Not a patch on 06? Or just a patch on 06?

There's a school of thought (founded and attended by me, in this paragraph, although I suspect others have enrolled in their own heads) that says we'd be better off if Electronic Arts adopted a subscription model for Tiger Woods. In a sense, it already has: each September, you pay a flat fee for a box of new toys, and the presence of old save-data gives you a small boost (in this case, a bonus per-hole for using a particular brand of golf-club). Tiger Woods 07 is hardly disguising the fact it's the same game as last year with a few upgrades - they've even put little "New!" icons next to things that have been introduced or altered.

In many ways, Tiger Woods 07 is the most complete Tiger to date, with every eventuality covered. If you're returning, you get a bonus. A range of tutorial videos allows you to learn everything from scratch, if needs be, or to simply pick out the "New!" bits. You can select between standard and alternative swing types for tee and approach shots (either using the left analogue stick for everything, or using the right analogue as a "Shape Stick" to bend your strokes) as well as putting (grid lines and "ideal putt" camera, or caddy tips telling you roughly where to aim on a naked green).

You can create a custom character to now spectacular levels of depth (although randomising usually builds you an unspeakably mole-ridden face). You can customise your swing. You can change your clothes. You can set the game up to skip all post-shot animations and proceed to the next one by pressing R1. You can play alone or build up a team, with four-player games online and off, and new game modes to service the size of your group. You can build a team of AI players.

pga tour 07 soundtrack

You can build in handicaps to challenge yourself (as in, ouch-my-leg-fell-off handicaps, rather than golfing ones - trying to win without hitting trees, starting with a shot deficit, etc.). You can play in "Real Time Events" - challenges that crop up depending on the actual day you're playing. You can play through a career mode, building up experience for your character, or take part in the PGA Tour. You can play on 21 courses, and while there's no Ryder Cup, you can always opt for the K Club and pretend. You can get really, really good and turn off all the shot assistance.

In short (and I bet you're gagging for that now), it has pretty much everything. And those things it doesn't have aren't the sorts of things it needs another manufacturing run to add. Why not make the first of the next-generation Tigers the last boxed run, and then hold off again until there's real change to be made?

Because otherwise, I'm going to give you 7/10s until my hands fall off.

The control and experience systems in Tiger Woods 07 propel you (and the ball) through the game as ever they have. Depending on your choice of shot type, you either pull the left stick back and push through to swing, angling it diagonally to add fade or draw; or you do the first part, and use the right stick to change the bend. During and after, you can hammer various shoulder buttons to add boost and spin. As before, you need to be quite dextrous, but it's forgiving enough that even a complete novice can juggle the various contortions to professional standard within a short space of time.

pga tour 07 soundtrack

You have all the usual readouts on the screen to help you select your club: advice on what percentage of the maximum strength you'll need to apply to reach the point you're aiming at, what direction the wind's heading and how fast, the relative height of the terrain you're shooting from and aiming for, and so on. On the green, you can either judge by the contours and pace-arrows, or aim for a spot dictated by the caddy (e.g. 11 inches left, 2 foot long). Play the game with all these assists on, as they are by default, and you'll be outscoring Tiger in no time. I got an eagle on the first hole I loaded up. Turn all this off, or play without due consideration, and things become trickier. And as ever, you gain experience points to spend on shot power, accuracy, striking, approach, spin, putting, recovery and luck, so even if you're only keeping pace with the world's best from the first tee, you'll be doing laps around him by the time you've put a dent in the sofa.

With "Rivals" mode abandoned, this year's "Team Tiger" stuff is a sort of single-player co-operative campaign. You unlock up to four team slots, pick bested adversaries to join you, and some tasks involve splitting the effort across the team, which obviously hinders experience dispersal. Get some friends around and you can of course toss the pad between each other and play actual co-op.

