Imagine for a moment that you are on the deck of a ship, sipping a glass of wine. You turn your head towards the water just in time to spot a pod of dolphins swimming by or flying fish, providing company in the ocean. After lingering in the sunshine for a while, it's time to head inside for a 3-course evening meal and a splash in the pool before retiring to bed.

Now, what kind of vessel are you on?

No, you are not on a standard commercial cruise ship. You are not on a packed luxury liner hopping between Caribbean islands. You are aboard a modern freighter. Hundreds of cargo ships, carrying everything from fire engines to apples, are crossing the world's oceans, and many are happy to take you along for the ride. Adventurous travelers, including the Transitions Abroad family, have been doing so for years, as have many long before us.

What Does Travel on a Cargo Ship Feel Like?

A far more intimate and relaxed experience than you might imagine! The experience on board contrasts sharply with the rough and industrial outward appearance a container ship tends to project. You will be one of a handful of passengers among a crew likely to number up to a dozen or a few more. There will be no evening cabaret shows as on a standard cruise, though you may have access to TV, video, and board games in a common area on the ship where passengers may meet the crew. You may even play cards with the crew under the night skies. You might be invited to karaoke with the sailors, and you will almost always dine alongside the captain, who is far more likely to turn up in shorts and a t-shirt than in full uniform. Some cargo ships also offer equipped exercise rooms or pools.

Here was our first taste of the wonders of sea travel. Our introduction to freighter travel was a relatively short 5-day sailing between Australia and New Zealand. We joined the French ship CMA CGM Utrillo in the busy port of Melbourne, where our luggage — including two bicycles and bags — was quickly hauled on board and into a spacious cabin by a host of cheery Filipino deckhands.

What are the Costs of Cargo Ship Travel?

Depending upon your destination (Transatlantic, Transpacific, South Seas, Worldwide, and other special combinations), your daily freighter travel costs will be about $100-$130 per day per person per day with a luggage allowance of approximately 30kg-100kg (66-220lbs) depending on the line you are taking. Generally, US dollars are the primary currency used onboard to buy soft drinks, snacks, beer, and toiletries. You can then use your credit cards at each location you disembark.

What kind of Hospitality Can You Expect on Board?

Our next surprise was how quickly we felt part of the family. Just moments after arriving, our fellow passenger (a French woman "going around the world in 80 days”) hinted that the captain was sure to throw us a welcome barbecue. “He does that for every one new,” she said with a wink. Sure enough, the next evening was spent on the back deck of the ship, feasting on grilled fish and chatting with the seamen as the sun went down.

One of our concerns before sailing was that we'd find the days long. It was just the opposite. There were three square meals a day (hearty plates of meat and vegetables for workers) and our time between eating was filled with strolls around the deck and trips up to the bridge to check our position and ask questions.

Had there ever been stowaways? Yes, once a harmless passenger was allowed to board. What about pirates? Not here, but there were off the coast of Africa. And just how much fuel did a cargo ship need? In the current era of relatively low oil prices, $60,000 U.S. a day will generally cover the trip.

Why is it a Relaxing Way to Travel?

With our curiosity temporarily curbed, we would return to our cabin for reading our books or Kindle, journal writing, and a bit of table tennis if we felt especially energetic. Far away from the hustle and bustle of life on firm land, we were truly relaxed. The experience was in complete contrast to our usual hurried airplane trips.

For Hamish Jamieson, the owner of Freighter Travel NZ and one of only a handful of travel agents in the world licensed to book tickets on cargo ships, the simplicity of being at sea is the main attraction.

“When you're sitting up the front of the bow of the ship, on your own, and all you see is the sea going past and you hear the wind and waves, you're in heaven. For me, an afternoon...sitting right on the bow, watching the world go by with my binoculars, that's my heaven,” he said.

What Kind of Flexibility is Needed for Freighter Travel?

Of course, nothing in life is all smooth sailing. While we didn't encounter any problems during our trip, we did struggle with the uncertain nature of freighter travel before we boarded. Our initial departure date jumped forward first by three days and then seemed to bounce around by 12-24 hours every time we called to check the latest news. Ours was not an uncommon experience and you must prepare yourself for flexibility.

Even ports of call are not guaranteed because on a cargo ship, freight comes first, not the passengers. If the demand is not there for a certain stop, the ship will go where the business is.

