Get ready to enjoy a cruise on the River Tay

The starting date for the 2019 season of boat trips on the River Tay has been revealed.

From 16 May to September local people and visitors are being encouraged to discover the wildlife and sights of the River Tay with a range of fantastic boat trips.

Trips include a return sailing from Broughty Ferry Harbour to Perth allowing approximately two hours in Perth city centre to enjoy something to eat and drink, sightsee or just enjoy a walk before the return journey from the pontoon near the Fergusson Gallery.

The second option is a trip departing from Willowgate Activity Centre offering views of Elcho Castle and Kinnoull Hill, from the river.

Upon return to Willowgate Activity Centre visitors are encouraged to visit their facilities to try out an activity or some of the home made cakes at their café.

Now in its third year, the boat trips are the result of collaboration between Perth & Kinross Council and the Tay & Earn Trust, designed to promote the regeneration and use of the city’s key waterway from two seasonal pontoons, one located near the Fergusson Gallery in Perth city centre and the other at Willowgate Activity Centre, 15 minutes down river.

Booking is now open for trips from 16 May to 15 September.

Trip options and booking details can be found at  perthcity.co.uk/boating-on-the-ta y .

It is also possible to book in person at Willowgate Activity Centre. For more details about Willowgate Activity Centre visit willowgateactivitycentre.co.uk .

Depending on the choice of trip, prices start at £25 per adult for a 50 minute return trip. Under 3s go free and concessions are available. Due to the tidal nature of the river, the trips will run at different times.

This provides ample choices to explore the beautiful river first thing in the morning, during the day or into the early evening.

The programme of boat trips offers a great opportunity for tourists and residents to view the city from a different perspective whilst showcasing the potential of the river to commercial operators.

Convener of Environment & Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Angus Forbes said: ‘It is exciting to see the Tay boat trips return for the third year in a row. The trips have proved to be a success among both locals and visitors to the area and we expect this year’s season to be even more successful.

‘Offering boat trips on the river is a fantastic way to attract visitors to the area to experience the wonderful views of the city and its surrounding landscape from a different perspective.’

Perth & Kinross Council and the Tay & Earn Trust are working in partnership with David Anderson Marine who provides the Broughty Ferry Trips and TayMaritime Action (Taymara) who provide the Perth trips.

He said: ‘We are delighted to have the support of their qualified crews and vessels to safely provide wonderful experiences for everyone that books a boat trip on the River Tay.’

Simon Clarke, chairman of the Tay & Earn Trust said: ‘The Trust is proud to work together with Perth and Kinross Council to bring our two types of river trips to the public once again this year.

‘It is our hope that the river journeys allow locals and visitors alike to gain unique experiences by discovering the nature and wildlife in and around the River Taythrough our fun and educational trips.

‘We encourage travelers to bring a picnic on the journey and sit back and enjoy the commentary of the knowledgeable crew about the river and surroundings.

‘In addition to the fantastic views and sounds from the river, travelers may also be lucky enough to see some of the river’s wildlife like ospreys, seals and otters.’

Setting sail from Broughty Ferry to Perth City Centre

Samantha paton.

river tay boat trips perth

Boat life is the best life! Boating on Tay is back for summer 2019 with regular boat trips scheduled along the Silvery Tay running from May until September. This year you have the option of two fantastic trips to choose from. If you fancy a short jaunt along the River Tay the leisure trip is the one for you, running for 50 mins starting and leaving at the Willowgate Activity Centre. The second option is for the thrill seekers and is a full day adventure from Broughty Ferry to Perth and back with enough exploring time in between.

Being the resident Dundonian in the Small City office I had the pleasure of packing up my husband and two year old son aptly named “River” and setting sail along the banks of the River Tay on the Broughty Ferry to Perth trip. The trip lasts approximately five hours and I can confirm it’s a fantastic way to spend the day, rain or shine!  I can confirm it’s an absolutely fantastic way to spend the day, rain or shine!

Our trip set off at 12.45pm on a rather dreich Sunday. The vessel comfortably holds 12 people and we were joined by another two couples who had booked for a fun day set sail on the Tay.

After being togged out in our life jackets we climbed aboard the "Terra Nova" ready for our adventure to begin. The boat has seats with seatbelts allowing kiddies and adults to be safely strapped in or if you prefer the thrill of the open water you can choose to sit at the rear of the boat in a padded seating area where you can sit and enjoy the views of Perth and beyond.

