Our guide was very knowledgeable and had a great appreciation for the area. He was also very conscious of litter prevention on the trails. Plenty of room within the jeep. The four of us highly recommend this company. Enjoy!

This was definitely a highlight of our stay—and most of the thanks goes to our guide. He made the tour so much more than we expected. He was an educator, and it showed. We loved this jeep tour!

The scenery was magnificent, and our tour guide was a hoot! They knew the territory very well, and pointed out many fascinating details. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

This was an excellent tour that covered a lot of ground and had great information! There was humor and enough time at each place to be able to feel and get into the experience. Highly recommend!

We had a fun, informative, and wonderful tour. Our guide helped make our tour very enjoyable. He was very courteous, friendly, and professional. It was a pleasure to take the tour and enjoy the natural beauty.

Why Tour with Us?

I fell in love with Tennessee when my wife, Jenn, and I moved here 16 years ago. Ever since then, I've been showing her off (Tennessee, not my wife–although she's pretty great, too) to my family, friends, and travelers. The touring experiences we offer have all been born out of Jenn and me simply just spending time in our area and discovering how much fun it is to do it with others.

I have a masters in hospitality and I love to share my experiences, stories, and secret places with new friends. I keep my tours small so I can interact with my guests as much as possible. So, if you're planning on being in the area, come hang out with Jenn and me.

Getting a taste of Smoky Mountain moonshine for yourself is a fantastic way to celebrate a visit to the Smokies.

Tennessee is known for its moonshine history, particularly in the Great Smoky Mountains region. This history is somewhat shady and mysterious, which is why so many people are attracted to drinking this spirit.

Specifically, you can go to moonshine tasting Gatlinburg distilleries and others in the region. Keep reading to learn the history of moonshine in the Great Smoky Mountains, how this spirit is made, and the best places where you can taste moonshine and tour distilling facilities.

Best Moonshine Gatlinburg Tours & Tastings

A few great moonshine tasting Gatlinburg distilleries can teach you about the colorful lore and process behind their spirits. You can’t go wrong by stopping at one of them … or all of them!

Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery

Possibly the most widely known of the Gatlinburg moonshine distilleries, Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery was established in 2010.

As the first federally licensed distillery in East Tennessee, it showcases the art of distilling authentic moonshine. The Ole Smoky Mountain moonshine distillery’s recipes and processes are passed-down secrets and traditions.

Moonshine Distillery Tours Near Me

If you’re looking for a “moonshine distillery near me” to tour when visiting the Smoky Mountains, don’t miss The Holler.

The Holler in Gatlinburg is Ole Smoky’s main production and touring facility. You can get a behind-the-scenes look at everything on a guided tour and enjoy a 13-sample tasting of excellent moonshine and whiskey.

If you don’t have time for a tour, you can stop in for samples of up to seven flavors of this Gatlinburg moonshine — such as apple pie, lemon drop, peach, and strawberry.

Ole Smoky has a few other locations as well. The Ole Smoky Whiskey Barrelhouse is in Gatlinburg, the Ole Smoky Barn is in Pigeon Forge, and 6th & Peabody is in Nashville. All of them offer moonshine samples.

Sugarlands Distilling Company

Another popular moonshine tasting Gatlinburg distillery is Sugarlands Distilling Co. , which is proud to be locally owned and community-minded.

The distillery opened downtown in 2014 and offers free guided tours of its facility to give you a look at what happens behind the scenes of moonshine production. Other tour and workshop options include the Blended Cocktail Tour, Meet the Distiller Workshop, and Distiller for the Day Workshop.

The Sugarlands distillery is open nearly every day, and you get to sample the award-winning spirits before you leave.

Moonshine tastings are led by an expert, and you’ll receive tasting notes and cocktail ideas. With every $5 tasting, you get a $5 voucher to redeem with an in-store purchase.

The Tennessee moonshine company store sells Sugarlands spirits, apparel, and mountain merchandise. On the Back Porch pavilion, it hosts evening concerts from time to time.