“Our trip from the USA to Europe changed three times after initial booking,” said Rebecca Hogue and Scott Drennan, then on a journey around the world without using airplanes . Their initial trip from South Carolina to Belgium was from Florida to Italy. “Had we not been flexible with our departure times and locations, things would not have worked out.”

As Mr. Jamieson is fond of telling his passengers, when you go to sea, there are two things you must pack: a sense of humor and a sense of patience.

What are the Practical Issues?

Your trip may also involve some red tape, particularly concerning U.S. stops. American citizens are not permitted, for example, to travel within their country by cargo ship, although they can make international journeys. Meanwhile, travelers to the United States must have a visa, even if they would not need one to arrive by air. Only Canadians are exempt from this rule.

Be sure to budget time and money to get vaccinations like Yellow Fever if you are going through the Suez and Panama canals. A medical certificate declaring you in generally good health is another typical requirement.

Where in the World Do You Want to Go?

The hardest part of booking your cargo ship voyage is deciding where to go. Will it be to South America and around Cape Horn? How about a 55-day round trip from California to Australia and New Zealand via Tahiti and Mexico? Mr. Jamieson offers a few more ideas and favorite voyages based on years of experience.

“For me the ultimate voyage is from Auckland, in New Zealand, to Singapore. It takes 40-45 days to sail what you can fly in just under 12 hours but it visits nearly every island in the Pacific on the way and it stops for 2-3 days. The second choice for me would be from Singapore through to Houston in Texas. It goes up through Thailand, Vietnam, half a dozen ports in China, into Japan, then straight across the Pacific and through the Panama Canal.”

With enough time and money at your disposal--round-the-world trips can take 80 to 100 days or more--there are few places a cargo ship can't reach. Voyage destinations on cargo ships can change, so the many options available will often surprise you. You need to be adventurous enough to do your research, find a specialized cargo ship travel agent (see resources below), and then get on board.

The Golden Rules of Cargo Ship Travel

  • Be prepared to make your own fun. There are seldom programmed activities aside from the odd safety drill.
  • Go before you're too old. An upper age limit of 77-80 years is not uncommon, as no doctor on board and there are often plenty of stairs.
  • Check that your travel insurance covers freighter travel.
  • Be flexible. Schedules can and do change frequently. You may need 2-3 ships to reach your destination.
  • Book in advance. Cabins are limited and the most popular routes can be sold out by ships months ahead.
  • Forget about working in exchange for your passage. Current union rules mean this is no longer permitted.
  • Take a good supply of seasickness pills. While not very common, rough weather can occur, sending tables, chairs, and your stomach flying across the room.
  • Wifi and other modern electronics are now often available on cargo ships for travelers . If connectivity is important to you, ask whether those options are accessible and free in advance.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Hiking Know-How

Although summer is the best time to visit New Zealand in terms of warm weather, it's also the busiest season for domestic and international visitors. This means less accommodation options and higher prices. The shoulder season of autumn is a better option, as you have the bonus of falling leaves, while spring is known for its unstable and windy conditions. If hiking is on the agenda, remember to pack quality hiking boots and layers, as some of the Great Walks have notoriously temperamental weather. A waterproof and windproof jacket will save you while cruising around New Zealand, particularly in the cooler months.

New Zealand Welcomes Cruise Ships Back as Borders Fully Reopen

Cruise ships can return to New Zealand after more than 2 years.

ship travel to new zealand

New Zealand dropped restrictions on cruise ships over the weekend, more than two years after the start of the pandemic and just months after the country started welcoming international travelers.

The decision to once again allow cruise ships, which the government outlined on Sunday, comes as part of a larger easing of border restrictions in which the country will welcome travelers from non-visa waiver countries. New Zealand first reopened to vaccinated tourists in May , including from the United States, before dropping pre-arrival testing rules for those vaccinated visitors in June.

New Zealand will continue to require that all tourists be fully vaccinated to enter.

"Today's change in border settings marks the final milestone for our reconnecting strategy," the government said in a statement. "This is great news to the tourism industry and economy as we approach spring and summer with people from the Northern hemisphere booking their winter holidays. We have heard optimistic messages from tourism operators who are ready to welcome back international visitors from all over the world."

The return of cruise ships, which comes ahead of New Zealand's popular summer tourist season of October to April, is expected to be a boost to the economy. Pre-pandemic, cruise travelers spent more than $500 million per year, the government noted.

