Unreconstructed, unrepentant and slightly pantomime … Snoop Dogg.

Snoop Dogg review – rap icon still dropping it like it’s hot

AO Arena, Manchester The veteran rapper may now be walking a fine line between parody and pantomime, but his California flow and copper-bottomed classics remain irresistible

S noop Dogg ’s 31-year career has seen an array of incarnations including gamechanging Doggystyle gangsta rapper, moral panic instigator, actor, chef, film-maker and anti-gun campaigner. He markets cannabis and coffee, makes food delivery adverts and once underwent a bizarre reggae incarnation as Snoop Lion. Tonight, though, he gets back to the day job of veteran rap showman. The 90-minute, 30-song performance begins with the icon walking out in his trademark braids and puffing on a blunt. With pungent weed smoke hanging over the audience, the Dogg certainly knows his vast, multi-generational crowd. “Does anyone want to get fucked up with the Dogg?” he asks, and 21,500 voices chant that yes, actually, they do.

It’s that type of show: an unreconstructed, unrepentant and slightly pantomime showcase of Snoop’s career and old-school 90s/00s hip-hop, complete with turntables, rap crews, a gun spraying dollar bills and an able support act in Eminem’s old homies, D12. At the centre, though, is what started all this: Dogg’s inimitable, instantly recognisable California flow and iconic if slightly cartoonish stage persona. He’s 51 and looks older, but has never lost his endearing, mischievous grin at the ridiculousness of where life has taken him, whether guesting with Katy Perry (California Gurls) or suggesting a song called Wet for Prince William’s stag do: an unexpected guilty pleasure tonight.

Rather than compete with rap’s social commentators, the dirty Dogg doubles down. Ain’t No Fun (“if the homies can’t have none”) is thoroughly disreputable. Performing Sexual Eruption with scantily-clad pole dancers under half his age walks – or perhaps stumbles – a fine line between pantomime villainy and cringe. At best, the show entertainingly celebrates hip-hop’s second golden age and lifestyle and includes heartfelt tributes to deceased stars 2Pac, the Notorious BIG and Nate Dogg. Perhaps if he had not diversified so much, the Dogg would have made more copper-bottomed classics such as Gin and Juice or Drop It Like It’s Hot. Still, he is a true one-off, and when he asks Manchester Who Am I? there is only one answer: “Snoop Dawwggy Dawwwwg.”

Snoop Dogg has announced the rescheduled 2023 dates for his ‘I Wanna Thank Me’ UK and Ireland tour. The hip-hop icon will kick off the arena jaunt at Belfast’s SSE Arena on March 14, followed by dates in Manchester, Glasgow, London, Dublin, Leeds, and Birmingham.

Snoop will be joined by his peers and collaborators Warren G, Tha Dogg Pound, Obie Trice and D12. Irish rap duo Versatile are also hitting the road with the icons of the West Coast scene.

Meanwhile, Snoop and Dr. Dre have collaborated on a new album called “Missionary.” The hip-hop idols have teamed up on their first new music in three decades.

He spilled in October: “Me and Dr. Dre have been working on an album for the past two months.”

Asked about the sex position moniker, he replied: “The first album was ‘Doggystyle’…”

The album title confirmation comes after Eminem shared a snap in the studio with the pair in September and captioned it: “Just a few bros…hangin out.”

Snoop and Dre reunited earlier this year for an epic performance at the Super Bowl halftime show – along with Eminem , Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar . And following whispers that the pair were in the studio, Snoop told Entertainment Tonight : “We’re cooking up a little something. I don’t wanna talk about it too much, but we’re back together again.

“It’s been 30 years since we worked on a record, and we’re doin’ something, we’re workin’ on something.”

Snoop shot to fame in 1992 when he featured on Dre’s debut solo single, “Deep Cover” and his solo LP The Chronic .

Earlier this year, Snoop bought Death Row Records, the label that launched his career. The rapper – whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr – acquired the company from MNRK Music Group for an undisclosed sum.

The 51-year-old megastar said in February: “I am thrilled and appreciative of the opportunity to acquire the iconic and culturally significant Death Row Records brand, which has immense untapped future value. “It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding members. This is an extremely meaningful moment for me.”

Elsewhere, Snoop Dogg has also revealed he used to write his lyrics on a typewriter in the early days of his career , which he borrowed from  2Scoops of G-funk group The Dove Shack. He said that 2Scoops was “organized and shit”, so concluded he was “just gonna type my shit up”, adding “I used to type like 65 words a minute”.

