Resort guide for Santa Eulalia, Ibiza

The third largest town on the island attracts holidaymakers with its broad beaches, a palm fringed promenade, a fantastic choice of restaurants and great shopping..

santa eulalia tourism

Santa Eulalia (Santa Eulària in Catalan) is the third largest town of Ibiza , popular with island residents, but also a much sought after resort by those desiring a quieter holiday , with many attractions for the more discerning visitor.

Promenades and beaches

The seafront promenade is the most prominent feature of the town, it spans the length of the wide, smoke-free beach , adorned with palm trees, miniature gardens and a large fountain . Facing the sea, walk along to the right to the Santa Eulalia Bay beach, where the only river in the Balearics runs into the sea.

A pretty, peaceful river-walk meanders up to a beautiful old stone bridge from the 18th century . Midway, a footbridge spanning the river gives onto another pretty paved walkway leading to the little beach of Calo de S'Alga at the neighbourhood of Siesta with its small-village atmosphere .

Restaurants and bars

There are two main streets in which you're bound to see lots of people. The tree-lined Calle San Jaime is the main street and is the daytime meeting place for the coffee and conversation cliques who meet at the tables of the cafes and restaurants to watch the world go by.

Backing onto San Jaime is Calle San Vicente, also known as " Restaurant Street ". Closed to traffic in the early evening, it is transformed into the living, breathing picture of an ideal Mediterranean scene . Chairs and tables, laughing flaneurs and diners, light, music and musicians appear, giving this picturesque street an  vibrant and warm atmosphere .

Shopping and markets

In the centre of the town a little rambla leads from the town hall to the sea, bright with flowering oleanders and hibiscus and colourful with the crafts of street vendors and exhibits of instant portrait painters, ending at the promenade, the fine white beach and the blue Mediterranean beyond.

Santa Eulalia also is a shopping paradise ; there are many small fashion boutiques, shoe shops with a wide selection, sportswear and lovely places with household and decorative items - and you are able to find real bargains here, prices are much lower than in the capital Ibiza Town.

The largest and most famous hippie markets of the island, Las Dalias near the village San Carlos and the Es Canar True Hippie Market  in the nearby resort of Es Caná, are also only a short taxi ride away.

Along the promenade, you pass a colourful array of restaurants and cafés , from the cheap 'n cheerful to international exclusive. To the left at the end on the promontory small ferries ply to nearby beaches, the hippy market in Es Caná, Ibiza Town and for day trips to our sister island of Formentera - or why not charter a boat yourself?

Just around from there is the impressive yacht marina , which has made Santa Eulalia one of the focal points of the Mediterranean wetset . This stylish area has become a favourite for dining, shopping, entertainment and the laid back nightlife of the resort.

There is a wide choice of activities available, from water sports on the beaches of Santa Eulalia and its neighbouring bays to some interesting excursions that explore the resort's beautiful surroundings , either on land or on water.

Santa Eulalia is the hub of a fascinating colony of talented people, many of them world famous . Local & countryside galleries and shops have the privilege of selling works by artists who exhibit in the world's capitals .

Nightlife in Santa Eulalia is more laid-back than in Ibiza Town or in the clubbing resorts Playa d'en Bossa and San Antonio. People go out for a nice meal , then stroll along the lovely promenade and maybe enjoy a drink in a bar   after .

There are some bars which offer live music and stay open until late, but normally people venture to the super-clubs around Ibiza Town for a night out. The only party venue near Santa Eulalia is Las Dalias on the way to San Carlos - here you find some interesting events, which are also very popular with the locals.

Read more in our Nightlife guide to Santa Eulalia .

What to see

Being one of the main towns on the island, Santa Eulalia del Río has a large number of touristic attractions that are certain to move visitors.

Here are some of the places you cannot miss out on:

Marina Santa Eulalia is located in a natural and unique enclave, only 14 kilometres from Ibiza town , surrounded by spectacular coves and mountains. It is definitely a fantastic plan to visit some of the nearby beaches and relax by sailing in the crystal clear waters. Moreover, in order to enjoy some leisure hours on land, the port has a complete commercial area that is nonetheless quiet. In fact, this is one of the towns, along with the northern part of the island, chosen by many locals to avoid the crowds in high season.

The promenade

For those who love walking and sunset strolls, this is undoubtedly a great option due to its important size, spaciousness, comfort, and beautiful beach views. It is perfect for families and couples who want to relax a bit after a long day under the sun by enjoying the great variety of places, restaurants and shops.

