A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO THE RUPIN PASS TREK

image

Introduction

Trekking through the Rupin Pass, located at a towering altitude of 4650 meters, is an experience that’s as challenging as it is rewarding. Straddling the boundary between the Indian states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, this high-altitude trek provides a spectacular passageway through the mighty Himalayas. But, is the Rupin Pass trek as difficult as it’s often made out to be? Let’s delve into the details and find out.

Rupin Pass: An Overview

The Rupin Pass trek is a breathtaking journey that takes you through diverse terrains, from verdant meadows and dense forests to icy landscapes. The trek also offers an up-close view of the Kinner Kailash range in the north and the expansive Rupin valley in the south. However, the true charm of this trek lies in following the course of the Rupin River to its source at the Rupin Waterfall.

Difficulty Level: Understanding the Challenge

When it comes to difficulty, the Rupin Pass trek is classified as ‘moderate-difficult ’. It’s important to note that this classification is not arbitrary but based on certain factors such as the trek gradient, ascent and descent, distance to be covered each day, and the terrain. The trek begins at an altitude of 1580 meters and gradually ascends to 4657 meters over a span of six days. The initial two days are relatively easier, with the trek becoming more challenging as you progress.

The Trails of Rupin Pass

The trek routes of Rupin Pass are a mix of gentle inclines and steep descents. However, the overall trek gradient is a steady upward climb, especially towards Dhanderas Thatch campsite on the sixth day. Post this point, the trail steepens and is often covered with snow, making the trek more strenuous.

Challenges on the Rupin Pass Trek

Challenge 1: steep snow trek from dhanderas thatch to upper waterfall camp.

One of the most challenging sections of the trek is the ascent from Dhanderas Thatch to the Upper Waterfall Camp. This stretch requires navigating through snow patches and loose rocks, often on slippery terrain. However, with the right preparation and guidance, this section can be conquered successfully.

Challenge 2: Climbing the Rupin Pass Gully

The day of the summit is undoubtedly the most adventurous and challenging part of the trek. The Rupin Pass Gully, a half tube cut out of the mountainside, presents a steep 200-meter ascent at an angle of 60-70 degrees. Climbing the gully requires not just physical strength but also mental tenacity.

Fitness Levels Required for the Rupin Pass Trek

Given the demanding nature of the trek, it’s crucial to have a good level of physical fitness. A regular regimen of jogging or running, along with strength training exercises like squats and lunges, can help build the stamina and endurance required for the trek.

Gear Required for the Rupin Pass Trek

While most of the trekking gear like tents, sleeping bags, crampons, snow boots, and ice axes will be provided, trekkers will need to bring along their own backpacks and trekking shoes. It’s also advisable to carry a trekking pole for additional support and stability on the rough terrain.

Skills Required for Rupin Pass Trek

Trekking through the Rupin Pass requires certain skills , particularly for navigating through the snow-covered sections. Trekkers will be trained on how to use the various trekking equipment and how to navigate through slippery slopes safely.

The Rupin Pass trek is an exhilarating experience that pushes trekkers to their limits while rewarding them with stunning views of the Himalayas. However, it’s crucial to be well-prepared in terms of fitness and gear, and to have a good understanding of the challenges that lie ahead. With the right preparation and mindset, the Rupin Pass trek can be an adventure of a lifetime

Remember, the challenges of the Rupin Pass trek are part of what makes it such an unforgettable experience. So gear up, train well, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!

How-Rupin-Pass-Looks-On-Day-1

Bawta to Jakha

Today you will be crossing the highest and the last village of this trek. Plus the trail will be continuous ascent for 4-5 hours. So embrace all the energy before beginning on the jaunt on the zig-zag mixed trail.

After a moderate ascent till Jiskun there will be a slight descending trail. You can find a wooden bridge between the dense forest. The route magically gets ascending in zig-zag fashion from the bridge. Refill your bottles at Selwan Khad as this is the last water point of today. Do not worry, there are many tea shops on the way for more water. Rest in your peaceful home stay at night.

How-Rupin-Pass-Looks-On-Day-2

Jakha to Dandreyash Thatch

Waking up at the campsite near Jhaka Village is sheer bliss. The trail is well defined, passes through the field of Jhaka village, and enters a forest where trees of fir stand tall depicting centuries old, pristine civilization. A turn in the trail past crossing the forest and landscapes changes itself to snow patches. Follow the snow bridge over Rupin, cross the bridge and walk on a narrow trail till another wooden bridge.

Half an hour more walk on the boulders and hoping through the streams flowing within the rocky paths along the left of Rupin, you will enter another forest, on which rest the Rhododendron trees of a different colour.

Another walk of a few kilometres and you are at Saruwas Thatch. Relax well and admire nature’s different shades on the perfect campsite, a serene u shaped valley in the middle of trees, with the sight of Rupin waterfall far away. Following this is the route filled with snow patches on the mountainside. The sacred silver birch trees (Bhoj Trees) will accompany you till the entrance of the forests. Move upwards through the forests and you will find yourself on the verge of U shaped valley. The enchanting sights from the lip of the valley, thousands of waterfalls rushing down below you are all set to hypnotize you for a movement.

Move downward to reach down to the valley through green and yellow meadows, after crossing a series of snow bridges, and you are in the middle of a valley, Dhanderas Thatch.

get ready to relax and then indulge in some fun activities organized by our to enjoy one of the most admiring and biggest known meadows of the Himalayan Range.

How-Rupin-Pass-Looks-On-Day-3

Dandreyash Thatch to Upper Waterfall

The altitude from Dhanderas to Upper Waterfall Camp is about 4000 meters which is enough to make you vulnerable to AMS. We shall take the necessary precautions to keep away from any altitude problems. Our team will also take a short session to teach you the skills of trekking in snow such as sliding on snow, sidestepping and cutting through the snow.