Earlier this month, Snoop and hip-hop veterans  Ice Cube , Too $hort and E-40 released their new album under Mount Westmore, ‘Snoop, Cube, 40, $hort’.

In a three-star review , NME described the record as a “muddled, but sometimes brilliant, cruise down Sunset Boulevard”.

It continued: “‘Snoop, Cube, 40, $hort’ isn’t completely devoid of praise; having to accommodate four distinct styles and personalities is no simple task. But while there are moments of brilliance, it’s clear there are too many chefs in the kitchen.”

snoop dogg uk tour 2023 review

West Coast rap legend Snoop Dogg has come a long way since being discovered by Dr. Dre in the early 1990. As impressive as he was when guesting on Dre’s The Chronic in 1992, few could have guessed he’d go on to global fame, tens of millions of record sales, and a career in movies and TV. And that’s only part of the story, from battles with the law to reinvention as a reggae artist.

He was born Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr. in Long Beach, California, on October 20, 1971. His “Snoop Dogg” nickname came from his mother because she thought he looked like Snoopy from the Peanuts cartoon. He played the piano and sang at his local Baptist church, before starting rap in sixth grade. After graduating high school, Snoop was arrested several times for drug possession and spent time in prison. He was also associated with the Rollin’ 20 Crips Gang. He started making music as a way out of his troubles and recorded early demos with his cousin Nate Dogg and friend Warren G as 213. A track on one of these came to the attention of Dr. Dre who invited Snoop — then rapping under the name Snoop Doggy Dogg — to audition. From there they collaborated on a song called “Deep Cover” for the soundtrack of the film for the same name; and Snoop became the key rapper on Dre’s hugely successful first solo album, The Chronic, in 1992.

Snoop’s first album, the Dre-produced Doggystyle (1993), climbed its way to the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s hip-hop and Top 200 charts, based in part on the success of the singles “ Who Am I (What’s My Name)? ” and “ Gin and Juice .”

Next came a short film called Murder Was the Case , the soundtrack of which went double platinum. Snoop’s next album, The Doggfather (1996), also reached the top of the charts, despite the absence of Dre, who had left Death Row Records over a contract dispute. Snoop then left Death Row himself, falling out with label mogul Suge Knight and moving to Master P’s No Limit Records. He scored the top slot on the hip-hop charts with his next two albums: Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told (1998) and No Limit Top Dogg (1999). His last album for No Limit, The Last Meal , came in 2000 and sold over 2 million copies. By now his sound had become less “gangsta rap” and somewhat smoother.

Snoop continued to make music throughout the noughts, enjoying a big hit in 2004 with the chart-topping single “ Drop It Like It’s Hot ,” which sparked several fruitful collaborations with Pharrell Williams . He reunited with Warren G and Nate Dogg as 213 to drop the album The Hard Way in 2004. In 2007, Snoop became the first artist to release a track — “ It’s The D.O.G ” — as a ringtone prior to its release as a single.

He also branched out into acting during the same period and appeared in several films, including Starsky & Hutch, The Wash and Training Day. He also made guest appearances on television shows, including The L Word and Weeds, and starred in his own E! reality show, Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood , in 2007. He was part of a sketch show, Doggy Fizzle Televizzle , and participated in the Comedy Central Roast of the future president Donald Trump. He also uses his likeable laconic personality to good effect in a new venture for VH1, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party , where he and Martha Stewart host dinner parties for various celebrities.

Outside of music, Snoop has made investments in the burgeoning cannabis business. In November 2015 he launched Leafs By Snoop, becoming the first A-list celebrity to brand a line of cannabis products. That same year he also launched a new digital-media venture called Merry Jane, which focuses on the latest marijuana news. In May 2017 Snoop dropped his fifteenth studio album Neva Left . He also released a gospel album titled Bible of Love in March 2018.

He is held in high esteem and affection by hip-hop fans worldwide, and is one of the most recognizable faces and voices of the whole genre, even to those who don’t listen to his music. He has the distinction for having the most Grammy nominations of any music artist— 17 to date — without having won one. But as Snoop Dogg shows few signs of retiring, don’t write him off just yet.