Tennessee Shine Company

With a location in Gatlinburg, the Tennessee Shine Co. focuses on bottling the best moonshine rather than the most moonshine.

This small-batch distilling company uses family recipes that have been passed down for generations. It makes a variety of unique flavors — Big Orange Dreamsicle, Nanner Puddin’, Choco Moo Shine, Blue Houdini, Pina Colada, and many more.

While you’re getting a taste of these flavorful spirits, you can enjoy a friendly, down-home atmosphere.

On top of that, the TN Shine Co. makes whiskey and wine. The distillery has several other locations as well — Pigeon Forge, Wear Valley, and Sevierville.

At the Sevierville location, you can join a moonshine tour that covers the history of this spirit and its connection to NASCAR. You’ll learn how the spirits are made and sample them too.

Nearby Moonshine Tasting Gatlinburg Distilleries

The Great Smoky Mountains has more than just the three Gatlinburg moonshine distilleries. Many others are spread around the region, and we’ve highlighted a few that we think you should visit for tastings.

Old Forge Distillery

In Pigeon Forge, Old Forge Distillery makes award-winning craft spirits. The quality grains that it uses come from The Old Mill, one of the oldest continuously operating gristmills in the United States.

The moonshine Pigeon Forge distillery stone grinds the grains like the generations before. In addition to mason jars of moonshine, it makes bourbon whiskey, cream liqueurs, gin, rum, vodka, moonshine cherries, and more.

You can even go to the Pigeon Forge distillery cocktail bar for a taste of seasonal and signature cocktails crafted by mixologists.

Tennessee Legend Distillery

More than just a shop for moonshine, Tennessee Legend Distillery was established in 2015. It has two locations in Sevierville — one on Newport Hwy and another on Winfield Dunn Pkwy.

Both of them allow you to taste the award-winning White Lightning Moonshine and Salted Caramel whiskey. The distillery makes cream liqueur and other straight spirits too.

Tennessee Legend Distillery - Sevierville, Tennesse - Smokey Mountain Moonshine

Bootleggers Distillery

There’s a myth that bootleggers created a secret society that tracked down the best moonshine, distillation methods, and recipes. Over the generations, these components were refined, and Bootleggers Distillery in Hartford brings these secrets to the masses.

You can go for a moonshine tour and tasting any day of the week. If you want to make your own whiskey, the Build a Barrel program lets you do that with assistance from the distilling team.

Adventure Distilling Co.

Offering a unique moonshine experience, Adventure Distilling Co. in Cosby has a one-of-a-kind way of making quality liquor.

The still house is located in a small green building on family-owned land. JB’s 103 is its signature spirit, which is 103 proof clear corn liquor.

During tours and tastings, you could meet JB Rader, the legendary namesake of the signature moonshine.

The History of Great Smoky Mountains Tennessee Moonshine

Did you know that moonshine has been around for centuries? It originated in Ireland and Scotland, where distilling and drinking whiskey were traditions. When immigrants from those Celtic countries arrived in the Appalachian Mountains, they used corn to make whiskey.

Decades later, the federal government passed a whiskey tax of $2 per gallon, which was a 20-cent increase that many people in the mountains simply couldn’t afford. As a result, they stopped paying the tax and continued to distill the whiskey.

They became known as “moonshiners,” a word that’s derived from the fact that they secretly made illegal whiskey in the mountains at night. That’s when this particular type of whiskey earned the name moonshine.

In the Great Smoky Mountains, moonshine distillation became a vital source of extra revenue for many farmers. Transforming the surplus corn into whiskey made it more viable and easier to move, trade, and sell. The money that they made helped them pay bills, start new businesses, and provide for their families.

A favorite distilling spot on the Tennessee side of the Smokies was the Forbidden Caverns because it was a remote location with a reliable water supply. You can see an old moonshine still while touring the caverns, which are in Sevierville less than one hour from Gatlinburg.

Famous Moonshiners

One infamous moonshiner was Lewis Redmond, a North Carolina native who became a legend after killing a deputy while trying to avoid arrest in 1876.

