With so many incredible Edinburgh Instagram spots , it can be hard to choose where to go! Luckily, we’ve put together this post of some of the most Instagrammable Edinburgh locations for you after visiting the city multiple times.

Edinburgh is a magical city filled with history, castles, and more. I was lucky enough to visit for a few days during a Scotland road trip, and to this day, the city still stands out as one of my favorites.

When you visit, you can use this guide to find the best Edinburgh Instagram spots so that you can get the picture-perfect shot!

#1 Photo Spot in Edinburgh

Are you visiting Edinburgh for only a short trip? Make sure not to miss out on Edinburgh Castle , the best photo spot in Edinburgh.

Armchair books.

Interior of a bookshop with shelves covered in books located in Edinburgh.

Armchair Books is a beautiful secondhand bookshop in the old town of Edinburgh and only around five minutes away from Edinburgh Castle.

It’s located on West Port, where several  Edinburgh bookshops  can be found, but with its floor-to-ceiling shelves and winding corridors, Armchair Books is the best.

Here, you can buy second-hand books of all kinds and genres as they sell beautiful vintage editions as well as second-hand copies of recent releases.

It’s a great place to look for copies of books that have been released in the last few decades, as they usually have several copies of each book at low prices!

This bookshop’s tall and messy brown shelves are positively stuffed with books, giving this whole shop a vintage feel, and you could believe that you’d stepped into the past.

To snap a good picture of Armchair Books, you’ll have to wait for the main corridors of the shop to empty, so going earlier in the day is advisable.

With quite tight passages, you may have to squeeze past people as you browse if you come when the store is busy, but that’s all part of the fun.

Edinburgh Castle

Rocky historic castle up on a hill in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Castle is one of the top tourist attractions in the city for good reason! Just look at it… it’s gorgeous and looks like a castle straight out of a fairytale!

The castle served as a fortress for many years and is now a museum for tourists to visit. It also holds all of Scotland’s Crown Jewels.

It’s located right along the Royal Mile near Edinburgh’s Old Town, so there’s a lot to do in the area.

An adult ticket costs £19.50, but the admission price is worth it. However, if you’re just visiting for the Instagram picture, you don’t even have to pay to go inside. The best view is from its exterior!

The only downside to the castle is that it’s always very busy. If you were to visit during the day, there’s a 100% chance that other people will be in your photos. Visit earlier in the morning to avoid the rush.

Whether you’re visiting for 3 days or a shorter trip, Edinburgh Castle is one Instagram spot that you can’t miss out on.

Arthur’s Seat

View from the top of a mountain looking down to Edinburgh.

If you’re looking for a great view of Edinburgh that’s panoramic, then you’ll definitely want to check out Arthur’s Seat . It’s situated on top of an old volcano, and some say that it’s even where Camelot was once located!

The hike to the top of Arthur’s Seat only takes 1-2 hours, depending on how fast you are.

Keep in mind that it does get pretty steep at the top, but you could opt to just stop right before the peak. No matter where you are on the mountain, you’re sure to get some great views of the city down below!

From the top of Arthur’s Seat, you can see all of Edinburgh, including Edinburgh Castle. You can even see out into the water!

To avoid the crowds, I suggest doing this hike earlier in the morning. Not many people are early birds, and this will make it easier for you to maneuver yourself around at the peak. You’ll also have a better chance of getting unobstructed views for your photos!

Calton Hill

Historic monument with pillars under a blue sky in Edinburgh.

Another great place to get a panoramic view of Edinburgh is actually from Calton Hill ! It’s one of the biggest hills in the city and offers views of the city and the water.

At the top of the hill, there’s even the National Monument, which will actually never be completed.

There’s also an art gallery that is worth checking out. I highly suggest packing a picnic to eat at the top because the views are just that good . You’ll want to use any excuse to soak them up!

Most people will ignore the view of the water, but it makes just as good of an Instagram photo as the view of the city does.

Calton Hill is also not a super busy area. I visited around 3 pm on a weekend, and there were very few people there! Everyone in my photo above was it.

Be warned that there is a bit of a walk to the top, but it is in no way as bad as the hike to Arthur’s Seat, and the view is quite similar.

Camera Obscura & World of Illusions

Two people reaching for each other with an optical illusion that makes one person look bigger than the other

Visiting Camera Obscura is one of those  funny things to do in Edinburgh . The building has six floors filled with several curiosities that give such unique photo ops.

The most fascinating is the forced perspective room – the room that, in reality, isn’t as it appears in the photo, which creates optical illusions.

It’s just too good. A photo-op here is no good unless there are two people, at least. So, tag along with a buddy, or you could ask one of the staff there to pose with you.

There’s also a mirror maze, some basic light, electricity science experiments, and a pin-hole camera observatory here.

With very many concave, convex, and combined mirrors, multi-faceted and angled mirrors for funny reflections, this place is every Instagrammer’s delight.

This is located in the Royal Mile just opposite the Scotch Whisky Experience and very close to Edinburgh Castle. It’s a very short 10-minute walk from the railway station.

Circus Lane

Cobblestone street lined by small brick houses in Edinburgh.

