Malta and Sicily – the perfect travel combination

sicily tour malta

Malta and Sicily are islands strategically situated in the Mediterranean. Sicily lies about 80kms north of Malta. Malta lies about halfway between Sicily and the northern coast of Africa.

The proximity of the two islands has meant that there have been connections between the two. Since prehistoric times up to the modern day! The earliest human settlements in Malta are believed to have been populated by peoples from southeastern Sicily.

Yet these two places have their own distinct identities and culture. Malta as a sovereign nation made up of three islands, while Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean.

Why combine Malta with Sicily?

sicily tour malta

Including a stunning variety of historical and cultural attractions, and a common culinary, linguistic, and religious heritage. Their proximity to one another makes a combination trip a very real and convenient opportunity to see the lands of the proud Maltese and Sicilian peoples firsthand.

Combine our Sicily Bella Itinerary with a tailored private Malta trip.

Our 7-Day Itinerary of Malta

What are their historical connections?

After Rome’s defeat of Carthage, the Maltese archipelago became part of the province of Sicily in the Roman Empire. Roman antiquities still exist in Malta, such as the Roman House in Mdina. Roman religion was introduced along with Latin as the official language.

The Normans seized Malta from the Muslims around 1091 and the archipelago remained a feudal dependency of the Kingdom of Sicily. Even after 1530, when it was given to the Knights of Malta to protect southern Europe from Muslim invasion. Italian became the official language, and cross-cultural influences occurred in the town’s architecture and artworks. This includes the artist Caravaggio having two major paintings hanging in Valetta’s beautiful St John’s Co-Cathedral . Malta’s political dependency on Sicily only ended in 1798 when Napoleon’s army conquered the island.

The Sicilian influence on Malta’s culture also impacted the Maltese culinary realm, with its emphasis on olive oil, pasta, seafood, appetisers such as rice balls (arancini), and sweets such as kannoli.

The cross-cultural pollination continued recently with the work of Italian architect Renzo Piano in his 2014 Valletta City Gate project , with reconstruction of the city’s entry gate to its original 17th century dimensions, the building of a new parliament and open-air theater that replaced an opera house destroyed in World War II and resizing of the important city gate bridge leading over the landscaped original moat area below.

Malta Highlights

A week in Malta would provide time to see the highlights of the small island nation. These include each of the three islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino. See our 7-day Malta itinerary for a good starting point.

Start in Malta’s capital Valletta, with its beautiful setting overlooking the Grand Harbor, and impressive architecture from its days under the rule of the Knights of Malta, who also built the defensive fortifications. The Baroque St. Johns Co-Cathedral has a stunning interior with key works by Caravaggio, and the Grandmaster’s Palace and the Auberges or residences of the Knights are architectural highlights of the age.

View from above of roofs and church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Paul's Anglican Pro-Cathedral, Valletta, Capital city of Malta

Valletta, Capital city of Malta

Other don’t miss sights around the island of Malta include the medieval former capital city of Mdina with its cathedral and vestiges of Roman rule in the Roman House with its well-preserved mosaics. The temples of Hqar Qim and Mnajdra and the underground burial chambers of Hal Saflieni are some of the world’s oldest and most impressive archaeological ruins. Malta has an amazing number of churches underscoring its Roman Catholic heritage, and two other churches of note are the Ta Pinu church on Gozo and the Mosta Dome. Natural highlights include the Blue Pool and Inland Sea of Dwerja Bay. See these and more on our Malta itinerary, fully customisable.

Malta, Gozo

Gozo, Malta

Be sure to schedule at least a day trip to Gozo, to check out the Ciutadella fortress with its cathedral in the main town of Victoria, and the Gganitja Temples, older than the pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge. Natural beauty sights include the Blue Grotto on Gozo, and the Blue Lagoon on the smallest island of Comino.

Our 7-day Malta tour can provide you with a great introduction to Malta’s top sights, cities, temples, and natural attractions.

Sicily Highlights

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean, and it would take at least a full two weeks to begin to do it justice. Discover its beautiful coastline, Mt. Etna, the stirring ancient Greek and Roman ruins, and mediaeval villages. We can take you in comfort and style to see the beauties of Sicily on our 10-day Sicily Bella Tour.

Sitting as it does between Europe and Africa, Sicily saw a host of conquerors. From the Phoenicians to the Romans, Arabs and Normans, French, and Spanish. It’s cuisine, religion, art, and architecture show the impact of this rich mix of cultures over the ages.