There's certainly a lot to do besides that if you've got pals over, mind, with new team-play modes and some suitable for two-player. Along with stroke- and match-play, speed golf and other traditional inclusions, there's elimination mode (after each hole, the loser is eliminated; last team standing wins), bloodsome and greensome (four-player games; four tee off, but only one ball for each team is played for the rest of the hole, with the difference being greensome has your team select your team's ball, while bloodsome lets the opposition), and one-ball (you and your opponent share a single ball, and the winner is the fellow who holes out). The former pair play out fairly inevitably, and entertainingly. Once your friends have gone home, you can opt for Skills 18 and other challenge-based modes if you're bored of the main campaigns.

pga tour 07 soundtrack

It's comprehensive then, but if anything it's a lesser game than Tiger Woods 06 was on current-gen formats, partly because Rivals mode took ages to play through and Team Tiger does not. With the exception of a couple of new multiplayer modes, most of the changes are superficial, and what's new is hit and miss. Caddy tips are generally easier to use than contours for putting, in my experience. Driving through the ball still feels weak and flimsy. And while there are lots of mini-challenges (like getting closest-to-the-pin) and the omnipresent Trophy Balls to try and collect (hole-in-one, eagle, longest-putt, etc.), Tiger Woods has never been all that hard to play, and working through the list of achievements you've already collected in past editions is laborious rather than invigorating.

As for the new modes, I did enjoy bloodsome, but elimination was a game my friends and I invented three years ago, and one-ball is a bit rubbish. The idea is that you have to play at least half the distance to the hole before your opponent takes over, and that failing that, or aiming for hazards, gives them two turns to try and hole out. But with hazards and tricky lies never that hard to escape in Tiger, and putting as the only real strategic element, you might as well be playing on the practice green.

There's little argument overall that Tiger Woods 07 is the best possible starting point for golf-game beginners (not least because EA will probably turn off the servers for Tiger Woods 06 a year sooner than they will these), but anybody who was getting a bit bored of the same formula last year will be even less impressed with this outing. It certainly looks nice, and Xbox 360 owners who avoided the weaker 360 version of 06 and waited for this ought to be relatively pleased (we'll take a look soon), but as I rolled around the K Club yesterday that just made me feel like grabbing the nearest squirrel and branding him with "New!" logo. Maybe a download or subscription model's a silly alternative (ask the Gran Turismo HD thread), but they ought to think of something, because the other alternative is just telling you not to buy it unless you're new, or really desperate.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 Review

  • First Released Oct 10, 2006 released

An improved aiming system, awesome create-a-character options, and top-notch gameplay help the Tiger Woods series get off to a great start on the PlayStation 3.

By Aaron Thomas on June 25, 2007 at 4:57PM PDT

Fresh off strong appearances on "last-gen" consoles and the Xbox 360, Tiger Woods makes his debut on the PlayStation 3. Anyone who has played the series on the PlayStation 2 will find that Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 on the PS3 plays quite a bit different than what you're used to, though the game is virtually identical to the Xbox 360 version--which is a good thing. The create-a-character is better than ever, the courses look great, and an all-new aiming system makes the game more challenging than ever. There's still room for improvement, but Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 is a great golf game that plays as good as it looks.

Creating your own golfer is still one of the game's highlights.

Now Playing: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 Video Review

There's certainly no shortage of ways to occupy yourself with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07. You can select from a number of different match and scoring modes, including stroke play, match play, skins, practice, stableford, alternate shot, best-ball, and four-ball. Battle golf is a twist on match play, where the goal is to win the most holes--as it always is in match play--but here you are able to remove a club from your opponent's bag after each hole you win. Needless to say, it's great fun to watch your rival tee off on a par five with a two-iron because you've taken all of his woods. Bloodsome and greensome matches are both team-based best-ball events. After you and your teammate hit your shots in greensome, you get to pick which ball you're going to play; in bloodsome, your opponent will choose which lie you'll use. One-ball is a new game where you and your opponent share the same ball and alternate shots. The strategy in one-ball lies in trying to set your opponent up with difficult shots so that you're the one left with a makeable putt. If you're the one who drains the putt, you win the hole. Before each shot, a large blue ring that represents the target area appears on the course. This is the area in which your shot must land, or else it's a "betrayal," and you'll lose a turn. For example, on a par four you may be able to put the ball on the green with your second shot, but that will leave your opponent with a putt--and that's not good. You can, however, shoot the ball into a sand trap that surrounds the green, thereby forcing your opponent to be the one who has to put the ball on the green. This play mode is great for learning how to recover from bad shots, but it can be frustrating to play against the tenacious CPU and is best played against another person.

Right off the bat you'll notice the improved presentation. As soon as the game loads the camera sweeps around a beautiful driving range, finally zooming in on Tiger, who's juggling a ball with his club, a la the Nike commercial from a few years back. From here you can immediately hit the range to practice or jump into a quick game, but you're encouraged to immediately create a golfer so that you may embark on a career. Tiger's unrivaled character creation mode makes it a breeze to create a male or female golfer in your spitting image, and you're limited only by your imagination when it comes to making zany, off-the-wall characters. You can also customize your player's swing, as well as their reactions.