Cobblestones, gorgeous wee mews houses, bright flowers, and a church steeple in the background… what more could you need for the perfect Instagram photo? Circus Lane is not just a lane; it is one of the most beautiful lanes in Edinburgh.

Circus Lane is located in the Stockbridge area of New Town, which was built in the 1760s. It was built as a home for the horse stables for the wealthy residents who lived in Royal Mews. These days, it is a very popular place to take the perfect photo.

Circus Lane is easily accessed by foot from Princes Street. Head up Fredrick Street (the first part of the walk is up a hill), but as you cross Herriot Row, it is a downhill walk.

Circus Lane will be on your left! Alternatively, you can take bus number 42 towards the Gyle or Longstone, and it will drop you off right outside Circus Lane.

To get the best photo, you need to visit the lane early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid crowds. Circus Lane is a suburban street, and therefore, there is nothing to do in the lane other than admire its beauty.

You also need to be mindful that locals do live in these houses, so try not to disturb them.

The best angle to take your photo from is looking down the lane towards St. Stephen’s clock tower.

This viewpoint showcases the bend in the lane as well as all the elements to create your perfect Instagram photo: the houses, flowers, and the cobblestone street.

Cockburn Street

Cars on a cobblestone street lined by shops in Edinburgh.

Cockburn Street is yet another one of the underrated Edinburgh Instagram spots. It’s got a beautiful curve, and the buildings are so nicely kept.

The street is also located right next to Edinburgh Waverley Station, so if you’re taking a train to get to the city, you have no excuse not to come to take a photo!

Since it’s a walking street, it’s usually pretty busy. If you really want to get a photo without anyone else in it, be sure to visit earlier in the morning or really late at night. I’m sure this street looks amazing when it’s all lit up!

To get a photo, as I did, you’ll want to stand all the way at the end of the street right before the curve. This allows you to snap an Instagrammable shot!

Dean Village

Colorful village homes along a river under a blue sky in Edinburgh.

One of the prettiest and most photogenic areas of Edinburgh is slightly off the beaten path, but its close proximity to the city centre makes it a popular spot for those who know about it.

Dean Village is only a 10-minute walk from Princes Street, but it feels like another world.

The fairytale houses and the striking Well Court building make this an incredibly picturesque gem, and over the years, it’s become an Instagram hit.

It feels like you’ve been transported back in time, and there are even still hints of the past grain mills that were there for over 800 years.

Dean Village is also set on the Water of Leith, and many people begin a 3-mile walk here to the Shore in Leith.

Then, they will start following the river and often stop off in nearby Stockbridge, one of Edinburgh’s fancier neighbourhoods with lots of great restaurants and shops.

Dean Village is the perfect place to visit on a summer’s day when the colours pop even more, but it feels magical whatever the weather.

National Museum of Scotland Roof

View of the Edinburgh skyline, with the historic castle on the left and old shops on the right.

One of the best and totally free Edinburgh Instagram spots has to be from the top of the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street.

Not only is it a wonderful (and did I mention free?!) museum with interactive exhibits from all over the world and Scotland ‘s history, but so few people know you can access the roof with views over Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile in one direction and Arthur’s Seat in the other.

The reason why very few people know it exists is that the roof is a little tricky to find. Follow signs for the lifts/elevators and travel as high as possible, and then take the stairs (don’t worry, there aren’t many!) out to the open roof.

There is always a staff member on hand to help you if you need further guidance.

The plants around the outside of the roof are the perfect tool to give your Instagram snaps some depth, so you might have to squat a little to capture an Insta-worthy photo!

Portobello Beach

bikes lined up by the beach in scotland.

Get outside the city centre for an afternoon and visit Portobello , a picturesque seaside suburb of Edinburgh. Here, you’ll find something not particularly common in Scotland—a long, sandy beach!

Portobello is an adorable little area, and the beach’s allure makes it a must-see, especially if you’re visiting Edinburgh in the summer. While Portobello isn’t always found on typical Edinburgh highlights lists , it should be on yours.

The water is cold for a swim, but many still tough it out! It can be refreshing on a hot summer day. It’s also a lovely spot to kayak, picnic, and play beach games. The promenade has some cute little cafés, too.

A beach is photogenic just about any time of the day, but Portobello’s is particularly moody on a misty Scottish morning around sunrise.

If you want to mix it up from the classic water-facing beach shot, wade into the water and take a gorgeous picture of the beach with Edinburgh’s medieval buildings in the background. It definitely makes for an interesting contrast.

Either way, Portobello is an underrated, unique area of Edinburgh you won’t regret visiting.

Portobello is one of the most underrated Edinburgh Instagram spots.

Princes Street Gardens

edinburgh castle view from princes street garden. A big statue is seen in the center.

What’s a visit to Edinburgh, Scotland, without a photo of the infamous castle? This is easily one of the top Edinburgh Instagram spots.

Since the castle sits at the top of a narrow hill, it can be difficult to get a good photo from the entrance of the castle.  The best spot I found for a view is from the Prince St. Gardens below.

It is really quite simple to find the gardens from Edinburgh Castle.  If walking down the Royal Mile away from the castle entrance, turn left onto Ramsay Lane.  It’s impossible to miss the gardens, which are more like a massive park.

Any entrance to the gardens will eventually lead to a great photo spot with a view of the castle.  My favorite spot is right in front of Ross Fountain toward the west end of the park.

