All the details you need to know about the scorpion kings summer tour coming near you.

Following the sold out opening show in Cape Town, the Scorpion Kings Summer Tour moves to Mbombela and East London this weekend.  The music festival targeting all corners of SA, kicked off in Cape Town this past Sunday with thousands of music fans in attendance at the Grand Arena at GrandWest. Alongside Scorpion Kings (Kabza De Small and  DJ Maphorisa), the Scorpion Kings Summer Tour features live performances from some of the country’s hottest artists across various music genres including amapiano and hiphop.  Cape Town crowd favourites included Daliwonga, Young Stunna, Felo Le Tee and Venom. Tashinga and Sowetos Finest also rocked the stage with Madumane & Band closing the show. This coming weekend will see the tour travel to Mbombela on Friday and East London on Sunday with a few local additions to the lineup in each city respectively. MBOMBELA

Sa: scorpion kings announce summer tour dates.

South African artists Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa have announced the remaining dates for their Scorpion Kings Summer Tour.

The tour continues in Bloemfontein, Polokwane, Johannesburg and Rustenburg from February to April. It follows the success of last year’s shows in Cape Town, Mbombela, East London and Kimberley.

The tour, which is supported by Amstel and MTV Base, will also feature performances from Daliwonga, Young Stunna, Visca, Felo Le Tee and Mas Musiq, among others.

Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa released their first joint project titled Scorpion Kings in 2019. It was followed by Piano Hub and Return of the Scorpion Kings that same year in October and November, respectively.  They released two other albums after that, Scorpion Kings Live (2020) and Rumble In The Jungle (2021), in which they teamed up with Congolese musician Tressor .

The duo has won several awards together and have performed outside South Africa.

Following the success of the Scorpion Kings LIVE Concert that took place in Pretoria this past July, founder of the show super DJ duo today confirmed the popular music showcase / festival will be touring all corners of South Africa over December, January and February. Partnering with one of SA’s leading event organizers G21 Live, Scorpion Kings Tour in association with Amstel kicks off in the mother city Cape Town on Sunday, 11th December at the Grand Arena, GrandWest and will conclude in Johannesburg on Saturday, 25th February at the Johannesburg Expo Centre Nasrec. The explosive music festival will also pass through major SA cities: Mbombela, East London, Kimberley, North West, Bloemfontein, Polokwane and Durban. Amapiano artists DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De aka ‘Scorpion Kings’ have sure kept Mzansi on their feet with amapiano having taken over the South African airway. The duo previously released three consecutive hugely successful projects in 2019, the self-titled Scorpion Kings, Piano Hub, and The Return of The Scorpion Kings. They have both carved their names in the amapiano genre.

In an interview with OkayAfrica, DJ Maphorisa detailed how he met Kabza De Small for the first time and they clicked. This comes after the duo collaborated on many projects calling themselves ‘Scorpion Kings’. Maphorisa said live gigs helped him evolve and stay on top of trends on the streets. “Before organising a gig, I would always ask: “Who’s popping? What’s going on? What’s new on the scene?” Once in 2018, before doing a show in Soweto, I asked, “Who’s upcoming?” And the streets responded with a conclusive, ‘Stokie and Kabza’. So I booked them. Kabza had a hot single at the time, ‘Umshove’ and I immediately suggested that we work together,” Maphorisa explained.

10 things to do in Moscow's Gorky Park

Gorky Park is once again one of the most popular walking and leisure places for Muscovites and it’s really busy on weekends. It's definitely one of the must-see sights of Moscow and locals would definitely recommend you visit it at least once. So what to do once you’re in Gorky Park? 

1. Walk with a view

Of course, walking is the main thing to do in any park. Gorky Park offers free entrance 24/7, which, by the way, is a disabled friendly space. The territory of the park is huge and combines several “mini-parks” inside along with a long walking path that lets you follow the Moskva River (just like in Scorpions' song!) and enjoy the river views and tour boats. At the same time, you can head deeper inside the park and take a stroll along its multiple paths.

And if you are ready for a longer walk to improve those results on your step tracker - take a stroll along the river from Muzeon Park through Gorky Park, and then Neskuchny Sad (literally “Not Boring Garden”), finishing at Vorobyovy Gory (“Sparrow Hills”). By the way, don’t worry about having to turn back after a long walk, because there are metro stations on either side of the park: ‘Park Kultury’ or ‘Okrtyabrskaya’ at one end and ‘Vorobyovy Gory’ at the other. 