He evaded the law and shared his moonshine profits with area residents until he was arrested in 1881. Eventually, he was pardoned and worked in a South Carolina government-operated distillery.

However, the most famous moonshiner of recent history was Marvin Sutton, nicknamed Popcorn. His popularity grew after he appeared in various documentaries and released an autobiography — “Me and My Likker.”

In 2007, the federal government busted him, but he passed away before serving the sentence.

Rumor: In the 1920s, mob boss Al Capone is believed to have hidden his illicit spirits in the Great Smoky Mountains before moving them to Chicago.

Modern Moonshine Distilleries

It wasn’t until 2009 that Tennessee passed a state law that allowed moonshine distilleries to open in Gatlinburg and across the state, making it legal to make moonshine in Tennessee.

Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery was the first in Gatlinburg. Since then, many wonderful moonshine Tennessee distilleries have popped up in the greater area, and tours have become popular.

Smoky Mountain Moonshine

The Process of Making Gatlinburg Moonshine

Traditionally, the term “moonshining” refers to making or smuggling illegal spirits under moonlight or at night. Now that it’s legal to make moonshine, Gatlinburg distilleries don’t have to operate in secret. Every distillery might use its own ingredients and processes, but the basics are nearly the same.

Essentially, moonshine consists of cornmeal, sugar, water, and yeast, and these ingredients go through two critically timed processes.

Fermentation is the first process, which involves using yeast to convert sugar into acids, alcohol, and gases. The resulting mixture is called the mash.

The second part of the moonshine making process is distillation, the fundamental steps for which include:

  • Heat the mash to about 172 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Evaporate the alcohol, and collect the steam in a worm box (water-filled barrel or crate) through a pipe before it returns to its liquid form.
  • Cool the alcohol vapor in the worm box, allowing it to condense back into a liquid.
  • Filter the liquid from the worm box into a barrel or other container.

Initially, moonshine comes out of these processes as a clear liquid, which is when the flavor and alcohol are most potent.

The color changes after it ages for several months or years in charred oak barrels. In a lot of cases, distilleries add fruits — apples, cherries, peaches, strawberries — and other ingredients to produce a range of flavors of moonshine, which also change the color.

The Experiences You've Heard About

Gatlinburg Ghosts of The Smokies Most Haunted Tour

Discover Gatlinburg's deadly past and the plethora of hauntings caused by cannibalism, war, and violence that come to life in the dark of night.

Ancient Ills, Timeworn Graveyards and Civil War Spirits

Gatlinburg’s reputation as the Gateway to the Smoky Mountains means plenty of winter activities for out of town visitors. However, just underneath the idyllic mountain town’s surface lies a dark and twisted history that most on the Gatlinburg Haunts tour initially never think exists.

The area houses unprecedented paranormal activity levels, especially on the parkway, which is commonly called the Strip. This hour-long, one-mile tour will uncover the real story behind Gatlinburg’s rough frontier town origins, as well as its complicated and terrifying modern hauntings.

You will see the compelling haunted locations that test the limits of what you might believe. Rest assured, though, the authentic stories you will hear are plucked straight from the history books and confirmed accounts of encounters with the supernatural. Find out the storied history of one of the oldest graveyards in the state and the shadowy ghouls who lurk along its walls. Listen in horror to the tales of murder, suicide, jealousy, revenge, cannibalism, and everything in between. Gatlinburg’s glossy exterior may fool some of the people who visit the town, but we will help you understand the horror on which this town was built.

What’s in a name – a feud!

When there are only a few dozen people in the town, one general store might be enough. Any businessman likes a monopoly. Imagine the surprise then, of the members of the founding family of the town, the Ogle’s, (namesakes of the Ogle Brothers General store), when Radford Gatlin opened the Gatlin General Store. The feud compounded the mean-spiritedness and unfounded preferential treatment of people by Radford Gatlin. Then how did he become the name after which the town was named?

The dishonest way this came about will be revealed on our tour, as well as how the ghost of Radford Gatlin’s slave haunts the Mountain Mall, on land previously owned by the Ogle Family!

What makes Gatlinburg so haunted?

