Private and Luxury Tours of Malaysia

If you are thinking about where to go next, our experts recommend  visiting Malaysia in 2024 . Wandering the capital Kuala Lumpur on a luxury tour of Malaysia, you can see remnants of the old KL in Chinatown’s shophouse-lined streets. The colonial buildings of Merdeka Square are in stark contrast to the Petronas Towers, the world’s tallest twin buildings. Yet both represent Malaysia—the traditional and the modern, the indigenous and the colonial.

English afternoon tea with scones, Malaysian laksa and roti canai, and endless rounds of satay fresh off the grill, are all popular. In  Penang , colonial Georgetown’s Lorong Baru food hawker zone is awash with everything from Chinese favorite congee to Indian-inspired nasi kandar. If you want to scratch beneath the surface to understand the Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences, as well as those of indigenous tribes, we can help you. Enchanting Travels experts are proficient at creating luxury travel itineraries that take guests under and over, above and beyond, to explore this country’s cultural mosaic.

Island-hopping is just one the many thrills of Malaysia’s  Langkawi  archipelago. Revel in days filled with golden sunsets and pristine sand beaches, and sipping exotic cocktails at beachfront cafés. You’ll get majestic aerial views from the Sky Bridge, cable car, and even from a zip line on the eco-canopy tour of the rainforest. Water sports facilities abound, to suit every level of challenge and fitness.

Malaysia has outstanding snorkeling and diving opportunities. World-famous for serious diving enthusiasts is Sipadan, across from peninsular Malaysia in the Celebes Sea, just off Malaysian Borneo, where the last remaining orangutans of the world live. Located by the Kinabatangan River, visit the Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation center to meet these shaggy-haired creatures. Those doleful eyes never fail to capture the hearts of those who encounter them.

From Mount Kinabalu to the Batu Caves, Malaysia is a multi-faceted land. Cool, fragrant air greets you in the Cameron Highlands, full of tea plantations and strawberry farms. At Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak the underground limestone cave systems, including one of the longest networks of caves in the world, are great for an adventurous detour.

Malaysia is a true mix of ethnicities -- Malays, Chinese, Indians, Nyonya (Straits Chinese of noble descent) and more -- as well as religions, architecture, and cuisines. You'll find both ultra-modern skyscrapers in the capital of Kuala Lumpur (KL) and highly traditional longhouses in the jungle settings of East Malaysia, which occupies about a third of the island of Borneo.

East Malaysia's Sabah is the site of 13,000-foot Mt. Kinabalu, a favorite spot for climbers. West Malaysia, a peninsula just south of  Thailand , is home to KL -- with its nearly 1,500-foot-high Petronas Twin Towers -- as well as the resort island of Penang (known for its food) and the Dutch-influenced town of Malacca. It all makes Malaysia a don't-miss Southeast  Asia  destination.

Beaches in Malaysia

It’s all about beaches in Malaysia. With some of the most exceptional beaches in Southeast Asia, not to mention the world, Malaysia is a sunbathing, snorkeling, diving and beachcombing paradise. Beaches are everywhere in Malaysia, spread out amongst 878 islands and archipelagos, from the most popular - Langkawi and the Perhentians - to off-the-beaten-path beach secrets.

Among the most amazing beaches in Malaysia are:

1. Long Beach, Perhentian Kecil : Known for its incredible turquoise waters and bustling nightlife.

2. Turtle Beach, Perhentian Besar : Swim with turtles and snorkel with reef sharks at one of Malaysia’s favorite island beaches.

3. Coral Beach, Redang Island : Top beach destination in Malaysia for diving and snorkeling.

4. Kapas Island, coast of Marang : One of Malaysia’s secret beaches, perfect for a quiet island vacation and not yet too touristy

5. Monkey Bay Beach, Tioman Island : A frequent stop on a Malaysia snorkeling tour. Guests can also hike here in about an hour from Salang.

6. Pantai Cenang, Langkawi : A busy, yet fantastic Langkawi beach with powder-white sand and an abundance of world travelers

7. Paya Beach, Tioman Island : A great Malaysia beach choice for snorkeling

8. Teluk Belanga Beach, Pangkor Island : Known for its stunning emerald water and quiet surroundings

9. Sipadan Island Beach, Sabah : Known as one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world - look for giant turtles and white-tip sharks

Malaysian Culture

Cultural tourism in Malaysia is intriguing, a melting pot of cultures stemming back to the country’s place on the spice route so long ago.

The people of Malaysia are among its many treasures … delve into the country’ three main races - Malay, Chinese and Indian - and learn about their historical and cultural significance in the region. Plus, you’ll discover the countless other, smaller populations who live in Malaysia, from Kadazan-Dusun to Bidayuh to Nyonya.

Look for small-group Malaysia cultural tours that include visits to some of the following destinations:

1. Batu Caves

Take a tour of 400-million-year-old Hindu temples set in these limestone caves. These temples are among the most visited Hindu shrines outside of India. Don’t miss the 140-foot-high Murugan statue marking the cave entrance.

2. Pinang Peranakan Mansion

Your Malaysia culture tour will likely include a visit to this cultural center, where you can learn all about the Peranakans, well-to-do Chinese traders who settled here. The mansion reflects the architectural style of the region, a blend of Chinese, Malay and colonial British influences.

3. Jonker Street Night Market

Head to Malacca’s Chinatown to tour this lively night market, a highlight of your Malaysia cultural holiday. The sights and smells of the market range from global street food to antiques and souvenirs. Along the way, your Malaysia tour guide will point out various temples and mosques that line the street.

4. Kek Lok Si Temple

Many tour highlighting Malaysian culture will include a visit to this temple, the country’s largest Buddhist complex. Stroll the vast grounds to take in the seven-story pagoda, 10,000 alabaster and bronze Buddha statues, ponds, pools and gardens. One of the best times to visit Kek Lok Si Temple is during Chinese New Year, when thousands of brightly lit hanging lanterns adorn the temple.

5. Langkawi

Beyond its beautiful beaches, Langkawi is a great place to immerse yourself in Malay culture. Small group tours of Langkawi can introduce you to the local islanders, many of whom are fishermen and farmers. Take a driving tour of the countryside and see the paddy fields and meet the villagers out running errands by bicycle. Visit the historic Field of Burnt Rice and learn local folklore at the Gua Cerita, or Cave of Legends.

