9 Fashionable Plane Outfits for the Winter

Table of contents.

Sweater | Coat | Hat | Luggage | Lipstick | Sunglass | Shoes   | Pants

It’s edgy, trendy, classic, and absolutely editorial worthy – this winter travel outfit says fashionista from head to toe. This is an incredibly versatile choice for women who know how to rock a comfortable but chic style.

The trainers ooze travel shoe comfort, while the structured coat offers a sophisticated touch to balance the more casual jeans and easy to wear turtle neck. This is definitely one of our top picks!

You can still pack your capsule wardrobe in a small suitcase even when you travel in the winter by using packing cubes to compress your clothing as shown in this video !

Raincoat | Tunic | Scarf | Tote | Boot | Cover | Jeans | Palette

A perfectly prim look for destinations that won’t greet you with torrential rain or snow, this winter travel outfit offers timeless style that you can wear for years to come without worrying that any piece will go out of style.

To wear an outfit like this it’s all in the fit. Make sure your jacket isn’t too bulky for your frame and the length of your jeans is hemmed to your height. Having a great tailor guarantee you’ll always look on point whether you’re rocking an investment coat or even a pair of sweats. The way a garment falls on your body is everything.

Jacket  | Sweater | Jeans |  Tag | Earrings | Boot | Purse | Luggage | Cream

If all you ever wanted in a travel outfit was a basic look that offered more function than fashion, keep your accessories top of mind. A pair of understated feminine earrings plus a statement purse can make even a standard puffer vest and cable knit sweater look Insta-ready.

Wondering how the most simple outfits look great on fashion bloggers? The hair and makeup add a nice touch as we’ve learned from this Europe travel outfits post !

Packing Cubes | Tee | Jacket 1 | Jacket 2 | Luggage | Lipbalm |  Leggings | Backpack | Scarf  | Boots

How did a pair of leggings and an oversized tee ever look so good? Again, it’s all in the accessories!

Even the very functional, weather-appropriate rain boots enhance the look with a neutral color that isn’t the ever-popular black. Add a structured handbag and a beautiful winter coat and your weather-appropriate from the moment you get on the plane. Read this post for even more waterproof boots !

Raincoat | Sweater | Hat | Sunglass | Luggage | Pants | Scarf  | Shoes | Bag

This look is not for the fashion novice. Pulling off an oversized trench, sweats, and casual sneakers can be translated in many ways when it comes to airplane fashion.

However, this seems to be the winter travel outfit of choice for many fashionistas as I saw at the airport two weeks ago. If you can pull it off, you get bonus points. Are you up for the challenge?

plane-outfits-for-the-winter

Jacket | Purse | Leggings | Earrings | Sweater | Cover | Boot | Mask  | Luggage | Gloves

Oh, how I love this look. It has all the hues in my favorite capsule wardrobe color story: black, grey, white, and blue. Plus, I totally need to add this passport cover to my wish list !

If you’re stuck in an all-black outfit rut or want to break free from a monotone wardrobe, this is a safe selection without steering too far away from your comfort zone. Purple lipstick is optional.

This winter travel outfit may seem a bit much but in reality, it’s only a sweater dress with leggings – anyone can wear that! Plus, it’s comfortable and functional, too. Want a safer bet? This is my go-to merino wool travel dress .

plane-outfits-for-the-winter

Sweater | Jacket | Jeans | Luggage |  Clip | Crossbody | Hat | Lipstick  | Boot

Loving these statement winter coats for winter . From red to pink and bright vivid blue –  they sure can pack a punch! Another reason why we love them this season is because a bright color looks amazing against a grey, drab, and even rainy backdrop.

Not only will they breathe life into your travel wardrobe but they’ll make your travel pictures fashionable, too. Love it!

plane-outfits-for-the-winter

Scarf | Sweater | Luggage | Coat | Cover | Jeans | Eye Shadow | Bag | Cream | Boot

As the temperature drops, our gear gets a bit warmer to suit the snowy weather. Sorel’s boots are the must-have footwear of the season and pair well with leggings or basic jeans. Add a packable down jacket and stay warm all winter long!

plane-outfits-for-the-winter

Sweater | Hat | Bag | Pillow  | Pants | Sunglass | Jacket | Luggage | Boot | Gloves

For a snowy visit with a slightly less casual look, this set is weather-ready and features a more traditional boot-like option. A touch of fur is totally on trend this season and a nice collection of non-boring neutrals brings a bit of interest to a basic-black winter travel wardrobe.

Here are a few tips on how to efficiently get through security as your travel clothing thickens for the winter:

  • Place all jewelry or metal accessories in your personal item or coat pocket
  • Wear boots with faux-laces that can easily zip on and off instead of being laced
  • Take your shoes off before you get to the front of the line, why wait?
  • Always remove your shoes, scarf, hat, and coat – even before security tells you to
  • Be prepared to place all the above items into a bin through security

These are steps that you can always take in advance so you are never held up in security, no matter if you’re wearing flip-flops or boots.

Read these posts for more tips on how to breeze through security this season as well as the disastrous packing mistake to avoid with heavy winter clothing!

Great ideas. I always carry a scarf… can you add some in next time..

alex

You can find a variety of scarves here: https://travelfashiongirl.com/stylish-winter-scarves/ A scarf is a travel girl’s best friend so we assume there’s already one on everyone’s list 😉

Raquel

Jeans are so uncomfortable especially during long flights…why cant a girl just wear sweats. Comfort is more important to me than style

The important thing is that you wear whatever type of clothing you feel your best in. Thanks for commenting!

Kim

Love all the outfits! They are on point. I cannot wait for my next business trip and/or vacation.

Thanks Kim! 🙂

Kate

Great and versatile options! And all very chic – which I find is so hard to do when you’re wearing layer upon layer of clothing.

Thanks Kate! Glad you like them 🙂

Paula Tupper

Too many metal bits that guarantee a slow TSA check in; boots and shoes that cannot be removed quickly or easily, or would be awful on your feet for a LONG flight, some too hot or bulky layers for an overheated cabin or a tight seat. Many times you have to keep your coat on, or on your lap when a crowded flight has overhead bins that are full. I prefer down coats that can be compressed into my spinner or tote, or a cape/ruana that can double as a blanket during the flight. Not my idea of function paired with fashion. Surely you could do better.

Hi Paula, I completely missed the two pairs of pants with metal zippers – thanks for pointing these out!

Sarah

What a tactful response to an inaccurate observation paired with a rude comment. You did not include extraneous metal in your outfits. Furthermore, I completely appreciate the boots because they take up too much room to pack. Not difficult to take off boots or slip off a bracelet as you go through TSA.

Nice outfits–well done 🙂

27 Best Winter Travel Outfits for Women (Trending)

Winter Travel Outfits for Women.  Traveling during the winter can be a tough feat for most of us. You want to look cute but you also want to be comfortable. You want to be warm but you don’t want to be too warm (because the plane and the airport will be heated!) and you want to be able to shed the layers if necessary. Sound familiar? It might seem like a tall order, but girl, we have got you covered! In this article, we will be sharing 27 super trendy, super cute, and super comfortable ensembles to inspire you in your travel wear preparation!

Tips for Travel Wear in Winter

Here are some simple tips to keep in mind when you are planning your travel wear during the cold season:

  • Keep your travel destination in mind. If you are traveling from a cooler place to a warmer place, maybe you don’t want to bring a super heavy coat along. Or if vice versa you will want to pack accordingly.
  • Layers are your best friend. Layers are non-negotiable for traveling in the winter. If you are starting to feel too warm you can always shed a layer or two. And if you are not feeling warm enough, have an extra sweater or cardigan on hand. For this purpose, carry a slightly larger carry-on and save some space for that extra layer.
  • Carry a scarf. A scarf is kind of like a secret weapon if you think about it. Not only are scarves a great way to accessorize your outfit during the winter, but they are small enough to stash in a purse or carry-on bag and pull out if your neck is cold or if you want to wrap something around your shoulders.
  • Choose footwear wisely. Again, this will take some forethought. Where are you landing and will you be in the snow? Will you be doing a lot of walking once landing or are you going straight from plane to car? Are you somebody whose feet are always warm or always cold? These are all things you should think about when deciding what shoes to wear for traveling in the winter.
  • Carry an extra pair of socks. Traveling with extra socks in your carry-on or purse will bring you a lot of peace of mind. Have you been walking in the snow? Switch out those socks once checking in. Are your feet super cold? Pop on that extra pair. Carrying extra socks is a lifesaver.

