star trek 2009 george kirk

Now streaming on:

“Star Trek” as a concept has voyaged far beyond science fiction and into the safe waters of space opera, but that doesn’t amaze me. The Gene Roddenberry years, when stories might play with questions of science, ideals or philosophy, have been replaced by stories reduced to loud and colorful action. Like so many franchises, it’s more concerned with repeating a successful formula than going boldly where no “Star Trek” has gone before.

The 2009 “Star Trek” film goes back eagerly to where “Star Trek” began, using time travel to explain a cast of mostly the same characters, only at a younger point in their lives, sailing the Starship Enterprise. As a story idea, this is sort of brilliant and saves on invention, because young Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Scotty and the rest channel their later selves. The child is father to the man, or the Vulcan, and all that.

Don’t get me wrong. This is fun. And when Leonard Nimoy himself returns as the aged Spock, encountering another Spock ( Zachary Quinto ) as a young man, I was kind of delighted, although as is customary in many sci-fi films, nobody is as astonished as they should be. Holy moly! Time travel exists, and this may be me! It’s more like a little ambiguous dialogue is exchanged, and they’re off to battle the evil Romulan Capt. Nero ( Eric Bana ).

Time travel as we all know, is impossible in the sense it happens here, but many things are possible in this film. Anyone with the slightest notion of what a black hole is, or how it behaves, will find the black holes in “Star Trek” hilarious. The logic is also a little puzzling when Scotty can beam people into another ship in outer space, but they have to physically parachute to land on a platform in the air from which the Romulans are drilling a hole to the Earth’s core. After they land there, they fight with two Romulan guards, using ... fists and swords? The platform is suspended from Arthur C. Clark’s “space elevator,” but instead of fullerenes, the cable is made of metallic chunks the size of refrigerators.

But stop me before I get started. I mention these details only to demonstrate that the movie raises its yo-yo finger to the science, while embracing the fiction. Apart from details from the youths of the characters and the Spock reunion, it consists mostly of encounters between the Enterprise and the incomparably larger and much better armed Romulan spaceship from the future. It’s encouraging to learn that not even explosions and fires can quickly damage a starship. Also that lifeboats can save the crew, despite the vast distance from home base.

That would be because of warp speed, which for present purposes consists of looking through an unnecessary window at bright lights zapping past. This method of transportation prevents any sense of wonder at the immensity of outer space and is a convenience not only for the starship but also for the screenwriters, who can push a button and zap to the next scene. The concept of using warp speed to escape the clutches of a black hole seems like a recycling of the ancient dilemma of the rock and the hard place.

But there are affecting character moments. Young Spock is deliberately taunted in hopes he will, as a Vulcan, betray emotion. Because Zachary Quinto plays him as a bit of a self-righteous prig, it’s satisfying to see him lose it. Does poor young Spock realize he faces a lifetime of people trying to get a rise out of him? Nimoy, as the elderly Spock, must have benefitted, because he is the most human character in the film.

Chris Pine , as James Tiberius Kirk, appears first as a hot-rodding rebel who has found a Corvette in the 23rd century and drives it into the Grand Canyon. A few years after he’s put on suspension by the Academy and smuggled on board the Enterprise by Bones McCoy ( Karl Urban ), he becomes the ship’s captain. There are times when the command deck looks like Bring Your Child to School Day, with the kid sitting in daddy’s chair.

Uhura ( Zoe Saldana ) seems to have traveled through time to the pre-feminist 1960s, where she found her miniskirt and go-go boots. She seems wise and gentle and unsuited to her costume. Scotty ( Simon Pegg ) seems to have begun life as a character in a Scots sitcom. Eric Bana’s Nero destroys whole planets on the basis of faulty intelligence, but the character is played straight and is effective.

The special effects are slam-bam. Spatial relationships between spaceships are unclear because the Romulan ship and the Enterprise have such widely unmatched scales. Battles consist primarily of jump-suited crew members running down corridors in advance of smoke, sparks and flames. Lots of verbal commands seem implausibly slow. Consider, at light warp speeds, how imprecise it would be to say “At my command ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...” Between “2” and “1,” you could jump a million galaxies.

I thought about these things during “Star Trek” because I could not help myself. I understand the Star Trek science has never been intended as plausible. I understand this is not science fiction but an Ark movie using a starship. I understand that the character types are as familiar as your favorite slippers. But the franchise has become much of a muchness. The new movie essentially intends to reboot the franchise with younger characters and carry on as before. The movie deals with narrative housekeeping. Perhaps the next one will engage these characters in a more challenging and devious story, one more about testing their personalities than re-establishing them. In the meantime, you want space opera, you got it.

The Problem and the Solution: Why Palpatine from Star Wars is One of the Great Movie Villains

Strange New Worlds Just Borrowed A Key Plot Point From J.J. Abrams' Star Trek And Made It Official Canon

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Kirks

In the latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," called "Lost in Translation," a young James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) has just been promoted to the position of First Officer on board the U.S.S. Farragut. His brother Samuel (Dan Jeannotte) serves on the U.S.S. Enterprise as an anthropologist. In the canon of "Star Trek," James Kirk did indeed serve as First Officer on the Farragut, although Samuel's fate — as detailed in the episode "Operation — Annihilate!" (April 13, 1967) is far less rosy; he and his family will die at the hands (?) of flying pancake-looking critters that invade his planet-bound colony.

The Kirks' father is rarely mentioned in "Star Trek." The most explicit reference to the Kirk patriarch — prior to 2009 — came in a production memo regarding the episode "The Conscience of the King" (December 8, 1966) wherein Kirk (William Shatner) didn't merely witness an infamous massacre at the hands of Kodos the Executioner, but that his dad was murdered as well. This idea was abandoned, and the identity of Kirk's father wasn't made known.