Travelers who arrive in the country by ship will be subject to the same vaccination rules as those arriving by air, according to the government . Children 16 years old and younger are exempt.

Travelers will have to provide proof of their vaccination status to their booking agent or the operator as well as "comply with New Zealand's domestic COVID-19 requirements around mask-wearing, and testing."

The decision to ease border restrictions comes weeks after neighboring Australia dropped all pandemic-related border rules . It also follows Australia's move in April to eliminate restrictions on cruise ships into and within Australian territory.

New Zealand Cargo Ship Travel

Freighter travel agency cargoholidays, cargoholidays the best freight cruise arround for new zealand cargo ship travel.

One thing is clear: Given that you’ll be taking on the role of a passenger rather than that of a customer, you won’t find the usual conveniences on a cargo ship. There will be neither entertainers nor leisure programs or wellness amenities. The crew serves the ship and the cargo – not the passengers. Shore excursions are possible, but only permitted when agreed upon with the ship management and provided the route and schedule allow for it. Then, if you don’t return from your trip in time, the ship might put back out to sea without you. On the other hand, the ship is not obligated to stick to the port layover times stated at the point of booking, since these depend not only on the prevailing weather conditions, but also on the loading and unloading operations and the number of available cranes and manpower. Hence, layovers can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days – flexibility is of the essence.

Freighter travel is different from using ropax ferries, which often live on the cargo, but follow passenger ship regulations to be able to ship the truck drivers as well and have other passengers as a supplemental income. These are much more like cruise ferries, although sometimes quite spartan. It is a common myth that freighter travel is cheaper than other forms of transportation, but save for a select number of regional freighters, this is essentially never the case. The overhead of carrying supplies and setting aside rooms is quite significant for New Zealand Cargo Ship Travel, compared to a long-haul flight. Comparing is difficult of course: are you paying for transport, or for food, accommodation and the experience to go for New Zealand Cargo Ship Travel?

What’s it like to go for New Zealand Cargo Ship Travel ? The level of luxury is dependent on the carrier. Some have DVD players and state-of-the-art entertainment facilities, others have VHS and a ping pong table, but if it’s an experience you’re after then you couldn’t ask for more. Food varies from ship to ship (often depending on the nationality of the crew), and you will probably eat in the officer’s mess along with the more senior crew onboard.

AdobeStock 344566703 - New Zealand Cargo Ship Travel

Freighter ship travel can at times be an emotional rollercoaster as it’s quite unlike anything you’ve done before. Everyone’s experience will be different but you’re certainly in for the adventure of a lifetime. we’ve first-hand experience of this alternative way to travel. It can be lonely if you travel alone and sometimes deadly boring, but with a stash of good books and a willingness to engage with the crew the time will soon be slipping away.

If you’re tempted to reach your next travel destination by container ship, be prepared to bring a lot of time – and you will be rewarded with memories beyond comparison. Trade in narrow rows of seats, endless queues, tight sightseeing schedules and fleeting impressions for a newfound type of peace and quiet, a novel sensation of distance and the priceless luxury of getting to know the ocean in its most beautiful manifestations.

Freighter Travel (NZ) Introduction

Freighter Travel (NZ) welcome you to the exciting world of Freighter Voyaging—seeing the world from a bulk cargo or container vessel with our international voyages from New Zealand.

Freighter Travel is here to advise you on all aspects of freighter voyages from New Zealand and will assist you in planning a trip to remember.

A voyage on a cargo ship could be the most rewarding experience of your lifetime. You can visit places you have only dreamed about, where traditional voyage ships may not call and return home with a store of adventures and memories to cherish.

Voyage as a passenger with the merchant marine and savor the tranquility and elements of the ocean without the hustle and bustle of a voyage ship.

You get all the benefits of excellent accommodation and meals; the opportunity to get to know the crew, the workings of the ship; and an almost endless choice of destinations or ports of call.

Some cargo ships have a swimming pool and gymnasium which are shared with the ships crew and/or officers.

Because the ship is already sailing whether you're on it or not, the travel is considered carbon-neutral, perfect for those who are after a green-travel option.

Our National and International Voyages from New Zealand

Freighter Travel NZ International Voyages

Voyage Duration – You can cruise on a freighter for as long or as short as you wish—from a 120-day round the world voyage, down to 14-day voyage from Tauranga to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and back to Auckland—the possibilities are many and varied.