Now, let’s get on with the outfits!

If you’re wearing the right clothing, there’s no such thing as bad weather. No matter how cold, wet, or snowy it is outside, packing the right clothing for your winter trip will allow you to explore your destination comfortably.

Whether you’re planning a winter getaway to a snowy mountain retreat or simply navigating the cold city streets, selecting the right attire is the most important factor in enjoying your trip. Pack lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing that can be layered to keep you warm and dry in any weather condition. You want to look for pieces that stretch and move with you—and, of course, items that still look stylish in your vacation snapshots.

Headquartered in the outdoor adventure epicenter of Salt Lake City, Utah, KÜHL is your one-stop shop for warm and cozy travel clothing. Here are our top ten picks from the brand for your winter trips.

Editor’s note: This story is sponsored by KÜHL .

The Ultimate Ski Trip Packing List

For the Flight

Long-haul flights can be either freezing cold or boiling hot (and sometimes both throughout one trip). Stay comfortable with loose, temperature-regulating layers you can easily remove or put on as needed.

Inspira Short Sleeve

Couple sitting on a rock taking a break from hiking, the man is wearing a plaid button down and the woman is wearing Inspira Short Sleeve

The perfect base layer system should start with a short-sleeved shirt in case you get overheated. The Inspira Short Sleeve is ideal since it offers UPF 50+ sun protection and moisture-wicking properties for those bluebird sky days. A ribbed collar and cuffs add a stylish design detail, making this shirt good for a wide range of activities at your destination.

Prism Half-Zip Fleece

Two people hiking on a mountainous trail, with the woman in the foreground wearing a Prism Half-Zip Fleece from Kuhl

Fleece is one of the coziest fabrics out there, and we especially love the Prism Half-Zip Fleece . This luxuriously soft Italian fleece has a high warmth-to-weight ratio that will keep you comfortable without being too bulky. The pullover even has softshell shoulders, making carrying a backpack or other shoulder bag easier.

What to Pack for Hiking: 38 Essentials

Haven Joggr

Couple walking along the beach with their dog wearing the Haven Joggers from Kuhl

Wear the Haven Joggrs on the plane, trails, or even to the office—these versatile pants will look at home in any environment. Made from an ultra-soft and stretchy tencel/nylon/spandex fabric blend, you’d never guess that these pants are incredibly durable, with a high-abrasion resistance that will prevent awkward tears, even during tough activities like rock scrambling.

Despite the streamlined look, these pants hide a surprising amount of pockets, including zippered ones in the front and back and a drop-in cell pocket for easy phone access.

Mountain Getaways

Once you land, be prepared for any adventure with clothes that wick away sweat, prevent odors, and stretch with you as you move.

Kontour Lined Pant

Close up of person wearing the Kontour Lined Pant from Kuhl

Don’t want to pack a base layer? Bring the Kontour Lined pants instead, which feature a built-in flannel lining that eliminates the need for thermals underneath. Despite the warm interior, these pants aren’t too bulky. The Kontours are just the right amount of stretchy, giving you room to move without turning saggy after a few wears.

Stretch Voyagr Insulated Jacket

Model wearing the Stretch Voyagr Insulated Jacket from Kuhl

Ever gone for a peaceful hike, and instead of listening to the quiet sounds of nature, all you can hear is the “swish, swish” of your rain jacket fabric as you move? You won’t have that problem with the Stretch Voyagr Insulated Jacket , which is designed to be as silent as it is soft. The lightweight jacket is fully waterproof yet soft and breathable.

Aktivator Hoody

Woman hiking on a mountainous trail wearing the Aktivator Hoody from Kuhl

When you’re active, you’re generating a lot of body heat, so you don’t want to pack too heavy of a jacket lest you overheat. The Aktivator Hoody offers the perfect level of warmth for your mountain adventures. The hoody features three different weights of synthetic insulation, delivering more heat to areas of the body that need it. With a windproof and water-resistant exterior, this hoody will keep you dry and toasty even in a storm.

The Ultimate Footwear Packing List

Close up of the legs of a person wearing the Frost Pant from Kuhl while standing in an ice hockey goal

Hiking in snow, sleet, ice, or cold temperatures? You need the Frost Pants . These technical softshell pants have a wind and water-resistant exterior and are lined with microfleece for a soft next-to-skin feel. Unlike most hiking pants, these are designed for a women’s-specific fit, plus have plenty of pockets (including secure zippered hand pockets.) A bottom hem gusset zips open to allow you to get a custom fit over any winter boot.

Solace Sweater

My Favorite Winter Airport Outfits | Classy & Comfy

Looking for winter airport outfits that will keep you warm while looking stylish? You’ll love my list of comfy and classy airport outfits for winter !

Chic Airport Outfits for Winter

When I’m traveling, I want to look stylish and put-together while also staying comfortable. This is especially true in the cold winter months when I need to make sure my airport outfit is cozy enough to keep me warm through every part of my travel day.

I know how hectic and stressful getting ready for a trip is, but creating fashionable yet functional winter travel outfits doesn’t have to be. Ahead, you’ll find my list of winter airport outfits that are classy and cozy.

What should I wear for a long flight in winter?

When you have a long flight ahead of you, comfort is key! If you’re traveling in the winter, you’ll also want to make sure your travel outfit is warm and features removable layers. Try these pieces:

  • Sweatpants or knit joggers
  • Sweatshirt or knit sweater
  • Matching sets in cozy fabrics
  • Puffer vests
  • Long cardigan

Comfy Winter Airport Outfits

These comfy looks are effortless, easy to recreate, and guaranteed to make you feel stylish. The best part? All of these airport outfits are foolproof for winter, meaning they’ll keep you warm and cozy as you travel!

Puffer Vest + Sweatshirt

Christal wearing black leggings, a tan sweatshirt and a black puffer vest in the airport.

get the look:

This is one of my favorite winter travel outfit formulas. It’s especially great when I’m heading somewhere warmer and need removable layers that aren’t too bulky.

I think the sweatshirt and puffer vest combination looks sporty and classic, especially when paired with my Lululemon black leggings , Anine Bing baseball cap , and Samba sneakers . I’ve also thrown on my Everywhere Fleece belt bag , which is the perfect travel accessory for any comfy winter airport outfit.

Joggers + Wool Bomber

Christal wearing black joggers, a grey sweatshirt, a grey shacket and sneakers at the airport.

Another one of my favorite ways to dress up a winter comfy airport outfit is to pair my cozy Lululemon fleece joggers with a bomber jacket . Bomber jackets have been trending this year and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Here, I’ve styled the bomber jacket with practical sneakers, my fave Anine Bing sweatshirt , and a baseball cap . I’ve also added my Quince leather pouch bag as a stylish and practical hands-free accessory for my passport and essentials.

Cropped Vest + Leggings

Graphic of a winter airport outfit including a black sweater, black leggings, black sneakers and a tan puffer vest.

This chic yet comfy cropped puffer vest and leggings look is next on my list of airport outfits for winter. In my experience, you can never go wrong with wearing a pair of nice black leggings to the airport!

A chic, neutral-toned cropped puffer vest is the perfect piece to pair with an Everlane black turtleneck since it adds an ultra-cozy layer that isn’t too bulky for packing or sitting on the plane.

I finished this winter airport outfit with comfortable Samba sneakers and everyday gold jewelry to elevate the look.

Matching Sweatsuit

Woman wearing a tan matching lounge set with a tan coat and sneakers at the airport.

I’m partial to an all-neutral outfit. I think they always look chic and elevated, whether you’re heading to the airport or strolling around town.

In this comfy winter airport outfit, Lizzy has gone for a matching beige sweat set that gives mega cozy vibes. She’s styled it with a long coat and baseball hat in similar tones to keep the look cohesive.

