with the bar’s two free to use basketball arcade machines.

Looking for an atmospheric neighbourhood spot? One Fifth , the newest restaurant from chef and owner Marc Forgione’s Respect Hospitality, debuted in the summer of 2022 on the corner of 5th Avenue and East 8th Street and it has proved a very popular haunt among locals.

Get there for $5 negronis at happy hour and then settle in for dinner that promises to impress on every front, from the service to the flavours.

Roman-style pizzas and homemade pasta are the specialties, while the aged strip steak is another thing to write home about.

Make sure you leave enough room for dessert as the melt-in-the-mouth chocolate walnut cookie and olive oil gelato will get you spooning in for more.

Wine lovers will also be in heaven, as there is an extensive list with a sommelier on hand help you pick the perfect pairing.

There are tables lined around the cavernous room, but the best seats in the house are at the bar so you can watch the suited bartenders in action.

One tipple named Gossip Girl, due to the fact that The Lotte New York Palace served as the backdrop for many of the TV show’s iconic scenes, features a punchy blend of rosé champagne, tequila, thyme cordial, lemon and absinthe, or fans of Hemingway can opt for a drink named in his honour with rum, calvados, and lime among the ingredients.

Despite being a popular post-work drinking spot, the food here shouldn’t be overlooked with some of the top picks being the meaty lobster roll, the Korean BBQ strip steak and the tuna tartare.

Brimming with character, Gab’s is one of the newest editions to the West Village dining scene and it’s already welcomed the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker through the door.

This colourful restaurant has been a labour of love for owner Gabby Madden, and her attention to detail shines through. Fresh flowers adorn the tables and all of the artworks which run from the main dining room to the bathroom were done by Madden.

In terms of the menu, chef Nate Ashton’s focus is on seasonal produce and there’s a perfectly curated selection of dishes. Standout creations include the juicy Berkshire pork chop and the succulent sasso chicken, while the housemade sourdough is the perfect accompaniment to mop up sauce.

The cocktail menu is just as snazzy as the venue and martini lovers will love the Miss Moneypenny, which is a play on a vesper combining London Dry gin, asparagus infused vodka and Cocchi Americano. This spot truly is a feast for the senses.

The Office of Mr Moto

Get your sushi fix at one of the city’s hottest new omakase spots, The Office of Mr Moto . Make sure you book in advance as this speakeasy-style venue is notoriously hard to get into.

After booking, you will receive a riddle that you have to decode in order to get the entry code. Once you’ve cracked it, you’ll be ushered inside for an intimate feast either at the six-seat bar or at one of the tables.

If you can, snag a seat at the bar to watch the sushi masters at work. It makes for a mesmerising show as they go about preparing 21 bites using fresh fish flown in from Tokyo’s Toyosu Fish Market.

Head chef Toshio Matsuoka was a sushi chef in Japan for 50 years before moving to Manhattan a couple of years ago, and his skills shine through with every bite.

Some of the standout pieces include the sea eel sushi and the marinated bluefin tuna. For a true tasting adventure, opt for the sake pairing. On leaving the venue, you will get a note detailing the $185 menu, as all of the courses can prove tricky to remember!

As with the furnishings, the dining menus here transport you to the exotic shores of Mexico, with a smorgasbord of flavours set to impress. Recommendations include the lobster tostada, the shishito peppers, and the grilled strip steak.

Oh, and don’t leave without indulging in the wickedly moreish Cazuela de Chocolate. To wash it all down, there’s a pool of playful cocktails, with our favourite being Kisses In The Car, combining mezcal, rum passion fruit and habanero.

After working up an appetite trawling the stores on Fifth Avenue, dip into Koi for a sushi fix. This Japanese-themed hotel restaurant provides some peace and quiet from the bustle of Bryant Park and the interiors make for quite a site, with a dramatic honeycomb structure running from the back wall up over the ceiling.

The must-try here is the crispy rice, with the option of adding spicy tuna, yellowtail tartare or truffle avocado. The shitake fried rice, which comes with the grilled skirt steak, also wins on texture and flavour.

Pair dishes with sake or opt for one of the refreshing cocktails, with martinis infused with matcha and old fashioneds made with Japanese whiskey. In terms of the crowd, this spot attracts post-office work groups along with tourists and locals.