6. Blue Mansion, George Town

Tour the most-photographed structure in George Town, a 28-room mansion from the 1880s. The blue exterior dates to a time when this color was a hallmark of the town - it’s achieved through an indigo-based limewash. Pay attention to the mansion’s feng shui and uniquely local features and listen to stories of the owner who commissioned the mansion for his seventh wife.

7. Kellie’s Castle, Perak

Look for the ghosts that are said to haunt the hallways of this moderately restored, Gothic- and Moorish-style castle.

8. Sabah Museum

Take a guided tour of Sabah Museum to learn about the area’s indigenous cultures, take a peek at traditional attire and crafts and learn about the customs of the Dusun, Murut, Rungus and Bajau peoples. There are musical instruments to play, embroidery to appreciate and Chinese ceramics dating to AD 1300. Ask your Sabah tour guide about visiting the nearby Heritage Village, where you can see Kadazan bamboo houses and tribal dwellings.

Top Travel Activities in Malaysia

Who are Malaysia tours good for? With a wide range of activities, Malaysia is a favorite for just about anyone. Look for tours that give you plenty of time to explore this fascinating Southeast Asian country, from the beaches to the rain forest to the big city.

The best Malaysia vacations will include several of the following activities in both Western and Eastern Malaysia.

Meeting an Orangutan

Wildlife tours of Malaysia will undoubtedly focus on the delightful orangutan. Visit with orphans at the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre, where about 60 to 80 of the primates live at any given time.

Enjoying Beach Time in the Perhentian Islands

Where will you find the most beautiful beaches in Malaysia? Head to the Perhentian Islands for the prettiest beaches and most stunning water and coral reefs. Swim and snorkel with sea turtles and rainbow-hued tropical fish, even small sharks. There are two main islands to tour in the Perhentians: Kecil, the smaller, and Besar, the larger. Both are covered in jungle and hiking trails - no roads, so arrange a Perhentian Island tour to make the most of your visit.

City Time in Kuala Lumpur

Take some time away from the beach to tour Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia and home to the impressive Petronas Towers.

Trek in the Rain Forest

Outdoor enthusiasts traveling to Malaysia will enjoy touring Taman Negara National Park, boasting one of the world’s oldest rain forests - some say it’s more than 130 million years old! An abundance of foot trails wind their way through the forest making this a top hiking destination in Malaysia.

Eat in Malaysia

Foodies will love the Malaysian cuisine they’ll encounter throughout their tour. Even the smallest, hole-in-the-wall places dish out the most incredible tastes. Your Malaysia tour guide can point out local favorites. Some of the best Malay cuisine to try includes chicken satay, Char kway teow, laksa and nasi goreng.

Go Diving in Sipadan

Active travel tours in Malaysia may include the option to dive in Sipadan - and if you’re an avid diver, you’ve likely heard of this amazing spot. If you haven’t dived before and would like to learn, this is an incredible place to start. Ask your Malaysia tour operator about diving certification options in Sipadan.

Wildlife in Malaysia

Wildlife tours are popular in Malaysia thanks to the country’s pristine rainforest, home to an incredible array of animal and plant life. From the orangutans and pygmy elephants of Borneo to the sun bear and the Sumatran rhino, there are wildlife wonders waiting to be discovered on your Malaysia wilderness vacation.

Among the best places to see the wildlife of Malaysia are:

1. Danum Valley Conservation Area : Tours of Borneo focusing on wildlife will likely visit the Danum Valley rainforest, considered to be the world’s oldest. Birdwatching tours in Malaysia flock here for the 300 bird species. On the ground, you’ll see orangutan, proboscis monkey, sun bears, clouded leopard and, if you’re lucky, the rare Bornean rhinoceros.

2. Taman Negara National Park : One of the easiest national parks to tour in Malaysia due to its central location, Taman Negara is home to the rare rafflesia, elephants, monkeys and lizards.

3. Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre : Where do you go to see orangutans in Malaysia? Visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre to get up close and personal with these adorable, rust-colored creatures. The reserve is home to rescued orangutans, who are taught the skills they’ll need to survive in the wild.

4. Batang Ai National Park : To tour one of the most undisturbed and pristine wildlife areas in Malaysia, visit Batang Ai. The dense rainforest is home to many endangered animals, including wild orangutan, bearded pig, clouded leopard and gibbon.

5. KL Forest Eco Park : Birdwatching tours in Malaysia typically include a visit to this eco park in the middle of Kuala Lumpur. Here in the midst of the urban capital, birdwatchers can see more than 200 species, as well as civet cats and silver leaf monkeys.

6. Langkawi : Diving and snorkeling vacations in Langkawi boast excellent sightings of more than 250 fish species and 50 different types of coral. Most tours center on the main island of Langkawi - Pulau - for its welcoming fishing villages, incredible beaches and abundant marine life.

7. Kinabalu National Park : Visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site in Borneo - Malaysia’s first. It’s one of the world’s most biologically diverse areas, making it a popular stop on a Southeast Asia wildlife tour. Look for 90 different species of mammal, 300 bird species and more than 5,000 species of plants.

8. Royal Belum State Park : Where can you see a sun bear in Malaysia? Will I see a Malayan tiger in Southeast Asia? If you tour Royal Belum State Park, bordering Thailand, it’s likely. Sumatran rhinos, white-handed gibbon join Malayan tiger and Sumatran rhinos as top billers in this remote nature reserve. Birdwatching tours are popular in this area of Malaysia for the more than 300 different species found here, including all of the species of Malaysian hornbill.

9. Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre : Visit with the world’s second-most endangered bear, Malaysia’s sun bear. Watch from two elevated walkways and viewing platforms as the bears climb, cavort and sunbathe.

Souvenirs from Malaysia

Everyone wants to bring home a memento of their Malaysia travels, something to remember their amazing Southeast Asia tour by or as a gift for friends or family.

What kind of souvenirs is Malaysia famous for? Look for one (or five) of the following favorite items to buy in Malaysia:

Welcome to Malaysia!

Malaysia is an amazing and diverse country that has something to offer everyone.  If you’re looking for amazing food, gorgeous islands, and beautiful landscapes — Malaysia is a destination you should highly consider for your next holiday.  I have traveled pretty extensively through Peninsular Malaysia, and it has grown to become one of my favorite countries in entire world!  I’ve compiled this Malaysia Travel Guide as a source for people planning trips to this amazing country.