The first time any on-screen mention of Kirk's father came about was in 2009 with the release of J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek." At the start of that film, George Kirk ( Chris Hemsworth ) was serving onboard a ship called the U.S.S. Kelvin when it was damaged by a Romulan vessel flying in through a portal from the future. George Kirk's son James was born in the middle of the conflagration, and George had just enough time to hear his infant son cry over a communication channel before he crashed the Kelvin into the enemy vessel and died. George Kirk's ship gave the alternate Abrams "Star Trek" timeline its commonly accepted name.

With "Lost in Translation," an element from the Kelvinverse has now become central "Trek" canon.

Reclaiming canon

"Lost in Translation" sees James Kirk's first visit to the Enterprise. The episode features the Kirk brothers bickering — Sam resents that Jim is so darned ambitious — and Jim meets Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Spock (Ethan Peck) for the first time. Sam and Jim talk a little bit about how Jim's ambitions are a direct result of their Starfleet father, George Samuel Kirk, who once served on board a ship called the Kelvin.

And with that passing, almost thrown-off line of dialogue, George Kirk has been placed firmly into "Star Trek" canon as having served on board the U.S.S. Kelvin. One might see the reference as a cheeky need for the central "Trek" timeline to reclaim the Kelvinverse for itself. Note, though, that the Abrams "Star Trek" timeline didn't diverge from the traditional "Trek" canon until the Kelvin was destroyed, so George Kirk's career on board would be canonical either way. It's just that in one timeline he survived, and in another, he died. In the original timeline, Kirk's mother Wynona made it back to Earth and gave birth to James in Iowa. Here, Kirk was born in space.

Of course, Kirk's father has multiple histories, depending on which "Star Trek" novel you decide to pay attention to. Plenty of non-canonical sources have traced careers and personalities around George Kirk. According to the 2015 sourcebook "The Autobiography of James T. Kirk" (the Kelvinverse version of the character), Kirk's father served on board a ship called the U.S.S. Los Angeles before serving on the U.S.S. Kelvin. An early California-class vessel perhaps? Like the ones seen in "Star Trek: Lower Decks" ?

Other George Kirk histories

It has generally been accepted that Kirk's father was named George Samuel, although the details of his life have been changed multiple times over the franchise's long and varied expanded-universe history. In Diane Carey's 1999 novel "Best Destiny,"  a teenage James Kirk has an adventure on the Enterprise with his dad and the ship's captain, Robert April. In that continuity, George Kirk was a Starfleet officer who was frequently away from home. In Joe Haldeman's 1979 novel "World Without End," however, George Kirk was not a Starfleet officer at all, but the mayor of a small Iowa city. In that timeline, George Kirk was an advocate for a return to agrarian life wherein people were to work their own land (and presumably be given the resources to care for farmland).

In the 1989 novel "Final Frontier," also by Carey, it was further posited that George Kirk and Robert April were close friends, and that April asked George to serve on board a brand new experimental starship. In that continuity, George Kirk was the one who suggested it be called the U.S.S. Enterprise. Fatalism! Whee!

William Shatner wrote several "Star Trek" novels himself, detailing a miniature sub-continuity in itself, called the Shatnerverse. In 1997's "The Return,"  George Kirk was described like a company man, always on business trips, but eager to take his sons to museums and theme parks when he was home. The small Kirk recalls looking at the stars with his father, and credited him for wanting to join Starfleet. In Shatner's version of things, there was no familial tragedy or resentment about Kirk's father.

With "Lost in Translation," though, all other continuities may be cleanly wiped from the map. The U.S.S. Kelvin is real , and George was an officer. Other "official" details will now have to be filled in by the current crop of writers.

Chris Hemsworth's Blunt Reason For Turning Down Star Trek 4

Star Trek Chris Hemsworth

J.J. Abrams ' Star Trek came out 10 years ago this spring. It was not only a huge hit, spawning two sequels, it introduced Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk, father of Chris Pine's James T. Kirk. George was killed on his ship at the start of the movie, so that was the last we saw of him. Fast-forward to today, and Star Trek 4 was supposed to bring back both Chrises as both Kirks. That didn't happen, and the movie is now reportedly shelved .

The rumored reason for both Chrises dropping out was money, with both high profile superhero stars reportedly wanting more than what Paramount was willing to pay after the relative disappointment of Star Trek Beyond .

However, if you ask Chris Hemsworth , he turned down the next Star Trek sequel because he wasn't into the script and he's gotten more selective over time:

I didn’t feel like we landed on a reason to revisit that yet. I didn’t want to be underwhelmed by what I was going to bring to the table.

So Chris Hemsworth told Variety the fault was with the story/script/his role, not the budget. Maybe he didn't want to bring up money -- considering Forbes said he made $64.5 million last year. But he could've been honest about that and people would've understood his worth has gone way up since Star Trek . It's very possible the contract issues that made headlines weren't the full story and this note about the script is at the heart of things.

Back in 2016, Paramount officially announced Chris Hemsworth's return as George Kirk, saying the fourth movie in that franchise would be written by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Here's what the studio said the movie would be about:

In the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father. Chris Hemsworth, who appeared in 2009’s Star Trek, will return to the space saga as George Kirk to star alongside Pine.

On paper, I loved that idea. It's a way to get father and son together on screen, and also pair up two charismatic Chrises. But apparently something went wrong in the screenwriting phase, and/or Paramount wasn't willing to pay up after the under-performance of the third movie at the box office.

It's possible Chris Hemsworth was saying that if the story were stronger, he would've done Star Trek 4 for less money. Obviously he doesn't need the money. But if the script didn't impress him much and he was getting less than his usual amount? I can see him walking out. That's just speculation, but it would be a way to combine both the money reason -- which never came from either actor -- and the script reason coming from Hemsworth himself.

