Sandemans free tour of Paris / advice/ reviews?

Has anyone taken the free PARIS walking tour offered by Sandemans - https://www.neweuropetours.eu/sandemans-tours/paris/free-tour-of-paris/

AND if you did, how was it ?

Victoria (Toronto, Canada)

Yes, I have, in 2016. It wasn't too bad, but the young guide did feel the need to mention that he worked only for tips about every 10 minutes.

Better tours are with the Paris Walks company. You pay, but the guides are very knowledgeable and interesting. No need to book, at least there didn't used to be.

https://paris-walks.com/download-pdf_m.html

Thank you SJ! I used to do the London Walks from that firm when I lived in London .. 1998!

Glad to know that they are still around and also in Paris.. I will check that out.

Many thanks!

I have done Sandemans free walking tours in a bunch of cities (Munich, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Barcelona, Paris) and have always enjoyed them. Paris was good, but towards the lower end simply because the tour was so crowded, so it's possible a paid company with a smaller group might offer something better.

You get what you pay for... Go in with low expectations

I felt like it was a waste of time. I knew more than the guide. I did tip but won't ever bother to take another one of these.

Travel Tips & Inspiration to Help You Explore the World

The Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount, , taken on Sandemans tour of the Holy City in Jerusalem / Melody Moser

“Traveling—it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” —Ibn Battuta

A remarkable tour of the Holy City with Sandemans

Have you ever wanted to walk in the footsteps of those who’ve lived, loved, and laughed long ago?  Jerusalem’s Old City is a place with thousands of years of history, an ideal destination to explore life as it once was.

Two months ago, during a trip to Israel, I was invited to take a tour of the Holy City, so I embarked on the Sandemans NEW Jerusalem Holy City Tour , an opportunity to immerse myself in the history of this mesmerizing city.

The Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount, Jerusalem / Melody Moser

Spanning four hours, this comprehensive walking tour escorts you through the four distinct quarters of the Old City and ascends to the Temple Mount , one of the world’s most revered religious sites.

Commencing at the historic Jaffa Gate in the Old City, the tour offers a captivating historical narrative, weaving together 5,000 years of the city’s romantic, challenging, and transformative past.

We began inside the Jaffa Gate, where our guide, Gary, huddled us together, his voice rising over the bustling backdrop of vendors peddling their goods.

“The Holy City is the spiritual center of the world,” he shared. “Not only for the Jews but for the Muslims and Christians as well.”

As a car trundled over the cobblestones, Gary urged us to step aside, then delved deeper: ‘For Judaism, Jerusalem has been the holiest city and the spiritual heartland since the 10th century BCE. In Christian lore, Jerusalem’s place in the life of Jesus gives it great importance, as Jesus taught and healed here..’

I absorbed this rich tapestry of history, almost overwhelmed.

“Jerusalem is also considered a sacred site in Sunni Islamic tradition, along with Mecca and Medina. All three religions here fit together like a beautiful puzzle,” he concluded.

From the Jaffa Gate to the Zion Gate

The tower of david.

The Tower of David Citadel / Melody Moser

Departing from the Jaffa Gate, we ambled past an alley brimming with shops, their scents of exotic spices perfuming the air. Our journey paused before the iconic Tower of David . Named after King David, who reigned in 1010–970 BCE, this ancient citadel stands as a vigilant guardian on the Western edge of the Old City.

This medieval fortress, augmented with architectural enhancements from subsequent periods, houses the fabulous Museum of the History of Jerusalem. The Tower is also renowned for its exceptional sound and light show, The Night Spectacular , which vividly narrates Jerusalem’s journey from ancient times to modern days.

It’s a spectacle, unlike any other sound and light show I’ve encountered, truly living up to its name. The Tower of David (and The Night Spectacular) is an unmissable experience for anyone seeking to comprehend the country’s last 4,000 years.