Palermo, Sicily, Italy

Visit the Norman Palace and Royal Chapel, the Teatro Massimo Opera house, and the Baroque Quattro Canti piazza. Outside the city center is the spectacular church of Monreale with its superb mosaics.

Italy, Sicily, Agrigento Valley of Temples

Italy, Sicily, Agrigento Valley of Temples

Traveling around the island, some of the best-known attractions include the Greek temples of Segesta, Selinunte and Agrigento, the city of Syracuse with its old town of Ortigia, the baroque cities of Noto and Ragusa, the roman mosaics of Villa Romana del Casale, the medieval village of Erice and the seaside towns of Cefalu and Trapani. Taormina has a stunning hilltop position near Mt. Etna, Europe’s tallest active volcano.

sicily tour malta

Both islands have played a significant role over the centuries given their strategic position in the Mediterranean. The various conquerors left their own cultural, architectural, culinary, and linguistic impacts. This has created the unique mix that is today’s modern Malta and Sicily. Weather and Packing

The Weather

You can expect warm days and cool evenings in Sicily and Malta and October. Although the weather will vary from place to place, we will be staying in coastal cities and the highs are expected to be in mid-70s with lows in the upper 50s. You can expect one or two rain days throughout the course of the trip.

Please remember to bring one jacket – preferably water-proof, an umbrella and at least two pairs of shoes – a pair for more formal occasions and a pair for touring. Although we’ve eliminated as much walking as possible, city-centers are more often than not pedestrian only. We will be walking (on average) four to six miles each day. Make sure your “tour shoes” are broken-in and comfortable.

Tip: Many seasoned travelers pack the essentials in their carry-on bag, in case their luggage happens to get lost or delayed.

Tour Dress and Dinner Dress Suggestions

Comfort is paramount. We will be walking a lot and will be constantly getting on and off the bus. The most important thing to keep in mind is your feet. Please pack accordingly.

Tip: Worn-in walking shoes – preferably water proof – will serve you faithfully. Moleskin and baby powder might also come in handy!

Dinner Dress

We call the dinner dress code “country club casual” or “smart casual. ” That means something like collared shirts and non-jeans pants for men, and a casual dress or pants with a nice top for women. These suggestions are by no means mandatory, they are solely meant to be taken as humble advice if you would like to fit in with the French culture. They like to dress well!

Tip: A jacket that can be dressed up and dressed down is a spring traveler’s best friend.

Group Meals

Daily breakfast and daily dinner are included in the tour package. Your dinner menus have been selected by ProRome. You can expect four bountiful courses at each dinner. Water and house wine are included in the price.

Tip: If you are allergic to something simply inform the tour director at the beginning of the trip.

Tipping and Gratuities

We suggest that each traveler leave $20 – $30 per person for both the driver and the tour manager.

If you feel inclined to leave a tip for the housekeeping at the hotel, a few euro left in your room is more than sufficient.

Tipping is not required nor expected in restaurants, taxis or bars.

Dietary and Health Restrictions

There are no dietary restrictions. Vegetarian or vegan, gluten-free or celiac, we work only with restaurants and caterers who have ample options for you.

Regarding health, please review a clause from our Terms and Conditions.

ProRome Tours expects you to make a realistic assessment of your health. All Participants are expected to be in active good health, to enjoy traveling as part of a group, and to be ready to experience cultural differences with grace. Walking and climbing stairs are required in many hotels and airports, to board the aircraft, and as part of many excursions. Prior to traveling, we highly recommend visiting your personal physician for a check-up, so that you may discuss your ability to participate in this type of journey. For the latest recommendations on specific health precautions for the areas you will visit, consult your physician and the Centers for Disease Control. Any physical condition requiring special attention, diet, or treatment should be reported in writing when the reservation is made. We will make reasonable efforts to accommodate Participants with special needs; however, we cannot accommodate wheelchairs. If you require a slower pace, extra assistance, or the use of a cane or walking stick, arrangements will be made for private touring at each destination, if necessary, at the discretion of our Tour staff. Any extra cost for such arrangements will be the responsibility of the Participant. If you would like to forgo some of the scheduled sightseeing to rejuvenate and relax, please feel free to do so at any time.