In a city with such a vibrant and modern tourist scene, separating Gatlinburg’s dark history from its ski-resort façade can be pretty difficult. Gatlinburg Haunts takes you on an up-close look at the city’s troubled history and macabre present that others would simply ignore.

Dating back to the early 19th century, the earliest inhabitants of the town were Scots and Irish settlers who secured their treasured independence during some of the darkest periods of American history by fighting to preserve their fierce seclusion.

Even as the area has developed in recent years, remnants of its tragic history poke through to the surface, whether through an aging cemetery (one of the oldest in the state), ancient blood-curdling Cherokee monsters, or the gory horrors of an old battlefield. Our unique tour along the iconic strip will explore the existential dread that tears at the flimsy facade of the town’s easily digestible tourist fair.

You may come to Gatlinburg expecting a quaint little tourist town, but on our tour, you will learn that there is much more to the Gateway to the Smokies than meets the eye, and you may not like what you see.

The graveyard has shadows and plenty of them, not cast by light, but remnants of unhappy former residents’ supernatural energy. Two people have lain independent claim to seeing clusters of shadows on the Church wall, inside the porch, and throughout the graveyard. Seemingly benevolent and fleeting, the shadows have been here longer than any current living resident of Gatlinburg.

Civil War in the Smokey mountains.

The residents of Gatlinburg were almost all sympathetic to the Union cause, yet being in the middle of the expanding Confederate territories, they chose neutrality. Mother nature, however, would intervene to put at least one conflict on their doorstep.

A saltpeter mine near the town (saltpeter being a key ingredient in gunpowder), attracted Confederate forces’ attention. A stubborn Confederate Colonel named William Thomas was tasked with occupying the mine. He led an integrated Cherokee infantry group into the town to take supplies before occupying the mine.

As well as putting the townspeople on edge, the move caught the attention of nearby Union forces who soon turfed the regiment out of their hastily built fort around the mine.

Colonel Thomas, however, did not take defeat well; he festered in a rough camp in the forests near the town. He continued to raid the town of Gatlinburg for supplies, and the occasional forced conscript, while he and his dwindling band of men cooked up a series of increasingly wild plans to regain the fort from the 600 well equipped Union men ensconced at the top of a hill near the mine. Some began to suspect the Colonel was starting to lose his mind. His wild-eyed demands of the townspeople grew increasingly bizarre.

Needless to say, the 5-month long guerilla war earned Colonel Thomas no friends in Gatlinburg as the constant raids wore the townspeople’s tolerance thin. The Union troops’ soon grew weary of the annoying harassment by Colonel Thomas and his band of rogue confederates. The Union troops attacked in a quick and deadly operation one night, the Cherokee’s scattered, many were captured, Thomas himself was shot and stabbed 23 times.

However, Colonel Thomas’s ghost still roams the woods, looking for another desperate way to get back the fort that no longer exists.

More stories in the thick woods of the Smokey Mountains

There’s an eerie energy in the Smokey Mountains, with its dark stories of Witchcraft, monsters, and cannibals haunt the town. Book your tour today to hear all these stories and more as told by professional local guides.

With so many tours and activities to choose from Gatlinburg, how do you choose which ones to book?

Why should you take the gatlinburg haunts tour.

Warm yourself on the cold Tennessee nights

Nothing warms the body like a pounding heart, which you are sure to have on the Gatlinburg Haunts tour. Departing from the Space Needle in Downtown Gatlinburg our tour takes in some of the lesser-known sights of this charming mountain town.

Our professional local storytellers are passionate about their town, and the amazing stories of hauntings and ghosts, and the incredible history of this modest town in the mountains.

After the sun goes down, the town takes on a different character, and the dark woods become spooky beyond belief. Only we have the historical stories of hauntings and the spirits that wander the hills at night.

The rivers here are numerous and fast running, but the one that is haunted for certain is a shallow and gentle brook called The Cliff Branch River. One of the tales on your tour will tell you why any young men driving alongside this river at night should think twice before picking up any hitchhikers!

Night Skiing isn’t for everyone.