After proper acclimatization, you need to reach the base of Dhanderas, and from there, the trek crosses through many rivulets of Rupin. Make your way to the snow patch of the first waterfall through the marigold flowers. After a steady and careful walk on the rocks along the hill you can now see a trail going in between through the thick snow.

Your learned techniques will come is use as you have to cut your path to another vast snow bridge. This is the last but the ultimate snow bridge offering you the Rupin Water coming just above your head and getting down below your feet. A sharp but short climb after crossing the bridge and you are all set to get relaxed and enjoy your campsite.

How-Rupin-Pass-Looks-On-Day-4

Upper Waterfall to Ronti Gad, cross Rupin Pass

Longest trail of Rupin Pass begins with a steep ascent, with a bumper gain in altitude. An hour of climbing, then take left trail and discover totally different and amazing sights from the Rati Pheri campsite.

The only views from Rati Pheri are of the expanse of thick snow stretched all over, making your paths through them is your next exhausting task for the day to reach Rupin Pass Gully. We shall take utmost care here as the snow is very thick and the trails are not clearly defined. At Rupin Pass we will serve you with some refreshment to regain your energy for the next adventurous climb to Rupin Pass.

The trail to Rupin pass is short but very uncertain and has risks of loose stones falling from above. Our team will suggest you walk in line carefully putting your every step forward.

Rupin Pass cut from a hollow shaped region marks the beginning of Dhauladhar Range. A bit of descendant and you are ready to experience the next adventure to slide down the snow to reach Rukti Gad.

Way to Ronti Gad is a gentle walk followed by a sharp descendant. Camping at the coldest yet charming campsite amidst the mountains covered with snow.

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. How to choose the right trek?

Choosing the right trek for a beginner can be a bit overwhelming as there are many factors to consider such as distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, weather, and time of year. Here are some tips that can help you choose the right trek for a beginner:

1. Determine fitness level:  Assess the fitness level of the beginner to understand their physical capabilities. This will help you select a trek that is challenging but not too difficult.

2. Choose a well-traveled trail:  A well-traveled trail will have more amenities such as signposts, water stations, and shelter. It is also safer as there will be other hikers on the trail.

3. Consider the length of the trek:  For beginners, it is recommended to start with a shorter trek that can be completed in a day or two. This will help them get acclimatized to trekking and build their confidence.

4. Look for gradual elevation gain:  Choose a trek with a gradual elevation gain rather than steep ascents. This will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.

5. Check the weather:  Check the weather forecast before selecting a trek. Avoid treks during the monsoon season or winter when the trails can be slippery or dangerous.

HIGHEST ALTITUDE

If there is a trek in India that surprises you at every turn, it has to be the Rupin Pass trek. This trek is like an orchestra, building momentum with surprises in scenery every hour. You’ll never see it coming. Allow us to take you through the trek.

To begin with, Rupin Pass is a high altitude mountain pass, climbing to 15,250 feet. The adventure and thrill of ascending to such an altitude in the Indian Himalayas makes it a terrific trek on its own. And then come the surprises.

The surprises begin even before the trek, on your drive from Rohru over the Chainsheel Pass. Unpaved roads wind uphill through forests, changing views by the minute. The forest is so unique that you will want to step out of your vehicle now and then to admire it. At around 11,000 feet, you burst out of the forests into grasslands. These grasslands stretch far and wide. They last until you reach the Chainsheel Pass.

This is just a precursor to the trek.

On the first day of your trek, the hanging village of Jakha, perched on a ridge, takes you by surprise. The next day, the sudden appearance of the tall and dark coniferous forest about an hour outside Jakha is jaw-dropping. The abrupt end of the forest and the sudden appearance of a snow bridge below you (if early in the season) are equally mind-boggling.

We are yet to get to Day 2, where the islands of Saruwas Thatch and a sudden view of the famous Rupin Waterfall catch you by surprise. Even though you have heard the waterfall is tall, its sheer 1,500 ft drop takes you by surprise.

The perfectly “U” shaped glacial valley of Dhanderas Thatch, with hundreds of waterfalls streaming down, make you marvel at how such formations naturally exist. The following day, climbing to the top of the Rupin waterfall over its numerous snow bridges is unexpected. Then, out of the blue, you get to the upper waterfall campsite, with the Rupin river calmly gliding alongside your camp.

After a long climb from the upper waterfall camp, you step into the vast snowfields of Rata Pheri. It is an alpine setting that is least expected.

From the edges of Rata Pheri, the first sight of the Rupin gully leaves you in awe, accompanied by an adrenaline rush. When you realise you have to climb the gully to get to the pass, it is an adventure that trekkers least expect.

The climb to the knife-edged Rupin Pass, the vast slides on the snow after that, and the long grassy descent to the last Ronti Gad campsite are new surprises on the other side.

The Rupin Pass trek is so full of quick scenery changes that it leaves trekkers breathless until the end. Only when you reach the road at Sangla, do the surprises finally end.

Count the sudden scenery changes as you do the Rupin Pass trek. It is a unique combination of high-altitude adventure with stunning changes in scenery —a combination so rare that it makes the Rupin Pass one of the top treks to do in India.

Surprises on the Rupin Pass Trek

10 surprising twists on the rupin pass trek.

A change in scenery at every turn

1 . Drive through Chainsheel Valley

The surprises on the Rupin Pass start even before the trek starts. The drive from Rohru to Jiskun passes through the Chainsheel Valley. Not many understand how unique and mind-boggling this drive is. It’s like a trek in fast-forward.  You drive past dense rhododendron forests  and then into the  lush meadows that stretch for miles in front of you. Imagine driving right in the middle of such a landscape.

To add to this, you  drive almost at 11,000 feet , at the height of Dhanderas Thatch (11,700 ft) on Rupin Pass trail. In fact, you can even see Dhanderas Thatch from a point on this drive!