Options – Freighter Travel has the facility through our Bonded Travel Agency to combine your voyage with air travel or a land-based tour or holiday.

This allows you to join any passenger cargo ship at your chosen port of call, and to disembark at the time and destination to suit your plans. You have the option of including a short voyage while you are overseas, flying to and from your voyage, voyaging to your destination and flying home, or vice-versa.

If your preference is for more than one voyage to see specific ports of call, we can arrange your connecting flights, rental car, accommodation and/or tours between voyages. We can also arrange any documentation that you may require.

At sea the day is yours to do as you choose. Relaxing or exercising on deck, mixing with passengers or crew, dining, spending time on the bridge, learning how the ship is controlled and navigated—all combine into a pleasant, leisurely routine.

Dress Code – At sea there is generally a breeze, so a windbreaker jacket is strongly recommended. Comfortable, practical footwear, sweaters and slacks are suitable. Dress is generally informal, but passengers will be advised as to dress code for each particular ship when booking.

Going Ashore – With the correct documentation, going ashore at ports of call is simple. Take your passport ashore and some local currency—the ship's master or chief steward will help with this. Always check the sailing time before leaving the ship. In large ports take careful note of the dock area and the name or number of the ship's berth. It is advisable to be mindful of the country's traditions and dress codes, particularly for women in Eastern countries. Although a ship's turnaround in port may in some cases be a matter of hours, it is amazing what can be seen ashore in this time.

Itinerary Options

One of the great advantages of traveling by cargo ship is the amazing flexibility available to you, the passenger.

International Voyages New Zealand

You can join the ship for as long as you wish. You may even choose to disembark from one ship, spend a week ashore at a place of your choice, and then join another ship for the rest of your voyage. Passengers on the Grimaldi Line can disembark at one port and rejoin another ship one, two or three weeks later as these ships operate a regular weekly service.

Some other options you may like to consider are:

Fly—Interlude—Voyage – Fly to the country from which your voyage leaves, take some time to explore the area, then join your ship for your voyage home, arriving fresh and relaxed from your time at sea. Example: fly to England, explore the United Kingdom, join your ship and sail home via the Suez or Panama canal calling at up to nine ports before stepping ashore in New Zealand.

Voyage—Interlude—Fly – Or reverse the arrangement and arrive at your destination totally energized and ready to start sight-seeing! A voyage from Auckland via Noumea, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Singapore, Jeddah, Suez Canal, Malta La Spezia to London, England has enough interest to satisfy the most experienced traveller.

Fly—Interlude—Voyage—Interlude—Fly – Taking a voyage between touring different countries is an excellent method of having a rest and giving yourself time to assimilate all you have seen before beginning another section of your holiday. For example, take an fourteen day voyage from Monfalcone to Pireaus, Ashdod, Haifa, Izmir, Ravenna, Koper and back to Northern Italy port of Monfalcone—14 days for only 780 Euros per person. Other interesting trips are available around the Mediterranean.

Freighter Voyage Fares

The cost of a freighter voyage is calculated on the basis of a daily rate, with most voyages priced between US$100 - US$130 per day. This daily rate is much cheaper than ordinary voyage ships, which usually charge around US$200 - US$400 per day.

Although the daily rate is cheaper, freighter voyages tend to be much longer than regular voyages. This means that a freighter voyage will usually cost more than a typical 1 or 2 week standard voyage vacation.

You can find more information about Freighter Voyage Fares here .

Cathedral Cove Boats

Who needs to complete a declaration

Travellers (including passengers and crew) arriving by sea on any maritime vessel need to complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD):

  • Recreational vessel, yacht or small craft
  • Diplomatically cleared
  • New Zealand Defence Force.

There are some exemptions to this, including people who arrive in New Zealand after having been medically evacuated, rescued at sea, or on a temporary basis due to weather conditions.

How to start a declaration

Travellers arriving by sea on any maritime vessel can complete a declaration using the  online form.

Cruise travellers can also complete a declaration using the  NZTD app .

Once you have started your declaration, you will be emailed a reference number that you can use to review, complete or make changes to a declaration.

Please note: The NZTD app is only available for air travellers and cruise travellers, it is not yet available for other maritime travellers. Other maritime travellers can use the online form .