This guide will go over trip highlights, how to get around Malaysia, Malaysia itineraries, and general travel advice!

Hope you enjoy reading my Malaysia Travel Guide and favorite photos from my travels!

Note:  This Malaysia Travel Guide will focus entirely on Peninsular Malaysia.  I have never traveled to Sabah or Sarawak, and am not too well informed about those areas of the country.

Traveling to Malaysia soon…?  I’d definitely recommend purchasing the Malaysia Lonely Planet Travel Guide !  I pretty much always travel with a LP guidebook, and it can definitely a huge asset on the road!

Malaysia itinerary

You’ll most likely be starting your Malaysian holidays in the amazing capital city — Kuala Lumpur.  This is truly a special place with friendly people, beautiful sights, and delicious food (just like the rest of Malaysia).  During my travels in South-East Asia , I was lucky enough to call this city home for awhile.  The first time I visited Kuala Lumpur I actually didn’t enjoy the city too much, but after spending more time there I discovered how special the city really is.

Check out the following blog posts I’ve written:

  • 10 Amazing Things to do in Kuala Lumpur
  • Heli Lounge, Kuala Lumpur; Drinks + Sunset on a Helipad
  • The Absolute Best Thing To Do in Kuala Lumpur

TOP KUALA LUMPUR TIP

It’s luxury complex that has all the amenities you’d want, perfectly located, and  has the most amazing infinity pool.   There is a mall right next door with a grocery store, movie theater, and tons of other shops.  Also, if you sign up for AirBNB with this link , you’ll get $38 off your first visit!   Which is easily a free-nights accommodation at The Regalia!   Trust me.  You want to stay here!

Best Hostel in Kuala Lumpur

Penang is the cultural hotspot in Malaysia!  You’ll fall in love with it’s busy streets, beautiful artwork, and enchanting history.  Oh, and the food is absolutely amazing.   Most people come to Penang only planning a few day stay, but end up staying much longer than they expected.  You can spend a day on Batu Ferringi beach, hike through the National Park, and take the journey up to Penang Hill for spectacular views of the entire city.

Best things to do in Penang:

  • Beach day and sunset on Batu Ferringi Beach
  • Spend some time hiking through the National Park
  • Take a visit to Penang Hill for spectacular views of the city
  • Stroll through Georgetown and check out all the artwork
  • Eat at Penang’s famous hawker stalls

Officially known as Langkawi the Jewel of Kedah, Langkawi is an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea, around 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia.  It’s right at the border of Thailand, and is a popular place to visit for traveller’s going north/south between Malaysia and Thailand.  It is truly an amazing island with amazing things to do, cheap accommodations, tax-free booze, and beautiful landscape.

Cameron Highlands

Malaysia Itinerary

The Cameron Highlands is a stunning hill station in central peninsular Malaysia, and has become a popular destination for visitors in Malaysia. Roughly the size of Singapore, the Cameron Highlands covers a large stretch of land, and there’s tons to see, do, and explore.  You’ll fall in love with the beautiful green tea plantations, and will leave you speechless when you visit the highest peak in the Cameron Highlands

Taman Negara

Teman Negara National Park is the perfect place for travelers who love wild life viewing, jungle trekking, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, camping and many more. It is well established as one of the most popular ecotourism in Malaysia.  Popular activities include the canopy walk, jungle trekking, rapid shooting, cave exploration, and boat cruises.

Recommend days spent here:  1-2 days max

Check out the Teman Negara National Park website for more information

The Perhentian Islands

Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

Welcome to paradise.  The Perhentian Islands consist of both Perhentian Kecil & Perhentian Besar.  They are both absolutely stunning, and the minute you step foot on of the two islands you’ll never want to leave.   I’ve visited Perhentian Kecil on two different occasions now, and I definitely would not mind going back for a third.  The beaches are gorgeous, the atmosphere is relaxing, and the nightlife can get pretty crazy.

Perhentian Kecil is more for a younger crowd.  It’s much more lively at night and has an incredible fireshow.  Perhentian Besar has a lot more resorts, and is a bit more family oriented.

If you’re going to Malaysia — you’d be mistaken to skip the Perhentian Islands!

Check out my blog posts on this paradise island!

Pulau Kapas

Pulau Kapas, Malaysia

Pulau Kapas is an idyllic island escape for those looking for a bit more of a remote location.  You won’t find any big crazy resorts, fast wi-fi connection, or luxury restaurants.  What you will be rewarded with is amazingly beautiful water, suburb underwater life, and an extremely laidback atmosphere.  Pulau Kapas is truly a Malaysian gem, and I guarantee if you go for a couple days you won’t regret it!

Tioman Island

Malaysia Travel

If you’ve looking for some more island action, than definitely make your way over to Tioman Island.  It isn’t as gorgeous as the Perhentians or Kapas, but it has some of the best scuba-diving sites in the whole country.  The island is pretty massive, and is a 2-hour ferry ride from the mainland.  It is a DUTY-FREE island, which makes drinking on this island pretty cheap!  It’s a popular destination for weekend trips from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, so book in advance if you plan on being there on a Saturday & Sunday.  If you do plan on going, I’d definitely recommend staying on ABC Beach.

When I was there, I happened to catch really bad weather, and had some transportation issues.  I still had a great trip.  Read about it below:

  • A Weekend Trip to Tioman Island

Melaka is just a short bus ride away from Kuala Lumpur, and can be a great place to spend one night.  It’s small enough to walk around, explore, and try some delicious food.  There’s not a whole lot to see here, but it’s definitely worth the visit.

To plan your visit, check out this post titled:

  • Top 15 Places To See in Melaka

Getting Around Malaysia

The Malaysian transportation is some of the best I’ve found in all of South-East Asia.  Prices are relatively low, there’s tons of options, and they are all relatively comfortable.

Flights / Airfare

Malaysia is actually a really easy country to book extremely cheap domestic flights.

  • Malindo Air

If you know your exact dates, you can actually get great flight deals.  Malindo Air is really great and includes 1 20kh checked bag.  These are particularly useful for flights to/from Kuala Lumpur.