Our crew for the day were captain and skipper Belinda and Norman Chalmers. The husband and wife team had great enthusiasm and passionately told us tales of the River Tay, delving into the local history of the landmarks that sit along the riverbank. It was fantastic to be led by such a knowledgeable crew who made sure everyone was relaxed and had a brilliant time.

It was clear that both Belinda and Norman love their job taking tourists out to explore the river and it was captivating hearing the stories and historical facts of Scotland’s castles, Lords, Ladies It was captivating hearing the stories and historical facts of Scotland’s castles, Lords and Ladies  and even its bridges! Who knew that Perth Railway Bridge was originally made from wood in 1849 and opened sideways?! I certainly didn’t!

It was fascinating to see our local landmarks that we almost take for granted in a completely new light. I make the commute from Dundee to Perth twice a week and have never noticed the figure of the “bear and the ragged staff” which is cut into the scenic hillside on Park Hill, southeast of Lindores Abbey right next to Newburgh. It’s constructed from a shallow trench where the vegetation is regularly removed and can sometimes be seen lit up by fairy lights. Next time I make the journey home I will glance over at the hill to see if I can spot it again.

Boating on Tay Review 2019 V&A

The journey to Perth takes around 1hr 50 mins with a stop at the V&A Dundee where you can take in the impressive architecture by Kengo Kuma who was inspired by Scotland’s natural landscape. As the boat sales off towards Perth you can glance back and see how the V&A has been built to take the shape of a large ship when looked at from certain angles.

The boat slows as it passes Willowgate Activity Centre which was bustling with people engaging in fun activities. My toddler River enjoyed waving at every single person who was out on a kayak, thankfully they all enthusiastically waved back which made his day. We continued our journey past Newburgh and into Perthshire taking in the impressive picturesque scenery and spotting swans and even ospreys nestling along the shore line.

Boating on Tay Review 2019 South Inch Pavilion

Once we arrived at Fergusson Pontoon which is only a hop, skip and jump from the city centre we were instructed to be back at the boat in one hour and forty five minutes. The challenge had been set! How many sites of Perth could we squeeze into the time frame. We walked across to The Fergusson Gallery and had 15 minutes of taking in the splendid gallery which is full of the work of influential artist JD Fergusson and his lifelong companion Margret Morris.

I had a very hungry two year old in tow so strolled accross to the newly reopened South Inch Pavillion which looks over the fantastic play park at the South Inch. The pavilion boasts a vast menu with healthy options which were really tasty and inexpensive. Lunch for three with coffee and juice was under £15!

Once refuelled we still had enough time for River to burn off some energy and run around the playpark where he insistently told everyone that he had just been on a “really big boat”. After telling all the mums, dads, granny and grandads that were chaperoning their little ones about our fabulous boat journey we went back to the pontoon to continue our journey home.

Boating on Tay 2019 Review 10

River was delighted to be given the captains hat and posed for some cute snaps alongside the boat. My husband Richard who is an even bigger kid was pleased when Norman asked if he wanted to have a shot driving the boat under supervision. Thanks Norman – I think you have made my family's year!

I would highly recommend this trip for all age groups. Our boat trip ranged from age two to late seventies and everyone had a brilliant time, ending the day with big smiles on our faces and thanking the excellent crew. We will 100% be back again for another trip this summer.

The Tay originates in western Scotland on the slopes of Ben Lui, then flows easterly across the Highlands, through Loch Dochart, Loch Iubhair and Loch Tay, then continues east through, in the centre of Scotland, then southeasterly through Perth, where it becomes tidal, to its mouth at the Firth of Tay, south of Dundee.

  • Slipway, west shore, north end of Perth’s port

Brief river description

River Tay takes west side (river right) of Moncrieffe (Friarton) Island in Perth City. A causeway (ford – underwater road to the island) located at the north-east edge of the island allowing slower flow river left, manageable even for novice paddlers to travel upstream.

Take upstream direction, to start with. Follow the river left shore for easier travel, e.g. if very windy day, high water flow, little paddling experience by participants… Travel towards the top of the island and return to the main flow of the River Tay once reaching city centre. Take river right all the way back.

You might come across 3 shallow areas, maybe even portages, tide dependant when taking river left side of the island. First one between Willowgate Fisheries pond and the eastern railway bridge. Second under the eastern railway bridge and third, most likely to happen at the causeway. The last one, after trying on many water levels it’s easier to manage when portaging on the mainland, east shore rather than through the island.

Portages will be avoided if high water takes place exactly when you are crossing the causeway. Check tides every time you traveling to built own experience and know what to expect.