2. Use free WI-FI

Moscow nowadays is more and more reminiscent of a city of the future, as it has every imaginable service working 24/7, an app for everything you could need, and free WI-FI just about everywhere, including Gorky Park. 

So why not take advantage of it by downloading an audio guide explaining you the history of Gorky Park during WWII , for instance, and add some additional educational value to your walk!

3. Rent a bike or do other sports

There is a long bike track that stretches along the Moskva River within Gorky Park and beyond. You can rent a bike, longboard, skateboard (or even a children’s buggy). You can download a handy cycle audio guide that can help you explore the territory better, with interesting facts about ponds, museums and the park’s many other attractions.

Gorky Park also offers lots of opportunities for other sports. There is an official Nike base that frequently arranges running clubs and workouts. There are also several playgrounds for football, basketball, as well as an extreme skate park. 

Surprisingly or not, you can also play petanque (boules) in Gorky Park. This game popular among retired French people became popular among hipsters, thanks to the former ‘La Boule’ cafe that set up a few lanes back in 2011 (another cafe has since opened at the same place called Cochonnet - Petanque & Fun Cafe).

Gorky Park these days has loads of food venues for any taste, from historical Soviet ice cream to modern street food, as well as plenty of sitdown restaurants. Try Greek Gyros, Vietnamiese ‘Bo’ street food, or just grab a coffee and croissant to go anywhere.

If you’d like to have dinner, choose a place with a view near one of the park’s ponds. You can find a grill restaurant called ‘Zharovnya’ next to the main entrance and Pioneer Pond or one of the many nice restaurants next to Golitsyn Pond: ‘Ostrovok’, ‘Pizzamento’, ‘Lebedinoye Ozero’ (literally “Swan Lake”) and others.

5. Explore Russian & Soviet history 

Gorky Park’s full title is ‘Central Park of Culture and Leisure named after Maksim Gorky’. It opened in 1928 and since 1932 has been named after the famous Soviet writer Maxim Gorky. The place was considered to be the main leisure area for citizens of the capital, and so, was arguably designed by the best architects. One just has to take a look at the magnificent entrance arch! (inside it you can find the Museum of Gorky Park history , while on top is an observation deck).

These days, it’s a modern and stylish park (reconstructed in 2011), but little interesting pockets of Soviet past can be found everywhere still. The park offers guided historical tours and other similar types of so-called “edutainment”. (check the events schedule on the park’s website ). If you head over to the adjacent park - Muzeon Park, you’ll find some nice sightseeing there - even a cemetery of old Soviet statues and busts, including ones of Lenin and Stalin, that were “sent to exile” here after the USSR collapsed.

6. Entertain your kids

Gorky Park has always been a family-friendly park and a favorite place for kids of all ages. You can find a lot of entertainment for kids near Pioneer Pond, including a nice carousel and a recently opened  playground. It is an entire mini-world, a cross between a jungle and an aqua park. There are lots of slides and monkey bars, where kids can climb and have fun on, including the ‘Mega swings’: 29 swings that rotate and move all the possible ways and display an awesome night light show.

7. Explore contemporary art

The park hosts the ‘Garage Museum for Contemporary Art’, which is probably the main and most famous institution of its type and founded back in 2008. It hosts large exhibitions of the world’s and Russia’s most interesting artists and runs a big educational program. 

The museum’s building also deserves your attention. It currently looks like a modern  polycarbonate construction. However, it was once an abandoned Soviet restaurant, which was reconstructed and redesigned by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, who preserved original Soviet elements, such as some mosaics - which you can explore once inside. 8. Go to the movies

In summer, Gorky Park has an open air cinema called ‘Pioneer’, which screens a lot of movies - from mainstream to art house. Some movies also have English subtitles. Check the schedule and book tickets in advance here .

Garage museum also has its own cinema called ‘Garage Screen’, which screens a wide range of films and documentaries devoted to art and hosts lectures from a variety of interesting speakers. Check the schedule here . 