The Old Town

Santa Eulària des Riu not only has a key location next to some of the most gorgeous beaches and coves on the island, but also the town itself has a striking and distinctive old town to explore. The small Ibizan-style houses that have been adding one to another over the years have shaped the town around the church and are responsible today for the distinctive and special atmosphere present.

Santa Eulalia Church, ‘ Puig de Missa ’, is another of the most visited touristic spots in town. It is a dazzling fortress-temple with a tower dating 16th century and stunning views. It was built on the top of a hill with the same name and laid the foundation for the town to come about.

And finally, a place that you might not find in travel guides but that you should not overlook: Santa Eulària des Riu Pont Vell. Also known as Pont des Molins , it was the old main entrance to the village and a constant target for pirate looters, since it had easy access and was constantly used by peasants coming in and out. Today, those who cross it do so on foot and peacefully, since it is now a pedestrian bridge with the river flowing under .

This image offers a wonderful and hassle-free walk that can be enjoyed as a family, along its bank. In fact, Santa Eularia is one of the towns in Ibiza that can be proud of having one of the best settings to walk on the island. The fact is that there are not many places where you can start a walking route by contemplating Mediterranean beaches and finish the tour inland on the banks of a river.

Cycle routes

Bicycle tourism is increasingly becoming the preferred activity on the island for many visitors and as it happens, Santa Eulalia has various cycle routes. They are in a privileged natural environment and allow you to get to know Ibiza from a different and more personal angle.

Where to eat

It is true that Santa Eulalia has a wide selection of restaurants, offering gastronomy of all kinds. Without a doubt, the town stands out for its restaurants and local bars serving typical Ibizan food that will make your day. Santa Eulalia del Rio is the third most populous city of Ibiza and is located east of the island, just 14 km from the capital city of Ibiza.

This town has always been characterized by family friendly tourism, further away from mass tourism and the party style of Ibiza and San Antoni. It has the recognition and reputation of being a good gastronomic and cultural destination, with a great variety of restaurants, shops and an exclusive marina with large yachts.

This town owes its name to the river that empties into the township (today it is almost always dry) and also has the feature of being the only river in the island.

This is the most important monument of the town, Santa Eulalia church its located on the top of the Puig de Missa mountain, a temple-fortress that occupies the top of the village from where they defended from Berber attacks and also served as a religious temple. The inside of the fortified church is dominated by the baroque altar, which was brought time ago from San Millán in Segovia over the sea. You will look in vain for further ornaments or splendor in this church

Next to the church we also find the ethnographic museum, the Museo Barrau, a small cemetery and the small network of simple streets and cobblestone streets typical of the island that once formed the core of the town houses. Today the heart of Santa Eulalia is located along the promenade in the tourist area.

Hippie Markets in Santa Eulalia

Santa Eulalia also has the attraction of having two of the best hippy markets of the island, which are the Dalies and Punta Arabi markets. More than 40 years ago, when Ibiza was still unknown to mass tourism, it was where the first hippies came to the island attracted by its beautiful beaches, magical places and the friendliness of its people. Back in the 70s when the first stands were set up, there were just 4 or 5 places to attract the few tourists who came to the island and sell their handicrafts. The market grew enough until our days and have become a real symbol of the island, known and recognized throughout the world, with more than 500 seats for the thousands of tourists that visit. Offering food, crafts, clothing, footwear, jewelry, works of art, and concerts, these markets are a real spectacle in themselves.

We have a thrilling voyage to tell you. Care to come along?

Many are the steps that have brought Santa Eulària des Riu to where she is now, from the first prehistoric dwellers to the melting pot of nationalities that today reside in our municipality. Discover our history. Follow the footsteps that came before you on your journey to here. And then sit and listen to the fabulous legends populated by the imps and pixies of Ibiza.

Each stage of development, since the earliest Bronze Age dwellers through to the modern arrival of tourism, has moulded our municipality. Its amazing history goes beyond books to encompass our cornfields with their carved terraces, their oil presses, their mills, their irrigation ditches and their watchtowers. Just as our houses and churches, conceived as fortresses, tell their own stories.

History of Santa Eulària and Ibiza: Life with an eye to the sea

The fact that so many different peoples have passed through our territory is not an accident. Ibiza’s strategic location in the Mediterranean Sea, closer to Algeria than to Barcelona, made it a perfect base for replenishing provisions, a circumstance which attracted the Phoenicians, who chose it as one of the bases on their trade routes thanks to the highly valued salt they obtained in its salt flats and were, in fact, the first people to exploit this resource commercially. The Romans also had their eye on Ibiza and called it Ebusus. From them we conserve certain remains in our municipality, such as the s’Argamassa aqueduct .