I love the creamy beige colors in this travel look, but you could create a similar outfit by swapping out the beige for ivory, gray, black, or navy.

Add a Graphic Sweatshirt

Woman wearing black sweat pants and a vogue sweatshirt with high top sneakers in the airport.

In my opinion, you don’t have to ditch sweatshirts in order to create cute airport outfits. Logo or graphic sweatshirts (like this Vogue one ) are fun and stylish but still comfortable. They’re also practical when traveling to warmer destinations where you won’t need many heavy layers.

I’d pair it with comfy trousers, sweatpants, or leggings and add chic sunglasses for a casual, cool winter travel outfit.

A Cozy Cardigan

Woman wearing grey sweatpants, a pink cropped top and a pink cardigan in the airport.

While most of my winter airport outfits are neutral, I love this pop of color that makes this winter travel outfit more exciting. I love how @jenniferxlauren pairs comfy grey sweatpants and New Balance sneakers with a more girly cropped top and a pink knit cardigan.

I think this winter comfy airport outfit would be ideal when flying into a warm climate since you can easily take the cardigan off when you land.

Classy Airport Outfits for Winter

Below are some of my favorite airport outfits for winter. They dress up a basic leggings or sweatpants outfit with elevated pieces.

Casual chic jeans outfit

Graphic of a winter airport outfit including jeans, a striped sweater, a navy coat and sneakers.

Jeans are a must-pack item when traveling, especially in the winter! Since they tend to take up a lot of room in your suitcase, it’s never a bad idea to wear them on the plane, as long as they’re comfortable .

For a classy airport outfit in winter, try a pair of relaxed denim jeans, like these Citizens of Humanity Ayla jeans . A looser fit is key for feeling comfortable on the plane and walking around, in my opinion.

Style your jeans with other winter fashion staples like a striped sweater , long wool coat , and cashmere scarf that will come in handy while traveling in cold weather.

Layered Denim Jacket

Christal wearing black leggings, a white t-shirt, a denim jacket and a black puffer vest with sneakers at the airport.

An oversized denim jacket is a fabulous choice to pair with leggings or other pants when you want a comfy but cute airport outfit.

To keep this cozy chic , I’ve styled a comfy sweatshirt underneath my denim jacket and layered a black puffer vest on top.  My trusty leather pouch looks expensive and classy, but it’s also practical for keeping my travel necessities at arm’s reach.

Sweater Dress + Sneakers

Graphic of a winter airport outfit including a white sweater dress, a white coat, sneakers and a tan scarf.

In my opinion, a sweater dress is a winter wardrobe staple . I’ve found that it also makes for a classy airport outfit for winter when paired with a coordinating long coat, neutral sneakers, and a cashmere scarf.

From my experience, midi or maxi-length sweater dresses work best for travel days since they cover most of your legs and are more winter weather-appropriate. I love this cream ribbed knit dress because you can wear it on the plane, but it will look equally chic out to dinner or during the day exploring must-see sights.

Camel Coat & Uggs

Christal wearing black leggings, a grey sweatshirt, a tan coat and Ugg tasman slippers in the airport.

In my opinion, you can’t beat a grey sweatshirt and black leggings combination. This classic winter airport outfit never fails to keep me comfy and warm on a chilly plane. Plus, I think the sporty combo looks purposeful and well-styled, even though it feels like I’m wearing pajamas.

Here, I’ve paired my go-to Anine Bing sweatshirt with black leggings and Ugg Tasman Slippers. Adding a chic oversized camel coat on top makes this classy airport outfit feel even more elevated.

Matching Knit Set + Sneakers

Graphic of a cozy winter airport outfit including a matching sweat pant and sweater set.

A matching knit set is one of my go-to classy winter airport outfits (or really any time of the year) . For winter travel, t his matching teddy brown knit set from Everlane is a dream! It will keep you looking cute and feeling comfortable even on long travel days.

Pair it with your favorite sneakers and travel essentials and you’re ready to go!

Creating a winter airport outfit doesn’t have to be complicated. Even on long days filled with planes, cars, hotels, and all-day travel, you can rock a comfy and cozy travel outfit that’s also cute and stylish. Follow my style guide to make picking the perfect winter travel outfit a breeze so you can sit back and enjoy your trip from start to finish!

The best winter travel clothes and outfits

Find out how to layer winter clothes, check out which winter clothes we should pack and get inspired by some winter outfits for men, women and kids.

We love to hit the road during the winter and explore different destinations, but sometimes we struggle to decide which winter clothes to pack or how to layer them , right? But don’t worry! In this article, we will give you amazing tips and we will recommend winter travel outfits for women , men and kids considering whether it’s for mildly, moderately or intensely cold weather.

You will notice that below we will mention items from Columbia Sportswear , a global clothing and accessories company for outdoor activities that was born over 80 years ago in the United States. Today, it is a reference in technologies travelers’ different needs in our journeys (in the midst of) amid nature.

Below there is a summary of what you’ll find in this article. If you prefer, feel free to jump straight to the desired topic:

The 4 biggest mistakes travelers make when dressing in winter

How to layer winter clothes, clothes for mildly cold temperatures (from 50ºf to 68ºf / 10ºc to 20ºc), clothing for intense cold (below 0ºc – 32ºf), winter clothes for babies and children, packing list for a winter vacation, conscious consumption, discount coupon for winter clothes, frequently asked questions about clothing for winter travel, 1) putting on too many clothes.

Several people wear all the blouses and jackets available in their closet to the point that they have difficulty moving around, consequently causing great discomfort.

The ideal is to dress according to what we call a clothing layering system , in which each layer must have a specific function, so you don’t necessarily need the number of pieces. So you can maintain the necessary comfort even for winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding.

2) Not wearing waterproof clothing and boots in snowy destinations

Snow is water, so if you make a little angel on the ground with cotton clothes, step on snow with regular sneakers, or make snowballs with wool gloves, you’ll be wet and freezing. That’s why it’s essential that items like waterproof boots and waterproof jackets accompany you on destinations with snow .

3) Forgetting to warm the extremities of the body

When planning a winter vacation in the US or elsewhere in the world, it is common for us to worry only about finding the ideal winter jacket , but did you know that the first areas of our body that suffer from the cold are the fingers, toes, nose and ears? It happens because they receive a lesser amount of blood flow.

When packing for your winter holidays, make sure you don’t forget to add warm socks , gloves , a bonnet and a scarf to complement your winter travel outfit .

4) Not investing in clothing and equipments with the appropriate technologies for the occasion

Before shopping for the most beautiful winter clothes and accessories , you need to understand their technologies and characteristics. It’s no use looking pretty in you new winter outfit when the lack of comfort may prevent you from enjoying your trip.

Have you ever wondered how many layers of clothes to wear in winter ? Well, the clothing layering system involves the three main layers that we will detail below, but it is worth remembering that nothing stops you from wearing more if necessary. They are the basis for you to stay dry , comfortable and warm in winter. Note how one piece complements the function of the other:

1. Base Layer

The base layer is the garment that, in contact with the body, maintains its temperature. When the fabric has the ideal technology, it transfers the body’s sweat to the outside (or to the second layer), keeping it dry even after a long hike. Currently, some base layers even have thermal reflectivity, where metallic dots of the fabric reflect the heat that the body generates. Incredible, right?!

LMTM Tip: Both long sleeves and tights shall have a stretch fabric and be tight to your body; otherwise, the cold breeze will reach your skin.

2. Fleece or feather

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Elaine Villatoro 🇧🇷 · Turismo Sustentável / Sustainable Travel (@livemoretravelmore)

The most commonly used item as the second layer is made of fleece , a soft, lightweight , easy-drying and comfortable fabric, perfect for mild to moderate cold weather, and the down jacket , which is an excellent lightweight thermal insulator that can stay very small when folded, it is mostly used in case of moderate to intense cold weather.

3. Waterproof jacket, pants and boots

Finally, the ideal is that you have waterproof pieces to protect you from the cold wind , snow or even rain . It is important that they are breathable, so you can get rid of the sweat produced by your body.