If you are calling from an American phone number, you must dial the international “dial out” code first, which is “00”, or simply the “+” symbol. You must then dial the country code (USA is 1, Italy is 39, Malta is 356), followed by the number.

NB – Remember to CONTACT YOUR SERVICE provider a few days before the trip and activate international calling on your phone.

Crisis Management

The following scenarios are typical “crisis” situations that may occur while on tour France and how to best prevent and manage them. Please read. If you would like to read our full plan please download it here: https://prorometours.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/ProRome-Crisis-Management-Plan-.pdf .

You Get Lost

This is a common occurrence. First of all, stay put. Most folks who get really lost do so by running in the wrong direction! Your tour manager will find you if you stay put. If you have a cell phone, please call your tour manager, or any other group member you may be in contact with. If you cannot dial “+” on your phone, dial “00” followed by “1”, followed by the number. If after 30 minutes you are unable to reach your tour manager and cannot find the group, proceed to the nearest Taxi stand and have a cab take you back to the hotel. The hotel address can be found below. If you do not see a cab stand nearby, enter the nearest hotel and ask the concierge to call you a cab. Upon arrival at the hotel please call your tour manager and let him know that you have returned to the hotel.

You Lose Your Phone, Wallet or Passport

Nine times out of ten, this can be prevented. Theft is not uncommon in city centers, so remember to keep your valuables as protected as possible. Fanny packs under the shirt are ideal. If you use a purse or backpack, hold it in front especially in crowds. Be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on those around you as well. If you do lose your phone, wallet or passport, inform your tour manager immediately. We will then inform the local authorities and say a prayer to St. Anthony! The US embassy in Palermo and Valletta can turn around new passports within a few hours, but expect a hefty fee – 500 euro!

You Get Injured

Again, nine times out of ten we can prevent personal injuries by following rules and guidelines that are put in place. That includes never standing while the bus is moving, only crossing the street at crosswalks, and wearing sturdy walking shoes and keeping your eyes on the road. If you do experience an injury, inform your tour manager immediately. If necessary, we will arrange emergency transportation to the nearest hospital for care.

Dehydration and Fatigue

It is crucially important to begin hydration at least three days prior to departure, and to increase your electrolyte intake as well. Touring in autumn can be deceiving, because while you may not feel thirsty in 60 degree weather, your body will nonetheless require lots of water. Always carry a water bottle with you. If you do experience dizziness, a fever or sudden fatigue, notify your tour manager immediately and sit still. If necessary, we will arrange emergency transportation to the nearest hospital for care.

Trip Patron

Saint Paul, the great apostle to the Gentiles, will be our trip patron. Not only did Saint Paul sojourn in Malta and help to establish a Christian community there, but he also visited Sicily and assuredly assisted in the formation of a Christian community in Siracusa. As the patron saint of Malta, Saint Paul will protect us on our journey. Saint Paul, pray for us!

  • 333llp 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent trip Had an enjoyable trip from Malta to Pozzallo(Sicily). The catamaran ferry is very big and stable – the weather was excellent and Mediterranean sea was quiet. We had a club class level, which is very roomy and includes free snacks/sandwiches and drinks(non alcoholic). The two hours trip went very quickly. Read more Written April 20, 2024
  • G8933LKjessicam 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Virtu Ferries: where customer service goes to die. Virtu Ferries' lackluster response to customer inquiries further compounds their abysmal performance. When approached for assistance, they offered nothing but hollow platitudes and devoid-of-substance advice, leaving travelers adrift in a sea of uncertainty. Their failure to provide meaningful guidance reflects a profound disregard for the welfare of their passengers, underscoring their woeful incompetence and blatant disregard for customer satisfaction. In times of crisis, Virtu Ferries proved themselves to be not just unreliable, but actively unhelpful. It's clear that their commitment to virtue ends where their responsibilities to their patrons begin. If reliability, customer care, and basic decency are virtues they aspire to, Virtu Ferries has certainly missed the boat. Avoid at all costs unless you have a penchant for disappointment. • 587bobbyn 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Dissappointing I was looking into booking a trip to Sicily. After doing my research on their website I asked for a quotation of prices from their contact team. The website prices are completely different to the quotation I was given. The quotation was triple the website price for a person, double the price for a vehicle and furthermore, they stated that they do not offer return tickets despite the website saying so! Failure to update ones website is quite sad to be honest and misleading to persons who wish to book through a website. Read more Written November 5, 2023
  • Petiboi 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great ferry but watch out for port "taxis" Great ferry trip. Modern, safe, spotlessly clean and comfortable. Great way to get to Sicily. Had a bad experience at the other end though. Needed a taxi to station. A little guy grabbed us and proceeded to squeeze 10 Euros each out of us for the trip. THEN he loaded another entire family into the van. We for some reason stopped at a service station. He kept delaying and pushing to drive us all the way to Syracuse for an undisclosed sum. Not until I went ballistic did he finally drive us to the station with 5 minutes to spare. Try uber maybe. Read more Written September 25, 2023