Interestingly, despite its name, ‘The Tower of David’ has no direct link to the ancient king. This misnomer dates back to the Byzantine era when a tower from King Herod’s time (the Tower of Phasael) was mistakenly attributed to King David.

The room of the Last Supper

Walking toward King David's Tomb /Melody Moser

As we continued along the narrow street, we hugged the walls to allow cars to squeeze past. Approaching the Franciscan Monastery, we ascended a staircase and entered the Room of the Last Supper , revered as one of Christianity’s holiest sites in Jerusalem. This room is believed to be the location where Jesus and his disciples held the Passover meal, later known as the Last Supper.

Intriguingly, this historic chamber once served as a mosque. The room is illuminated by Gothic stained glass windows, casting a beautiful cerulean blue light. Inside, we observed an ornate mihrab (alcove) and Arabic plaques adorning the walls.

King David’s Tomb

Entrance to King David's tomb, Jerusalem / Melody Moser

Descending to a level below the Room of the Last Supper, we found ourselves in a cramped space housing the velvet-draped royal tomb of King David . To reach it, visitors must navigate through segregated prayer areas designated for men and women.

We learned there is some debate regarding the tomb’s authenticity. According to the Bible, David was interred in the City of David, an archaeological site stretching from the southern walls of Jerusalem’s Old City. However, for over two thousand years, this site has been a focal point for tears and prayers, emanating a profound sense of reverence.

As a side note, if you have time to return to this area later, you can visit the nearby grave of Oskar Schindler , the man who saved more than 1200 Jews during the Holocaust, a story immortalized in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning film, Schindler’s List.

The Jewish Quarter

The western wall.

The Western Wall, Jerusalem / Melody Moser

Unlike its neighboring quarters, the Jewish Quarter is mostly residential. It exudes a more tranquil atmosphere compared to the bustling Muslim and Christian Quarters.

Housing around 4,500 residents, its modern stone structures were reconstructed after 1967, following significant damage during the War of Independence in 1948.

This rebuilding phase was coupled with extensive archaeological excavations, unveiling numerous captivating sites.

Among them is the Cardo , an ancient Roman street that once thrived as a marketplace.

My tour happened to fall on a Thursday, a day favored for Bar Mitzvah celebrations. The streets were alive with families joyously making their way to the Western Wall , their paths marked by music, laughter, and the cheerful sight of blue and white polka-dotted balloons dancing in the sunlight.

Bar Mitzvah day in the Old City / Melody Moser

Our initial glimpse of the Western Wall was from an overlook offering a breathtaking view. Often referred to as the ‘Wailing Wall’, this site is among the holiest in Judaism and radiates immense spiritual significance.

Standing there, I was struck by a profound sense of humility.

Despite the throngs of people, a moment of serenity washed over me as I closed my eyes, enveloping me in a powerful aura of awe.

The Temple Mount

Dome of the rock.

Melody in front of the Dome of the Rock, Temple Mount, Jerusalem / Melody Moser

This tour sets itself apart from other Old City tours by including an ascent to the Temple Mount . To access it, be prepared for a potentially lengthy wait in the security line.

It’s wise to wear a hat and apply plenty of sunscreen, as shade is scarce. Nonetheless, the wait can be quite entertaining – Gary kept us captivated with legends and stories of Jerusalem.

As I stood there, I remembered a previous visit years ago, when my sister, who was living in Jerusalem for a year, took me to the Dome of the Rock . At the time, visitors were able to go inside this Islamic shrine on the Temple Mount.

I was twenty years old, and it was my first time so far away from home. An old man had approached me and motioned for me to remove my footwear. I did so, and he guided me inside the ancient edifice, murmuring in Arabic. I had no idea what he said, but I will never forget the strange mix of fear, excitement, and reverence I felt at the time.

Today, the policy has changed, and non-Muslims are generally not permitted inside. However, the structure’s exterior continues to be a source of immense fascination.

The Dome of the Rock is revered as the site where Prophet Mohammed is believed to have ascended to heaven. As the oldest extant Islamic monument, its beauty is awe-inspiring.

