In a world where most backpacks are very similar – the Osprey Sojourn 60 really stands out and is a one of a kind solution for certain people.

That’s because unlike traditional backpacks, the Osprey Sojourn 60 is a backpack  and  a suitcase. As a full time female traveler, I’ve tried all types of packs, and I can confidently say that this one is my favorite.

Like I said, after traveling with this backpack on wheels for a few months, I can confidently say it’s one of the best travel backpacks on the market.

But this bag is not ideal for everyone. Before you read this whole review, let’s make sure this bag is for you, because I only recommend the Osprey Sojourn 60 for a certain kind of traveler…

• Are looking for an ultralight backpack. The wheels and overall design means it’s definitely heavier than a typical bag
• Are interested in having a backpack first. The Sojourn 60 is definitely best looked at as a roller FIRST and a backpack SECOND
• Are not interested in using a roller (obviously)
• Are doing a ton of camping, hiking or trekking (seriously, the backpack feature on the Osprey Sojourn is only meant for use every now and then)
• Are a man looking for a super-manly pack (this is definitely more popularly used as a women’s travel bag)
• Want a carry on. This is way to big and will be checked. Read this if you want a great carry on travel bag

Those few points aside, the Osprey Sojourn 60 is truly magnificent!

Ultimately, the Osprey Sojourn 60 is a big bag that can carry a ton of stuff and is great for a woman who wants to pack to her hearts content without having to carry that load on her shoulders (but also having the option!).

It’s no secret that here at the Broke Backpacker, our favorite bags are usually made by the Osprey brand . This is for a few reasons…

Osprey bags are typically rich with features, and as the video shows, this bag is no exception. I particularly like that while Osprey bags are loaded with features, but they never come at the sacrifice of usability. There might be tons of pockets and zippers, but nothing too flashy. Everything serves a purpose.

Let’s take a look at the some of the best (and worst) features of the Osprey Sojourn 60.

As of writing this, the Osprey Sojourn comes in three sizes…

I’m  5’1 and I have only personally tested the 60L, but I can say that even if I had to go back and choose again – I’d stick to the 60. This is for a few reasons.

As rolling luggage, the 60L is a perfect size. It never feels too big or clunky, and while it’s not able to be carried on any planes, it’s nice to know I can fit most anything I need in it.

But, while it’s still great, as a backpack I will say that the 60L can sometimes feel HUGE.

The foundation and design with the wheels is surprisingly comfortable, but it’s not very compact, and the additional dimensions to accompany the wheels make the bag feel a bit daunting at times. It’s never overwhelming, but it is worth noting.

If you travel light, I could see an argument to be made for the 40L (but make sure you also have a great day-bag .

As for the 80L – I could see it being efficient for travelers with a ton of stuff to pack, but as a backpack, it’s going to be HUGE.

If you are under 5’4, the 60L is going to feel big, and the 80L is going to feel massive.

Personally, I say go with the 60L.

The Osprey Sojourn Weight

There’s no way around it, the Osprey Sojourn is heavy. It’s the tradeoff for big, sexy, durable wheels, but it’s a heavy tradeoff.

• 45L weighs 8lbs
• 60L weighs 8.5lbs
• 80L weights 9lbs

The small differences in weight is surprising but also encouraging for anyone considering purchasing the 80L.

The Osprey Sojourn Dimensions

Compared to other bags, the Sojourn could possibly have the largest dimensions out of any bag I’ve seen or tried yet. This is not a problem as a suitcase/roller, but can cause obvious problems when being worn as a backpack.

• 45L dimensions in cm- 56h x 36w x 23d
• 60L dimensions in cm – 64h x 36w x 35d
• 80L dimensions in cm – 71h x 36w x 35d

Again, this is because of those bid ole’ wheels!

If you want the perfectly sized bag, Osprey suggests measuring your torso. Doing so will enable you to find a backpack that is a perfect fit for your body.

I’ve had to use the grab handles a few times, and I’m glad they are a feature. The top handle is the same fabric that the bag is made out of, and the bottom handle is a solid plastic grip. Not a game changer, but useful every now and then.

In a word, these wheeled backpacks are awesome.

Don’t think traditional-luggage wheels. The wheels on this bad boy aare big, strong and heavy duty and can handle tougher terrain. This is the biggest selling point of the Osprey Sojourn 60. It’t not typical suitcase wheels, it’s a heavy-duty chassis that can handle cobblestone roads and mountains if need be.