Historical facts

  • Railway bridges (west and east one) built originally on 1849 have been updated in 1864. Built by the present iron and masonry viaduct opened in May 1864, designed by B. H. Blyth [1819-1866] and erected by Lee & Freeman at a cost of about £27 000. More can be found here .

Perth City – an ancient capital of Scotland. Called by Roman Bertha/Perth is translated as “wood” from Cumbric and Pictish Gaelic languages and from Celtic as “Aber The”, meaning “mouth of the Tay”. More can be found here .

St Matthews’s Church – an iconic structure at the west shore of the River Tay. Constructed in 1871, a very interesting place to be for anyone who has an interest in architecture, stained glass, history, war memorabilia and more. More can be hound here .

It’s also worth reading about the road crossings in the city, it’s Georgians waterfront and botanical aspects of the city. Théâtre, museums and parks are also a good idea to point along the way

Often we came across oyster catchers, herons, beavers, buzzards, osprey, deer, dippers, otters, salmon. There have been records of seal even reaching the city!

Some of these animals will be more active during the day, some towards evening (e.g. beavers). Traffic on the water also will affect it (recently launched city boat tours – check Perth City website for timings), rare but still happening larger ships coming in to Perth Port and jety skies launching from the Port’s slipway.

Tide dependant, you can extend the trip by another 1.5km when reaching the old road bridge in Perth. Even more when you can paddle as far as Scone Palace and back to Willowgate Activity Centre within two and a half hours!

River Tay is the longest one in Scotland. It’s 117 miles (188km) long, starting at Allt Coire Laoigh, Ben Lui, Scottish Highlands. It becomes tidal from Perth. T he River Tay is Scotland’s longest river and the United Kingdom’s 7th longest river and largest river by water volume discharge, at 100 cubic metres per second.

The “Lower” Tay River to the Tay Canal- An 8.5K Paddle in Perth, ON

  • September 21, 2017 December 13, 2020

For sneak peeks of our (almost!) weekly blog posts or just to chat, follow us over on Instagram !

@adventurereport

We set out to paddle this last section of the Tay River on the long weekend in September. Each section of the Tay River seems to have it’s own personality, and this route was no exception. We had already worked our way through the very low key (but physically challenging) Upper Tay, navigated the more exciting Middle Tay, and were eager to see what the Lower Tay had to offer.

Feeling a little lazy, we decided to bring two cars into Perth so we could do the route only one way. We had thought this route would be 10 kilometres, but it ended up being only 8.5. So we decided to go to the Perth fair after. 🙂

One of the best things about this route is that there is an option to camp at both ends. You could decide to paddle out and spend a night, or out and back and then spend a night where you started.

Our view paddling to the upper Beveridges lock.

Getting There

We knew we were going to end our route at the Beveridges Lockstation, so we dropped a car off at the parking lot there near the oTentniks . We parked by the upper locks right by the river. There was room for a lot of cars and we called down to the lockmaster to make sure it was okay for us to park there. It was, AND it was free.

river tay boat trips perth

Near the upper locks, there’s a small building that has toilets available for the public, and a phone that can be used to call the lockmaster. There’s also a shower in the back of the building, but it was locked. I’m assuming it’s only for those who are renting the oTentniks. There are also kayaks for rent here, so if you didn’t have your own you could rent some here and hit the water! You can use these coordinate to get there: 44.877196, -76.146042 .

We decided to put in at Last Duel Park in Perth. You can use these coordinates to get there: 44.899411, -76.239808 . There was parking for at least fifty cars in the parking lot, right next to the launch. There was also a small camp office that had washrooms and a shower. These are only open during the day though. Behind the camp office, there’s a campsite where many people have set up RVs for the summer. There are tent sites available at Last Duel Park as well.

Power boats are allowed on this section of the Tay River, and many use the public launch at Last Duel Park. We noticed a sign asking that us to pay to launch, at the camp office. Turned out this was for power boats only, but we did have to register our vehicle with the office. Parking was free.

river tay boat trips perth

The launch at Last Duel Park in Perth, ON.

river tay boat trips perth

Camping at different lockstations in Ontario is something that I think is not done nearly often enough. We’ve never done it, and we’re hoping to change that soon!

You can camp at both the upper and lower Beveridges locks for only $4.90 per person per night. The lockmaster I talked to said he prefers the upper locks for camping. There’s more space to set yourself back from the water and get a secluded feeling. He also mentioned that they have campfire bowls that they can move into place for you. There are washrooms and a shower available, and the oTentniks looked like a pretty cool way to camp (glamp?) too.

