More than 1.7 million people make their way to Willis Tower's Skydeck Chicago each year, and it's easy to see why. Occupying the 103rd floor – that's nine floors higher than 360 CHICAGO – of the 110-story Willis Tower (the third-tallest building in North America after One World Trade Center and Central Park Tower), Skydeck Chicago boasts breathtaking views of the city. Visit on a sunny day and you may be able to see far beyond Chicago's borders to Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and other parts of Illinois.

The highlight for most visitors is the Ledge. Extending 4.3 feet beyond the building's exterior, this platform is made entirely of glass – even the floor. Travelers also liked the video screens that show what it would be like to stand 103 floors above other Chicago attractions, including Wrigley Field and Millennium Park . However, long lines quickly form for Skydeck Chicago, so plan on arriving early or purchasing a Chicago CityPASS, which covers expedited admission into the attraction. Or, simply pay extra for expedited entry, which features an express line to the elevators. For the best views, it's advised that you visit just after opening or after sunset. If you'd like to enjoy the sunset from the tower, plan on arriving 30 to 45 minutes before sunset to ensure you have enough time to get through the elevator line and up to the top.

Willis Tower and its Skydeck sit above South Wacker Drive on the western edge of the Loop. You'll find the Quincy/Wells L station nearby, as well as several bus stops and a parking garage. The Skydeck is open daily March through September between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. on weekdays and 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. From October through February, it's open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and until 10 p.m. on weekends. General admission starts at $32 for adults and $24 for children ages 3 to 11, while expedited entry starts at $55 per person. Kids 2 and younger can enter for free. Timed tickets are required and advance purchase is recommended. Standard entry fees are covered by Go City Chicago Cards. Restaurants, shops and restrooms can be found inside Willis Tower. Check out Skydeck Chicago's website for more information about the attraction.

#1 Millennium Park and Cloud Gate

U.S. News Insider Tip: Construction around the Cloud Gate sculpture will limit the public's access to this top tourist attraction until spring 2024. While you might not be able to snag a selfie with "The Bean," many other attractions are available within the park. – Cortney Fries

A first-time visit to Chicago isn't complete without a stop at Millennium Park. Situated in the Loop just north of the Art Institute of Chicago , this 25-acre space is used to showcase cutting-edge art, architecture and landscaping; it also acts as a backdrop for concerts and festivals. Most visitors come to Millennium Park to see the Crown Fountain and Cloud Gate, better known as "The Bean." Designed by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, the Crown Fountain features two 50-foot towers that face each other at opposite ends of a shallow reflecting pool. The towers' LED screens project the faces of 1,000 different Chicago residents, which are perfectly aligned with spouts so that it appears they are spitting water on passersby. The water flows mid-spring through mid-fall, while the faces are projected year-round. Cloud Gate – created by British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor – is a 110-ton bean-shaped sculpture forged from stainless steel. The Bean's elliptical shape reflects the Chicago skyline. A quintessential Chicago souvenir is a photo of your reflection in The Bean.

Skydeck Chicago – Willis Tower

Skydeck Chicago History and Background

Skydeck Chicago occupies the 103 rd floor of Chicago’s iconic Willis Tower. When the construction of Willis Tower (which was then known as Sears Tower) was completed in 1973, the building was the tallest building in the entire world. Willis Tower would retain this distinction for the next 25 years, becoming one of the most famous structures anywhere in the world. Willis Tower stands some 1,450 feet tall—approximately 1,730 feet tall if you include its distinctive antenna towers. This height is significant enough that even today it remains the second-tallest building in the whole Western Hemisphere.

Skydeck Chicago has itself been a part of the Willis Tower experience ever since 1974. In a typical year, nearly 1.7 million visitors flock to Skydeck Chicago. It’s said that, on a clear day, from Skydeck you can see over 50 miles in any direction, and even get a glimpse of four different states!

What’s at the Skydeck Chicago

Guests to Skydeck Chicago will enjoy a variety of features throughout this popular facility, but perhaps nothing so much as the stellar views on display. Skydeck Chicago is acclaimed for the unique perspective it provides visitors. No matter how well you think you know the city of Chicago—whether you’re brand-new to town or you’ve lived there your whole life—you’re bound to be left breathless when taking in the Windy City from this height.

The Ledge is one of the most recent exciting innovations to be found at Skydeck Chicago. The Ledge is an enclosed glass box that extends nearly five feet out from the Skydeck over the Chicago River and Wacker drive. From this incredible vantagepoint you’ll be able to experience Skydeck Chicago’s 103 rd floor location like never before; it’s a can’t-miss photo opportunity for sure.

