Our holiday was great! We had a great experience!

Athens - Mykonos - Santorini - Crete Tour

Athens - Mykonos - Santorini - Crete

Athens and the Greek Islands Tour is fascinating. The trip ran as exactly as described except for a late transfer in Mykonos. It was our first trip with Eskapas but won't be the last one for sure. The islands were absolutely gorgeous and the hotels were nice too. We had a rental car for Crete and driving is a nice experience through Cretan villages and incredible beaches. There's so much rich history in GREECE , beautiful landscapes and very nice people. I and my wife loved it!!!! and you will absolutely love it!!

Cycladic Explorer: Athens - Mykonos - Santorini

Amazing experience! The island hopping package we booked was absolutely perfect! We chose to visit Athens, Santorini and Mykonos. we are really happy with the customer service, especially with ALEX, who responded and provided timely responses when any questions were raised. The transfers were on time waiting for us and the hotels were great, with only one exception. Titania hotel did not accommodate us according to our arrival at 8am after a long overnight flight, having young children, which really impacted us. The islands were absolutely amazing. Overall, everything was great. I wouldn’t change anything! Thank you very much Eskapas for this amazing experience!

Athens, Mykonos, Delos, Santorini & Heraklion(Crete), 11-Day tour Tour

Athens, Mykonos, Delos, Santorini & Heraklion(Crete), 11-Day tour

Overall I had a very good experience with Mazi Travel from beginning to end. Mazi’s reprensentative was very prompt to respond. All hotels were well located and clean. Two things that matters to me when I travel. I have also been provided a chauffeur for every transit which was very practical. Except for one time, the chauffeur did not show up and I had to take a cab, all other times they were punctual. The acropolis and Parthenon visit included was good as well as the Delos tour. I would have loved to stay one more night in Santorini instead of Mykonos since there was so much to see in Santorini. An included tour of Santorini would have been appreciated. I had to buy one myself and did’t regret it. I recommend none the less this Trip with Mazi Travel. I travelled alone and had lots of time on my own to do whatever I wanted. I think that kind of tour is well balanced were some things are taken care of(ship transfer, hotel, some inclusions) so you don’t have to worry. TourRadar is also easy to use with lots of options and tour companies I will use this site for my next trip.

3 Day Island Tour: Santorini, Mykonos to Explore the Best of Cyclades Tour

3 Day Island Tour: Santorini, Mykonos to Explore the Best of Cyclades

All of the tour operators weee extremely nice. However, the sunset cruise was not what we expected. It was much longer than it needed to be, and took up time we could have spent exploring other areas of Santorini. Mykonos was amazing and very laid back and we loved having time on our own to do what we wanted to do.

Athens, Delphi & Greek Islands By Cruise - 5 Days Tour

Athens, Delphi & Greek Islands By Cruise - 5 Days

Yes tour was excellent only minor problems regarding crowding not able to get into Delphi museum . Whilst tour guides were proficient in detail of explanation there was too much detail and too much time spent explaing superfluous information ... this could have been better used viewing more items ... A little more time in Hydra as thus was too quick I recall only 30 minutes ...an hour would have been better and not delayed arrival back to Athens .only 30 minutes more. Overall excellent organisation pick ups drop off's and transfers were appreciated. Thankyou so muck for arranging all professionally. Edward Cioffi.

What people love about Island Hopping Tours in Greece

El mejor viaje y el mejor tour con Elias ? muchísimas gracias!!!!
This package allows you to experience the bustling city life in Athens, the serene beaches the traditional atmosphere of Paros, and the enchanting beauty of Santorini. Also Travel Zone have booked a hotel in a great location. The Astor in Athens is an old historical building close to the most important thing to do in Athens. Pyrgaki Hotel had a warm and cozy atmosphere that made us feel at home. Finally the Aegean Plaza in Santorini offered one ofyhd friendly and attentive service we have experienced. A big thanks goes to our operator Dilimar for making our trip a great.
Everything went very smoothly and communication with Private Tours of Greece was great.

Extension Style

Best time for travel greece island hopper featuring athens, mykonos and santorini.

While just about any month is great to visit Greece, there are a few prime times of the year for the Greece Island Hopper tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Spring: Santorini, Mykonos, and other Greek islands open to tourists in mid- to late April. While the weather is mild, most find the beaches are still chilly for swimming or sunbathing. Minimal crowds yield maximum photo opportunities.

Summer: July and August in Greece are hot! (In extreme heat, it’s possible for the Acropolis to be closed during the hottest hours of the day to protect workers and visitors.) During the summer season, tours only run in early July and late August, when temperatures aren’t as extreme. It’s during these months when many Greeks and other Europeans vacation here, too, making it a busy time to visit.

Fall: With kids back to school, September and October are great times to go on tour. Greece remains very busy, as the tourist season on Santorini and Mykonos extends into October, and the water temperatures offer perfect swimming conditions. There may still be crowds at the Acropolis and other popular sites along the way.

On Tour Air Included

  • The cost of all internal flights on tour or within an extension are included into the total tour cost on our website and brochures.
  • Purchasing internal flights through Collette is now required on tours where applicable.
  • This price continues to exclude all round-trip air getting to and from the tour, as well as any additional air segments required to arrive at or depart from an extension.
  • The cost displayed is based on availability at the time of booking.

From the towering Hagia Sophia to the lively Grand Bazaar and Spice Market, you’ll find an indescribable blend of nostalgia and modernity. Full of authentic flavors and legendary cultures, a trip to Turkey is not one you’ll soon forget.

  • Athens - Istanbul, Turkey
  • Fly to Istanbul,* Turkey’s most popular city. Considered to be the bridge between the East and the West, Istanbul is a central hub for intermingling cultures, complicated history, and legendary architecture. The city was the former capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires – which is seen through its blend of times-gone-by nostalgia and ever-evolving modernity. This evening, kick-start your exploration of Istanbul by sampling Turkish cuisine during dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Discover the city with a local guide. Start your morning at the famous Hagia Sophia, the Church of the Holy Wisdom. At the time it was built, this massive cathedral was the largest in the world. Continue on to the Blue Mosque,** where vibrant blue tiles line the building’s opulent interior walls. Immerse yourself in the flavors of the Cycladic Islands during a tour of Mykonos’ culinary gems. Begin the morning at a local farm where you learn about the traditions and history of cheese making, a craft that in Mykonos achieves almost the status of a local art form with secrets passed down through the generations. Sample Xinotiro, Kopanisti, and Vrasto cheeses and freshly-made yogurt, all produced at the farm. Later, explore more flavors of the island at a local bakery before visiting Ano Mera, a traditional rural village with picturesque whitewashed chapels and iconic blue trimmings.

Make the most of a day at leisure and see all that Greece has to offer with an island-hopping adventure! Set sail for the tiny islet of Nea Kameni – an uninhabited island that is formed on an active volcano. Make your way up the side of the still-active volcano with your local guide, pausing at the top of the crater for unparalleled views. After exploring, return to the boat to set off for your next destination – Palea Kameni. Similar to Nea Kameni, this islet is also of volcanic descent. Jump into the water and swim to the island’s rejuvenating hot springs, where you will find ethereal sulfuric waters and therapeutic mud - or choose to relax on the boat. Continue on to Thirassia, an authentic island that embodies the traditional culture of Greece. Enjoy a Greek buffet onboard and take in an unparalleled view of the island as you dine. After dinner, make a stop close to Oia as the sun sets. Marvel as the sky turns shades of orange and gold before sailing back to port.

Take a step into the past with a half-day excursion to the island of Delos, the fabled birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. After a quick 30-minute boat ride, allow your guide to introduce you to this sprawling UNESCO site. See how the Greek myths intertwine with prehistoric ruins, passing through narrow streets from the Hellenistic age. Tour the awe-inspiring House of Dionysus, a relic from the 4th-century BC containing ancient mosaics and preserved columns. Peruse the Temple of Apollo, the Sacred Lake, and the guardian Naxian Lions with your guide before enjoying time to explore independently. Take in views of the Sacred Island of Delos as you ferry back to Mykonos.

Join a local expert in Athens and explore the city's world-renowned sites.

In the sun-drenched islands of Greece, it is easy to get lost in the deep azure blue of the Aegean Sea and the postcard perfect viewpoints that arrive around every corner. But if you join one of our Greek Island hopping tours, you will see a side of Greece that is multifaceted and utterly interesting.

From the ancient port town of Athens, our Greek Island hopping tours start with an introduction to a history so grand that its impact is still felt to this day. Everything from democracy to philosophy, architecture to the arts has been influenced by this great city. No place is more apparent to this historical importance than the Acropolis, and our Greek Island hopping tours start with a guided journey through buildings erected as early as the 5th century BC. Discover where the great works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes were first performed while touring the Dionysus Theatre. From the classical age of Greece, to the Roman and Byzantine times, Athens has been the centre of it all for thousands of years.

Wandering away from the cobblestone centre, our Greek Island hopping tours will head to the port and venture aboard a Greek ferry to whisk us away to the beautiful and idyllic Greek Isles. While on the islands, our guided tours of Greece are at a relaxed pace to allow our group time to enjoy the splendours of history, gain valuable insights into Greek culture, taste the delicious cuisine from local restaurants, but also enough time to reflect on the magnificent journey and have some independent explorations.

Many of the towns we visit are as scenic as they are serene. Whitewashed buildings concealing dozens of little shrines, chapels, and churches look out onto breezy harbour fronts and sandy shorelines. Even though our Greek Island hopping tours take us far from the mainland, history and folklore has a way of weaving into these sacred islands. On the tiny island of Delos, we join our local guide for a tour of the sanctuary which was once the religious and political capital of the Cyclades for nearly 1000 years. Merchants and mariners from as far as Syria and Egypt once ventured to this tiny island, and a visit to the theatre which once held 5,500 people in one sitting allows us to imagine how populated and important this place once was.

