Workers earning up to $58K a year could soon become eligible for overtime pay
Millions more Americans could become eligible for overtime pay.
The Biden-Harris administration announced a final rule Tuesday that raises the minimum salary threshold to qualify for time-and-a-half pay after 40 hours of work in a week.
Proponents say the new limit will mean lower-paid workers are fairly compensated for long hours, and business groups are expected to legally challenge it.
Here’s what to know:
The new salary limits
Starting July 1, 2024, people earning less than $43,888 per year, or $844 per week, would be eligible for overtime pay.
By Jan. 1, 2025, that salary threshold would increase to $58,656 per year, or $1,128 per week.
The rule also includes automatic increases to that salary eligibility level every three years, starting in 2027, to keep pace with the changing labor market and wages.
The current salary threshold to qualify for overtime pay is $35,568 per year based on a limit set by the Trump administration in 2019 — the first increase since 2004.
More money or time back to workers
Proponents say the new rule will ensure people, particularly in lower-paid roles, get paid for their time if they work longer than a traditional workweek.
“Too often, lower-paid salaried workers are doing the same job as their hourly counterparts but are spending more time away from their families for no additional pay,” Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su said in a press release.
It could also cause businesses to adjust their procedures so people work fewer overtime hours, giving employees more time back.
Who’s impacted
Overtime pay protections in the Fair Labor Standards Act say almost all hourly workers qualify for 1.5 times their pay after 40 hours worked in a week. The new Labor Department rule applies to salaried workers under a certain salary level.
The overtime boost is expected to impact 4.3 million workers , 56% of whom are women and 24% of whom are workers of color, according to the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute.

Most workers impacted are employed in professional and business services, health care and social services, and financial activities.
Roughly 15% of salaried workers are currently entitled to overtime pay, and that will roughly double under the new salary limits. However, it’s far lower than the 60% of salaried workers who were entitled to overtime pay in the 1970s, per the EPI.
Since then, the threshold has not kept pace with wage growth, experts say.
More worker protections on the way
Separately, the Federal Trade Commission issued a final rule Tuesday banning noncompetes , which proponents say will promote job-switching, higher wages, new businesses and innovation.
A noncompete agreement is a contract where an employee agrees to not join or launch a competitor after leaving a company. The FTC estimates 30 million, or 18%, of U.S. workers are currently subject to a noncompete.
The agency estimates the change will increase the average worker’s earnings by $524 per year, lower health-care costs by up to $194 billion over the next decade and lead to a 2.7% bump in startups, or roughly 8,500 new businesses per year.
The rule will become effective 120 days after being published in the Federal Register, though business groups are expected to challenge it.

’Don’t come out!' Viral video captures alligator paying visit to Florida neighborhood
It's alligator mating season, and gators are turning up everywhere in florida..
- Alligator mating season "officially" begins in May or June, but male alligators begin courting in early April
- Alligators may range up to several miles seeking mates and new habitats
A Florida woman was not terribly welcoming to her new neighbor: an alligator that was spotted wandering around her Fort Myers house and lurking under a car.
Siara Mercedes Grant told Storyful she got a heads-up about the new visitor on Thursday, April 18.
“I was cooking dinner when my neighbor called me to tell me there was an alligator outside of my house and to warn my husband, who would be coming home soon,” she said. "I opened the door to see where it was, and my husband yelled at me from the driveway, ’Don’t come out!’
Grant's husband videoed the gator, which she said was hiding under the neighbor's car before trying to knock open the door to another house.
“Then he started walking back to our house, so we ran inside before he did. Then he stayed outside our door for a while before he kept going on his merry way,” Grant said.
Professional alligator wranglers came the next day to remove the reptile.
Alligator season is coming in Florida
Gators are turning up everywhere as alligator mating season approaches, during which the gators that are chased out of their habitats by stronger ones wander around looking for new places to live and find mates. This month alone, alligators have been spotted in a Bonita Springs neighborhood , attacking a man walking his dogs in Naples , getting stuck in a kitchen in Venice , on a golf course and more.
What do I do if I see an alligator?
Do not attempt to capture an alligator yourself, and it's against the law to shoot at them . If you encounter an alligator you think will be a threat to people, pets or property, call the FWC’s Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 1‐866‐FWC‐GATOR (392‐4286) or visit myfwc.com .
The FWC’s Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP) uses contracted nuisance alligator trappers throughout the state to remove alligators 4 feet in length or greater that are believed to pose a threat.

Cincinnati Bengals Host Day Two Offensive Tackle Prospect For Visit Ahead of 2024 NFL Draft
The Bengals are eyeing offensive tackles early in the 2024 NFL Draft.
- Author: James Rapien
In this story:
CINCINNATI — The Bengals hosted Notre Dame offensive tackle Blake Fisher for a top 30 visit according to Matt Freeman of IrishSportsDaily.com.
Fisher is 54th on Daniel Jeremiah's big board, which means Cincinnati could target him in round two with the 49th overall selection. The Bengals have plenty of options in the first round and if they don't take an offensive tackle in round one , adding one in the second round would make a lot of sense.
Fisher also visited the Browns, Commanders, Eagles, Panthers, Patriots, Steelers and 49ers according to Freeman. It is worth noting that Fisher is only 21-years-old and is projected to be a third round pick by Dane Brugler of The Athletic.
For more on the Bengals' draft plans, check out our first round big board here .
Blake Fisher checking in at No. 54 isn't a huge surprise as he's gained momentum following the Combine/Pro Day. Fisher took 8 Top 30 visits over the last few weeks: Bengals, Browns, Commanders, Eagles, Panthers, Patriots, Steelers and 49ers. https://t.co/JI9m27fhAc — Matt Freeman (@mattfreemanISD) April 22, 2024
