The Okinawa prefecture is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan and comprises over 160 islands. The chain of islands is south of Japan’s main island and is arguably Japan’s best-hidden gem.

The islands are surrounded by the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean so they can be accessed fairly conveniently from several regions throughout Asia and not just Japan.

Okinawa Honto is the Okinawa main island and is the most popular among tourists. Despite being only 110km long and 11km wide, there are plenty of sights to see and a list of fun activities in the Okinawa main island.

With its warm and comfortable climate year-round, you can enjoy the Okinawa prefecture in any season. In January, the coldest month, the average temperature in Naha (Okinawa’s capital city) is a cool 17℃, much warmer than the rest of Japan.

We recommend avoiding travelling to the Okinawa prefecture in May and early June due to heavy precipitation during the rainy season. In late June, once the rainy season has passed, it’s hot and sunny for the next few months.

We know that the most fun things to do in Okinawa involve water so it’s no surprise that surfing is pretty popular here.

Beginner-friendly waves make the Okinawa prefecture the perfect destination to try surfing for the first time.

The only thing to keep in mind is that the waves here usually break over reefs. This means that they tend to be shallow and can be dangerous if you’re completely new to surfing or are inexperienced.

We recommend going through a surf school so that you have someone showing you the proper technique, how to read and catch waves and to prevent potential injury.

Surfing is popular on the beaches around Okinawa Honto but you can also find some great waves off the coast of some of the smaller islands.

Of the places to visit in Okinawa, Sefa Utaki is one of the most sacred. It is an important sacred site of the indigenous Okinawan religion which emphasises the worship of nature.

In the early 16th century, Sefa Utaki came into prominence when it became one of the main locations for religious ceremonies and rituals.

Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sefa Utaki is located on a hillside along the ocean and features several rock formations connected by walking trails.

One of the more popular Okinawa attractions is Okinawa World, a touristy theme park dedicated to culture on Okinawa’s Main Island.

The main attractions at Okinawa World are a Gyokusendo Cave, a craft village and snake museum at Habu Park.

Gyokusendo Cave at Okinawa World is five kilometres long and is the second longest cave in Japan. Only 850 metres of the cave is open to the public and here, you can see spectacular stalactites and stalagmites.

Outside the cave are a number of souvenir stalls selling local trinkets including snake liquor, a delicacy in Okinawa.

You can learn about the habu, an aggressive and lethally venomous snake most commonly seen submerged in bottles of awamori.

In Habu Park, visitors can learn more about the snakes in various snake-themed exhibits that provide information on the ecology and history of snakes and reptiles.

Some of the more popular places of interest in Okinawa are important historical sites like various war memorials.

Towards the end of World War II, Okinawa Honto became the sites of one of the war’s bloodiest battles with an estimated 200,000 people killed in battle from April to June 1945.

There are a number of monuments and museums relating to the period. Some of the larger monuments have been constructed in the south of Okinawa Main Island where the worst fighting of the battle took place.

The main memorial to the Battle of Okinawa is the Okinawa Peace Memorial Park, located near the southern tip of the island. The Peace Memorial Museum offers a sobering overview of before, during and after the battle and how Okinawa was reconstructed.

Various monuments such as the Cornerstone of Peace and the Himeyuri Monument also commemorate fallen civilians and soldiers.

The Peace Memorial Museum is also a popular place to check out. Okinawa War Memorials are a must-see on Okinawa’s Main Island.

This is not a happy place to visit. For history buffs or those fascinated with WWII, this sombre museum is interesting and eye-opening.

The Headquarters consists of several hundred metres of underground corridors and rooms that served as the Japanese navy’s headquarters during the war.

On 6 June 1945, commanding officer Rear Admiral Ota sent a lengthy telegram to Tokyo commending the bravery and fierce resistance that Okinawans had shown in the long battle.

A few days later, he and his other officers, totalling over 175, sadly died by suicide (considered an ‘honourable death’) in the tunnels.

Yep, that’s right, pineapples. If you’re ever wondering what to do in Okinawa, it’s celebrating pineapples of course. And what other way than a theme park completed dedicated to them!

Pineapples were cultivated in Okinawa as an agricultural product for around a century but the arrival of lower-priced imported pineapples has seen the industry suffer.

The solution? Promote the fruit as a tourist attraction!

The Nago Pineapple Park is a small theme park that includes a ride on a pineapple-shaped vehicle through pineapple fields, a tropical garden and a. souvenir shop where visitors get the chance to sample some pineapple products.

At certain times of the year, you can also observe how pineapples are peeled, cut and canned in a small factory on site.

The Mihama American Village is built on former US Forces airfield and the idea behind the entertainment complex came from Seaport Village, a mall in San Diego.

At the Mihama American Village, you’ll see an instant resemblance to the West Coast of the US.

Find a unique mix of shops with anime goods stores, boutiques, restaurants, cafes, karaoke studios and a cinema at the Mihama American Village.

One of the top locations for sightseeing in the Okinawa prefecture is Shuri Castle, home to the rulers of the Ryukyu Kingdom and the name of the former capital.

Originally built in the late 1300s, Shuri Castle played an integral role in the political unification of Okinawa island. Over the centuries, wars and fires destroyed the castle multiple times with the most recent during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.

It was restored in 1958 and 1992 so visitors could continue to appreciate and enjoy the gusuku architecture of the castle which is built in the traditional Okinawan style.

Unfortunately, Shuri Castle was devastated in another fire in 2019. Nine buildings, including the Main Hall, were destroyed.

All of Japan is helping to support Okinawa rebuild the magnificent palace , and local volunteers are putting in commendable effort. Visitors to Okinawa can view the progress of the palace’s reconstruction, though it is still relatively in shambles.

Shuri Castle is meant to be finished in 2026, though there is no guarantee. However, we have left it on this list of the best things to do in Okinawa because it is still a beloved landmark and the locals are very passionate about restoring it.

Shuri Castle has risen from the ashes numerous times already, so there is a good chance this will happen again.

The gardens around the castle are still open to enjoy as well, so it may still be worth a visit!

The traditional costume from the era of the Kingdom of the Ryuku is different from the common kimonos seen today.

Visitors can try on the costumes, take photos and tour the castle. Ladies get full professional hair styling and make-up which takes around an hour.

Strolling through the complex dressed up gives you a bit of a visual idea of what it was like for the royal family in the Old Kingdom. This is a cool thing to do when you visit Okinawa.

The market is a maze of tiny alleys that interconnect into a large space of food stalls. Here, you can find a variety of ingredients including fresh fish, meat, vegetables, dried foods, daily groceries and liquor.

For a chance to sample some fresh seafood, try the mochiage system where you purchase seafood on the first floor of the market and ask for a staff of a restaurant to cook it and serve it to you on the second floor. The cost for cooking is around 500 yen each.

Zizake Yokocho is an izakaya (a restaurant where you order smaller share style dishes) on Kokusai Street. It serves Okinawan cuisine, local sake Awamori and has traditional folk song performances.

Singers take to the stage three times a day and requests from guests are welcomed. You’ll find lyrics to the folk songs that represent Okinawa on the tables to better understand the music.

Sailing hasn’t been that popular in Okinawa but more recently, it’s experiencing an upward trend.

There are now various sailing companies that offer trips to cruise around different islands in Okinawa.

Alternatively, if you are a budding sailor, you can charter your own boat and go island hopping at your own pace.

This way, you can stop by different islands in the East China Sea- many of which are uninhabited – and enjoy your own secluded paradise.

If you’re wondering what to see in Okinawa, how about some humpback whales?

A cannot-be-missed activity in Okinawa Japan is whale watching. Between January and March, the area is infamous for spotting humpback whales that swim in the waters off the southern coast.

The whales migrate from Alaska to Japan and one of the best places to see them while whale watching is around the Kerama Islands.

You can book whale watching tours which take you out on a boat to get close to these magnificent animals.

For nature enthusiasts, Kume Island is one of the best places to visit in Okinawa. Here, you’ll find a wide range of local plant and wildlife.

Yonaguni island is actually closer to Taiwan than it is to Japan’s main island of Honshū. Of the different islands in Okinawa, this is one of the most famous for its scuba diving sites.

Yonaguni is known for its incredible underwater ruins and many of the ruins here are made of solid rock, with some dated back to 8,000 years old.

If you’re an intermediate or experienced diver, this is one of the best things to do in Okinawa and can’t be missed.

There are legends about the origins of the ruins and are say that they are apart of a lost continent called Mu. Here, you’ll find rock formations that look like staircases, rooms and walls.

If you’re looking to explore some Okinawa activities away from the main island, hop over to Akajima Island, also known as Aka Island.

This picturesque and peaceful island is relatively small. It’s well known for its observation towers which offer some stunning views across the islands and wider Okinawa.

You’ll find some spectacular photo opportunities around the island. You can also go swimming, hike across the island or just relax in paradise.

Ishigaki Island is another one of Okinawa’s incredible islands, and it is famous for manta rays.

Ishigaki Island was listed in the Michelin Green Guide Japan and is the number one place for swimming with manta rays in Japan.

You’ll find crystal clear water in spots like Manta Scramble and can easily find majestic rays swimming through the seas. Snorkeling at Ishigaki Island is truly a dream!

Okinawa is a group of about 160 beautiful islands located in the southern part of Japan. Okinawa Prefecture is the southernmost part of Japan, located in the East China Sea, approximately 1,600 km away from Tokyo . How to get to Okinawa

From Tokyo, there are daily, direct flights that take you to Okinawa in less than 3 hours. This is definitely the fastest and easiest way to get to Okinawa island for an affordable price – we recommend you book well in advance. You can also take domestic flights to Okinawa from other airports such as Kansai International Airport in Osaka. In addition, there are daily direct flights to Ishigaki Island , Miyako Island , and Shimoji Island from several airports including Narita and Haneda . Okinawa Airport also offers some international connections to East Asia.

Once you arrive in Okinawa, you will need to figure out what form of transportation you will be using to get around the islands. As the public transportation system in Okinawa is not nearly as developed as the bigger cities on the mainland of Japan, most people rent a car to get around the main island. You can find many car rental shops around Naha Airport. Make sure to make a reservation online before your visit, as they are often fully booked whenever there is a holiday! If you want to travel to the more isolated islands, you can take a ferry or a domestic flight, and rent a car or bike closer to where you are staying.

Okinawa Main Island

The main island of Okinawa is home to unique places. Naha city is the prefectural capital of Okinawa and boasts many famous tourist spots such as Shurijo Castle and Naminoue Shrine . Shurijo Castle was an iconic structure in Okinawa with a long history. It was once the main castle for the Ryukyu Kingdom, which governed the island from the 15th to 19th century. It stood on a hill overlooking the Naha Port which functioned as a trade center at the time. Unfortunately, a big fire burned down most of the castle in 2019. However, it is being rebuilt and some parts are available for tourists. The reconstruction of the main castle will be completed in 2026.