From morning to sunset, each day on our Greek Island hopping tours offers photographers something to see. Perhaps no sunset is more picturesque than the one we will experience in Santorini. Overlooking the tiny villages that surround Santorini's caldera, the sky here turns a magnificent array of colours that leave all travellers in awe. One look and it is easy to understand how these small villages such as Oia have inspired many generations of artists.

It may be the attractive scenes of Greece that lured you in, or perhaps the sweeping legacies and culture, but it the combination of both which makes Greece so special.

Prices below are per person , twin-sharing costs in Canadian Dollars (CAD) . Pricing does not include airfare to/from the tour and any applicable taxes. Day 1 Arrival in Athens Today we arrive in Athens, the capital of Greece and the historical capital of Europe. The city has a long history dating from the first settlement in the Neolithic age; in the 5th Century BC, the city’s values and civilization acquired a universal significance. In 1834, it became the capital of the modern Greek state and an attractive modern metropolis with unrivalled charm. Overnight in Athens. Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Athens: City Touring Today we enjoy a guided tour of Athens, the heart and soul of Greece.* A large part of the town's historic centre has been converted into a 3-kilometre pedestrian zone (one of the largest in Europe), leading to the major archaeological sites, reconstructing -- to a large degree -- the ancient landscape, thus allowing us to avoid the city's horrendous traffic. We start at the Acropolis (with hopes to beat the heat/crowds), near the site of the Dionysos Theatre. Constructed in the 6th century BC, it is one of the world's oldest theatres and the place where the great works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes were first performed. We will also see a more recent theatre, the Odeon of Herod Atticus from the second century AD, which is still used for concerts and performances. Ascending to the top of the Acropolis, we will see magnificent buildings dating from the 5th century BC, the Golden Age of Athens. On the highest point on the Acropolis is the Parthenon, often considered the finest monument to Greek civilization. The temple was dedicated to Athena "Parthenos," the virgin and patron goddess of the city. After our Acropolis tour, we'll descend and enter the Ancient Agora located adjacent to the Plaka, the old town of Athens. Among the numerous sights in this archaeological park are the well-preserved Temple of Hephaistos and the landmark Roman era Tower of the Winds. Our guided tour ends with a guided visit of the Acropolis Museum, located at the foot of the Acropolis. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece; nearly 4,000 objects are exhibited over an area of 14,000 square metres. After our tour you are free to wander and explore on your own or make your way back to the hotel with your Tour Leader's assistance. * The exact order of our sightseeing in Athens may be altered by your Tour Leader depending on several variables and their judgement on how best to run today's tour. Overnight in Athens. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Athens - Ferry to Mykonos Early this morning we travel by local ferry from Athens' port, Pireaus, to the island of Mykonos.* From the harbour waterfront, you can watch the local fishing boats, or venture into the labyrinth of dazzling, white-washed streets to the many churches, tavernas, or shops selling artisan crafts. In the distance stand a string of windmills that once harnessed the breezes of days gone by. The sugar cube buildings are stacked around a cluster of seafront fishermen's dwellings. The labyrinth design was intended to confuse the pirates who plagued Mykonos in the eighteenth and 19th centuries. The whitewashed houses concealing dozens of little churches, shrines and chapels. * PORTERS ARE GENERALLY NOT AVAILABLE ON THE GREEK ISLES, OR ON FERRIES BETWEEN THEM. You MUST be able to carry / wheel your baggage on and off ferries. Overnight on Mykonos. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 4 Mykonos: Walking Tour & Boat Trip to Delos This morning we'll take you on an orientation walking tour of Mykonos Chora. We wander the pirate-proof streets of town and see the Paraportiani Church near the quay, an architectural masterpiece of five chapels in one. We then meet the boat that will take us to the tiny sacred island of Delos (40 minutes away). Delos gives the whole group of islands surrounding it their name, the Cyclades -- so named because they form a circle (kyklos) around Delos. For nearly 1,000 years this sanctuary was the political and religious centre of the Aegean. Leto, pregnant by Zeus, gave birth to the twins Apollo and Artemis on Delos. In the 18th century BC, the annual Delia Festival was established on the island to celebrate the birth of Apollo. Delos was populated during its height in Hellenistic times with wealthy merchants, mariners and bankers from as far away as Egypt and Syria. During our guided walking tour of Delos, we will see the Agora of the Competialists, Roman merchants or freed slaves who worshipped the guardian spirits of crossroads; the Sanctuary of Apollo, the three temples of Apollo and the Sanctuary of Dionysus. In the House of the Masks we are able to see a mosaic portraying Dionysus riding on a panthers back. The theatre here could seat 5,500 people. We return to Mykonos where you will have free time to explore Mykonos town on your own. Overnight on Mykonos. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5 Mykonos - Ferry to Santorini Today we take a ferry or hydrofoil (depending on scheduling) to the island of Santorini. Vast geological upheavals have given this island its unique form resulting in the nickname, "Pre-Historic Pompeii." The effect of terracing makes this unlike any other island, Greece's most visually stunning. Santorini is the island of churches, wine, and donkeys! From as early as 3000 BC the island developed as an outpost of Minoan civilization until around 1650 BC when the volcano erupted. At this point the island's history became linked with the legend of Atlantis. At some point in our visit, we'll stop in at the The Museum of Prehistoric Thera. It was built on the site of the old Ypapanti Church, destroyed in the 1956 earthquake. The museum houses a very large number of ancient artifacts from various excavations on Santorini, such as at Akrotiri and at the nearby Potamos site. Overnight on Santorini. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6 Santorini: Akrotiri & Island Tour Visually, Santorini is the most spectacular of the Cycladic islands. With its brilliant flooded caldera, high cliffs and charming villages, it is the Greek Isle of everyone's dreams. Our coach tour today will take us to Santorini's many highlights. We begin with a visit to Akrotiri for a thorough guided tour. Excavations have revealed a complete prehistoric Minoan city with squares, streets, and two-storey houses, which contained marvelous frescoes. The buildings date to the late 16th century BC. No skeletons or treasures have been found in Akrotiri, so historians think that the inhabitants were forewarned of the eruption and were able to escape. The excavations have yielded evidence that has revolutionized our knowledge of the Late Bronze Age; indeed the town has been called a "Bronze-age Pompeii." We will also visit the hilltop village of Pyrgos, once the capital of the island and home to more than 30 churches. The village is composed of traditional houses built around the Venetian Castle and the small streets follow the shape of the hill. Climbing from the square up to the castle of Pyrgos, the stone houses crowd more densely together within the labyrinth of narrow vaulted lanes. Our drive around the island will also take us up to the Prophet Elias Monastery built on the highest point of the island in 1711 AD. Though we will not visit inside the monastery, the view from here is breathtaking. Fira is the capital of the island and the most important village. Perched on the edge of an impressive cliff 260m high, the town offers great panoramic views over the submerged volcano. Here the small streets are filled with all kind of shops, cafes, and restaurants. After an orientation walk through the town, you might choose to visit the impressive Archaeological Museum in your spare time (optional). This museum features many artifacts dating back to the time of the Cycladic Civilization. The most impressive legacies of this civilization are the statuettes carved from Parian marble -- the famous Cycladic figurines. Like statuettes of Neolithic times they depicted images of the Great Mother. Other remains include bronze and obsidian tools and weapons, gold jewelry, and stone and clay vases and pots. Return to Kamari Beach (those who wish to extend their time in Fira can return to Kamari using the public bus system). Overnight on Santorini. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7 Santorini: Fira - Imerovigli - Oia / Free Afternoon This morning we will head to the small town of Oia, situated at the northern tip of the island. We start by taking the public bus to Fira, where we enjoy the stunning caldera views and dramatic setting. From here we will follow the scenic path along the vast caldera rim. Our route leads up through the village of Firostefani and brings us to the village of Imerovigi. The views are ever-changing as the perspective of the island changes minute by minute. We will look out to Skaros, the remains of a Venetian Castle built in 1207 by Marco Sanudo, the ruler of all Cyclades islands that time. From Imerovigli we will continue by bus to Oia (pronounced "EE-ah"). Built on a steep slope of the caldera, many of Oia's dwellings nestle in the niches hewn in the volcanic rock. This was once a major fishing port but is principally known these days as perhaps the most dramatically situated towns in the whole of Greece. The peak of prosperity for this small port town was reached in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At that time the locally based merchant fleet plied its trade in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially from Alexandria to Russia. The two-story captains' houses built on the highest part of the village are a reminder of the village's former affluence. Oia is a place where many artists have found their inspiration... and here we will wander the narrow streets and old ruins, and enjoy the stunning views of the caldera with panoramic views of the rest of Santorini and the Aegean Sea. After a break for lunch we will return back to Fira and Kamari. We then return to Kamari Beach (those who wish to extend their time in Oia or Fira can return to Kamari using the public bus system). The balance of your day is free to explore on your own, and your Tour Leader will assist with options. Perhaps enjoy some time on one of Santorini's famous black beaches, or hike up to the ruins of Ancient Thira. Overnight on Santorini. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8 Santorini - Fly to Athens Today we'll fly back to Athens,* aiming to have some free time in the city for some last minute shopping and/or sightseeing. * PLEASE NOTE: Ever-changing air schedules and weather delays may necessitate a return to Athens by ferry. Overnight in Athens. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 9 Departure Departure from Athens. KALO TAXIDI/BON VOYAGE! Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Inclusions Breakfast and dinner (mostly local restaurants) daily. All sightseeing and entrance fees for sites noted as 'visited' in the detailed itinerary. Gratuities for local guides, drivers, restaurant staff, porters. Airport transfers for land & air customers arriving/departing on tour dates.

Exclusions International airfare to/from the tour. Tour Leader gratuities, lunches, drinks, personal items (phone, laundry, etc), international air taxes (if applicable), and excursions referenced as 'optional'. Airport transfers for Land Only customers. Our post-reservation trip notes offer further guidance on optional meal costs and shopping.