Compression straps are fairly standard for modern packs (especially hiking packs) but these straps are particularly heavy-duty, and very helpful. This is because they aren’t just the typical nylon-straps, but you get additional compression-support from the straps holding it to the bag.

Top pockets are standard, but this one is HUGE. You’ll be able to fit your passport, wallet, phone and a big toiletries bag in this pocket if need be.

Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

As I mentioned, the most important thing to keep in mind with this backpack is that it is a roller first , and a backpack second .

The biggest reason for this is comfort. Yes, as a backpack the Osprey Sojourn 60 is certainly comfortable, but it’s not the most comfortable backpack on the market. But that’s not a strike against Osprey – the bag isn’t designed to be the most comfortable on the planet.

As a luggage-roller, it’s extremely comfortable to drag along and easy to direct. The only issue with the rolling-comfort is that the wheels are not 360 degrees like some luggage is. But then again, luggage wheels are nowhere near as durable.

Osprey Sojourn 60 Suspension (Nice back support!)

I don’t want it to seem like I don’t think that the Osprey Sojourn 60 isn’t comfy though – it is!

This is due to an extremely well designed suspension system. Osprey makes it their mission to save our backs, and you’ll feel especially thankful with the Sojourn.

Unfortunately there is no dedicated sleeve for a laptop or tablet of any kind.

But if you get creative, the largest mesh compartment is  big enough to fit a medium sized laptop or tablet. I wouldn’t recommend using this for your laptop or tablet too often, but it can get the job done.

Remember, while the Osprey Sojourn 60 could handle tough terrains, I do not recommend actively hiking with this bag Neither the rolling setup nor the backpack setup is good for that.

This is a travel backpack. 100%. So if you are looking for a travel backpack, you’ll be pleased to know it’s definitely one of the best on the market.

If you are traveling with the bag, I do recommend getting comfortable with how to transform between its two settings.

As you can see in the pictures above, this is what the bag looks like in it’s two forms. Roller on the left, backpack on the right.

Getting from backpack to roller status is super simple. You simply tuck the bottom into the bag, pull down the straps, and vuala! You have a roller!

But getting from roller to backpack is much more challenging, and is where more work is required.

In particular, it can be difficult to connect the bottom of the suspension to the bottom of the bag.

If you see the straps on the just inside of the wheels – they can take a bit of muscle-power to connect to their respective buckles.

But overall the Osprey Sojourn 60L is a truly great travel backpack.

Flaw #1 – Not great as a backpack

If you are an avid outdoor backpacker or hiker, this is not your bag.

This bag is great for travelers who don’t plan on using the backpack setting too often.

Flaw #2 – No outside pockets

While simplicity is good, this is a bit strange for an Osprey pack to be this barren on the outside.

No external pockets or zips or mesh containers gives you a bit less creativity and storage.

Flaw #3 – No Laptop compartment

The good old days of electronic-free travel are behind us, as nowadays a ton of travelers bring some sort of laptop or tablet on their journeys.

Here’s my two cents.

As a full-time Digital Nomad, I can say that this bag is perfect for anyone who moves around a lot. If you are a Digital Nomad or working professional, this can totally be your travel bag, but I’d look into investing into a day bag with a laptop sleeve.

You can use the mesh pocket for a laptop, but it’s a bit flimsy and definitely not designed for it.

Love the review and can’t wait to get one, two actually, one for me and one for my wife! I’m looking to purchase the Sojourn 60 however it looks like it is no longer available. I can only find the 80 or the 45. Do you have any feedback or info if they are in the middle of an upgrade to the 60?

Great review! I’ve just started to look at Osprey as I’m tired of the substandard luggage that I’ve used over the years. I’m just a standard traveler that flies 1-3 times per year. My old awkward roller bag has been compromised by much rough airport handling over the years. I’m going on an 11 night Ireland trip in November.

I’d heard of Osprey’s reputation and stellar Warranty so I stopped into an REI last week to check them out. They did not have any of the “Transporter” series there which I thought might suit me. I originally liked the idea of having a daypack attached that I could remove as my carry-on and re-attach as a single bag at baggage claim. I did check out thoroughly a Porter 40L and really like it’s features and compression system (I called them bat-wings). That will make the perfect carry-on / daypack I think. And it seemed like the compression panels/straps could be an additional security measure.

I still needed a good wheeled bag and after looking long and hard, decided on the Sojourn 60L as it appeared to have the best wheel / backpack straps (and waist belt) design between it and the Meridian.