Quality Meats

If you’re looking for a top New York steak spot, look no further than Quality Meats . This uptown restaurant on the doorstep of Central Park opened in 2006, and it has since become a regular haunt for meat-lovers in the metropolis.

Low lighting, exposed brickwork and well-spaced tables further the convivial atmosphere. The menus here are nice and concise with a list of staples and daily specials to accompany them.

Along with hunks of meat, there is a great mix of seafood dishes. Some of the must tries include the chunky crab and avocado salad and the dressed oysters. If you are dining as a couple the 28 Day Dry-Aged Prime Porterhouse comes highly recommended as you get two different cuts of meat.

Williamsburg Pizza

When it comes to pizza, New York has so many outlets it’s tricky to know where to start. However, one spot which hits the mark when it comes to speedy service and flavour is Williamsburg Pizza . This neighbourhood joint, which has been running for more than a decade, now has several spots in the city and it has just opened in Omaha.

Pop in for a slice or take away a whole pie. We opted for the Sophia Loren (a combination of fresh Mozzarella, parmigiano, sliced tomatoes, garlic and basil) with pepperoni and it scored top marks for the cheese to dough ratio, and pepperoni flavour.

The moreish garlic knots are one of the venue’s specialties, while the fresh salads also come recommended for some crunchy freshness.

Take your tastebuds on a fun-filled trip to Italy, courtesy of this new hotly-anticipated restaurant from the Quality Branded group.

As soon as you step into Bad Roman , which is conveniently located in the Columbus Circle shopping mall close to Central Park, you’re hit by a convivial atmosphere, with cocktail-makers in full swing and bountiful plates of food being whisked around.

Hit the bar for a Roman Cocktail before settling in for a feast to remember. Some must-try dishes include the creamy burrata, the Osetra caviar gnocchi, the lobster scampi and the Instagrammable lemon-shaped lemon cheesecake.

You’ll also want to nab a photo with a post-dinner shot, as the glasses come attached to miniature toy supercars! A fun spot from start to finish.

Scarpetta & The Seville

For a different taste of Italy, head to the heart of Nomad to Scarpetta . Now a global restaurant chain, the New York location – now at The James New York Nomad hotel – was the first to land and it remains a popular spot.

Boasting a cosy yet buzzy atmosphere complete with candlelight, caramel-hued leather booths, dark wood furnishings, a glass-walled wine cellar, and friendly waiting staff, this place promises to put you instantly at ease.

To kick things off, the house bread and accompanying dipping pots are divine, with three different baked goods to keep you busy. If you’re a fan of pasta, then you will be in your element, as there is a concise selection with the spaghetti being the house favourite.

If you want to elevate your pasta experience, the duck and foie gras ravioli hits the spot, as does the short rib and bone marrow agnolotti. Pasta aside, the wagyu strip is seared to perfection and melts in the mouth. The cocktails are equally as well balanced with the Buzzen Bee (gin, lemon and honey citrus foam) being a perfect pick for the warmer months.

Post-dinner The Seville , which is located in the hotel’s basement is a great hideaway, with live music running throughout the week. If you’re a fan of martinis the Lunch In Sorrento, featuring a blend of Grey Goose and caper juice with a chunk of parmesan on the side, is a must-try.

Smith & Wollensky

For a taste of old-school Manhattan be sure to head to one of the city’s most coveted spots, Smith & Wollensky .

This characterful uptown corner bistro promises to put a smile on your face, with cosy interiors, chirpy servers and delicious steaks that will lure you back for future visits.

If you can, nab a table looking into the kitchen, so you can watch the chefs in action as they score and sizzle prime cuts of meat.

This spot also serves up a sensational spread of seafood and the shrimp cocktail and lobster come highly recommended. Other specialities include the mac & cheese and the creamed spinach, while on the steak front be sure to ask you waiter for suggestions based on your taste.

When it comes to drinks, the martinis are one of the largest pours in the city, so you’ll only need one to feel the effect.

For dessert there’s some hefty wedges of cake to choose from, but the Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake is a winning dish, with very moreish icing.