2 . The Hanging Village of Jakha

Stepping past the post office of the Jiskun village, peer straight ahead and high up in the horizon. A cluster of houses, marking a village hangs out of the mountainside – so incredulous, that it takes time for you to fathom how a village can hang from the walls of a mountain. The village is Jakha , also commonly called the hanging village.

3 . Fir forests after Jakha

Half hour outside Jakha village, the trail flattens out and plunges into a fir forest , so sudden that it is almost like a gate has opened up. Pine trees over 100 feet tall tower over the trail. And within the enchanting forest Maple trees play hide and seek. The forest ends as suddenly as it starts over a confluence of the Rupin with a tributary.

4 . Buras Kandi and Saruwas Thatch

Later, past Udaknal and just past Buras Kandi , around a bend in the trail a sight leaves you gaping. Rhododendrons bloom everywhere and climb a thousand feet into the slope. It is a riot of colours: pink, violet and white Rhododendrons – all of the dwarf kind. Some of the Rhododendrons even swoop over the clear waters of the Rupin, their flowers falling into the river to be carried downstream forever. After Buras Kandi you enter Saruwas Thatch , which is another sight in itself. With bursts of yellow flowers and bees buzzing around them, it i a sight to behold!

5 . The first view of the Rupin Waterfall

After a while, stepping over the roots of the Rhododendrons, the trail suddenly tunnels into a view of the U-shaped Rupin glacial valley . In the far distance, at the end of the valley, is the famous three stage Rupin waterfall. It appears to be falling from the clouds.

6 . The Glacial Valley around the Rupin Waterfall

Soon after Saruwas Thatch , the trail climbs over a bump to suddenly stand on the lip of the glacial valley. The sight in front is straight out of a picture book. The Rupin flows gently, slowly through the middle of the greenest meadow that you have seen. On the sides of the valley, snow patches stick to the valley walls.

7 . Snow bridges in the valley

If you are trekking in summer, look out for the  snow bridges that you have to cross on your way to the lower waterfall camp site (Dhanderas Thatch). Snow bridges are common on slopes but to see them on a wide open valley is a surprise.

8 . The Upper Waterfall Campsite

Getting to the upper water fall camp site is a series of switchback climbs over the three water falls (and many on snow bridges and patches). Climbing the final ridge, the Upper Waterfall campsite is unlike any place you have seen before. It is a large basin where icy flanks of mountains surround it. Below the flanks snow melts to form hundreds of little streams that join together to form the Rupin.

9 . The Gully to Rupin Pass

The final climb to the Rupin pass is through a gully. In the narrow snow laden gully voices echo and reverberate through its confines – something that is new to most trekkers.

10 . The Kinner Kailash Ranges on the other side of the Pass

Getting out of the Ronti Gad campsite on the Sangla side, the trail descends harmlessly along over meadows, when a sudden bend on the trail brings you face to face with the towering summits of the Kinner Kailash ranges .

Expert Speak

Arjun Majumdar, Founder, CEO

rupin pass trek bikat

Arjun Majumdar, the Founder of Indiahikes, went on the Rupin Pass trek much before he started Indiahikes. He is a veteran of the trekking community in India and one of the earliest to trek Rupin Pass and put it on the maps of our country. Here’s Arjun talking about the trek full of surprises.

What I Like and Don’t Like About the Rupin Pass Trek

What I Like About Rupin Pass

1 . The adventurous pass crossing

The Rupin gully is a half tube cut out of the mountainside. When you first see it from the trail, the sight of the near-vertical climb is enough to make your heart stop. (A sentiment even our staff and Trek Leaders attest to – despite having done this trek multiple times!).

The climb is 200 meters, on a steep snowy flank through narrow rocky confines of the mountain. As finding a foothold in this terrain is difficult, our staff will cut steps for you on the hard ice. As you climb, placing your foot on these steps – you find that voices echo and travel sharply all over the gully. This climb is as thrilling as it gets!

2 . The Lower waterfall campsite

The lower waterfall campsite is probably one of the most exquisite Himalayas have to offer. Snuggled at the bottom of a perfect “U” shaped glacial valley – it lies on the bed of a lush green meadow. From your view at the bottom of the meadow, snow-patched cliffs tower on all three sides.

In front, the Rupin cascades down from the snowy Dhauladhar range for over two thousand feet to form the famous Rupin waterfall.  Spending two days at this campsite is a luxury!

3 . The grasslands on the Kinnaur side

From the snowline after the pass, the trail descends sharply through endless meadows that stretch to Sangla Kanda.  The Ronti Gad campsite is amid these grasslands. Towering, snow-capped mountains lean over the campsite and a bountiful stream flows along with the camp.

This is a gift after a long pass day! The meadows of Sangla Kanda are awe-inspiring, especially in its setting. The sharp serrated edge of the Kinnaur Kailash range, all over 20,000 ft, overlooking the meadows of Sangla Kanda is enough to make you stand still in amazement.

