Ocho Rios is a Caribbean port town in Jamaica's Saint Ann Parish. The town has population around 17,000, and is located on the island's northern coast. Jamaica's other large cruise ports are Falmouth and Montego Bay (on the north coast) as well as Kingston/Port Royal (on the southeastern coast).
Outside the town, residents and tourists can visit Columbus Park, the site where Columbus supposedly came on land, and see Spanish colonial buildings and maritime artifacts. Once a fishing village, today Ocho Rios caters to tourists. The town is a port of call for cruise vessels, as well as for cargo ships that load sugar and limestone.
The name of Ocho Rios (meaning "Eight Rivers" in Spanish) is a misnomer as there are not eight rivers in the region. It is most likely a British corruption of the original "Las Chorreras" ("the waterfalls" in Spanish) which name was given to Ocho Rios due to nearby Dunn's River Falls.
In the vicinity of and in downtown Ocho Rios there are several premium hotels and resorts, great restaurants, cafe bars and nightclubs. Dolphin Cove is popular for swimming with dolphins. Ocho Rios was one of the sites used for the "Dr. No" movie (1962, the first in the James Bond series).
Ocho Rios was the primary location for the "Piranha II: The Spawning" (1982 released movie), with many of the scenes being shot at Mallards Beach-Hyatt Hotel (Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort & Spa). In 2016, Rio Chico Resort (outside the city) was featured on ABC's reality TV show "The Bachelor" (20th season).
In May 2017, Jamaica's government approved a USD 30,9 million project for building a new and renovating the existing tourism-serving facilities in Ocho Rios.
- The budget included USD 19,3M for upgrading Reynolds Pier, which allowed the facility to handle larger cruise vessels. Reynolds Pier now complements Ocho Rios Pier, for which improvements (the adjacent esplanade/promenade) were allocated USD 2,1M.
- USD 0,772M were spent for the town's market renovations.
- USD 0,618M were spent for building a new artisan village facilitating craft-making and retail shops (selling locally-manufactured products).

Cruise Port Guide Ocho Rios – Jamaica: docked
Turtle bay cruise pier
Most ships dock at the Turtle Bay cruise dock. This pier was specifically build to welcome cruise ships at Ocho Rios. The dock is located in front of the town. At the end of the dock you will find a small tourist information, taxi stand, Margaritaville and a shopping road leading to town. The cruise dock is approximately a 5 minute walk or 900 meter/yard walk to the city centre.
James Bond cruise pier
Your second docking option would be the James Bond cruise pier although its official name is the Reynolds cruise pier. It was nicknamed James Bond pier because it served as the background for the film version of Dr. No. The Reynolds cruise pier is used when more than one ship is in town at the same day. It is a commercial industrial pier. The city centre is approximately a 15 minute walk along a busy road.
Taxis in Ocho Rios
Taxis are safe and readily available at both cruise docks. Most taxis are not metered. Although taxi prices are on display and should be fixed, you still have to negotiate a price before stepping into the taxi. Taxi prices are typically: From cruise terminal to downtown Ocho Rios 8 USD From cruise terminal to Dunn’s River Park 20 USD From cruise terminal to Coyaba River Garden and Museum 20 USD From cruise terminal to Shaw Park beach 20 USD From cruise terminal to San Souci 40 USD From cruise terminal to Falmouth 90 USD Taxis are a great and popular way to get around the island if you don’t want to go on a ship organised shore excursion.
Jamaican dollars
We do not encourage you to change into Jamaican dollars when visiting Ocho Rios by cruise ships. American dollars and credit cards are widely accepted.
Beaches near Ocho Rios cruise port
Your closest beach will be turtle beach. This is the beach directly to the left hand side when you walk of the pier. The beach offers nice sand, good facilities and has lots of hotels at the waterfront. And for the people that really want comfort at their doorstep: There is also a Margaritaville at the end of the Turtle bay cruise pier.
Souvenirs and shopping
There are some nice locally produced souvenirs that you can pick up like rum, batik cottons, and wood carving. The Taj Mahal centre and the craft market come recommended.

The famous waterfalls rank among the most visited attractions in Jamaica, and the best thing is they are located only a 5-minute drive (3.5 km/2 miles) from Ocho Rios cruise port. The whole complex is set in a lush forest and boasts a beautiful sandy beach and many facilities including shops, eateries, changing rooms, and more.
The waterfall itself is a major attraction – you can either climb it (the climb takes 45 minutes, the activity is considered moderately strenuous and it requires a good physical shape), or you can walk past it (there is a staircase that runs parallel to the waterfall that goes all the way down to the beach).
Useful tips :
- Water shoes are mandatory (you can buy them on-site, however, the choice is limited) and you climb the falls in a swimsuit.
- You will be given a briefing before the start, and it’s important to follow the guide’s instructions during the whole duration of the activity.
- The best way to get there is by taxi or on a guided shore excursion. Considering the short distance from the port, a taxi may be a more affordable option.