I hadn’t seen this review until after I made my decision but it reinforces my choice. I’m traveling to AZ in a couple weeks for AZ Decompression (regional burning man event) to give these a test.

Great thorough review. I just ordered a Sojourn 22 today and read this after ordering it, but it confirms my choice, especially for a shorter female:) It is replacing my older Ozone with backpack and removable daypack whose zipper broke. It is heavier than the Ozone, but more sturdily built as you note.

There is an Osprey Daylite Plus daypack that can be used with the Sojourn which provides quite a bit of flexibility (eg laptop sleeve or hydration pouch, mesh external pouches) at low additional weight, albeit as an additional purchase. The Sojourn has external daisy chain attach points which I think will be very useful in many situations. And hopefully the Sojourn will adhere to most carryon restrictions at 22 x 14 x 9.

When you travel far and pack light, the Sojour 60L/25” is the pack for the job. Already a great roller, the stowaway AG inspired backpack suspension expands your trips horizons. Rolling luggage is great, but sometimes the terrain is too rough and you need a backpack. The Sojourn’s quick deploy AG inspired ventilated backpack suspension allows this and it carries more comfortably than some competitors backpacking packs. Stop everything guys – I’ve found the one! The best wheeled backpack for travel, that is. After years of travelling with my trusty 60L strapped to my back , I decided it was time to make life easier with a wheeled backpack. And that was when I discovered the Osprey Sojourn 60… a dream of a backpack that’s perfectly sized, crazy durable, and absolutely amazing for big trips.

Before we get started: yes, Osprey sent me the Sojourn 60 for free to review. But all the following opinions are my own. After extensive testing around the world, I really do love this wheeled backpack!

Why Buy a Wheeled Backpack?

First things first: do you really need a wheeled backpack? For years I kind of felt like they were pointless. If you’re going for wheels, you might as well get a wheeled suitcase, right?

Wrong! A wheeled backpack gives you ultimate flexibility. You can wear it on your back when you need to, or drag it behind you when you don’t – the best of both worlds.  You still have the backpack as a status symbol, marking you out as a “proper traveller” (not a phrase I’m a fan of, but travel snobs love to judge), but you also have the convenience of dragging your luggage on wheels behind you.

If you’re a fan of ease and comfort, or you think you’re more of a flashpacker than a backpacker, wheels are for you. Convinced? Then you’ll be needing the world’s best wheeled backpack won’t you? Meet the Osprey Sojourn…

Osprey Sojourn 60 or 80?

The Osprey Sojourn series comes in two size options – 60L and 80L. Honestly – I think the 80 would be too big for most travellers. The 60 is borderline too big for me (a 5’4″ lady in medium shape) and when it’s full I struggle with it on my back. If you’re buying this as a backpack for travel and plan to carry it on your back (even just occasionally) I think the 60 will be more than enough, unless you’re a Marine or something. It’s a great size and fits MORE than enough. As I will now demonstrate…

How much does the Osprey Sojourn 60 fit?

Loads! The 60L capacity of the Osprey Sojourn is MORE than enough to hold everything for a RTW backpacking trip.

I took it on my India trip with me and packed 2 medium packing cubes, one small packing cube, my toiletries, several pairs of shoes, plus all the other backpacking essentials  I need on a trip. And there was still enough room for all the souvenirs I bought myself in India’s markets (8 scarves… why?!).

On my recent trip to Canada, I packed a sleeping bag, 2 packing cubes, a couple of bulky jumpers, hiking boots, and all my tech. It was the most I’ve ever crammed into the Osprey Sojourn 60 and I’m happy to report that it all fit perfectly.

Pockets and Practicality

After the wheels, my second favourite thing about the Osprey Sojourn is that it opens all the way around. I’ve mentioned this before as a must-have feature for a travel backpack , because it’s super important. Most backpacks open up at the top, and you have to unpack everything to get to the bottom. That’s great for short hiking trips but impractical for long-term backpacking trips. Lie the sojourn on it’s back and you can unzip the entire front all the way around and fold it right back, for super easy access to your whole bag at once.

There are also LOADS of pockets and the backpack is super practical. There’s a huge top pocket for quick access to small essentials – I like to use it to store all my charging cables and plug adapters etc. But it’s made of waterproof, wipe-clean fabric so you could use it for liquids too.