5 Reasons Why Indiahikes

rupin pass trek bikat

When we brought out new trails in Indian trekking, safety came with us. Back in 2012, we were the first to introduce microspikes, and two years later, pulse oximeters became standard thanks to us. Nobody does safe treks like Indiahikes. In the mountains, emergencies don't care who you're with – everyone knows that when trouble hits, you look for the yellow tents of Indiahikes.

rupin pass trek bikat

We are pioneers in trekking. Since 2007, we have brought out treks that have become India's most famous treks: Roopkund, Rupin Pass, Buran Ghati, Kedarkantha, Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar Marsar, Brahmatal, Phulara Ridge—the list goes on. In 2023 alone, we brought out five new treks in Indian trekking. We know treks better than anyone . This comes directly from the reason why Indiahikes was born: to bring out trek information and enable trekkers to trek on their own.

rupin pass trek bikat

More than 25,000 people trek with us every year. We are the largest trekking organisation in India. 24% of our trekkers come back to trek with us every year. Over 4,000 students from the top educational institutions trek with us every year. Aside from this, families with children choose to trek with Indiahikes knowing that our treks are the safest. We have taken over 8000 children trekking so far, and the number continues to grow.

rupin pass trek bikat

We focus on designing transformative experiences. Our trek leaders conduct thought-provoking exercises that help you reflect and contemplate. This impact stays with you for a long time. Trekkers return feeling energised, more confident, or developing abilities to deal with difficulties. Many have changed careers, rethought their core values, become more humble, shown gratitude to others, or started a new fitness journey.

rupin pass trek bikat

Since 2012, we have pioneered sustainable practices that have become standard in trekking. Using eco-bags, our trekkers have cleared over 120 tonnes of litter from the mountains. We do not carry packaged foods; instead, we serve freshly made food. We do not light campfires; we carry coal to light angethis to keep you warm. Our bio-toilets not only keep our toilets odour-free but also enrich the soil. When you trek with us, you leave mountains better.

  • Overview & Itinerary

The Rupin Pass Trek, offered by Trekkaro, is a breathtaking journey through the lower Himalayan ranges, tracing the source of the River Rupin. The trek begins with a gentle walk through charming villages and lush forests, before becoming more challenging with rocky trails, flowery meadows, and steep curves along the edge of cliffs. Crossing the river Rupin involves jumping over stones and wobbly timber bridges, adding to the excitement. One of the highlights of the trek is spending time in a hanging house, allowing the magic of the Himalayas to seep in. Drinking pure Himalayan water from numerous streams, listening to the orchestra of small and large waterfalls, and gazing at the million stars in the sky are all unforgettable experiences. Crossing snow bridges in measured steps and finally reaching the steep Rupin Pass, only to slide down a snowfield into the enormous green meadows of Govind National Park, is a truly mesmerizing experience. The trek offers a glimpse into the Garhwal and Kinnauri cultures, with their distinct styles of housing. The Himalayas are truly addictive, and those who experience their grandeur from close quarters are lucky indeed. Early summer months may even offer the chance to encounter snow on the way to the pass, making the trek even more exciting and unforgettable.

Best Time to Visit:  May-June and September-October. Expect hiking in the snow at the beginning of May. September and October are pleasant times to trek here. After October, it is generally not advisable to trek alone due to the extreme cold. After November, expect heavy snow in the area.

Trek Itinerary

Reach at Jiskun (5,100 ft.); 198 Km drive from Shimla. The cab will be arranged at an additional cost from Shimla to Jiskun and this will cost approx. Rs. 12,000/- one way per 5-6 seat vehicle. From Shimla, we will arrange a cab to Jiskun. The cab leaves at 07:30 AM from Shimla and you reach Shimla at 07:00 AM. You will have to share this cost with the other trekkers. On the first day of the Rupin Pass Trek with Trekkaro, the adventure begins with an early morning assembly at the meeting point in Shimla. The group sets off on a 10-hour drive to Jiskun, a picturesque village in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. Although there are no activities planned for the day, it is important to leave early to ensure enough time for rest before the next day's trek. Additionally, mountain roads can be unpredictable.

On day 2 of the Rupin Pass Trek with Trekkaro, hikers will embark on a challenging ascent through dense forests and traditional high-altitude villages in Himachal Pradesh. As the trail continues, hikers will eventually leave behind any signs of civilization and cross a small wooden bridge before continuing towards their destination for the day.

On day 3 of the trek, hikers will be treated to a stunning trail alongside the blue waters of the river. The journey will take trekkers through fir forests, patches of snow, and over bridges and boulders. As the trail continues, hikers will enter a forest filled with vibrant rhododendrons of different colors. After a few more kilometers, the campsite for the day will be reached - a vast meadow filled with fresh and vibrant colors.

On day 4 of the Rupin Pass Trek, we have a shorter distance to cover, but it's no less breathtaking. This day may even be the highlight of the entire trek, with stunning landscapes at every turn. We'll walk through vibrant meadows and arrive at the base of the powerful Rupin waterfall, which will serve as our campsite for the night. One of the most remarkable aspects of this trek is the ever-changing scenery. On day 2, we journeyed through fir forests, on day 3, we were surrounded by rhododendrons, and today we'll be walking among the shimmering silver oak trees until we reach our destination for the day - Dhanderas Thatch.

On day 5 of the Rupin Pass Trek with Trekkaro, we embark on a short but thrilling journey to the top of the Rupin Waterfall. This leg of the trek is crucial for acclimatization and preparation for the upcoming challenges. The morning begins with a leisurely pace, allowing trekkers to rest and recharge. The trail is initially level, with streams and wildflowers adorning the way. However, the next section becomes tricky as we encounter snow patches at the base of the waterfall. Here, our snow equipment such as trekking poles and ice-axes come into play. The steep and narrow trail on the snow poses a challenge for the next 1.5 kms until we reach the meadow at the top. The Upper Waterfall Camp is a stunning meadow by a gentle stream, offering breathtaking views of snow-covered mountain ranges and streams merging into the Rupin river. This is a rare opportunity to witness the waterfall from the top and capture the moment at a cinematic location. The campsite is truly a sight to behold!