The dome, which was originally gold, underwent replacements first with copper and then aluminum. However, the aluminum is now gilded with gold leaf, generously donated by the late King Hussein of Jordan.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque

View of old city wall of Jerusalem with Al Aksa mosque

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is another beautiful site, perhaps less photographed but equally significant. As the third holiest site in Islam, following Mecca and Medina, it holds great importance.

Around the Temple Mount, we observed numerous groups of Muslim women engaged in study or enjoying picnics with their children.

Exiting through the Bab El Qattanin gate into the Muslim Quarter, we were led to the bustling Cotton Market . Here, around fifty vendors captivate children with an array of toys and vibrantly colored candy.

The Muslim Quarter

L unch at abu shukri.

Hummus at Abu Shukri / Melody Moser

As we navigated the maze-like alleys of the Muslim Quarter, my excitement peaked upon learning that Abu Shukri was our designated lunch spot.

My affection for hummus knows no bounds. This exquisite spread, crafted from cooked and mashed chickpeas or other beans, then blended with tahini, olive oil, and lemon juice, became a daily delight during my stay in Israel.

Of all the places I tried, the hummus at Abu Shukri in the Old City stood out as the best. Renowned as ‘the ultimate arbiters of Arab-style hummus,’ according to GoJerusalem.com, their other dishes were equally tantalizing.

Gary offered us the option to dine at Abu Shukri with the group or venture out independently for lunch. For me, the choice was straightforward. This quaint, family-run establishment might be compact and bustling, but the wait is unquestionably worthwhile.

The Via Dolorosa

On the Via Dolorosa / Melody Moser

The Via Dolorosa , the Way of Sorrows , is the path believed to have been taken by Jesus as he bore his cross towards the site of his crucifixion and burial. Each station along the route commemorates a specific event that occurred during this solemn journey.

Upon leaving Abu Shukri , you find yourself at the 5th Station, where, according to tradition, Simon of Cyrene was compelled by the Romans to assist Jesus with his cross.

We continued our path, weaving through groups of devout pilgrims and eager tourists with cameras in hand, all the way to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre , which houses the final five stations.

The Christian Quarter

Inside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher / Melody Moser

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

The Christian Quarter of the Old City is a mosaic of souvenir shops, artists’ workshops, hostels, and residences for nearly 4,500 people. Dominating this quarter is the imposing gray dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre .

Regarded as the site of Jesus’ crucifixion and burial, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre has long been a key pilgrimage destination for Christians worldwide. Nestled on the historic hill of Calvary, it is believed that the church’s construction was influenced by Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, some 300 years after the crucifixion.

In a unique arrangement, the church is shared by six Christian denominations. Due to longstanding rivalries, the keys to the church have been entrusted to a local Muslim family, the Nusseibehs.

Gary guided us through various sections of the church, ranging from the Stone of Unction near the entrance to the Chapels of Adam and St. Helena, culminating at the ornate pink marble tomb.

I wholeheartedly recommend the Sandemans tour to anyone visiting Jerusalem. It’s an enriching journey through the city’s history, politics, and diverse community.

Two Tour Options

For those pressed for time or seeking a brief overview of the Old City, Sandemans NEW Jerusalem Tours also offers a complimentary 2-hour tour that serves as an excellent introduction.

Having experienced both, I found each to be uniquely insightful. Additionally, for travelers exploring Europe, Sandemans operates tours in 18 cities – a detail worth checking on their website.

A few tips for visitors

Modesty in dress is essential for entry into many churches and holy sites, as well as for accessing the Temple Mount . It is advisable to wear appropriate attire; shorts are generally not allowed.

Carrying religious items such as Bibles or religious-themed jewelry is prohibited on the Temple Mount . Additionally, items like tripods, laptops, iPads, or Kindles are not allowed. If you happen to bring these items by mistake, Sandemans can store them for you during the tour.