If there’s no lockmaster there when you arrive, that’s okay- they said you can try and pay up the next day. I forgot to ask whether they take debit, but it’s probably a good bet for you to bring cash if you’re hoping to camp at the locks.

Campsites and a brand new log cabin are available for overnight stays in Last Duel Park. This park is typically open from mid-May to mid-October for tenters and RVers.  This year though, it didn’t open until the beginning of June due to flooding.

river tay boat trips perth

There are washrooms and showers at Last Duel Park that can be accessed by campers any time of the day. You’re given an entry code by the park attendant when you arrive.  Campfires are allowed. The cost for a tent site is just under $30.00 per night, with the log cabin going for just under $85.00. The park attendant is only able to accept cash or debit as payment.

Camping at the locks is probably a cooler experience. I’m just being honest.

We set off from the launch and headed to our right in order to head east towards the Tay Canal and Lower Rideau Lake. We paddled past the RVs on our right, and along a section of the Tay River that was as lovely as we had come to expect, with trees hanging over the banks. On this section of the river, we saw more people than we had seen on any of our journeys along the Tay. At one point, there was a line of seven powerboats coming towards us down the river, heading back towards Last Duel Park.

river tay boat trips perth

The Tay River right before it opens up to wider views.

After paddling for four kilometres, the river opened right up, and we began to paddle through a really neat section of what I would describe as a marsh, with tall grasses everywhere.  Despite how open this space felt, it was still easy to navigate; unlike the rest of the Tay River, there were buoys all through this section that highlighted the route.

river tay boat trips perth

Blue skies and wide open spaces on the Tay River.

There was next to no current throughout this entire route, and that included throughout the marsh. The wind actually picked up a bit while we were in this area, which made the paddling a bit more strenuous.

The Tay River heads northeast for roughly 7.2 kilometres after Last Duel Park. On the satellite images we viewed before heading out on this route, it looks like you could just continue along the river to take “the long way” into Lower Rideau Lake. But, there’s a huge dam that runs the length of the river at this point, with warning signs. We chose not to get close enough to get a good look, although I would have loved to see the other side!

The dam on Tay River.

At this point, we stayed to the right of the split, so we could enter into the Tay Canal. Once again, it was really easy to see where to go because of the signs that were posted.

Entering the Tay Canal.

Getting Home

As expected, the Tay Canal was very calm. We arrived at the upper lockstation after having paddled 8.5 kilometres, which took us an hour and forty minutes. There were two low docks alongside the wall to our left, and we used these to get out. Pulling up alongside them, the docks were about even with the tops of our kayaks. Getting out wasn’t graceful, but we got it done!

The dock at the upper Beveridges lock.

We had brought our kayak locks with us, but noticed a small pile of kayaks behind the lockmaster’s building. We decided to just camouflage our kayaks among these other ones instead of spending the time to lock them up. After all, who would dare steal from the lockmaster?

Kayaks for rent at the Beveridges locks.

If we were going to do this route again, we would just bring one car. Then we would paddle out and back from Last Duel Park. The Beveridges lockstation is a lovely green space with picnic tables and benches available for you to lounge on, and would make a great place to stop for a break and some lunch. I loved checking out the lockstation and seeing all the big boats waiting to move through.

The lower Beveridges lock.

You could also do the opposite and paddle out and back from the Upper Beveridges Locks. If you wanted to make a day of it, you could end your route by camping at the locks at night.

I hope this trip report has enough info to get you there too. Let me know in the comments, or share and tag a friend to start planning your next adventure!

Tay Landscape Partnership

Canoe Trail

The River Tay was once a major thoroughfare through the landscape, linking places and communities. Over the last 100 years boat traffic has declined and very few people have the opportunity to get out onto it. We are creating a canoe trail that links Perth with Bridge of Earn and Newburgh. Volunteers and professionals mapped and filmed the route, and gathered all the information paddlers would need to enjoy a trip on the river. We also offered guided trips for those with less experience, or who were interested in finding out more about the history and wildlife of the river.

Boat shuttle between Broughty Ferry and Tayport to run all year

The five-minute cross-Tay trips are set to stay after a successful trial.

Ian Ashton, owner of SaltDog Marine, says the cross-Tay shuttle is here to stay.

Boat trips between Broughty Ferry and Tayport will run all year round after a successful trial period.

Boat tour firm SaltDog Marine ran trial tours across the Tay during the Easter holidays , allowing passengers to visit either destination by boat.

The Dundee company has now confirmed the shuttle service is here to stay – running regularly throughout the year.