Destinations such as Domingos Martins in Espírito Santo generally offer a mildly cold climate, with temperatures that are rarely below 20ºC – 68ºF. In these cases, having just a fleece, a windbreaker and a waterproof boot may be enough.

Check out some items below for you to assemble an outfit with winter clothes for women :

Jaqueta fleece Columbia Sportswear

Clothing for moderate cold (from 0ºC to 10ºC – 32ºF to 50ºF)

If you are going to travel to a moderately cold destination where temperatures can reach below 10ºC – 50ºF, such as Gramado in Rio Grande do Sul, Campos do Jordão in São Paulo, Monte Verde in Minas Gerais, Santiago or San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, you can choose to wear a second skin , a feather jacket , and a windproof waterproof jacket .

Below you can find a suggestion for winter outdoor clothes for men :

Winter clothes for men - Moderately cold weather

Now, if you are looking for clothes for the European winter , such as Iceland and Norway, where temperatures quickly drop below 0ºC – 32ºF, you should protect yourself with a more powerful second skin with thermal reflectivity , preferably, and a heavier fleece. If you want, you can add a vest , finishing with a waterproof feather jacket with highly reinforced thermal insulation .

In this case, waterproof and breathable pants and waterproof snow boots with a powerful thermal insulator are also essential, in addition to waterproof gloves , a neck protector and a bonnet.

See below an example of intense winter clothes for women :

Winter clothes for women - Intensely cold Columbia Sportswear

We can’t forget about our little ones, right?! The recommendation for them is also to wear the layering system On Columbia website you will find winter clothes for babies and children of all ages, as well as accessories that have the necessary technologies for them.

We made a packing list for your winter vacation . Check it out:

  • Fleece or feather jacket

Winter travel outfits

An extra tip, which is not related to clothes and accessories but I think it’s worth mentioning here, is that it’s not because it’s cold, that it’s not sunny! So bring and wear sunscreen. I remember when a friend of mine came back from a trip to Chile looking like a raccoon, he went skiing with sunglasses on but forgot his sunscreen.

And speaking of sunglasses, if you go to a place that snows, these will be a very important item because it gets really bright when the sun hits the snow and reflect the light.

We, who seek to practice sustainable tourism , also need to be concerned about making consumption more conscious, avoiding the so-called Fast Fashion and looking for products that last for a long time.

Items like feather jackets should have some certification like the Responsible Down Standard , which proves that geese are not mistreated for their feathers to be collected. Unfortunately, in many cases this procedure is done in a very cruel way.

In addition, we need to investigate whether the production process of companies is done ethically and responsibly with employees. After all, we don’t want to contribute to slave labor.

We consider several advantages of Columbia in this sense before bringing it as a partner and promoting its products. If you want to know about their sustainability initiatives, check this link .

Columbia Sportswear stores in the USA

You can find the Columbia Sportswear store near you in the US here .

Columbia Sportswear has winter clothes for all kinds of situations, whether for the typical European winter, the ski seasons in Chile or even winter clothes for children and babies . You can shop through their website or go directly to one of their stores: find a store here .

Ideally, you should dress in a layered system, seeking to maintain your body temperature and sweat perspiration through base layers with appropriate technology, warming the body through a fleece or feather jacket , and finishing with a waterproof winter jacket to be protected from cold, wind and rain.

The main clothing you need to wear for cold weather is a base layer, fleece, and a waterproof jacket. Read more…

Winter Travel Outfits for Ladies

We all know that traveling during this time of year can be tricky, but you don’t have to let it ruin your trip! By packing the right outfits for travel in winter, you’ll be able to stay warm and comfortable no matter where you’re going.

This guide will help you pick out some stylish outfits for travel in winter so that no matter how far away from home or how long your trip is, you’ll still look great while staying warm and dry!

Check out these winter travel outfits. Traveling in winter can be a real drag. It's cold, there is snow everywhere and your clothes get wet from the rain or melted snow.

How should I dress for winter travel?

Since winter brings in some pretty harsh weather, you’ll have to dress for the cold. This holds true for both plane and car travel.

However, just because you’re dressing for the cold doesn’t mean that you should go overboard when packing your clothes. You will still want to look stylish!

Since it is winter, layering is very important when picking out outfits for travel in winter. This means you’ll want to wear many thin layers rather than a few thick ones.

Layers are key in dressing for winter because what will keep you warm is the air between your clothes, not the clothes themselves.

When your clothes are layered, they trap air in between them, which keeps you warm. The best travel outfits will let you adjust your layers as needed.

On top of layers, the outer layer of the outfit is extremely important. You’ll want to ensure it’s waterproof or water-resistant, at least! If you wear a good quality winter coat and pants, then even snow won’t get through easily.

shoes stacked on shelves

What about shoes?

Wearing the right kind of shoes for winter travel is extremely important. The last thing you want, when it’s snowing outside, is to put on high heels and slip all over the place! That being said, there are ways around this.

For starters, if you have a pair of stylish boots, wear them! You can wear these boots in the snow with thick socks and still look good.

If you don’t have any winter boots, another option is to wear rain boots when it’s snowing. These are water-resistant, so no matter how much snow falls, your feet will stay dry. If there isn’t any snow where you’re going, you can always wear regular shoes with a thick pair of socks.

How to pack snow boots

If you’re going somewhere where there could be snow, pack a pair of waterproof boots. To pack them safely, you should pack them close to their full size (without wearing them) and then stuff them with socks, leggings, or anything else you can roll easily.

How to store bracelets without clutter

What about accessories?

Winter travel calls for hats, scarves, and gloves, as well as sunglasses to protect your eyes from the snow. A good quality winter coat will keep you warm around your neck and face. Make sure that whatever scarf you choose is long enough to cover your neck and face!

Don’t forget to pack your favorite jewelry .

For the Airport

While traveling during the winter you’ll want to make sure you get to your flight on time. Make sure your outfit is comfortable enough that it doesn’t restrict or impede your movement but stylish enough to make you feel confident and positive about your appearance.

It’s also helpful if your style is somewhat similar to the style of your destination, so stick to a more conservative look if you’re going somewhere more conservative and vice versa.

Remember that you’ll likely be dealing with colder weather when you get to your destination, especially if it’s in a northern location, so make sure that whatever clothes you wear for travel in winter can go from the plane to the car easily.

When you get where you’re going, or if it’s somewhere cold when you leave, try getting a travel coat, which is lightweight and easy to pack away when not in use. Also, ensure your scarves can double as a blanket on the plane!

What should I wear on a plane in cold weather?

The best winter travel outfit for flying will make you feel comfortable in your seat and stylish enough not to feel out of place.

Bring layers! Dress in tights, leggings , or warm pants under your dress or skirt. This will ensure you are comfortable during the flight and remain warm without feeling too restricted.

If possible, pack a cardigan layered over your outfit, so it’s easy to remove should the plane get too cold. You can also pack some warm socks and slip those on right before you get on the plane to keep your feet nice and toasty.

Once you’re on the plane, stay as comfortable as possible. Make sure that the clothes you wear for travel in winter aren’t too tight or constricting, which can make it difficult, if not impossible, to get up and move around.

Check out these winter travel outfits. Traveling in winter can be a real drag. It's cold, there is snow everywhere and your clothes get wet from the rain or melted snow.

Dresses for Travel in Winter

A winter travel outfit doesn’t have to be too difficult to put together if you stick with a simple and classy dress . A winter travel dress that is loose and comfortable will keep you warm while keeping your style intact throughout the trip.

You may want to consider bringing a sweater just in case, but you don’t want the sweater to be too tight, or it might make it difficult for you to move around.

A nice dress is perfect for traveling during the winter. All you need are some tights and warm boots, plus a simple cardigan if you get cold quickly. If your destination is somewhere more conservative, make sure to dress more modestly.

Winter Road Trip Outfits for Women

Road trips are fun during the summertime but can be pretty uncomfortable if you’re not prepared for them during the winter months. Again, dress in many layers so that you’ll be able to regulate your temperature easily by taking layers off or putting more back on.

Don’t wear anything too tight! If your travel outfits are too constricting, it can get pretty uncomfortable after sitting in one position for too long. Wear clothes that are comfortable.