Your created golfer has unlimited potential, but at first they stink. It's up to you to head to the training course to help them develop their skills. Each of your golfer's attributes--power, power boost, ball striking, driving accuracy, putting, recovery, approach, and spin--can be improved by completing short minigames. You can face other golfers in a longest-drive or putting contest, play quick, competitive rounds of T-I-G-E-R or 21, and race the clock in minigames that test your mettle with long irons and your shot-recovery skills. The number of minigames is impressive, but many of them are little more than slight variations of each other. After completing a challenge your individual attributes are raised, based on what skills the challenge focused on, as well as your performance. In an effort to keep people from training their golfer over and over before venturing out on the course, your attributes are now capped based on your experience. You'll need to actually go out and win some matches before you're able to go any higher than 25 percent in any skill category. This does work as the developer intended, slowing your progression through the game, but it's frustrating to have a skill artificially held back when you've already earned the points to raise it. Should your skills need a little boost, you can always pick up some new clubs or some jewelry for a small skill bonus. New equipment and clothing can be purchased in the pro shop, which, thanks to a new sorting option, is easy to browse.

You're going to spend lots of time on the training course.

The team tour mode from the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC versions is nowhere to be found; it has been replaced by the Tiger challenge. Here you'll take your created golfer up against fictitious golfers like Pops Masterson and Big Mo, PGA professionals, and, eventually, Tiger himself. It's understandable that EA wanted to show off new animation for each golfer, but the inability to skip your opponents' turns makes rounds last far too long. However, you can skip the CPU's pre- and post-shot routines once they've started, and you're able to fast-forward their shots once they're in the air. If your interests lie in more-traditional golf, the PGA Tour season, which now uses the FedEx points system to rank players for the PGA's new playoff format, offers up more of a challenge than ever before. You'll first need to train your golfer and then win a few matches in the Tiger challenge, or your golfer won't have a prayer against the punishing schedule of four-day tournaments. You can simulate rounds of a tournament and you don't have to enter every event, but it really would have been nice to have the option of setting how long you'd like tournaments to last.

Should you grow tired of playing solo, you can head online for a greater challenge. There are daily tournaments, ranked and unranked rounds of stroke and match play, as well as alternate game modes, such as best ball, battle golf, three-hole golf, skins, one-ball, four-ball, and alternate shot. Online play is just as smooth on the PS3 as it is on the Xbox 360. There's a small amount of ESPN integration, but it's limited to a ticker that runs across the bottom of the screen, short text news stories, and brief ESPN Radio SportsCenter updates every 20 minutes.

If you just want to stick to the pros, you can; there are 15 professional golfers (and a host of fictional golfers) in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07. The list includes the likes of Tiger Woods, Colin Montgomerie, Justin Leonard, John Daly, Jim Furyk, Mike Weir, Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh, and Rich Beem, among others. For the first time, LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam is a playable character. There are 12 courses--a respectable number, but underwhelming when compared to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions of the game, which have an impressive 21 courses. Joining favorites like TPC at Sawgrass and Pebble Beach are Firestone Country Club, Glen Abbey, the Prince Course at Kauai, Spyglass Hill, Bandon Dunes, and the vaunted Scottish course, St. Andrews. There's no course designer--still one of the series' most glaring omissions after all these years. You can put together your "dream course," using holes from any of the 12 courses in the game, but this doesn't make up for not having a true course editor.

The game looks great, and the presentation is much better this year as well.

Tiger 07's gameplay isn't vastly different than other games in the series, but there are a few changes that make the experience more challenging and enjoyable. Swinging your club uses the tried-and-true method of pulling down and then pushing up on the left analog stick. You can add a draw or a fade by moving the left analog stick down and then up at an angle during your swing. The right stick is used to change where you address the ball. You can hit under the ball to add loft and backspin to a shot, while striking the ball above the center gives your shot a lower trajectory with lots of topspin. A little extra oomph can be put on your shot by pressing L1 or the X button during your swing, and spin is added by pressing the same buttons and a directional while the ball is in flight. The Sixaxis' motion-sensing capabilities aren't put to the test here. You can add spin to the ball by holding L1 or X and rotating the controller in the direction you want the ball to spin. This method works just fine, but the game's not really any better for its inclusion. A new system called "true aiming" makes shot selection a less by-the-books affair by replacing the cursor that essentially pinpointed where your shot would land with a large circle that covers a much wider area. If you hit your shot just right, the ball should land somewhere in that circle. Should you miss, however, you're likely to end up in serious trouble. When using golfers with higher levels of skill, the circle doesn't come into play too often, but anyone playing with a new golfer will frequently find themselves questioning if the extra 10 yards of distance on a club is worth the increased size of the landing zone. You can still take huge risks--you're just more likely to pay for them now.