If you want to try some local specialties or get souvenir gifts for your family, visit Kokusai Dori , a lively street full of great restaurants and retail shops. Also, it can be a lot of fun to experience Okinawa’s unique culture by checking out some local festivals that are held every year. For example, the Eisa festival is held during the weekend after the Okinawa Obon holiday. Young people wear traditional Okinawan clothes and dance to traditional drums. Kokusai Dori is a must-visit when you are in Naha.

At the end of World War II, Operation Iceberg took place on Okinawa Island, one of the cruelest battles during the war. It resulted in a huge amount of casualties with a few hundred thousand deaths and major destruction to the island. Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum (沖縄県平和祈念資料館) is the memorial to the Battle of Okinawa which represents the history that everyone should know about. The park is open 24 hrs and is free to enter.

Churaumi Aquarium is the biggest aquarium in Japan and the second biggest in the world. Here you can see animals living in and/or around the Okinawa sea. “Chura” derives from Okinawa’s dialect which means beautiful while “umi” means sea in Japanese. Thus, this aquarium exhibits the beautiful sea of Okinawa. Ishigaki Island

After spending a couple of days in the city of Naha, fly to Ishigaki Island to have a relaxing experience out in the beautiful nature! Ishigaki Island is one of the most popular remote islands that Okinawa has to offer. It is the 3rd largest island in Okinawa and is located about 410 km southwest of Naha.

Ishigaki has some of Okinawa’s and Japan’s best white sandy beaches that you don’t want to miss out on. One of the most popular and family-friendly beaches is Sukuji Beach, which has lots of shallow areas. Yonehara Beach in the east part of Kabira Bay has some of the clearest water on the island.

As Okinawa is made up of islands, there are endless places where you can enjoy various marine sports and activities. Ishigaki in particular is great for this, and you will certainly be amazed by the beautiful ocean, which is perfect for marine sports such as SUP, diving, and snorkeling. Taketomi Island and Kohama Island

Ishigaki is also close to Taketomi Island and Kohama Island . Taketomi is a small island with traditional houses and sandy beaches. If you are interested in learning more about the history of Okinawan culture, you will want to visit Taketomi as the original Ryukyu culture is very well-preserved.

You will feel like you have traveled back to ancient times when you pass the traditional houses and visit the traditional festivals in Taketomi. It is also a rather small island, which means you can move around the island by bicycle or even ride on a water buffalo carriage! It also has beautiful beaches on the west side of the island.

Kohama Island is known for its sugar cane fields, the bright green sugar cane fields spread out around the island are a beautiful contrast with the clear blue sea and white sandy beaches! Taketomi Island and Kohama Island are both accessible by ferry from Ishigaki Island and offer a relaxing experience to those who prefer small, calm islands away from the bigger crowds.

Miyakojima is another remote island with some of the best beaches in all of Japan. It is situated approximately 300 km southwest of Naha and is widely known for its beautiful beaches and coral reefs. Yonaha Maehama Beach is a beautiful white sand beach, stretching about 7 km. Take a relaxing stroll along the sandy beach while taking in the scenic beauty and feeling the sea breeze.

Irabu-Ohashi Bridge , which is 3,540m long, is one of the longest bridges in Japan. It connects Miyakojima with another beautiful island called Irabu Island and can be a lot of fun to drive over if you have a car.

Iriomote Island

Iriomote Island is the 2nd largest island among the Okinawa islands. Most of the island is undeveloped with more than 90% of the island being jungle and mangrove forests. Only about 2,400 people live in the coastal parts of the island which is described as one of the treasure boxes of nature. Thanks to its unique geographical features, there are a large variety of activities and experiences that you can take advantage of. Join exciting tours which take you to the mangroves full of wildlife. Options include boat cruises, SUP, and canoeing among other things. If you are looking for something more exciting, go trekking through the scenic rivers and gorges or join a highly-recommended jungle cruise.

Scuba diving is also a good choice to explore the beautiful sea . You don’t need to have a scuba diving license, and an instructor will be with you the whole time to support and guide you during your dive. From Ishigaki Island, Iriomote Island is accessible by taking a ferry that runs only four times a day. 

Yonaguni Island is located at the westernmost point of Japan, located about 110 km away from the Taiwanese coast. It is well known for its amazing scenic spots with the beautiful blue ocean in the background. The unique, steep rock formations along the coastline represent the power of nature and fascinate visitors with a totally different experience from other remote islands. Yonaguni Island is also home to the rare Yonaguni small horses , one of only eight existing horse breeds native to Japan. You can ride them and explore the island and even go for a ride on the sandy beach! Yonaguni Island is accessible by ferry or plane from Ishigaki Island. 

Kerama Islands

This tiny island is one of the Kerama islands, located south of Okinawa Island. The length of the island is only 11 km and around 300 people live there. To explore it, you can just walk around or ride a bicycle if you prefer that. You will be able to see marine turtles in the sea or sunbathe on the beach. The sea surrounding the island is extremely beautiful. It only takes 50 min by ferry to get to the island from the capital of Okinawa, Naha, making it the perfect day trip!

Nagannu is another island belonging to the one of Kerama islands, located just 20 minutes away from Naha by high-speed ferry. This island is uninhabited but there are still some shops and restaurants. Since nobody lives there, its pristine and immaculate beaches and sea are strikingly beautiful. It has also become a famous diving spot. If you like exploring the ocean and want to learn more about the stunning tropical paradise that this island holds, we recommend you try scuba diving.

Whale Watching

From the end of December until early April, you can see humpback whales in Okinawa. One of the most popular places for whale watching is the Kerama Islands. They are made up of 36 beautiful islands, including Zamami and Tokashiki islands. You can book a tour to go to Kerama islands by boat, departing near the airport.

Hateruma Island is the southernmost inhabited island in Japan. About 500 people are living here, and one-third of them are engaged in agriculture or farming. With a total area of 15 km, it boasts beautiful nature and you are sure to have a pleasant stay. Visit Nishihama Beach, where you can see sea turtles swimming in the crystal-clear water, or explore the small island and meet the welcoming local people. For the best stargazing experience, head to Hateruma Observatory Tower for an impressive view of the stars. It will definitely be one of the highlights of your trip to Japan!    

Kume Island is a small remote island, located about 100 km west of the mainland of Okinawa. From the main island, it takes three hours to get there by ferry, and 30 minutes by plane. The volcanic island is officially designated as a Prefectural Natural Park and is visited by a small number of tourists every year. One of the highlights is Hatenohama Beach , a large sandbar located off the coast of Kume Island. It is comprised of three sandbars and is only accessible by boat. The 7 km long white beach offers breathtaking views, especially when the sun sets. Mifuga Rock is another well-known attraction: a giant rock formation with a unique shape. It has a hole in the center of it which makes for a unique yet scenic view of the sea.

Senaga Island is located south of Naha Airport. It is connected to Okinawa island by a bridge and accessible by car, bike, and bus that depart from the airport. Because of its convenient location, many people stop by to enjoy the great views of the sea on their way back home or right after they get to Naha. You can also see big airplanes flying overhead from Naha Airport. Senega Island Umikaji Terrace is a huge shopping complex, opened in 2015, with a number of restaurants, cozy cafes, souvenir shops, and more. Many restaurants serve special Okinawan dishes with locally produced ingredients. It is an ideal resort island for anyone, no matter how old or young.

Kouri Island is a small, peaceful island, located about an hour and a half drive from Naha city, and connected to Yagaji Island by a bridge completed in 2005. The circular island’s main destination is Kouri Beach , a popular swimming destination that can get rather crowded with tourists in the summer season. Visit the Kouri Ocean Tower for some breathtaking panoramic views of the island and the sea at 82 m. There is also a museum that exhibits a large collection of beautiful shells collected from all over the world. The island is also known as a spiritual spot that is supposed to bring luck in love.

The combination of the beautiful scenery, with crystal clear water and white sandy beaches along with a subtropical climate, makes Okinawa a popular destination for everyone. Its unique culture and welcoming atmosphere are other reasons why you should visit this amazing part of Japan. Visit Okinawa in spring or in autumn to avoid the rainy season, hot summers, and the occasional typhoon. About Okinawa

Although each Japanese prefecture is unique in its own way, tropical Okinawa Prefecture (沖縄県, Okinawa-ken ) is by far the most distinct, almost like a different country. And that assessment is true to a certain extent; Okinawa, known then as the Ryukyu Kingdom, was independent from Japan until 1879, and was part of US territory from 1945 to 1972. As a result, the culture, food, and even the language (although many do speak standard Japanese) differ vastly from those of any other region.

On Okinawa Island, places of note are the Chura-umi Aquarium , one of the largest aquariums in the world and home to the whale shark, as well as ancient Ryukyu castle ruins, most notably Shuri-jo . Buy your souvenirs at Kokusai-dori, Okinawa’s main street.

Okinawa can be largely divided up into for regions: the southern region (with Naha City, etc.) the central region, the northern region and the isolated islands. Each of the titles of the items in the list contains the region, so you can refer to these when planning your sightseeing route.

1. Shuri Castle (Southern Region) [Sightseeing]

From the 15th century until the 19th century, Okinawa was an independent kingdom, known as the Ryukyu Kingdom. For around 450 years, the country thrived as a center of overseas trade. In 2000, Shuri Castle was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you are looking to learn about the Rykyu culture and history, this is the place to go.

2. Nakagusuku Castle Ruins (Central Region) [Sightseeing]

The ruins of a castle built in the 14th-15th century in the village of Kitanakagusuku. Located on top of a 160m tall hill, the six walled courtyards of this castle are a sight to see, and will allow you to feel the history and culture of the Ryukyu people. From the top of the ruins, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean. Nakagusuku Castle ruins are also registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

3. Awase & Toya Fishing Ports (Central Region) [Food]

At Awase Fishing Port and Toya Fishing Port, you can enjoy some of the freshest seafood caught in the seas close to Okinawa. Lobster, sea urchin, freshly fried tempura, here you can sample all the delights you would expect of a fishing port. Why not enjoy some fresh seafood with the locals? About 30-40 minutes from the airport.

4. Ishigaki Island (Outer Islands) [Activity]

In Michelin’s “Green Guide Japan,” Ishigaki Island has been awarded to stars, and Kabira Bay in Ishigaki Island has been awarded 3 stars, the top rank. As well as the beautiful clear seas, on the beaches you can see star-shaped sand, known as “hoshizuna.” The beef from Ishigaki Island is also famous.

5. Cape Manza (Northern Region) [Sightseeing]

A spectacular example of Okinawa’s beautiful scenery. The sight of the sea and blue skies from the cape is breathtaking. If it is your first time in Okinawa, this is one place we recommend you visit. If you look carefully into the waters, you can see the beautiful coral reefs. The rock shaped like an elephant’s trunk is also famous.