Situated only 13 km/8 miles (a 25-minute drive) southeast of Ocho Rios port, on Cascade Road in the heart of the lush rainforest, Cool Blue Hole Cascade features a natural limestone sinkhole that got its name from the deep azure hue of the water.
Numerous waterfalls, swimming holes, cliff dives, rope swings, and hiking are some of the natural wonders and activities available, and there are guided tours offered as well.
There are higher jumps for adrenaline seekers and smaller ones for those who don’t feel comfortable jumping from high up. Ocho Rios Cruise Port Guide Info
Situated in the north of Jamaica, surrounded by lush, green vegetation, and in the proximity of the island’s main natural attractions, Ocho Rios is a charming town and one of the frequent cruise destinations in Jamaica. The cruise terminal consists of two piers where large cruise ships can dock: Turtle Bay cruise pier, located in front of the town, features a small tourist information booth, shops, taxi stand, and Margaritaville at the end of the pier; James Bond cruise pier (Reynold’s Pier), located further, at around 800m (0.5 mi) from Ocho Rios downtown, is a commercial industrial pier used by both cruise and cargo ships. Reynold’s Pier doesn’t have facilities, except for the small parking area for tour buses and taxis, and the town is within 15 minutes walking distance.
Ocho Rios is a small place that has a beautiful beach in the heart of the town – Ocho Rios Bay Beach, a lovely, family-friendly sandy beach offering watersport facilities, and a few bars and restaurants. The Main Street that you can spot upon exiting the terminal area, is the longest street in Ocho Rios offering shopping and dining opportunities, as well as several city landmarks, such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the beautiful Methodist Church.
Jamaica boasts many natural attractions, and one of - Dunn’s River Falls, is located around 4 km from the Ocho Rios cruise port. Surrounded by lush tropical forest, with a beautiful sandy beach, Dunn’s River Falls are the most popular tourist attraction featuring terraced waterfall that visitors can climb on foot. The resort consists of a cafeteria, changing rooms, restrooms, and numerous shops where you can buy clothes and souvenirs. However, if you decide not to climb the waterfall, there is a path that stretches along the falls so you can take great shots of your loved ones.
Another popular tourist spot is the Dolphin’s Cove, located less than 1 km from the waterfall. This is the place where you can enjoy dolphin interactions, snorkeling with stingrays, a mini animal park, and shark feeding. They have a nice, cozy restaurant where you can delight in the local food and a gift shop that sells souvenirs.
One of the hidden gems is the Blue Hole also known as the Cool Blue Hole. This breathtaking series of natural limestone sinkhole is located near Ocho Rios. A deep cavern hidden within the tropical mountains of Jamaica, the Blue Hole gets its name from the deep blue azure hue of the water. This place is famous among visitors for swimming, cliff diving, and walking through the lush rain forest to the Secret Falls.
Mystic Mountain, featuring zip lining, sky lift, ATVs, bobsledding, waterslides, pools, and much more, is an adventure park ideal for adrenaline-seekers, located at 2.5 km from the cruise port. Ocho Rios is a beautiful and diverse place that guarantees a fun-filled and memorable stay for everyone.

The City of the Eight Rivers
Ocho Rios means eight rivers in Spanish, and it is precisely its rivers, as well as its crystalline sea, that are its main characteristics; characteristics that will not disappoint visitors to Jamaica wishing to immerse themselves in the lush vegetation of these marvelous dream locations.
Just like a mirage, the white buildings of Ochos Rios seems to appear unexpectedly from lush vegetation covering the coast. On Main Street, you will be able to shop or pass your day on solid ground. However, during your cruise to Jamaica and Caribbean sea , we suggest you try the many outdoor activities offered on its rivers, such as kayaking and tubing. With an MSC excursion , you will be able to admire the Konoko Falls & Gardens : an explosion of tropical plant and animal life with different aromas emanating from sinuously shaped flowers and colorful parrots at every corner. Another must-see attraction are the waterfalls along the Dunn River: almost 650 feet of natural steps over which the water flows to then fall about 200 feet directly into the sea. To enjoy this spectacle to the fullest, these enchanting waterfalls can be climbed via stairs set on either side. The beach below with its extremely fine, pure white sand is equally beautiful. The sea of Ochos Rios will also grant you the opportunity of a close encounter with a very popular sea mammal: the dolphin.