As impressive as he was when guesting on Dre's The Chronic in 1992, few could have guessed he'd go on to global fame, tens of millions of record sales, and a career in movies and TV. And that's only part of the story, from battles with the law to reinvention as a reggae artist.

He was born Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr. in Long Beach, California, on October 20, 1971. His "Snoop Dogg" nickname came from his mother because she thought he looked like Snoopy from the Peanuts cartoon. He played piano and sang at his local Baptist church, before starting rap in sixth grade.

After graduating high school, Snoop was arrested several times for drug possession and spent time in prison. He was also associated with the Rollin' 20 Crips Gang. He started making music as a way out of his troubles and recorded early demos with his cousin Nate Dogg and friend Warren G as 213.

A track on one of these came to the attention of Dr. Dre who invited Snoop - then rapping under the name Snoop Doggy Dogg - to audition. From there they collaborated on a song called "Deep Cover" for the soundtrack of the film for the same name; and Snoop became the key rapper on Dre's hugely successful first solo album, The Chronic, in 1992.

Snoop's first album, the Dre-produced Doggystyle (1993), climbed its way to the No. 1 spot on Billboard's hip-hop and Top 200 charts, based in part on the success of the singles "Who Am I (What's My Name)?" and "Gin and Juice."

Next came a short film called Murder Was the Case, the soundtrack of which went double platinum. Snoop's next album, Tha Doggfather (1996), also reached the top of the charts, despite the absence of Dre, who had left Death Row over a contract dispute. Snoop then left Death Row himself, falling out with label mogul Suge Knight and moving to Master P's No Limit Records.

He scored the top slot on the hip-hop charts with his next two albums: Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told (1998) and No Limit Top Dogg (1999). His last album for No Limit, The Last Meal, came in 2000 and sold over 2 million copies. By now his sound had become less "gangsta rap" and somewhat smoother.

Snoop continued to make music throughout the noughts, enjoying a big hit in 2004 with the chart-topping single "Drop It Like It's Hot," which sparked several fruitful collaborations with Pharrell Williams. He reunited with Warren G and Nate Dogg as 213 to drop the album The Hard Way in 2004. In 2007, Snoop became the first artist to release a track - "It's The DOG" - as a ringtone prior to its release as a single.

He also branched out into acting during the same period and appeared in several films, including Starsky & Hutch, The Wash and Training Day. He also made guest appearances on television shows, including The L Word and Weeds, and starred in his own E! reality show, Snoop Dogg's Father Hood, in 2007.

He was part of a sketch show, Doggy Fizzle Televizzle, and participated in the Comedy Central Roast of the future president Donald Trump. He also uses his likeable laconic personality to good effect in a new venture for VH1, Martha & Snoop's Potluck Dinner Party, where he and Martha Stewart host dinner parties for various celebrities.

In May 2017 Snoop dropped his fifteenth studio album Neva Left. He also released a gospel album titled Bible of Love in March 2018.

He is held in high esteem and affection by hip-hop fans worldwide, and is one of the most recognizable faces and voices of the whole genre, even to those who don't listen to his music. He has the distinction for having the most Grammy nominations of any music artist- 17 to date - without having won one. But as Snoop Dogg shows few signs of retiring, don't write him off just yet.

Snoop Dogg announces rescheduled tour with Manchester 2023 date

The West Coast rapper is returning to the UK in March 2023 with support from Warren G, D-12, Xzibit and more

  • 10:59, 21 DEC 2022

The rap icon will be appearing at the Manchester AO Arena on Wednesday, March 15, 2023

American rapper and West Coast legend, Snoop Dogg will be making his presence felt in the UK once again as he announces a seven-date tour for March 2023, as part of his rescheduled UK and Ireland tour.

The long-time king of rap royalty was forced to cancel previous UK dates for 2022 due to "unforeseen scheduling conflicts, including family obligations and upcoming tv and film projects."

His newly announced tour dates form part of the rescheduled dates which will see Snoop and support acts including Warren G, D-12, Versatile, The Dogg Pound, Obie Trice, and Xzibit crew play to over 20,000 fans at that Manchester AO Arena on Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

The rapper also collaborated with DJ Drama on the album Gangsta Grillz: I Still Got It' as well as releasing 'Snoop Dog Presents Death Row Summer 2022', two 'NFT Drop' albums and his latest LP, 'BODR'.

Daisy Jackson

Snoop Dogg has announced a massive gig at the AO Arena in Manchester in 2023 as he finally reconfirms tour dates.