Perhentian Islands

Perhentian Islands

Traveling around Malaysia on the bus transport is actually really easy, budget friendly, and comfortable.  There are loads of different companies that offer a ton of different routes.  None of the journeys take that long, and the busses can actually be really nice.  For bus schedules, routes, and fares, check out the website below.  I’ve booked online tickets with them, and made the process extremely easy.  You can just show the email confirmation at the bus station, and receive your ticket.

Pulau Kapas

  • Hitchhiking in Malaysia

Just like in any destination, you should be careful when hitching a ride alone.  With that being said, Hitchhiking in Malaysia can be done, and it’s actually not too difficult.  I met these Spanish girls on Pulau Kapas who found a ride all the way from Teman Negara – Kuala Terranganu.  It’s not that it saves a ton of money, but it’s a great way to meet some local people, and have a unique travel experience.  For more information on Hitchhiking in Malaysia check the website below:

  • Trains in Malaysia

I’ve actually never taken a train in Malaysia, but I have heard that the system works out.  I almost boarded a train from Penang – Kuala Lumpur, but ended up extending my stay in Penang, and finding a flight that was cheaper than the train!  I honestly think that dealing with trains on other routes would just get complicated, so I’d just personally recommend Flights and Busses over taking trains in Malaysia.

Renting A Car

I’ve never rented a car and explored Malaysia on my own (mainly because I’m a solo budget traveler), but I have had some friends rent a van and go on weekend trips from Kuala Lumpur.  It’s definitely not the best option for everyone,

One Week Malaysia Itinerary

If you are only in Malaysia for a brief visit, than you want to enjoy your holiday.  My advice would be to enjoy 2-3 days in Kuala Lumpur, and fly to either Penang for 3-4 days.  You don’t want to rush around each destination, because you will want enough time to enjoy each place and do all the activities.

Two Week Malaysia Itinerary

Days 1-3 — Kuala Lumpur

Take a morning bus to Teman Negara

Days 4-5 — Teman Negara

Book the early bus ticket to the Cameron Highlands

Days 6-7 —  Exploring the Cameron Highlands

Book the early departure bus to Penang

Days 8-10 — Penang

One Month in Malaysia Itinerary

If you have a full month in Malaysia, I honestly would just recommend to follow the 3-week itinerary, but travel slower.  This will also allow flexibility with the domestic flights, and also spending less time on travel.  I would also recommend staying in Kuala Lumpur for an extra couple days, and doing a one-day trip to Melaka.  If you want to see it all, you can switch up this itinerary to add Pulau Tioman, but I would honestly skip it.  I found it to be really touristy, difficult to get to, and there are much better islands and beaches in Malaysia.

If you have even more time in Malaysia, look out for cheap domestic flights over to Borneo.  You could scuba-dive off the coasts of the world famous Sipadan island, or hike the highest peak in Malaysia — Mt. Kinabalu!

General Malaysia Travel Advice

Eat as much as you possibly can!  The food in Malaysia is absolutely incredible.  When you get to Kuala Lumpur, check out a Nasi Kandar and try the various curries, Roti Canai, and Nasi Lemak!

Interact with the locals!  Malaysian people are extremely friendly, and generally speak really great English!  They are very open and welcome to tourism, and can be a great experience.

Understand you are in a Muslim country!  Be respectful with your clothing!

Get a local SIM card!  Malaysia has a wide variety of phone plans, and it will come in handy to have 3G / 4G internet when your traveling.  I’d recommend Tune Talk.  There are great prices and deals, and it’s good coverage.

Download my Free E-Book — 77 Amazing, Helpful, Money-Saving Tips for Backpacking South-East Asia .  This goes over a ton of valuable information for Malaysia!

If you haven’t figured it out by reading this post, I have traveled pretty extensively throughout Malaysia.   I think it’s an amazing country, and am always thinking about going soon and exploring different parts.  I’m actually dying to get over to Borneo, but I’m sure that time will come eventually.

Glad I could help out man! It really is an amazing country! I can’t wait to get back and explore even more.

Thanks for the information. It is really helpful. I am planing to go to Malaysia next month but i only have a week. Perhentian islans sounds like an amaizing place. I am between going there or visit Bali. What do you reckon? Thanks

Regards Gara

Hmm. Bali or Perhentian? Tough Decision. TO be honest, I’d probably choose Bali because you can do a whole lot more in one week. Bali is kinda small, but packed with stuff to do. Perhentian is more of a chill-out, diving destination. Let me know if you have any other questions.

The group was also fantastic, full of laid back, like minded, wildlife lovers, from all over the world. Thank you!!

Real Borneo

Awesome adveturous tour. Includes jungle stay (pic above) where we went spotlighting wildlife at night, slept in a tree house, planted trees for reforestation and went out on the river to look for monkeys and orangutangs along the river banks. We also did a homestay. Due to the earth quake this year we couldnt climb kinabalu but we still did a very challenging trek through cave systems in the junlge and by doing this Geckos were making sure hte mountain guides weren't out of work while the mountain trails were repaired. Our guide was so knowledgable having grown up in the jungle since the age of 4. The country is full of wildlife, the people are friendly and the place is non touristy. Meals and beer were cheap. wifi in the country is dodgy. I would definately go back to see the other half of the country one day... My tip pack lots of quick dry sports clothing because the jungle is HOT! Our group was a good mix of international people, all young, fit, active and most importantly easy going!

Borneo Family Holiday Comfort Tour

Borneo Family Holiday Comfort

We loved our Intrepid Borneo Family Comfort trip in July 19. Sheila was our guide and helped make it a magical experience for us. Our 7 year old daughter loved the whole trip, from seeing the amazing wildlife to the stunning views and lots of fun and games with the other guests in our group. Sheila was great at looking after our group and was very organised and helpful. We even managed to see loads of wildlife up close which exceeded our expectations. The food was ok for vegetarians- both my wife and I are vegetarians. The accommodation was fab too. We would highly recommend Intrepid again, it’s great for getting to see lots in a short space of time - in a way that felt manageable and thoroughly enjoyable.

Table of Contents

Are you going to Malaysia soon? A 7-day tour of Malaysia is the perfect way to discover this fascinating country in Southeast Asia. Although Malaysia is in the shadow of Thailand and Vietnam, it is a very beautiful country to visit. The vibrant capital of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur .

During your tour of a week or perhaps 10 days, you can explore both West Malaysia and part of the island of Borneo. During this itinerary in Malaysia , we will visit the iconic Petronas Twin Towers and colonial Georgetown. We conclude this itinerary in Malaysia on the beach in Langkawi .

From here, you can easily continue to Thailand. Or vice versa, from the south you can go to Singapore and Indonesia. The northern part of Borneo also belongs to Malaysia, but we will discuss that in a separate article about the Kinabatangan River .

You can optionally end your 7-day tour on the mainland in Borneo with a visit to the Kinabatangan River or go to the east side of Malaysia and do some island hopping ( Tioman or Perhentian Islands).

How many days do you need to visit Malaysia?

It is certainly possible to see a large part of Malaysia in 7 days. But if possible we would still recommend 10 or 14 days . You can also visit the Perhentian and Tioman islands and of course Borneo.

However, a 7-day tour can be a good start if you are limited in time. In this short period, you can visit some of the highlights, such as the capital Kuala Lumpur, historic Georgetown, and the cooler highlands of the Cameron Highlands.

For people who also want to explore Borneo , we recommend at least 7 to 10 days.

Batu Caves Staires Statue Malaysia

When is the best time to travel to Malaysia?

The best time to visit Malaysia is from December to February . During these months the weather is pleasant and there is less rainfall compared to the other months of the year.

However, it is important to also consider the specific location you want to visit in Malaysia, as the climate can vary from region to region. This is the best period for the itinerary Malaysia we propose (Western Malaysia).

There can be a big difference between eastern Malaysia and Borneo. Borneo is better from March to October. From April to August you have the best chance of spotting orangutans. Be sure to read our article about Borneo.

options tour malaysia

What documents do you need to visit Malaysia?

First of all, you need a valid International passport. Make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months after the date of arrival in Malaysia.

In most cases, a visa for Malaysia is not required for a stay of less than 90 days. This applies to most nationalities, but there are some exceptions that require an e-visa. This can easily be requested via the e-visa portal.

Upon arrival in Malaysia, customs officials may ask you to show a return or onward ticket and proof of at least USD 500 for the stay. It is also useful to have your hotel reservation at hand. We recommend that you collect and keep these documents before departure.

Is Malaysia safe with children?

We believe that Malaysia is a safe destination for families with children. As always, it is important to exercise caution and use common sense.

Malaysia has a well-developed infrastructure and public transport, which makes it easy to get around and visit interesting places.

Although vaccinations may be required in certain parts of the country, the overall health situation in Malaysia is good. Make sure you obtain advice about required vaccinations before departure, which you can do on Wanda.be . Make sure you have a decent mosquito repellent with you.

In Malaysia, you will also find many theme parks, zoos, and beaches. The Malaysian people are known for being friendly and helpful, which will make you feel welcome and comfortable during your stay.

What is the best way to travel to Malaysia?

First and foremost, it is important to know that Malaysia consists of two parts: West Malaysia and East Malaysia (on the island of Borneo). Depending on your route and the region you want to visit, there are different options for traveling to Malaysia.

Most international flights arrive at Kuala Lumpur Airport (KUL), the capital of Malaysia. From Europe, there are direct flights to Kuala Lumpur with Malaysia Airlines, or you can opt for a stopover via other airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, or Etihad. Look here for the best prices for your flight tickets.

options tour malaysia

If you are planning to visit East Malaysia, there are several options for traveling to Borneo. For example, you can take a domestic flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu (BKI) or Kuching (KCH), the main airport in Borneo. These flights are mainly operated by airlines such as AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, and Malindo Air.

Even if you are only going to Malaysia for a week, make sure you choose a comfortable and efficient mode of transportation to save time and energy. A common method of getting around in West Malaysia is by rental car. You can also travel by train/bus. There are also many ferries to the various islands.

Internet in Malaysia

Without mobile internet, things will be a bit difficult in Malaysia. For example, if you want to take a taxi via GRAB or check the directions on Google Maps. Nowadays you can opt for an e-SIM at, for example, the local 7-Eleven store (Celkom is a good provider). If you run out of data you can purchase an upgrade.

You can also order your e-SIM online in advance. Take a look at Airalo.com . For example, for 2GB you pay about €8 for a week.

Itinerary Malaysia 7 days

Day 1 and 2: kuala lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur, the bustling capital of Malaysia, is the perfect start to our 7-day tour in Malaysia. This metropolis is known for its modern architecture, including the iconic Petronas Twin Towers.

What are the best activities in Kuala Lumpur

  • Petronas Twin Towers : You can visit these iconic towers and walk across the bridge from where you have a beautiful view of the Kuala Lumpur skyline. You will also like the ride with the futuristic elevator. You can order tickets in advance so you don’t have to queue.
  • Jalang Alor: In the evening this street turns into one large open-air restaurant. You can find anything to eat. From the traditional nasi lemak to french fries.
  • Petaling Street Market: good stop to do some shopping Spices, watches, …
  • Central Market : Here you will find the most beautiful souvenirs, and the building itself is also worth a visit.

options tour malaysia

  • Sri Mahamariamman Temple : this is the oldest Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur and is close to Chinatown. The entrance is free.
  • Guan Di Temple : This Chinese temple is also definitely worth a visit. Here you will find, among other things, a copper sword weighing 59kg. If you can lift it, you have magical powers, so definitely give it a try!
  • Merdeka Square : Historically one of the most important places for Malaysia because this is where the national flag was raised for the first time. A parade still takes place here every year.
  • National Museum : here you can learn more about the history and culture of Malaysia
  • Sultan Abdul Samad gebouw : beautiful building at Merdaka square

options tour malaysia

  • KLCC Lake Symphony Water Fountain Show – KLCC Park : Every evening at 8 p.m., 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. you will see a light and fountain show here. Definitely worth a visit. In the park itself, you will find a large playground.
  • Batu Caves : These Hindu temples are located north of Kuala Lumpur and are definitely a must see. The large statue of the Hindu god and the colorful stairs are beautiful. Read our article about the Batu Caves to find out more about how to get there and what there is to do.
  • KL Tower : From this tower you have a 360° view of Kuala Lumpur, not for people afraid of heights. You can order tickets here , possibly with an extra film in the SD theater.
  • Thean Hou Temple : the largest Chinese temple in Kuala Lumpur. Built on a hill and is best reached by taxi.