Seasonality and Weather This tour is offered in spring, summer, and fall, the most popular being spring and fall when temperatures are milder, crowds thinner, and airfares lower. Spring is popular for green landscapes and wildflowers; beachgoers prefer fall sea temperatures. The region has a Mediterranean climate with early springs, long hot and dry summers, and autumns that are bright and warm into mid-October. Showers are possible in spring, rare in summer, and possible in late fall.

Transport and Travel Conditions This is not a cruise! We travel between islands via local ferries, which can range from hydrofoils to large vehicle carrying vessels. Greek ferry schedules tend to change without notice; some itinerary adjustments may be necessary at the discretion of your Tour Leader. Land transport (city & island tours, port transfers) by private air-conditioned motor coach, 24-36 seats depending on group size (see 'group size'); some local buses and taxis. Porter service is rarely available on the islands (see 'inclusions'); you MUST be independent with your luggage, especially getting on / off ferries. This trip is typical of most of our European tours, which are ambitious and involve full days of travel and sightseeing. While we don't have any actual strenuous activity (ie hiking) built into the program, you will do a lot of walking on this trip. These walks will mostly be in the form of walking tours of towns and cities and short walks to dinner. Being Europe, and a hilly/mountainous area, cobbles, uneven surfaces, and slopes/stairs are common. If you are accustomed to typical "bus tours," which rely heavily on vehicular transport for all sightseeing activities, you should be aware that this tour is considerably more active.

Am I suitable for this tour? Please refer to our self-assessment form .

Accommodation Well-located, air-conditioned, mid-range hotels (3-4 star) throughout. Island hotels are smaller properties (3-4 story) that will likely not have elevators. All hotels have en suite bath, though most have shower only. A special note about Santorini, which is primarily a luxury tourism destination and, while we can confidently promise our visit will be fulfilling and rewarding, one's hotel expectations must be in line with our overall purpose, which is sightseeing and cultural experience and not focused on the "hotel experience" per se. Single rooms are limited and likely smaller than twins.

Staff and Support Tour Leader throughout, driver (s), local step-on local guides in various locales.

Group Size Maximum 18 plus Tour Leader

greece island hopping tour

Spring is a fantastic time to go island hopping in Greece. April and May are true transition months, seeing temperatures rise from the high teens to the high twenties in just a matter of weeks. The best thing is that the summer crowds haven't yet appeared, which means it's a great opportunity to see more popular island-hopping stops – Mykonos, Santorini, Hydra – without oodles of people getting in the way.

The summer is the most popular time to go island hopping in Greece. It's easy to see why: Hot weather (we're talking highs in the 40s and average temps in the 30s) and almost endless sun from June to August. Thankfully, the Ionian and Aegean seas also get good cross winds that make sailing from island to island a cinch, even for inexperienced skippers. What's more, every island on your itinerary will be in full flow when the summer months are rolling. The parties in Ios will be off the hook. The chic eateries in Mykonos will all be open. The resort hotels of Crete will be raring to go.

Let's make it simple: Autumn is a downright stunning time to come to Greece. Virtually everywhere is still warm, but the mercury does slacken off a little to give more pleasant evenings. Averages are in the low- to mid-20s, and rains rarely come until the end of September. More than that, the colours on the mountains are a palette of ochre and red, while the seas are at their warmest (think 22 in the Aegean!).

It's not totally impossible to go Greek island hopping in the winter. However, it won't be easy. Lots of tour providers simply don't run between November and March. The weather is often too cold and the Aegean and Ionian seas can be downright rough to boot. More than that, there's a significant drop in the number of flights connecting up the islands, so you'll be relying on pricey connections that often go via Athens, which isn't ideal. If you're determined to come in winter, we'd recommend short-haul island-hopping itineraries around the Saronic Gulf. Islands there – Hydra, Poros, Aegina – always have some life.

The first step of any island-hopping odyssey through the Greek seas is getting to Greece in the first place. Thankfully, that's pretty easy – this is one of Europe's top holiday destinations, after all. Most people will jet in on one of the many low-cost flight links that come from major hubs on the continent. However, the options are endless, what with international bus and ferry connections also on the menu…

The vast majority of people will hop on a flight to get to Greece. There are hundreds of daily connections from all over Europe and beyond to this uber-popular vacation destination during the high-season months. What's more, there are more arrival points on offer than you can shake a bowl of tzatziki at, many of which get you straight out to the islands. Some of the most popular airports to land at for island hoppers are:

  • Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (in Athens) - The largest airport in Greece, and a good option for long-haul flight arrivals. A train from the terminal connects with the Athens Metro system for links to Piraeus port, which is the main hub of all inter-island ferries.
  • Santorini International Airport (in Santorini) - Start your island-hopping trip in style by flying straight into Santorini, one of the most dramatic spots in the Cyclades and a must on most itineraries.
  • Heraklion International Airport Nikos Kazantzakis (in Crete) - The busiest, but not the only, airport on Crete, Heraklion offers a gateway to the largest Greek island of all, where mountains and ancient Minoan sites abound. Starting here means your next leg will probably be a long boat link north to the Cyclades.
  • Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport (in Corfu) - Probably the main gateway to the western islands of the Ionian Sea, Corfu's airport is perfect for exploring places like Kefalonia, Ithaka, and Zante.

You've got two choices when it comes to planning that Greek island-hopping trip. You can either book onto a planned tour or go it alone. The first option keeps things simple. All you gotta' do is turn up, crack a Mythos beer, and settle in for the ride. The second option calls for a bit more organising, especially as you need to sort out getting from one island to the next. There are only really two options for that, though:

Greece has one of the most comprehensive ferry networks in the world. There are long-haul overnight boats that connect major destinations right down to tiny inter-island ferries that are no more than glorified fishing skiffs. Athens is very much the hub of the whole thing. Its huge – and ancient – port at Piraeus is the meeting point for most of the boats going across the Aegean Sea, as far as Rhodes and as close as Aegina. Other port towns offer steppingstones to different parts of Greece, like Igoumenitsa for the Ionian Islands and Thessaloniki for the northern Aegean.

On top of that, every individual island group usually has its own 'mini hub'. That allows for quick transfers onto smaller boats to lesser-known islands, for example from Paros (the mini hub of the Cyclades) to untrodden Koufonisia. It's always a good idea to plan island-hopping routes by looking at the map and checking the ferry links in that particular region. Picking stops along the same course means you won't have to double back on yourself and sailing legs are kept to a minimum.

It's also always wise to book tickets for Greek ferries in advance. They will sell out fast, especially on the most popular routes between the most popular islands (Santorini to Mykonos comes to mind!). Thankfully, you can now do all that online before you even jet off to the land of tzatziki and fava bean paste.

More recently, it's become possible to plan whole island-hopping trips using just flights. Obviously, this isn't ideal if you're watching your carbon output, but there is a plus side: It will let you see destinations in whole other regions that would be simply impossible to visit were you limited to boats. We're talking the white-pebble coves of Zante one day and the Turkic old towns of Rhodes the next, set more than 400 miles apart.

Not all islands can be reached by plane. In fact, only a select few have airports. They include Rhodes in the east, Crete (which has two airports, one in Chania and the other in Heraklion), Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Kos, Corfu, and Skiathos. Many of the flights to those will be seasonal, so don't expect an overload of choices past November time. What's more, you may need to fly via one of Greece's aviation hubs (Athens or Thessaloniki) to get from A to B.

Airlines that offer the best island-to-island flight connections in Greece include:

  • Aegean Airlines – The main Greek airline. Runs all year between the islands but routes often go via Athens.
  • Ryanair – A low-cost carrier that mainly specialises in flights into Greece from across Europe but does run some popular inter-island routes (ie. Santorini to Corfu).
  • Olympic Air – A subsidiary of Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air now offer lots of routes to lesser-known islands, although many will go via hubs like Athens.

greece island hopping tour

It's possible to hop islands in Greece for a weekend or a whole lifetime. However, between a week and 14 days is usually enough to showcase the highlights of the region and get a taste for what it means to whiz over the Aegean Sea between sunbaked bays and ouzo-soaked marina towns. That's why Med Experience focus on 9-day and 11-day itineraries for their Greek Island Hopping Tours for 18 - 39 year olds.

Our 11-day Greek island route begins in the immersive metropolis of Athens. There, you'll rub lines from the bucket list with glimpses of the Parthenon and a walking tour through the historic confines of Monastiraki Square. Day two is when the islands come into play with an arrival by ferry into Santorini, which greets you with its soaring cliffs and stunning villages that look like wisps of smoke overhead. Sunset viewing and gyros eating will ensue before the hop to Ios. That's where the island-hopping trip gets pretty wild, thanks to the wealth of pumping clubs and shot bars that exist in the Cyclades's top party destination. Paros follows. It's the perfect place to soothe the hangover, especially as we do a boat trip out to uber-remote Antiparos to seek deserted swimming coves. Then you head to Mykonos, to party on famous Paradise Beach before the return to Athens.

Our 9-day itinerary takes in the highlights of the Cyclades islands. Santorini kicks things off in grand style. There are loads of domestic flights and ferries heading there, but also plenty of low-cost carriers coming in from all over Europe. No matter how you arrive, the island is sure to wow with its vertical cliffs and carved volcanic center. This is where you'll meet your fellow travelers and explore the cobbled lanes of charming Fira Town. Then it's onto Ios, an island famed for its raucous nightlife, followed by Paros, where there's time to slow down, snorkel, and devour traditional Greek food on the promenade. The finale of the trip is over on Mykonos. It's an epic place where the good vibes roll, and you'll be staying on Paradise Beach, which is known for its pumping parties and clear seas.