Wear comfortable shoes that will keep your feet warm but that are easy to take off should you want or need to get out of the car. Try to wear something waterproof so no matter how much snow and wetness there is, you don’t have to worry about getting soaked.

Winter Travel Clothes for Women

When traveling during the winter, you’ll want to dress in layers. Layer thin tights or leggings under your dress or skirt so you are comfortable and warmer without being too restricted. Then, put on a nice long sweater over everything else to keep out the cold!

For boots, make sure to pick ones that are comfortable and waterproof. Boots with a low heel will be easier to walk in during the trip, but high heels can work too if you’re willing to sacrifice some comfort for style.

If winter travel clothes aren’t an option for you, consider packing jeans or denim pants, thick tights or leggings, thick socks, flats, and a nice thick sweater. This combo will work for many destinations in the wintertime!

a woman looking through her closet

Best Travel Dresses for Winter

If you’re not too keen on wearing tights or leggings under your dress, a nice winter travel outfit can still be easy to put together. Pick a pretty dress or maxi skirt that is made of a lightweight fabric and layering it with a nice sweater will keep you warm and stylish at the same time!

Make sure that whatever boots you decide to wear are comfortable and waterproof. Boots with a wedge heel will be easier to walk around in compared to high heels, especially if you’ll be walking on snow or ice.

If cold weather makes it difficult for you to find suitable clothes for your trip, having some jeans or other pants packed is always a good idea. Jeans will keep you warm during the trip, plus they are easy to rock with a simple t-shirt or blouse. Add some boots and you’re set!

Pack whatever is comfortable for you knowing that there are plenty of options out there! You can always wear layers underneath your travel outfit if it’s not quite warm enough. The most important thing is that you are comfortable! You don’t want to be overly cold or suffer from the heat too much.

Having a few staple items in your winter wardrobe is important for any woman who wants to stay stylish and warm during the cold weather months. Pick out three or four outfits that all work well together so you can mix and match without a problem.

Winter travel must-haves

Here are a few must-haves for winter travel outfits.

  • Lightweight dress in a solid color that’s appropriate for many destinations
  • Sweater or cardigan to wear over the top of your dress
  • Tights and leggings to wear under your dress (or jeans if you prefer)
  • Boots with wedge heels  for easy walking on snow and ice. Totally cute with tights!
  • Purse that’s large enough to carry all your essentials and extra layers (like sweaters!) if needed.

Make sure you pack anything else that will be necessary for your trip – coats, scarves, hats – and you’re set! Keep yourself warm and comfy while still looking stylish during the winter months by following these tips.

Winter is not an excuse to run out and buy some major winter clothes. Pack what you have in your closet! A nice pair of leggings, a few light sweaters, a good pair of boots with cute socks pulled up high – plenty of things will work for winter travel style without breaking the bank.

Best Travel Clothes For Europe In Winter

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Feb 25, 2023 | Europe , Travel Gear , Travel Tips

From visiting the famous Christmas markets to skiing in world-class resorts to seeing Santa in Lapland, Europe is a magical place to be in the winter.

If you’ve backpacked around the continent in the summer, visiting Europe in winter will offer a totally different experience. Thus, seeing Europe in this season is a must.

Ready To Travel? Don't Go Without Travel Insurance.

Check Prices

The weather in Europe can range from pretty chilly to freezing zero temperatures. Thus, you’ll need plenty of warm, insulated, thermal, and fleece-lined clothing.

But if you’re unsure what to wear in Europe during winter, fear not.

In this guide, we’ll list all the essential travel clothes for Europe in winter so you’ll jet off as prepared as can be.

Before we get into what to pack for Europe in winter, remember that the continent’s climate differs from country to country.

Suppose you’re planning a winter wonderland trip where you’ll ski on the slopes or ride through the thick snow in Lapland.

In that case, you’ll need warmer clothing than if you’re enjoying a city break in Barcelona in winter .

So, along with following the advice in this guide, research the typical winter climate of where you are heading.

Without further ado, let’s talk about European winter fashion .

woman traveling in germany in winter

When you start packing for Europe in winter, you’ll likely first think about oversized coats and cozy jumpers.

However, in the continent’s coldest parts, you’ll need multiple layers to stay warm.

Typically, you’ll wear a t-shirt, a long-sleeve top, a jumper, and a coat. So make sure you have enough short and long-sleeve tees for every day of your trip.

Of course, some days, the weather will be mild enough to omit the long sleeve layer.

Still, a general rule for surviving winter in Europe is that you can never have enough clothes!

If you particularly hate the cold or are going on a skiing vacation, include a few thermal base layers too.

This Smartwool Merino 250 Baselayer Crew is super effective at regulating body temperature.

Jumpers And Hoodies

Next up, pull out all the comfy jumpers and warm hoodies in your wardrobe, as you’ll be wearing these every day.

However, as styles of sweaters and cardigans vary, you’ll need to be sure the ones you are bringing are best suited to winter.

For example, knit jumpers with large gaps between the knitting or crochet styles won’t be sufficient to retain body heat.

The best type of winter jumper is made from wool or fleece, with lots of coverage around the neck, such as roll neck and turtle neck styles.

This Ailaile Wool Turtleneck Pullover is perfect for women, and this Aran Crafts Irish Soft Wool Cable Knitted Sweater is ideal for men.

We also recommend bringing a thermal hoodie, like this one from Geek Lighting . The heavyweight zip-up sweatshirt has a thick sherpa fleece lining on the body and hood.

Winter Coat

Every winter Europe trip calls for a good quality winter coat. However, there are various styles of coats, so which is best for winter traveling Europe?

The answer depends on where you’re going and what you’re doing.

Suppose you are exploring the city sights and Christmas markets. In that case, this Daily Ritual Teddy Bear Fleece Oversized-Fit Lapel Jacket will keep you feeling toasty in between each glass of mulled wine.

Or for men, this Calvin Klein Hooded RipStop Water and Wind Resistant Jacket is ideal. It is stylish and has an interior fleece bib with a zipper closure for extra warmth.

If you’re planning to take lots of walks and hikes, a long insulated coat like this one from Columbia is a great option.

It features faux down insulation, Omni-heat thermal reflective lining, and a water-resistant shell.

Those who don’t cope well with the cold might consider this TIDEWE Heated Jacket .

This coat is unique as it features an interior battery pack with 3 adjustable heat settings to instantly create additional warmth whenever needed.

In addition, the anti-static fleece liner traps the heat produced, and the exterior is water and wind-resistant, too.

man skiing in austria in winter

You likely won’t need to pack any shorts for your winter Europe trip.

However, you will need plenty of thick and warm long pants, like insulated leggings for women and fleece-lined tracksuit bottoms for men.

Jeans are also a popular piece of winter apparel in Europe. However, if you’re heading somewhere very chilly, like Sweden or Switzerland, you might need to wear a base layer.

Leggings can make a good base layer for women, and long johns serve the purpose for men.

If you want to dress up a bit for nights in the city, women can pair these VERO MONTE Opaque Warm Fleece Lined Tights with a winter dress and trench coat.

For men, wear some long johns under your favorite pair of chinos or smart trousers for an invisible warmth layer.

Sneakers and boots are the two primary footwear you will need for winter in Europe.

Many winter boots are suitable for both everyday walking and hiking. However, if you plan to do activities in the snow, you’ll need hiking boots with high traction to handle icy surfaces.

The SOREL Women’s Explorer II Joan Faux Fur Boots are super versatile, thanks to their suede and faux fur design.

Thus, you can wear them anywhere, from hiking trails to the high street.

They also have 100g insulation, are waterproof, and have a high-traction rubber EVA footbed.

If you’re not heading anywhere snowy or icy, you can opt for a more stylish city-style boot like these Dr. Martens .

The Chelsea-style leather boots have a fleece lining and the iconic Dr. Martens air-cushioned sole, providing all-day comfort.

For men, these Vostey Chukka Boots will take you from the city to the countryside, thanks to their clever functionality combined with their stylish design.

The faux leather boots are water resistant, have durable laces, and have a non-slip rubber outsole.