Be aware that the Temple Mount is closed to non-Muslim visitors on Fridays and Saturdays. It may also be temporarily inaccessible during the week due to security concerns or religious holidays.

Note: While this information was accurate at the time of publication, it is subject to change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

I received a complimentary tour in exchange for writing this review. However, all reviews and opinions are my own.

Hunt Yachts For Sale

This is a story about a boat line that takes us back fifty years! Yes, Raymond “Ray” Hunt, a self-educated designer with an inner knowledge of what goes into designing a yacht along with the wisdom on the best way a boat can cruise in the seas, gave us Hunt Yachts. He has added much to the boat design sector with his incredible designs such as the Boston Whaler, Concordia yawl, 12 Meter America’s Cup yacht Easterner, and Bertram powerboats. His revolutionary Deep-V hull design has made its mark in time. The Hunt Deep-V continues to be the leader in boat design into our current time. Ray Hunt, Jr., Ray’s grandson, has carried on the legacy of the Hunt family and has led each Hunt project as Director of Manufacturing & Engineering for the company.

Hunt Yachts have a few areas that set them apart from others in its class. As mentioned above, their legendary Hunt Deep-V. This is the heart and soul of the Hunt Yacht’s stellar performance. Ray Hunt developed and patented this extraordinary invention in the late fifties/early sixties. The Deep-V hull is known as the ultimate hull-form for performance and one can feel safe and comfortable riding inside even in rough seas. This genius idea that Ray came up with seems to be one that can’t be duplicated by others and is still considered the original deadrise angle proven as the best ride ever. The downeast yacht style has become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly among sailboat owners looking for a classic power boat.

Moppie, was the new 31-foot powerboat which, in 1960, caught the attention of all with this revolutionary new hull design. She was the prototype of this incredible Deep-V hull. Moppie won the Miami-Nassau offshore powerboat race to top the excitement off with a bang. It was most impressive as a third of the fleet fell out of the race due to the oceans horrific conditions, yet Moppie won and in record time! Her average speed of 20 knots during the race gained the attention of many. Sports Illustrated even wrote of this event and brought the Hunt Deep-V it’s fame.

The design firm of C. Raymond Hunt Associates has created versions of the Hunt Deep-V for over fifty years for the well - known manufacturers such as Grady White, Grand Banks, and Boston Whaler. Keeping up with the latest in styles and performance, the latest version of the notable Hunt Deep-V, is kept solely for Hunt Yachts ensuring that if you purchase a Hunt Yacht it’s the only one with the authentic design Ray Hunt developed.

Hunt Yachts and the design firm of C. Raymond Hunt and Associates has, over time, been able to achieve optimal performance while retaining the legendary “Hunt style”. You’ll find in this collaboration the most renowned naval architects, designers and engineers all sharing total dedication to passing on C. Raymond Hunt’s legacy, while constantly advancing on the Hunt Deep-V to keep up with modern boat building trends and performance.

Hunt Yachts joined The Hinckley Company in 2013. This blending was most exciting taking two well-known and historical companies, those of Henry R. Hinckley and C. Raymond Hunt, to make American boatbuilding an even better platform to go to for a superb product. Now offering a pool of talent, Hunt owners have the option of being welcomed at any of Hinckley’s six centers from Florida to Maine for not only service and maintenance but hospitality.

To introduce you to the model line-up, let’s look further. Hunt offers an Ocean 56, and Ocean 63, and an Ocean 76. One of the most popular of those three is the Hunt Ocean 63 which has been designed and built for the boater who is used to the best, searching for a special build experience and a custom built yacht that offers speed and performance in nearly all ocean conditions. You will feel confident to come to Hunt Yachts with a specific vision of what your perfect yacht should look like and have that vision come to fruition. Choose from cherry, teak or mahogany or any other custom desire when stepping into the design project. The Hunt Ocean 63 offers several different layouts including 3 or 4 cabins or galley up or down, etc. You’ll find it hard to find another yacht in its size or class offering as many layouts along with the customization the 63 provides.