One of the best ways to make sense of the 6,000 or more islands that speckle the seas around Greece is to break them into separate groups. Thankfully, that's already been done. Here are some of the most popular among island hoppers…

greece island hopping tour

Ah, the Cyclades. These are probably the most famous set of Greek isles out there. Scattered through the very middle of the Aegean Sea, they are known for their strange volcanic makeup. You get the uber-dramatic likes of Santorini here, where deluxe cave hotels peer over the cliffs. But you also get lesser-known gems like Milos, a land of carved white stone and crystal-clear snorkelling waters. Mykonos and Ios bring up the party side of things, while Naxos and Paxos are there for families. The variety makes it a top region for island hopping; one of the best of all.

There are just so many tempting destinations on the menu when it comes to Greek island hopping. In fact, half the planning is sometimes in deciding which isle is the most tempting of all, from the sheer-cut cliffs of Santorini to the goat-stamped gorges of Crete…

The poster boy for Greek island hopping, Santorini is a regular on travel brochures and postcards. It's a jaw-dropping place that was actually once a complete volcano cone. Ancient eruptions shattered it to pieces, though. What's left is an incredible crater flooded by the Aegean Sea, with cinnamon-hued cliffs rising vertically from the water to whitewashed towns. It's something everyone should see at least once.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration.

Explore six exquisite islands on this 10-day tour through the Cyclades and beyond. Each island has its own appeal, be it the quiet beaches on Naxos, Santorini’s whitewashed villages, the history of Crete, the waters around Elafonisi, chic Mykonos, or the archaeological Delos. Handcrafted to provide the complete island hopping experience for those relatively short on time, these are ten days of endless highlights and impressions. And just like the Aegean Sea, it’s as laid-back as it can be.

Customizable Itinerary

Mykonos – windmills, villages and sunset.

Mykonos looks like a vacation everywhere you turn. Blissful Aegean waters surround the island, so calm and peaceful until they dramatically reflect sunset hues. The villages are small and mazy, with hardly any of the streets wide enough for motorized vehicles. Most of the hills are lush and rugged, their green colors complementing the sea. There are beaches, a classic vacation image, along with sights that prove you are very far from home – the Hora windmills just one example. Mykonos has an international airport, so you fly directly into the Cyclades. Within an hour of landing, you will have checked into a boutique hotel in Hora, the main Mykonos town.

From your suite, you can gaze over the Aegean for your first glance of what this island hopping tour will be about. The afternoon will be at your leisure, and it is easy to get around the key Mykonos highlights. Take a walk through the town, your footsteps on cobbles as you come across small cafes and restaurants. Head out to the windmills for the famous Mykonos photo, and then keep walking a little further for some initial beach time. Head back to the hotel for sunset as you have a perfect view from your suite, before checking out the chic, indulgent atmosphere that dominates a Mykonos evening.

What's Included:

Mykonos – The Archaeological Wonder of Delos

At first, Delos appears to be a classic Greek island. Your boat will drop anchor in a quiet blue bay alongside golden sand and a rugged cliff-lined backdrop. Jump in for a swim and all is how it is supposed to be. But you are not visiting Delos for the swimming, as you will step onto the island to enter the mythologized birthplace of Greek gods. Apollo and Poseidon have their stories here, along with other legendary names like Artemis. Delos was a myth at first, but a handful of the archaeological remains point to its godly past, these best understood in the excellent Archaeological Museum of Delos.

Your local guide will provide eye-opening stories as you move back outside and connect the centuries. Delos rose to become the world’s most important trading center, around 400 – 300 BC. Amid the vast archaeological ruins, you will find an avenue of sculpted lions. Around the Delos summit, you can look down on temples and Corinthian columns. At the Temple of Hercules and House of Cleopatra, you can trace the Delos history between civilizations. There are many Hellenistic remains, some of them relatively new as they only show two millennia of history. Delos is the most important Greek historical site outside Athens, and you can spend the whole day on the island before returning to Mykonos and a different side to Greece.

Naxos – Relaxing on a Mostly Undiscovered Island

On the fast catamaran, you will cruise to Naxos and its largest village, Chora. Barely 5,000 people live on the entire island, and you will soon find yourself alone on the coast. The wind whispers softly in your ear, there is sand between your toes, and the waters are fresh, more like a lagoon than a sea. Naxos is a mostly undiscovered island, passed over by almost everyone visiting the Cyclades. What it does not have in terms of tourist-focused restaurants, it makes up for in pure serenity and tradition. This is where the menus do not come in English, and the coastline is not populated by superyachts.

This will be an island escape, made all the better by the lack of crowds. So take your time, take a stroll, relax on a beach, and wile away an evening in one of the tavernas. Then wake up the next morning and do the same again. A stop in Naxos is a chance to explore what the Greek islands used to be before they grew popular with tourists over the eighties and nineties. You will enjoy this island as you meet the locals, dine beneath clear skies, take a hike to hidden beaches, and indulge with the many small pleasures.

Santorini – Wandering Villages and Vineyards

Keep cruising, continuing on the same Cyclades ferry route that connects Mykonos with Santorini. You will disembark and transfer to Oia, the largest and the most charming of the island’s villages. Accommodation is hard to come by here, which means it’s mostly visited by day-trippers, especially those who come for the world-famous sunsets. You will have a jacuzzi suite overlooking the sunset, a place of tranquility for watching a whitewashed facade change color with the sun. Oia is also a good place to start your guided Santorini exploration, the guide telling you why the church domes and window shutters are painted blue.

It can be cool on these cobbled streets, most of them in shadow for most of the day. From Oia. you then ascend onto rugged hills, with a short drive bringing you to a patchwork of olive groves and vineyards. Go on a food and wine tasting tour, with many local delicacies experienced in just two hours, before continuing to the village of Fira. Like Oia, this is another mazy place where you are guided by sounds and smells, as well as the sights. The tour ends here, and you may choose to walk back to Oia, along a famous cliffside path. But of course, you might want to be back in Oia quickly, meaning more time to enjoy the jacuzzi sunset.

Santorini – Catamaran Sailing, Ancient Ruins and Another Iconic Sunset

Santorini has many secrets, but it is only a small island. Unlike Crete or Mykonos, you can get around everything in just a couple of days. So head off with your guide and feast on the ruins, an excavated city your first stop today. Travel to the unusual red and black beaches, not really places to sunbathe but destinations to appreciate the diversity of nature. Grab lunch in the island’s highest village, the blue and white facade complemented by volcano views, and then walk off the indulgent food on a volcano. If you are feeling adventurous, then it is possible to walk to the volcano’s conical summit. But just a few steps on the rugged slopes may be enough. Take it slow in the afternoon, and watch that sunset once more.

Santorini – An Afternoon of Cruising Around Santorini

Enjoy a relaxed morning on the Greek islands, drinking your morning coffee with a view and a quiet walk through a whitewashed town. This afternoon you can set off on a small-group catamaran sailing cruise. Rest on the deck as turquoise waters extend in all directions. Jump off at quiet swimming spots, beneath the entrances to cliffside caves. Cruise alongside the cliffs, gazing up at the villages you explored yesterday, and then stay out for sunset, a different perspective as the catamaran glides back to port. Like yesterday, you will find Oia to have many excellent dining spots this evening, from coastal seafood restaurants to small local haunts within the maze.

Crete – From Minoan to Venetian Histories

Crete is an island of convoluted and complex history. Take the fast boat to Heraklion, and you can step back to the time of early Minoan culture, Crete being the island from which this civilization spread. Vast crumbling ruins are found in Knossos, including a palace that really evokes ancient power. The world’s greatest collection of Minoan art is found at the nearby archaeological museum, from vases to sculptures and surreal friezes. Then you step forward into a medieval period, jumping the classical times to explore old town Heraklion. It’s here that you find a vast fortress and colorful cobbled lanes, along with all the tradition that’s been taken forward into the 21st century.

Heraklion is ugly at first glance but beautiful with a local guide. You must sidestep the busy streets and know how to enter the old town, where there is respite from noise and many cafe terraces. After lunch, it’s a two-hour transfer along the coast to Chania, where the style is intimately Venetian. Chania was an integral part of the Venetian Republic, and the avenues have an artisanal style, with colorful townhouses lining the water and gastronomy that straddles nations and eras. After a busy day of historical sites, Chania is good for self-exploration, especially in the early evening. You can walk without a map and without a plan, enjoying whatever Venetian remains you stumble upon.

Crete – The Clearest Waters in Europe on a Elafonisi Day Trip

Elafonisi appears to be more Caribbean than European, the color of the water like something from a dream. When the sun shines, the water is more translucent than turquoise, as if the Aegean coast houses jewels instead of sand. Take a day trip here, and you bask in the tranquility. Mountain streams and rugged vistas dominate the morning, a road taking you through the remote landscapes of southwestern Crete. Follow a green coastline then stop in the tiny village of Topolia, a starting point for finding a church in the middle of a dripstone cave.

Head back towards the water, and the ineffable colors take over. A shimmering pink beach is back-dropped by pine and juniper covered dunes. From here, the translucent lagoon extends, and you will walk to Elafonisi, spending the whole afternoon on the island’s white-sand beaches. There is no history here, and really there is not really anything here other than the beach and the lagoon. It is this that is the highlight. After nine days of island hopping, you will have found the most exquisite of all island scenes. And while you can never have Elafonisi completely to yourself, the island is large enough to absorb its fascinated visitors. Return to Chania by dusk, where there is one final Greek sunset and probably a final taverna dinner.

Crete – Departure

It is just a 20-minute transfer from Chania to the international airport. After traveling via the ferries all week, you are now back in the sky without having to return two hours by road to Heraklion. The morning is at your leisure, and there is a good chance you will be taking a final stroll through the old Venetian town.