Great Jones Distillery

Whisky lovers will be in their element at the Great Jones Distillery in Soho. This spot opened in 2021 as the first and only legal distillery in Manhattan since the Prohibition.

It makes for a great place to visit with friends or on a date night, with each floor of the historic red brick venue offering something a little different.

Check the calendar for regular tastings and whisky-inspired events or book into the ground floor Grid restaurant for a spread of delicious treats paired with well balanced libations.

There is a bar on the first floor offering views into the distillery area thanks to a glass wall and there are regular pop ups in the basement bar, with the most recent one paying homage to the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat with 80s-inspired food and cocktails.

Cash in on one of the city’s best happy hour deals by pitching in at Sol Mexico . This restaurant – which is laidback with a sprinkle of pizzazz – boasts a prime position just off Madison Square Park so you can take a stroll around the park before partaking in Margaritas, which are priced at $11 3pm to 6pm.

If the weather permits, pitch a seat outside or inside, the venue offers sweeping ceilings with live music, sparkling chandeliers and a low lit ambience.

The ‘grande’ margaritas are punchy and will start your night off with a kick, and then there’s a spread of delights to satisfy your tummy rumbles.

House favourites include the naked guacamole, the grilled wagyu steak, and the beer-battered shrimp tacos. There is also a range of speciality tacos, with one option served with a juicy deep-fried duck leg confit.

If you still have space for dessert, you can’t go wrong with a traditional wedge of tres leches cake, and the Velvet Espresso makes for a deliciously creamy post-dinner cocktail.

Cecconi’s Dumbo

Take a trip over to Brooklyn to feast on views of the Brooklyn Bridge along with fine Italian fare courtesy of Cecconi’s Dumbo . This atmospheric eatery transports you to a world Venetian finery, with candlelight, Murano chandeliers and beamed ceilings setting the tone.

There are two areas to sit in, with one a little ritzier than the other. Pull up a pew and let the attentive staff do their thing. There is an all day menu catering to all tastes, with everything from pizza to pasta to salads to choose from.

The black truffle pizza is a house favourite, as is the creamy burrata, but the whole dover sole with sautéed spinach comes highly recommended for mains and is a great sharing dish between two. For meat-lovers, the perfectly-cooked filet mignon promises to satisfy.

In terms of drinks, there’s a fun and concise cocktail menu, from a Mezcal-infused Dumbo Fashioned to a No More Tears muddled with vodka, coconut cream and pineapple. And on the wine front, there’s a delectable curation with a spread of Italian gems.

Gallow Green

Get your knife and fork ready for a different kind of rooftop restaurant experience over at the McKitterick Hotel in Chelsea in the form of Gallow Green .

This events venue – which is where the show Sleep No More takes place – has a couple of dining options, but Gallow Green is where its at when it comes to atmosphere, service and food. During the summer this space serves as a jungle oasis while in winter it is transformed into a cosy lodge.

Some of the must-try drinks include the World’s Fair (a blend of mezcal, green tea, yuzu and cucumber) and the punchy Manderley (a heady mix of absinthe, lillet blanc and velvet falernum).

On the food front, the juicyhouse burger promises to impress, along with the Caesar salad and perfectly cooked flat iron steak.

Felice at Gild Hall, a Thompson Hotel

If you’re looking for an informal trattoria-style of restaurant, Felice is a boutique chain of Italian inspired eateries dotted across the city.

For a cozy atmosphere, head to the tucked away location at the five-star Gild Hall hotel in downtown Manhattan.

This outpost has a number of tables on the ground floor but the dining area upstairs makes for an impressive area with wood panelled walls and soft lighting. After office hours the place quickly fills up, so it’s best to nab a spot early.

Some of the recommended Tuscan-inspired dishes include the local upstate burrata with traditionally cured prosciutto, the fried baby artichokes and calamari, and the very moreish spaghetti alla carbonara. The perfect place to refuel after a day of sightseeing.

Activities in the city

Mercer Labs

Get ready for a sensory overload, where state-of-the-art installations combining sound, light and texture will leave you scratching your head.

Mercer Labs , Museum of Art of Technology, in downtown Manhattan serves as an adventure playground for adults and children alike, with 36,000 sq ft of space divided up into fifteen themed rooms.