Their Coastal models include the Harrier 26, SurfHunter 32, 32 Center Console and the Harrier 32. To dig a little further into one of those that seem to be turning lots of heads is the last one mentioned - the Harrier 32.

The Harrier 32 is a version of the classic flush deck runabout and received its inspiration from the sweet Harrier 26. The Harrier 32 is a sporty classic featuring additional space on deck and below making her the perfect boat for daytrips and weekend jaunts. Her enormous cockpit and on-deck galley makes entertaining a breeze. We wish to point out her stand-up, enclosed head with shower, wide v-berth, and plenty of storage. She has a lovely, dry ride thanks to the Hunt Deep-V and also offers fabulous visibility to watch the stretch open up in front of you.

To wrap up our time with Hunt Yachts, we wanted to let our reader know that one new and exciting offering they have rolled out this year is their YachtCare which brings together their 10 state of the art YachtCare Centers to deliver their owner’s an experience never found before. YachtCare for Hunt Yachts will make being part of their family even better!

About hunt yachts.

Founded by legendary racing sailor and self-taught designer C. Raymond Hunt, Rhode Island-based Hunt Yachts possesses a deep and intuitive knowledge of yacht design. With a distinguished portfolio ranging from the Concordia yawl to the Ocean 76, Hunt offers innovative, high-performance semi-custom yachts and powerboats characterized by their innovative deep-V hull design and distinct New England style.

More About Hunt Yachts

Hunt Yachts’ heritage began with New England’s premier marine innovator, C. Raymond “Ray” Hunt, in 1961. Hunt was himself a brilliant competitive sailor, having won the 1925 Sears Cup when he was just 15. Hunt, sometimes called the ‘New England Archimedes,’ was an entirely self-taught yacht designer, led by his intimate, enthusiastic boat knowledge and brilliant instinct. By the late 1930s, Hunt drew up plans for the first Concordia yawls and was experimenting plywood, a new material at the time. By 1953, Hunt was a well-respected designer in the yacht industry; and when he and his family raced their own Concordia 41 at Cowes Week in England just a few years later, Hunt’s reputation continued to skyrocket.

In 1963, Hunt developed the deep-V hull design that sets Hunt Yachts apart. The deep-V hull, a high deadrise hull, has a sharp forward entry and a more streamlined forefoot, allowing the boat to cut through rough waters at speed and with maximum maneuverability which revolutionized the motoryacht industry.

It was around this time that Hunt created the original Boston Whaler, perhaps the most popular recreational boat known to man. The 13-foot whaler, with its deep-V hull, was eminently stable, had an inimitable load-carrying capacity – but it was a superbly high-performance boat, capable of handling the rough weather conditions of New England waters at maximum speed.

Hunt’s impact on the marine industry cannot be overstated: from the celebrated Boston Whaler to US Navy patrol boats – Hunt improved the destroyer hull for the US Navy – his influence is perceptible and far-reaching. Though Hunt died in 1978 and his company was acquired in 2013 by Scout Partners, his legend lives on in contemporary offerings such as the Ocean 76, a smooth-riding, luxurious flybridge yacht, and the Surfhunter 32, a 32-foot poweryacht based on one of Hunt’s original designs.

HUNT YACHT MODELS

Ocean 76 The expansive space of this 76-foot flybridge yacht is distributed across three impeccably designed and furnished decks. With its classically exquisite brightwork, teak-and-holly decks and contrasting white and blue exterior, the Ocean 76 exudes all the charm and character of the Eastern Seaboard. Traditional? Yes. Outdated? Far from it. The Ocean 76 emanates an elevated, genteel sense of cool with its cream upholstery and cherrywood accents, rounded bow and minimalist lines. Equipped with fingertip steering, a full suite of Garmin navigation instruments and the legendary deep-V hull, this vessel provides a smooth, level and dry ride in any weather, the Ocean 76 is exceptionally navigable, perfect for long expeditions. With four en-suite cabins, this yacht can accommodate a large family and a standard crew. The extensive seating areas across all levels of this model make it superbly conducive to throwing celebrations or entertaining large gatherings. Powered by dual 1,900 hp Caterpillar C32 ACERT engines, the Ocean 76 hums along at 26 knots and can reach a max speed of 31 knots. With an Ocean 76, the horizons are endless – and beautiful.