Trip Highlights

  • Be enchanted by the turquoise waters of Elafonisi, a tiny gem in the Aegean Sea
  • Explore the mythologized home of Apollo by spending a day amid the fabulous archaeological ruins on the island of Delos
  • Savor the chic vibes of Mykonos with a two-night stay on the most famous Cyclades island
  • Go sailing around Santorini and watch the sunset from Oia village
  • Discover 4,000 years of history in Crete, with one day taking you from Minoan to Venetian stories
  • Wander through the blue and white villages on each of the islands, with tradition found at almost every turn
  • Head off of the beaten path with 48 hours of downtime on Naxos, an island of beautiful beaches and quiet pleasures
  • Traverse Santorini to explore the villages, vineyards and ancient ruins

Detailed Description

The Greek islands are not easy to define. Some represent the cradle of Western civilization, holding 4,000 years of evocative history on their sun-scorched hills. Others feel like postcards of tradition, where mazy blue and white villages are dotted with church domes and tavernas. Some islands feel like an escape, with small coves and quiet beaches, while others have a chic forward-looking atmosphere, with lush seafood restaurants along the promenades and so many Instagrammed backdrops. Some of the Greek islands you are bound to have heard of, while others prefer their place in the proverbial shadow, happy to create a more local travel experience.

This handcrafted tour pieces together the best of the Greek islands, hopping to six different isles in just ten days. The island are all connected by convenient ferry routes, which serve as time and space to relax while you look over the Aegean. Mostly you will be in the Cyclades, the central island group between Athens and Crete. But from Santorini, you will also take a journey to Crete and spend a day on Elafonisi. This private tour is designed for travelers who are short on time but still want the complete Greek island flavors. It can be handcrafted further as each of these islands are worth one or two additional days. So if you have two weeks or more, you can follow the same route at a slower pace.

Fly into Mykonos, an understandably popular island famed for its windmills and whitewashed villages. This Cyclades island has everything you need with traditional tavernas, stylish cafes, atmospheric old sights, coastal views, and incredible sunsets. Ease into your vacation by spending two nights here. The first day is all Mykonos, and then spend the second day on nearby Delos, the mythologized birthplace for Greek gods and the world’s greatest trading center some 2,400 years ago. The archaeological remains are mind-boggling, and you will understand how the Greek islands were at the heart of Western civilization, many centuries ago.

Take the ferry to Naxos, a small and mostly undiscovered island on the sailing route south to Santorini. Naxos is all about you, the island providing silence and sublime beaches to relax on. There is not that much to do, which is why the island is such a nice 48-hour stop. Continue to the most photogenic island of them all, Santorini, where your suite in Oia has a private jacuzzi overlooking one of the world’s most famous sunsets. With three days on Santorini, there are so many different ways to enjoy the island. Go wine tasting at historical vineyards, walk the cliffs to Fira, sail to remote swimming spots, and walk up an iconic volcano. There are ruins as well, along with tavernas that help keep popular Greek islands traditional.

Continue your island hopping with the fast catamaran to Crete, and be there in under two hours. You will disembark in Heraklion and spend the day immersed in history, from the bronze age Palace of Knossos to a medieval old town and then a Venetian harbor. You will be on a one-way private island tour taking you to Chania, where you will indulge with the seafood and get a good feel for why Crete is different. Your final day is spent on beautiful beaches, in and around the tiny island of Elafonisi, which lies southeast of Crete. Think turquoise lagoons, mountain streams, a peculiar green coast, and those never-ending coastal landscapes.  Looking for the best Greece travel experiences? Island-hopping in Greece: everything you need to know

Aug 26, 2021 • 8 min read

Explore the Greek islands by hopping on ferries across the seas © proslgn / Shutterstock

Scattered like pearls across the shimmering Aegean and Ionian seas, the Greek islands have lured in many travelers. From Jason and his adventuring Argonauts to Frankish Crusaders and Mamma Mia film crews, myth and enchantment envelop the islands much like their ribbons of sugar-soft sand.

There’s nothing quite like spotting the shoreline from a sun-drenched ferry deck or sailing into a vibrant port. In Greece , getting there is an essential part of the adventure and, thankfully, island hopping is a breeze.

When is the best time to go to the Greek islands?

While the Greek islands are stunning at any time of year, aim to visit between Orthodox Easter (usually April) and the end of May, or from September to mid-October. During these times, services and amenities are up and running, temperatures are balmy and crowds are thinner. From June until the end of August, you will definitely have warm sea water and hot weather, but you’ll be sharing it with the masses, paying top bill, and the meltemi (dry northerly wind) can play havoc with ferry schedules. In the low winter season, many ferry routes cease to operate, and hotels and restaurants shut up shop.

Depending on which Greek islands you're hoping to visit, it's a good idea to also check the local calendars for  panigyria . These Greek summer festivals  are unique cultural experiences that can be a lot of fun, but they also might affect ferry schedules, opening hours at attractions, and produce crowds and parades that can otherwise complicate the logistics of getting around.  Panigyria on Ikaria , for example, occur all summer long on various saints' days, and some of the festivities run from dusk until dawn.

Should you plan your Greek island-hopping trip in advance?

In reality, it’s best to plan a little and leave a little to chance. A bit of planning can definitely take you a long way. Deciding where you want to go and understanding the ferry schedules before you go will take the work out of your vacation. Having said that, Greece is known for its laid-back attitude, and it’s worth emulating this while island-hopping. Ferry schedules are always subject to change, even pre-booked and pre-paid journeys. Anything from windy weather to worker strikes can mean delay or cancellation at short notice. Building a little flexibility into your schedule is wise.

What are the best Greek island-hopping routes?

You can definitely pick a few options from various groups of Greek islands and create your own route; however, many ferry lines service specific island groups, so planning can be easier if you stick to a single area. All flights lead to Athens – or so it seems – and arriving in the capital not only gives you the opportunity to take in its jaw-dropping sights, but it also brings you close to the port of Piraeus for boats to the Cyclades, Saronic Gulf islands  and even more remote island groups like the Dodecanese. Athens also neighbors the port of Rafina for routes to the eastern Cyclades and further afield. To visit the Northeastern Aegean islands, land in Thessaloniki , Greece’s second city.

If you’re planning to spend most of your time in a specific island group, it’s worth catching a domestic flight from Athens to get you started – it will save you both time and money. Practicality aside, there’s nothing quite like descending in a twin engine onto a tiny airstrip in the middle of the bright blue sea.  Some island destinations are also served by international flights in high season.

Which Greek islands are best to visit?

The appeal of the Cyclades is undeniable, and it’s here that you’ll find some of the most popular islands. Be prepared to share, especially in high season. From Piraeus, hop a ferry to Mykonos, the most glamorous of the Greek islands . Overlooked by its iconic windmills, you’ll rub shoulders with the famous as you explore the flower-filled lanes and boutique shops and cafes.

From here, day-trip to the tiny island of Delos with its ancient sun-bleached ruins. Carry on to Naxos , the largest of the Cyclades, with a walled seaside capital surrounding a hilltop castle. Even further south, you’ll reach Santorini with its iconic sunsets, black-sand beaches, vineyards and incredible Minoan site . Complete the loop with a stop in laid-back Milos , with dozens of beaches and charming villages to explore. At the end of the day, hop a ferry back to Piraeus.

In the Dodecanese , you’ll see and taste the historical influences of the parade of cultures that have passed through, from Romans and crusading medieval knights to Byzantine and Ottoman rulers. Think plenty of pasta, sugary baklava, stunning minarets, walled cities and crumbling mountaintop castles. The catamaran service that regularly connects the islands makes island-hopping simple. Begin by catching a flight to Rhodes , which abounds in sandy beaches, ancient history and a buzzing city life.

Visit volcanic Nisyros to hike through its verdant forests and into its steaming caldera, and Karpathos for its timeless hilltop village of Olymbos . Kalymnos will call climbers and divers with its undersea wrecks and limestone cliffs, while Patmos has an ethereal quality, where life is in tune with the monastery bells and where St. John experienced his revelations. If you’re visiting around Orthodox Easter, Patmos is the place to be. Loop back to popular Kos for an endless strip of brown-sugar sand, nightlife, easily cyclable roads and an airport with regular flights to Athens.

Ionian Islands

Nestled along the coast of the Peloponnese in the Ionian Sea, the Ionian Islands have a slightly cooler climate, abundantly forested mountains and countless stands of olive and cypress trees. From Athens, you can fly to Corfu where you’ll be wooed by Parisian-style arcades, Venetian alleyways and Italian-inspired delicacies. Corfu is large enough to escape the crowds to cypress-studded hills, lofty villages and sandy coves.

The next island is tiny Paxi, with beautiful harbor villages, rolling hills and ancient olive groves. Visit Lefkada for its sandy beaches and Kefallonia to kayak along the magnificent cobalt-blue bays. Take in time-forgotten Kythira for sugar-cube architecture and unspoiled wilderness. Far flung to the south, you can ferry back to Piraeus from here.

How to book ferry tickets

With a network covering every inhabited island, the Greek ferry system is vast and varied. The slow rust buckets that once plied the seas are nearly a thing of the past. High-speed ferries are increasingly common and cover most popular routes. Local ferries, excursion boats and tiny private fishing boats (called caiques ) often connect neighboring islands and islets. Meanwhile, plush catamarans can drastically reduce travel time and cope better with poor weather. For long-haul ferry travel, you can travel in serious comfort.

Many ferry companies have online booking services. Not surprisingly, high-speed boats sell out faster than slow chuggers. For overnight ferries, it’s always best to book ahead. These resources are useful for planning and booking:

  • Danae Travel   A good site for booking boat tickets.
  • Greek Travel Pages  Useful search option and links for ferries.
  • Greekferries  Search ferry schedules, including accommodation options and multi-leg journeys.
  • Open Seas  Reliable search engine for ferry routes and schedules.