The one where... we go back to the beginning ... with Lens Flare — Lots. And Lots . Of Lens Flare.

Star Trek is the eleventh movie in the Star Trek film series, released in 2009.

The Film of the Series and partial Continuity Reboot from Lost creator J. J. Abrams , featuring the characters from Star Trek: The Original Series played by a new cast, and set in an Alternate Timeline during the time period of The Original Series . Alternatively called J.J. Abrams' Star Trek , Star Trek 2009/'09 , Star Trek: The Future Begins (even though that "subtitle" is actually the tagline ), and Star Trek XI/11 to keep confusion in check with the other Trek films.

In 2233, The Federation starship Kelvin comes across a "black hole"-like spatial phenomenon near a distant sun. Emerging from it is a massive ship called the Narada captained by a Romulan named Nero ( Eric Bana ). Nero kills the Kelvin 's captain, and deploying weaponry vastly superior to that of the Federation ship, the Narada forces the Kelvin crew to abandon ship, with many crewmembers lost. While the survivors flee the devastating battle, a young boy is born amongst them: James Tiberius Kirk , son of the first officer of the Kelvin ( Chris Hemsworth ), who sacrifices himself and the ship to buy time for his crew's escape. This incident ultimately sets a new series of events in motion; one of them being James T. Kirk ( Chris Pine ) growing up an angry, rebellious young adult until he is recruited by Captain Christopher Pike ( Bruce Greenwood ) to join Starfleet.

As Kirk makes waves at Starfleet Academy, the Narada and Nero emerge again after years in hiding. The Federation scrambles its fleet to confront the warship, deploying the flagship Enterprise , commanded by Pike, for the first time. All the rest of the fleet is destroyed, with the Enterprise only surviving due to a brief delay in getting to the battlefield. When the Enterprise engages the Narada , Pike is taken hostage. When they learn the Narada is from the distant future and begin to put together the events that lead to that future, it falls on Kirk and Spock ( Zachary Quinto ) to overcome their initial mistrust of each other and on the ship's green, hastily put-together crew of cadets note  actually, concerning those with major roles, it's three cadets (one of whom is a lieutenant, and another of whom is already a qualified doctor), an ensign, a lieutenant, a lieutenant commander who was Reassigned to Antarctica , and a commander who was told You Are in Command Now —( the young TOS characters )—to somehow save the day.

The film also stars Karl Urban as Leonard McCoy , Zoe Saldaña as Nyota Uhura, Simon Pegg as Montgomery Scott, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov, Ben Cross as Sarek, Winona Ryder as Amanda Grayson and Leonard Nimoy as Spock Prime.

The first theatrical Star Trek film to feature any of the original characters in 15 years . Released seven years after 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis (the biggest gap between films to date) from which it takes a major Tone Shift and, believe it or not, to which it is also a loose Stealth Sequel .

Star Trek is the first entry in what has been officially dubbed the "Kelvin Timeline" that continues with the 2013 sequel Star Trek Into Darkness and the 2016 sequel Star Trek Beyond .

Chris Hemsworth Will Return as George Kirk in Star Trek 4

Chris Hemsworth is set to return as George Kirk, who will cross paths with his son, Chris Pine's James Tiberius Kirk in Star Trek 4.

Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Bad Robot today announced that the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will return to the big screen for another voyage in Star Trek 4 . In the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine 's Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father. Chris Hemsworth , who appeared in 2009's Star Trek , will return to the space saga as George Kirk to star alongside Pine.

The remaining cast, including Zachary Quinto , Zoe Saldana , Simon Pegg , John Cho and Karl Urban m is expected to return. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay for this new Star Trek sequel. J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance will executive produce.

Star Trek , the first film in Paramount 's rebooted franchise based on Star Trek , created by Gene Roddenberry , earned more than $380 million worldwide in 2009. The second installment, Star Trek Into Darkness earned more than $460 million worldwide when it opened in May 2013. The series' third film, Star Trek Beyond , is directed by Justin Lin ( Fast & Furious franchise) and opens in theaters on July 22, 2016.

Hemsworth is currently starring in Ghostbusters alongside Melissa McCarthy , Kristin Wiig and Kate McKinnon , and filming Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 back to back. He is repped by CAA and ROAR. Paramount hasn't confirmed if director Justin Lin will return to the helm for Star Trek 4 , but hopefuly we'll have some more updates soon, including a possible release date.

The 2009 Star Trek movie actually marked the feature film debut of Chris Hemsworth , who had previously been best known for playing Kim Hyde on the Australian TV series Home and Away . Since his character George Kirk died in the opening moments of Star Trek , we don't know for sure how Captain Kirk will reunite with his father, but hopefully we'll have more details soon. It also isn't known how Anton Yelchin's death will be handled in future sequels, if Pavel Chekov will be written out of te franchise, or if another actor will be recast.

Top Crew Moments that Defined the Kelvin Timeline

Revisit the Kelvin Timeline for the 15th anniversary of 'Star Trek.'

Collage of Kelvin Timeline characters (Chekov, Uhura, McCoy, Kirk, Jaylah, Scotty, Sulu, and Spock)

StarTrek.com

15 years ago, Star Trek (2009) created an alternate reality universe known as the Kelvin Timeline. In the parallel world of this film, and its sequels Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond , a retaliatory attack by a Romulan miner named Nero sets off a chain of events that forever alters the destiny of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.

In this timeline, James Kirk loses his father, George, and is a reluctant recruit to Starfleet Academy in 2255. The half-human Spock witnesses the destruction of his home planet Vulcan; Uhura, a xenolinguistics expert, is in her early days as a cadet; and engineer Montgomery Scott is an accidental addition to the crew. While the alterations in the Kelvin-verse range from minute to major, all have an impact on the time continuum that sets everyone down a familiar yet different path from their TOS counterparts.

