You do not need a visa to visit New Zealand if you are:

  • A New Zealand citizen travelling on a New Zealand passport or on a foreign passport that has a New Zealand citizen endorsement
  • An Australian citizen travelling on an Australian passport
  • A foreign passport holder with a valid visa for New Zealand - including a Permanent Resident visa

If you plan to visit New Zealand for a short period, you need to request a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (opens in new window) (NZeTA) before you travel if you are:

  • A citizen of a country which has a visa waiver (opens in new window) agreement with New Zealand (you can stay up to three months)

If you don’t meet the above, then you’ll need a visitor visa. The fastest and easiest way to apply for a visitor visa (opens in new window) is online.

Before travelling to New Zealand, you need to make sure your passport is valid for at least three months longer than your expected departure date.

Be sure to request your NZeTA (opens in new window) , or apply for your visitor visa well in advance of travel to avoid delays, and only use the official NZeTA website to request your New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority.

For more information on cost and processing times, visit the official NZeTA website .

If you have a biometric ordinary passport (or electronic passport) and are over 12 years old, you may be able to use New Zealand Customs eGate service. This allows you to complete your Customs and Immigration checks faster so you can get on with enjoying your visit to New Zealand.

Traveller Declaration requirements (opens in new window)

It’s free and you can complete it on the NZTD website or by downloading the NZTD app ahead of your travel.

If you apply for a visa or NZeTA, you still need to complete an NZTD (opens in new window) .

Here's how to complete your declaration online.

New Zealand Visitor Visa checklist

When you apply for a New Zealand visa , you need to make a visitor visa checklist so that you don’t forget to meet all of the requirements. However, this checklist might vary depending on your nationality. We mention this because you might need a Paper Visa to enter this country, or you could simply apply for a New Zealand ETA .

Alt Text

The New Zealand ETA is an online document that can be used by travelers who are exempt from needing a Paper Visa. The checklist for this document is quite simple and we’ll mention it in this article.

Lucky for you, iVisa.com doesn’t impose many requirements, which is why the list is relatively short for you. We recommend you use iVisa.com to apply for your ETA or even just to find out if you need another type of document to enter New Zealand. Remember that you can verify this information on our homepage by using our visa checker tool.

If you pay attention, you can check everything off the list in no time.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do i need a visa to visit new zealand.

It depends on your nationality. With iVisa.com, you can apply for an ETA online. But, before applying for this document, you should check your eligibility. You can click here and use our visa checker putting your nationality and New Zealand as your destination.

WHAT IS AN ETA?

The New Zealand Tourist ETA (NZ Electronic Travel Authority) is an electronic visa that grants the holder the right to enter New Zealand multiple times. There’s no need to make an appointment or present original documents to the Embassy by using our services.

This online document is available only for those nationalities that don’t need a Paper Visa to enter New Zealand, including Canada and the United States.

HOW LONG CAN VISITORS STAY IN NEW ZEALAND WITH AN ETA?

If you apply for a New Zealand ETA , you can stay in the country for 90 days Per Entry . This document also gives you Multiple Entry , so you can enter and leave many times.

WHAT ARE THE DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO APPLY?

With iVisa.com , you’ll need just a few documents to start your application. We’ll ask you for the following as a New Zealand visitor visa checklist:

  • A current passport that is valid for at least six months upon arrival.
  • Arrival and departure dates.
  • Credit/debit card or PayPal account.
  • You also need a valid email address where you’ll get the ETA.

Keep in mind that by using other services you could need more documents, and that could make you waste more time. That’s why we can guarantee that iVisa.com allows you to save effort and a lot of time with travel requirements like this one.

HOW LONG IS THE ETA VALID?

Once you receive your ETA , you’ll be able to use it for 2 years after issued .

WHAT ARE THE PROCESSING TIMES AND PRICES?

HOW CAN I APPLY FOR A NEW ZEALAND ETA?

You don’t need to be an expert on online forms to apply for this one. The process has 3 steps, and these are:

  • First, offer your personal details to the online form and select the best processing time for you.
  • The second step will ask you to check all the information you gave in step one and make the payment.
  • The last step is based only on documents, so you’ll only have to upload the documents required (only if necessary).

You can start your online form here . After you are ready with this process, you can click on submit and wait for your ETA, which will be delivered via email. Don’t forget that iVisa.com has a fantastic support service that you can contact if you need help while applying.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I HAVE APPLIED?

The only thing you have to do after you apply is to wait for your New Zealand ETA via email inbox, nothing else. You don’t even need to visit the embassy- remember that we contact the official authorities because that’s part of our job and the service we provide.

IS IT SAFE TO USE IVISA.COM TO GET MY ETA?

Tens of thousands of New Zealanders travel or are resident overseas. For most this is an incident-free experience but the best laid plans can be upset by a number of problems. Some are impossible to forsee or avoid so, by planning ahead and arming yourself with the right information, you can reduce the risks you might encounter overseas. Please see our Top Ten Tips:

  • Register your travel and contact details. This information is kept absolutely confidential and only used if there is an emergency. For example, it means we can give you warning of an approaching tropical cyclone or give you advice on what to do if there’s major civil unrest or if there’s been a terrorist attack.

Take out travel insurance. Your policy should cover any activities you plan to undertake (from scuba diving to scooter riding), personal liability, medical treatment, emergency medical evacuation, and any pre-existing medical conditions.  Even minor medical treatment can be very expensive overseas. If you suffer an injury overseas and return to New Zealand, ACC may be able to help with treatment costs in New Zealand, but only if you intended to be overseas for less than six months. ACC is unable to cover expenses incurred overseas. Visit www.acc.co.nz/travel to learn more.

Keep in contact with family and friends. Give a detailed copy of your itinerary, including accommodation details and your travel insurance policy, to a relative or friend. If you change your itinerary, let your loved ones know.  If you find yourself caught up in an overseas emergency situation, don’t forget to phone or email to let family know you are ok.

  • Check visa requirements, including requirements for electronic travel authorities (eTA’s), and make sure you have at least one clear page in your passport for immigration stamps.   Your travel agent or the Embassy or High Commissions of the countries you intend to visit or transit through can tell you about visa and entry requirements, which you should check well in advance.
  • Know where your nearest New Zealand Embassy/High Commission/Consulate will be.