There’s lots to do at night in Gatlinburg, even night skiing at the resorts up in the mountains. But indoor activities get stale after a while and if you are at all outdoorsy, you’ll want to spend as much time as possible in the clean fresh air of the Smoky Mountains.

On a crisp night, there really is nothing so refreshing, or spooky as a walk around the town. Gatlinburg Haunts takes in the Skylift park with its magnificent views, the haunted Space Needle, and the Cliff Branch River.

What if you only have a day or two in the mountains?

It’s easy to fill your days in Gatlinburg, take the cable car up to the peak and walk the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America, the town also has a host of crazy golf courses, if that’s your thing! But your nights in Gatlinburg have fewer options. All the major attractions close in the early evening, but Gatlinburg Haunts tours set off in the evening, and are always entertaining and by far the scariest thing in town. Come walk alongside expert narrators while hearing about the old and new ghosts of Gatlinburg and tell you all there is to know about this fascinating town.

What if you don’t ski at all?

If it’s a cold day in Gatlinburg, you’ll be thankful for the chance to walk around and keep warm, but spare a thought for the hundred-year blizzard that kept the town isolated for weeks just after the Civil War. It was a different place back then, with fewer residents, more open country and a lot less traffic.

One character in the area who experienced the blizzard was ‘Craft the Carnivore’, who built his family lodge off to the south of Gatlinburg, in what is now the Smoky Mountains National Park .  Simon Craft was a well-known Confederate Officer who ridiculed men who didn’t eat what he considered enough meat. He was known for eating all kinds of meats and for being a gracious and welcoming host.

The winter of the blizzard, Craft the Carnivore hosted a Twentieth Wedding Anniversary party to end all parties. While they were eating, the blizzard started. No one could leave for days. The days turned into weeks, and food ran low.

After nearly three months, Simon Craft, his wife, and a close family friend were the only ones around to tell what happened in the Family lodge, but none of them ever did.  We have some theories to share with you on the Gatlinburg Haunts tour.

Both are pieces of history traveling through time to share a piece of history with those who visit. Rugby is a true testament to the Victorian era’s architectural beauty and charm.

Not to be confused with its more famous counterpart in Georgia, Savannah, Tennessee, is a hidden gem along the Tennessee River. Its historic downtown area features a mix of Greek Revival and Victorian architecture, along with scenic river views and charming parks. A stroll through the historic downtown area will reveal restored shops and restaurants, like the Savannah Market, where the Savannah Farmer’s Market is hosted each Wednesday. The standalone brick building carries a Victorian essence with goth undertones. The Savannah Theater is also a must-see. Its 60s-inspired makeup welcomes visitors to catch a movie while enjoying a slice of local history.

Gatlinburg , Tennessee, while small, has become a destination getaway for people across the United States. The town was originally deemed a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains. In its early days, Gatlinburg was also a hub for the logging industry, and much of the architecture present in the town today is cumbersome of this historical fact. The Salt and Pepper Museum is a great example, with its medieval log framing and castle-inspired welcome sign. The museum is filled with salt and pepper shakers from different eras, so visitors can take a piece of history back home with them. Even more breathtaking is the Treetop Skywalk at Anakeesta, which invites visitors to explore the forest on a log bridge surrounded by sparkling lights. Gatlinburg is a great place to soak in outdoor-inspired architecture and its impact on the town.

Whether those visiting the state of Tennessee are history buffs, architecture enthusiasts, or simply looking to explore Tennessee’s hidden treasures, they will find that these eight towns offer a perfect blend of beauty, charm, and Southern hospitality. There is no place quite like the South, and there is architecture that exists from history’s past, so be sure to grab a camera and get ready for an adventure that can’t be found anywhere else. Prepare to be enchanted by the historic architecture and picturesque landscapes that await visitors in these delightful Tennessee towns.

The O.J. Simpson White Bronco Is Now a Museum Piece. In Tennessee.

The vehicle that Simpson fled in as 95 million Americans watched on television is on display at the Alcatraz East Crime Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

A white Ford Bronco in a museum, next to an old-fashioned 1930s style car.