Submitting your declaration

The earliest you can submit your declaration is 24 hours before departing the vessel’s last foreign port prior to arriving in New Zealand.

You need to submit your declaration by the time the vessel has berthed at its first port in New Zealand.

Once you have submitted your declaration, you will receive another email that includes information on what you need to know to enter New Zealand, based on what you have told us.

You do not need to print anything out.

Changing your declaration

You can use the reference number that has been emailed to you to review, complete or make changes to your declaration.

You will need to resubmit your declaration if you make any changes to it.

If you start your declaration in the online form, you must view, update or submit it there. If you start your declaration in the NZTD app, you can view, update or submit your declaration in the app or the online form.

When you arrive

Your digital declaration is linked to your passport and is checked when you arrive in New Zealand.

Your vessel may be inspected. If you have forgotten to declare something, you will need to talk to a border officer.

If you have forgotten to declare something, you will need to talk to a border officer. If you are carrying a restricted or prohibited item and do not declare it, you may be fined or prosecuted.

UPDATED SPRING 2024

Travelling on a cargo ship is a unique experience.  Whether you love the sea, are conscious of your carbon footprint, don't like flying or simply prefer to sail in a relaxed atmosphere, away from the crowds, then travelling by cargo ship is the right choice for you.

We've been doing this for over 30 years and are passionate about providing a personalised service tailored to your needs.

Alas, since the pandemic and with only a few exceptions, deep sea intercontinental voyages are no longer possible; shipowners and/or their charterers have withdrawn this discretionary activity, we are seeing little enthusiasm from them to resume the activity any time soon.

That means:

- No transatlantic voyages

- No Australia/New Zealand/Europe voyages

- No Europe/South America voyages

- No transpacific voyages

- No round the world voyages

- No voyages in around Asia or Oceania

However, still possible are:

- short haul European, Mediterranean, Baltic are bookable however 2024 availability is already limited on some routes.

- Europe/South Africa/Europe voyages but are fully booked well into 2025; waitlisting/standby is possible for additional cargo induced voyages on a rolling 6-week basis.

- French Polynesian voyages (mv Aranui V)

- mv Bella Desgagnes (St Lawrence River, Canada)

- mv St Helena, global voyages supporting the Extreme E organisation are available but bookable only close to departure.

There may be cruise ship alternatives, please ask if you have a specific voyage in mind as several Voyage Options are possible on some of the routes popular with cargo ship travellers. Note please that owing to the restrictive policies of the major cruise lines, in most cases you may only book cruises through a travel agent in your country of residence.

Do please take some time to check our website for available routes, also our ‘Ask the Captain’ section for frequently asked questions BEFORE contacting us!

Our website is updated regularly with currently bookable options; please do not contact us regarding deep sea international cargo voyages that are not listed as without the support and co-operation of willing shipowners we can no longer viably respond.

Try us and travel the world your way!

South Island & Fiords of New Zealand Itinerary

The South Island & Fiords of New Zealand cruise begins in Bluff and cruises west to Fiordland before cruising along the east coast of New Zealand’s south island to end in  Wellington.

Route map of South Island & Fiords of New Zealand cruise from Bluff to Wellington with visits along the east coast, Milford Sound & Stewart Island.

Enjoy a complimentary transfer by coach from Queenstown check-in to board at 4:00pm at Bluff, New Zealand. There is time to settle into your stateroom before a 5:00pm departure towards Dusky Sound, cruising past Solander Island. Spend the day exploring the ship and all her facilities. Take in the sights while enjoying captain’s welcome drinks and meet your crew and fellow passengers.

Coral Adventurer

On your day at sea, cruise past Solander Island. The Solander Islands, with the Māori name Hautere translating to ‘flying wind,’ are a trio of uninhabited volcanic islets that lie just beyond New Zealand’s South Island. Aboard the Endeavour , Captain James Cook spotted the islands in early 1770, and was named after a Swedish scientific crew member on board, Daniel Solander. The islands have only been known to be inhabited briefly due to marooning or shipwreck.