Tips for traveling the Greek islands

  • When you book a ticket, you'll find that deck-class is just that: access to the deck and interior but no bunks, berths or cabins. Keep in mind that unless you state otherwise, you will automatically be given deck class when purchasing a ticket. For more luxurious or overnight accommodations, prices climb with airplane-style recliner seats right up to private cabins with bathrooms.
  • If you are considering taking a ferry overnight, it's worth remembering that a bed for the night in a cabin from Piraeus to Rhodes can be more expensive than a discounted airline ticket. It’s worth shopping around, depending on where you land in the Venn diagram of considerations like cost, travel time, comfort and a desire to experience of sailing the high seas.
  • If you're traveling around  Greece with kids , children under five years of age travel for free on many ferry services, and tickets for those aged between five and 10 are usually half price.
  • Food on ferries can be overpriced and underwhelming. Bring your own snacks and water, or save your appetite for the famously robust food scenes in destinations like Rhodes and Symi.
  • You might not have much appetite if you veer towards seasickness. The water can be rough, so stare at the horizon, not the sea. Stay on deck for fresh air and don’t be tempted to read or use binoculars.
  • If you're hoping to explore the Greek islands by car, note that bringing a car on the ferries is expensive and generally requires advance booking. Car rental on the islands is relatively cheap and possible on almost every island.
  • If you've got some energy left, or extra room in your itinerary after returning to the mainland, remember that Piraeus is more than just the gateway to the Greek islands. You can easily spend a whole day in Piraeus  itself, or at the very least check out the city's vibrant nightlife at popular clubs like  Beluga  and  M adama after you disembark the ferry.

The tour officially starts at 3.30pm with the Welcome Meeting at Selina Theatrou Athens on the first day. You can check-in to the hotel any time during this day. Just have in mind that your room might not be ready until after 3pm. The tour ends back at the Selina Theatrou Athens where you spend the last night of the tour which will finish when you check-out of the hotel at 11.00am the following day. Due to the possibility of delays to the ferry, we strongly recommend against booking onward travel on the night you return to Athens (day 10 of the tour).

The tour officially starts at 4:30pm with the Welcome Meeting at Grande Murano Hotel on the first day. You can check-in to your accommodation at any time during this day. Just have in mind that your room might be ready after 2pm. The tour ends at check out from Paradise Beach Club (Mykonos) at 10.00am.

A basic continental breakfast is included every morning with your Greek Island Hopping tour. Lunch, dinner and snacks are not included, as this is another way we save on costs by allowing you to spend as much as you like on food and drinks, and try authentic local cuisine. Your friendly tour manager will of course recommend places to eat and drink!

We offer two accommodation options on our Greek Island Hopping Tours.

Shared, dorm-style accommodation is a standard inclusion on our tours, which sees up to 5 people of mixed genders sharing a dorm. Due to capacity restrictions, accommodation partners may occasionally allocate Private Twin Rooms to guests that have booked shared accommodation, however, this is not guaranteed and is out of Med Experience’s control.

For guests who would prefer the privacy of a private room, there is the option of upgrading to a Private Twin Room for an additional cost. Private Twin Rooms are available for 2 guests booking a twin-shared room. If you’re a solo traveller and would like to book a Private Twin Room, please contact our Sales Team to check availability and pricing.

To view our accommodation partners, images and facilities, visit our blog here .

*Please note: accommodation is subject to change. In the event of a change in accommodation provider, alternative accommodation will be provided of the same or higher standard.

The tours are designed for 18-39 year old travellers, so a mixture of this age range will be on the tour with you. We find that most of our clients are a mix of couples, groups and solo travellers. All travellers must be 18 years of age when the tour commences.

We book the most convenient ferries as close to departure as possible to ensure you are getting the best available ferry, and to take into consideration any foreseeable strikes or disruptions! Using a combination of ferries and high speed catamarans, we select the best ferries to match the check-in time at your accommodation, ensuring you have more time to explore each destination. Once at your destination we arrange all transfers between the ports and accommodation.

The length of the ferry will vary depending on availability and the destination, ranging from 1 - 7 hours. We recommend bringing a good book or utilising the onboard wi-fi on some of the longer journeys.

If you’re joining us on an 11 day tour, you will arrive at Athens International Airport. From Athens International Airport, you can take the Blue line Metro directly to Monastiraki station. Selina Hotel is located a 7 minute walk from Monastiraki Station.

If you’re joining us on a 9 day day tour, you will start your tour in Santorini. If you are arriving by ferry, there are taxis which will take you to Grande Murano Hotel when you arrive in port. To get to your accommodation from Thira Airport, the cheapest way is to travel by bus to Fira Town and then walk for approximately 8 minutes.

We are a small family-owned and operated company that’s highest priority is you, our guests! We have established relationships with local suppliers so you are receiving an authentic Greek experience. We also take care of all the work for you, so unlike other Greek Island tours which require you to book your own rooms or sleep in tents, all our accommodations are in 2 and 3 star hostels and hotels which provide air conditioning and comfort during those warm summer evenings in Greece. We also arrange all of your ferry tickets, removing the risk of cancellations, strikes and inclement weather ruining your holidays.

Our Greek island Hopping Tour is not a cruise, you travel between the islands via public ferries and stay in hostels or small hotels on each island and on the mainland.

We recommend a starting budget of €60 per person, per day to cover meals. If you would like to participate in additional excursions, or party in the evenings, we would suggest allowing additional budget. Greece uses the Euro and is a part of the European Union as well as the Schengen region. There are plenty of ATM’s in Greece to get cash out as well as exchange offices.

While transfers between the ferry port and accommodation are included, it's important to note that some of our hotels and hostels are located in picturesque locations by the beach and require local transfers to get to the main town. If you wish you explore the town or take part in an orientation walk, please be prepared to cover the cost of local transport (maximum amount €5).

Yes- despite our busy schedule, you'll have time to explore local culture, take a stroll, or get up to whatever you desire to make the most out of your experience. Your tour guide will advise you each day as to when free time is available.

Yes we are! Sail Croatia owns and operates Med Experience. Sail Croatia has been operating since 2003 and today is one of the biggest and most respected tour operators in Europe.

Greek Island Hopping: A Step-By-Step Guide For Beginners And Not Only

Island hopping in Greece is an experience of a lifetime! The stunning scenery, crystal-clear waters, delicious food, and rich history and culture make for a fantastic trip. Here are all the tips you need to plan your Greek island-hopping trip entirely on your own.

Tips for island hopping in Greece - A step by step guide

How to travel between the Greek islands by ferry

Island hopping in Greece is a unique experience. From the amazing beaches to the picturesque villages and numerous ancient sites, there is so much to explore on each island.

With well over 100 beautiful islands to choose from, planning an island hopping trip to Greece might seem like a daunting task. In reality, though, it’s not that hard to plan your Greek vacation on your own.

Vanessa in Santorini Tips for island hopping in Greece

I’m Vanessa from Athens, and I’ve been island-hopping in Greece since I was a kid. I’ve travelled to over 60 of our islands, and I wrote this guide to help you plan your own island hopping trip in Greece. Here is my step-to-step guide and my best tips!

1. Research the best time of year to visit the Greek islands

Before you start planning to travel to the Greek islands, you should know that Greece has four seasons. In fact, winters in Greece can be surprisingly cold and damp. Most of the coastal resorts, even on world-famous islands like Santorini, actually shut down in winter!

The best months to visit the islands of Greece are from May to September, when the weather is warm and you can enjoy the beautiful beaches.

However, keep in mind that July and August are peak tourist season, and many islands will be crowded. If you’re looking for a calmer vacation, consider visiting in May, June or late September.

Sunset at the Portara Naxos - Tips for island hopping in Greece

April and October are also good options, though the weather can be a little hit and miss. If you are looking to visit in April or early May, you could plan your trip around the Greek Orthodox Easter celebrations , which are very unique.

For some more insight, have a look at these articles:

  • Best time to visit the Greek islands
  • Hottest Greek islands to visit in October

2. Check a map of Greece and see where the islands are

As you are starting to plan your trip, look at a map of Greece. You will notice that most of the islands are clustered together in groups. The main Greek island groups are the following:

  • Cyclades islands , known for their white-washed houses and dry, rocky landscapes. Mykonos , Santorini , Paros, Naxos and Milos belong to the Cycladic islands.
  • Saronic islands , which are located close to Athens and are known for their cosmopolitan feel. Examples are Aegina, Hydra and Spetses.
  • Sporades islands , known for their verdant landscapes. There are four islands in this group – Skiathos, Skopelos , Alonissos and Skyros.
  • Dodecanese islands , which are the furthest away from Athens. Some of them are Rhodes, Kos, Symi , Tilos and Nisyros .
  • Northern Aegean islands , some of the lesser known islands in Greece. Lesvos, Chios and Ikaria are some of the biggest ones.
  • Ionian islands , which are known for their long sandy beaches and thick forests. Corfu , Kefalonia and Zakynthos are the most popular ones.
  • Crete , Greece’s largest island, which is located to the south of the Greek mainland.
  • Evia , a large island close to Athens, which you can reach via a bridge.

For more information on what each island group looks like, have a look at this  introduction to the Greek island groups .

3. How to plan your Greek island itinerary

To plan your Greek island itinerary, research the islands and their attractions, allocate time for each island, plan accommodation and transportation, create a rough daily itinerary, and be flexible in case of unexpected changes.

That was easy, eh? Let’s break this down further!!

So, if you are like most people, you will have about one or two weeks to spend in Greece. In order to save time and avoid last-minute stress, it’s usually best to plan your itinerary in advance.

First, you will need to decide which islands you want to visit. While it can be an overwhelming task, it becomes a lot easier if you narrow them down by island group, or proximity on the map! Then, you can decide if you want to focus on the most touristy islands, or perhaps some small islands that you don’t know anything about.

A local's guide to island hopping in Greece

As you are planning your itinerary, you will need to check transportation options between the islands. It’s much easier to visit islands that are directly connected to each other via ferry.

I use a search engine called Ferryscanner to check ferry routes and book my ferry tickets. Most ferry itineraries are released a few months in advance, so there’s plenty of time to plan. You can also see past ferry routes on a site called Openseas . While exact routes may change from one year to the next, this will give you a pretty solid indication.

Find the best Greek island hopping routes

My best tip when island hopping in Greece, is to visit islands which are connected on direct ferries. Usually, these belong to the same island groups.