Once you’ve got the shot, treat yourself to a dessert from The Fountain Cafe nearby! The park has so many beautiful areas to relax and enjoy the scenery while you snack.

Scott Monument

Silhouette of a monument and a ferris wheel at night.

Built in 1846, Scott Monument is one of the iconic Victorian Gothic architecture one cannot miss when travelling in Edinburgh.

This imposing monument stands in the centre of Princes Street, dedicated to Scottish Author Sir Walter Scott.  In fact, this is the biggest dedicated monument to a writer worldwide.

The gothic spire is 200 feet high, and the highest viewing platform can be reached after climbing 287 steps.

The steps do get narrow towards the end, but the strenuous climb is well worth it, as it offers great views of Edinburgh Castle, views of old town buildings in Royal Mile, new town view, Calton Hill, Princes Street, and the gardens.

The original colour of the monument was pale sandstone; however, over years, the marble darkened to this dark colour due to air pollution.

Fondly known as “gothic rocket,” Scott Monument is a great photographic opportunity and is certainly one of the Edinburgh Instagram spots you can’t miss.

Whether you climb the monument or not, you can still enjoy the monument from many corners of Edinburgh – pretty much from anywhere in Princes Street, Princes Street Gardens, Calton Hill, North Bridge, and St. Andrew Street.

NOTE: There is an admission fee to access the monument.

The Royal Mile

People walking on a cobblestone street lined with shops

The Royal Mile is the long connecting street from Edinburgh Castle to Edinburgh’s Old Town. It’s filled with a bunch of shops, museums, and history!

In fact, if you want to know more about the area, there are many tour guides that focus just on the Royal Mile.

However, it also makes for a great Instagram spot! The street is always bustling since it’s one of the more lively and busy areas of the city, so unless you want to wake up super early, be prepared to have other people in your photo.

You could easily try to take your photo without other people in it just by tilting your lens up to crop everyone completely out! This is a good time to practice different framing techniques, too.

Located right on the Royal Mile is also Camera Obscura, which is another great place to get some Instagrammable images.

Plate with a salad and egg.

Step through the giant red door of Timberyard , situated in the heart of Edinburgh, and be prepared to be thrilled by the fabulous food, drink, and service of this incredible restaurant.

The family-run restaurant has been wowing diners in the Scottish capital since 2012 and continues to please with its Nordic-influenced menus. Plus, it’s one of the best Edinburgh Instagram spots.

You may have guessed the restaurant is in a former timber yard dating back to the 19th century.

The striped back dining room is sleek, seductive, and relaxing at the same time; great for photo opportunities. It is the perfect background for outstanding ingredient-led cooking, which is also incredibly photogenic.

Each dish showcases local produce sourced from artisan producers found across Scotland. The chefs use a variety of techniques to bring out the flavours.

Pickling, smoking, and curing are at the forefront of the tasting menus, so the range of colours on the plate is fabulous. The food is packed with flavour and looks absolutely beautiful.

Getting a great Instagram-worthy photo here is easy as the food is so pretty and the table settings so classy.

Your only challenge is the dimmed lighting if you are visiting in the evening, so use the appropriate settings on your camera. Turning up the ISO or using a quicker lens will help.

Don’t be tempted to use a flash, as your photo will lose its detail. Putting a white napkin behind your plate can help reduce shadows, and holding said napkin above your place could reduce the glare of spotlights.

Timberyard is a must-visit when you are in Edinburgh: a total treat for the senses.

Recommended by Melanie from Two Plus Dogs .

No list of the top Edinburgh Instagram spots would be complete without The Vennel .

Located off Edinburgh’s Grass Market and directly across the road from the Fiddlers Arms pub, this beautiful alleyway offers one of the most scenic views of Edinburgh Castle.

For the best Instagram shot, head up the old staircase from Grass Market.  Set up your shot at the top of the steps, looking down the alleyway.

This viewpoint provides the perfect photogenic scene of one of  Scotland’s best castles  perched atop its hill overlooking the city.

The narrow street itself provides the framing for the perfect Insta-worthy shot with its chimney-topped brick buildings and charming street lamps.

As the city can often be wet and dreary (or dreich as the locals call it!), take a colourful prop with you to add a splash of vibrancy to the shot.

A huge bonus to this picturesque view is the lack of crowds.  It is possible to visit at any time of day and capture incredible shots!

You will find a few people passing through, but with a little patience, it’s very easy to capture a shot without anyone else in it.

Victoria Street

People walking next to colorful storefronts on a cobblestone street

Victoria Street is arguably one of the most beautiful Edinburgh Instagram spots in all of the city! It was used as inspiration for J.K. Rowling’s Diagon Alley from the Harry Potter series, and it’s actually one of the many Harry Potter sights in Edinburgh.

The street is curved and is filled with a whole bunch of cute shops that are in beautiful colors! The best way to get a photo like mine for Instagram is to stand at the top end of the street and look down.

You could get the opposite photo by standing at the other end of the street if you wanted!

Within the same area of Victoria Street is Greyfriars Kirkyard, the National Museum of Scotland, and the Elephant House. You could easily visit a lot of top Edinburgh and Harry Potter sights within an hour!