You can find more information about Kuala Lumpur in our extensive article about what to do in Kuala Lumpur (with children).

Where can you stay in Kuala Lumpur?

1000 Miles hostel (€) : This hostel is located in the center of Kuala Lumpur and is very close to some of Kuala Lumpur’s main attractions such as Merdeka Square, Masjid Jamek, Petaling Street and Central Market.

Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral (€€) : This hotel offers modern rooms with stylish décor and beautiful city views. It also has an outdoor pool, gym, and on-site restaurant. On top of that, it is close to the Sentral Station (connected by a bridge), which offers a direct connection to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. There is also a breakfast buffet.

Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur (€€€): This hotel offers world-class accommodation with views of the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. It features an outdoor pool, a spa and wellness center, and an on-site restaurant known for its delicious Chinese cuisine. The hotel is within walking distance of the KLCC LRT station and Suria KLCC Mall.

We dedicated a complete article with the best family accomodations in Kuala Lumpur.

Day 3: Cameron Highlands

After our adventure in Kuala Lumpur, we drive to the Cameron Highlands. You can do this with a rental car or book your own transport via 12GO . We first went by train to Ipoh and from there by bus to the Cameron Highlands (Tanah Rata). Because we had more time, we stayed in Ipoh for a few more days.

This area is known for its beautiful tea fields and cooling climate. The most famous tea plantation is probably that of BOH. There, in addition to the breathtaking panoramic views, you also have the opportunity to taste local teas.

options tour malaysia

You can also book a tour from Kuala Lumpur , but then it will take you 12 hours. You will then visit the tea plantation, waterfall, and some gardens.

We were less fans of the butterfly gardens, strawberry greenhouse, cactus valley, etc…. that was nice but still a bit too touristy for our liking. You can also choose to take a tour where you see the beautiful sunrise over the tea plantations. But be sure to check the weather before you book. We were unlucky and didn’t see any sun, but the jeep ride was fun.

In addition to the tea plantations, you should definitely also visit the Mossy Forests. Make sure you are dressed warmly because it is damp and cold. But the atmosphere there is special. You can do a lot of hikes, preferably with a guide.

Where to stay in the Cameron Highlands

Tanah Rata is the main entrance point in the Cameron Highlands, you can choose to stay central or spend the night somewhere in the hills (it is better to have your own transport). Some accommodations:

Father’s Guesthouse (€) – This guesthouse is in the center of town. It has cozy family rooms with private bathrooms and free Wi-Fi. There is also a garden.

Hotel Brynton (€€) – Also located in the center of Tanah Rata, private bathroom and TV.

Zenith Cameron (€€): Beautiful hotel with suites and a large beautiful garden, breakfast included. Sauna, restaurant, etc… world-class.

Best time to visit.

The climate in Malaysia is generally hot and humid throughout the year. Temperatures do not fluctuate much and stay in the 30s most of the day, dropping back to the mid to high 20s at night. This makes Malaysia a great place for swimming, snorkelling and relaxing in the sun.

Humidity is higher during the wet season and can be quite oppressive for those not used to it. The wet season changes from coast to coast. From November to April, the wet season hits the east coast of the peninsula and it is dry on the west coast. From May to October it's dry on the east coast and wet on the west.

Some people of Malaysia observe Ramadan. If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it is important to consider that some restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Malaysia is a modern melting pot – with Chinese, Indian, Malay, Eurasian and indigenous groups making up the population. With this cultural diversity comes a mix of religions, customs, foods and languages. Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism are the main religions practised, although most of the world’s religions are represented somewhere in Malaysia. The Muslim call to prayer, Hindu Festivals and Buddhist ceremonies all coexist with relative peace, with the South-East Asian concept of ‘saving face’ leading most people to strive for harmony.

Regardless of cultural background, elderly people and those of high rank (business people, government officials etc.) are respected greatly. Food plays an important part in daily life, with religious celebrations and holidays characterised by family gatherings and elaborately prepared feasts. Alcohol isn’t a large part of Malaysian society (probably due to the significant Muslim population) but is widely available for purchase and consumption.

Experience Malaysian culture for yourself on our 18day Ultimate Adventure.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food , savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world. Malaysia’s melting pot of cultural influences is evident in its cuisine.

Things to try in Malaysia

Delicious roti, chicken rice, spicy sambal eggplant and kopi peng (iced coffee).

2. Baba Nonya/Peranaken Cuisine

Fresh spring rolls, babi chin (stewed pork belly) and Mee Siam (rice noodles).

Aromatic curries, cool lassis, delicious daal and sweet fried coconut balls.

Hearty noodle broths, Peking duck pancakes and chrysanthemum tea.

Try some of Malaysia's most famous dishes on our 9day Borneo Family Holiday.

Geography and environment

Balmy beaches, fish-filled reefs, wild jungles, verdant highlands, relaxed ports, colourful cities and simple villages – Malaysia has it all. Sharing land borders with Brunei, Indonesia and Thailand , Malaysia’s environment is as diverse as its population. From the urban cityscape of Kuala Lumpur and the colonial charm of Penang, to the old-world streets of Melaka, a journey through Malaysia will reveal changing landscapes and evolving environments.

While the large cities are typically built-up, busy and full of buzz, Malaysia’s provincial towns and remote highlands remain delightfully relaxed, with people living simple lives based on agriculture, animal husbandry or other small enterprises. With such a rich range of environments, Malaysia offers beaches and islands for swimming, snorkelling and diving; jungles and highlands for trekking and adventuring; and villages and cities for exploration and relaxation.

Explore this country's breathtaking landscapes on our 8day Highlights of Malaysia tour.

History and government

Early history.

The first recorded historical mentions of Malaysia date back to 7th and 8th-century Sanskrit and Chinese texts. During the following centuries, Malaysia came under the influence and control of Indonesia, Thailand and India – with the accompanying religions, cuisines and languages spreading in the region. In the 16th century, Malaysia came under the influence of Portuguese and Dutch settlers, who increasingly expanded their reach throughout the region to create the Dutch East Indies. Under this influence, Malaysia did well in trade, and flourished as a result of the economic gains of being located on one of the most important trade routes of the time.