Then there are two internal side pockets down the length of the bag, one mesh one and one zip-away pocket made, again, from a sturdy waterproof fabric. And on the bag’s fold-old front there are two more mesh pockets – again perfect for cables or small bits that you don’t want to get lost in the main part of the bag.

Will it Last?

Over the past six months or so I’ve really put this backpack to the test, dragging it around a fair few countries in my quest to spend as little time as possible in the UK*. And in my experience, this is a seriously tough wheeled backpack. The wheels are big and chunky, and feel a lot more sturdy than the spinny plastic wheels that normally come on wheely suitcases. Other than to test-drive it, I’ve honestly never had to put it on my back. The wheels were more than a match for even the most potholed and dusty roads in India!

The bag itself is made from ballistic nylon, and the chassis from ABS polymer plastic. I don’t know what those words mean either. But Osprey promise lightweight durability and that’s what they’ve delivered. It’s such a solid, chunky feeling backpack and it feels almost indestructible. Everything from the sturdy wheels to the fabric feels strong and capable.

*joking, obviously. That’s the opposite of my current life goal. 

Road test – Using the Osprey Sojourn 60

As I mentioned above, I’ve never actually had to use the backpack system on the Osprey Sojourn during my travels. But I have tested it out, and I’m really impressed by how it works. When you’re not using it, the backpack system zips away behind some fabric to keep all the straps safe – great for taking flights or bus journeys.

If you need to use the backpack you can unzip that and pop out the back and hip straps. You can easily adjust the height of the back straps for the perfect fit and comfort, and the breathable mesh back means you won’t get too sweaty back there!

Zip the straps away again, and you have a nice, sleek, rolling piece of luggage. I love the super sturdy, retractable handle, which glides in and out easily when you press the button. No jerkyness or weak plastic parts here!

In short, I cannot recommend the Osprey Sojourn 60 enough. Everything about this backpack impressed me. It works so well, it glides along over almost any surface, and it feels like it’s built to last forever. If you need a wheeled backpack for your travels, you really need to take a look at the Sojourn!

Please if you’re doing a review don’t mislead people in the headline by not actually Testing the shoulder straps properly! It’s Pointless. It’s actually deterred me from bothering to look at any of your other articles lest I get to the bottom and find some excuse for not FULLY testing what you claim to be TESTING.

Wow! I’m really sorry, but I think you’ve misunderstood what I meant. I have tested out the straps and of course tried the backpack out, whilst full, with the shoulder straps. What I meant was that in all the time I’ve been travelling with this pack I’ve never actually needed to pick it up and strap it on to my back – the wheels are sturdy enough and decent enough that I’m always able to wheel it even on difficult terrain! My only complaint would be that its a big backpack and when it’s full it would be a touch too heavy for me to carry very long distances because of course the wheels add a bit of weight. Over short distances it’s fine as a backpack but I’d say its designed to be wheeled the majority of the time. Hope that helps with your decision making. The Osprey Sojourn 60 comes in Black or Koseret Green and has a generous 60 litre capacity with three internal storage pockets, internal compression straps and an external top pocket for storing a wash bag  or accessories you need easy access to.

This wheeled backpack oozes quality and is constructed from durable materials, with an ABS polymer plastic wheel chassis and rugged polyurethane wheels, capable of handling a wide range of terrains on your travels. If you’re utilising the wheels, simply push the button on the retractable handle and extend it to a suitable height, you can then quickly and easily pull the bag along.

The backpack straps are a great feature whether you’re in a hurry, in a crowded area or don’t fancy wheeling the Sojourn over uneven terrain. The backpack straps and hip belt are located behind a zipped panel and all you have to do is clip the hip and shoulder straps into place and you’re ready for backpack style carrying. Osprey have also made the harness adjustable for a more comfortable fit and it can be removed if you don’t need this feature for your trip, this also shaves some weight off the bag if you’re trying to keep your luggage as lightweight as possible.

On the outside of the bag, Osprey have included two padded grab handles for easy loading and an external ‘straight jacket’ compression system, which compresses the bag and keeps your luggage protected. If you want a daypack for the Sojourn, the Osprey Farpoint Daypack is the perfect choice as it clips on the front via the straightjacket system.