  • klegau 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great ferry ship experience Going by one of the Virtu Ferries was our main reason to go to Malta, so spending one day going to Siciliy and back is, well, a bit crazy, but we very much enjoyed the experience. The vessel is just "cool" and we were staying in business class, enough seats available. Definitely we would do this trip again. One star is deducted actually only because of the slow catering service on board but as the main purpose of our trip was the "ship", everything else we consider super fine! • Raff-Daff 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Malta <-> Sicily?! Go Virtu Ferries For our first trip to Sicily with friends, we decided to take the ferry across, and rent a car on the island. We tend to choose a plane, but we're happy we didn't on this occasion. It's an easy way to travel, especially without a car as was our case, and we highly recommend using the Club Class on the upper deck. Better chairs, more spacious and good catering. Though we had rough seas, the voyage was fast and easy, and we look forward to our next crossing! Read more Written June 18, 2023
  • 241sallys 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Avoid Virtu Ferries We reserved a round trip from Pozzallo to Malta and got email confirmations several times, including 3 days before our trip. I specifically asked where to check in, yet the office they told me to report to was closed on Sunday (when we were leaving). When we got our boarding passes, we saw that our return trip was booked for the 7:30 am sailing, even though we were booked and confirmed on the 6:30 pm sailing. Despite multiple phone calls, Virtu Ferries refused to let us on the sailing that we had reserved. We will never book with them again unless we are desperate. They have terrible customer service and clearly do not honor prepaid reservations. Avoid them!!! Read more Written June 8, 2023
  • Faithfultravelerrev 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles All ferry services were excellent Well operated ferry service we were able to enjoy from Valletta, Malta to Pozzallo, Sicily and back, and also from the island of Malta to the island of Gozo and back. Along with the short Valletta to Sliema ferry service, all the ferry crossings were enjoyable, and great opportunities for making memories and keeping them in photos. 10 highlighted pics attached to this review are from our sunrise departure from Valletta and sunset departure from Pozzallo after enjoying a full day in Sicily. • fiftystatesevenconts 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles wonderful day Decided the day before to go to Sicily from Valletta because it was only 68 euros round trip. Ferry had free wifi. Purchased food was terrible, but I should have known better with a captive group. It was less than 2 hours to Sicily and we easily found public buses to take us to the 2 UNESCO towns we wanted, Modica and Ragusa. We spent the entire day wandering around and loved it. The ferry only had one departure from Valletta at 6 am and returned only at 8:30 pm and that made for a long day, but sooo worth it. Now I want to return to Sicily to further explore such a history filled island. Siracusa is the oldest city in Italy and everyone told us it was beautiful, but it was in the opposite direction from Modica and Ragusa. The entire day, not counting the ferry ride, only cost about $15 taking the buses. Read more Written January 20, 2023

Boarded their beautiful high speed craft St.John Paul II, the check in staff were great and very friendly with us, especially Mr. Jonathan Tabone and Chief Purser Brenda El Khazmi. Prices on board are for everyone's pocket, we bought from their onboard shop some great perfumes also. The bar staff is amazing.. Arriving in Malta back we were also greeted by a real gentleman who is a security officer there with the name of Alexander Storace . Thanks and well done Virtu Ferries. As we make our way through the stalls, taste Sicilian staples like panelle (chickpea fritters), crocche (fried mash potatoes), and caponata e sfincione (thick pizza). The day continues with a tour of the ancient Old City and its incredible mix of architecture styles.

Day 3: Palermo at Leisure

We'll visit the Silvestri craters where lava flows from previous eruptions, and then visit a farmhouse at the foot of Mount Etna with a tasting of homemade honey, olives, olive oil and wine. Learn about the fascinating world of bees from the beekeepers, with the possibility of assisting in the extraction of honey from the hive. Back in Taormina, we'll sample the pistachios that are often used in Sicilian cuisine, then enjoy a panoramic tour finished with a visit to the ancient Greek Theater, where we'll enjoy remarkable views of the city and countryside. The rest of the day is at leisure in Taormina to enjoy the delights of the city.