There are some great shops on the street, too, that I recommend checking out. Visit Oink for some of the best hog roast sandwiches, and visit The Boy Wizard to purchase some Harry Potter merchandise!

St. Giles’ Cathedral

scotland tourism instagram

St. Giles’ Cathedral is a must-visit destination for any Instagrammer in Edinburgh. This iconic building is steeped in history, featuring stunning medieval Gothic architecture and ornate details.

As one of the most iconic locations in Scotland’s capital, it makes for an amazing backdrop for photos.

To get the best shots from this beautiful place, here are some photo tips:

  • Get there earlier in the day to avoid the crowds.
  • Be aware of your angles; walk around the cathedral to capture it from different viewpoints.
  • Don’t forget about the details. While you’ll certainly want to capture some sweeping shots of the entire building, don’t forget about zooming in on smaller details.

Keep in mind that to take photos inside of the cathedral, you do need to purchase a photo permit for a few pounds upon entering.

Grassmarket

scotland tourism instagram

Another of the most Instagrammable places in Edinburgh is Grassmarket ! This is a historic marketplace in Edinburgh’s picturesque Old Town. It was extremely popular back in the 14th century and has had lots of history over the years.

The market here does still take place (as of 2023) on Saturdays, but be sure to do some research before going. If you’re visiting on a weekend, though, you might just luck out!

As far as taking pictures here, be sure to just walk around and take photos of the many colorful storefronts that line the area. You never know what you might find. There’s a wide arrange of pubs, restaurants, shops, and more.

Again, this is another very popular walkable area, so you may run into lots of other people. If you want to avoid them, try to go out earlier in the morning to take your Edinburgh photos.

White Horse Close

When it comes to photo spots in Edinburgh, White Horse Close is one of the more unique ones.

Located on the Royal Mile, the close features picturesque buildings that will make you feel like you’re stepping back in time. Edinburgh’s rich used to live in closes like these.

It was officially restored in the latter half of the 1900s. It may be a bit hard to find (honestly, a lot of tourists tend to miss this location from what we’ve heard), so be sure to type it into your phone to find the exact location.

Any time of day is great for a photo here, but if you can come around sunrise or sunset, you can get a beautiful photo of the buildings with the colors of the sun hitting them just right.

Ramsay Garden

scotland tourism instagram

If you want a photo of aesthetic places in Edinburgh, look no further than Ramsay Garden .

I know what you’re thinking – “Isn’t Ramsay Garden an apartment complex?” And, YES, it is, but it’s so picturesque. I mean, just look at that photo, right?

They’re situated in Edinburgh’s Castlehill area, and you can easily snap a photo like the one above just by walking by. Obviously, be respectful because these are private apartment buildings, but the exterior of the buildings is breathtaking.

Historically, the buildings were built back in the 1700s and even served a purpose as student housing for a while. Great photos can be taken any time of day but can be beautiful in the morning.

Belford Mews

Last but certainly not least is Belford Mews , one of the best photo spots in Edinburgh.

The Belford Mews are located in Dean Village (earlier on this list), but they’re incredibly picturesque brick buildings with unique-covered doors. It can be fun to just walk around the area here to get some great photos.

Again, to avoid crowds, the best time to go and take a photo is in the early morning. This way, you won’t have to edit anyone out in your photos!

Historically, they used to be stables and have since been converted into homes. They almost feel Harry Potter -esque. The atmosphere is extremely calm and you can easily use a tripod here

Here are the best tips for taking photos in Edinburgh for the ‘gram.

  • Get there early – beat the crowds and have more freedom to explore!

  • Take lots of shots – you never know which one will turn out best! (This tip has saved me many times. Take more photos than you need.)

Scotland in a square: 5 scottish adventure instagrammers.

If you follow me in Instagram (don’t tell me you don’t! @watchmesee ) you know how much I love sharing not only my own photo updates from my travels and life in Glasgow, I also love to give a shout out to some of my favourite travel bloggers and adventurers out there. I get much of my inspiration for travelling around Scotland from Instagram, especially when it comes new peaks to climb, national parks to explore or lochs to kayak. Here are some of my favourite Scottish adventurers of Instagram who keep sharing their best adventure moments with us every day.

This post contains affiliate links from which I may make a commission. Find out more here . All opinions are my own.

1) Ellis O’Connor

Ellis O’Connor is a Scottish artist and photographer and if you follow her on Instagram be reassured that she will take you to the most remote places around the country. The mountains and the sea are never far in her snapshots and every now and then she shares her artwork inspired by the incredible Scottish landscape with us.

Follow Ellis at @ellisoconnor

My Favourite Scottish Adventurers on Instagram: Ellis O'Connor

2) James Irvine

James Irvine is one of those people whose photo I admire so much, but could never imagine to go on the same kind of adventures. We’re speaking surfing in Shetland here and a) I’m terrible on a surfboard and b) do you know how cold that water is?! James also skateboards, skies, mountain bikes, climbs and does all other sorts of crazy outdoor sports.

Follow James at @jamesirvine_

My Favourite Scottish Adventurers on Instagram: James Irvine

3) Steve Oates

Steve Oates is part of a collective of photographers sharing their love for the Scottish mountains called The Highland Collective. His personal feed is very much like what you’d expect it to look like – loads of mountain ranges, hiking adventures and ‘bearded man on mountain’-poses!