6. Murasaki Mura (Central Region) [Activity]

An entertainment park where you can experience 101 different types of Okinawan culture. From Karate to Okinawan cooking, to Ryukyu glass making, and traditional Okinawan dyeing, there is something for everyone. You can also enjoy traditional Okinawan cuisine at the restaurant in the facility, Janatei, while watching traditional cultural arts.

7. Ufuya (Northern Region) [Food]

A 100-year old traditional home that has been converted into a restaurant. It’s Okinawan dishes and soba made using Agu pork are incredibly popular. Beside restaurant is a natural stone park which is great to take a leisurely walk through after lunch.

8. Kokusai Dori Yatai-mura (Southern Region) [Food]

Opened on Kokusai Dori in June 2015. There are 20 stalls at which you can enjoy a variety of local and original dishes made with Okinawan ingredients. The nearby Rito Marushe sells souvenirs mainly from the isolated islands of Okinawa, and also has a coffee shop. At the stage, you can enjoy various performances such as shimauta, or traditional Okinawan songs and eisa dances.

9. Tsuboya Yachimun Street (Southern Region) [Shopping, Activity]

Yachimun is the word for Okinawa pottery. Tsuboya Yachimun Street has a long history spanning over 300 years, and here you can find many famous pottery workshops. We recommend taking part in a yachimun pottery class, searching for some original souvenirs for your friends back at home and enjoying a cup of coffee in a yachimun cup while you are here!

10. Ryukyu Glass Craft (Southern Region) [Activity]

Ryukyu glass is one of Okinawa’s most well known traditional crafts. Originally made from glass bottles disposed of by the US military after the war, but now it is made with a high level of skill in a variety of beautiful colors and designs, making it a popular souvenir.

11. Kouri & Sesoko Islands (Northern Region) [Activity]

Kouri island is a remote island in the northern part of the Okinawa mainland that you can access by car along the Kour island Ohashi bridge. It has one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Okinawa. Sesoko island is beach resort  in the north of the Okinawa mainland that you can access by car.

12. Miyako Island (Outer Islands) [Activity]

A beautiful island with emerald blue seas and white sands. Many divers both from Japan and overseas visit the island every year, drawn by the clear blue seas and beautiful coral. Why not pay a visit to the island to see some of the unique Miyako Island culture? It’s about 45 minutes from the mainland by aeroplane.

13. Kamimura Shuzo (Central Region) [Activity]

Kamimura Shuzo is an old distillery established in 1882, located in the center of the mainland. Tours of the distillery are available not only during the day, but at night as well. You can make a souvenir awamori bottle which can be stored in the cellars beneath the distillery for 5 to 10 years. You can also hold awamori parties here!

14. Makishi Public Market (Southern Region) [Shopping]

A public market known as the “Kitchen of Okinawa.” Visited by the Okinawan locals for their shopping, it is a great place to catch a glimpse of the everyday life of the Okinawan people. It is also very enjoyable talking to the friendly merchants. There are many restaurants offering dishes made with local ingredients at the market, and you’re able to find all the local ingredients here.

15. The Ruins of Katsuren Castle (Central Region) [Sightseeing]

The ruins of Katsuren Castle are Okinawa’s oldest ruins and are registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is said that the castle was originally constructed in the 12th century. If you climb the small hill on which the castle ruins stand, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the sea. It is one of Okinawa’s most famous tourist spots.

16. Yachimun Kissa Shisa-en (Northern Region) [Food]

A cafe in the mountains in northern Okinawa. A number of shisa sit on the red tiled roof of this nostalgic old folk house. Enjoying a glass of freshly squeezed acerola or citrus depressa juice and some traditional Okinawan snacks such as hirayachi while listening to the chirping of the birds is exquisite. A calming, relaxing cafe.

17. Shikinaen (Southern Region) [Sightseeing]

One of Okinawa’s many UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the Ryukyu Kingdom period, it was used as a second residence by the royal family to rest or entertain guests from China. Walking through the Ryukyu style palace and gardens and the pond shaped like the Chinese character meaning heart  or spirit (“心”), you can get a real taste of Ryukyu culture and history.

18. Kajinhou (Northern Region) [Food]

An old folk house that has been refurbished into a cafe. Located on top of a hill in the northern Okinawa, Kajinhou’s hand-made pizzas and fresh acerola, mango and guava juices are incredibly popular. From the outside of the cafe, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the sea.

19. Mihama American Village (Central Region) [Shopping]

About 40m from Naha Airport by car. A large shopping center with the atmosphere of the American west coast. It also has a cinema and bowling alleys. A number of American restaurant chains, such as Tony Roma’s and Red Lobster, have set up branches here so you can enjoy some authentic American culture while you’re in Okinawa.

Planning on visiting Okinawa? When people visit Japan for the first time, they tend to first visit Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka. However, once you have visited these cities, where to go next depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. If warm weather, beautiful beaches, and a nice slow-paced time, then Okinawa should be on top of your list. Here, you can enjoy all of these things while still being able to feel the Japanese culture.

Okinawa is the southmost prefecture of Japan and it officially consists of 160 islands (47 of which are inhabited). Many people have the impression that Okinawa is only about nice beaches and warm weather, which is a shame because this prefecture has so much to offer, beginning with its unique culture.

In this article, I would like to share with you our countdown list of the 15 best places to visit in Okinawa. In this list, I will introduce to you not only popular spots but also some lesser-known (but equally interesting) spots that you should definitely consider when you come to visit Okinawa. I hope this article becomes a good reference for those planning on spending time in these southern islands of Japan.

15. Ryukyu Mura

We start our list of where to go in Okinawa with an educational place that people of all ages can enjoy. Ryukyu Mura (琉球村) , which translates to “Ryukyu village”, is a theme park where you can learn about Okinawa’s history, culture, and tradition.

The houses in the theme park are mostly 100-year-old traditional Okinawa-style houses, and here, you can experience firsthand what it is like to live in a traditional Okinawa way.

There are many workshops as well as dance demonstrations for you to enjoy.

14. Kohama Island

This island doesn’t have a major attraction, so to say, but it is visited by people who just want to escape from everyday stress. Just get there, rent a motor scooter, and explore the beautiful sites and the delicious food that this small island has to offer.

The castle is said to have been burnt down in the early 1600s and is a type of castle ruin that you won’t see in other parts of Japan.

The typical Okinawa-style house consists of a reddish-tiled roof with Shisa (シーサー) statues on top and Ishigaki walls (stone walls) surrounding the house. These stone walls are actually not made with rocks, but by stacking up pieces of coral. Add to this the white sandy paths and the hibiscus trees, and you will have an authentic Okinawa neighborhood scenery.

11. Sefa-Utaki

If you like the Japanese concept of “Power spot”(パワースポット), then this next place is for you. Sefa-Utaki (斎場御嶽) is said to be the most spiritually charged place in all of Okinawa. This place is part of the various spots that form the world heritage known as “Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu”.

This place is said to be created by the deity that created the Ryukyu kingdom. The triangular space you see in the image above is especially sacred, which is why it’s called a Power spot. Definitely, a spot to go in Okinawa that can’t be ignored.

10. Miyako Island

Miyako Island is connected to three other smaller islands by long bridges. You can rent a car and drive from Miyako island to the other islands. The view of the ocean while driving across these bridges is something you just need to experience by yourself.

9. Okinawa World

The main attraction of this theme park is the 5km long, underground limestone cave that is said to have taken over 300,000 years in creating. 890m of the cave is open to the public, so you can see something you won’t be able to see elsewhere in Okinawa.

The houses used in this theme park are also old traditional Okinawa-style houses and there are workshops and events where anyone can participate.

8. Ishigaki Island

Another of the very popular remote islands in Okinawa is Ishigaki Island or Ishigakijima (石垣島) . From transparent ocean with white sandy beaches and mangrove jungles to indigenous culture and regional food, Ishigaki Island has no shortage of things to do and places to visit.

This is one of the most popular options for people who want to avoid the crowded Okinawa main island. You can actually fly to Ishigaki island directly from Tokyo. Also, there is a large ferry port that allows you to take a side trip to other remote islands such as Iriomote island, Taketomi island, and Kohama island.

7. Okinawa Peace Memorial Park

The park is a spacious 40ha and is located near the beach where it is popular for people to have picnics.

6. Kouri Island or Kourijima

On the north shore of the island, there is a popular scenic spot where you will find “the Heart Rocks” which are naturally formed heart-shaped rocks. These rocks became famous after they appeared in a TV commercial featuring the Japanese boy group Arashi. Nowadays, it has become a popular place to visit, especially for couples. So, if you’re planning on visiting Okinawa with your special someone, this may by one of the spots to go.

5. Cape Manza

The impressive 20m tall cliff has an elephant shape when seen from the side. This, along with the clear ocean water provide an impressive scenery that you need to see for yourself. If you like these kinds of scenic views, then this place should be part of your list of “spots to go in Okinawa”.

4. Mihama American Village

Another attractive point about Mihama American Village is that is located right next to the beach, so if you suddenly feel like bathing, you will have the beach right there.

3. Kokusai Dori Street

This street is also known as Kiseki no 1 mairu which means “the miraculous 1 mile”. This is because this street was able to revitalize and develop into what it is now right after WWII (and it also happens to be about 1 mile long).

Nearby this street is also Tsuboya Yachimundori (壺屋やちむん通り) which is a 400 m-long street full of shops where you can make your own pottery.

2. Shuri Castle

However, the main structure of the castle burnt down again in 2019, so currently, the actual castle is not there. The castle is going to be restored once more and is planned to be completed by 2026.

You can still go visit and see the remaining parts of the castle that weren’t affected by the fire. There’s also a room where you can see the plans regarding the restoration.

1. Churaumi Aquarium

And lastly, on our list of where to go in Okinawa, we have Churaumi Aquarium (美ら海水族館) . Located about 2 hours to the north by car from Naha Airport, this is the most visited aquarium in all of Japan (approximately 3 million people visit the aquarium yearly).

The aquarium has 77 fish tanks and its main attraction is the majestic whale shark you can see in the image above.

Also, within walking distance from the aquarium, there is Emerald beach (エメラルドビーチ) which, as you may guess, has cristal clear water that seems emerald colored when seen from a distance.

Okinawa Starts Here

Unsurprisingly, many of the things to do in Okinawa center around the water, whether you’re swimming where it meets the islands’ sugary shores, or scuba diving under it. However, there’s plenty to enjoy in Okinawa that has nothing to do with the beach, or even the outdoors.

