Tunis Village

safari tunis

The small village of Tunis (‘izbat Tunis) is located in the oasis of Fayoum on the way to Wadi Rayan; discover authentic desert adventure on a hill facing the large Qaroun lake. The village overlooks a stunning view of the edge of the desert on the other side of the lake. It is one of the most beautiful places in Egypt.

In the 1980s Evelyne Porret, a potter from Switzerland, moved here with her husband Michel Pastore and built a house and pottery studio. She was the first potter in the village and  she trained many of the local children in the craft of pottery. Several of her students ended up creating their own pottery studio.

Over the last thirty years artists, painters, writers, journalists and others from Cairo and elsewhere have built mud-brick houses in the village; as well as an Art Center which all contribute to Tunis’ lively artistic feel. Today the village includes a School and more than ten Pottery Studios

Tunis village has a few well designed eco-lodges and it is the base for many tours and explorations around Fayoum. Fayoum Art Center: is a Non Profit Organization founded by Egyptian artist Mohamed Abla in 2006. It was inspired by the International Summer Academy in Salzburg where Abla taught for several years. Fayoum Art Center is dedicated to connecting artists locally, regionally and internationally through the creation of art. It does so by providing several large studio spaces, an art library, living areas and a communal dining room which fosters collaboration between its participants. The center is also home to the first Caricature Museum in the Middle East, which holds a vast collection of caricatures by artists such as Saroukhan, George El Bahgoury and Ahmed Toughan. The museum has informative panels that describe the exhibits.

Tunis Village is home to the annual Pottery Festival which takes place every Autumn. It brings together gifted artists-potters from Tunis, Cairo and other parts of Egypt, traditional artisans from rural villages, as well as creative potters from other countries. The Festival offers participants a unique opportunity to explore the importance and value of different forms of pottery, learn from peers in a cross-cultural environment, create and experiment together, and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Egyptian potters and pottery today.

  • jamestA9452DQ 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing. Don’t forget cash and take as much luggage as you want!! I’ve wanted to do this kind of tour for years but had a fear of it being a shambles. The Tunisians certainly know how to arrange a tour, great coaches, amazing tour guides (Manny) and sights and experiences that you would pay a small fortune for in another country. It all started with a 6am pick up from our hotel and then a 2 hour coach journey before the stop in El Jem for the Colosseum. It’s amazing here and lots to see but not a lot to do. Be prepared for everyone asking you to buy things but a polite no is enough. Buy a drink from the last shop outside before getting back on the coach as it’s the cheapest. Another 2 hour journey before the next stop at the Troglodyte villages and traditional lunch and a visit to a 500yr old cave home. After this we made our way to Douz where the hotel is and where you get a choice of the quad bikes or camel rides or both!! I’ve always wanted to go in a quad on the Sahara desert and it’s brilliant fun, men will appear on mopeds with desert foxes for you to have pictures with so take money if you want to do this as it’s not for free. Same with the baby camel before the Troglodyte village. The only let down was the hotel overnight. It’s very basic and the food is terrible but the beer is good and the swimming pool is lovely. Bedrooms very basic but comfy. Day 2 was a 5AM!! Wake up and a chase to see the sunrise in the middle of the desert. Amazing. Once in a lifetime feeling and experience. Then onto Tozeur for the 4x4 drive deeper into the desert OVER the dunes to the Star Wars set. This was again a bit of a let down and basically a market. More camel pictures here and some odd trinkets to buy. Back in the 4x4’s and a race at 70mph over the sand to the Oasis tour via horse and cart. The horses here are slender beasts and they work hard. The oasis tour is very random but fun and you get to try fresh dates of course with the option to buy. Everyone had a price on these tours and it’s best to tip them if you can as it’s a very cheap tour. After this we were back on the coach for 3 hours (with toilet and drink break) to Kairouan for the largest Mosque in Tunisia and a rug shop next door. This is the obligatory shopping part and was a bit of a let down but plenty to buy and fixed prices so no bartering allowed. Last part of the journey was 2 hours back to our hotel and just in time for dinner. The driver and guide were brilliant. And all of this for £108 per Adult and 1250km covered almost reaching Algeria!! And everything included except drinks. Take cash and get cash when you can. Get snack if the hotel food isn’t great from the cafes you stop at but crisps are not crisps so if you see a market the day before you go then stock up. Take a big suitcase as it goes in the hold of the bus. Take lots of clothes if you want and maybe cards for the coach as there is a lot of travelling. You get time to sleep and rest and most coaches have usb charging onboard. Read more Written March 17, 2024

We paid £100 pp includes 2 x lunch, 1 x dinner and 1 x bed and breakfast. Also includes 4 x 4 ride. We paid extra for camel ride and horse and carriage ride but wasn't much. It was a very interesting excursion but very tiring. • InTheMunee36 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not Good We have been on a lot of tours. Bottom line - this was not good. We were greeted on time but in an oddly cold manner by the guide, and we were driven in a very old and slightly rusty 4x4. Immediately, we were beginning to regret it. We don’t like super chatty and overly gregarious guides, but this elderly gentleman was pretty stoic. Not unfriendly, but not friendly either. Not a lot of value or interesting information. We were shown some less-than-exciting sites to start, and candidly it was boring. Seeing and walking through the actual Carthage ruins was neat, but you can do it in 15 minutes. The white and blue town was pleasant with some nice souvenir shops, but I don’t know that we would have made the trip for it - but visiting it is fine, if you are looking for something to do. Lunch in a restaurant was provided as part of the tour. They don’t give you a choice, and you aren’t given their menu - they just bring out courses with no explanation. However, the food did taste good and exceeded our expectations. After lunch, we just called it quits and said we wanted to go back to our hotel. Based on the first part of the day, we could tell that it wasn’t going to get better, and we’d rather have our time back to relax or do something else. I would not recommend this tour, nor the guide and the vehicle they used. Read more Written October 7, 2022