Discover the connections between recipes and Sicilian history and culture with storytelling by the chef.

Day 7: Taormina – Ragusa – Noto – Syracuse

sicily tour malta

We'll make our way to Ragusa, a town of two faces: Ragusa Superiore, a busy working town with grid-pattern streets, and Ragusa Ibla, a protected UNESCO historic city center. The Ilba district is located above a hill and is filled with narrow alleys, bridges, and small streets with Sicilian Baroque architecture. Next, visit Noto, another example UNESCO town with beautiful Baroque architecture and an elegant walkway flanked by palazzos and churches. Enjoy refreshing Sicilian gelato, which typically does not contain eggs or cream. Afterward, we'll continue to our hotel in Syracuse for free time.

Day 8: Syracuse

sicily tour malta

Step back in time to the glorious days of Grecian Sicily. Syracuse encapsulates Sicily's timeless beauty with ancient Greek ruins, citrus orchards, cafe tables on baroque piazzas and medieval streets leading down to the blue sea. Across the water is Ortygia, a beautiful island with beautiful streetscapes and attractive dining and shopping. In the afternoon, we will visit an ancient castle, which is a farm owned by the same family for over a century. Here we'll enjoy a guided tour of the winery and historic garden followed by a tasting of their wines. We'll return to our hotel to join together for a delicious dinner as we prepare for Malta the next day.

Day 9: Syracuse – Mellieha (Malta)

sicily tour malta

Today, we'll transfer by coach to Pozzallo and board the ferry to Valletta. The crossing takes approximately 1 hour and 45 mins. Once in Malta, we will arrive at our hotel and enjoy light Maltese platters and two cocktails at the scenic Valletta Waterfront at night.

Note: If the ferry is not available, we will fly from Catania Airport to Malta Airport.

Day 10: Mellieha

sicily tour malta

Beginning at the main gates of Valletta is where the food and culture experience will begin. Valletta was built by the Knights of St. John after the Great Siege of Malta by the Ottomans in 1565. With over 320 monuments in a 2-mile radius, the Baroque capital of Malta was named the European Capital of Culture in 2018. The town offers a great mixture of history and contemporary liveliness. Walk through the back streets of Valletta, where we'll uncover secret spots and local delicacies one can only find in Malta. With hints from North Africa to the Mediterranean, this unique experience will leave your taste buds singing.

Day 11: Mellieha

sicily tour malta

Enjoy a day at leisure or consider joining an optional tour to the Sister Island Gozo. Tonight, rejoin other travelers for a farewell dinner.

Day 12: Depart Malta

Our tour comes to an end today after breakfast. Travelers who purchased our air-inclusive package will transfer to the airport for our return flight back to the U.S.

Note: Due to ferry timings, there may be a boxed breakfast and early wake up to take the ferry back to Sicily, before continuing to Catania Airport. Depending on the schedule, a flight from Malta to Catania Airport might also be used.

Where to go in Sicily and Malta, a two-week itinerary for backpackers by backpackers

Cortney Ellis | Posted on January 18, 2023 |

The Italian island of Sicily and the island country of Malta are underrated Mediterranean spots that have been catching media attention WORLDWIDE. From Sicily being the location of the latest season of The White Lotus to Malta being in Jurassic World Dominion and Below Deck Mediterranean . Both are beautifully rugged with pristine beaches and historic cobblestoned towns that are nothing but spectacular.

Sicily and Malta are great for backpackers because they are budget-friendly compared to other Mediterranean destinations and are super close to each other (no wasting half a day in an airport). This article will help you plan the ultimate 2-week Mediterranean getaway and find out where to go in Sicily and Malta.

More about Sicily

Sicily is located on the southern tip of Italy and is the largest island in the Mediterranean. Believed to be inhabited since 12,000 BC, this island boasts diverse landscapes and rich culture that is a result of a mish-mash of ethnic groups. Its colourful traditions are seen through its ancient towns, century-old markets, and passionate locals. The island is also the birthplace of arancini, a fried rice ball that is an Italian delicacy and a must-try at any bakery. Sicily offers authentic Italian charm without the overwhelming crowds of Italy’s mainland.