With one third of the wildlife on the islands being incredibly rare, the bulk of the species include ferns and orchids. Birds known to call the islands home include fernbirds, snipe and white-fronted terns with the islands being declared an Important Bird Area as it is a breeding site for common diving petrels and Buller’s albatrosses amassing some 5000 pairs. The area is well-known for whale migration with sightings of extraordinarily large sperm whales.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Fiordland National Park, a World Heritage site once described as the Eighth Wonder of the World, is characterized by 14 fiords carving through just about 135 miles of coastline. These fiords were carved by glaciers over thousands of years and feature waterfalls cascading down sheer cliffs, rainforest cloaking steep ridges and granite peaks reflected in deep shimmering waters.

These mostly inaccessible and awe-inspiring landscapes were the mysterious source of powerful  pounamu (New Zealand jade), gathered by Maori from the riverbeds and boulders of the South Island — the only place it occurs.  While some European settlers took shelter here, the deep isolation and rugged terrain thwarted all except the toughest from staying. Many of the flora and fauna species have developed in relative isolation, so many of the diverse plants and animals are unique to the area.

Enter Fiordland National Park at dramatic Tamatea/Dusky Sound and cruise among towering cliffs and sheer granite walls of Facile Harbor. Pass some of the 365 small islands and explore the depths of the inlets in Zodiacs.  Inaccessible by road, Tamatea/Dusky Sound is the largest and most complex of the Fiordland Sounds. It is also a designated Important Bird Area for the fiordland penguins that breed here. Encounter the fur seals again at Luncheon Cove.

This afternoon, enter Milford Sound/Piopiotahi to a world-famous view of Mitre Peak, rising some 1,600 feet. Its triangular silhouette rises opposite beautiful Stirling Falls, falling from the top of a 532-foot-high cliff between two towering ridges into the inky dark water. You may have a chance to feel the spray from the waterfall—according to Maori legend, it will make you ten years younger! The steep overhanging cliffs are awe-inspiring while cruising to Harrison Cove, where an ancient glacier entered the fiord, and visiting Bowen Falls.

Doubtful Sound/Patea is the deepest and widest fiord, flanked by towering cliffs and adorned by cascading waterfalls. The stillness and silence of this fiord is compelling and unforgettable. Cruise into Doubtful Sound/Patea and past the outer Seal Islands, Nee Islets and through “the Gut,” before cruising by Blanket Bay and into Te Awa-o-Tū/Thomson Sound. Possibly spot fur seals lounging on the rocks, pods of dolphins and the Fiordland penguin.

Known in Maori mythology as  Te Punga o Te Waka—” The Anchor Stone of Maui’s Canoe”—Stewart Island (Rakiura) is New Zealand’s little known third island. Apart from the communities on the island, many people never venture to remote Stewart Island. Nearby Ulva Island is also found within the Rakiura National Park, offering a predator-free environment for rare and endangered birds including South Island saddleback, Stewart Island weka, New Zealand pigeon/kereru, South Island kaka, yellow- and red-crowned parakeet (Kakariki), morepork, rifleman (New Zealand’s smallest bird), New Zealand fantail, South Island tomtit, Stewart Island robin, yellowhead (Mohoua), brown creeper, grey warbler, New Zealand bellbird and tui.

Spend 2 days interacting with local communities, exploring national parks, and spotting some of the endemic and endangered local wildlife.

Dunedin, settled in and around an ancient volcanic crater, is known for its Scottish and Maori heritage. Named after the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh, the city’s heritage buildings, cathedrals share a charming old-world atmosphere. Dunedin City is regarded as New Zealand’s architectural heritage capital.

The Otago Peninsula is an area of exceptional diversity. Be welcomed with sights of the world’s only mainland breeding colony of northern royal albatross and a colony of the rare yellow-eyed penguin. There will be a choice of included excursions with local operators—choose between a coach tour of the Otago Peninsula or Dunedin City Highlights. Alternatively, take time to explore the city at your leisure; perhaps visit the famous Speight’s Brewery, art gallery, or New Zealand’s oldest botanic gardens.

This morning, sail into the long harbor of Akaroa, formed by the breached volcanic crater that makes up the Banks Peninsula. The village of Akaroa has the unique identity of being the only French settlement in New Zealand, and its charming cottages and French street names still carry that identity today.

Ringed by the pastoral rolling hills of the Peninsula, the scenic village was once a bustling whaling outpost. Here, choose one of two included excursions — a harbor cruise with a local operator to spot marine wildlife or a visit to a traditional hill country farm operated by 7 th generation descendants of the earliest French Settlers on Banks Peninsula. Also enjoy free time to explore the scenic village and visit cafes inspired by French cuisine. A variety of short walks are available into the surrounding nature reserves, such as a walk to Newton’s Waterfall, guided by the expedition team.