Trust me—I know. My first trip to Okinawa took place in the winter, and in spite of what well-meaning friends had told me, saw the archipelago plunged into conditions that were absolutely frigid, with only about three hours of sunshine over the course a 72-hour trip. As a result, I had little choice but to seek out Okinawa attractions that were weather independent.

On the other hand, this Okinawa travel guide won’t simply name places to visit if you happen to come when it’s pouring rain and barely above freezing. I’ll also discuss activities that you can enjoy on the hottest and sunniest of summer days, so don’t you worry!

The Best Time to Visit Okinawa

When is the best time to travel to Okinawa? Officially, Okinawa is a 365-day per year destination, but my personal experience contradicts this . While my initial research suggested that early February was near the top of the list of when to visit Okinawa, the conditions I encountered were appalling—I’m talking thick clouds, heavy rain, howling wind and temperatures between 3º-5ºC. I can’t in good conscience recommend that anyone visit Okinawa between about November and March as a result, in spite of the fact that things to do in Okinawa in March are theoretically similar to what you could do in May or September.

On the other hand, since so much of what to do in Okinawa is outdoor, and the archipelago also experiences a long monsoon and typhoon season between about June and October, this is also not an ideal time to visit Okinawa, at least not on paper. In practice, I’ve found that rain comes and goes quickly in Okinawa during the Japanese summer ; apart from this, April and May are generally OK months to visit Okinawa. My latest visit to Okinawa took place in September and apart from some haze on Tokashiki island , the weather was perfect.

My Favorite Things to Do in Okinawa

Hit the beach (or at least look at it).

The bad news? Coming up with even a short list of the best beaches in Okinawa can be difficult, especially if you have the time and inclination to go island-hopping. The good news? If you’re planning a shorter trip in Okinawa, add Ishigaki ‘s Kabira Bay and Aharen Beach on Tokashiki island (which sits just to the north of the main island) to your list. Note that in the case of Kabira Bay, which is protected, you won’t be able to get in the water (but you can still get some awesome pictures!).

Go Under the Sea (or Boat on Top of It)

Okinawa diving is some of the best in Asia (and almost by default, the best in Japan), though this can be a more expensive activity than you’ve found it to be elsewhere. Top diving spots in Okinawa include the Kerama Islands , which sit just off Okinawa main island, as well as the Yaeyama region, which includes Ishigaki. Note that Japan is very strict about diving licenses; if you don’t have yours when you arrive to Okinawa, your only option will be to snorkel. Another way to enjoy Okinawa’s beautiful water is to rent a canoe or kayak.

Take a Hike

Although it’s home to the best beaches in Japan, many things to do in Okinawa have nothing to do with water. In particular, Okinawa is a hiking paradise. Sticking close to the main island, some of my favorite hikes include the relatively short one up to the ruins of Nakijin Castle , or up to the keep of Shuri Castle in Naha city (which, due to a 2019 fire, is still mostly destroyed, I warn you). Outside the main island, Mount Gusuku on Ie  offers stunning views, while Mt. Omoto on Ishigaki couples amazing panoramas with crystalline waterfalls.

Eat Your Way Through Okinawa

Although neither as ubiquitous as sushi nor as trendy as ramen , the best Okinawa food will nonetheless have your mouth watering. Try Okinawa Soba , which sees classic soba noodle soup paired with tender pork belly with just the right amount of fat. Or head down to the Kokusai-dori international street in Naha city, and sample Taco Rice, a quirky dish that’s said to be the brain child of the American troops controversially stationed in the archipelago.

Stick to the City

None of which is to say you have to strap on hiking boots or don a swimsuit to enjoy Okinawa sightseeing. In fact, there’s plenty to enjoy in Naha itself, from the aforementioned Shuri Castle, to peaceful Shikina-en park, to the mysterious Naminoue Shrine , which rises above the city. Naha city is also home to Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum , where you can learn the story of the once-sovereign Kingdom of Ryukyu, which ruled over Okinawa before it was absorbed into the Japanese Empire.

Where to Stay in Okinawa

Okinawa is primarily a leisure destination for Japanese travelers, which leads some to believe that all the best Okinawa hotels are fancy beach resorts (if not ones stuck totally in the 80s, as is often the M.O. for hotels in Japan). Not so, at least not completely. While travelers seeking such properties can choose an accommodation like Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island , Okinawa is home to plenty of smart and even boutique-style city hotels, from West Inn in Naha to Ishigaki’s Hotel WBF Porto .

On the other hand, I wouldn’t worry yourself too much over where you stay in Okinawa. Notwithstanding the fact that so many of the things to do in Okinawa will keep you far outside your hotel room, even the location is somewhat superfluous, since you are likely to rent a car when you travel to Okinawa. To echo a sentiment I’ve brought up throughout this article, I believe your primary concern when visiting Okinawa should be the weather.

Is Okinawa Overrated?

Is Okinawa worth visiting? After my disastrous winter trip to the former Ryukyu Kingdom, I certainly didn’t think so. I was angry and I felt cursed, especially since so much of the rest of my 2018 Asia travel saw unseasonably wet and cold conditions. Thanks climate change! Further travel to Okinawa (it looks so beautiful under sunny skies—almost like Hawaii, which is ironic since so many Japanese shirk these islands in their own backyard for it) has proven me wrong, somewhat.

Which is to say that I wouldn’t recommend cutting short a trip in the rest of Japan—what to see in Okinawa, apart from the beaches, doesn’t compare to even the smallest city on Honshu, Shikoku , Kyushu or Hokkaido—or going out of your way at all, really, to visit Okinawa. The islands are honestly best visited on a weekend trip if you’re staying in Japan (or a nearby Asian country, like Taiwan ) for a while.

Other FAQ About Things to Do in Okinawa

Does okinawa get cold.

I know from personal experience that Okinawa gets cold! When I took my first trip to the archipelago, in January 2018, it was absolutely frigid, to say nothing of how rainy and windy it was, with almost constant cloud-cover. When is the best time to visit Okinawa? In my opinion, it’s not between December and March.

Do you tip in Okinawa?

As is the case throughout Japan, tipping is not customary in Okinawa. If you do try to tip, Okinawan people will assume you accidentally left the money behind, and chase after you with it. Save yourself the awkward exchange and don’t bother trying to tip in the first place!

What is the best area to stay in Okinawa?

The most convenient place to stay in Okinawa is in Naha city, preferably near the Yui monorail. Likewise, in Ishigaki, staying near Ishigaki Port allows you to easily access boats to outlying islands in the Yaeyama Archipelago.

The Bottom Line

The good news? Many experiences in my Okinawa travel guide have nothing to do with the beach, especially in Naha, the capital of the prefecture and largest city on its largest island. The bad news, conversely, is that needing to stay indoors is relatively likely in Okinawa, whether you make the mistake of visiting in winter like I did, or are unlucky enough to have a summer trip to the archipelago coincide with a typhoon making landfall. How To Stay Connected in Japan

Japan is super stingy when it comes to their wifi and sharing internet. They’ve gotten a little bit better since I’ve lived there, but not much. I recommend  you book an e-sim card and download it directly to your phone. If you don’t have that capability, you can order a 4G wifi box ahead of time and pick it up at any airport you designate in Japan.

Most tourists land at Narita or Haneda Airport when they arrive in Japan. So you may be wondering how to go to Okinawa from Tokyo or how to go to Okinawa?

How To Get To Okinawa From Tokyo

Japan’s Okinawa island is just a two and half hour plane ride from Tokyo. By plane is the best way to travel to Okinawa. It’s actually closer to Taiwan than it is to mainland Japan.

How To Get Around Okinawa

Most flights go directly into Naha which is the international airport. Okinawa is not public transportation friendly. You will need to rent a car for your Okinawa travel. If you’re only planning on staying in Naha as an Okinawa tourist, then disregard this. Naha has a monorail that will take you as far as Urasoe. If you want to go to other stunning beach locations around the island, then I highly suggest you make renting a car a priority. You will need a valid driver’s license and an IDP in order to rent a car in Okinawa . Alternatively, if you’re a YOLO kind of person or you forgot to get your IDP, you can get the Okinawa Bus Pass to cart you around wherever you need to go.

The best months to visit Okinawa is August through October. This is so you can avoid the intense summer heat. However, September is peak typhoon season.

2. Is Okinawa humid?

Okinawa has a subtropical climate, so yes it is very humid. Sometimes the humidity is so strong, it will feel like you’re swimming through the air and all you want to do is hide in the actual AC unit or go to the beach and dunk yourself profusely. And I’m talking the most unattractive swass during Okinawa in summer.

3. Is Okinawa worth visiting?

The simple answer is… Yes, you ding dong. Visit Okinawa! This beautiful island in the middle of the sea is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever lived in my life. Okinawa is so worth the damn visit and if you don’t go, I hope you suffer from FOMO for the rest of your life.

If the Karate Kid starring Ralph Macchio and Noriyuki “Pat” Morita, then good job, you get a gold star. While the character of Mr. Miyagi does come from Okinawa, the majority of the film was made in Hawaii. Whomp. Whomp.

In my honest opinion, Okinawa is best known for two things — Okinawa time and the Okinawa diet. The traditional diet there is so high in yummy vitamins and nutrients, the people in Okinawa are known to have the longest life spans in the world.

5. What is Okinawa time?

Now when I talk about Okinawa time… I mean everything is done slowly and whenever people feel like it. In other words, this shit can drive you crazy. If I were you, I’d avoid public transport at all costs and just rent a car while you’re there.

6. Is Okinawa different from the rest of Japan?

Okinawa is also known for other things such as their stunning beaches, mix of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean culture, as well as their own unique culture. Before it became part of Japan, Okinawa was known as the Ryukyu Kingdom and had its own culture, language and traditions.

Would you believe me if I told you Okinawa is closer to Taiwan that it is to mainland Japan? A flight from Tokyo to Okinawa will be hour 3.5 hours.

Whatchu talking about days, fool? Nah, you need at least two to three weeks to really uncover the stunning beauty and nature Okinawa has to offer to the world.

9. Does it get cold in Okinawa, Japan?

You may think being closer to the equator guarantees warmer weather, but my friend, that is sooooo not the case. In the winter months, it can drop down to 50 Fahrenheit or 15 Celsius. Winter in Okinawa starts in November and ends around the end of February when the temperatures start increasing to 70 Fahrenheit or 21 Celsius in March.

And yes, many were the days I froze my butt off because the humidity makes everything so much colder.

Okinawa is located in the Pacific Ocean. It’s located about 300 miles off the coast of mainland Japan.

The best thing to do in Okinawa is go to the beaches. The subtropical weather is perfect for enjoying them. I also recommend going snorkeling and participating in the local culture by painting a shisa or coral dyeing .

The best season to travel Okinawa is autumn, winter, or spring. Summer in Okinawa is very hot and humid. Unless you’re used to that kind of weather I don’t recommend going.