More about Malta

Malta sits between Sicily and the northern African coast. The country consists of three islands, the main island, Malta, and two smaller ones, Gozo and Comino. It has a fascinating history dating back to 5200 BC with its culture being influenced by the Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs. The country is known for welcoming locals, baroque architecture, and archaeological sites that includes seven megalithic temples. As a haven for dreamy beaches and idyllic coastal views, Malta is unmatched for snorkelling and sunbathing – especially since it has some of the hottest temperatures in Europe!

Day 1-3 – Palermo

sicily tour malta

Palermo is Sicily’s lively capital city that is full of Sicilian culture. It is not an overly clean place, but don’t let this discourage you from visiting! The ancient architecture is stunning, locals are welcoming, and the markets are on a whole other level. If you want a break from the city streets, nearby beaches can be reached by bus.

Palermo really comes alive during the night, especially at the historical Vucciria market, a party hotspot for both locals and travellers. Palermo Airport is not far from the city centre, making it easy (and affordable) to reach with public transportation and shared taxi options.

Things to do in Palermo

  • The Church of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio
  • Dance at La Vucciria
  • Ballarò Market
  • Mondello Beach
  • Palermo Cathedral
  • The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo
  • Royal Palace of Palermo

Sshh!... This is a secret

Day 4 – Cefalù

sicily tour malta

50 minutes from Palermo via train is the town of Cefalù. Seaside and irresistibly charming, Cefalù has quaint restaurants and a picturesque medieval old town with a Norman cathedral. Cefalù is popular with travellers so you can expect to find lots of gelato and souvenir shops around. If you want to lounge at Cefalù Beach (one of the best beaches in Sicily), arrive early to secure a spot as it becomes crowded since the beach is very narrow.

Things to do in Cefalù

  • Cefalù Beach
  • The Cathedral of Cefalù
  • Dine on pasta at Pasta e Pasti
  • Wander the streets of the old town

Day 5-7 – Taormina

sicily tour malta

The hilltop town of Taormina can be reached by train from Cefalù within four hours. Taormina is breathtakingly magical and has everything you want in a Mediterranean destination with turquoise water beaches, an elegant old town, and breathtaking coastal views – it was even a filming location for season two of The White Lotus . Like Cefalù, Taormina is a popular area that is slightly more high-end, yet still budget-friendly.

It’s worth noting the distance from the town to the beaches. The town sits on top of a cliff, and to get down to the beach you’ll need to take a bus or the cable car. To save money and time, try spending the day oceanside and the evenings dining and exploring the town.

Things to do in Taormina

  • Ancient Theatre of Taormina
  • Isola Bella
  • The Public Botanic Gardens and Villa Comunale
  • Browse the stores on Corso Umberto
  • Piazza Duomo
  • Piazza IX Aprile
  • Take a boat to Grotta Azzurra
  • Rent a beach chair on Giardini Naxos

Day 8 – Catania/Travel Day

sicily tour malta

The city of Catania is a quick 50-minute train ride east of Taormina and sits at the bottom of Mount Etna, an active volcano. It is not as touristy compared to Palermo and is where you’ll find one of Sicily’s main airports, making it a quick and typically cheap way to fly to nearby Malta. If you have time before your flight, this ancient port city is worth exploring, or if you’re up for an adventure, you can hike to Mount Etna’s summit.

Things to do in Catania

  • Castello Ursino
  • Fountain of the Elephant
  • La Pescheria Market
  • The Giardino Bellini
  • Piazza Università

Day 9-10 – Malta, St. Julian’s

sicily tour malta

Sitting on Malta’s east coast is St. Julian’s, an urban town that was once a small fishing village. Home to the island’s nightlife district, Paceville, and the cute Spinola Bay, St. Julian’s is a busy traveller hotspot for both day and night time fun. The town is around a 25-minute car ride from the Malta airport, with a shared shuttle being the cheapest and most convenient mode of transportation.

I suggest staying in St. Julian’s for your entire vacation and taking day trips to other towns on the island, as it is centrally located and not as pricy as other areas. If you want a super social and party environment, the Marco Polo Hostel is a fun option in Paceville. However, if you’re into more of a chill vibe, Inhawi Hostel is in a beautiful building with a pool, steps from Balluta Bay Beach.