The three centuries during which the Moors occupied the island also left their mark on Santa Eulària des Riu, visible in the oil presses, irrigation channels, cisterns, water wheels and mills that still dot our countryside. Another agrarian jewel can be found in Ses Feixes, a direct legacy of Almoravid engineering. The name the Moors gave our territory, Xarc , which means east in Arabic, was carried over by the Catalonians when they conquered the island for the Crown of Aragon in the 13th century. That place name eventually became Quartó del Rei (Quarter of the King) and, over time has transformed again into Santa Eulària des Riu, the name of the first church, built next to the river but destroyed in one of the numerous pirate attacks that befell our coasts until the 17th century.

From the Catalan conquest to the present

Puig de Missa was raised with the aim of being an authentic fortress which could provide refuge against Turkish raids. Additionally, it guarded the watermills dotting the river banks, vital infrastructures for the production of bread, as you will be able to see for yourself if you visit the  River Interpretation Centre at Can Planetes . The houses that cluster round the church arose from the efforts at civic planning undertaken toward the end of the 18th century by Bishop Eustaquio de Azara, who proposed the creation of towns in order to offset the traditional demographic dispersion so characteristic of Ibiza. In this way, Santa Eulària , as we know it today, began to grow, although it would not be until the beginning of the 19th century that the main thoroughfares of Sant Jaume and s’Alamera came into existence.

As of the mid-20th century, the municipality began to connect with the outside world, largely as a result of young, moneyed travellers who arrived in search of inspiration for their creative endeavours and their lives in general. Artists, hippies, architects, designers, and disenchanted businessmen tired of the rat race began to drop anchor in Sant Carles de Peralta , Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera and other nearby places, thus giving rise to the cosmopolitan, bohemian milieu which has since characterized Santa Eulària des Riu, a municipality that is always alive and always moving forward, step by step.

Legends of Ibiza: Our pixies are playful; take care you don’t take one of them back in your suitcase…

Mischievous, troublesome, hardworking, gluttonous, edgy… That’s what the imps of Ibiza are like, products of a supernatural inheritance that came with the Catalan Conquest and whose imaginary beings are thought to derive originally from Roman culture. In island superstition, the most popular of these beings is the fameliar , represented in the form of a little bald man with a big head and small extremities. His main value resides in his extraordinary capacity for work, for he is able to accomplish the most laborious farming tasks in a matter of hours. On the other hand, however, he can also be the ruin of the household due to his voracious appetite, which is activated any time he stops working. This is why, as legend has it, he was always given jobs that were impossible to complete.

Tradition holds that, in order to obtain one of these little imps, one must go to wait under the old bridge of Santa Eulària des Riu , on the night of Saint John, until a flower began to grow. Said flower then had to be cut and put inside a black bottle. There it would stay until the farmer needed its help. If you want to learn more about this singular spirit, you can follow Santa Eulària’s River Route , where you will be guided by none other than a fameliar . You can also find one of these naughty nixies in front of the Town Hall, where he is sitting on a rock.

The barruguet, a gremlin with his own festival

Equally impish by temperament, the barruguet , is a small creature with an active mind whose fun consists in playing pranks in the domestic realm, perhaps throwing ash into a cooking pot, hanging off the well bucket, or making the children cry. He is so fondly regarded in Santa Eulària des Riu that one of the municipality’s most important cultural events bears his name: the Barruguet Family Theatre Festival , a series of shows and performances aimed at children – and grown-ups – held every year on the fourth weekend in May. And, since three’s a charm, there is also a third magical being who inhabits the legends of Santa Eulària: the follet , an invisible spirit with a restless character who purportedly enabled people to transit from place to place without being seen, quite similar to an analogous entity also present in French and Italian folklore.

Santa Eulalia: an encounter with adventure and nature a few hours from Lima

santa eulalia tourism

Those who prefer warm days should visit Santa Eulalia , in the province of Huarochirí. How to get? First head to Chosica: take a combi for S/3.50 at the Santa Anita bridge or at Paseo Colón. It will take two hours. Another more comfortable and faster option (one hour) is to get around in a collective taxi. You can find them at the intersection of Javier Prado and Arequipa avenues (S/10) or at the Santa Anita bridge (S/8). Once in the central park of Chosica, any bus will take you to Santa Eulalia for S/1.