The wacky museum was the brainchild of artist Roy Nachum and visionary Michael Cayre, and they state that it was ‘born from an idea, that breaks free of the constraints on creative practice and is limitless beyond limitations.’

It takes roughly an hour or so to wander through the cavernous venue, but seats which range from hanging swings to rock-like mounds encourage participants to sit and ponder for a while.

For those looking to do something different in Manhattan, Mercer Labs is certainly unlike any other museum in the city.

Prepare to be enthralled and amazed by Nachum’s and Cayre’s creative vision, and plunge into a dreamlike / psychedelic state of mind.

Forest Hills Stadium

Packing its punch of one of New York’s top music venues is Forest Hills in Queens which holds a crowd of 13,000.

This unique spot made its mark as America’s first tennis stadium in 1923 and it was home to a number of firsts in tennis history including the birthplace of the U.S. Open.

In the 1960s it was adapted into a concert venue and today it continues to attract a roster of some of the world’s biggest artists, from Elton John to LCD Soundsystem.

The sound system here will make your innards vibrate with vibrant lighting to boot.

Most recently British producer and DJ Fred Again hosted a sell-out three day extravaganza which showcased the venue’s incredible potential.

The accomplished musician, who has gone from zero to hero in record speed, worked the facilities to his advantage with the visuals and acoustics surpassing expectation.

There are two areas of the venue, with one being the main floor which takes you up close to the stage, and the other being the ‘bowl’ where you can take things in from a height.

If you’re a music fan, this is definitely a venue to check out. For Fred Again’s other tour dates check here .

Second City

If you like comedy, then you will be in for a hoot at The Second City .

The iconic Chicago-based comedy powerhouse, which counts alumni Amy Sedaris and Tina Fey among its alumni, has launched a cavernous venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This lively entertainment hub offers two cabaret-style live theatres, a ‘training centre’ and a chic restaurant and bar that are ready to serve up laughter and libations in equal measure.

The mezzanine level serves up some of the best views in the house as you can soak up views of the auditorium and the entirety of the stage.

If you don’t have chance to have a bite at the venue’s Bentwood restaurant beforehand, drinks and food can be ordered to your theatre table and the whole service is seamless.

The theatre menu is slightly different to the restaurant offering but standouts include the butter sauce popcorn shrimp and the Chicago-style dog. The cocktails have fun theatre-inspired names, from the Rave Revue to the Stage Left but the Old Fashioned is one staple that certainly deresves a round of apppluase.

Check the theatre’s website for the most up to date schedule, with different shows set to run throughout the year. For aspiring comedians, the training centre offers drop in or lengthier programs.

Speakeasy Magick

While Sleep No More might be the headline show at the The McKittrick Hotel, the other options are well worth checking out. Speakeasy Magick is one of the most spectacular magic shows currently running in New York, with some of the city’s top performers pulling a run of spellbinding tricks out of the bag right in front of your eyes.

The 90-minute show takes place in the venue’s characterful Club Car bar area, with bags of popcorn and glass of bubbly kicking things off.

Spectators are seated around tables with other guests, while the magicians move around the room. Be prepared to be dazzled and amazed by a roster of colourful characters who have dedicated their lives to the art of surprise.

As the line-up changes regularly, this is a show you could see numerous times and still be enthralled. The other magic-themed show at The McKittrick hotel which is held for limited runs throughout the year is At The Illusionist’s Table .

This show has a more intimate feel, with everything revolving around a long candle-lit dinner table. As three courses of delicious food are served up along with drams of warming whisky, charismatic illusionist Scott Silven invites guests on a storytelling journey interwoven with mind-bending illusion and mystical mentalism.

Throughout the event, Silven makes sure to converse with almost all the guests, leaving each one stumped and scratching their heads by his antics. This really makes for a dinner to remember! Be sure to check on the website when this show is running.

Chamber Magic

For a completely different kind of magic show, head over to the upscale Lotte New York Palace hotel in Midtown. This 1890s landmark, which was once the residence of prominent financier Henry Villard, is now the base for world-renowned magician Steve Cohen .

The intimate show takes place in the hotel’s ballroom which transports you back to the grandeur of times gone by. Take a seat and settle in for a show that will leave you scratching your head at every twist and turn.