PHOTOS: Carnival cruise ship damaged after slamming into pier amid strong winds
TAMPA, Fla. ( WFLA ) — A Carnival cruise ship docked in Jamaica was left damaged after its side slammed into the side of a pier.
The Carnival Magic made contact with the pier in Ocho Rios after a pier fender — the protective structure that helps prevent ships from colliding with the pier — fell off amid strong winds on Tuesday morning.
The ship, which departed from Florida on Sunday, had docked at the pier shortly after 8 a.m. local time, a few hours before the incident took place.
Carnival Cruise Lines confirmed the incident in a statement to Nexstar’s WFLA, but said operations continued as normal following the collision.
“Carnival Magic was involved in an incident while in Ocho Rios, Jamaica on Tuesday morning, Feb. 6 when strong winds and swells caused the pier fender to collapse under pressure, and the ship made contact with the pier,” reads a statement shared by Carnival.
The cruise line said no one was injured during the incident.
For the safety of the guests and staff aboard, the ship left the area and docked at a nearby pier. All guests that were ashore were able to get back on the ship.
Carnival also said weather conditions caused several cruises to cancel their docking in the Grand Cayman on Wednesday.
The Carnival Magic left Miami on Sunday. Its itinerary included stops at the Bimini Islands and Ocho Rios before its scheduled return to Miami on Saturday.

2 crew members die on Holland America ship; fire breaks out on Carnival cruise
MIAMI — Two crew members died on board a Holland America cruise ship, and a fire broke out on a Carnival ship while both of the ships were in the Bahamas this weekend, officials said.
The two crew on the Florida-based Nieuw Amsterdam died Friday during an "accidental steam release" while it was calling at the private resort island Half Moon Cay, Holland America said in a statement on Sunday.
"There was an accidental steam release in an engineering space on board Nieuw Amsterdam, which sadly resulted in the death of two crew members," the cruise line said.
The Bahamas Maritime Authority and the Dutch Safety Board were investigating the exact cause of the release, Holland America said.
A representative of the Bahama’s Coroner’s Court did not immediately respond to a request for information, such as the crew members’ identities and the cause and manner of death.
The cruise line said the conclusions of any investigation would be taken seriously. "Safety is always our top priority, and we are working to understand what, if anything, can be learned from this tragic accident," it said.
Passenger Laine Doss said she was on board when the captain announced the deaths on the vessel's P.A. system.
"We were celebrating the last day of the cruise," she said, when the mood changed "to something extremely somber."
The captain's voice broke, she said.
"He broke down crying," Doss said. "There was a moment of silence that the captain requested. And that entire scenario did affect the entire cruise. Things were canceled, joyous events were canceled, and we really just thought about mortality — the people who perished on the ship."
Crew members were being offered counseling, Holland America said.
Dutch government inspectors determined the vessel to be "fully operable," and this was "confirmed" by the U.S. Coast Guard, the cruise line said.
A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson said she was looking into the statement and was unable to immediately confirm it.
The Nieuw Amsterdam returned Saturday to its home port of Fort Lauderdale, guests disembarked, and the vessel has embarked on a cruise with a stop in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on Monday, Holland America said.
"All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this event," the cruise line said. "We’ve been in contact with the families of both team members and are offering our support to them and to all of our crew at this difficult time."
The ship set sail out of Fort Lauderdale on March 16 for a seven-night trip.
Fire on the port-side exhaust funnel of another Florida-based cruise ship in the Bahamas, the Carnival Freedom, rocked some passengers Saturday and took the ship out of commission for repairs, the cruise line said.
No injuries were reported.
In a statement Sunday, Carnival Cruises acknowledged witness reports of a lightning strike or the sound of thunder before the fire erupted.
Passenger Heath Barnes said the ship was on a detoured path, destined for an unscheduled stop in Freeport, as a result of stormy weather and high winds when fire started.
"I was shocked," he said. "I mean, I looked out there and you're not supposed to see black smoke and fire shooting out of the tail end of the cruise."
The blaze was preceded by "the loudest thunder-lightning clap that I've ever heard in my life," Barnes said.
Ship personnel extinguished the fire, Carnival Cruises said.
The cruise line said a technical team determined the ship sustained enough damage that it will need repairs before it can be returned to scheduled cruises. The funnel was stabilized, passengers were expected to be returned to Port Canaveral, and the ship will set off to Freeport for repairs, it said.
"The damage is more than we first thought and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," Carnival Cruises said.
Passengers scheduled for those late-March cruises are being offered full refunds and credit that can be used for a future cruise, it said.
It was the second funnel fire on the Carnival Freedom since 2022.