Follow Steve on @wilde_oates

My Favourite Scottish Adventurers on Instagram: Steve Oates

4) Jason Turner

Jason is based in Edinburgh but is far from sticking to the streets of the town – he constantly heads out into the Highlands and other gorgeous sceneries all over Scotland and shares his best hiking pics with us day after day. His two main photo subjects are the Scottish hills and his partner Kirsty, who by the way has a pretty rad Instagram account herself!

Follow Jason and Kirsty at @jasonjpturner and @kirstyaturner

My Favourite Scottish Adventurers on Instagram: Jason Turner

5) Katrina Stewart

Katrina is pursuing an adventure of her own kind – whenever the Scottish Highlands or islands call, she and her family jump into their lime green Volkswagen bus and hit the road. When she’s not sharing her best photos on Instagram she blogs about her trips on her website – you won’t need more than that to make you want to visit Scotland!

Follow Katrina at @katstewart01

My Favourite Scottish Adventurers on Instagram: Katrina Stewart

I don’t need a couple of photographers to convince me that Scotland is an adventurously beautiful country, but these are five accounts that I love to follow for inspiration for my own upcoming trips.

Do you know of any other Scottish adventure Instagrammers that I should check out?

Scotland’s most ‘Instagrammable’ tourist destinations revealed

scotland tourism instagram

A new study reveals that Edinburgh Castle is the most Instagrammable destination in Scotland, with a total of 723,165 posts featuring its hashtag.

(Lead Image: Edinburgh Castle Instagram)

Private Tours Scotland analyzed Instagram data for 30 popular Scottish tourist destinations, to uncover which have been tagged the most on the platform by users.

Edinburgh Castle takes the crown as the most Instagrammable spot in Scotland, with an impressive 723,165 posts using the hashtag, #edinburghcastle. Standing on Castle Rock in the country’s capital, Edinburgh Castle is one of the oldest fortified places in Europe. The castle holds the oldest Crown jewels in Britain, The Honours of Scotland, making this spot a must-see destination for visitors in the capital. An adult ticket costs £19.50 ($37.44) to visit and it is open for visitors from 9:30 to 18:00 every day during the summer period.

Closely following in second place is Glencoe, with 607,634 posts featuring the hashtag #glencoe. Located within Lochaber Geopark in the Highlands, the deep valley and towering mountains of Glen Coe were formed over millennia of shifting glaciers and volcanic eruptions, making it a perfect destination for explorers.

The third most Instagrammable destination in Scotland is Loch Lomond, with 596,965 posts using the hashtag, #lochlomond. This beautiful freshwater loch crosses the Highland Boundary Fault and is surrounded by charming villages, rolling countryside and hills. There is also access to the water for those seeking activities such as paddle boarding, open water swimming and kayaking.

The world-famous Loch Ness ranks fourth, with 527,939 posts featuring its hashtag on the social media platform. Loch Ness contains more water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined, making it the most voluminous lake in the UK. Take a visit to Loch Ness to find out if a monster really does lurk in the deep…

In fifth place is Cairngorms National Park, with a total of 331,923 Instagram posts using its hashtag. Cairngorms is the UK’s largest national park, with breath-taking landscapes including the wild mountains, heather moorlands, forests, and the wetlands and rivers which wind through the flood plains.

Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh takes the sixth spot, with 305,598 posts using its hashtag. As the highest point of Holyrood Park, Arthur’s Seat is an ancient volcano that sits 251 metres above sea level, giving a spectacular view of the city. Access is free for visitors and is open all year round.

Following in seventh place is Scotland’s largest mountain, Ben Nevis, with a total of 276,055 posts featuring its hashtag. The legendary peak of Ben Nevis towers above glistening lochans and deep glacial valleys, with two main walking routes depending on your hiking experience. For those wanting to take the gondola, an adult day pass will cost £24.95 ($47.90).

The Isle of Arran is the eighth most Instagrammable spot, with 149,863 posts. This island has an ever-changing coastline, dramatic mountain peaks, luscious forests, and stunning beaches to suit all visitors.

In ninth place is Eilean Donan Castle, with a total of 108,495 hastagged Instagram posts. One of the most recognised castles in Scotland, this iconic monument overlooks the Isle of Skye, where three sea-lochs meet, and is surrounded by the forested mountains of Kintail. An adult ticket costs £12 ($23.04) to visit this truly beautiful destination.

Completing the ten most Instagrammable destinations in Scotland is Stirling Castle, with 92,983 posts using its hashtag. Once a favoured residence of the Stewart kings and queens, Stirling Castle offers fascinating exhibitions and beautiful gardens to explore at your leisure. Access to the castle is priced at £16.50 ($31.68) for an adult ticket.

Struan Baird, co-founder of Private Tours Scotland, commented on the findings:

“Discovering the most Instagrammable destinations in Scotland offers a unique insight into the country’s most popular and picture-perfect spots for tourists.

“From spectacular lochs and mountains to fascinating castles rich with history, this data showcases the appreciation of Scotland’s beauty from tourists and locals, hopefully providing inspiration for your next trip.”