What To Pack For Okinawa

Travel essentials for what to pack to Okinawa:

• Unlocked phone  –  You can book a sim card here.  Alternatively, if you don’t have an unlocked phone,  you can also use this portable wifi router .
• Toothpaste  – Japanese toothpaste sucks PERIODT. Bring your own from home.
• Important documents  – Bring any important medical documents in case something happens. 
• Passport  – This should be a given, but please don’t forget it. Make a copy of your passport and hide it in your suitcase and leave one on your fridge at home.
• Credit/Debit Cards  – Big shopping malls and most restaurants take credit cards now.
• Cash – Japan is still primarily a cash is king society.
• Medication  – Don’t forget your important medicine because I guarantee it will be a nightmare for you to navigate the hospital and then go to a pharmacy to try and get it.

How much money do I need to travel in Okinawa? This is a simple Okinawa travel expenses break down. It honestly depends on you, what you like, and what you’re into. In this Okinawa tourist guide, I will be covering the basics like car rental, accommodation, food and tourist activities.

As one of the poorest prefectures in Okinawa, it is considerably cheaper than mainland Japan. But remember, Okinawa is still Japan and it can get quite pricey. One week expenses in Okinawa will go as follows:

• Car Rental – $250
• Accommodation – $320 – $630
• Food – $182
• Special activities – $300

Where To Stay in Okinawa

Most people who visit Okinawa tend to stay in the Naha area. While staying in Naha is great because you can easily get to the outer islands, there are so many other great places to be.

• Aqua Citta (Naha) – This upscale hotel offers pristine views of the city from its rooftop pool and Tomari Port. Aqua Citta is 15 minutes away from Naha Airport.
• Hotel Nikko Alivila (Yomitan) – With its enormous pool, beautiful private beach, stunning views and exceptional service, this is a place I highly recommend. While I lived in Okinawa, many year end parties were hosted here and I had incredible experiences every time.
• ANA Intercontinental Manza Beach (Onna Village) – This place is literally like it’s own little city and is so convenient, you don’t even have to leave the property. Guests can utilize a mini-golf course, shops, rental bicycles, canoes, and jet skis. There’s even on-site gym, hot tub, and sauna.
• Mr. Kinjo (Naha) – Conveninetly located outside Asahibashi Station, the location is great and breakfast is included in your stay.
• Ocean View Araha (Chatan) – Set in Chatan, 2.5 km from Sunset Beach and 2.8 km from Mihama American Village, Ocean View Araha offers garden views and free WiFi.
• Hotel Sunset Zanpa (Yomitan) – Set in Yomitan, Hotel Sunset ZANPA provides accommodation with private balconies. The property is situated 5 km from Zakimi Gusuku Castle, 2.5 km from Murasakimura and 2.1 km from Cape Zanpa. The property is non-smoking and is located 1.6 km from Zanpa Beach.
• Guest House Umikaji (Naha) – This two star guest house is attractively located in the Naha City Centre district of Naha, and set 2 km from Yachimun Street.

What To Eat in Okinawa

One of the reasons Okinawans live so long is because of their diet. It’s rich in fish, rice and veggies (especially goya). In my opinion, the Okinawa diet is one of the most healthy in the world.

If you’re looking for something that is off the beaten path and a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the unique cuisine of Okinawa, then I highly suggest taking a traditional cooking class . With this class, you will get a choice of making goya chanpuru or Okinawa soba (two very staple dishes). Before you cook, you’ll also get a tour of the Naha Food Market and see what’s really up.

P.S. Slowly but surely there is also a vegan and vegetarian scene that has been popping up!

• Okinawa Soba – This dish is buckwheat noodles with pork belly, scallion, fish cake, and boneless pork ribs.
• Beni Imo Taruto – Purple potato tart is one of my all time favorite sweets in Okinawa. They originated in Yomitan.
• Goya Champuru – This dish is made with goya (bitter melon), tofu, egg, and pork belly. It’s a popular dish and a classic one you need to try.
• Okinawan Sea Grapes – My first thought was.. Ew gross, but they’re actually quite nice. The taste is slightly salty with an ocean freshness to it and it is especially nice on a hot day.
• Yaki Niku – This is Japanese style barbecue and something that should definitely be on your must eat list. You get raw cuts of different meats and cook it yourself on the table. I took all my siblings to Japanese barbecue and its something we still enjoy doing together.

Southern Okinawa

While visiting Okinawa, you’ll definitely be starting in Naha. There’s tons of Okinawa tourist attractions (despite what most ill researched and cranky travelers might have said). Everything I recommend are things I personally have done and loved. The ocean in Okinawa is probably the most beautiful ocean you’ll ever see in your life. I recommend going on a Okinawa Glass Bottom Boat Tour from Tomari Port.

Shuri Castle

The Shuri Castle was once known as the Rykyu Kingdom and home to the royalty. Sadly, in 2019 a devastating fire burned down Shuri Castle . To my knowledge, the castle is still be reconstructed. The grounds are just as beautiful though and I still recommend going. You can even rent a kimono or yukata to make the experience 10x better and the photos even more awesome.

Kokusai Dori

Kokusai Dori is the main touristy strip in Naha. This is where you start your vacation in Okinawa Japan. Here you’ll find hundreds of trinkets and baubles from stores selling Okinawa themed merchandise. Anything and everything Okinawa culture related is on this street. For cool things to do in Okinawa, I suggest you go karting like Super Mario on the main strip.

Okinawa Whale Watching

If you want to watch the humpback whales, the best time of year in Okinawa is from December through April. While whale watching in Okinawa, you can watch them teach their young how to survive in the open waters. It is a majestic experience. You can book your whale watching tour here .

Shuri Ryusen Coral Dyeing

Shuri Ryusen Coral Dyeing has undoubtedly been one of my favorite experiences ever in Okinawa. Instead of throwing away dead coral, Okinawans found a way to repurpose it and make art out of tragedy. Here you take special dyes in a pouch and press it over coral to make imprints. I think this is a great souvenir for your vacation in Okinawa.

Paint Your Own Shisa

One of the best things to do in Okinawa, Japan is to partake in the local culture. Did you know the shisa dog was given to the Ryukyu King to protect him during hard times? Shisa come in male and female pairs. They are used to keep good vibes in your home and keep out all negative vibes. You’ll find them all over Okinawa island and you can paint your own shisa as a great momento .

Shikinaen Garden

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Shikinaen Garden is one of the most stunning gardens in Okinawa. With Chinese and unique Ryukyuan influences, I highly recommend this garden. Shikinaen was once a residence and private escape of the royalty where they went to relax and unwind. It’s one of the best things to see in Okinawa if you love nature and gardens.

This is a memorial dedicated to the people who died in the Battle of Okinawa during World War II. Our history books tell us one third of Okinawa’s population was lost during this bitter and gruesome battle. If you’re sightseeing Okinawa, this is a must visit activity. Here you’ll learn about the history and sign a petition to end all wars. P.S. Bring some tissues because you’ll see some seriously sad sights in Okinawa.

Ryukyu Glass Making

Many people don’t know a very unique style of Ryukyu glass making was born in Okinawa. The glass has many bubbles because it is said to emulate the beautiful ocean. I myself have done this experience and made jewelry. To be honest, it is one of my most cherished possessions. Ryukyu glass making is one of the most unique things to do at Okinawa.

Try an ATV Experience

Do you have a need for adventure? Yeah me too. I like going really fast on scooters, ATVs, and golf carts. With this ATV experience in Itoman, you’ll feel like the bad ass you really are. They have a marked trail and its even safe enough to bring kids if you have them.

Central Okinawa

The midlands are my favorite place to play in Okinawa. I lived there and I still know it like the back of my hand today. I honestly think it’s one of the best parts of the island to be on because you have access to the north and south.

American Village is my old stomping grounds and one of my favorite places to visit in Okinawa. Since it is located across the street from the Kadena Air Base, you’ll find many delicious restaurants to choose from. It’s a popular tourist spot in Okinawa Japan. There’s also a huge SEGA arcade to keep you entertained, close proximity to the Aeon Department store, Sunset Beach, and Araha Beach.

As you know, Okinawa is famous for beni imo which is purple potato. Make sure you stop at the Blue Seal flagship store so you can get the ice cream which is to DIE FOR. You can also get your troll on at the Blue Seal ice cream balcony while you overlook the Ferris Wheel. Urban legend in the area has it that if you ride it with someone you’re dating you’ll break up… And to be honest, it happened to me with a guy I was dating, so I’m inclined to believe it.

This is one of my absolute favorite shopping destinations in Asia. Why? Since the American military bases are all in close proximity to this mall there are many foreign shops I enjoy like Forever 21, H&M, and American Eagle. The Rycom Mall is one of the best Okinawa Japan attractions because there’s so many shopping choices. I you’re a bigger gal or compadre, I recommend hanging out at the Rycom Mall .

If you truly want to experience Okinawa like a local then you have to visit Yomitan Village. It gets overlooked, but its home to a UNESCO World Heritage site, gorgeous beaches, and home of the purple potato tart. For me, my old village is the creme de la creme of Okinawa sightseeing.

Eat at Ocean’s Pizza

This is one of the better places on the island to eat pizza. The quality is amazing (because Japan) and their lunch buffet is to die for. You can order the lunch special pizza buffet with an amazing view. Now that’s what I call eating an Italian pie in style.

Eat at Dechibica

This is one of the most famous vegan eats on the island. The owners Kiwa and Taku San are seriously wonderfully people. I shamelessly ate at this restaurant once or twice a week and they are truly food artists. They grow their own ingredients or they are sourced locally for optimal freshness.

Go To Zakimi Castle

UNESCO designates World Heritage Sites for a reason. It’s because they’re fucking cool. Zakimi Castle was built in the 1400s by the Chuzan Kingdom which ruled over central Okinawa Honto. The castle served as a safeguard against rebels in the north, after the Chuzan Kingdom defeated the Hokuzan Kingdom in the north and eventually united the island into the Ryukyu Kingdom.

Yomitan Pottery Village

Designated as a national treasure of Japan, the Yomitan Pottery Village showcases the unique artistry of Okinawa. There are over 45 practicing artists, some of which are national treasures themselves. Prices of the pottery start at $10 and up. The Yomitan Pottery village was one of the most interesting things to see in Okinawa Japan because of all the culture and art.

Zanpa Beach

This beach is especially stunning when the sun shines. It is free to all residents and tourists who want to enjoy a clean and well-maintained beach in Yomitan. I frequented this beach after work and let me tell you, it’s not crowded at all. Every trip to Okinawa needs to include a beautiful beach or five.

Swim With Whale Sharks

I totally wish I would have known about swimming with whale sharks before I left Yomitan. If you’re a licensed diver, you can swim with these gentle and beautiful giants in the open ocean. What kind of Okinawa guide would this be if there wasn’t a little adventure?