In addition to its landscapes, this setting is known for its possibilities for adventure. Here the Autisha canyon and the bridge of the same name are located, where you can practice rappelling and descend 200 m, or go underground trekking to the Autisha waterfall. If you are not afraid of heights, opt for bungee jumping and free yourself from stress. Free fall is almost 20m! In Bungee Jumping Peru the jump plus the trekking costs S/170, an amount that includes round trip transportation from Lima, guides and professional equipment.

Bird watching is another attraction in the Santa Eulalia canyon: you will see the Andean condor. Finally, on the route, you will be able to enjoy the view of the river and the vegetation that surrounds it.

Where is Santa Eulalia located?

Santa Eulalia is one of the 32 districts that are part of the province of Huarochirí, belonging to the department of Lima . It is located at kilometer 38 of the central highway and has an altitude of 1035 meters above sea level.

Santa Eulalia Huarochiri

How to get to Santa Eulalia?

To go to Santa Eulalia, you can do it by bus or by private car.

Go by car: If you want to arrive in your own car, you must go through the central highway to Chosica. At kilometer 38 you will find the detour on the left and in a few minutes you will find the main square of the town. This journey can take between an hour and a half or two hours from Lima.

Go by bus: you must take the well-known "chosicanos" at the stops of Paseo Colón, Alfonso Ugarte avenue, Víaexpress Grau or in the Óvalo de Santa Anita, which will leave you at Parque Echenique where you can take a taxi or a mototaxi to take you to the town of Santa Eulalia.

What to visit in Santa Eulalia?

  • In addition to its beautiful landscapes that invite peace, Santa Eulalia is recognized for being a place where you can live many adventures.
  • Visit the Autisha Canyon and the bridge in the same place to practice rappelling or go trekking to see the Autisha waterfall.
  • Practice fishing for trout and pejerreyes in the Santa Eulalia River.
  • With the children you can go hiking, mountain biking and even camping on slightly longer journeys.
  • In the Santa Eulalia canyon, you can go bird watching, especially condors in the morning hours and, on the road, enjoy the landscape offered by the river and the vegetation that surrounds it.
  • The ice route is a road used since Inca times to transport refrigerated food from the Cordillera de Huarochiri to Lima. It is ideal for trekking.
  • The Vista Alegre Lithic Park, imposing and all carved in stone, ideal to visit with the family.
  • Marcahuasi, a stone forest, a wonderful landscape.

If you are one of the people who are looking for rest and calm, in Santa Eulalia the landscape is ideal for it, with many recreational spaces with swimming pools, restaurants and recreation areas to relax.

What are your archeological zones par excellence?

Gastronomic Recommendations:

In Santa Eulalia you cannot stop eating Pachamanca, it is one of the best in Peru. As a curious fact, in 2001 Santa Eulalia won the Guinness Record for making the largest pachamanca in the world: seven thousand portions.

As you will see, in Santa Eulalia there are many activities and entertainment for the whole family, from the most adventurous to the most sedate, making it one of the favorite tourist destinations for those who are near Lima. Did you cheer up?

From Holiday Homes Peru, we invite you to visit two of the spectacular accommodations that we offer in this area to make your rest days an unforgettable experience: Rentals in Santa Eulalia.

Where to stay?

The night in the double suite of Rustica Hotels is worth S/199. A cheaper option is The Inka Palace Resort, near the Plaza de Armas. The cost per room is S/120 and includes breakfast.

Where to eat?

Try the pig in the chola box (pork + potato + corn + wild banana + sarza criolla) for S/39 at El Paraíso Huanca.

Another option is the pachamanca at La Olla de Barro restaurant, located three blocks from the Plaza de Armas.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.

Praia de Santa Eulália

Praia de Santa Eulália beach guide, how to get there and where to stay

Praia de Santa Eulália, Albufeira, Algarve

Surrounded by low cliffs and pine and palm trees , this is one of the greenest and most beautiful beaches in Albufeira. It’s popular but usually not as crowded as the famous Praia da Oura to the west and the beaches in the center of town. It’s mostly frequented by tourists staying at the hotels nearby, and can be quite wide at low tide, so there’s plenty of space.

Praia de Santa Eulália, Albufeira, Portugal

Like most others in town, it’s a Blue Flag beach, meaning it’s clean and safe. The sand is fine and golden, and the water is usually clear and calm. It’s good for swimming, and, as it’s not very deep by the shore, child-friendly . There’s lifeguard supervision in the summer, as well as parasols, sunbeds and boats for rent.

Santa Eulália Beach, Albufeira

There’s a traditional restaurant specializing in fresh and grilled fish, from where you can admire a view over the beach. For more views , walk over the cliffs.