Product description

When you travel far and pack light, the Sojourn 60L/25" is the pack for the job. Already a great roller, the stowaway AG inspired backpack suspension expands your trips horizons. Rolling luggage is great, but sometimes the terrain is too rough and you need a backpack. The Sojourn's quick deploy AG inspired ventilated backpack suspension allows this and it carries more comfortably than some competitors backpacking packs. The system is adjustable for multiple torso sizes and is removable when you need more space. In rolling mode the dual-tube extended handle controls unwieldy loads when the going gets rough, and multiple padded and molded handles make it easy to maneuver this pack out of taxis or tuk-tuks. Extra gear can be strapped to the external daisy chains, or add on our Daylite pack to added flexibility and storage. A top zippered liquids pocket, padded sidewalls, internal compression straps, fabric wings, and four zippered compartments keep your gear organized and protected. When the pack isn't fully loaded, use the Straight Jacket compression straps to cinch it down.

Why the Osprey Sojourn is by far the Best Backpack for Travel!

Backpack or suitcase? Straps or wheels? 60 L or 80 L? What is the best backpack for travel? These are questions I debated back and forth before setting out on this most recent trip around Europe. I’m now the proud owner of an Osprey Sojourn 80L wheeled backpack, but getting here was quite the story.

Deciding on the Osprey Sojourn Backpack

When I first set out on my big 15-month round-the-world trip I carried a 60L backpack. Even though the size of my pack forced me to adopt a minimalist packing style , I still found the weight to be a little too much for me.

Sure, it was super convenient because I didn’t have to worry about staircases, uneven terrain, or cobbled streets, but I have a small frame and I found that if I had to carry my backpack longer than 10 minutes I would end up with really sore shoulders.

For this next trip, I knew I would be gone 5-6 months and I couldn’t bear the thought of hauling around a backpack again, so I took a bit of a gamble and decided to pack a suitcase.

That was a mistake.

My suitcase (which was designed by a pretty well-known airline!) lasted a grand total of 1 month .

First one of the wheels exploded (how does that even happen?), and then a second wheel got filed down by rough pavement to the point where it wasn’t even round anymore. Not only did the wheels let me down, but I also found it really difficult to use a suitcase to get around Europe .

The lack of escalators in the metro system (I’m looking at you Paris!), the construction and renovations along major streets, and the compact apartment buildings with no elevators (try hauling a suitcase up to the 6th floor!) made it a bit of a pain to get around.

By the time I arrived in Amsterdam in August, I was dragging a limp suitcase that no longer rolled.

I needed a new piece of luggage ASAP so my first order of business was to get myself to a travel equipment store and find the best backpack for travel .

So what is the best backpack for travel?

There’s a wheeled backpack that I have been eyeing for well over a year and even though it comes with a bit of a heavy price tag, I was kind of hoping they would have it in the store.

Well, imagine my surprise when I walked into the shop and right at the centre of their display was the Osprey Sojourn Wheeled Luggage (28-Inch/80L)  tantalizing me with its straps-and-wheels combo – the best of both worlds. 

I did a look around the store to see if there were any similar models out there, but in the end I knew which one I wanted.

Retailing at $319 USD this is easily the most expensive piece of luggage I have ever purchased, but considering this wheeled backpack is like my home and carries my possessions from place to place, I figured it was a worthy expense.

I bought it and have now been using it for 2 months – so far it’s been a dream!

Why I think the Osprey Sojourn is the best backpack for travel:

It is a backpack and a suitcase rolled into one. 

The thing I love most about this bag is the versatility.

I wheel it around most of the time, but if I ever encounter stairs or uneven ground, I know that I can pull out the straps and use it as a backpack.

These are two key functions that I think any piece of luggage should have. I’m still amazed that there aren’t more brands designing this suitcase / backpack crossover.

It has large wheels.

The wheels on this suitcase are big! I think back on the little wheels of my old suitcase that let me down, and it’s no wonder they didn’t last me. The ones on the Osprey are made for the road.

It’s a tough bag.

Everything from the material to the zippers feels really strong and ready to withstand whatever you throw at it.

So far my Osprey Sojourn has been hauled up trains, thrown in coaches, and endured that mysterious journey down airport conveyor belts. She’s still going strong.

It has lots of little compartments.

The Osprey Sojourn has two long compartments that run on either side of the bag’s interior, and as well as smaller compartments (one on the back and one on the front) of the bag.

This combined with packing cubes makes it really easy to keep everything in there organized.

It comes in different sizes.

Since I tend to go on longer trips and I often have to pack for more than one season, the 80L Osprey Sojourn backpack is great for me, but they also have a smaller 60L model that works for shorter trips or light packers.

The verdict?