Boat trips between Broughty Ferry and Tayport about ‘the destination, not the journey’

Owner Ian Ashton said: “The initial trial was to see if this was something we could offer between Broughty Ferry and Tayport long-term.

“This has been successful, and the reaction from the public has been great so far.

“Unlike our other tours, this is about the destination rather than the journey.”

SaltDog Marine launched in 2023 and also offers hour-long tours of the River Tay , as well as trips to Perth and corporate days out.

View of Broughty Ferry from tayport.

Passengers travelling between Tayport and Broughty Ferry will have three hours to explore the other side – with the journey approximately five minutes each way.

Ian added: “The biggest challenge is making people aware of what Tayport has to offer.

“There’s Morton Loch Nature Reserve, Tentsmuir Nature Reserve, the Larick Centre and great local businesses like the Harbour Cafe.

‘Something romantic’ about shuttle between Broughty Ferry and Tayport

“So far people have enjoyed the tours and we’ve had plenty of people take the shuttle from either side.

“There’s something romantic about getting away from it all and taking a boat across the Tay for a few hours.”

SaltDog boat leaving Broughty Ferry.

Times and dates of tours between Broughty Ferry and Tayport will be added to the SaltDog Marine website in the coming days.

Ian said: “I want to thank the Tayport Harbour Trust for letting me use their slipway for the tours.

“Without their support, this wouldn’t be possible.”

The Scottish Islands Road-Trip

An island hopping holiday that takes in the stunning isles that sit off the Western coast of Scotland.

Wildlife Lovers

Distance

467 Kilometres

Days to Complete

7-10 Days

river tay boat trips perth

Isle of Arran (1 Day)

One of the most accessible islands of the Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Arran can be reached by ferry, and must be booked in advance. This beautiful island encompasses stunning views and exciting wildlife. We recommend stopping off to see the Machrie Moor standing stones, Brodick and Lochranza Castles, for heritage sites surrounded by jaw droppings vistas. Goatfell is the island’s highest point and can be reached via a fantastic hike. Once you reach the top, weather permitting, you’ll have 360 views across the whole island.

Isle of Islay (2 Days)

North of Arran and the Southernmost island of the Hebridies is the enchanting Isle of Islay. The ferry can be caught from Kinncraigg on the mainland and must be booked in advance. Known for its sumptuous food and drink Islay has many whiskey distilleries to choose from. The 130 mile coastline is interspersed with sandy and shingle beaches, most popular for a chilly dip are Kilchiaran Bay or Tayvulion. To catch sight of some local wildlife, both Killinallan and Ardnave are well known for seal spotting, and sometimes even adorable sea otters are found there.

Isle of Jura (1 Day)

The beautiful Isle of Jura can be accessed directly from the Isle of Islay by the 10 minute ferry. This narrow, mountainous island is home to wild roaming deer, there’s actually more deer inhabitants on this rugged isle than there are people! There are plenty of walking trails across the islands to choose from to get closer to the native wildlife. Stop off for a tour of one of the local whisky distilleries, as you travel along Jura’s one road up to the Ardlussa Estate . This historic house was originally built in the 1600s and was once home to the author George Orwell, who wrote his famous novel 1984 here.

Isle of Mull (2 Days)

Moving further North, the Isle of Mull is the second largest island in the Scottish Hebrides. You can catch the ferry from Oban, Lochaline and Kilchoan, but they require booking in advance. Wildlife lovers and bird watchers flock to this Island every year to catch sight of the adorable sea otters, the frolicking seals, soaring eagles, whales, dolphins and sometimes even basking sharks. There are amazing cycling routes and plentiful hikes to see the island’s glorious scenery, historic caves, and castles.

Isle of Iona (1 Day)

The Isle of Iona is one of the smaller Hebridean islands, only 1.5 miles wide and 3 miles long. Access to this island does allow vehicles with a permit, however its size means many visitors will find it easier to leave their campervan on the mainland and take the island in as a day trip. Its best seen on foot and you can take in the best wildlife and scenery the island has to offer. There are plenty of beaches to see all over the island and cafes, pubs and restaurants to break up a great day’s walking.

Isle of Skye (2 Days)

At 50 miles long, The Isle of Skye is the largest island of the inner Hebrides. Famous for its history, wildlife and spectacular scenery. There’s so much to see and do, from kayaking around the coast, wildlife boat trips, beaches, mountain hiking and much more. Highly recommended are the Isle of Skye Fairy Pools, An Corran Beach, The Cuillan Mountain range (this is a very challenging hike so visitors may want to enjoy from a distance!) and the Old Man of Storr.