Top Scottish Travel Content Creators To Follow In 2024

Scottish Travel Content Creators

Let’s celebrate the talent of our Scottish lads and lassies with a huge list of the Best Scottish Travel Content Creators ! We Scots are blessed with notoriously magnificent landscapes which have inspired many content creators across the country. This list may not be one with creators that have the largest following or the best skills, but more of a catalogue to those dark horses and well-known magicians within the industry.

Within this list, you will find photographers, bloggers and content creators. Similarly, there are some who have chosen to stay within Scotland and then those who have travelled further afield to spread their Scottish banter around the world.

Table of Contents

Edward fitzpatrick, sarah afiqah rodgers, johnny stills, connor mollison, eilidh cameron, highlands2hammocks, the chaotic scot, adventures around scotland, stories my suitcase could tell, my veggie travels, ross jennings, two scots abroad, scottish photographers on instagram.

First off, we have our photography enthusiasts. These creators have mastered their art, and share the results for us all to enjoy on Instagram. So, without further ado and in no particular order…

At the time of writing this, Eddie had just completed one of the most challenging long-distance walks in the UK – The Cape Wrath Trail. I’m still trying to figure out his secret of putting up with the biggest clouds of midges I have ever seen!

The #tinysarah of Instagram… Sarah has probably already appeared on your newsfeed through the many feature pages that rightfully showcase her portfolio of shots. Her dreamy, minimalistic grid is a credit to Scotland’s beauty!

Johnny Stills has the very essence of a strong Scottish grid on Instagram. From the capital city through the Highlands to the many coastlines, Johnny’s portfolio of content features many different corners of our bonnie Scotland.

As a young photographer and one of our Scottish travel content creators, Dan Munro has managed to capture many magical moments across Scotland. Just check out his feed… Every photo makes Scotland look like a fairytale!

With over 21K followers… I’m surprised I’d never come across Connor’s work before now. Whilst he may be based in Edinburgh and Glasgow, he’s managed to explore and promote the beauty of many faraway corners in Scotland.

There wouldn’t be a list of Scottish creators without Ian G. Black – the king of Edinburgh content on Instagram. Ian’s built a huge name for himself as a Scottish photographer, influencer and photo tour guide for the prestigious 5-star Balmoral Hotel. He prides himself on having worked with the likes of Glenmorangie, SonyXperia, Glen Moray and Walker Slater.

Eilidh Cameron is a 20-something-year-old photographer. As a native of our beloved west coast, she has an abundance of beautiful bangers within her portfolio. It wouldn’t be surprising if Visit Scotland have her on speed dial too!

Scottish Travel Bloggers

The lovely Gemma and Campbell are two Scottish creators who have created a travel blog, and a YouTube channel. From a working holiday visa in Australia to cycling the east coast of Italy, wild camping along the NC500 and more recently, driving their motorhome across Scotland… Highland2Hammocks have many adventures to share!

The ‘ Scottish Travel Blog Packed with Fun, Food & Inspiration ‘. Kay Gillespie’s passion to promote Scotland is infectious. Her blog includes countless itineraries, tips and ‘things to do’ blogs about both the mainland and the Scottish islands.

Created in 2014, Susanne’s aim with ‘Adventures Around Scotland’ isn’t just to encourage foreigners to visit Scotland, but to inspire the locals to explore more of their home nation too. This blog is filled to the brim with recommendations, reviews, city guides, camping tips and suggested walks. There is no way you’ll leave her page still wondering what to do!

I, personally, have found Katie to be very influential in my journey to becoming a Scottish travel blogger. Not only does she have the exact same name, but she also shares a similar connection to the Scottish Islands.

The Scottish Highland & Islands can tend to feel like a tiny corner of the world. However, once I had followed the journey of a fellow Katie moving from the Outer Hebrides to New York City and making a life for herself as an award-winning travel blogger, I’d felt more inspired than ever. Having been published and featured in, for example, Buzzfeed, BBC.com, Cosmopolitan and National Geographic Traveller, I am proud to say that she is an asset to the Macleod Clan!

Sarah’s travel blog, My Veggie Travels, has popped up within many of my Google searches! So, it’s no wonder that she’s worked alongside many of Scotland’s tourism brands such as Visit Scotland. Also, any vegetarians out there? This blog will be of particular use to you.

The Scots Who’ve Gone Abroad

As someone on a mission to visit as many countries as possible too when I heard about Ross Jenning’s ambitious travel mission he had me instantly hooked. There’s no way I could continue scrolling without hitting the follow button to see how this would plan out. Can you believe that he is aiming to be the first Scot to play his bagpipes in every country of the world?!

Yes, that’s me! If there’s going to be a giant list of Scottish folk then there is no way I could exclude myself. I’m simply far too patriotic!

Having said that, I was obviously not 100% settled within my own country as I have spent the last 8 years travelling the world as much as possible. At first, I started blogging my backpacking adventures alongside my university studies. Once I graduated, I moved to London where I crafted my design career within a 9-5 job in advertising. I lasted two years in the big city before quitting my job and becoming a digital nomad. You can read more about my route to a lifestyle of full-time travel here.