In honor of the 15th anniversary of Star Trek , we’ve rounded up some of the key crew moments that define the Kelvin Timeline. While fan reception varies across all three films, they do expand the lives of the TOS crew from their maiden voyage, their first five-year mission, to their fall, and reunion at Yorktown.

Captain George Samuel Kirk: Sacrifice of the U.S.S. Kelvin

George Kirk sitting at the helm of the U.S.S. Kelvin mere moments before its sacrificial collision course with the Narada as he hears his son's cries for the first time in Star Trek (2009)

Star Trek (2009)

The Kelvin Timeline starts with the death of George Kirk, since the alternate reality established in Star Trek is built on Kirk's sacrifice aboard the U.S.S. Kelvin .

Following an attack by Captain Nero, a 24th Century Romulan bent on revenge for the loss of his home world, George Kirk becomes acting command for Captain Richard Robau. With a passenger load of 800-plus on his shoulders, Kirk leads decisively to evacuate the Kelvin and destroy Nero's mining vessel Narada . His final moments are spent securing the life of his pregnant wife and child, just moments from birth. Captain George Kirk went down with the Kelvin , but not before naming his son. And not before saving the lives of nearly all its crewmembers in a legendary maneuver that involved manually piloting his ship into the Narada to give survivors more time. While his son, James, grew up without a father, George's influence was never out of reach. His DNA for steeliness was a blueprint, dad to son.

As Christopher Pike told James when recruiting him to Starfleet, George Kirk "didn’t believe in no-win scenarios."

Captain James T. Kirk: Going Down with the Enterprise

Kirk looks ahead at the viewscreen realizing the Enterprise is going down for real this time in Star Trek Beyond

Star Trek Beyond

Yes, the captain's sacrifice to the warp core in Into Darkness could top the best of Kirk in the Kelvin Timeline. But even more real is the loss of the Enterprise in Star Trek Beyond .

Halfway through its first five-year mission, the ship's saucer section is destroyed by Krall, a former Federation officer who is now the mutated leader of the Swarm. Krall's advanced tech takeover is an eerie callback to the loss of the Kelvin and George Kirk in Star Trek 's opening moments. Jim Kirk confronts the exact decisions his father faced in his final moments, and he faces the inevitable destruction of the Enterprise with the same head-on decisiveness. The crew comes first, always. That principle is also exemplified in Kirk's impassioned plea to Admiral Marcus in Into Darkness when the ship is threatened with extinction. No one else is responsible for Kirk's orders, and he's always made that clear.

Spock: (Alternate) Future Planning for the Past

Breaking temporal rules, Prime Spock meets with Kelvin Spock beside a shuttle in Star Trek (2009)

Spock's best moments in the Kelvin Timeline are the conversations he has with himself. He is an (alternate) future planner, and Ambassador Spock is the Prime messenger. There are two "hinge" events that have caused this parallel, divergent timeline — the destruction of Romulus around 2387, and the destruction of the U.S.S. Kelvin in 2233.

Prime Spock sets up his younger, alternate reality self with critical information, but nothing can stop the death of Vulcan and its billions of inhabitants. Ambassador Spock also convinces Kirk, while marooned on Delta Vega, to elicit a strong emotional response from his younger self so that Captain Spock "realizes" he is unfit for command. The Ambassador knows that the survival of the Enterprise relies on Kirk in the captain's chair, with Spock's measured logic guiding the captain with computer-like precision.

In Into Darkness , Ambassador Spock also warns the Commander of what's ahead. Because of the Ambassador's uncharacteristically strong response, Spock understands the full threat of Khan. He warns Kirk, repeatedly, that Khan is not to be trusted, even as a temporary ally. If only Kirk took the note.

Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu: First Enterprise Mission

Close-up of Hikaru Sulu in the center seat of the Enterprise at the helm of his first command mission in Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness

Lieutenant Sulu stands out on his first Enterprise mission. As the responders to the Vulcan distress signal in Star Trek , Sulu and a crew of fresh-faced cadets mobilize under Pike's command. While first day jitters cause Sulu to forget to disengage the Enterprise 's equivalent of a parking brake, we'll cut him some slack. Three minutes into his maiden voyage, Sulu pilots the Enterprise straight into Nero's trap, and is forced to pull off an evasive maneuver in a space field littered with what's left of a Federation Starfleet. And he can't go to warp.

Sulu's first "away mission," if parachuting into the Vulcan atmosphere to board and overpower the Narada qualifies, is also memorable. We learn just how much hand-to-hand combat he's working with when Sulu saves Kirk from two Vulcans with expert fencing skill. A sophisticated addition to a Starfleet resume and, in Sulu's case, the saving grace for one of the rockiest first flights in Star Trek history. Don’t test Sulu. If you do, "you will fail."

Lieutenant Nyota Uhura: Taking Down Khan

On the roof of a moving train, Uhura fires her phaser at Khan as he brawled with Spock in Star Trek Into Darkness

Lieutenant Uhura delivers the final blow to Khan in Into Darkness . When Bones discovers that Khan's blood is needed to save an irradiated Kirk, the Lieutenant beams down with seconds to spare to relieve Spock from a losing battle. Uhura's fight with Khan is also a resolution to her turmoil at the start of Into Darkness .

Following Spock’s near-sacrifice on Class M planet Nibiru, Uhura struggled to understand how the person she loved could end it all so easily. While fighting Khan, Uhura is the one who is prepared to die, demonstrating just how deep her bond with Spock runs.