9. Rent a boat 

Though you might have to stand in a long line to get a boat on weekends, it’s nice to be able to paddle a little in nature, while being in the middle of a megapolis! Both park’s ponds, Golitsyn (a bigger one) and Pioneer, offer boats and catamarans for rent at affordable prices (check them here ).

10. Skate the ice rink 

In winter, Gorky Park transforms into a wonderland with one of the most gorgeous ice skating rinks in the city. You can enjoy the additional music, New Year festive atmosphere - and mulled wine (just not on the ice!). There are also plenty of ice skate rental points and very comfortable and warm changing rooms.

Gorky Park and Sparrow Hills

The history of the gorky.

The park was built in Soviet times between the two world wars and named after the author Maxim Gorky at the time. Up until the turn of the century, the area not far from the center was only a residential area with huge estates and then, in the turmoil of the civil war and shortly afterwards, served as an illegal landfill where citizens and entrepreneurs disposed of their garbage. After intensive cleaning in the early communist years, the site was first used as an agricultural exhibition in the mid-1920s until the Moscow City Council decided to set up a park here that was accessible to all citizens of Moscow. After all, this was supposed to take a full ten years of construction. Throughout the entire Soviet period, the park was incredibly popular and familiar to every Soviet citizen, whether from Moscow or not.

Rebirth after basic renovation

However, after the end of the Soviet Union, the area fell into disrepair – cheap hustle and bustle like shooting booths and slowly rusting rides shaped the sad picture. Only outsiders got lost in the park, which lived more from its reputation than from the sad reality. Only with the fundamental and just as expensive renovation in 2011 did the Gorky become the park it was once loved by the locals. Especially the promenade along the river with its large sunbathing areas in summer and the numerous ice rinks for ice skating in winter now attract thousands of locals to Gorky every day. Countless food and café stands scattered across the site provide visitors with everything imaginable – from Georgian delicacies, a decent café to traditional Russian kvass, or ice cream and smoothies in summer.

Concerts, art and privacy place

Even bigger crowd pullers are just the concerts in the park and these have a long tradition here. In 2018 alone, David Guetta, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Killers and Lana del Rey performed numerous international music greats Open Air. But even outside the big events there is always something to see in the Gorky. The modern art center “Garage” (website https://garagemca.org/en ) in the park holds regular art and design exhibitions. In addition, the art center gave the park the largest children’s playground in all of Russia for its 90th birthday in 2018. Numerous play equipment, including 29 different swings alone, are the perfect place to spend a few hours with the youngsters. Pedal boats can also be rented at several locations in the park, for example at the Andreevsky ponds, which is also suitable for children. Sports courses for adults are held regularly in the park. From jogging to yoga or Pilates there are organized courses – beach volleyball fields, soccer fields and an open air fitness studio offer further opportunities to do sports. Afterwards, beer gardens invite you to linger – all of this happens primarily in the central part of Gorky Park, known as the Neskuchny Garden. Away from the central part: Muzeon and Sparrow Hills

In the section called Muzeon north of the Crimean Bridge there are over 1000 statues, Soviet monuments and modern art facilities. This open-air museum-like section of the Gorky invites you to take a walk that takes you past oversized and pompous Soviet busts as well as avant-garde art objects of the 21st century. Surrounded by statues of Lenin, this section looks partly surreal. The Stalin statue in particular, which had its nose removed, magically attracts visitors. For photographers, the sometimes slightly rusty busts and remains from the Soviet era offer great motifs. If you’d like to improve yourself as a promising photographer, you can even take a photography course in the park at Photoplay ( https://photoplay.ru/courses/workshop/photoplayatgorky.html ) At 2900 rubles, i.e. just under $ 41, this is significantly more affordable than comparable products in Asia or Australia. No wonder this section is considered an Instagram paradise for Moscow’s exploding hipster scene. Events are also held time and again in the Muzeon – for example, the warm months over and over here are held cinema screenings outdoors. Russian classics such as international cinema are shown. You have absolute peace in the Sparrow Hills, which also belong to the park but are spatially separated from the other part. About four kilometers further along the Moskva River out of town is this section of the Gorky Park, which is largely natural. There, just opposite the large Luzhniki Stadium on the other side of the Moskva River, where the Olympics and the World Cup finals have already taken place, there is another privacy place in the middle of Moscow. At the highest point of the Sparrow Hills, to which a cable car leads, you have a fantastic view of Moscow.