Cohen has designed a smart show with a good pace and a sense of humour runs throughout. Be prepared to devour a mix of magic courses, including conjuring, mind-reading, sleight of hand, and a mind-bending trick called Think-A-Drink where Cohen’s ‘magic teapot’ can supposedly make any cocktail requested by audience members.

This show makes for a great excuse to get a little dressed up and it’s highly-advised to check out the Lotte’s magnificent Gold Bar for a beverage or two before taking a pew.

If it’s a spot of late night dancing you’re after, Nowadays in Bushwick serves as a playground for adults with an expansive outdoor space decked out with food trucks and a fog-shrouded indoor space where you can dance the night away until 4am.

Aire Ancient Baths

After days of shopping, partying and gorging on all of Manhattan’s delights are trip to the Aire Ancient Baths is the just the medicine you need.

This place in Tribeca transports you to an underground world of tranquility, complete with soft lighting, calming music and delightful smells.

The sensory experience continues in the form of various bathing pools, which are heated at different temperatures. Heat yourself up in the super hot pool before daring yourself to plunge into the freezing tub. One of the most unique pools features an ultra high salt content so your whole body floats.

There is also a steam room in the centre of the space, which will help decongest your airways so you’re ready to hit Manhattan for round two.

Day passes do not include treatments, so you will need to book these separately.

If you’re looking for something a little wacky and wonderful, Aire’s signature luxury treatment involves a spa session for two in a barrel-shaped tub filled with red wine.

Sage + Sound

If you’re staying uptown, another place serving as a peaceful retreat is Sage + Sound.

This perfectly formed upscale wellness centre induces a sense of calm from the moment you step in, with refined fragrances running through and warm, natural-hued interiors.

Inspired by its founders’ deeply personal journeys navigating trauma, grief, addiction, and serious health issues, Sage + Sound serves up an interesting range of services which have a more spiritual edge, unlike other spots in the Big Apple.

Some of the most popular treatments on offer include group breathwork classes, acupuncture sessions and the personalised facials which promise to have you leaving looking like new.

The attention to detail at this place and the level of service, has meant this wellness destination has quickly become a must-visit for New Yorkers in the know.

Open seven days a week and until late, it’s easy to find classes and services to fit around your schedule.

If you just fancy popping by to check it out, there is also a partner cafe – Isle of Us – on the premises, selling a seductive range of health foods and cute gifts to take home for friends, family or loved ones.

How to get around

Uber is by far one of the easiest modes of transport to navigate the city or if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, Revel electric scooters are available to pick up from the curb by downloading the app, as are electric Citi Bikes .

For airport transfers, the ultimate option is Blade but the next best option if you’re travelling with a group and want a swankier vehicle is Blacklane . This service allows you to schedule rides in advance and you can pick from a range of vehicles, including limousines.

Resolutions cracking down on helicopter noise, safety heard by New York City Council

By CBS New York Team

April 16, 2024 / 8:07 PM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK -- The New York City Council on Tuesday heard several resolutions to crack down on helicopter noise and safety.

They're calling on the city, state and Federal Aviation Administration to implement reforms, including a ban on all non-essential helicopter travel, like tourist and chartered helicopter flights over the city.

They also want the state legislature to amend the Hudson River Park Trust Act by banning use of its heliport and establish a noise tax.

Another proposal would require the installation of sound level meters in parts of the city that commonly experience helicopter noise so that the data could be collected and reported by the Department of Environmental Protection.

The resolutions also encourage the use of electric helicopters.

"New York City needs to be at the forefront of the electrification movement for the sake of our neighbors, our planet, and to remain an industry leader in climate action," Majority Leader Amanda Farías said in a statement.

The resolutions are sponsored by Farías and councilmembers Gale Brewer, James Gennaro and Lincoln Restler. They were joined at a press conference Tuesday by a number of other New York lawmakers and supporters, including Comptroller Brad Lander, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine and actor Amy Schumer.

The city says more than 59,000 helicopter noise complaints were made to 311 in 2023, compared to over 26,000 in 2022. According to city data, there have been over 8,000 helicopter noise complaints so far this year.

Legislation calling for an end to helicopter sightseeing tours was previously introduced in 2022 .