This bag is so good that now even Sam wants to swap his old Osprey backpack for the Osprey Sojourn Wheeled Luggage. I think that says it all.

Wow, this looks incredible. I’ve had my eye on a new bag for a while now, since the pack I used in 1998 isn’t really going to cut it next time I hit the road and the bike panniers I used on my last trip only really work if you’re bringing your bike!

It’s a really great bag. It is a bit of an investment, so if you have an Osprey retailer near you I’d suggest you go in and have a look for yourself and test it out, but I’ve been really happy with it so far. I just can’t get over the size of the wheels and how well it handles different terrain.

I have an Osprey Farpoint 70L backpack which I love but the option of having wheels when I want to wheel it and straps for stairs?…love! I also adore my Briggs and Riley suitcase (that sucker is tough) but I may need to consider changing things up for my next big trip. Going to check if this bag is available locally around here. Hmm…

We have the exact bag. We traded in our backpacks last August when we were at home and have never been happier. We actually have never broken out the backpack straps…no need to!

I’ve hardly had to use the straps either, but it’s nice having that option if I ever need to. I find that because the wheels on this bag are so large, it can handle most of the terrain that my old wheeled suitcase struggled with.

I have the 60L version of this same bag and agree – it’s THE BEST. I’ve been using mine heavily for more than a year, and it still looks brand new. Very impressed with the quality, and it’s the perfect size for most trips!

It’s good to know that you’re happy with the 60L. I ended up going with the larger size because I tend to pack for more than one season and autumn/winter clothes are kind of bulky…plus maybe I’m a bit of an overpacker!

Thanks for this post. I’m going to New Zealand (from the US) in a few months and I’ve been debating this topic for weeks. Osprey is the recommended brand by my backpacking brother and I was considering getting one of their bags without wheels, but now this has me on the fence again.

A rolling suitcase may be handy at times and in Europe, but just something to throw out there is that in some parts of the world like developing nations with cramped buses and limited paved roads, the wheels would seldom be used and just add on extra weight!

I got the same exact bag in Amsterdam, of all places and I traveled around the world with it…TWICE. It was pulled down the streets of Kathmandu, spent months (litterally) on trains in India. The big wheels make even the most uneven pavement manageable. Where the pavement was nonexistant, the big padded strapps and belt came in really handy. I could make changes to this bag, like using some lighter weight fabrics, but it was durable and worth the weight of the wheels and frame not to have to carry it around all the time. I could sprint through airports with it to.

Did you manage with this bag in India and remote places? I’m leaving within 2 months around the globe and I’m looking for the same bag but I’m also a bit worried about the weight of this bag to turn into a backpack. Otherwise people advised me not to take a wheeled backpack to travel in India, Nepal…

Hi Anne, I did take this bag to India but I only wheeled it. The wheels are quite heavy duty so I never actually had to turn it into backpack, plus that would also be quite heavy. But I loaded it on tuktuks, carried it onto trains, and wheeled it down some pretty uneven streets in India. I also took it to Nepal and it did just fine. It might struggle on really uneven dirt roads with loads of loose gravel, but it can handle your average dirt road.

I know you haven’t used the harness and backpack straps much but I was just wondering if they were comfortable and suitable for a small female?

I have the same bag, gray version, and I love it. I bought it 2 1/2 years ago and I have taken it to Europe for two 2 week trips and probably 40 local trips of 1 to 3 nights and it is not showing any wear and tear. I have used the straps. In Vogogna, Italy the streets were rough and I used it as a backpack for a 1/2 mile walk from the train station to the hotel. I love the bag. Very good post.

This is so helpful! I’m always torn between bringing a backpack for the ease of carrying it everywhere and bringing a suitcase because of sore shoulders. This seems like a perfect solution! I may have to buy one in the future. Thanks for sharing!

would you consider 100l osprey shuttle without the backpack option? I cant decide

I haven’t tested the 100L Osprey Shuttle, but it does look similar in design to my 80L. Just a bit bulkier but the reviews for it also look good!

I intent to go to Japan for several weeks and bought a Sojourn for that – before knowing that you also has one and that you visited Japan as well. Since I will be traveling around the country a lot, I wondered if a Luggage the size of the Sojourn will be a Problem. Did you use any Lockers at stations or airports with the Sojourn? I heard the Large-Sized Lockers are very limited, was it hard to find a fitting locker or to Squeeze the soujourn in?