Surronded by the breathtaking snow-dusted Seaward Kaikoura Ranges, the picturesque town of Kaikoura is renowned as possibly the best whale watching destination in the world. Kaikoura is one of the very few places it is possible to observe the sperm whale! Aboard a small specialized vessel, explore the ocean in search of these amazing mammals, as well as fur seals, dusky and Hector’s dolphins and other migratory whales.

Kaikoura means “to eat crayfish,” and there may be the opportunity to taste the seafood available here. Also have the opportunity to walk through this small town and visit the museums, galleries and cafes before joining the expedition team on a guided walk over the peninsula to marvel at the spectacular scenery.

The ancient river valleys that form the Marlborough Sounds make up 20% of New Zealand’s coastline. The webs of sunken channels are surrounded by forest-cloaked peaks and vineyards, all of which present a breathtaking view from any perspective. This lush region produces much of New Zealand’s seafood, and 80% of its wine. The fertile soil in this region supported the country’s first known Polynesian settlement in the late 1200s AD at Wairau Bar.

Anchor at historic Ship Cove on your first morning here, before spending the day exploring Queen Charlotte Sound. Over the next 2 days discover the dolphins and seals of the sounds with marine spotting from the Xplorer tender vessel and enjoy wonderful birdwatching on walks through Motuara Island birdlife sanctuary. Be guided by your expedition team and lecturers; there will be options to hike a section of the spectacular Queen Charlotte Track, or shorter walks available. The history of the region is also brought to life with your visit to Ship Cove, where informative storyboards tell of Captain Cook’s time here.

This morning, arrive in Wellington to disembark at 8:00am. Take an included transfer to Wellington’s central business district or the airport.

Accommodations as booked; group transfers during the cruise; all meals onboard; 24-hour coffee and tea; captain’s welcome and farewell drinks; showcase wines and selected beers with lunch and dinner service; excursions and sightseeing; daily lectures and briefings; use of Xplorer and Zodiac tender vessels; all entrance fees to National Parks, ports, traditional owner fees and charges imposed by governing authorities; use of all onboard facilities, including comprehensive range of library and video resources; standard Wifi on board; expedition photos captured during the voyage; tips and gratuities.

ship travel to new zealand

Are you considering sea travel from Australia to New Zealand? Want to know if there is an Australia to New Zealand Ferry? The trans-Tasman trip is longer and more expensive than flying but if you want to take to the ocean, this is what you need to consider before travelling to New Zealand by ferry, boat or cruise.

Australia’s East Coast and New Zealand’s West Coast (Including the capital city, Auckland) are separated by a large body of water called the Tasman Sea (Māori: Te Tai-o-Rēhua ). The shortest distance between Australia and New Zealand (from Sydney and Auckland) is ≈1,339 miles (or ≈ 2,156 kilometres ).

It is not possible to swim across ‘the ditch’, despite many tongue-in-cheek forum posts online!

Is There An Australia To New Zealand Ferry?

No, there is no Australia to New Zealand ferry for passengers at this time . There are other options, though.

Passenger boat travel to New Zealand from Australia was common until the 1960s. Now, with regular flights, there isn’t enough demand. As I wrote about in this post , more vehicles than people make the journey.

Yet, there are still ways to travel by sea between Australia to New Zealand, including cruise and cargo ships, private boats and sailboats.

Let’s explore each of these in more detail.

How To Travel To New Zealand By Sea

Cruise ship.

Cruises are a great option for those who want a slower, scenic route by sea from Australia to New Zealand. Just like hotels, they range from 2.5 to 5 stars, with luxury cruises including everything from theatre productions, gourmet dining and even ice-skating rinks! Operators include Princess, Carnival, Viking and P&O Cruises.

Searching on Cruise Critic , the cheapest cruise was an 11-day round trip from Sydney, stopping at Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington, among others – for $963 AUD. I found an 8-day one-way trip from Sydney to Auckland for ≈$2000 AUD and a 15-day one-way trip from Sydney to Auckland for ≈$9000 AUD. You may be able to find a short, cheaper cruise without additional tourist stops. Consider Repositioning Cruises , one-way trips where cruise ships move from one destination to another in the off-season.