On day 6 of the trek, you'll embark on the longest and most thrilling day of the journey. Starting at 5 AM, you'll bring packed breakfast and lunch to fuel up along the way. The challenges begin early on with a steep incline through snow to Rati Pheri, gaining altitude quickly. The landscape changes dramatically at Rati Pheri, with expansive views of the Rupin valley replaced by the alpine Dhauladar range. Your trek leader will provide necessary snow equipment like microspikes and gaiters. The trek becomes steep and demanding, with knee-deep snow and slippery sections. After about 3.5 hours, you'll reach the base of the Rupin Pass gully, a narrow and steep half tube prone to falling rocks. After a long and icy climb, you'll be rewarded with the sight of the saddle-shaped Rupin Pass cutting through the Dhauladar Ranges. Hundreds of stone cairns and prayer flags adorn the ridge line, offering impressive views of the Rupin valley. The descent to the Ronti Gad campsite is sharp and rapid, with the opportunity to glissade down the chutes of snow. Once you cross the snowline, be prepared for another sharp descent leading to the Ronti Gad Campsite, where you'll camp for the night surrounded by towering snow-capped mountains.

On day 7 of the Rupin Pass Trek with Trekkaro, we start our descent to Sangla after breakfast at 9 AM. The trail is a dusty shepherd's path, and you may encounter mule traffic and shepherds tending to their cattle along the way. After about 2 hours of trekking, you'll see the Ronti Gad valley slowly retreating behind you, and the snow-clad Kinner Kailash range will come into view. It's a breathtaking sight to behold.

We will reach Shimla late at night, so make your hotel reservations accordingly. *

The cab costs from Sangla to Shimla is approx.. Rs. 11,000 per vehicle (5-6 seaters) and Rs. 16,000 per tempo traveller (12 seaters). The cab leaves at 02:00 PM from Sangla and you will reach Shimla at 01:00 AM.

Trekkaro team will specifically ensure your safety with...

1.  Daily oxygen saturation & pulse reading (if required in trek)  We do treks which have a different environment than our daily life. We live in an environment where we less care about a healthy lifestyle. When it’s come to doing treks or surviving in a not-so-pure environment for more than a day our body should accept the changes. Oxygen saturation is the fraction of [oxygen]-saturated hemoglobin relative to total hemoglobin in the blood. So we ensure the specific balance of oxygen in your blood. Our team ensures the health condition by oxygen saturation and pulse reading before trekking so everyone should aware of their health.

2.  Oxygen cylinders and medical kit  When it comes to high-altitude trek the body doesn't get enough oxygen. It’s not always that you cannot survive in high-altitude treks but for a safer side if your body is not adjusted to the environment we are always ready with the oxygen cylinders. Our team member carries the portable oxygen cylinder and all the basic medicines on the trek. To prevent high altitude conditions - do more exercise, cycle, and swim. The more you practice it’ll easier for you.

3.  Stretchers on every campsite  Although we are physically and mentally ready for the environment there are chances of accidents or uncertain things. In those situations, we have stretchers at every campsite so, in an emergency, the porter will safely drop you at base camp where we can do further treatment.

4.  High-Quality Trek Gears and Equipment  Trekkaro is the only trekking company in the world which is providing Free Trekking Gear (FTG) at no charge/rent only for use during the treks. Expensive FTG includes Decathlon Quechua Trek 100 Shoes, Quechua SH 100/300 Jackets, Hiking Pole/Stick, Gaiters, and Crampons. Now, before registering for the trek, there is no need to think about the expensive trekking gear, and also, do not need to buy or rent expensive trekking gear to go on a trek.

Trekkaro team will ensure you with quality tents and sleeping bags where you can survive in extreme cold. We provide sleeping bags that can hold cold up to -5 to -20 degrees Celsius. It’s always warmer in tents so we ensure you with quality shelter. So even though we are ready for the storm you should tell us if anything bothers you regarding safety.

5.  Radio (for communication between camps and guides)  Our camps are a bit far from each other. But they connect through radio though the network is the issue in hills. Although you miss anything or the weather is not good or we need medical help from the base we can communicate through radios.

6.  Technical team on all snowy slopes  All the treks come up with an adventure. But safety is important in all trails and treks. Wherever we find risky slopes or areas we ensure the turn with the technical team. As we already mentioned earlier we have a well-trained team having knowledge of handling hustles in emergencies and even know how to take care of the trekkers.

Expectations

When you take an adventurous trek with us, then be assured that whatever we do is more than your expectations. In fact, our wish to excel goes beyond the point where your boots hit the trail – it begins the moment that you get in contact with us, and it never ends. There is nothing more satisfying than hearing from our trekkers that they’ve just had “another trip of a lifetime with  Trekkaro ”.

Your Expectations

•  Safety  Of course, this is a non-negotiable. Safety is embedded in our business and it’s something that we take very seriously in all our treks. It's the primary reason we're very popular in just a year.

•  Personalized Service, Care, and Attention to Detail  For some organizations, this is, surprisingly, negotiable. But it isn’t for us. After safety, if we can do one thing right, every time, it’s to ensure that we sweat the small things.

•  The Best Guides If you are already trekking with us, then you’d be forgiven for thinking our guides are superhuman. It doesn’t mean a feat to entertain, cook, guide, and facilitate, but our guides, handle it with grace, and all the while the attention is on you.

•  The Best Itineraries It takes a lot of refinement to make a perfect trek, from dawn to dusk there are a lot of moving parts and the potential for things to go awry. For the last year, we’ve balanced on the tightrope of offering the right amount of activity, flexibility, and trek time. Whilst utilizing the best lodgings in the most unique places.

•  Value  We’re not in the business of making money and providing you with nothing. Our treks aren’t expensive, they represent excellent value for money, and for those seeking to maximize their time, there is no better way.

Our Expectations

It may come as a surprise, but the reality is that it is a two-way street (or trail), you are ultimately responsible for the nature of the experience that you have with us. And not only that, but you also have an influence on the experience of others in your small group.

•  Attitude  This is your vacation, and the attitude that you bring will set the tone for your experience. We get that at times it’s difficult (we plan to challenge you) and we get that at times it’s a bit uncomfortable (this is not a cruise trip). All we ask you to keep an open mind, a big smile on your face, and readiness for the unexpected.