If one Scot is not enough… Then have two! This pairing is well worth hitting the follow button as they share their adventures and more recently, their journey of being full-time travel bloggers. Gemma and Craig have documented adventures such as eloping in Austin, walking the West Highland Way and backpacking Asia.

Are you now as inspired as I am to swing that backpack around your shoulders, unfold that drone, unclip the lens cap and start collecting bangers? These content creators certainly contribute to my personal daily inspiration, but which Scottish bloggers and photographers influence you? Let me know in the comments!

Let’s go! @katie.maree

The Aye Life

The Aye Life - Go-Hi Scotland Travel App

Meet Victoria and Scott, they became Scottish bloggers overnight when they created their travel and lifestyle blog ‘ The Aye Life ’, which is the Scottish equivalent of the good life. They decided to make the leap to a fancy-free life in 2021, selling their house and trading it for a dream life on the road in search of Coorie and Craic.

They describe ‘Coorie’ as a Scottish phrase with various meanings, including ‘cosy’ and ‘snuggling in,’ it also defines the type of Scottish lifestyle that The Aye Life is all about. Wild swims, big bonnie lochs, hearty scran and the ‘cooriest’ of Scottish surroundings. The term ‘Craic’ describes the kind of banter that they have on a daily basis. ‘Craic’ is laughs, great company and all kinds of Scottish fun and frolics. Tighten your braces and pour a heavy dram, cause you’re in for a ride!

The Chaotic Scot

The Chaotic Scot - Go-Hi Scotland Travel App

Kay discovered a life changing passion for promoting Scotland’s beautiful scenery and rich history when she became a tour guide. She launched her Scottish travel blog ‘ The Chaotic Scot ’ in 2013, and five years later made the leap from day job to travelling around Scotland as a full-time travel blogger and itinerary planner.

Kay’s blog focuses on Scottish islands, cute and quirky places to stay, hearty food and how to travel around Scotland without a car. Her mission is to inspire fellow Scots and people from around the world to place Scotland at the top of their travel wish-list, and to experience the very best of what the country has to offer.

She regularly lives up to her ‘chaotic’ name, forgetting things, losing stuff, getting lost, sustaining injuries and, in Kay’s words, generally making an eejit of herself!

Finding Unexpected Joy on an Organized Day Tour Across Scotland

By Vicki Denig

I’ll never forget staring into the deep, black waters of Loch Ness. The darkness of the lake beautifully highlighted the fat, white snowflakes falling from puffy, gray skies above. This, I remember thinking, was the untouched natural beauty of Scotland that so many of my travel writer friends had raved about. It was one of the most breathtaking winter scenes I’d experienced in my life—and I would never have found myself there if it weren’t for an organized day tour.

This past winter, in lieu of exchanging Christmas gifts, my partner and I decided to venture over to Scotland for a four-day weekend. The whisky-soaked mecca of Islay has long been a bucket-list destination for me, a writer focusing on wine and spirits—but venturing all the way to the remote island would have taken up too much of our long January weekend. To get our fill of belly-warming whisky in a string of cozy pubs and hotel bars, stopping in Edinburgh was a no-brainer. While I was also charmed by the idea of Glasgow’s edginess and its abundance of accessible distilleries, I still yearned for a way to see the more rural parts of Scotland in our short time there.

The Scottish capital artfully balances the very old with the new and exciting.

Beyond the main monuments and city-based distilleries suggested, my internet searches left us with dozens of day tour recommendations through the Scottish Highlands . In my mind, organized day tours were bound to be filled with the kind of tourist traps I’d avoided most of my adult life, not to mention plenty of the selfie-stick wielding travelers I dreaded. I almost turned the other way, but the idea of dramatic, mountainous terrain only surpassed by rolling green hills studded with medieval castles and plenty of long-haired cows made me willing to take the chance.

“What do you think of an 11-hour tour through the Scottish Highlands?” I asked my partner in the living room of my Manhattan apartment. “Sounds incredible,” he responded. I began to mentally weigh the cons: potentially corny stops, a voluble guide—or worse still, strange travel companions. But there were also solid pros: Fitting in the natural beauty we would otherwise miss, without having to organize, plan, or think about anything along the way.

As a Type A traveler, I was already overplanning Edinburgh, exhausting myself over how many of the 19 industry-approved cocktail bars we’d be able to fit into 48 hours. The idea of enjoying a stress-free day of sightseeing without having to plan a thing? Very appealing. The cherry on the top was the £57 per person pirice tag. With a click of a button and for the price of a few drinks, we were booked to hit Glencoe, Loch Ness, and the Highlands—all in a single day.

Canoeing through the beautiful Caledonian Canal near Fort William

Less than 24 hours after arriving in Glasgow, we awoke at an ungodly hour to head over to the central bus station and start the day. We trudged through dark, dead-empty streets to eventually be greeted by a cheery—but not overly peppy, I noted—guide, and five other travelers. The white sprinter van had the company’s name, Rabbie’s, sprawled across the side in blue lettering. We climbed in along with a couple in their 40s, their two teenage daughters, and an Australian woman traveling solo .

“Looks like there’s just seven of us today!” the guide exclaimed. My partner and I seized the opportunity to take over two full rows in the back, leaving the family to occupy the center of the van and the solo traveler to hold down the fort in front with the guide, who doubled as our driver. Our fearless leader started the van and gave us all some time to settle in, turning on some music instead. The day was off to a good start.