Stay At Hotel Nikko Alivila

Hotel Nikko Alivila is one of the most stunning hotels on the island and while I was working as a high school teacher in Okinawa, there were many a school end of the year parties hosted there. If you’re looking to splurge it’s got luxury, spacious guest rooms and beautiful views of Nirai Beach.

You can get lovely massages and walk around European inspired gardens.

Onna Village

Did you know Onna means woman in Japanese? Situated right above Yomitan, this is more of a resort village. There’s tons of beaches and incredible places to stay to really enjoy your time in Okinawa.

Ryukyu Mura

The Ryukyu Mura is an Okinawa must visit. This is a theme park with a recreated traditional Okinawan village. A wide range of traditional dances and cultural experiences are held inside Ryukyu Mura . You can eat popular Okinawan dishes and purchase a wide range of souvenirs.

Onna Village Blue Cave

How much of a risk taker are you? I used to be terrified of swimming in the open ocean because I didn’t know what crazy critters lived there. The Blue Cave at Maeda Point was once a hidden gem when I lived there, but now it’s more accessible to the public. Snorkeling (or scuba diving) at the Onna Village Blue Cave is seriously one of the most spectacular things I’ve ever done in my life.

The way it glows and shines like a precious gem is incredible. You’ll be able to see all the stunning coral and exotic fish swimming as well.

Ikei Island

There are many gorgeous islands in Okinawa. Ikei is one of my favorite and has an incredible beach. You have to pay 700 yen to enter but it is so worth it. They have showers, pristine waters, and floats you can hang out on. It’s one of the best places to visit in Okinawa for exclusive beaches.

Northern Okinawa

Northern Okinawa is much more rural so if you’re really into nature, then the north is definitely a place you want to hang out.

Visit Okinawa World

If you’re looking for a way to really immerse yourself in Okinawa’s unique culture, then you should visit Okinawa World . This interactive museum gives you access to the Nanto Brewery, a culture museum, and cave. It’s definitely worth a visit!

Visit Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

The famous Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is one of the top attractions in Okinawa Japan. I can guarantee you’ve seen it on social media before and have been amazed. They save the best for last and the whale shark exhibit is awe inspiring. It’s also the first aquarium to successfully breed a baby whale shark in captivity.

Nago Pineapple Park

At Nago Pineapple Park you’ll have enough fun for the entire family. This is am amusement park that showcases everything pineapple. At the park, you’ll also be able to drink special alcoholic wine made solely from pineapple.

Pizza in the Sky

When I tell you this pizza joint is famous, I mean it. Because of the high quality ingredients used and their brick oven way of cooking, expect to wait over an hour to be seated on the weekends. Also, if you couldn’t tell from the name, the restaurant is on top of a mountain making the views and pizza totally worth it.

Captain Kangaroo

This is another famous burger place on the island. In fact, it is so well-known that it’s sold out before 1pm. Their burgers are huge and it’s insanely popular with foreigners and Japanese alike.

Tanagagumui (Aha) Falls

If the name doesn’t sound Japanese, it’s because it’s not. As one of Okinawa’s hidden treasures (buried way the hell up north), you would be missing out by not jumping off the waterfall, swinging off the rope swing, or hiking nearby. It’s still one of the best kept secrets and a lot of people don’t know it exists.

Also, there are no lifeguards or any rescue personell there. If you go cliff jumping or swimming, then you do so at your own risk. That being said, there is a rope swing and it’s incredibly refreshing to jump in after the hike up there.

Kouri Island

Kouri Island is so small you can probably drive around the entire thing in thirty minutes. It’s got great scenery and beautiful beaches. In addition, it also also famous for the heart rocks. Many couples go to take photos there. The stars are especially stunning at night. Kouri Island is near Nago. You can also book a cruising tour of Haneji Island which also has amazing snorkeling.

Okinawa Outer Islands

Do you enjoy beach bum life? Are you into Storybook blue oceans, sparkling fish, and a sun tan? Okinawa has loads of outer islands like Tokashiki, Zamami, Ishigaki, Miyako, Aka and Geruma. Only an hour away by ferry from Tomari Pot in Naha, you can visit your tropical paradise any time.

Tokashiki is and forever will be my most favorite outer island on Okinawa. I have so many good memories on this island that have added to the experience. Not only is it beautiful, but you can also see sea turtles too. Kerama Islands

The Kerama Islands are a great day trip and are located 40km from Naha. They are well-known for their pristine white sand beaches, wonderful snorkeling and diving, as well as crystal blue waters ideal for swimming. Going to these amazing islands is such a treat and I recommend a full day island snorkeling at the Kerama islands .

Or if you’re a licensed diver, I heard the Keramas is one of the best diving spots on Okinawa. You can get a diving tour of the Keramas at a discount here .

Zamami is one of the bigger islands of the Keramas and off the coast of Naha. Tokashiki is its neighbor. You can rent a scooter and easily get around on the island. This island is more hilly so I really don’t recommend renting a bike. Bring your snorkel gear because there are so many beaches with no people and lots of curious sea creatures. Zamami is a great day trip but if you want to spend a longer time exploring you can book a stay at Oceana Portvillage or at Zamamia Guest House .

Aka and Geruma

Aka and Geruma are islands attached to Zamami via bridges. They have cute island folklore about two dog lovers. One of the dogs used to swim back and forth from the islands each day to be with his mate. I also love these islands because they are so untouched by tourism. You can easily rent a bike and have these islands all to yourself.

Ishigaki is the second largest island in the chain of islands that comprises of Okinawa. You actually need to take a flight down to Ishigaki and cannot travel there by ferry. Luckily, it’s only an hour by plane to get there. As the second biggest island, there is a lot to do there like explore the smaller islands and immerse yourself in the traditional Ryukyuan Island culture. Since this is the next biggest island, you must rent a car to get around Ishigaki . Here are some of my recommended activities:

Taketomi Island

The first time I went to Taketomi Island, I got as sick as a dog with a high fever and then a typhoon rolled in ruining the trip. The second time I went… It was a magical and fantastic trip. I can’t recommend going here enough. Taketomi island is what inspired one of the most famous Okinawan songs you’ll hear time and time again. I really recommend taking this eco-friendly Taketomi and Phantom Island tour here .

Buy Black Pearls at Kabira Bay

Did you know Ishigaki Island is one of the biggest producers of black pearls in the world? They were thought of as so rare and beautiful the Ryukyu Royalty wore them in their crowns and jewelry. Black pearls are expensive, but they are a wonderful Okinawa souvenir. I own a black pearl necklace and it is one of my most cherished possessions. It has sentimental value since I lived in Okinawa and I always said I left part of my heart in the ocean… So I took a part of the ocean with me. I bought my Okinawan black pearl at Ryukyu Pearl and I highly recommend them .

These black pearl farms are located at Kabira Bay so you can see the pearl farmers at work. It’s also a great place to go for an ocean tour. There’s a really cool Kabira Bay and Phantom Island Tour you can take and then come back and go shopping after.

Miyako is much more rural compared to Ishigaki. It has many amazing beaches, but there’s not much to sightsee for on the island. If you just wanna laze around and go to the beach, then Miyako is definitely more your vibe.

The best Okinawa islands you should visit

The most beautiful places to go for an island getaway in Japan’s own tropical paradise

Japan’s southernmost prefecture, Okinawa is home to more than 150 islands and is known for its balmy weather and gorgeous sandy beaches. The subtropical destination has a complex history; it was once the independent Ryukyu Kingdom. In the 19th century, Okinawa was established as a Japanese prefecture, but was placed under American rule at the end of World War II in 1945. Control of Okinawa was only returned to Japan in 1972, and due to its rich history, the island archipelago has developed its own culture and traditions that are distinct from the rest of the country.

The best time to visit is during spring and late autumn, when the heat is not too extreme but still warm enough for a day on the beach. The best way to get there is by plane, and there are a number of flights from Tokyo and other major Japanese cities to Naha – Okinawa’s capital – as well as some of the surrounding islands.

The Okinawa six

Okinawa Island

Okinawa Island, otherwise known as Okinawa Honto, is the prefecture’s main island and the largest in the Ryukyu Archipelago. The island is also home to the prefectural capital of Naha and hence, it's quite urbanised. In Naha, you’ll find a single metro line that weaves through the city, along with a number of buses to help you get around the island. However, if you want to see everything Okinawa Island has to offer, renting a car is recommended, as a drive from one end of the island to the other can easily take over an hour.

Some of the main attractions include the expansive Churaumi Aquarium , Yomitan Pottery Village and the Unesco World Heritage-listed sacred site Sefa Utaki . On the northern end of the main island, the famous Soba Road is home to a wide range of Okinawa-style noodle restaurants and eateries. Naha’s Makishi Public Market is also a vibrant place to sample authentic Okinawan cuisine. Head to the fish market area to enjoy fresh sashimi made from local tropical fish.

Ishigaki is located within Okinawa’s Yaeyama Islands. This laidback island boasts some of the region’s most beautiful beaches as well as great snorkelling and diving, thanks to its abundant coral reefs. The town centre features a number of hotels and lively restaurants and is a good place to stay, especially if you’re without a car. The Yonekoyaki Craft Center on the northwest side of the island is a fun visit for art enthusiasts as its garden is full of colourful shisa statues, the Chinese-inspired guardian lions that are often placed at the entrance of homes and venues across Okinawa. Ishigaki is also a gateway to many of the surrounding Yaeyama Islands, reachable via ferry. The island has its own airport and accepts flights from Naha as well as major airports in Tokyo and Kansai.

Just a 10-minute ferry ride from Ishigaki is Taketomi Island, home to a well-preserved traditional Ryukyu village with no cars in sight. Luckily, the island is small enough to explore on foot, by bike or on a cart pulled by water buffalo. The village is a lovely place to stroll through, and you'll come across old-style houses surrounded by stone walls as well as a number of small shops, cafés and restaurants. The stunning beaches are also worth a visit for a quick dip in the ocean and to check out Okinawa’s famous star-shaped sand. If you’re looking to splurge, Taketomi is home to the luxurious Hoshinoya resort.

Iriomote is Okinawa’s second largest island and boasts lush tropical foliage, which makes it a great spot for adventure seekers. River kayak tours are a popular way to explore the island as you'll be paddling through dense jungles and mangrove forests. Iriomote is also a good spot for hiking, offering a number of routes ideal for experienced hikers. Iriomote lies 30-40 minutes by ferry from Ishigaki and there’s a public bus for getting around the island.