•  Physical preparedness  Our treks are designed for everyday people. You definitely don’t have to be an athlete, but to be fair to yourself and your group members, you do need to be ready. Worried about it? Do not stress it, our team is 100% dedicated to helping you pick the right trek, bring the right gear, and be physically and mentally prepared.

•  Know who’s in charge  As we’ve mentioned, you rightly expect when you join our trek to be in good, safe hands. For us to ensure the entire group’s safety, we suppose you, as our guest, to listen to your lead guide. They are the expert when it comes to decisions made on the trek.

Rupin Pass Trek:

Upcoming Rupin Pass trek starting on 4th June 2022.

When you think of a high altitude trek in summer, Rupin pass trek is not to miss. There are several passes which connect the Baspa valley of Kinnaur to the Garhwal in south. Once these passes were used by shepherds and traders rather than using the circuitous Hindustan-Tibet road in present days. The route offers wide range of landscape, altitude and gradient. Initially the trail is inside the Govind National Park (Govind Vanya Pashu Vihar) and passes through Oak and Fir forests , interior villages in the river valleys at lower elevation while beautiful meadows (referred as Thach in local language), alpine wild flowers, waterfalls, steep ice fields on higher altitude. The route is typically rich in wild flowers, specially just after monsoon. Famous Brahma Kamal flourish in abundance in the surrounding areas of the pass. During summer, the trail above the meadows remain covered in heavy snow. In monsoon the snow melts and the shepherds cross for grazing opportunities. From the pass there are spectacular views of Kinnaur Kailash range and other peaks of Charang Ghati ridge. The other side of the pass i.e. Kinnaur is famed for its “Golden Delicious” apple orchards.

Best time/Seasons for Rupin Pass trek:

As all high altitude treks in the Himalayas (apart from few trans Himalayan treks), Rupin Pass trek also can be done best in two seasons. One being in summer before monsoon and the later being post monsoon in fall.

Summer (May/June):  Starting from early May to end of June. Because of the residual snow of winter expect moderate to heavy snow during this time. You will get snow from lower waterfall camp in patches and above. Due to heavy snow normally Rati Pheri camp is not possible this season but upper waterfall will be the highest camp before Rupin pass. The nature of snow will be icy/slushy as it melts during daytime and refreezes again in the night. Micro spikes/anti-slip grips (don’t get confused yourself with mountaineering crampons) are helpful. Also you will in love with Rhododendrons in summer. These blooms in abundance around Buras Kandi (Buras means Rhododendron in local language). So, if snow is your priority then this is your season. Brief showers in the afternoon is a normal occurrence.

rupin-valley-stretch-in-summer

Post monsoon (Sep/Oct): Traditionally this is the best window for any high altitude pass on the Himalayas. After monsoon the weather becomes clear and haze free. September is typically greener and you will get the meadows (called Thatch in local language) at their best. Variety of flowers bloom in monsoon and remain till late September. Most revered Brahma Kamal bloom on the higher rocky ridges. From October the grass will turn into golden and it will become colder. Also there will be chance of fresh snowfall on high altitude above 14000 ft. Experienced hikers who have already been to snow treks and don’tt have any special liking for snow normally prefer this season.

Rupin valley, its people and culture:

Rupin pass trail is all about following the Rupin river from Dhaula (at Dhaula Supin and Rupin forms Tons river, the main tributary of Yamuna) to its origin. Following upstream you will not only witness its twist and turn but also cross very interior villages of Uttarakhand (up to Sewa village) and then villages of Himachal (Jiskun and Jakha). The architecture of their houses and attires have similarities with Kinnaur region. Most of the people at Jiskun and Jakha are of Satsangi religious sect and are pure vegetarian.

Rupin Pass Trek

A thrilling mountain pass with countless waterfalls on the way, rupin pass trek overview.

rupin pass trek bikat

On the way to Lower Waterfall Campsite

Day 1 Dehradun to Dhaula (1,580 m) drive: 200 KM in 8 hours

The drive from Dehradun to Dhaula passes through the towns of Mussoorie and the villages of Nainbagh, Damta, Naugaon, Purola and Mori. After Mori, it is a beautiful drive along the Rupin River through mixed oak and connifer forests. We reach Dhaula by evening. Overnight in camps.

Day 2 Dhaula (1,580 m) to Sewa (2,000 m) to Aaligad: 14 KM trek in 7 hours

This is the first day of our trek. The trail is on the true right of the valley climbing up gradually. Pisa and Khana villages are seen across the river. We climb up high above the river to Danti Dhar. The path passes through beautiful rhododendron forests. Sewa has a beautiful Hindu temple and lies on the border of the two states. We camp a little after the village on the banks of the river at a site known as Aaligad.

Day 3 Aaligad to Jakha (2,300 m): 9 KM trek in 4 to 5 hours

The trail continues along the true right of the valley. The trail is fairly gradual, going past the two large but remote villages of Dodra and Kuar. This region has recently been connected by road from Rohru (Shimla Region). The road is being extended till Jakha. We cross the bridge below Kuar village and take the path climbing up to the village. This path will join the trail on the true right below Jiskun village. From here the trail steeply climbs to Jiskun, which is located high above the confluence of Rupin and Narkund Khad. Jiskun has a small forest rest house. Continuing along the path, we descend steeply to a side tributary and after a short and steep ascent reach Jakha.

Day 4 Jakha to Burans Kandi (3,080 m): 7 KM trek in 5 to 6 hours

It is a beautiful walk through blue pine and maple forests. After a while the trail starts to descend to the river. There is a small bridge taking the trail to the true left of the valley. We camp overnight beside the river beside a spot frequented by shepherds.

Day 5 Burans Kandi to Lower Waterfall (3,450 m): 6 KM trek in 3 to 4 hours

The forest changes to silver Birch and rhododendron leading to alpine meadows. In season, the area looks spectacular with wild flowers and blue poppies. We walk on the large meadow surrounded by mountains and waterfalls. There is a huge and impressive waterfall in the middle of the valley leading up to the pass.