The standard control scheme for putting works much in the same way it did in previous years, with a few noticeable changes. You still use the left stick to putt, but you can now add a little extra speed by using the right stick to hit the top of the ball, adding topspin. Conversely, you can take some speed off of a putt by hitting it lower and adding some backspin. Both of these options come in handy for putts that are on either side of the putter's power level. An overlay is placed on the green, and you'll need to read the slope by how fast the white dots move along the grid. This is more important than ever because the ideal putt-cam that shows you the ideal putting line is gone--at least on the default difficulty level. It's still available on the easy setting, and you can turn it on in the game options. Veterans of the series shouldn't have much of a problem adjusting to life without the putt-cam. The basic system is very familiar and it's forgiving enough that you'll still be able to make long putts, except now you won't be making them on every hole.

There's no question that Tiger Woods 07 is an impressive-looking game. The created golfers look wonderful and have a host of unique animations to bring them to life. Each golfer has a unique swing, which makes them not only look different but also play different. The professional players generally look good, but there are a few that look pretty rough, and many of their animations are canned and repetitive. Tiger, of course, looks great, as do Annika and Vijay. John Daly doesn't look a whole lot like the real John Daly (perhaps this is a good thing), and Colin Montgomerie is downright scary. A picture-in-picture window shows player reactions in real time as the ball is in the air. This is entertaining for a bit, but most of the golfers don't react in any way that's worth watching more than a few times.

Courses also look better than ever, though like in the rest of the game, there's room for improvement. Vibrant colors, crisp visuals, and little touches, such as flocks of birds flying over the green or waves breaking along the shore, make each course beautiful. On the negative side, some shadows appear and disappear for no reason, green and fairway textures don't look so hot upon close inspection, and the rocks on the cliffs at Pebble Beach are last-gen quality at best. Though it never affects gameplay, the frame rate is a little unstable during some of the fly-bys that take place before each hole. Crowds line each hole and will track the ball as it's hit. You can even watch them run up and down the side of the fairway as they scramble for a better view. Unfortunately they don't make much of an effort to get out of the way of your ball. This is a big problem after a drive, where any chance you may have had of your ball rolling onto the fairway is routinely killed by a fan who's anchored to the ground. Occasionally this works in your favor, particularly around the greens when fans sacrifice their bodies and keep errant shots over the green from going too far away.

Annika makes a welcome first appearance in the Tiger Woods series.

Most of the audio in Tiger Woods 07 sounds good--or as good as can be expected from a golf game. The crowds are lively and react with enthusiasm to a great shot. David Feherty and Gary McCord are back and seemingly have nothing new to say. The commentary plays it too straight in a game that's otherwise full of personality. Their negative comments appear to have been toned down a bit, but the duo still drinks "Haterade" and just loves to rub it in after a poor shot. For the most part their observations are accurate, though they'll occasionally praise you for hitting the ball in the rough and chastise you for what ends up being a perfectly good shot. Should you choose to forgo the announcers, there are lots of ambient noises to listen to instead. You'll hear birds chirping, planes flying overhead, and, on Pebble Beach, the sea crashing into the cliffs.

A few people may lament the series' shift toward realism, but almost universally, the changes and additions serve to make Tiger Woods 07 on the PlayStation 3 (and the Xbox 360) the best game in the series. The courses are beautiful, the golfers look better than ever, and of course, the create-a-character is second-to-none. But there are a few things that could have been better. Twelve courses is still on the low side of what one would expect from a Tiger Woods game, a lot of the different modes and minigames feel the same, and with many of the graphics being outstanding, the ones that aren't so great are more noticeable. That said, it's an excellent game, and if you're searching for a great round of video game golf, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 is what you're looking for.