Montgomery Scott, Chief Engineer: Standing on Principle

Montgomery Scott and Mr. Keenser surprised by the arrival of Prime Spock and Kirk as they've been exiled on Delta Vega for several months in Star Trek (2009)

Montgomery "Scotty" Scott gets a lot of play in the Kelvin Timeline as the inventor of transwarp beaming and as the Enterprise 's Chief Engineer. Kirk and Ambassador Spock first encounter Scotty in the Federation outpost on Delta Vega. His assignment is bleak, cold, and lonely, so he's only too happy to beam aboard the Enterprise while it's mid-warp even at risk of death. (Good thing too, 'cause he almost dies.)

To Scotty, the Enterprise represents limitless engineering possibilities. He is a veteran man of science, equally fascinated by the dated technology of the U.S.S. Franklin in Beyond . There is no challenge that Scotty doesn't match with grit. The rare exception is when he says "no" to Kirk in Into Darkness for all the right reasons. Scotty refused to support Starfleet's military operation against "John Harrison," telling Kirk that he considered himself an explorer. A man with a mission and a conscience.

Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy: Saving Jim Kirk's Life

In Sickbay, a distressed Leonard McCoy looks up close-up at a Tribble in front of him in Star Trek Into Darkness

Bones gets two "Best in Crew" moments as the Enterprise 's Chief Medical Officer. The first — inoculating and dragging Jim Kirk aboard the Enterprise in Star Trek . The second — saving Kirk's life in Into Darkness .

In order to cripple the U.S.S. Vengeance that was overtaken by Khan, James Kirk needed to stabilize the Enterprise by reactivating the ship's engines and weapons. So, he enters the warp core, sans containment suit, flooding himself with a deadly dose of radiation. The Enterprise is now down a captain, but at least it's no longer hurtling towards a fiery reentry on Earth. Enter Bones with a bit of Tribble inspiration.

After the successful capture of Khan on Qo'noS, Kirk requested that Bones test the blood of the madman to unlock the secrets of his superhuman healing and strength. Bones delivered, injecting a sample of Khan's blood into a Tribble. When Bones notices that Khan's super-blood reanimates that same Tribble from death, Kirk is taken off the cryotube, Khan is beamed back to the Enterprise , and an 11th hour blood transfusion brings Kirk back from the land of death.

Ensign Pavel Chekov: Manual Override Award

Ensign Chekov leans over the railing to pull Kirk up as the Enterprise is in freefall in Star Trek Into Darkness

Ensign Pavel Chekov deserves a pip for dealing with multiple, catastrophic tech failures in the span of Into Darkness . When Chief Engineer Mr. Scott fails to persuade Kirk to disarm the Enterprise 's torpedoes, or else , the ship experiences a warp core coolant leak that removes their ability to evade Khan or counterattack. And, since Scotty handed in his resignation to avoid this preventable disaster, Chekov patches up the pieces. Throughout Into Darkness , the MVP Ensign scurries, dodges, and races against the ticking bomb of Khan to get the Enterprise back in semi-decent shape.

In the film's final showdown, the Enterprise and the U.S.S. Vengeance are both inoperable. They are trapped in Earth's gravitational field above San Francisco, plummeting towards certain death. Enter Chekov with his "right time, right place" talent. Making one of the most impressive plays in the Kelvin-verse, Chekov catches Kirk and Scotty from freefall in their race to get the warp core online.

Jaylah: A Warrior Survives Altamid

Jaylah sits sprawled in the captain's chair with her leg over the arm in Star Trek Beyond

startrek.com

Star Trek Beyond is a survivor movie, and Jaylah is the ultimate survivor.

A crewmember that started as an ally, Jaylah is a member of an unknown humanoid species. She becomes a friend to Starfleet by sharing a common enemy in Krall, who also destroyed her people. For a handful of years, she was marooned on the planet Altamid, surviving and building a home out of a 2160s Federation starship. Jaylah's mastery over the legendarily lost U.S.S. Franklin makes her a best in (honorary) crew. By engineering defunct, century-old alien tech, she uncovers the secrets of an ancient vessel. Jaylah survives by camouflaging the ship with holograms, alarming it with traps, and listening to music on VHF.

At a celebration for the christening at Enterprise-A, the crew all gazed up in wonder in Star Trek Beyond

By the end of Beyond , the reconstruction of Enterprise -A is already underway. The captain has refused an appointment to Vice Admiral so he can still fly, and Ambassador Spock is dead, leaving Commander Spock on a singular timeline journey. Uhura recommits to Starfleet, Jaylah gets a bid to join the Academy, and Bones all but says that he'll go wherever Kirk goes. As for the rest of the crew? The five-year mission remains uncharted, but all have their eyes on Enterprise -A.

George Takei Had A Casting Idea Of His Own For Sulu In J.J. Abrams' Star Trek

D irector J.J. Abrams' philosophy toward making his 2009 reboot of "Star Trek" likely involved a lot of uses of the words "high octane" and "kicked into overdrive." The characters in Abrams' "Star Trek" resemble the ones we all remember from the 1966 TV series, but electrified for a modern, action-hungry audience. Kirk (Chris Pine) is not just a captain who rules by instinct and occasionally snogs alien women (as William Shatner did), but a rash, skirt-chasing, destructive young punk who gets into bar brawls. Spock (Zachary Quinto) is not merely a logical scientist who, under rare circumstances, lets his human emotions slip through his stony visage (as Leonard Nimoy was), but a perpetually annoyed pill who, more regularly, is given to flights of rage and/or romance.

In the case of Sulu (John Cho), he is not merely a capable pilot with unusual hobbies, a great sense of humor, and a weaponized side-eye (like George Takei), but a master swordsman and affable action hero with a streak of commanding sternness. John Cho was something of an unusual choice to play a "young" Sulu, as Cho was about 37 during the filming of Abrams' film while Takei made the original "Star Trek" when he was 29.