Some examples are:

  • Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos
  • Andros and Tinos
  • Milos and Kimolos
  • Rhodes, Nisyros and Kos
  • Santorini and Crete
  • Ithaca, Kefalonia and Zakynthos
  • Corfu and Paxi.

While it may be tempting to visit islands in completely different island groups, you will find that the logistical challenges involved might not be worth it. For example, travelling from the Cyclades to the Ionian islands would require flights and / or ferry journeys of several hours.

Of course, it’s still possible to visit islands that are far from each other if that’s what you want. Just be prepared to allow for extra travel time, and note that transportation is likely to be costly.

Greek island hopping tips

Allow enough time on each island

When you are planning your Greece trip, you will be tempted to try and visit several islands, especially since there are so many beautiful ones to choose from. However, more isn’t always better!

I recommend spending at least 3 nights on each island, and longer for larger islands. So, if you have 9-10 days in Greece, I would suggest that you visit no more than three islands.

It’s also important to factor in travel time between islands when planning your itinerary. Check the ferry schedules and travel times carefully, as they can vary depending on the season and the day of the week. And note that, occasionally, a ferry might get delayed – more on this, later.

You can island hop to Patmos from other Dodecanese islands

Allow enough time to see the sights, enjoy the gorgeous beaches and scenic landscapes, soak up the atmosphere, and fully immerse yourself in the local culture. This will help make your trip to Greece even more memorable!

4. Check flight options to Greece

Once you’ve got a rough plan in mind, you can check out available flight options to Greece and the islands. Many people fly into the Athens International Airport (ATH), the biggest airport in Greece.

However, several islands also have international airports. If you are flying from Europe, you may be able to find direct flights to major destinations in Greece such as Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes, Kos, Kefalonia and Skiathos. These flights are usually available during late spring, summer and autumn.

In addition, several islands such as Naxos, Milos or Syros have domestic airports, and there are daily connections to and from the Athens airport year-round. So you can fly into Athens, and catch an onward flight a few hours later.

Once you’ve booked your flights, you can move on to the next step: book your accommodation!

5. Book your hotels on the Greek islands

Once you have planned your itinerary and decided which islands you want to visit and in what order, you can go ahead and book your accommodation on each one.

Accommodation options on the Greek islands can vary a lot. Some islands, like Mykonos or Santorini, will offer a range of luxury resorts and villas. Most islands also have more budget-friendly options like guesthouses or small family-run hotels.

Family-run hotel on the Greek islands

I recommend booking your accommodation in advance, especially if you’re travelling during peak season. While there may be last-minute options available, they might not be suitable for your specific needs.

Also, keep in mind that many of the smaller islands, such as Schinoussa or Donoussa , have limited accommodation options. During the high season, rooms can actually get sold out, as there are many travellers who return every year. Make sure you check availability of accommodation before finalizing your itinerary.

I’ve always found that Booking.com offers more choice and better value in Greece than other similar platforms such as Airbnb or VRBO. So make sure you check all options before you book.

6. How to buy Greek ferry tickets

Once you have booked your accommodation, you can book your ferry tickets as well. As mentioned earlier, Ferryscanner is a useful search engine to check ferry routes and book your tickets.

Some travellers prefer to book their ferry tickets last minute. In my opinion, it’s usually best to book them at least a week or two in advance, especially during the peak tourist season when some ferries can actually sell out.

And while there will often be another ferry on the same day that you can take, it doesn’t hurt to secure the route you actually prefer!

A few tips on ferry travel in Greece

Ferries are the most common mode of transportation between the Greek islands. There is a huge network of ferries, some of which run year-round. Others are seasonal and run in spring, summer and autumn.

Itineraries for most ferries are announced a few months in advance. So, for example, if you are travelling in June, you will find that most ferry routes will be announced by March or April.

The Greek ferry system is very efficient overall. Still, ferries can sometimes be delayed or, in rare cases, cancelled. Always allow for extra time when planning your ferry trip. If you are flying back home from Athens, I suggest spending your last evening in the Greek capital.

Keep in mind that ferries will typically be crowded during peak season. Get to the port at least a half hour early, especially if you don’t have a numbered seat – more on this below.

And finally, make sure to bring a light jacket on board. Some of those ferries have ridiculously cold air-condition!

Fast ferries vs slow ferries

Generally speaking, there are two types of ferries in Greece: the fast ferries and the slow ferries.

The fast ferries only have assigned indoor seating, and you are not allowed to walk on the outdoor deck. People often refer to all fast ferries as “SeaJets”, as the majority are run by a company called SeaJets.

Seajet ferries are a popular way to island hop in Greece

Note that not all SeaJets are equal – in fact, they vary a lot in size. The smaller ones can be claustrophobic for some people, and are a no-no if you easily get seasick, as the meltemi summer winds will affect them. If you have a choice, it’s best to travel on the bigger SeaJets, that also carry vehicles on board.

Most of the slow ferries are bigger, and they have both an outdoor and an indoor area. They are generally more comfortable to travel on, even on windy days, and are also cheaper, especially if you get a deck (non-assigned) seat. Many of the most popular slow ferries travelling around the Aegean Sea are run by a company called Blue Star Ferries.

In any case, it’s a good idea to have some motion sickness medication with you, just in case. And if you are planning to sit on the deck, don’t forget your sunscreen and a hat. You won’t feel you are sunburned until you look at yourself in the mirror – I’ve learnt the hard way!

7. Choose some tours to enhance your Greek Island Experience

If you are interested in taking any organized tours on the islands you are visiting, it’s worth doing some research before you go.

You will typically find many interesting options on most islands. Some examples are sailing tours, guided tours of the ancient sites, road trips, cooking classes, and outdoor activities.

Here is a tiny selection of great tours on some of the most popular Greek islands:

  • Sunset cruise in Santorini , a great way to experience the iconic island
  • Guided tour of the Palace of Knossos in Crete , which was first built around 1,900 BC!
  • Half-day trip from Mykonos to Ancient Delos and Rhenia – combines history, culture and amazing swimming spots
  • Cooking class in Naxos island , one of my favourite Cyclades islands for food
  • Amazing sailing trip in Milos , a fantastic activity where you will see the amazing coastline of Milos
  • Kayaking in Rhodes – I took this myself and had a blast!

For a huge selection of tours in Greece and the rest of the world, you can check out these two platforms: GetYourGuide and Viator .

In addition to that, you can usually find last-minute sailing tours on most islands, often on smaller boats with basic facilities. Ask around at the main port town.

8. Decide how you are going to get around each island

There are several ways to get around the islands. Examples are public buses, taxis, boat trips, and walking / hiking. You will also find or rental cars, ATVs, scooters and bicycles on most islands.

Public transportation is one of the most affordable ways to get around the islands. The buses are known as KTEL buses, so you can Google the name of the island plus the phrase “KTEL bus” to find out bus itineraries. Note that these change often – there are more services in the peak season months than, for example, in April or May.

All in all, renting a vehicle will offer more freedom, and you will be able to visit places at your own pace. DiscoverCars is a great website where you can easily book cars for many of the largest islands. You can also check Google Maps for car rental services on each island – just make sure you read reviews from previous customers.

Like with hotels, if you are travelling in July or August, it’s usually best to book your vehicle in advance. Have a look at this article on driving in Greece .

9. Learn a few Greek words and phrases

Learning the Greek alphabet and a couple of basic Greek phrases can enhance your island hopping experience in Greece. While English is widely spoken in tourist areas, Greeks truly appreciate it when visitors make an effort to speak Greek.

Start with the basics, like “ kalimera ” (good morning), and “ yiassou ” (hello /goodbye). Also, try to master “ parakaló ” (please), and “ efharistó ” (thank you). Unfortunately, the last one is a bit of a challenge for most people!

I’ve written three guides with a few words and phrases in Greek – have a look:

  • The Greek alphabet
  • Useful Greek words and phrases
  • Greek curse words – use them wisely, if at all 🙂

10. How to pack for your island hopping trip

And now, let’s fast forward to a few days before your Greek island hopping trip… packing time!

When packing for your trip to Greece, keep in mind that the islands can get very hot in the summer months. Be sure to pack light, breathable clothing. However, make sure you also throw in a light jacket for those windy evenings, or the air-conditioned ferries.

Now, I can not stress it enough: Exploring the Greek islands usually involves lots of walking, and it will often seem that there are stairs wherever you go. Bring your most comfortable walking shoes , and consider packing light, as you may need to carry your suitcase up and down several flights of stairs.

A view of Santorini - A guide to island hopping in Greece

You will also need a hat, sunglasses, your swimsuit, sunscreen and insect repellent. Mosquitoes in Greece are not dangerous, but they can be a nuisance… I’m talking from experience! Here’s how to avoid mosquitoes in Greece .

That said, if you forget any of those items, no worries – they are easily available all around Greece. Pharmacies, cosmetics stores and supermarkets all stock sunscreen and insect repellent, but you can also find them at many tourist shops.

Here is some more information on what to pack for Greece for every season and why I think Tevas are the best shoes for Greece .

11. Bring some cash to use on the Greek islands

These days, most businesses in Greece take credit and debit cards. However, you will still find that, sometimes, you can pay in cash only. As an example, local buses in Santorini require cash payment!

Similarly, some smaller family-run restaurants and shops in remote areas will typically prefer cash payment. In rare occasions, you might not even have the option to pay with your card.

Island hopping in Greece - Milos

Therefore, it’s always a good idea to carry some cash on you when you are out and about. And if you need to withdraw money, there will usually be an ATM or two in the island’s main towns.

In terms of cards, while Visa and Mastercard are both fine, note than American Express is not widely accepted in Greece.

Actually, I warmly recommend Revolut whenever you are travelling – I’ve been using it for years and it’s saved me a lot of hassle and commission fees in many countries. If you want to have a look, you can check out my referral link !

12. Embrace Greek island life!

And the big day has arrived – you are finally on one of the Greek islands! Now what?