Accessories

Winter accessories like hats, gloves, and scarves are essential for staying warm in the coldest season.

First, choose a winter hat that covers your ears, protecting them from the icy winds.

A faux fur-lined Russian trooper hat like this one from Tough Headwear is a top choice for trapping heat in the coldest conditions.

For scarves, choose thick cable knit styles like this chunky wrap scarf by Neosan . This oversized scarf comes in various colors and patterns, making any outfit stylish and eye-catching.

Neck warmers are an excellent alternative to scarves as they are fleece lined and provide more coverage around the neck area.

Thus, if you’re heading somewhere snowy, a neck warmer like this one from NovForth is a must.

Lastly, these OZERO Winter Thermal Gloves are ideal. They feature touchscreen fingers, so you don’t have to take them off whenever you want to make a call or text.

Plus, along with the thermal fleece lining, they have a windproof and water-resistant outer shell.

Europe Winter Outfits

Now you know the layers you need for your winter vacation, you can start planning your winter travel outfits.

Here are our top three European winter travel outfits for men and women.

Lapland in winter

Below you’ll find winter outfit ideas for men.

City Explorer

European cities are known for their extravagant Christmas light displays and festive markets.

If you love the most magical time of the year, you’ll surely spend significant time checking out the winter offerings in the European cities.

European winter fashion combines warmth with style, so start with these SOREL Cheyanne Metro Hi Waterproof Insulated Winter Sneakers in gray quarry.

The leather and suede hybrid adds a touch of class, while the 100g insulation will stop your feet from getting chilled on those cold winter nights.

Then, keep your legs warm with these Wrangler Authentics Fleece Lined Carpenter Pants in autumn khaki color.

Combine these with this MAGCOMSEN Sherpa Lined Sweatshirt in light gray and this Dockers Weston Wool Blend Scarf Coat in charcoal.

The jacket has a light ultra-loft polyfill for added warmth and comes with a detachable plaid scarf.

From Austria to Switzerland to Italy and France, skiing opportunities are abundant during winter.

These countries have some of the most renowned ski resorts, so it makes sense to schedule some skiing during your winter vacation.

However, spending the entire day in the snow can get pretty cold, so you’ll need plenty of insulation.

Start with this WEERTI Thermal Baselayer Set , consisting of a fleece-lined top and bottoms. It is lightweight but warm, minimizing heat loss.

Over the top of your base layers, wear these Gash Hao Waterproof Softshell Snowboard Pants in black.

They are insulated with fleece lining and have a waterproof, quick-drying soft shell. There are also zippers on the bottom of the legs, designed to stop snow from getting inside the pants.

Pair the pants with this VICALLED Hooded Mountain Ski Jacket with fleece lining and multiple zip pockets for storing your belongings when out on the slope.

Lapland Adventure

Whether taking your own children or fulfilling your childhood dream, visiting the region of Lapland in Finland is a truly memorable experience.

Nonetheless, Finland is one of the coldest countries in Europe , so warmth is the priority when planning your Lapland outfits.

Build your look with these Columbia Bugaboot III Snow Boots . The proprietary technology keeps all the elements out.

At the same time, the alpine style 200g insulation layer helps you take on the freezing temperatures.

These Yeokou Sherpa-Lined Active Thermal Joggers will keep you warm and comfy. The cuffed ankle design makes it easy to tuck them in your boots to eliminate heat loss.

Pair these with the matching Yeokou Warm Fleece Crewneck Sweatshirt with a thick Sherpa Lining.

Then, complete this winter look with the Columbia Buck Butte Hooded Jacket in graphite/black, which features 100% synthetic down insulation.

Now, let’s see some outfit ideas for women.

If you’re spending your European winter vacation in the city, opt for this EXLURA Smockneck Long Sleeve Sweater Dress in apricot for a touch of elegance.

It is body hugging with stylish long puff sleeves and looks fab with a black pair of Opaque Warm Fleece Lined Tights .

Pair the dress with these WEATHERPROOF Calf High Boots in brown.

They are insulated with breathable uppers and a non-slip grip, so you’ll stay protected should it start to snow or rain.

Finally, add this elegant Grace Karin Notch Lapel A Line Peacoat with a self-tie belt.

If you’re heading out onto the slopes, ensure you have the suitable gear. Start with some thermal leggings and this MERIWOOL Base Layer Shirt made from 8.5-micron 250g/m2 weight interlock-knit Merino wool.

Next, layer up with these BenBoy Fleece Slim Cargo Snow Pants in gray rose, which are waterproof and windproof with multiple zipper pockets.

Then, match them with this GEMYSE Mountain Ski Jacket in rose, which is 100% waterproof, including the zippers.

In addition, the jacket has many other cool features like adjustable velcro cuffs and stretchable gloves with thumb holes to retain warmth.

Finally, complete the ski-ready look with these Columbia Slopeside Village Omni-Heat Mid Snow Boots in clay/timber.

If your European winter vacation will feature Reindeer sleigh rides and chasing the Northern Lights, you’ll want to look cute and feel cozy.

These 90 Degree By Reflex High Waist Fleece Lined Leggings ooze comfort and warmth and come in various colors, making your outfit stylish and vibrant.

Choose the Cabernet shade and pair them with this super snuggly KIRUNDO Fuzzy Fleece Buttoned Hoodie in beige.

Stay warm with this Angashion Fuzzy Fleece Lapel Open Front Long Coat in dark camel for your outer layer.

The coat goes perfectly with these Globalwin Snow Boots in camel shade, which are insulated to withstand temperatures up to 15F and fully waterproof.

trip outfits for winter

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

As a travel writer and frequent traveler, I’m a huge fan of a matching set —  it’s convenient, effortless, and acts like a mini capsule wardrobe to serve tons of functions on travel days and at my destination. And as someone who always seems to get cold on planes — in any season — I’m always looking for warm and cozy two-piece sets to keep me warm on travel days, even if I’m winging off to somewhere tropical.

Fortunately, Amazon offers a ton of winter travel outfits that come as matching sets, so there’s no thinking required. And, they're a great value since you get two pieces for the price of one. Plus, you can mix and match them with whatever else is in your suitcase for endless outfit possibilities. My favorites are all under $55, and ship fast with Amazon Prime if you're looking to get them ASAP for your next trip (or maybe for some last-minute holiday shopping).

Prettygarden Women's Turtleneck and Pants Set

This matching set comes with a turtleneck top for extra warmth in the winter, plus a pair of super-comfortable elastic-waist pants with a decidedly cool feature: an adjustable velcro hem lets you customize the width just how you like it for style, comfort, and ease of wear. I’d style the set together for comfy travel days, then pair the turtleneck with jeans or even a skirt and tights for a more pulled-together look at my destination. Even better: it’s on sale right now for 20 percent off.

Etcyy Women's Knitted Sweatsuit

I love the striped detailing on this two-piece set: It’s giving Parisian vibes and I’m here for this timeless travel look. The set comes with a knit top and wide-leg pants that have a subtle flare at the hem. I’d wear this on the plane with sneakers, out and about for city sightseeing — and even to a work meeting at my destination, paired with dressier shoes or boots. It's so versatile, and it's on sale starting at $39.

Caracilia Women's Sweater Set

If a set works for me, I tend to buy it in multiple colors so that I have options. I can see that happening with this cozy sweater set, which is available in 18 hues. I love the slouchy fit of the wide-leg pants and oversized turtleneck sweater for comfortable travel days. The subtle-yet-elegant button detailing on the sleeves elevates the look, so the sweater would also be great for a cozy evening out paired with dressier trousers. The duo has earned rave reviews from Amazon shoppers. One wrote , "The bottoms paired perfectly with a tank top, and when the temperature dropped, the sweater kept me comfortably warm."

Ekouaer Women's 3-Piece Knit Lounge Set

As someone who writes at home in my pajamas when I’m not on the road, I have high expectations for comfort; if it doesn’t wear like pajamas, I’d rather pass. This three-piece set available in 20 colors is so pajama- esque ; it’s perfect for sleeping but also works great for travel-day layering. The stretchy, ribbed-knit set includes a long-sleeve, open-front cardigan, a tank top with drawstrings at both sides so you can adjust it for length and style, and flowy elastic-waist pants.