Miyako Island

North of Okinawa’s main island, Miyako Island is another hotspot for beachgoers as it's home to some of Japan's most breathtaking shorelines. The island also boasts brilliant coral reefs, which are great for avid snorkellers and divers. Head to Yoshino Beach for snorkelling: the area boasts an amazing array of colourful fish and other marine life. If you prefer a lazy dip instead, Maehama Beach ranks as one of the top beaches in Japan, known for its long stretches of white sand and beautiful sunset. Miyako Island has its own airport, so you can get there by plane from Naha or ferry from several other islands in Okinawa.

Kerama Islands

The Kerama Islands, a group of 36 islands that collectively form a national park, are located close to Okinawa’s main island, making for a popular detour from Naha. Zamami and Tokashiki are the two largest islands in the archipelago and are popular for their pristine beaches. Aside from sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling and stand-up paddleboarding, both islands feature strategic observation decks with sprawling views of the sea and surrounding islands. From January to March, you can go on a whale-watching boat tour to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures. 

With the ferry, Zamami is just under an hour from Naha whereas Tokashiki will take about 30 minutes. If you can’t bear to leave, there’s plenty of accommodation on the islands. You can also travel to the other Kerama Islands from both Zamami and Tokashiki.

The Ultimate Okinawa Travel Guide: Discover a Blue Zone Paradise

Hello, or Konichiwa as they say in Japan. My name is Brittany and I am lucky enough to live in beautiful Okinawa. I am originally from a small town in North Carolina but moved to Okinawa five years ago with my husband who got stationed here in the military. I have always been a wanderlust soul who has dreamed of traveling and seeing the world since I was a little girl.

When we were given the opportunity to move to Okinawa (I’ll be honest), I had never heard of it before. When I pictured Japan , I envisioned Tokyo vibes and city life. That made me hesitant to want to move to Japan because I love being out in nature and by the ocean. But a quick Google search led me to envision an island paradise with crystal blue ocean, white sandy beaches and palm trees lining the horizon. Basically the “Hawaii” of Japan. During that moment, I fell in love with the idea of moving to Okinawa – so that’s exactly what I did and now I never want to leave.

My Daily Life in Yomitan, Okinawa

I live on the main island of Okinawa in a small village called Yomitan . Okinawa is a small island but has a relatively large selection of areas to live in! There’s 11 cities, nine towns and six villages. I chose to live in Yomitan because it is quieter than the central part of the island, has more open space, some of the best beaches nearby and has a laid back “island vibe”.

A typical day for me consists of taking care of my dogs (Atlas and Wilder), going to the beach or finding spots to create content for Instagram or local businesses, and then hitting the gym. Everyday is different for me! I am truly lucky to be able to do what I love. I spend my days treasure hunting the shorelines, snorkeling, hiking, soaking up the sun and chasing sunsets.

On the weekends my husband and I get to explore new places, and go to local festivals and events. Even after living here for five years, I find something new every time I explore. I don’t think anyone could discover all parts of Okinawa and everything it has to offer. It’s like a magical island that keeps you on your toes with surprises around every corner.

Pros and Cons of Living in Okinawa

Okinawa is gaining popularity and becoming one of the top destinations in Asia, and I am not surprised! After living here for a while now, I still feel like I am on vacation. There is so much to do and see here! There’s truly so much I love about living here. The unique culture, the friendly local people, the scenery, the adventure, the cleanliness and safety, the list goes on and on.

Having the opportunity to travel all over Southeast Asia from here is also another perk! I have been to Bali, Thailand, the Philippines, Guam, Tokyo and plan on going to Vietnam in a few months. So whenever my husband and I get “island fever”, we pick a destination and go! Of course, there are downfalls to every place. I think one con is how unpredictable the weather can be. It’s fun living on an island but it will definitely keep you on your toes.

From June to November it is “typhoon season” here. Okinawa is right in the path of some scary seasonal typhoons. Luckily, since living here, I have only experienced one really bad storm. The buildings here are built to weather through these types of storms but it can still be scary, especially when there is nowhere else to go (since Okinawa is an island).

Another con for me, personally, is missing family from back home in the States. Times zones are so different and it’s hard being so far away from family sometimes. I am so thankful for social media though, because that is the only way I am able to keep in touch with my friends and family from back home. I think that is a big reason why I share so much of my life, so people back home can experience a little bit of paradise too!

Favorite Place in Okinawa: Cape Teniya

There are so many spots on the island that hold a special place in my heart but one spot that always takes my breath away is Cape Teniya . This place isn’t so much of a touristy spot and in my opinion those are the best places to find – places off the beaten path and that’s where you will find Cape Teniya. It is located in Nago and is a mile long trail that leads to the most breathtaking cliffside views. It is such a peaceful spot where you can see “Oki blue” waters for miles with the most stunning landscapes!

10 Best Places to Visit in Okinawa

1. kokusai street.

Kokusai-dori is a lively shopping street located in the heart of Naha City (the capital of Okinawa). It is lined with shops selling Okinawa delicacies and souvenirs. It is the main street of the whole prefecture! They also hold many festivals here during certain months of the year.

2. Shurijo Castle Park

Shuri Castle is an extraordinary castle that symbolizes the whole history and culture of Okinawa. This place will take you on a journey back in time through the reenacted rituals, ceremonies and celebrations.

3. Okinawa World

If you want to learn all about Okinawa, make sure you come to this unique theme park! There is so much to do and see here including the chance to learn about the culture, watch an Eisa show and explore a limestone cave.

4. Cape Manzamo

At Cape Manzamo, you will see spectacular cliff side views and a famed rock that developed like an upside-down elephant trunk. This is one of the most scenic rocks in Japan. Come during sunset, for a magical atmosphere!

5. Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the world where you can view majestic whale sharks up close! You can also watch a dolphin show and learn all about the species living in Okinawa’s beautiful waters.

6. Islands Surrounding Okinawa

There are over 160 small islands that surround Okinawa and a few remote ones reachable by car from Okinawa’s main island. But you can’t miss going to Kouri Island! This gem is hitched to Okinawa by a bridge and it only takes about 10 minutes to drive around it. You will find top attractions like Kouri Ocean Tower, Heart Rock and some pristine beaches.

7. Southeast Botanical Gardens

This is a must-visit in Okinawa. It is a botanical garden resort with over 1,300 kinds of rare tropical plants! There’s also an area where you can hold squirrel monkeys and feed capybaras. They hold seasonal events here throughout the year like the Water Lily Festival and an illumination event.

8. Mihama American Village

If you’re looking for a place to shop, eat and drink – this bustling and quirky village is the place to go! It has an American vibe and is lined with quaint cafes, great restaurants, live entertainment, a cinema and American-themed shops. There’s something for everyone here. Also, if you come during Christmas, they transform it into a magical wonderland.

9. Beaches of Okinawa

There’s a beautiful beach around every corner in Okinawa and no trip is complete without beach-hopping! Some of the top beaches are: Nirai, Mibaru, Toguchi, Uken, Araha, Bibi and Azama Sunsun Beach, and Beach 51. Also, don’t forget to bring or rent snorkel gear! Okinawa is one of the world’s best spots to snorkel. It’s a whole different world under the water. My favorite spots are Mermaid’s Grotto and Cape Maeda. I have seen sea turtles, manta rays, vibrant coral reefs and some of the bluest fish here!

10. Whale Watching

If you visit between January and March, you cannot miss watching the humpback whales! The whales migrate from Alaska to Japan, so you can book a whale watching tour and get close to these magnificent animals.

Distinct Island Culture of Okinawa

The culture in Okinawa is quite different to mainland Japan. Since it was once its own country, many people here still see themselves separate from mainland Japanese. Okinawan people have created a unique culture of their own which promotes long life and a sense of community. The people here are some of the nicest and most respectful people I have ever met!

They have their own culture that has been passed down the generations. Okinawa is one of the world’s “ Blue Zones ” which is where a population has a life expectancy much higher than the global average. How cool is that!? I will be driving down the road and see older Okinawans outside walking to the store, gardening or getting some form of exercise. It’s amazing to see! The people here live a slower and more relaxed pace of life. I just love the vibes of Okinawa and the way of living life “on island time”.

Amazing Food Scene of Okinawa

Okinawa is a foodie hotspot, with cuisine that is truly one-of-a-kind! There’s a mix of influences on the island from China, Korea, Southeast Asia and the USA. Some of the must try local foods are: Okinawa soba noodles, goya chanpuru, taco rice, umibudo (sea grapes), ishigaki beef, beni imo (purple sweet potato) and sata andagi (okinawan doughnuts).

There are so many wonderful restaurants and cafes here, but my favorites are: Kami Sushi, 808 Poke Bowls, Kouri Shrimp Bus, Yakiniku and Vongo & Anchor. Be sure to check out Onna no Eki Nakayukui Market! This is a seaside market that sells the best local foods and products Okinawa has to offer. Also, be prepared to see vending machines on every block (literally)!

Which Areas to Stay in Okinawa

There are so many great hotels, resorts, hostels and Airbnbs all over the island. If you’re deciding on what area to stay in, I would recommend staying in two or three different areas. Each area has something unique to offer and you definitely don’t want to spend your time in a car commuting from place to place. Naha is great for first time visitors as it’s near many top attractions. It’s a great place to explore and learn about the island’s history.

Onna is ideal for beach lovers (my personal favorite). Here you will find luxury resorts and boutique hotels. You can find some of the most beautiful hidden beaches here and it is the place to go for water activities. Nago is best for a nature-filled adventure. There are a variety of outdoor activities to do here like hiking, visiting eccentric parks and chasing waterfalls.

If you’re looking to really be close to nature you can stay in a treehouse! Yes, an actual treehouse resort and it is remarkable – what childhood dreams are made of! The Treeful Treehouse offers a total of four private tree houses that are nestled high among the jungle. You can’t go wrong with any place you choose in Okinawa because the hospitality in Okinawa is top notch, so wherever you stay just know you will be well taken care of!

Final Tips for Visiting Okinawa

So I am sure by now I have convinced you to come to Okinawa because who wouldn’t want to spend time in paradise, right? But before you visit, there’s a few things to know. Getting to the main island is accessible by Naha Airport. Domestic flights from the major cities in Japan fly here a couple of times a day. Direct international flights connect Okinawa with Taiwan, China, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

Getting around you can take the bus, a taxi or rent a car. The currency in Japan is the Japanese Yen. Credit and debit cards are accepted in most larger stores and restaurants, but a few smaller businesses only accept cash. So, it is wise to carry cash with you at all times. You can easily use the ATMs at the convenience stores like FamilyMart, 7-Eleven and Lawsons.

Also, tipping is not required in Okinawa and can be considered rude in some cases – so just keep that in mind! Consider purchasing a SIM card upon your arrival in Japan and make sure you always have your passport!

When is the best time to visit? Well, Okinawa is an ideal destination to visit any time of year because of the subtropical climate. But there are certainly better times to visit than others. Early May to June is the rainy season. July and August are the two hottest and humid months, and there is always a chance of a typhoon during this time. This is the peak time for tourism, so things can get a little crowded. My personal favorite months here are September and October. Temperatures are perfect and there is little rain.