Well! As a Greek, I can tell you that our islands are known for their relaxed and slow pace of life. Do take some time to relax on the great beaches, and take in the stunning wild beauty of the islands.

Wherever you go, you are going to want to do some sightseeing, explore the towns and traditional villages, and learn about the ancient history. But don’t forget to slow down! Take your time to embrace the Greek cuisine, and enjoy a leisurely meal with a couple of drinks at one of the Greek tavernas .

Here is my guide with 50 of the best Greek dishes !

Enjoy the tavernas on the islands

Last, but definitely not least, make sure you talk to the locals and ask about island life. I’ve always found that the conversations I’ve had with the islanders have offered me more insight about the local culture than I could ever find in any travel book or guide!

FAQs about Greek island hopping

Here are some questions that readers have asked me in the past:

Which is the best Greek island for island hopping?

You can start your Greek island hopping trip in Athens, or on any island with an international airport. Some examples are the two most famous islands in Greece, Santorini and Mykonos, which many first-time visitors include in their Greece tour. Other islands with international airports include Crete, Rhodes, Kos, Corfu, Kefalonia and Zakynthos. You can easily take a ferry from any of those to other nearby islands.

Is Greek island hopping worth it?

It is definitely worth visiting the Greek islands at least once in your life. To plan your Greek island itinerary on your own, you will need to choose the islands you want to visit, and research ferry connections between them.

When should I go Greek island hopping?

The best time of the year to travel around the Greek islands is between May and September, when the weather is warm. You will then make the most of the fantastic beaches and enjoy the local atmosphere.

How easy is Greek island hopping?

It’s actually pretty easy to plan your Greek island hopping itinerary on your own. Alternatively, you can always find some Greek island hopping packages or even sailing cruises.

What is the best way to island hop in Greece?

The best, and often the only, way to island hop in Greece is by ferry. There are several Greek island hopping routes which usually include some of the most popular islands. If you like sailing, you can also take a sailing trip around the islands.

Do you need a car for Greek island hopping?

While a car is not strictly necessary if you want to visit Greece and the Greek islands, it will offer you more freedom if you want to explore each island at your own pace. Public transportation is quite good on some of the most popular islands, but if you want to visit remote beaches or get away from areas with mass tourism, a vehicle is always a good idea.

Is Greek island hopping expensive?

Greek island hopping doesn’t need to be expensive. To keep ferry costs down, it’s better to visit fewer islands that are on the same island hopping route. Here’s some information on island hopping in Greece on a budget , and my article on why Greece is not expensive .

What kind of seat will I have on the ferry?

You’ll find a standard seat reserved for you while you’re sailing between the mainland and islands. (Mhm, travelling just like the locals!)

Will the ferries have Wi-Fi?

Looking to disconnect from the world (and connect with your new travel pals)? Ferries are the place to be. The Wi-Fi and phone signal when sailing between islands (understandably) tends to be weak. That’s why we always recommend using an e-SIM or getting a local SIM so you can have continued connectivity. But there’s no need to worry if you don’t have one. All accommodations throughout the trip will have Wi-Fi available - so you can keep your Insta followers updated on all the fun!

Do all of the hotels have pools?

Almost every time. Most of our accommodations tend to have pool facilities. But hey, you’ve got the sparkling Aegean waters of Greece by your side. So if you wanna take a swim, you’ve got the entire sea to explore.

Can I know what time the ferry will depart & arrive?

Ferry departure & arrival timings tend to change for every trip. So if you’d like to know the exact time, you can contact our 24/7 customer service centre.

Exceptions may apply where pre booking is required but this will be made known to you in your pre departure information.

A number of meal times are left open for you to explore a region and its foodie offerings in greater detail, so budgeting for your taste in non-catered meals is important.

Travel insurance and visas are also not included in the cost of your trip, and should be booked separately.

It’s a requirement of traveling with Contiki that you take out comprehensive insurance cover for cancellation, personal injury, death, medical expenses, repatriation expenses, evacuation expenses, personal liability & loss of personal property and Covid related expenses before you travel with us. It’s also super important to check that your insurance covers all of the activities you’ll be trying out, particularly any adventure activities (for all you adrenaline junkies). greece island hopping tour

Greece island hopping: A guide to the best routes and how to explore Greek culture

Greece ’s wide scattering of differently sized, culturally distinct islands makes it a dream for a multi-stop trip. Come May and June , ferry services ramp up for summer, with hops between different islands taking as little as 20 minutes.

Some islands are vast and ripe for exploring, requiring a taxi, hire car or moped to get across their width. In others, you’ll simply find a bijou port and a forested interior, fringed by rocky or sandy coves you can stroll to. Wherever you go, you’ll find waterfront tavernas, petite churches, hushed beaches and sunkissed portside bars. Plus, there are Greek Isles hotels that will seriously make you want to linger.

But where to start? Greece’s ferry networks are complex, with different services available at different times of year; it’s best to use a journey planner such as Ferryhopper.com to check ahead for timings and operators. Services can run late, so leave plenty of time between your last ferry and your flight home – an easy (and stressful!) first-time mistake to make.

Best for first timers: The Argo-Saronics

Route: athens-poros-hydra-spetses.

Close to the capital of Athens and its port, Piraeus, these islands huddled around the Greek mainland are fab for a first go if you’re not sure island hopping is for you. Spend a few cultured nights in the capital, then hop on the ferry to nearby Poros, just over an hour away: here you’ll find a smart little red-roofed port topped with a clock tower and a handful of hotels and apartments. Dine by the waterfront, then go off in search of the emerald waters at Love Bay.

Just 35 minutes’ boat-ride from here is Hydra, a tiny but glamorous speck which has attracted artists, musicians and photographers since the Sixties. Bask in its romantic port and sunset bars, then walk the coast road to find secret pebble bays, or take a boat trip to its quietest corners.

Next up is Spetses, 40 minutes away – the mellow, car-free island where recent film The Lost Daughter was shot. Seek out its Cave of Bekiris, tiny whitewashed churches and one of the oldest lighthouses in Greece; then take the 2hr 50min catamaran all the way back to Piraeus for a flight out of Athens.

These undiscovered islands don’t get as much footfall as the Cyclades (below) so you can go in peak July and not feel too much of a crush. However, September is a delightful, quieter time to visit.

Where to stay

In Athens, historic Asomaton is walking distance from the sights.

On Poros, try the mellow Saga Hotel for a bougainvillea-draped pool.

On Hydra, guesthouse Hydra Icons has 360-degree views from its rooftop.

On Spetses, Niriides Guesthouse is a chic three-star with a family-run feel.

For classic looks: The Cyclades

Route: santorini-milos-sifnos-serifos-paros-mykonos.

There are two key ingredients for a successful island-hopping adventure: cheap and plentiful flights into and out of your start and end point, and plenty of ferry links in between. In the Cyclades, where the houses are tiny and whitewashed and the cliffs and bays dramatic and undeveloped, there are UK flights to both Mykonos and Santorini – so compare prices and consider flying into one and out of the other. You could start on Santorini for its jaw-dropping cliffside views, killer sunsets and upmarket dinners, taking the two-hour Seajets ferry on to Milos after two or three days.

Klima’s brightly painted fisherman’s houses are the top sight here, but head to lunar-like Sarakiniko Beach, too (this island is beach central) and take a boat to the Caves of Milos. Next up is Sifnos, 40 minutes away, where you’re spoilt for pretty whitewashed villages to potter around (don’t miss Chrissopigi Monastery); then to Serifos, 20 minutes on, an unspoiled spot with a particularly beautiful Chora, or port town. You’ve just got time for a stop on Paros (a 90-minute service that runs every few days) – which has a slightly more modern feel and a bit of nightlife – before a 40-minute boat on to Mykonos, for ample flights home.

Best time to go

These islands fill up during July and August, so go in early June or mid-September for the best combo of weather and quiet-ish landscapes.

On Santorini, the delightful Vasilicos guesthouse is family-run and tailored to you.

On Milos, Milos Summer Time is all cerulean-painted shutters and sea views; on Sifnos, the Sigma Residences are the trendy pad du jour.

On Serifos, the team at stylish Nostos Boutique Hotel will help you get out and explore

On Paros, affordable Ayeri Hotel is slightly out of the port crush.

On Mykonos, Marisso Hotel is a chilled overnight before a flight home.

For unspoiled nature: The Ionians

Route: lefkada-kefalonia-ithaca-kefalonia-zakynthos.

Substantially larger, with more towns and trails to dig into, these forested isles are some of the nearest to the UK. Flights into Preveza (connected to Lefkada island), Kefalonia and Zakynthos give you flexibility on route and order. We’d suggest flying into Preveza for the first few nights on Lefkada, staying in relaxed Nidri or Vasiliki for boat trips out to its mind-blowingly beautiful beaches. From Vasiliki you can take the West Ferry to Fiskardo on Kefalonia’s north coast (1hr 45m), then spend up to a week seeing undeveloped beaches, pine forests and gorgeous Venetian towns on this dazzling island.

Heading east to Sami port, take the 20-minute boat on to Ithaca, a petite, forgotten-feeling speck of gorgeous wild beaches, tiny port towns and chic guesthouses. From here, you could nip back to Kefalonia and fly home; or voyage 3hr 45m onward to Zakynthos, home to some of the Ionians’ most beautiful beaches. Take in its poster-child “Shipwreck Beach”, Navagio, snorkel with loggerhead turtles or take boats to vivid caves before flying home.

Ferries run between May and September, so go May to early June or September for the best chance of quieter bays and plenty of ferry seats.

On Lefkada, chilled out apartments like Santa Emelia cost from as little as £75 a night.

On Kefalonia, Anthi’s Beach Apartments fit in with the tranquil vibe of Fiskardo.

Further south on Kefalonia, southerly F Zeen is a fitness-focused splurge.

On Ithaca, Korina Gallery Hotel is near the restaurants and boats of Vathy harbour.

On Zakynthos, try the chic Tsamis Zante Suites.