Independent Travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg

My wife and I have traveled independently to many European countries and, after reading many of the comments in this forum, feel like we may be able to do so in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well, although we feel somewhat less comfortable than the other countries where we have traveled in Europe.

My biggest question is how much we will miss by visiting the main sites without a tour guide. In the other European countries we have visited on our own we have been comfortable and satisfied with the level of knowledge we have gained by studying and visiting on our own, although we believe a tour guide or tour company in any country would normally be able to provide greater insight than visiting a site on our own, but about in Moscow and St. Petersburg?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Unless you speak at least some Russian and read the alphabet it would be difficult without a guide. Very few signs in English especially in Moscow. Also not too many people speak English there.

I visited St Petersburg last Autumn for a protracted period , and did not find it anymore daunting than any other European city . As Ilja says , learning the Cyrillic alphabet is a big plus . I also found that it was fairly easy to grasp . It will , among other things , enable you to read signs with relative ease . I would answer the main part or your question ( about tour guides ) thus - I am not enamored of tour guides or tours. While I only use a tour under duress ( A sites rules prohibiting an independent visit - ie Glasgow School of Art , Municipal House in Prague , etc ) . Doing your own preparation and homework is the best way , in my opinion . My wife and I ventured through St Petersburg with nary a concern ,and made two day trips outside of the central district ( one was twenty five miles away , and no English speakers in sight ) Figuring out the logistical details , did not present any difficulties . While I never use tours , I am an inveterate eavesdropper , have done so many times , and find , that on balance , the information that they impart is fairly elementary . If you want greater detail , they are unlikely to supply it . I also prefer to go at my own pace , not being rushed and being able to dwell on things that most other visitors barely give a passing glance . If you are interested , let me know . I would be happy to provide you with information that will enable you to travel independently

Thank you, Steven. I am encouraged by your comments and feel the same way you do about tour groups. We are very much willing to prepare in advance and learn the basics of the Cyrillic alphabet to help us have a better experience.

I would be very interested in learning more about your experience in Russia and receiving any additional information you can provide on independent travel there, starting perhaps with obtaining the visa.

I am not opposed to hiring a private or small group guide for a specific site or for a day trip outside St Petersburg and Moscow, but, like you said, I much prefer the freedom of staying at places as long or short as I want and seeing the sites that interest me most. For example, neither my wife nor I are big into shopping, yet most tour itineraries leave afternoon time for just that. Not interested!

Please provide whatever you may feel would be helpful for us.

Having always traveled independently, we thought we could do a better job than any tour. How misguided (pun intended) we were. Now that we have had the experience of having someone native to the area walk us around and explain things through a personal perspective we realize how much we missed. For St. Petersburg I highly recommend http://www.peterswalk.com/tours.html . This is not a traditional guided tour, but an opportunity to receive some orientation to the area as well as insight into the "Russian soul". I think if you did this upon arrival the rest of your time would be much more meaningful. We really liked the http://www.pushka-inn.com . The location is superb (just around the corner from the Hermitage square), the rooms lovely, the included breakfast at the restaurant next door ample and overall an excellent value. We used this company to get our visa: https://www.passportvisasexpress.com/site/san_francisco_customer_service Note that it costs about the same for a 3-year visa as a one-year, and you never know if you might want to return within that more extended window of time. It is not cheap, so factor that into your planning.

If you like traveling without a guide in other countries and find this satisfying, the same will be true in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Of course it's not either/or - you can certainly take a guided walk or boat tour, for instance.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of learning Cyrillic if you're going on your own. The book I used was Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script, which was great. Russia is indeed a bit more "foreign" than say, Italy. However, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, I found enough English to be able to get by. Many restaurants had English menus and/or English speaking staff, for instance. This was most emphatically not true in Vladimir and Suzdal (two cities in the Golden Ring outside Moscow). I went with my sister, a Russian speaker, and if she hadn't been there, I would have been in big trouble. So, if you want to see places outside these two big cities, use a guided tour (even if just for that part). Also, Moscow and St. Petersburg are huge cities. Coming from New York, I wasn't intimidated, but those not used to a megacity may not be so cavalier (even I found them overwhelming at times, especially Moscow).

I found both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide to be helpful, and both to have various errors. Look at both, buy whichever one has a more recent edition, and then be prepared to have to discard some of the advice therein. Also, these places change more quickly than places in Western Europe. Be very careful of outdated advice. For instance, I was there in 2001 and 2010, so I won't give you any specifics on getting a visa - that changes constantly.