32 CC Part of Hunt’s Coastal Series, the 32 Center Console was made for enjoying and engaging with the sea. Perfect for fishing, wakeboarding, or simply enjoying a summer jaunt with your friends and family, the 32 CC is a small but perfectly formed daytripping machine. One of the more notable features of this vessel is the unique and family-friendly aft-facing walk-in companionway configuration that is exceptionally conducive to little ones running around in safety. The aft-facing helm and cockpit ensure easy communication with your below-deck guests. A 30-gallon livewell in the transom, rodholders beneath the gunwale, and secure under-seat rod storage make the 32 CC ideal for fishermen, amateur and enthusiast alike.

Once you’ve reeled in your catch, you can take a nap on the single daybed located forward of the extended console. What the 32 CC lacks in sleeping accommodation it more than makes up for in lounge space, accommodating up to 8. The integral swim platform is also perfect for swimming and watersports. Two showers – a transom and a stand-up shower below deck – allow you and your guests to spruce yourselves up after a long day of sun-soaked leisure. Twin 250 HP outboard Yamaha or Mercury Yanmar Diesel IO engines provide a cruising speed of 30 knots and top speed of 44 knots. The 32 CC is all about good, plain fun in safety and comfort. And who doesn’t want that? Ocean 55 MKII

The zippy offshore cruising flybridge yacht offers speed and maneuverability in almost any sea condition. With a slightly rounded hardtop sheltering the flybridge and sleek, dynamic lines, the Ocean 55 MKII looks like it’s moving even when it’s at rest. Split across three levels with two en suite cabins and generous seating areas on every level, the Ocean 55 offers the highest level of comfort and luxury. Alternating between warm, polished wood and more natural wood accents and a serene, nautical light blue exterior, this yacht will appeal to anyone with a timeless, chic sense of style. Add to this the stable, secure navigability of the vessel and it is hard not to feel an instant sense of calm when you step aboard. Ukraine-Russia war latest: Anti-Putin chants ring out as thousands line streets for Navalny funeral - and Russians urged to gather in towns

Good morning. Our live coverage remains paused today, but if you're just checking in, let's catch you up on the key developments that took place this morning and yesterday.

Navalny funeral: In front of riot police and, reportedly, rooftop snipers, thousands of people gathered in Moscow to pay their respects to Alexei Navalny yesterday.

In a rare show of defiance to the Kremlin, onlookers chanted "Russia will be free", "No to war", "Russia without Putin", "We won't forgive" and "Putin is a murderer."

Among those queuing to bid Mr Navalny farewell were foreign officials like Washington's ambassador to Russia, Lynne Tracy, and French diplomat Pierre Levy.

Political prisoner: The wife of British-Russian citizen Vladimir Kara-Murza, who is jailed in Siberia, met David Cameron to push for more action to secure his release.

Mr Kara-Murza was jailed for 25 years in April for "treason" after speaking out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Russian advance: Russia has been accumulating forces around Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine, west of Bakhmut, as it seeks to make a breakthrough in the Donetsk region, a Ukrainian official said.

NATO expands: Hungarian parliament speaker Laszlo Kover signed off on the ratification of Sweden's NATO accession and forwarded the legislation to the president's office.

Flats attacked: A Russian drone attack killed at least two people and wounded eight when it crashed into an apartment block in Ukraine's southern port city of Odesa, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Meanwhile, an apartment building in St Petersburg suffered damage after an "emergency", Russian authorities said.

State news agency TASS reported an "explosion", while local news and social media said a drone hit the building.