Day 6 Lower Waterfall to Rupin Pass Basecamp (4,350 m): 6 KM trek in 4 to 5 hours

We start early today to make it to the Base camp of the Rupin pass by afternoon. We start our journey towards the Waterfall and after traversing the steep sections we reach the Upper Waterfall campsite, which is majestic. We spend some time here enjoying the views and have our packed lunch. It seems an ideal campsite but we approach the base camp as it will reduce our ascent to the pass and offer a very different camping experience. The base camp is covered in snow till late June and thus camping in snow from the winters, is a vivid summer experience, with the entire campsite largely to ourselves as we leave most of the groups behind. In the evening we can go climb up the nearby ridges to get panoramic views of the landscape covered in snow.

Day 7 Basecamp (4,350 m) to Rupin Pass (4,690 m) to Ronti Gad (3,990 m): 9 KM trek in 7 to 8 hours

There are excellent views of the hanging glaciers and snow fields on the way to the pass. It is a fairly narrow and steep path through the boulders; in case of snow a rope maybe used. From the pass, one can witness great views of the Kinnaur Kailash range. We descend to the alpine meadows with lots of camping options.

Day 8 Ronti Gad to Kanda to Sangla (2,650 m): 12 KM trek in 5 to 6 hours

Today is a beautiful short trek through blue pine, deodar and oak forest overlooking the Sangla valley. It is a fairly steep descent. Sangla valley is known for growing one of the best quality apples in the world. It is also one of the starting points of the famous Kinnaur Kailash trek. Sangla is connected by road to Shimla. One can get public or private transport from Sangla to Shimla.

This trek is highly popular among the Indian as well as foreign trekkers and those planning this arduous journey this summer season could expect a great expedition ahead. The journey begins from Shimla, Himachal Pradesh,  and concludes at Sangla and would require you to cross the state border to enter Himachal near Kinnaur.

With the Rupin Pass trek starting from Shimla and Bawta serving as a basecamp, you pass through small secluded hamlets and get to see the likes of beautiful waterfalls all through the trek. In this route, you get to visit the famous hanging village at Jhaka and experience standing on a snow bridge with river Rupin flowing right below you and falling off the edge of the mountain and forming a beautiful waterfall in front of your very eyes.

After hiking through the dense forests of fir, rhododendron, and oak, the woodlands open up to a magnificent view of the Kailash Peak as you reach the end of the trek. After the summit day, you pass through Ronti Gad and Sangla with your trek ending at Shimla, and after an experience in the mountains, the local culture feels distinctively different from the place that you started. Your trek route will be 52 km  in length with beautiful scenic beauty to treat your eyes. The Rupin Pass trek is divided into 7 days, with you covering about 7 to 8kms on average each day.

On the trek trail, you will experience a distinctive change in landscape and terrain with changing altitude. At first, the trail takes you through the Govind National Park or Govind Vanya Pashu Vihar. The trek route is through coniferous woodlands and small towns and villages that have settled on the banks of the stream valleys at lower altitudes. You experience the mesmerizing view of vibrant colorful meadows, also known as Thach; wildflowers with a varying range of colors; waterfalls; vast stretches of ice-covered fields overwhelm you as you reach a higher elevation. In the summer season, these stretches of land stay covered with snow while in the post-monsoon season, you can find wildflowers blossoming along your trek trail. This looks beautiful and creates a serene ambiance as you experience the beauty of nature in your trekking route. From the Rupin Pass summit, it's a different spectacle altogether. The view of the Kinnaur Kailash range and Charang Ghati ridges from the pass will leave you spellbound.

It is not only the sudden changes in the features of nature that add to the serene ambiance of the Rupin Pass trek but also places like Poku Devta temple , the two-story temple of the Kinnauri culture at Sewa add a different dimension to this trek altogether. As your trek route takes you through remote villages, your cell network, along with the temperature, starts taking a dip as you gain altitude. As the Rupin Pass trek transverses through secluded villages to the lofty Himalayan peaks, you can draw your required bit of cash from the ATM at Rohru, which is on the way to Bawta, before your trek commences.

Alternate Rupin Pass Trek Route

Rupin Pass trekking route transverses through two different states of India, passing through vivid features of nature and offering breathtaking spectacles along the way. The trek route of Rupin Pass starts from Dhaula in Uttarakhand and ends in Sangla in Himachal Pradesh. The beauty of the trek route lies in the fact that it lets you experience the uninhabited snow-covered Himalayan region as well as the two very distinctive local cultures of the two adjoining states.

The Rupin Pass trek route provides an adventurous thrill as well as a serene and calming experience. The trail passes through ancient mountain villages , which are quite essential and have been referred to multiple times in the Hindu religious texts and epics, to the rich alpine meadows and valleys where mountain peaks soar above Rupin Pass. The mountainous terrain of the region is perfect for an adventure-seeking soul as the trail advances through rough terrain and three different valleys of Rupin, Baspa & Pin, with each having its unique feature.

Rupin Pass trek trail in India takes you on a trek route that's along the river Rupin. The trail takes you through an adventurous journey to the river Rupin's origin. As you walk along the river banks upstream, you will experience the river's sharp turns and twists as it flows through the mountain terrain.

On following the river to its origin, the route takes you through remote villages of Uttarakhand like Sewa, Jiskun, and Jaskha of Himachal. You get to experience the local culture and lifestyle of these villagers as the people of Jiskun and Jakha belong to the religious sect of Satsangi and lead a vegan life. These villagers exhibit norms and rituals that are quite similar to the Kinnaur locale, and their houses and attires do say the same. On your last day as well, you will pass through the villages of Baspa valley in Chitkul. From Dhanderas Thatch campsite, you can see the mesmerizing waterfall, on top of which you climb. It is an exciting adventure in itself to climb on top of the Rupin Pass Upper Waterfall . The view one gets from the top is something one cannot forget. From the Upper Waterfall campsite, the trek moves on to Ronti Gad, crossing the Rupin pass via the Rati Pheri. The trek then ends at Sanga, which is a thorough descent from Ronti Gad. From here, you can take a bus or a cab which can drop you off at Shimla.