Things to do in St. Julian’s

  • Balluta Square
  • Brunch at Crudo
  • Swim in Balluta Bay
  • Walk the promenade to Spinola Bay
  • Watch live music at The Thirsty Barber

Day 11 – Sliema

sicily tour malta

Sliema, the town next to St. Julian’s is just a 30-minute scenic walk away. With a lovely promenade, hidden alleyways, and streets lined with colourful balconies, Sliema is an affluent and aesthetically pleasing town. Along the promenade, there are places to jump in the water with well-marked areas for swimming, however, expect to find only rocky beaches here. Sliema also boasts plenty of restaurants and shops in addition to a watchtower built in 1657.

Things to do in Sliema

  • Sliema Beach and the Victorian Baths
  • Happy Hour at Surfside (beach bar)
  • Walk the promenade
  • Carolinas Petit Cafe’ & Tearoom
  • Saint Julian’s Tower

Day 12 – Valetta

sicily tour malta

Malta’s capital, Valletta, is a World Heritage City that was founded in 1566. Famed for grand baroque architecture, an impressive natural harbour, and charming cobblestone streets – it’s hard not to fall in love with Valletta and its display of Maltese culture. The city is across the harbour from Sliema, so an easy way to reach Valletta is to take a ferry from Sliema for only a few euros. Because of Valletta’s extensive history, consider taking a walking tour to learn about its heritage.

Things to do in Valletta

  • Daily cannon firing at the Saluting Battery
  • Lower and Upper Barrakka Gardens
  • St. John’s Co-Cathedral
  • National Museum of Archaeology
  • National War Museum and Fort St. Elmo
  • Valetta Food Market
  • MUŻA – Museum of Fine Arts

Day 11 – Mdina

sicily tour malta

Inland near the centre of Malta is the tiny medieval city of Mdina. With an atmosphere that looks and feels straight out of a fairy tale, Mdina’s fortified walls are lined with baroque palaces where noble Maltese families once lived. Today, the city is a tourist destination with around 300 residents and has unreal views of surrounding fields. Mdina is well-preserved and served as a filming location for scenes in Game of Thrones , Gladiator , and Troy .

Reaching Mdina can be tricky from the east coast, but is doable via public bus. Another option is to buy a day pass for the double-decker hop-on hop-off tour bus that stops at popular sites. Although more expensive than the public bus (approx. 20 euros), the hop-on hop-off bus is more efficient and reliable.

Things to do in Mdina

  • St. Paul’s Cathedral
  • Cathedral Museum
  • Fontanella Tea Gardens
  • Visit the neighbouring town of Rabat

Day 14 – Blue Lagoon

sicily tour malta

Malta’s northern coast is where you can find fantastic natural sites, with the Blue Lagoon being the most famous. Just off the coast of Comino Island, The Blue Lagoon is pure paradise thanks to crystal-clear waters and perfect swimming conditions. The lagoon is small and gets crowded quickly early in the day. Although it’s remote, getting there is easy. Many tour companies offer boat trips to the lagoon from various harbours, including Sliema, at reasonable prices. The bigger the boat, the less you’ll pay!

Things to do at the Blue Lagoon

  • Swim all-day
  • Sip a cocktail out of a pineapple

We hope this itinerary will help you plan the ultimate two-week trip to Sicily and Malta. Be sure to let us know in the comments if you have any tips for visiting these places and if there are other spots in these areas that travellers shouldn’t miss! Cheers!

Levels of happiness of Gozo dwellers compared with Sámi’s score

sicily tour malta

The history of Gozo goes back to 5,000BC, when a group from Sicily managed to cross on a small boat, colonizing the island of Gozo for the first time (Neolithic 5000-4100BC).

These early dwellers probably lived in caves on the outskirts of San Lawrenz village on Għajn Abdul Plateau close to Il-Mixta, located in the northwest. Gozo is famed for its places of interest, some of these include the Calypso's Cave (from Homer's Odyssey , where the island is called Ogygia) and the Ġgantija Neolithic temples, which are among the oldest surviving man-made structures.

The old name of Gozo was Gaulos, which in Phoenician meant a tub. Xewkija, which is situated between Għajnsielem and the capital city, Victoria, is considered the oldest village in Gozo. The name is derived from the Maltese word xewk , meaning thistles or thorns.

With a population of around 30,000 people, Gozo offers a quieter, more laid-back lifestyle compared to its busier neighbour. Its strong family-oriented culture, with a focus on community and traditional values, parallels other southern European and Mediterranean societies.