We'll be back soon to bring you the latest updates on the war in Ukraine.

You can scroll back through the blog to read what happened today.

The wife of British-Russian citizen Vladimir Kara-Murza, who is jailed in Siberia, has met David Cameron to push for more action to secure his release.

Mr Kara-Murza was jailed for 25 years by a Moscow court in April 2023 for "treason" after speaking out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Today, his wife Evgenia Kara-Murza met Lord Cameron after calling for the British government to take more concrete action on his case.

She said she was "very happy" that the meeting had taken place after a lengthy campaign and regarded it as "a sign of goodwill".

She said: "He assured me of his support and his willingness, his preparedness, to fight for Vladimir's release and to make sure that Vladimir's case is always publicised.

"So I think, all in all, it went well."

The EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has paid tribute to Alexei Navalny today.

He said the Russian opposition leader remained  "an inspiration for many in Russia and beyond" and his beliefs "will not disappear".

Mr Navalny died at the age of 47 in an Arctic penal colony on 16 February, sparking accusations from his supporters that he had been murdered.

The Kremlin has denied any state involvement in his death.

We reported earlier there have been at least 45 arrests in Russia following the funeral of Alexei Navalny.

The Russian human rights group OVD info reported at least six arrests were made in Moscow and 18 people were detained in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk.

Another 10 were detained while laying flowers in Yekaterinburg, a city east of the Ural Mountains.

Here are some of the scenes emerging from Russia today...

Alexei Navalny remains a "shining example of what Russia could and should be", the US embassy in Russia said today.

In a statement on X, the embassy also said Mr Navalny's death was a "tragic reminder of the lengths the Kremlin will go to silence its critics".

Russian authorities still have not announced the cause of death for Mr Navalny but many Western leaders have blamed his death on Vladimir Putin, which the Kremlin has rejected.

While today's news has been dominated by the funeral of Alexei Navalny, there appear to be potentially significant developments on the ground in Ukraine.

An official in the country has said Russia is currently accumulating large forces around Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine, as it seeks to make a breakthrough in the Donetsk region.

Illia Yevlash, spokesperson for the operational group overseeing the eastern front line, told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that Russian forces were concentrating efforts to make a powerful push on the key strategic city to the west of Bakhmut, which fell to Moscow last May - and were hoping to advance toward Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.

Ukrainian forces battling Russian efforts to advance in the Bakhmut direction say they have been experiencing a large Russian push over the last three weeks and are facing constant attacks as Moscow troops send in wave after wave of infantry and target them with a variety of artillery and drones.

With the war now into its third year, Russian forces have been bludgeoning some Ukrainian defensive positions into submission, deploying overwhelming amounts of artillery and troop numbers in an effort to punch through defensive lines at targeted points.

Though Russia's gains have been small, slow and costly, Ukraine does not have enough reservists and has a severe shortage of artillery shells as the supply of military aid from Western partners has waned.

A spokesman for the 17th separate tank brigade said that despite limited resources, Ukrainian forces were trying their best to adjust their defence to the ever-changing Russian tactics, even as troops on the ground reported they could not respond with the same firepower and personnel as Russia is able to use against them.

The commander of the tank company working in the Bakhmut direction said: "You can really feel it, the density of fire is higher. When we can make 10 shots, they can make 50, they have an advantage over us in ammunition, it's undeniable."

"And also, there is an advantage in manpower," said Dmytro, 28, who only gave his first name due to security concerns.

A Jehovah's Witness has been jailed for eight years in Russia after he held a worship meeting via videoconference.

The court in southwestern Russia found the follower guilty of organising "extremist activities" after he was secretly filmed by a mole, according to a spokesman for the group.

Russia's Supreme Court designated the Christian denomination as "extremist" in 2017.

Since then, raids, interrogations and jailings of worshippers have occurred with some regularity.

Religious life in Russia is dominated by the Russian Orthodox Church, which is championed by Vladimir Putin.