Best time to Visit Rupin Pass Trek

Since it’s a crossover trek, it is always advisable to visit in the summer or post-monsoon season. Although open throughout the year, except for the monsoon season (for landslides and slippery trenches), the Summer season has been proven to be the favorite of all the trekkers because of the pleasant weather conditions. Trekkers ideally prefer to visit Rupin P ass from mid-April to June and from September to October.

Weather and temperature around the year at Rupin Pass

In summer, the average temperature of Rupin Pass reaches the highest of 20 degrees Celsius and the lowest of 3 degrees Celsius, while in winter 18˚C to minus 7˚C. Average day temperatures at Rupin Pass vary from plus 18 degrees Celsius to plus 10 degrees Celsius. At night, average temperatures range from 0 degrees Celsius to minus 7 degrees Celsius. With gaining altitude, expect to see a drop in temperature, which takes a further dip after the sun sets down behind the horizon. So, pack your bags accordingly. You can always wear clothes in layers to retain body heat and have a pleasant and comfortable experience during the trek.

Difficulty level of the trek

With a vast stretch of 52 km being covered within 7 days , by trekking 7-8 km per day, the Rupin Pass trek in India is considered moderate to difficult in terms of difficulty. It is important to note that ‘difficulty’ can be a relative term. People with proper fitness and an active body often find the trek to be smooth and enjoy a peaceful summit climb and descent. The trek covers a variety of terrain, from pleasant, tranquil meadows to rugged terrain, and hikes on the narrow roads at the edges of cliffs. It also has occasional descends and climbs that be overwhelming for some but can be equally exciting enough for trekkers to come back again to experience something new that the trek has to offer.

Is the trek safe?

Absolutely! Yes, there are steep climbs, sharp descents, and walk through narrow trails at the edge of the cliff. But, the trek route that has been chosen for you is safe enough for trekkers and provides beautiful views. With necessary, proper precautions and good trekking shoes (which is a must in mountain trekking) along with the help and guidance of our trek leaders, you will have a great experience in the trek. Since the trek involves steep climbing and sharp descents, you must wear proper mountain trekking shoes that are waterproof. They must be waterproof because you will cross snow-covered fields, and it will be uncomfortable for you if your feet get wet.

Is it recommended for beginners?

Well, it depends. Mountain trekking is more about mental endurance than about experience. There are many first-timers or complete beginners who have completed the trek successfully and have reported having a beautiful experience. There are stories of how they fell in love with mountain trekking after the Rupin Pass trek and have started trekking often.

That being said, it is essential to note that a bit of experience trekking before this does help to know what to expect in a high-altitude trek. At high-altitude treks, the biggest worry is Acute Mountain Sickness or AMS, which has nothing to do with being first-timers or experienced professionals. You can easily stay away from any such problems if you keep yourself hydrated throughout the trek and listen to the tips of the trek leaders.

Preparation Tips for a successful Rupin Pass trek

Trek essentials.

You must carry a proper waterproof trekking bag, along with your winter clothes, and basic camping essentials. Wear proper trekking shoes and break them in before you go off for trekking. Contact our team to rent trekking shoes along with other mountain gear.

How to dress up

The trick is to layer up. Yes, you will be carrying winter clothes to beat the cold temperatures. But, while trekking, you might feel hot. So it is important that instead of wearing one heavily insulted winter wear, you layer up light winter wear so that you can take them off at your convenience during a day’s trek.

Rupin Pass is a high-altitude trek. It involves 7-8 km of trekking per day with occasional steep climbs and sharp descents. It means that you will require stamina and proper fitness to have a smooth and comfortable experience. A month before the trek, you can start exercising and build up your body fitness and stamina. An hour’s session of strength and endurance-building exercises for a month should be enough for you. If you are a smoker, since the mountain air is thin, it is better if you cut back on your smoking and stop a month before your trekking dates so that your lungs function at full capacity.

It all begins in the quaint village of Dhaula, where a group of trekkers gather, their spirits high with anticipation. As they set foot on the trail, they are greeted by the majestic beauty of the mountains, their peaks reaching for the sky like ancient sentinels.

The trail unfolds before them, revealing a tapestry of landscapes – lush forests teeming with life, meadows adorned with colorful wildflowers, and icy streams gushing down rocky slopes. Each step brings them closer to the heart of the Himalayas, and with each passing day, they find themselves immersed in a world of wonder and awe.

But it is the ascent to the Rupin Pass that truly defines this trek. As they climb higher and higher, the air grows thinner, the wind whispers secrets of the mountains, and the landscape transforms into a snow-covered wonderland. With each labored breath, they push themselves forward, driven by the promise of reaching the summit.

And then, finally, they stand at the top of the world – the Rupin Pass. The view takes their breath away – a panorama of snow-capped peaks stretching as far as the eye can see, a testament to the majesty of nature. In that moment, they are overcome with a sense of accomplishment, of having conquered the mighty Himalayas.

But the journey doesn't end here. As they descend from the pass, they carry with them memories that will last a lifetime – of laughter shared around campfires, of friendships forged on the trail, and of moments of quiet contemplation amidst the grandeur of nature.

And so, the story of the Rupin Pass Trek lives on, a tale of adventure and discovery, of pushing boundaries and embracing the unknown. For those who embark on this journey, it is a story that will forever be etched into their hearts and minds, a story that makes this trek truly memorable.