Even as you’re soaking in the remarkable range of views on display at Skydeck Chicago, you’ll want to take time to check out its additional features. In the Skydeck Theater you can catch a showing of Reaching for the Sky . This nine-minute film covers some of Chicago’s rich architectural history, and discusses the planning, constructing, and legacy of Willis Tower. A gallery of interactive displays and exhibits is also worth checking out; with fun facts and trivia about Chicago, Willis Tower, and a number of the world’s other tallest skyscrapers, you’re sure to learn something new while having a good time!

Multiple dining options are available near the exit/entrance to Skydeck Chicago at ground level. There you’ll find a coffee shop, bagel shop, and a couple different restaurants that serve up a variety of snacks and lunches. These establishments, however, are typically only open Monday through Friday, so if you’re visiting Skydeck Chicago on a weekend you’ll need to plan to make other arrangements.

Tips for Visiting the Skydeck Chicago

  • A great way to save money is to buy a Tourist Pass . Go Chicago Card, a Chicago CityPASS or a Chicago Explorer Pass . With each you get to skip the ticket line though there are several other lines that you will still have to wait out.
  • Skydeck Chicago’s hours vary depending on the time of year and the day of the week. For specific details, check their website in advance of your visit—and remember that last admission to the attraction is 30 minutes before the posted closing time.
  • Admission for children under the age of 3 years old is free.
  • In order to snap the best possible picture of you and/or your group standing in front of one of the windows at the top of Willis Tower, the friendly staff at Skydeck Chicago recommends using the “backlight function” on your camera. It’s also a good idea to shut off your camera’s flash, and turn on a polarizer filter.
  • All of Skydeck Chicago’s offerings are accessible, including The Ledge. There are also a number of wheelchairs available for complimentary use during your visit.
  • Given Skydeck Chicago’s immense popularity, it is frequently quite busy and crowded. For that reason, if you want a more private visiting experience, it is recommended you either arrive at the attraction in the morning just prior to its opening time, or much later in the evening.

The 10 Best Places to Watch the Sunset in Chicago

By: Author Amar Hussain

The 10 Best Places to Watch the Sunset in Chicago

The Windy City is known for a lot of things, from culture to sports. However, this Midwest metropolis should also be known for its gorgeous sunsets.

To make sure you get the best view possible of your Chicago sunset, here are the top viewpoints to head to.

Quick Links

1. Promontory Point

2. 360 chicago, 3. cindy’s, 4. the j. parker, 5. lake michigan, 6. skydeck chicago, 7. navy pier, 8. adler planetarium, 9. the signature room at the 95th, 10. lakefront trail, the best places to watch the sunset in chicago.

If you’re looking for a nice outdoor spot to catch a glimpse of the setting Chicago sun, head to Promontory Point in Burnham Park.

The area overlooks Lake Michigan, so you get the extra advantage of seeing the breathtaking view of the sun’s rays glittering on the water’s surface.

Originally the area was a landfill that was cleaned up and filled in to make this little observation area. The best part is that it’s not well-known among tourists. You’ll feel like a local and get most of the area all to yourself.

360 Chicago is one of the most famous observation decks in the city, however, it still deserves its spot on this list. After all, it offers views from 1000 feet up in the air on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Building .

However, during the evening hours, a lot of Chicago tourists are busy at other spots around the city. That means you likely won’t have to share the deck with too many other people.

Since this spot involves being so high up, if you’re afraid of heights, you might want to skip this one.

Cindy’s, also known as Cindy’s Rooftop, is the place to be if you want to enjoy some drinks and food along with your sunset viewing.

The venue is located on the roof of the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel and offers coverage so you can enjoy your visit even during cold Illinois winters.

Cindy’s isn’t exactly under the radar, however, you’ll usually encounter more locals here than tourists. So, it’s the perfect spot to sit back, enjoy a cocktail, and feel like a true Chicago native while watching the sunset.

Chicago is known for its glamorous side. So, if you’re looking for a classy place to take in the sunset, head to The J. Parker rooftop lounge.

Located at the very top of the Hotel Lincoln, this restaurant and lounge offers a swanky vibe that will make you feel like a VIP without paying a fortune first.

The roof and walls are made of glass, so you get a flawless view of the sunset all year. You also don’t have to fight too many crowds as there’s limited space for guests.

No list of places to see the Chicago sunset would be complete without mentioning Lake Michigan.