Hundreds of mourners are still queuing outside the cemetery Alexei Navalny was buried in, the independent Russian news outlet Mediazona reports.

The outlet reports that police are allowing people to enter the cemetery in batches of 50.

The line currently stretches for at least 200 metres, with passing cars honking in support, Mediazona reports.

Under heavy police presence, thousands of people bade farewell to Alexei Navalny at his funeral in Moscow today.

The funeral followed a battle with authorities over the release of his body.

His team said several Moscow churches refused to hold the funeral but they eventually got permission from the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God Soothe My Sorrows.

After the service, thousands marched to the nearby Borisovskoye Cemetery, where the police were also out in force.

Here are just some of the scenes from today...

Americans are turning to gardening, hunting, and extreme couponing to combat rising food prices

  • Americans are fighting back against rising food prices.
  • US consumers are spending more on food than they have in 30 years.
  • Some are relying on the hunting-gathering instincts of our ancestors to keep food on the table.

Insider Today

Americans are increasingly relying on unorthodox cost-cutting measures to ensure they continue to eat amid ongoing inflation and rising food prices.

Recently, US consumers are spending more money on food than they have in the past 30 years, The Wall Street Journal reported last week, citing data from the US Department of Agriculture. Americans spent 11.3% of their disposable income on food in 2022 — more than they have since 1991.

Restaurant prices were up 5.1% in January 2024 compared to the same month last year, and grocery costs jumped 1.2% in the same time period, The Journal reported, citing Labor Department data.

Even as the inflation that rocked the economy last year begins to settle, food prices are continuing to climb, Business Insider previously reported, with common ingredients such as beef and sugar reaching sky-high prices on the grocery shelf.

Dining-out options are also on the spendy side as restaurants raise prices and cut portion sizes to stay in business.

Meanwhile, WK Kellogg CEO Gary Pilnick and PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta are urging middle-class Americans to eat cereal for dinner and use Doritos as side dishes to combat price hikes.

Elevated food costs are likely here for the long haul.

But as exorbitant food costs become the new normal, consumers are fighting back and coming up with their own ways to keep food on the table.

The Journal collected hundreds of reader responses and compiled several cost-saving tips into a Tuesday story about how Americans are responding to rising prices.

Many said they had taken a strict no-eating-out policy, while others are relying on couponing during their weekly grocery trips. Buying in bulk can keep prices low, as well as purchasing non-spoilable food, people told the outlet.

A Las Vegas woman said she and her husband have scaled back their creative cooking ideas in response to inflation. The couple has gone from regularly making ingredient-heavy meals like chicken cacciatore to relying on staples like tuna noodle casserole, she told The Journal.

"It's just egg noodles, canned tuna, canned cream of mushroom soup, onions and garlic," Sarah Smith told the newspaper. "It's not healthy, but it's food."

Bernard Brothman, a retired HR executive, told The Journal that he has upped his crop production in his community garden to supplement grocery store produce.

He spends about $200 on fertilizer and seeds for the food he grows but ultimately ends up saving hundreds of dollars on groceries when his kale, carrots, squash, and tomatoes are in season, Brothman said.

Other people are going back to basics, relying on the hunter-gatherer instincts of our ancestors.

Nancy Randall and her Houston family of six save money by harvesting their own food. They eat the deer they hunt and the fish they catch, typically bringing home eight deer a year, which they freeze and process into venison and tamales, Randall told The Journal.

The family can typically sustain themselves on the meat for the year and don't have to shell out for protein at the grocery store.

Other respondents said they combat rising prices by maximizing senior discounts and making a spreadsheet of their groceries and meals.

Earlier this month, BuzzFeed collected and published several Reddit responses and cost-saving hacks from frugal foodies. People suggested eliminating non-water beverages entirely, purchasing only store-brand or generic items, cutting out premade meals, creating a weekly menu, forgoing items like paper towels and ziplocks, using grocery store apps and online shopping to stay within budget, and only buying items on sale.