Our route took us from the vast wilderness of Rannoch Moor to the breathtaking landscapes of Gelncoe , followed by the massive fault line of Great Glen. The van weaved through the mountainous Highlands, glassy lakes, and frosty hillsides. As I leaned against the window, I took in the sight of snow-dusted hills, many of which had turned from their summery emerald green to a rusty orange. The sun tried its best to peek through, although the weather remained a signature gray.

After spending the morning traversing through hillsides, we made it to the quaint town of Fort Augustus, home to just 650 people (as well as beautiful boat-bobbing views along the Caledonian Canal). Our group disembarked and hopped on an hour-long boat cruise on Loch Ness. At this point, we were just over halfway through the day—and more than 140 miles from Glasgow. From gazing upon the famed Three Sisters of Glencoe to snaking our way back home through the Grampian Mountains, our knowledge of Scotland’s geography and history was growing with each stop.

For me, the best part of the Highlands day tour was simply the act of slowing down from our packed city itinerary and surrendering to the natural beauty around us—something not nearly as achievable, if even possible, in the bustle of Edinburgh and Glasgow. The simple act of looking out a window and letting go offered tranquility I hadn’t experienced in longer than I could remember.

I also genuinely appreciated all the down time provided by our tour guide. This offered mental reprieve from all of the new information we were learning—but also enabled the socializing. We were given solo opportunities to explore most of the destinations at our own pace. For my partner and I, this meant eating fish and chips for lunch at a traditional pub, as well as tasting some local whiskies at a cozy hotel bar by ourselves.

By the end of the tour, we’d traversed well over 250 miles through the heart of Scotland. I thought about my initial hesitation about giving into such the activity; my preconceived notions of day tours had been proven completely wrong. In fact, it's quite cool to place your trust in the hands of a knowledgeable guide, and pretty adventurous to surrender to a group of strangers—embarking on a journey into the unknown together. Sure, some of the stops were a bit kitschy, and a few selfie sticks will almost certainly always be present on group trips these days, but the long-lasting memories of journeying into the vastness of a place offer far bigger payoff.

In addition to the unforgettable views we saw, the relief of not agonizing over every last planning detail was a vacation in itself. It was official: I was unexpectedly converted by the merits of an organized day tour.

The following day, we left Glasgow behind and set off to Edinburgh—and the first thing we booked was a Big Bus tour. I boarded it excited and expectant, with eyes wide open and my curious, exploratory spirit intact.

Scotland’s Tourism Bounces Back, Surpassing Pre-Pandemic Levels!

Photo of author

May 17, 2024

EDINBURGH, Scotland — In a remarkable turnaround, Scotland’s tourism industry has not only recovered from the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic but has also surpassed pre-pandemic levels , setting a new record for international visitors in 2023.

Kilchurn Castle Scotland

According to a passenger survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics, Scotland welcomed an impressive 3.9 million overseas tourists last year, a staggering 15% increase compared to 2019 . This figure surpasses the previous record of 3.7 million international visits set in 2018.

Edinburgh remains the most visited city outside of London , attracting 2.3 million visitors and surpassing Manchester with 1.7 million visits and Birmingham with 934,000 visits.

The surge in visitors has also translated into a significant boost for the Scottish economy, with inbound visitors spending £3.5 billion in 2023 , up 13% from the previous year and a remarkable 41% from 2019.

It seems that not only are more tourists flocking to Scotland, but they are also more willing to part with their hard-earned cash while enjoying the country’s stunning landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality.

Malcolm Roughead, chief executive of VisitScotland, hailed these figures as a “turning point for tourism in Scotland.” He emphasized that Scotland is the only region in the United Kingdom to have reached this milestone, a testament to the strength of Scotland’s tourism offering and the global appeal of its attractions.

“Our international visitors are hugely important to Scotland’s tourism industry, as well as the wider economy,” Roughead said. “They often stay longer and spend more, generating several billions of pounds annually, supporting a wide range of businesses, jobs, and communities across the country.”

The majority of international visitors to Scotland in 2023 came from Europe, accounting for 58% of all inbound visits, followed by North America at 24%.

The “other countries” category, which includes Australia and China, saw the most significant increase compared to 2022, with a whopping 53% growth in visitor numbers.

While Scotland’s tourism industry is undoubtedly celebrating this remarkable achievement, other parts of the United Kingdom are also experiencing growth in visitor numbers compared to 2022, albeit not yet reaching the heights of their pre-pandemic levels.

Looking ahead, early feedback from tourism businesses, travel trade, and airline partners suggests that the international demand for Scottish tourism is set to continue into 2024 .

Visitors are increasingly interested in exploring lesser-known locations in Scotland and visiting at different times of the year , a trend that could help alleviate the pressure on popular tourist hotspots during peak seasons.

VisitScotland remains focused on sustainably growing the value of Scotland’s visitor economy, encouraging regional and seasonal spread to ensure that Scotland remains a competitive year-round destination.

With its combination of breathtaking natural beauty , the fascinating history , and warm, welcoming people, it seems that Scotland’s tourism industry is well-positioned to continue its impressive growth in the years to come.