Recent history

During the 19th century, the British took control of the Malaysian Peninsula, with the Federated Malay States being officially formed in 1865. Malaysia remained under British rule until Japan invaded during World War II – but once Japan was defeated in 1945, British rule returned and the Federation of Malay was born in 1948. In 1963, the Federation of Malaya formed with Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah to create Malaysia.

Only two years after, Singapore became an independent state, leaving Malaysia in its current form. In the 1970s, Malaysia’s economy grew rapidly until the late 1990s, when the Asian Financial Crisis slowed economic growth in the region. The economy soon recovered, and Malaysia enjoyed the international exposure that came with hosting the 1998 Commonwealth Games (held in Kuala Lumpur). Currently, Malaysian standards of living continue to rise, and Kuala Lumpur has emerged as one of Asia’s premier cities.

Top 10 culinary experiences in Malaysia

1. baba nonya banquet.

The port town of Melaka is known for its unique Baba Nyonya style food. A fusion of Straits Chinese and Malaysian food (with hints of Portuguese, Thai and Indian), chowing down at a Nyonya restaurant is an elaborate affair filled with spicy flavours and tangy sauces.

2. Savour street eats

The streets of Malaysia are filled with locals pushing street carts selling everything from hand-made roti to fresh fruit, delicious satay and steaming bowls of laksa. Malaysian street food offers convenience, variety and flavour on a budget.

3. Taste some tea

Traditional tea is made a little differently in Malaysia. Order ‘teh tarik’ and watch as your condensed-milk tea is frothed and cooled by being poured dramatically between two metal cups, which are held metres apart.

4. Tuck into a hot curry

Beef Rendang is a Malay culinary favourite and is made at home, served at restaurants and prepared for special occasions. This spicy curry is packed with lemongrass, cinnamon, cloves, chilli and melt-in-your-mouth beef — an unforgettable fusion of flavours!

5. Seek out cool city eateries

The hip cafes and bars of Kuala Lumpur are a great place to mix with locals and connect with modern Asian culture. Head to the Jalan Bukit Bintang area in KL and check out the new-age teahouses, cool cafes and international dining options.

6. Down a luscious lassi

With a large Indian population, it’s not hard to find a refreshing Lassi when in Malaysia. Made from yoghurt and fresh fruit, sipping a cool Mango Lassi is the ideal antidote to a humid summer’s day.

7. Relish some rice

Chicken–rice is a favourite with locals and travellers alike. Available at small neighbourhood eateries, night markets and from street carts, this option is a great, low-cost meal for travellers on the go.

8. Slurp a bowl of laksa

Chicken, prawn, tofu and fish; there are many different varieties of spicy laksa to try while in Malaysia. Noodle types and ingredients may vary around the country - a good excuse to try laksa in every town you visit.

9. Chill out with a coconut

Quench your thirst with a fresh coconut juice. Sold at roadside stalls and on beaches, a straw is simply slipped into a stripped back coconut for a refreshing post-swim pick-me-up.

10. Feast on roti

No visit to Malaysia is complete without encountering roti. Walk down any busy street and the sight of people kneading roti dough at street stalls and shop windows will be common. Often served with lentils, potatoes, onions and rice, roti is an excellent option for vegetarians looking for a meat-free meal.

Malaysia has a shopping experience to suit travellers on all budgets. From dazzling, modern malls and exciting night markets to boutique speciality stores, the opportunity to buy something special is never far away.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Malaysia

1. Kuala Lumpur

The capital’s huge malls offer loads of variety and opportunities to shop. Shoes, bags and accessories are all great buys - from haute couture labels to chic chain-store fashions.

Home to a diverse range of artisans and craftsmen. Browse the markets, galleries and shops to pick up antiques, art and bespoke items. Handcrafted wooden ornaments, leather sandals, vibrant woven bags and antique coins are the best picks.

Boasts an eclectic mix of sleek malls, independent stores, interesting boutiques and open-air street markets. Head to Little India to source Indian-inspired saris, garlands and silver jewellery or stroll along Rope Walk to find one-of-a-kind antiques and treasures.

4. Langkawi

This island has duty-free status, making it a great place to buy fragrances, watches, cameras and other technology. For art lovers, the Craft Cultural Complex showcases locally made fabric, ceramics, baskets and jewellery.

Get shopping on our 20day Best of Borneo small group adventure.

Festivals and events

Kuala Lumpur’s Batu Caves light up in honour of the Hindi deity Subramaniam (also known as Lord Murugan). Pilgrims arrive after sunset and watch as brave individuals thread hooks and skewers through their bodies to carry decorative steel arches to the Gods. This is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before!

Malaysian Grand Prix

For a bit of high-octane fun, see the fastest cars in the world in action at the Malaysian Grand Prix, held near Kuala Lumpur each year.

Ramadan and Eid

Ramadan is observed by the Muslim population of Malaysia. During the ninth and holiest month in the Islamic calendar, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with three days of feasting and celebration.

What's the weather like in Malaysia?

Most of   Malaysia   has a tropical climate with hot, humid weather throughout the year. While the country experiences wet and dry seasons, the line between them is blurred and showers can occur at any time of year. The temperatures in Malaysia are steady, with averages of 23°C to 32°C along the coast and lowlands, and a cooler 14°C to 25°C in the highlands. It’s even colder at higher elevations like   Mt Kinabalu in Borneo , which can see sub-zero temperatures at the summit.

Is tipping customary in Malaysia?

Tipping isn’t expected in Malaysia. Some restaurants include a 10% service fee in bills. Feel free to leave a tip at restaurants or with taxi drivers if you’re feeling generous – it will be appreciated.

What is the internet access like in Malaysia?

The internet is easy to access in Malaysia’s large cities, with internet cafes and WiFi hot spots quite common, especially in tourist spots, hotels and hostels. Regional areas and rural communities might have little to no internet access, so be aware of this before heading out of the city.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Malaysia?

Mobile phone coverage is excellent in Malaysia’s large cities; however, it may be patchy in regional areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated on your phone before leaving home.

What to wear in Malaysia

Layering is the key to dressing for Malaysia — specifically long, loose, lightweight clothing as it's culturally respectful and will keep you cool in the tropical climate. A light fabric like linen is great for the heat as it absorbs moisture (read: sweat) and dries quickly. You might want to avoid cotton as it takes ages to dry — not ideal for places like  Borneo  where the humidity can be oppressive! Sportswear is also a good option for hot weather.