  • Leave Blank
  • Plenty of great-looking fictional and licensed golfers
  • Best create-a-character around
  • True aim system adds a new level of challenge
  • Has nine fewer courses than the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions
  • Not enough variety in the training challenges
  • David Feherty and Gary McCord have worn out their welcome

EA Trax is used in many EA Sports games since the 2002-03 release of the game

A game that uses EA Trax has songs from various genres that depend on the game (eg. Hip Hop/Rap songs for NBA Live and Madden NFL 18-onwards), or rock music for NHL series, or indie/world music for FIFA series, EDM for F1 (after EA acquired Codemasters) and a mixed soundtrack genre for Need for Speed games. Previously, Madden NFL also had rock music until the soundtracks focused on hip hop/rap since Madden NFL 18 .

Billy Horschel goes to Dominican Republic. He returns a PGA Tour winner again

  • Copy Link copied

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic (AP) — Billy Horschel went to the Dominican Republic for the first time in search of momentum and came away with a PGA Tour victory he sorely needed Sunday.

Horschel ran off four straight birdies on the front nine to get in the mix, began to pull away with an eagle on the par-5 12th hole and closed with a 9-under 63 for a two-shot victory in the Corales Puntacana Championship.

“This game of golf is so fickle,” Horschel said. “You can put a lot into it and not get everything you want out of it. I knew ... I had the ability, I had the talent. I had to continue to believe the good stuff was going to come to the forefront.”

Horschel, who started the final round three shots behind, all but sealed it with an 18-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.

Wesley Bryan, trying to go wire-to-wire, was bogey-free with four birdies and still only one shot behind late in the round. But right after Horschel made his final birdie, Bryan missed a par par putt from just outside 2 feet and fell three behind.

Bryan birdied the 18th for a 68 and was runner-up, which will get him into the AT&T Byron Nelson in two weeks. He was playing on a sponsor exemption. Kevin Tway shot 69 and finished third.

Horschel finished at 23-under 265 and earned $720,000.

He won for the eighth time on the PGA Tour and the first time in nearly two years. This gets him into the PGA Championship next month, and he likely will be in the next $20 million signature event at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Those are the tournaments Horschel, a former FedEx Cup champion, was used to playing. The opposite-field events are seen as a chance for younger players to get their first win. In the case of Horschel, it was crucial to get some confidence back.

He delivered one of his best closing rounds when he needed it — the four straight birdies starting on the par-3 second hole, a 31 on the front nine, the eagle on No. 12 to seize control and no bogeys over the last 30 holes of the tournament.

It was nearly a year ago at the Memorial that Horschel, the defending champion at Muirfield Village, shot 84 and was near tears talking about how low his confidence had fallen. He missed the FedEx Cup playoffs for the first time since 2012.

He had shown signs this year with a pair of top 10s, and now has a victory for validation. Along with getting into the PGA Championship at Valhalla, he is assured of starting next year at Kapalua in The Sentry.

Norman sees Adelaide success as blueprint for all LIV Golf events

Adelaide (Australia) (AFP) – Entertainment, star names and awareness of culture are the three key ingredients Greg Norman has used to build LIV Golf, with the Australian confident the formula can be transplanted anywhere to capitalise on pent-up demand.

Issued on: 25/04/2024 - 07:21

Now in its second full season, spanning 14 tournaments, the Saudi-backed league and its 54-hole format, punctuated by thumping music, has injected itself as a rival to the PGA Tour, poaching a slew of high-profile talent.

Its fledgling success is nowhere more evident than in Norman's homeland, with fans flocking to the tour's Adelaide stop last year and capacity expanded at this week's event to cater for demand.

"This event here, from last to this year, is the benchmark for LIV," said Norman.

"We get all the other events, 13 events around the world to take a look at what we've delivered here and what Adelaide has delivered and what the state government has delivered and what the local community and the region has delivered, and you go, it can be done. Here it is."

South Australia state premier Peter Malinauskas took a gamble on agreeing to host the tournament in the face of blowback over concern about Saudi Arabia's human rights record.

But the risk paid off, with Adelaide named the world's best golf event of 2023 by the World Golf Awards, which are part of the World Travel Awards.

"We always took a calculated risk as a government that Australian golf fans had been starved of high-quality professional golf for decades ... and they responded in droves," he said.

"What I think will take this event to another level this year is that there are a lot more people here. We've increased the capacity of the facilities here at Grange (Golf Club)."