While it’s true that a few of our entries are located along its banks, you can’t go wrong anywhere on the Michigan lake waterfront.

The lake is a huge part of the Chicago landscape, so you have plenty of options if you’re scoping out a place to watch the sunset.

You might run into a few locals, but most tourists don’t know about this little secret. So, you can make all your friends jealous with your insider knowledge.

No trip to Chicago would be complete without a visit to the Willis Tower. Just don’t let locals hear you call it that, it’s the Sears Tower to them!

The 103rd floor of the former tallest building in the world is where you’ll find Skydeck Chicago.

Most people visit Skydeck during the daytime hours to get a far and wide view of the Chicagoland area.

However, for a truly memorable experience, go a little before dusk so you can catch the sunset from one of the floor’s glass observation boxes.

Navy Pier is Chicago’s favorite treasure spot. Home to rides, restaurants, and eclectic shops, you can easily spend all day in this corner of the city.

However, you might not realize that the pier offers some of the best views in the city.

Located on Lake Michigan, you can get unobstructed views of the sun setting on the water from virtually anywhere on the pier.

For a really spectacular viewing experience, try to snag a seat on the Centennial Wheel. If you’re lucky, you might be at the very top during the sunset.

The Adler Planetarium should already be on your to-visit list if you’re interested in space and astronomy. So, it’s fitting that it also be one of the best places to watch the sunset in Chicago.

The planetarium is on a bit of a hill, so you just have to stand outside to be treated to a brilliantly colored sky at dusk.

Though it’s a famous museum when it comes to visitors, it often loses out to other exhibits, so you don’t have to fight for a good place to watch the sunset.

If you want an upscale sunset viewing experience while in Chicago, you can’t miss checking out The Signature Room at the 95th.

This restaurant sits on the top floor of one of the city’s fanciest buildings and offers guests remarkable views all day.

However, for the most magical viewing experience, make reservations for just before dusk and ask for a window seat so you can see the sun setting while you enjoy your meal.

You can also try your luck seeing the sunset from the restaurant’s lounge, but that’s a bit more unpredictable.

Lakefront Trail is an 18.5-mile stretch along Lake Michigan that’s a favorite spot for joggers, bikers, and those going for a casual walk in the park.

While it’s not uncommon to run into tourists and locals during the day, often people start to clear out around dusk to head home.

However, that’s when you should scope out a nice spot to relax for a while because the trail offers fantastic views of the sun setting over the lake.

However, remember, you’re in Chicago. So, if you visit in the winter, bundle up.

Did you ever imagine seeing planes in flight up close? Well from the Skydeck you can. On the west, you can find the air traffic from Chicago’s O’Hare International airport and they do not at all seem so far away. You can also spot Oprah’s Harpo Studios Building, Little Italy and Greek town as well as the famous United Center. What about the sunset? Well, that too. The true attraction of this site is the spectacular sunsets when you visit the deck at the right time. Also, West is also the direction that has the four glass boxes of the Ledge.

If you need to take a break from the spectacular views, visit the restrooms or collect a souvenir at the gift store at this level.

The Skydeck witnesses over 1.7 million visitors every year. The Ledge is the main attraction. So, what is The Ledge? On the west side of the deck, you can see four glass boxes. Inspiration for these boxes came from the number of forehead prints on the Skydeck window. The original Ledge opened long back. But the new improved The Ledge opened in the year 2009. This Ledge gives you an uninterrupted view of the city right below, straight down to the streets. Is it safe? Strong enough? Rest assured. The glass boxes are made with three layers of half-inch thickness toughened glass that is laminated together. These boxes can hold up to 10,000 pounds and can also tolerate the pressure of 4 tons. They also are retractable into the building to facilitate easy cleaning.

Be prepared for a long queue to see The Ledge in the summer months and during busy hours. If you are visiting during sunset time, it is highly unlikely to have the boxes to yourself. But you can surely take a picture of yourself at these magnificent boxes. The friendly staff here can even take your picture. There is also an “official” photo box that is less chaotic than the rest. This one is furthest to your left as you enter. The box has lighting for nighttime pictures and even has a Canon Camera mounted on its ceiling for the official pictures with perfect backdrop scene. These can be purchased at the Skydeck desk.

Is someone in your group celebrating a special day? Do you want to make you go down on one knee extra special? The Willis Tower Skydeck has that covered! Most crowd flocks in the windy city in the summer months. But if you are looking for clear sky and pristine weather, the best time to visit the Willis Tower and the city, in general, is during the spring and fall season. You will enjoy clear weather and fabulous view during this time.