In 2007, IGN interviewed Takei about the new "Star Trek,"  back when the new film was still in the early stages of its production. Audiences and journalists already knew that the new film was to feature younger versions of the classic "Star Trek" characters, and there was, at the time, a lot of speculation as to who should play which role. Back then, Takei had a very clear idea as to who he wanted to play a young Sulu: John Lim, one of the stars of "Star Trek: New Voyages."

Takei Wanted John Lim For Young Sulu

Those unfamiliar with "Star Trek: New Voyages" have a very interesting road of discovery ahead. In January of 2004, enterprising Trekkies James Cawley and Jack Marshall decided to make a high-quality, full-length, wholly unauthorized continuation of the original "Star Trek" using the same characters and starring themselves. Cawley, through his connection to various "Star Trek" collectors, was able to assemble the few surviving pieces of the original "Star Trek" set (which was dismantled in 1969) and recreate the most accurate version of the U.S.S. Enterprise in existence; one can still tour Cawley's reconstructed set to this day .

Cawley played Captain Kirk in "New Voyages," a series that ran 10 episodes from 2004 to 2016. Many in the "Star Trek" community were impressed with the production values and quality of the show's pilot, "Come What May," and it wasn't long before Jack Marshall left the fan project to work on the new "Battlestar Galactica."

Meanwhile, several "Star Trek" veterans were moved by Cawley's gumption and decided to help. "Star Trek" writers D.C. Fontana, David Gerrold, and Marc Scott Zicree wrote episodes of "New Voyages," while "Star Trek" actors like Walter Koenig, Grace Lee Whitney, and Denise Crosby appeared periodically.

Takei played the "older" Sulu in the episode "World Enough and Time." While filming, he met John Lim, the fan actor -- formerly a lawyer -- who played the younger Sulu. Lim, Takei thought, would do nicely in Abrams' film:

"I saw the man who plays me, as Sulu, as a young man, and he's a wonderful actor, a powerful actor. There's one scene where he breaks down in anguish and it's very moving. John Lim is his name, and despite his success as an attorney, after having done this he wants to be an actor."

Lim is quite good.

Paramount Gave Star Trek: New Voyages The Thumbs-Up

How could "New Voyages" possibly be legal? Takei explained the background and the loopholes of "New Voyages," as well as the pained state of "Star Trek"-lessness that Trekkies experienced in the mid-2000s:

"I did 'Star Trek: New Voyages.' That was made up of a number of 'Star Trek' fans, all of who had become very successful in their respective careers. Look at Paul Allen, the Microsoft billionaire, he's a 'Star Trek' fan. [...]. And when the last 'Star Trek' spin-off, 'Star Trek: Enterprise' went off the air, they were going cold turkey. But they have the resources, the savvy and the connections to do something about it. So they organized, and they organized globally with the Internet [...]."

It seems that Paramount was very kind to the makers of "New Voyages," understanding the importance of Trekkies to the franchise; after all, few other fan groups devote as much time, energy, and money to the object of their worship. Paramount gave an unlicensed thumbs-up:

"They got together, negotiated with Paramount, who said they could make their own series with the understanding that they will not make any money off of it. They said that's all right, because this is a labor of love, it's their passion and they want to do it.The interesting thing is, the actor who plays Dr. McCoy is a real doctor. The man who plays Captain Kirk is a very successful Elvis impersonator. And the guy who plays Sulu is a hotshot Washington, D.C. attorney. All very successful, and ' Star Trek' fans."

Takei added that Lim was pondering leaving his law practice to become an actor in Hollywood. So far, however, he's only played an uncredited role on "The Wire."

Three new episodes of "New Voyages" are still in the works.

Chris Pine was taken by surprise when news hit that Steve Yockey, creator of the Max series “The Flight Attendant,” had signed on to write the script for “ Star Trek 4.” Why? “I thought there was already a script,” the actor recently told Business Insider during an interview on his “Poolman” press tour.

Popular on Variety

“I honestly don’t know,” Pine told Business Insider when asked about “Star Trek 4” updates. “There was something in the news of a new writer coming on board. I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong, or they decided to pivot. As it’s always been with ‘Trek,’ I just wait and see.”

Steve Yockey is the latest screenwriter to get a chance to pen the script for “Star Trek 4.” Attempts over the years to get the sequel off the ground have included an R-rated idea from none other then Quentin Tarantino. Another version of the project was to be directed by Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) and written by Lindsey Beer (“Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”). Shakman left the project to direct Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four” instead, and it fell apart soon afterwards.

In his Business Insider interview , Pine also said that it wasn’t until the third movie that he finally felt comfortable on set playing Kirk. The character was made famous by William Shatner.

“It’s interesting. Karl Urban decided to go head first into McCoy because Karl loved ‘Star Trek,'” Pine said. “With Spock, you have to do Spock-like things, plus Zach [Quinto] kind of looked like Leonard [Nimoy]. And then Kirk is a tricky one. You are the lead of the band of characters, so you don’t want to occupy too much space. It’s fine if they are doing a thing, but you don’t want to. And J.J. [Abrams] never asked me to do a thing, though I did do little nods to Shatner because it was fun.”

“But I would say I felt most in his shoes in the third movie. By that point, I think I mellowed into it and didn’t feel like I was trying too hard,” Pine added.

Background information [ ].

In the 2009 film Star Trek , Winona Kirk, specifically the alternate reality version of the character, was portrayed by Jennifer Morrison . This footage of Winona Kirk was set immediately after the split in the timeline , allowing an insight into what the prime- universe version of the character was like, as Winona Kirk has never appeared in canon aside from that.

In the script for the ultimately never-produced film Star Trek: The First Adventure (dated 1 August 1989 ), Kirk's mother was named "Joan". The name "Winona" became canon with its inclusion in the aforementioned 2009 film.