Norman believes the LIV formula in Adelaide, with an interactive fan village, pop-up food options, golf-focused entertainment and live music at the end of the day, can be taken anywhere, particularly markets deprived of elite golf such as Australia.

"Every market is different because we've got to look at the different cultures that we work with," he said.

"But when you look at the three specific things, you have entertainment and you have golf and you have culture.

"So if you take those three ingredients everywhere you go in the world, you'll be able to figure out the right way to inject a LIV event somewhere."

'Quality golf'

Marc Leishman, part of the all-Australian "Ripper" team, sees unlimited opportunities, with the potential for each of the 13 LIV teams to host a "home" tournament.

"There's opportunities all around the world, markets that haven't been hit yet like Adelaide hadn't been," he said.

"You've got Torque (team) -- there's an opportunity for a tournament in Chile, the South African lads I'm sure would love to have one in South Africa, you've got all of Asia and India.

"There's just so many opportunities, places that haven't seen world-class golf for a long time."

Fellow Australian and former major winner Cameron Smith added: "I'm definitely putting my hand up for more of an international schedule and getting fans out that haven't seen quality golf for a while and showing them what LIV is all about."

Norman is already planning LIV's 2025 and 2026 schedules, despite uncertainty around what the global golf calendar may look like.

A framework merger agreement between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) -- LIV Golf's financial backers -- was unveiled last June to controversy.

Talks have since been extended about a deal to bring all sides together in a partnership, but no outcome is in sight.

"I would love to give you insight but I don't have any," said Norman.

"I really don't want to know what's going on over there because we are so fixated on growing and developing and building out what LIV is today and looking and doing our schedule for 2025 and going into 2026.

"Our responsibility is to look after our people, our players, and where we want to go."

Wesley Bryan would rather be at Hilton Head. He's leading in the Dominican Republic

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic. — Wesley Bryan chipped in for eagle early and for birdie late, giving him a 9-under 63 on Thursday for a three-shot lead in the Corales Puntacana Championship, a PGA Tour event held the same week as a place he’d rather be.

Bryan birdied his last two holes to stretch his lead to three shots over five players, a group that includes former PGA Tour winners Charley Hoffman and Troy Merritt, along with tour rookie Parker Coody.

The tournament is held opposite the RBC Heritage, site of Bryan’s only PGA Tour victory. The South Carolina native even took part in Harbour Town’s promotional day last month.

But with injuries to his left shoulder and his wrist, his game has suffered and Bryan has spent more time delivering YouTube content with his brother, George . They first gained fame with their trick shots .

There was nothing tricky about his 63, outside of the chip-in for eagle on the par-5 fourth on the Corales course at Puntacana Resort & Club, and his chip-in for birdie on the par-3 17th. Bryan also birdied the 18th.

His 63 matched his low round on the PGA Tour. Bryan also shot 63 in the third round of the Genesis Open at Riviera in 2017.

“Got off to a good start, which was nice,” Bryan said. “But I mean, I’ve been hitting it nice leading up to this week. It’s fun to actually go out there and make some birdies, and had a couple chip-ins, which was nice as well.”

Hoffman is 47 and already had a surprise start to his year with a playoff loss in the Phoenix Open. He’s trying to build on that and added a trip to the Dominican Republic.

He started on the back nine, played bogey-free on a breezy day and finished with three straight birdies.

As an opposite-field event, the winner gets into the PGA Championship and receives a two-year exemption, which more than makes up for not getting a spot in the Masters.

“This year every event means a ton,” Hoffman said. “Everyone knows how important is it to get in that top 50, top 70 to get in the playoffs. I got off to a good start this year, struggled a little bit — I didn’t struggle, just missed a couple cuts by a few shots.

“Late in my career every event means a ton and obviously trying to get a W is the most important thing this week, and then obviously put myself in position for the playoffs.”

The group at 67 included Billy Horschel and Pierceson Coody, the twin brother of Parker. Their grandfather is Charles Coody, the 1971 Masters champion.

The RBC Heritage at Harbour Town is known for being a big exhale from the Masters. Perhaps the Dominican Republic had some of that vibe for Nicolai Hojgaard, though his scorecard looked like he was going through an emotional hangover — five birdies, six bogeys, seven pars for a 1-over 73.

Hojgaard, a 23-year-old from Denmark, briefly had the lead on Saturday at the Masters until making five straight bogeys. He wound up in a tie for 16th.

Hojgaard is the only Masters participant playing at Puntacana.