The solemnity of its Roman Catholic religious festivals and the celebration style of regular processions and community feasting are common characteristics. In Gozo, sheep and goat farm numbers rose to 633, an impressive figure given its small size and population. Gozo hosts 392 sheep farms and 241 goat farms.

The optimum beauty of Gozo is in spring and is best enjoyed and appreciated in the countryside. It is the season when the countryside is a tapestry of vibrant colours and textures. The field patterns, reminiscent of a carefully quilted patchwork, speak of the island's agricultural heritage. The bright yellow wildflowers in the foreground add a cheerful burst of colour, contrasting beautiful characteristics with the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea.

This scene captures the tranquil beauty of Gozo, a landscape both cultivated and wild, where the sea meets the rich tapestry of fields and flowers. It's a refreshing and revitalising sight, full of life and natural beauty, though butterflies are becoming rare given the rapid development which encroaches on green areas. One is advised to proceed to Dwejra to experience a quite serene sunset.

With the sun hanging low, a bold circle of warm light sinks on the horizon, casting an amber glow across the sky, over the calm sea and the landscape; amid the boats and rock formations, the smooth water and the gentle gradient of colours in the sky - these create a beautiful contrast.

The silhouette of a fisherman standing at the water's edge adds a peaceful sense of solitude. The beauty of nature surrounds you, enveloping you in its embrace and filling your soul with a sense of wonder and awe.

This is in grave danger of being lost among the ever-growing mass of visitors, with their noise and heavy traffic. It is a pity that development has cost natives undue stress.

For example, take the picturesque St George's piazza, a focal point of religious and communal life in Gozo. Here, amid the narrow streets and historic facades, the Golden Basilica stands as a testament to the island's rich cultural heritage and deep-rooted faith, but eateries are gradually encroaching the area by erecting colourful umbrellas, never-ending dining tables and chairs.

The recent heavy influx of investment in hospitality and real estate has provided economic growth, yet this development also adds total pressures on local infrastructure and can lead to gentrification. Isolation for the island is a drawback. Notice how there is a dire need for a permanent link between Gozo and Malta. Substantial investment in replacement of old vessels is long overdue.

The volume of commuters, including vehicles crossing over to Gozo, is increasing yearly at a rate of 13%. Last year, more than a million vehicles crossed over to Gozo, obviously another million crossed to Ċirkewwa. But so far there is no central budget for new vessels. To add insult to injury, in 2019, authorities chartered a wet leased 35-year-old Greek ferry, the MV Nikolaos . Even more, the vessel can now only carry half the commissioned passengers because of safety concerns. MV Nikolaos cost €8,000 daily during the off-peak season and a higher rate of €13,000 daily during peak seasons.

This adds up to €22m of taxpayers' money, so far towards this lease. The concept of a permanent link between the two islands has been shelved. Chartering or building four modern vessels would mean less stress for people to travel between the two islands (especially for those who have no other choice due to work, health or schooling), and would also mean fewer queues during the peak season.

An explosion in property development, for a tiny island, ought to be sustainable but sadly the Planning Authority has issued multiple permits for flats with pools, guest houses and hotels. Gozo is on the brink of losing the charm that makes it unique. Now, let us draw a comparison between the environment of Gozo and another renowned community in northern Sweden, namely the Sami. The Sámi population is rated as a happy bunch. It is estimated to be around 20,000 to 40,000, but not all individuals identify actively with Sámi culture or speak one of the main languages. Sámi communities can range from small villages in northern regions to individuals and families living in urban areas. The Swedish government works hard to balance mining and forestry activities shielding the rights of the Sámi to work in their traditional lands.

Many Sámi still engage in activities such as reindeer herding, which is often conducted across vast areas of land, making the concept of community more about kinship and economic activity than a fixed geographic size. The unique cultural heritage and lifestyle of the Sámi, combined with the picturesque landscapes of the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions where they live, make them proud to enjoy a high quota of family happiness and wellbeing.

Readers may ask, can tangible efforts be made to restore the charm of Gozo and provide a higher level of wellbeing. Hope springs eternal for a rapid transformation, which will pacify Gozo ancestors who over 5,000 years ago built an impressive free-standing temple of Ggantija. A truly massive construction where the Gozo community prayed and worshipped their gods during the Neolithic Age.