  • Natejordon 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Mixed feelings about the Sahara explorer private tour I’ve got real conflicted views on this one. I organized a private tour during winter given my fixed travel dates. Firstly on the actual Sahara sights it’s pretty good. For day one - the El Jem coliseum is pretty well preserved, while the camel safari is only good for camel photos with the desert not so impressive with only very small dunes right next door to town that looks more beach rather than desert. For day two - the salt lake is just ok - those who have been to Bolivia or Danakil won’t find it particularly impressive. Highlights are the desert country near Algeria where you can see the camel mountain, larger dunes and the old Star Wars sets in close proximity. I’d say those sights make the tour worthwhile. I was given both a driver and guide - and I found my guide a bit underwhelming versus others I’ve had touring Africa. My guide’s english wasn’t so strong so communication was an issue at times. He seemed very focused on delivering facts you can get from your smartphone. Personally I think the better guides I’ve had are those who can talk beyond the facts which I would have expected for a private trip. And him and the driver spent the ride largely talking between themselves in Arabic Lastly on logistics - things weren’t run particularly well. Organized a private car back to Tunis through the agency - but had to wait 35min for the car to arrive for the 100min trip! Overall the desert tour was good so no regrets. But if you choose to use Sahel voyages - i would suggest setting expectations at the right level because their service is just average versus comparable trips I’ve done through Africa, Central Asia, central and south America and Eastern Europe Read more Written December 14, 2018

InstaDeep CEO Takes AI From Tunis To London

  • Order Reprints
  • Print Article

Karim Beguir, the founder and CEO of InstaDeep, says artificial intelligence presents an opportunity for African economies to go beyond simply exporting raw materials

Karim Beguir launched the artificial intelligence start-up InstaDeep in Tunisia in 2014 with just two computers and $2,000.

By 2023, it was an international operation bought by German laboratory BioNTech for $700 million.

"For the first time, we saw that a start-up launched in Africa with very limited resources could become a major international player," the French-Tunisian CEO, who co-founded the company with Tunisian self-taught IT enthusiast Zohra Slim, told AFP.

It gives young Africans the "hope of being part of tomorrow's innovation and technology," he said.

InstaDeep specialises in decision-making artificial intelligence (AI) that helps businesses develop applications to optimise cost and efficiency.

It made a name for itself at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic by creating a system with BioNTech -- which developed one of the earliest Covid vaccines -- to identify dangerous variants "on average two months before they are reported", according to data published in scientific journals.

InstaDeep put "Tunisia and Africa on the map (in AI). It showed that this kind of story was possible", added Beguir, 47, who is CEO of the company now based in London.

"At the time, when I said we were going to do things at the level of the big boys like Meta, Google, DeepMind and others, everyone laughed in my face," Beguir said of its initial launch.

As well as researching personalised cancer vaccines with BioNTech, InstaDeep is working on projects to fully automate routing for Germany’s national rails, improve operations management at Frankfurt airport and predict cricket invasions in Africa.

The company claims to be "already profitable" with sales of more than 10 million euros ($11 million), though the company did not want to disclose the precise figure.

InstaDeep grew from 60 employees in 2018, to 350 employees across Africa, the Middle East, Europe and America.

It has offices in Tunis, Lagos, Cape Town and Kigali, along with London, Dubai, Paris, Berlin, Boston and San Francisco.

"Thanks to the movement that we have helped start, young Africans can hope of being part of tomorrow's innovation and technology, and in particular AI, which is the technology of our generation," said Beguir.

He said artificial intelligence presents an opportunity for African economies to go beyond simply exporting fuels and minerals, and make inroads into higher value-added activities.

"Selling raw natural resources is not enough. We really need to create things with a much greater added value," he said.

Beguir grew up in the southern Tunisian city of Tataouine before studying in France and then the United States.

He went on to work in financial engineering for major US players like JPMorgan and the Bank of America, before embarking on entrepreneurship in Africa.

Senegalese teacher and AI researcher Seydina Ndiaye, one of 38 experts selected by the UN to form an AI think tank, has said Africa needs to be more involved in AI development because otherwise "the greatest threat is colonisation by AI."

Experts have regularly pointed out gender and race biases in models designed by major tech companies.

"If young Africans develop applications for African communities, you are much less likely to see bias towards these populations than if they were developed in Silicon Valley or Asia," said InstaDeep's Beguir.

When can Africa expect to see other AI champions emerge?

"If we manage to channel this living force into high-level innovation, I would say we will have 10 InstaDeeps in 10 years," predicted Beguir, provided we resolve obstacles such as the freedom of movement for researchers across the continent.

"As crazy as it may seem, in some cases it is easier for a young African with technology skills to come and work in France than to go to another African country," he warned.