What are the toilets like in Malaysia?

Malaysian public toilets are a mix of western-style toilets and squat toilets. Up-market hotels and malls will usually have both options, whereas rural areas will almost certainly only have squat toilets. Be aware that soap and paper aren't always supplied, so be prepared and carry your own.

What will it cost for a…?

  • Hawker food snack = 7-25 MYR
  • Cup of teh tarik (tea) = 5-12 MYR
  • Beer in a bar or pub = 8.50 MYR
  • Souvenir t-shirt = 10-35 MYR

Can I drink the water in Malaysia?

It's not recommended to drink the tap water in Malaysia. Filtered water is a better option; try to use a refillable canteen or water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Remember to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Malaysia?

Credit cards are widely accepted by malls, hotels and large restaurants in Malaysia. Smaller guesthouses, shops and cafes may not accept credit cards, so ensure you have enough cash to cover purchases in smaller establishments.

What is ATM access like in Malaysia?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and towns but are far less common in rural and remote areas. Ensure you have enough cash before heading to isolated areas, as ATMs might be sparse.

What public holidays are celebrated in Malaysia?

  • 1 Jan: New Year's Day
  • 22 Jan: Chinese New Year
  • 1 Feb: Federal Territory Day
  • 21 Apr: Hari Raya Puasa (End of Ramadan)
  • 1 May: Labour Day

Taman Negara is quite far from Kuala Lumpur. This tour starts at 5:30am and takes 3.5 hours to reach the national park. You’ll visit the most famous attractions as part of this Taman Negara day tour Kuala Lumpur including the impressive Canopy Walkway.

You’ll take a hike to Teresek Hill, have lunch at a local floating restaurant, and go rapid shooting – a thrilling river cruise – where you’ll meet with a local Orang Asli tribe for a hunting demonstration.

This is quite a full on day and there’s a lot of variety and things to see on this Taman Negara day tour from Kuala Lumpur such as animals and local flora. The tour leaves Taman Negara for the drive back to Kuala Lumpur at 4:30pm. Note that shops are limited, so I recommend bringing snacks and breakfast with you for this day trip to Taman Negara from Kuala Lumpur.

Ipoh Private Day Trip

Streets of Ipoh

Ipoh is quite a long distance from Kuala Lumpur at 200 kilometres away, but it is possible to visit as part of a day trip out of KL. Ipoh is an interesting place to visit with pretty British colonial buildings as well as natural landmarks.

This private tour takes you on a one day trip away from KL to Ipoh where you can explore its colonial architecture, its famous food scene and many of its most significant sites dotted around the city – all in one day.

This Malaysia day trip from Kuala Lumpur visits local markets where your guide introduces you to the best known street foods like kaya puffs and hor hee fish cakes. You’ll visit the Perak Tong cave temple, Birch Memorial Clock Tower, Ipoh’s famous Railway Station, its Town Hall and more. You’ll also have a chance to sample Ipoh’s coffee which is respected around Malaysia for its high quality.

Your tour includes a private guide, all admission costs, transfers and breakfast, lunch and famous snacks. Considering this, and the 400 kilometre round trip, it’s a very good value one day road trip from KL.

Sunway Lagoon

Sunway Lagoon suspension bridge

Sunway Lagoon is Kuala Lumpur’s huge and awesome combined theme park and water park. It is one of the top places to visit in Kuala Lumpur in one day. With seven differently themed parks and tons of attractions, it is among the best places to cool off and enjoy a one day tour in Kuala Lumpur! There’s also an artificial beach here if you’re looking for a beach day trip from Kuala Lumpur.

Of course, the main attraction at Sunway Lagoon are the water slides. There’s a lot of variety including double and family options, both easy going and thrilling. Other activities include surfing, archery, go karting, bungee jumping, seeing animals and much more!

This tour is great value for a day trip in KL as it includes both transfers and entry tickets into the park. The tickets are discounted which means you end paying less money by booking in advanced. It also saves you the hassle of getting to and from the park as this Kuala Lumpur one day trip includes hotel transfers.

Kuala Selangor Fireflies Night Tour With Seafood Dinner – Best KL Selangor Day Trip

Bukit Melawati monkey and cannon

A popular choice of a one day trip in KL is a firefly tour. This one day trip near KL takes you to Kuala Selangor, just a one hour drive northwest of Kuala Lumpur where you can take a unique firefly night tour.

You can enjoy the morning in Kuala Lumpur as this 1 day trip in KL starts at 3:30pm. It first heads to Bukit Melawati. This is a historical fort built by the Melaka Sultanate where you can enjoy views from the hilltop, see the old fort, cannons and monkeys (and even possibly spot the rare silvered leaf monkey). On weekends, there is a tram service to the top of the hill. At other times, a 20 minute walking tour is included.

After this, you’ll head to Kuala Selangor at 6pm for dinner at a local seafood restaurant before departing on a night firefly tour on the Kuala Selangor River. These tours are both scenic and relaxing, and you’ll see one of the largest colonies of fireflies in the world. This 6.5 hour day trip at KL has you back at your hotel around 10pm.

There is quite a bit of variety on this KL one day tour and it could be a great family day trip from Kuala Lumpur.

Crab Island Sightseeing Boat Ride And Seafood Lunch

Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah

If you’re looking for places to visit in Kuala Lumpur in 1 day and have already seen the city centre, consider a Crab Island Tour. Crab Island is a fishing community with no paved roads on the island which makes this one of the more unique places to visit in KL in one day.

As part of this KL day trip itinerary, you’ll enjoy private transfers from your hotel, a boat ride from Port Klang to Crab Island and a fresh seafood lunch. This is one of the day tours from Kuala Lumpur where your guide is more of a driver, so it’s the perfect one day trip near Kuala Lumpur to explore alone.

There is plenty of time to do so, and it’s possible to hire a bike to get around on this 1 day trip in Kuala Lumpur. You can explore the island’s markets, mangrove forests and temples.

After catching the ferry back to Port Klang, your driver will stop at a few sites on the way to Kuala Lumpur including Istana Alam Shah Palace, Blue Mosque and Thean Hou Temple.

Final Words

We hope this guide has helped you choose your Kuala Lumpur 1 day tour! By far the hardest part is picking which of the day trips around Kuala Lumpur you want to do.