By Beth Braden and Emily Cochrane

Beth Braden reported from Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and Emily Cochrane from Nashville.

Tyler Starrett was on vacation with his family in Pigeon Forge, about 35 miles from Knoxville in eastern Tennessee, when they learned on Thursday that O.J. Simpson had died .

So they changed plans. They had heard that one of the key artifacts of the Simpson case happened to be on display nearby at the Alcatraz East Crime Museum: the 1993 white Ford Bronco that Simpson fled from the police in, just days after the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson, his former wife, and Ronald L. Goldman. They could not resist.

“If the Bronco is here in Pigeon Forge, why don’t we go see it?” Starrett, 23, said.

Starrett is too young to have been among the 95 million television viewers who watched the low-speed chase unfold on June 17, 1994, when a swarm of police cars followed the white Bronco over some 60 miles of Southern California freeways, with Simpson holding a gun to his head in the back seat. But he was among those who visited the museum to see the vehicle in person on Thursday, as a three-minute clip of the police chase played on loop in the background.

Pigeon Forge, best known for Dollywood, Dolly Parton’s theme park, is at first glance not an obvious home for such a relic. But in recent years, this town has increasingly become a place for attractions and museums dedicated to the offbeat and believe-it-or-not interests of an American tourist — including the Alcatraz East Crime Museum, which is housed in a prisonlike building designed to be a cross between the Tennessee State Prison just outside Nashville and the original Alcatraz, in San Francisco Bay.

Inside the museum, the white Bronco is one of several notorious vehicles.

It sits alongside the 1968 Volkswagen Beetle that was owned by the serial killer Ted Bundy, the 1933 Essex-Terraplane used by the bank robber John Dillinger and the so-called death car from the 1967 movie “ Bonnie and Clyde ,” riddled with bullet holes. (A Pigeon Forge snow globe featuring the museum, the Bronco and the Beetle can be purchased for $10.99 in the gift shop.)

“There are events in history that will always stick in people’s minds, and I think the O.J. chase is one of those for a large number of people,” said Ally Pennington, the artifacts and projects manager for the museum.

The chase, captured by news helicopters and broadcast live on television, gripped the nation. Networks interrupted Game 5 of the N.B.A. finals and prime-time shows, and brought star news anchors back to their newsrooms to narrate the scene.

Simpson, a former football star, eventually surrendered at his Los Angeles home. He was later acquitted of both sets of murder charges after an equally high-profile criminal trial, but was found liable for their deaths in a civil suit several years later.

The Bronco is among the most popular and most prominent exhibits at the privately owned museum, which opened in 2016 after a similar crime museum closed in Washington. The vehicle belonged to Al Cowlings, Simpson’s friend and former teammate, who was driving it about 40 miles per hour as Simpson fled the police.

The car was previously featured on a 2017 episode of the reality television show “Pawn Stars,” on which Mike Gilbert, a former agent for Simpson, said he purchased the car in part to keep it from potentially being used by a tour company. He unsuccessfully sought more than $1 million for it on the show.

The museum declined to say who allowed for the display of the car, citing privacy concerns.

“Different generations have different responses to it, because obviously people who watched the chase live and who were around for that respond differently,” Pennington said. She added, “Most people are just shocked to see it because it is the white Bronco from the O.J. chase and it’s such an iconic moment in history.”

Never far from the museum’s mind, Pennington said, are the victims of the crimes featured in the exhibits, or the pain experienced by those who survive them. She said that while Simpson’s death might change aspects of a temporary display recognizing the 30th anniversary of the tragedy, it planned to focus on the victims.

On Thursday, the museum had taped a label acknowledging Simpson’s death on a plexiglass case next to the Bronco that displays a set of his golf clubs. At least two visitors learned of his death from the sign.

“It was pretty wild — you’d have people arguing about it, you know, at Waffle House,” David Hardigree, who was visiting from Northern Kentucky, recalled of the Simpson trial, and the debates over whether he was guilty or not.

But his visit on Thursday, he said, was just “ironic timing.”