Casly Women's Half-Zip Sweatshirt and Wide-Leg Pants Set

I love a sweatsuit for travel comfort — but I love it even more when that sweatsuit has a polished silhouette that makes it even more versatile for dressing up a bit, especially when I wear the pieces separately. This Casly one includes a half-zip sweatshirt with ribbed cuffs, a V-neck, drop shoulders, and — my favorite — thumbholes. When paired with the high-waisted, wide-leg sweatpants, it looks more sophisticated than typical styles.

Weerti Women's Thermal Underwear Set

Thermal underwear is perfect to wear on winter travel days because it’s lightweight, cozy, flexible, and easy to layer. I’d wear this on the plane, as base layers at a cold-weather destination, and even as warm pajamas in drafty accommodations. This popular, buttery soft set has close to 10,000 reviews and it's currently marked down to $27.

Hooever Women's Fuzzy Shearling Fleece Set

This ultra-cozy set should come with a warning for comfort-obsessed travelers like me: You may never take it off. Equally soft inside and out, it’s made of plush, shearling fleece and features a lapel collar top and elastic-waist bottoms — with two pockets, key for stashing your essentials on travel days or keeping your remote and smartphone handy when lounging on the couch.

Anrabess Women's Crewneck Sweater and Wide-Leg Pants Set

Because the top in this set is sleeveless, it’s perfect for layering; I’d wear it under a cardigan or wrap the plane for warmth, and then I’d swap out the top layer for a blazer to dress it up at my destination. You can even wear it on top of a lightweight long-sleeve shirt or collared button-up for additional styling options. The pull-on pants have a comfy elastic waistband and wide-leg silhouette, but the vertical seams dress up the look plenty. In fact, one reviewer dubbed the set “expensive-looking and classy."

Viottiset Women's V-Neck Sweater Lounge Set

This oversized, V-neck ribbed knit sweater lounge set is so easy to wear, hence why it's an Amazon best-seller . On top, you get a sweater with stylish drop shoulders and batwing sleeves, and on the bottom: high-waisted pants with cozy flared hems. Choose between 24 different colors, each of which are perfect for the cold-weather months, and make sure to add it to your cart while it's 31 percent off.

Felina Women's Jersey Top and Joggers Set

I love how lightweight this matching jersey set is; it's ideal for un-bulky layering if you're headed somewhere chilly and the pieces can easily be paired with your favorite travel clothes to create cozy variety. The long-sleeve crewneck top has dropped shoulders and a longer-line hem, while the joggers have a drawstring waistband and relaxed fit. They’re super soft, super versatile, and moisture-wicking. One enthusiastic Amazon customer called them “perfect for airplane travel,” adding that the two can be easily layered with a scarf for additional warmth and coverage.

Urbex Men's Tracksuit

"Airport dad" is the latest style trend sweeping the travel world  — and I’m completely here for it, because airport moms have plenty of their own logistics and gear to manage. I’d give this hooded sweatsuit set to my husband — my forever partner in hustling the family through planes, trains, and automobiles — because it’s highly revered for its warmth and comfort, plus it had tons of zippered pockets for carrying essentials on travel days.

Coofandy Men's Sweatsuit

I love a full-zip hoodie; it’s so much easier to wear than a pullover and easier to put on and take off in a cramped airplane cabin. This set has a full-zip closure sweatshirt, plus drawstring-waisted sweatpants with strategically slanted pockets to ensure that nothing falls out while you're on the move. Available in sizes ranging from S to 4XL and 16 colors, it's a top-selling combo among Amazon shoppers; more than 2,000 reviewers gave it a five-star rating and noted that it’s “ very comfortable ” with a just-right fit.

Free People summer vacation outfits

I'm getting ready for a summer full of beach days and weekend getaways, and my fellow Who What Wear staffer, Angelica Zdzienicki , is on the exact same page. As L.A. girls, we know a thing or two about finding pieces to wear both around the city and on spontaneous trips to the beach (aka the perfect vacation outfit). That's why, when we saw the new arrivals from Free People's sub-brand free-est , we knew we had to get our hands on everything. Below, we put together a few of our favorite looks that we can't wait to wear this season, including breezy dresses , free-flowing bottoms , and sunny-day accessories . Whether you're taking a road trip up the coast, enjoying a staycation, or jet-setting to a remote location, you'll want to see everything we recommend packing.

Free People summer vacation outfits

"It feels like summer here in L.A., and while I'm not in an Italian beach town, this outfit makes me feel like I'm walking on cobblestones with a gelato in hand. The black dress, white ballet flats, and perfect sunnies are all I need for my effortless summer vacation outfit whether I'm traveling or not. The low-back detail on the dress is all I needed to see to add it to my cart." — Angelica Zdzienicki, Social Media Strategist

Feeling Bonita Midi

"This linen minidress is the perfect anytime, anywhere dress. Wear it with sneakers for city explorations, sandals for beach moments, or heels for a memorable night out on vacation. For this look, I leaned into a '60s coastal-cowgirl vibe and styled the dress with brown statement boots, a matching bag, and warm sunnies." — Zdzienicki

Full of Sunshine Cotton-Linen Mini

"This summer, I'm planning a few weekend escapes to get out of the city. Santa Barbara and Laguna Beach are just two places on my hit list, and since these coastal cities are known for their laid-back vibe, I want to put together an outfit that feels easy and effortless. I can't say enough good things about the Lowen Midi Skirt—it's flowy and elegant, and I'll wear it long after my travels. I styled it with a top in a fun hue and accessorized with a belt and these pretty Dr. Scholl's x Free People clogs to add a bohemian vibe." — Raina Mendonça, Associate Fashion Editor

Condado Sweater Top

"Since my 9-to-5 outfits revolve around neutral wardrobe staples, I like to spice things up for vacation. I take the opportunity to play with more colors and add fun accessories that break away from my standard gold hoops. When I saw free-est's Liza Drop-Waist Midi, I knew the dress was a no-brainer for all my adventures. The drop-waist silhouette is one of my style trademarks, and the dark denim immediately had me dreaming of sunny days by the coast. I decided to style it with blue sandals to create a monochromatic look, and the on-trend glass-flower choker adds a cute detail." — Mendonça

One tester describes it as being "comfortable with just the right amount of plush" while others call it "the best mattress ever." Several testers reported that it feels firmer, has great edge support and sleeps cooler than other mattresses (a great bonus if you tend to overheat during sexual activity).

READ MORE: Saatva Mattress Review

This boxed mattress will be delivered straight to your doorstep (at no extra cost) at a fraction of the price of other mattresses . Best of all, it doesn't feel cheap. A hybrid design, it's constructed with memory foam, coils and a quilted pillowtop for the perfect combination of comfort, support and pressure relief as you shift around throughout the night. According to our product analysts, it's not so memory foam heavy that it makes it difficult to move around on the bed.

We've also noticed that younger adults, including new homeowners or apartment renters in their 20s, especially like it since they're less likely to be troubled by the lack of edge support.

Tester notes : Survey respondents love this mattress's great value that doesn't sacrifice its comfortable feel. "This mattress is supportive and plush, and it feels like a fancy hotel bed," one tester says.

Described by our fiber scientists as the "Goldilocks of mattresses," this hybrid mattress is neither too hard nor too soft . It's the perfect pick for couples who have different preferences since the medium firmness should offer a happy balance. Constructed with layers of foam over coils and add-ons like zoned sections for ergonomic support, a built-in pillowtop for extra comfort and a moisture-wicking cover, it's a bit pricier than other boxed hybrids you'll find but well worth it.

Tester notes: From ease of setup to comfort and support to overall sleep quality, this mattress received high scores from recent testers in all areas. Several noted that they felt supported no matter what side they were on or the position they were in. "The bed doesn’t move much which is nice," says one tester. "It won’t shake the frame or anything and since the top isn’t super firm but also not too soft, if someone’s on top of you your body sinks in just a little bit and definitely stays cool enough for those who run warm.”