Just as a teaser, two things I saw and loved that I doubt would be included in any escorted tour are the Gorky House in Moscow (an Art Nouveau wonder) and the Sheremyetov Palace in St. Petersburg (it's now a museum of musical instruments, and the decor is amazing, particularly in the Etruscan Room).

This is about you and not about Petersburg. Do you like guided tours? We don't and didn't find that a guide added to our experience in China where we did hire private guides mostly for the logistics; it was easy to have someone drive us places. But once at a site, we didn't need the guide. I felt the same way about our 9 nights in Petersburg. We did hire a guide for the trip to the Catherine Palace again for the ease of logistics for us Olds. Having someone pick us up at the apartment and get us in without line ups and shepherd us through the palace steering clear of the tour groups was lovely. But we didn't need commentary because we can read and prepare.

You certainly don't need a guide for the Hermitage (we spent 4 days there), the Russian Museum, the Kazan Cathedral or Church on Spilled Blood or the Faberge Museum. We enjoyed a number of self guided walking tours including a couple from Rick Steves guidebooks. We took the canal cruise suggested by RS that had an English commentator. I would not take one without that as you will be totally clueless. The commentator was not all that good but at least we had some idea what we were seeing. So for people like us who like to do our own thing and can read a guidebook and don't particularly like to be led about, a tour is not needed. If you enjoy tour groups, then go for it. Petersburg is easy to negotiate. It helps if you can read the cyrillic alphabet and it is also useful to have the google translate ap on your phone. We found ourselves translating packages in grocery stores with it and the occasional museum sign or menu. I have one food I need to avoid and so it was handy to have the translator to talk with waiters (I could either show them the sentence, or play it for them or play it to myself and then repeat it to the waiter -- that all worked well)

Dear Russ, I cannot help you with Moscow, but about four years ago, my husband and I went to St Petersburg on our own. But, we did use a private guide for 4 half days. We both feel that our guide absolutely made our trip (we stayed 6 or 7 nights). We used a company owned by Tatyana Chiurikova, www.tour-stpetersburg.com I cannot say enough good things about her and our experience. I emailed her and we worked out a schedule/ sights that was tailored to our interests. She also offered some recommendations, which we took. The guide will meet you at your hotel. And frequently, at certain places, with the guide, we were able to skip the long entrance lines. We had an half day driving tour of the city (car, driver, & guide). You are taken to & go in places such as Peter & Paul Fortress, some of the cathedrals, etc. We had a half day with the guide at the Hermitage which ensured that we would see the major sights there. And, of course, you can stay after your guide leaves or return another day. Also, we had the guide for Peterhof (a must & go by boat) and Catherine's Palace. I hope that you will go to the website. As I said, our guide made our trip. I am positive that we would have missed quite a bit on our own everyday. And I'm sure we would have wasted a lot of time trying to get to various place.This was the best of both worlds, a guide where needed and plenty of time on our own. I am curious about the lines as we encountered no lines on our trip -- but it was in September. We got tickets for the Hermitage at machines and skipped those lines and our guide for the Catherine Palace which was our only guided experience (as noted before, chosen for the logistics of getting there) had arranged tickets and we didn't have a line, but then we also didn't see lines. We did not find lines at any other site.

Both Moscow and St Petersburg I've done on my own, that is together with the Dear Partner. I can't remember any problem getting where we wanted to go. The Metro systems are well signed, and with a little exercise and patience you can recognize the station names. With a good map and a good guide - we had the Rough Guides - that part of the logistics is solved. The language is a major problem, but the usual tricks of pointing, looking helpless, and making a joke of it all do wonders. I would hate to be led by a guide, but for others it is a comfortable thought.

We also did both cities on our own. I found the DK Eyewitness guide for Moscow has the best map. I used the one from our library (kept the book at home). Took the smaller RS book for St. Petersburg ( his book on northern cities). His map and restaurant ideas were all good. We also downloaded the Google maps in our Android Samsung tablets/phones for both cities and then could get directions to any place we typed in. The blue ball guided us everywhere. I'm sure we missed somethings by not having a guide, but we just enjoy walking around and getting a sense of a place. If you like art, The Hermitage is great. We went 3 times and still missed alot. In St. Peterburg we stayed at the 3 Mosta which we loved (quite and not far from the Church of Spilled Blood.) We also loved the Georgian food in both cities. There's a great Georgian restaurant near the 3 Mosta hotel. We're now in Belarus- very scenic. Enjoy your trip!!