In the script of Star Trek , Winona Kirk was referred to as a twenty-five-year-old as of 2233, suggesting she was born in 2208 or 2207 . [1]

Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci revealed Winona, at least as they thought of her, was a Starfleet officer, hence her presence aboard the Kelvin . [2] She was described as a Starfleet officer in the Star Trek Encyclopedia  (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 424).

She may have a brother, since James T. Kirk said he was staying at his uncle 's farm in Star Trek Generations . It was never made clear which of his parents had a sibling, though, or if he was just using the term for a long-time family friend. In Star Trek , an uncle Frank was cut from the script and reworked into Winona's new husband heard in the film.

She may also have been the grandmother that Peter Kirk could have lived with, had he so chosen, after his events on Deneva . This individual was mentioned in a deleted scene from TOS : " Operation -- Annihilate! ". [3]

Apocrypha [ ]

Information from several of the novels and short-stories states that this character was born in 2210 and was of Sioux descent. The 1982 reference book Star Trek II: Biographies gave her name as "Marjorie Wimpole". The name "Winona" originated in Vonda N. McIntyre 's 1986 TOS novel Enterprise: The First Adventure .

In the TOS novel The Janus Gate : Past Prologue , Winona accompanied George when he was assigned to the planet Grex in 2247 . They left the planet when a civil war broke out, one year later , and moved back to their farm in Riverside .

In the novels Enterprise: The First Adventure and Final Frontier , Winona left Earth in 2259 , after the death of her husband, to stay with her eldest son in Deneva. She was present during the change of command ceremony when Christopher Pike passed command of the USS Enterprise to her son James T. Kirk in 2264 .

According to the novel Time for Yesterday , she died in a fire on the family farm in Riverside, Iowa , on June 2, 2283 . She was cremated, and her ashes were placed in a crypt in a chapel at her hometown of Riverside.

Star Trek: The Mirror Universe's History Explained

After 31 years, star trek confirms a deep space 9 in-joke in the most hilarious way, young sheldon brings back a character after 3-year absence in season 7 episode 12 clip.

  • Kirk's influence in the Mirror Universe led to the downfall of the Terran Empire, creating a harsh dystopia.
  • DS9 explored the aftermath of Mirror Spock's failed attempt to reform the Terran Empire based on Kirk's suggestions.
  • Michael Piller's curiosity and the impact of Kirk's character drove the return of the Mirror Universe in DS9.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine revealed the prime timeline Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) broke the Mirror Universe during his one and only visit. At the end of Star Trek: The Original Series season 2, episode 10, "Mirror, Mirror," Kirk suggests to Mirror Universe Spock (Leonard Nimoy) that the future of the Terran Empire could be more peaceful, like the Federation in Star Trek 's prime timeline . Star Trek didn't return to the Mirror Universe for another 27 years, in DS9 season 2, episode 23, "Crossover", which aired in 1994, and revealed a number of details about how Kirk impacted the Terran Empire .

Having rejected multiple Mirror Universe storylines for Star Trek: The Next Generation , producer Michael Piller eventually gave into his curiosity in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . Various Star Trek: DS9 characters crossed over into the Mirror Universe between seasons 2 and 7, beginning with "Crossover". DS9 's first Mirror Universe episode established what happened after Mirror Spock attempted to implement the changes suggested by Prime Kirk. Spock's attempts to reform the Terran Empire were a disaster, and created an even harsher dystopia than before .

The Mirror Universe is one of Star Trek's best concepts. Here's the Mirror Universe's chronological history from Enterprise, TOS, DS9, and Discovery.

DS9’s Mirror Universe Episode Revealed Captain Kirk Broke The Alternate Timeline

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2, episode 23, "Crossover", Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) are transported to the Mirror Universe following an accident in the Bajoran wormhole . In the 24th century Mirror Universe, there is no Deep Space Nine, but there's a Terok Nor, which is overseen by the Intendant, the Mirror version of Kira. As with its prime universe counterpart, the Cardassian space station Terok Nor is an ore processing plant populated with Terran slaves.

Future Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Mirror Universe episodes featured an adapted transporter that could cross between universes.

It's revealed that Kirk had a " profound influence " on Mirror Spock, who rose to commander in chief of the Terran Empire with promises of more peaceful reform. This substantially weakened the Terran Empire so that it was unable to defend itself against the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance. The Terran Empire fell, and the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance became the dominant force, meaning that Kirk ultimately seeded the downfall of the Mirror Universe. Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors" revealed that Mirror Spock was executed for introducing his Kirk-influenced reforms , presumably when it was realized the Terrans could not defend themselves against the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance.

Why DS9 Brought Back Star Trek’s Mirror Universe

Star Trek: TNG didn't do the Mirror Universe , largely because its pulpy idea wasn't in-keeping with TNG 's more serious tone. In the book Captains' Logs Supplemental - The Unauthorized Guide to the New Trek Voyages by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman, Michael Piller revealed his thinking behind bringing back the Mirror Universe in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and it was all because of Captain Kirk:

I couldn't get away from the fact that it would be interesting to know what happened after "Mirror, Mirror" finished. I couldn't escape the idea that Kirk's influence in the world that he left might have been profound and changed history. What would be more of a gross violation of the Prime Directive?

Robert Hewitt Wolfe, who contributed the idea of the fall of the Terran Empire told the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion that he wanted to explore why the Terrans were so brutal in Star Trek: The Original Series. Hewitt Wolfe's belief was that the Terrans had made themselves harsh and brutal to protect against the " barbarians at the gate "; the Klingons and Cardassians . Star Trek: Enterprise would later dismiss this idea, by revealing that the Terrans were cruel and brutal long before First Contact with the Vulcans. However, without Star Trek: Deep Space Nine revitalizing the concept, it's possible that Enterprise 's Mirror Universe two-parter may never have happened.

All episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The Original Series are available to stream on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, also known as DS9, is the fourth series in the long-running Sci-Fi franchise, Star Trek. DS9 was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller, and stars Avery Brooks, René Auberjonois, Terry Farrell, and Cirroc Lofton. This particular series follows a group of individuals in a space station near a planet called Bajor.

Crowdfunded ‘Space Command: Redemption’ Released, Features Star Trek’s Doug Jones, Robert Picardo & More

A dozen years after its first crowdfunding campaign , the first installment of Marc Scott Zicree’s Space Command has been released, with several Star Trek actors in the cast. “Space Command: Redemption” is out now on Tubi, VOD, and physical media, with more installments from the series in the works.

Space Command finally arrives

Space Command is a sci-fi series inspired by Star Trek. The ensemble cast for “Space Command: Redemption” features Star Trek: Discovery’s Doug Jones in a leading role. Other franchise stars include Robert Picardo ( Voyager ), Armin Shimerman ( Deep Space Nine ), Faran Tahir (J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek ), and the late Nichelle Nichols (TOS). The cast also includes several Babylon 5 stars including Bill Mumy,  Bruce Boxleitner, and the late Mira Furlan.

Check out the release trailer…

Here is the official synopsis for “Space Command: Redemption”…

Captain Kemmer rescues xeno-archeologist Vonn O’Dara high above Mars, setting into motion a revolution that changes galactic history. The thrilling new space-set film follow the bold adventures in space of the United Planet’s Space Command, a dedicated group of scientists, soldiers and adventurers exploring and taming the vast expanse of our solar system for human colonization.

Here is how Doug Jones described his role in Space Command in a 2018 interview with TrekMovie :

Dorn Neven is an android in Space Command . I loved his character so much. He is much like other characters I have played, in that he is tall and lanky, but very poised and very mannered. He is an android that served as a servant for rich people in this future setting, but he ended up getting a heart and soul of his own, getting more human characteristics and asking questions he wasn’t supposed to ask. So, they end up demoting him and putting him in the salt mines, and that is how you meet him in the beginning of  Space Command .

Space Command was written, directed, and produced by Marc Scott Zicree, who worked on shows like Sliders and Babylon 5 , as well as authoring the influential book The Twilight Zone Companion . Zicree has also been involved in Star Trek, writing the stories for the Next Generation episode “First Contact” and DS9’s “Far Beyond the Stars.” He also wrote and directed the 2007 Star Trek Phase II fan film “World Enough and Time,” starring George Takei. His concept for Space Command was to make something more like Star Trek, in reaction to the dark and dystopic sci-fi of the early 2000s.

“Our idea was an uplifting show like the original Star Trek , which came out when I was 10, blew my mind, and inspired my lifetime fascination for this whole realm. Star Trek was truly revolutionary,” says Zicree in a statement. “Like Star Trek , the stories we present in Space Command are hopeful, taking on various challenges that show we can make a future worth living and not just passively accept defeat. The whole philosophy of the film is that we can achieve all of this through empathy, compassion, and inclusivity. We want to change millions of lives for the better.”

star trek 2009 george kirk

The initial crowdfunding campaign brought in $221,000 in 2012, which helped launch the independent Space Command Studio based in Los Angeles, California. Over the past decade, Zicree has raised $4 million between crowdfunding and selling investment shares. Filming and post-production work on the Space Command series has been ongoing over the last decade with work recently completed on the 2-part pilot, which is the newly released “Space Command: Redemption” movie. Zicree has planned out a 12-part “season” for Space Command with filming for part 6 recently completed and parts 7 and 8 already begun.

Interview: Doug Jones On More Action And Romance For Saru In ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 5

This looks like a slice of classic 80s Sci-Fi cheesiness. Hope it’s enjoyable in that way.

Looks like something I would have rented from Hollywood Video in 2001… So yep, I’ll watch it!

This has been out for years. Not sure what this is about.

Yeah, I wondered this as well when I saw it posted up on YouTube as if it was a new thing. Marc Zicree, bless him, can sometimes be a bit over the top with ‘marketing’. As in, reposting, clipping, whatever. Amusing that such a repost has made its way here as a story though. I guess a correction is in order!

I’ve never heard of this but I’m curious now. I am definitely interested in watching anything that has the classic Star Trek spirit of optimism and hope.

Mira Furlan passed away a couple years ago. A damn shame, she was an underrated actress, and her personal story was equally compelling.

Nichelle Nichols has been gone almost two years now as well…

How is this different from Space Command 2020? It’s on youtube as Space Command Streaming Series (10 parts). Very poor Imdb reviews, two fake 10*s. Space Command Redemption is also on Imdb, no reviews, incomplete cast list. Some poor acting in the trailer.

I watched the original version of “Space Command” some time ago and was not too impressed. Nevertheless, I wish Zicree nothing but the best in this project, and will hopefully get around to checking it out myself eventually. I met him many years ago at the Director’s Guild in Los Angeles for a screening of the Trek pilots which also included his excellent “World Enough and Time,” and he seemed like a very nice guy.

He’s a cool dude, for sure. And Space Command (2020-2022) is packed with cool people. I’m not sure what happened. Perhaps an avalanche of issues. Or maybe it’s just not for me – which is, you know, fine.

But I didn’t so much watch that production as I endured it!

Watching it myself, I went with the second possibility. And you’re correct; that’s fine. If I were 14 and had just finished reading my first Heinlein juvenile, where the characters tended to say things like “gadzooks!,” I probably would have loved it.

A dozen years??? I had thought that the Axanar crowd were the world – class slackers! LMAO.