The legendary rapper was meant to perform here in 2020 but had to move it due to the pandemic, and then pushed his show back again earlier this year.

But now his UK and Ireland tour is all set for next spring, with some huge names coming on tour with him – including Xzibit as a special guest for England and Scotland.

Also joining the tour will be West Coast hip hop royalty Warren G, Tha Dogg Pound, Obie Trice and D12, plus Irish rap duo Versatile.

With more than 25 years under his belt in his rap career, Snoop Dogg (previously known as Snoop Doggy Dogg and, briefly, Snoop Lion) will be performing from his massive collection of 19 solo studio albums and five collaborative albums at the AO Arena .

One of the biggest, if not the biggest, popstars in the world right now will be releasing a brand-new album this Friday, and there’s a dedicated listening party happening in Manchester especially for the occasion.

Yes, we’re of course talking about Taylor Swift .

In case you aren’t a Swiftie, or you just generally weren’t aware, Taylor Swift announced back in early February that she would be unleashing her eleventh studio album , titled The Tortured Poets Department , on the world on 19 April.

Just like anything the 34-year-old singer-songwriter does, the surprise announcement of the new album – which is a follow-up to her 2022 critically-acclaimed and GRAMMY award-winning album, Midnights – pretty much broke the internet when it happened, and her dedicated fans have been counting down the days ever since.

Now, after months of eagerly waiting, the big day is finally happening this Friday, and in a bid to properly mark what a massive day it will be, one popular Manchester venue has decided to host a dedicated listening party , so that Swifties can unite under one roof and celebrate the special occasion together.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

Fairfield Social Club (FSC) which has recently opened its doors in the heart of Manchester city centre , is inviting fans to “gather with your closest Swifties” and head on down to its Green Quarter venue this Friday for a night that’s “dedicated to Tay Tay and her legacy”.

Not only will you get to hear The Tortured Poets Department in full from start to finish surrounded by dozens of fellow fans, but there’ll also be a bunch of other Swift-themed activities too.

These include a Taylor Swift pub quiz with questions to all about her life and groundbreaking career to test your knowledge, friendship bracelet-making sessions, and just the chance to share the love and swap stories with other Swifties.

If all of that didn’t sound brilliant enough as it is, there’s also set to be a selection of themed cocktails to sip whilst you spend time ruminating on what Taylor meant in the lyrics of her songs only released a few hours prior.

Oh, and the best bit? FSC promises there “won’t be a Scooter Braun in sight” on the night.

  • You can now take a university course on Taylor Swift
  • Eurovision 2024 final to be screened live in cinemas across Greater Manchester
  • Taylor Swift and The 1975’s Matty Healy are reportedly ‘no longer romantically involved’

The Tortured Poets Department Listening Party is taking over Fairfield Social Club this Friday 19 April from 7pm right through until 10pm – with tickets now on sale setting you back just £6 each, and already selling fast.

Smash-hit musical Kinky Boots is heading out on a tour of the UK next year, and the talented cast will be stopping off here in Manchester.

The Broadway and West End phenomenon, which is based on a true story and is an adaptation of a 2005 film of the same name, has become known and loved by musical theatre fans all across the globe since its stage debut back in 2012, and has scooped up several Tonys, Olivier Awards, and GRAMMYs along the way.

And now, it’s set for a revival starring Strictly Come Dancing ‘s Johannes Radebe, and the production will be touring the UK and Ireland from January 2025.

Kinky Boots The Musical features a score by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein, and this new production will be directed by Artistic Director, Nikolai Foster – who has famously helmed productions of The Wizard of Oz and Billy Elliot , to name a few – as well as starring the fan-favourite Strictly pro as Lola, alongside and rising star Dan Partridge as Charlie Price.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the Kinky Boots story, here’s brief rundown.

After inheriting his family’s failing shoe factory and with a relationship on the rocks, life is proving to be very challenging for Charlie Price, but that is until he meets Lola – a drag queen whose “sparkle and unsteady heels” might just hold the answer to saving the struggling business.

The 2025 revival production is already being billed as “guaranteed to raise you up” and “celebrate everybody’s individuality” when it arrives here in Manchester next February.

“I’m so excited that audiences will get to see it again, in a new production, as it’s like a happy pill, and we could all use some of that right now, so I can’t think of a better time or place to relaunch this special show in its place of origin.”