Winter can be a little chilly (so it is not ideal for a beach vacation) but there are little to no crowds and many festivals/events are held during this time, and you can experience the cherry blossoms. One thing’s for sure, Okinawa knows how to celebrate the change in seasons – so anytime you choose to visit there will always be something to do and see! So pack your bags and get ready to experience a truly one-of-a-kind bucket list place!

Okinawa City is very different from the forested, mountainous north and the rolling hills and sugar cane of the south. You will find a strong American flavor mixing with the Okinawan and Japanese cultures because of the concentration of the U.S. bases in the area. Be sure to check out all the stores specializing in used military goods.

How to Get There

You can get to the city by bus or car.

To get to Okinawa City by bus, take bus 23 on the Gushikawa Line from Naha Bus Terminal and get off at Goya. The bus ride takes about an hour.

By car, simply head north on Route 330 for about an hour.

To reach the castle by car, take the Okinawa Expressway to the Kita-Nakagusuku exit and follow the signs to the castle. In light traffic, the drive takes about 20 minutes.

Home of oriental reggae

Although it is the second most populous metropolis in Okinawa, Okinawa City only came into being in 1974, when the towns of Koza and Misato were merged into one.

The U.S. military presence is still strong, with more than 20,000 American service members, family members, and Japanese employees living or working at nearby Kadena Air Base.

During the occupation, Koza was an exciting, exotic place, with bars, restaurants, and clubs catering to the servicemen, and much of the excitement remains.

Okinawan music

Okinawan music is distinctly different from Japanese. Some have described it as oriental reggae. And Okinawa City is the best place to hear it.

The legendary musician Shoukichi Kina is based here, and his fusion of Okinawan and Western music can still be heard in the clubs and on the streets today, sometimes by Kina himself.

Other attractions

Be sure to check out Park Avenue Street, Palmyra Street, and Gate 2 Street. There is a tourist information center catering especially to foreign visitors on Palmyra Street.

Shadows of the past

The walls, many of which are still standing, are so thick that Commodore Perry remarked on his visit in 1853 that they seemed strong enough to withstand cannon fire.

Okinawa is a beloved holiday destination among Japanese people. Okinawa is positioned like Hawaii in Japan because it has a tropical climate, white sandy beaches, coral sea, friendly people and a rich cultural background which has a different origin from traditional Japan. Okinawa is one of the most amazing destinations to visit when you are in Japan.

When you visit Okinawa, surely you will want to enjoy swimming and beaches, but there are also plenty of things to do and see on the main island of Okinawa. This article introduces you to these must-visit spots. The island is vertically long from north to south, so I will run them through by the north, central and south areas.

The northern part of Okinawa’s main island is famous for its rich native nature. If you can imagine typical tropical scenery like a blue sky, lush green rainforest and crystal-clear ocean, that is the northern part! It is recommended to travel by car and to wander around the natural beauty.

1. Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

The aquarium is one of the most popular spots on the Okinawa main island. It is located within the Ocean Expo Park and is the best place to view the sea creatures from around the Okinawa islands. The highlight of Churaumi Aquarium is the Kuroshio Sea Tank where gigantic whale sharks elegantly swim around. Great for everyone!

2. Nago Pineapple Park

As its name says, Nago Pineapple Park is the enjoyable theme park about pineapples! But it also provides the botanic gardens, the aerial path above the gardens and a dinosaur adventure section. It is worth taking time to look through the souvenir shops with its wide array of specialised pineapple products such as cakes, wine, juice, chocolates and much more!

3. Orion Happy Park (Beer Breweries)

If you are a beer lover, this is the must-visit spot for you. Orion Beer is the iconic beer of Okinawa and Orion Happy Park offers a tour of the beer factory where you can enjoy a beer tasting. The 40 min tour takes you to the beer-producing process from the raw ingredients to the tap beer! At the end of the tour, a couple of fresh beers await you! But make sure not to drive after drinking! It is a heavy penalty for drink driving in Japan.

4. Kouri-Ohashi (Kouri Island)

Kouri Ohashi is the bridge that crosses Yagajii Island to Kouri Island that can be accessed by car. It is a stunning spot to look out at the emerald green ocean, which is some of the clearest waters in Okinawa. Driving above the turquoise water makes your experience unforgettable.

Central Area

The central area of Okinawa’s main island is the resort area, where you can enjoy plenty of water activities. The cultural aspect of this area is also interesting. The Okinawa local word “Champuru”, meaning “the mixture”, can describe this area as a whole. There are a mixture of traditional Okinawa, American and modern Japanese cultures. It is fun to see what The Central Okinawa offers!

5. Cape Maeda

Cape Maeda is famous for the entrance of the “Blue Cave”, which is said to be the best scuba diving and snorkelling site in Okinawa main island. The inside of Blue Cave is absolutely spectacular and literally it is clear blue water inside. If you are an ocean lover, this is the must-visit spot for you to enjoy the best of Okinawa ocean experience.

However, Diving and snorkelling can be quite dangerous in the cave due to the tidal change, waves and other weather conditions. It is always highly recommended to experience Okinawa’s unforgettable ocean with knowledgeable guides to show you the best part of the Blue Cave.

6. Ryukyu Mura (Ryukyu Village)

Ryukyu Mura is a small theme park that takes you back in time to the Ryukyu Kingdom! There are different types of dance and music performances. 7. Sunset Beach

When it comes to the evening, as the name of the place tells you, Sunset Beach in Chatan Cho is considered to be the best spot for the sunset! This westward beach is a “Town-Style Beach” that offers many restaurants and bars, BBQ facilities, shopping areas, the entertainment park called “American Village”, along with great swimming spots.

The scenery of the Sun going down to the other side of the world and a chilled drink in your hand are the best friends to finish your day with!

8. Bios no Oka (Bios on the hill)

The green side of Okinawa is also unmissable. “Bios no Oka” gives you access to the lush green tropical rainforest of Okinawa. You can choose different ways to explore the lush green, such as a Lake cruise tour, Water Buffalo Cart, Farm Train Tour and Kayaking. The highly recommended options are taking a kayak or SUP (stand up paddleboard), as you can take the mangrove cruise adventure on your own. The southern side of Okinawa is where the capital city “Naha City” is located. From modern shopping areas to ancient ruins, this busy tropical area offers you lots of different fun activities. So many things are close by in this area, so take your time to explore there!

9. Shuri Castle Park

Shuri Castle was the centre of politics and culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom for 450 years. Sadly, the fire in October 2019 burnt and destroyed some parts of the castle. It is under re-construction to demonstrate the heart of Okinawa. Even though major damage to the castle occurred, Shuri Castle Park remains as one of the must-see spots in Okinawa. There are plenty of things to see such as period architecture along with lush botanical gardens. Surely you will be able to feel the history of old Okinawa there.

10. Shikinaen Park

In 2000, Shikinaen Park was added to the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Shikinaen Park was built in the late 18th century as the second residence for the kings of Ryukyu. This garden was built to entertain envoys of the Chinese emperors so that the garden was designed like a Chinese garden. However, Shikinaen Park collaborated the taste of Okinawa with the Chinese style such as the Ryukyu traditional guest house with a red tile roof and use of Ryukyu limestone in lots of parts in the garden. The garden will welcome you to enjoy peace of mind.

11. Makishi Public Market

Makishi Public Market has been the heart of Okinawa’s food culture as there is a large variety of tropical fish that are rarely seen on the main island of Japan. Why not buy some of your favourite colourful fish from the market and bring them upstairs to get them cooked on the spot? You can eat as Sashimi or choose the style of cooking you like; such as stir-fry, deep-fry, etc.

Around Makishi Public Market is also a popular shopping arcade. There are plenty of shops and food stalls near Makishi Public Market. If you like to explore the deep local experience, this is the place to go for you!

12. Kokusai Dori Street

“Kokusai Dori” means “International Street” in Japanese, and it goes for around 1.5km throughout the Naha CBD. You may find it little touristy, but if you are in a rush to find souvenirs, this is definitely the place for you.

There are so many shops, bars, restaurants and even nightclubs along the road. This bustling road offers so much fun to discover.

13. Naminoue-gu Shrine

Naminoue-gu Shine literally means “Shrine above the waves”. As the name implies, the building of the shrine is located on a cliff above the blue ocean. Although this is the highest class of Shrine worshipped in Okinawa, it is quite tourist-friendly and provides English Instructions from how to purify yourself with water to how to pray.

Unlike other Shrines that you visit in Kyoto or Tokyo, you will feel the beautiful sea breeze and see the great scenery of the blue ocean from the shrine. If you are looking for somewhere peaceful and spiritual, drop into Naminoue-gu Shrine, and purify yourself.

14. Himeyuri Peace Memorial Park

Okinawa was one of the bloodiest battlefields in the world during World War Two. Thousands and thousands of civilians and soldiers were killed on this beautiful island back then. The hardest battles took in place in the southern part of Okinawa. Himeyuri Peace Memorial Park was established in 1983 to commemorate this frightening battle of Okinawa. Take your time to wander through the park and learn about the history and tragedy of the Okinawan people.

15. Okinawa World

Okinawa World is an Okinawa cultural theme park. But it is not a normal cultural park like others, the main attraction of Okinawa World is the massive limestone cave called “Gyokusendo”. This cave stretches for 5 km length in total and 850m of this cave is open to the public. Comfortable walking paths are set to entertain everyone. The limestone cave is also beautifully lit up.

In addition, Eisa dance in Okinawa World is also a must-watch. So, take your time to discover the limestone cave and experience the Okinawa culture!

16. The Valley of Gangala

The Valley of Gangala is only 300m away from Okinawa World, so it is a good idea to hop between the two attractions in one day. The valley used to be a limestone cave until 100,000 years ago, and now it is a tropical rainforest. When you step into the forest, you will feel the ancient atmosphere of the forest. This site can be only explored with their English-speaking guide. It is really worth a visit if you are a nature lover.

Okinawa Islands (Okinawa Shoto)

The Okinawa Islands (���ꏔ��, Okinawa Shotō) are a group of about two dozen islands around Okinawa Main Island (Okinawa Honto). They are one of three major island groups making up the Okinawa Prefecture , alongside the Miyako Islands and Yaeyama Islands further south.

Okinawa Main Island , the former center of the Ryukyu Kingdom, is home to more than half of the prefecture's population, as well as the prefectural capital Naha and the US military bases. It is the prefecture's busiest and most developed island.

The other islands in the Okinawa Shoto are much smaller than the main island, and several of them are uninhabited. Many of the smaller islands, such as Kume Island and the Kerama Islands , offer great snorkeling and diving and a more laid-back, traditional pace of life.