How Long Is A Cruise From Australia To New Zealand?

A cruise from Australia to New Zealand takes, on average, 7-14 days.

Many cruises stop at a number of destinations along Australia’s East Coast and the New Zealand coastline. You can choose to only travel one way, alighting in NZ, or stay on board for the return journey. Just be aware that if you book a round trip (called a ‘closed loop’) from Australia to New Zealand, you cannot leave the ship and disembark in New Zealand without making this arrangement beforehand, so mention this (“I want to travel one-way ONLY”) when booking.

Cargo Ship/Merchant Ship/Freighter Voyage Travel

An alternative to a cruise is to travel with a cargo, merchant (or ‘freighter’) ship.

You will travel alongside cargo en route to Australasia and Asia, for approximately half the price of an organised passenger cruise. This type of travel, known as freighter travel, has been negatively affected by the pandemic and is still not to pre-pandemic travel levels of operation, with Freighter Travel NZ stating that they are still not running in 2023.

Some companies still have passenger services listed, including a 5-day journey between Brisbane – Auckland (and onto China) for ≈$1000 AUD (Including meals/cabin) departing every 7 weeks, but I can’t confirm this 100%.

Travelling to New Zealand from Australia this way may become increasingly common again in the next few years.

Sail/Hire a Boat/Yacht

Experienced sailors can hire a boat to travel from Australia to New Zealand.

Sailing alone is not an option for beginners due to distance and challenges regarding water conditions. If you’re really keen – you can hire a captain for the journey. Costs and duration vary widely but expect to spend $1000 AUD or more per day for your own sailing captain, according to quotes. If you want to sail from Australia to New Zealand yourself, you might find this guide from Improve Sailing helpful.

Sailo “ …make boat rentals easy and accessible to everyone, [with] 30,000+ [boats and yachts] in over 700 locations worldwide.” Check them out and compare prices.

Be Part of a Yacht/Sailing Crew

Experienced sailors can work or volunteer to be part of a sailing crew. Aussie & Kiwi Yacht Crew list crewing opportunities. To maximise your chances, join as many online groups/forums as you can and ask around to find out who is leaving from your location. You may need to be flexible with your dates and departure location.

Kayak from Australia to New Zealand

Theoretically, you can kayak from Australia to New Zealand, but only a handful have ever done so successfully. Some who tried, sadly, didn’t make it. Only recommended for the truly adventurous and prepared.

Can you travel to New Zealand by sea?

As you’ve seen, yes, you can travel to New Zealand by sea but it is slower and more expensive than flying. Economy flights cost between $300 – $1000 AUD one way, while sea travel starts from ≈$1000-2000 AUD.

There are also a few considerations before travelling to New Zealand by sea:

According to the New Zealand Government (as of 2022), “ New Zealand’s maritime border is fully open “, but check the Unite Against COVID-19 website for more information regarding vaccination requirements.

See the Unite Against COVID-19 website for more information regarding visa requirements, which are different depending on the type of vessel that you arrive on: Cruise Ship, Commercial Vehicle or Recreational Vessels, Yachts and Small Craft.

How to travel from Australia to New Zealand?

Most travellers avoid expensive sea travel from Australia to New Zealand, choosing to take a flight from the East Coast cities of Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne (flights from Adelaide, Darwin and Perth are also available).

How long is a direct flight to New Zealand?

A direct flight from Sydney, Australia to Auckland, New Zealand is approximately 3 hours.

Is sea travel from Australia to New Zealand a good idea?

If you’re looking for a scenic alternative to flying, sea travel may just be for you.

Cargo/Freight travel has been restricted during the pandemic but if you can still find a provider, this is a different option for those who don’t want to fly.

Cruises from Australia to New Zealand are good for those who are happy to take a week or more to travel slowly. Depending on the cruise, you may be able to stop in multiple ports and/or participate in activities along the way.

Sailing there yourself (solo or as part of a crew) is really only an option for experienced sailors or those who are willing to take the time to learn. While not a common choice, if you are really determined to travel by sea to New Zealand – there is significant private sea traffic in both directions – but this is not readily advertised. You would need to research further into requirements and costs.

Now you know a bit more about how to travel by sea to New Zealand from Australia, you can compare and consider your options… and you never know, you might be admiring the blue horizon before you know it.