While memory foam may not always be the best choice for sex, especially mattresses that feel too sink-in soft, our pros like this model from Purple. It features a GelFlex Grid elastic top layer that not only allows for extra airflow and ventilation but manages to feel bouncy and responsive all while cradling pressure points. This version is one of the more affordable from Purple, but we also recommend this hybrid variation that features individual coils for even more support, bounce and airflow.

Tester notes: Most testers remarked that the Purple mattress was noticeably cooler than other beds they've owned, with some even claiming it felt too cool in the winter. Others rave about its perfect combination of soft and firm. One GH editor loves that the mattress has enough support and bounce so you never feel like you're sinking into it.

If you want a bouncy yet resilient mattress, look no further than this Good Housekeeping Seal holder that's constructed with latex. As a latex hybrid, this mattress stands out for its supportive, breathable feel. You won't sink in like you would with memory foam, but it still offers cushioning that some testers describe as a "floating" feel . Just keep in mind that it's on the firmer side, and it costs extra for medium or soft firmness feels. Nevertheless, our pros appreciate that it's made from certified organic materials (GOTS and GOLS-certified) as well as the gracious year-long return policy.

Tester notes: Users found that this mattress kept their body weight evenly distributed and loved sleeping on it. On top of excellent customer service, they appreciate its organic construction and claim that it's worth the cost. "I like that it's made of organic and natural materials, that it's extremely comfortable and that it's held up even after years," says one tester.

READ OUR FULL REVIEW: Avocado's Green Mattress is the Best Organic Mattress on the Market

The Bear Elite Hybrid hits that sweet spot as a hybrid mattress that combines all the benefits of memory foam with innersprings . Unlike other boxed mattresses, it has reinforced edge support and is a tester favorite for its comfort. It's made with layers of foam and coils and features five zoned sections to promote proper spinal alignment as well as provide precise cushioning around the hips and back. Our pros do warn that the brand claims to use eco-friendly materials to promote recovery, but we couldn't verify those claims in our research.

Tester notes: Testers have described this Bear mattress as "nothing short of amazing" thanks to its exceptional comfort and support. Many note that it even improved sleep quality over time. "It is the most comfortable mattress we have ever slept on," said one tester.

While you may not have heard of this brand in the U.S., it's widely known throughout Europe and slowly growing its presence in the States. Our sleep experts previously reviewed the Emma CliMax Hybrid, a mattress designed for sex, plus-size bodies and cooling. The Hybrid Comfort is the brand's latest version and an excellent choice for heavy people or anyone who prefers a firm mattress as well as couples who need motion isolation. It combines coil and foam for maximum support, topped with a moisture-wicking top cover to help you stay cool. Our pros like that a free one-year trial is included, as well as all shipping and returns.

Tester notes: Testers of a similar model raved about the mattress's comfort and support, as well as how it didn't require any breaking-in. "This bed was just as comfortable, if not more comfortable," one tester says, who compared the Emma CliMax Hybrid to an expensive luxury model.

A good mattress for sex should have some bounce to it, which is why the WinkBed earns a spot on our list. Despite being a hybrid, this pick has the responsiveness and bounce of a traditional innerspring according to our product analysts . It's also on the taller side for a standard-height mattress and has solid edge support. We also like that each purchase comes packed in a box and includes a 120-day trial to make sure you're satisfied, and there are four firmness levels to choose from.

Tester notes: Testers of WinkBed mattresses agree that the bed felt bouncy as well as conforming to the body. "It had ample bounce and it felt uniformly supportive under my body," one tester says. Some do mention that the bed felt hot when sleeping on their backs.

How we test mattresses

best mattress saatva mattress testing at good housekeeping

For decades, the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab has evaluated mattresses for every preference, style and activity. To narrow down the best mattress for sex, our analysts researched popular brands and mattress materials, then product experts and at-home testers tried them out for firsthand feedback. To gain additional insight, we surveyed our consumer tester panel on the mattresses they already own. In recent years, we've surveyed over 10,000 mattress owners and reviewed answers to more than 170,000 questions before making our picks. Here's what we consider during our reviews:

✔️ Ease of ordering and delivery: Users share their experiences buying a mattress and having it delivered, noting whether there were any issues during this process and whether they were resolved.

✔️ Ease of set-up: Users describe whether the process of setting up the mattress went smoothly, whether DIY or through a delivery service. This feedback includes if the mattress took shape quickly.

✔️ Comfort and support: We ask testers to provide scores for comfort, support and satisfaction at the start of their review as well as over an extended period of time.

✔️ Temperature: Because certain materials, like soft memory foam, are notorious for retaining heat, our pros inquire whether users retained a comfortable body temperature throughout the night. We also check whether users noticed any cooling claims made by brands.

✔️ Perceived sleep quality: Respondents share whether the mattress affected their sleep quality, as well as whether or not they felt sore. We also give them the opportunity to compare their current model to ones they've used in the past.

✔️ Firmness rating: We ask users to share their opinion on the mattress's firmness level and whether it felt the way the brand claimed it would in real life.

✔️ Edge support: Testers rate whether or not the edges of the bed sink in under their weight, like when sitting on the perimeter. Though brands may claim their mattresses offer edge support, sometimes users don't feel it.

✔️ Additional feedback: Testers and panel respondents share any likes, dislikes and further comments at the end of the survey about their experience with the mattress.

What to look for when shopping for a mattress for sex

line break

✔️ Bounce and responsiveness: A mattress for sex should have the right amount of bounce and responsiveness, and you'll find this feature in many of our top picks above. A responsive mattress allows for easy movement if desired and extra bounce contributes to the experience, whereas you may find it difficult to move in a mattress that is too sink-in soft.

✔️ Noise: Ideally, you’ll want to find a mattress with minimal noise. For innerspring mattresses and hybrids, look for those with pocketed coils. A quilted top may also help dampen noise from movement, but if the fabric on the top of your mattress makes noises as you move, consider getting a mattress pad or mattress protector. If your mattress doesn’t feel stable or if you find it too squeaky, it may be your bed frame or bed base. If your bed frame has slats, make sure they’re not too far apart. Otherwise, Thuma’s The Bed is the most stable bed frame our experts have tested and an excellent choice for sexual activity.

✔️ Edge support: This is typically an important factor to consider for anyone with mobility issues as many users will rely on a mattress's edges to get in and out of bed (ones that are too soft make it more difficult). It's also important for those who like to sleep (or lie) closer to the edge. While edge support isn't necessary for a mattress for sex, it's a factor to consider as you'll want ample support for more than purely sleeping.

✔️ Temperature regulation: Hot sleepers or those who overheat (especially during sex) should seek out a mattress with inherent breathability or cooling technology.

What type of mattress is best for sex?

line break

According to our bedding experts, traditional innerspring or latex hybrid mattresses are often favored for sex as they're more bouncy and resilient compared to the sink-in feel of memory foam mattresses. This bounce and support makes them versatile, but our pros note that foam hybrids are also a great choice.

Which mattress firmness is best for sex?

line break

The right firmness for you is a question of personal preference. For those who are unsure, we recommend finding a mattress firmness that falls somewhere in the middle (not too soft, not too firm). This is the most versatile option for a variety of positions while sleeping or otherwise.

Keep in mind when shopping that innerspring and latex hybrid mattresses tend to have a firmer feel, which may feel more “solid” or “stable” to some. These mattresses also come in medium and soft variations if preferred. When thinking about the right firmness to choose, our experts also advise factoring in your favorite sleep position and body type since you'll also be sleeping on your mattress over time and its firmness level is essential to its overall comfort.

Bread and bagels at The Works Cafe in downtown Portland. Photo by Aimsel Ponti

From New York-style boiled bagels to Montreal-inspired wood-fired ones, there’s lots of great bagels in southern Maine and several shops have the accolades to back that up.

In 2023, Bon Appetit named bagels from Rose Foods and Rover Bagel among the best in the country.

Two years before that,  Food & Wine Magazine put Rover, Forage and Scratch Baking Co. on its list of best bagels in the U.S.

Whether you like yours toasted with cream cheese or as the bread for your breakfast sandwich, you can find plenty of styles and flavors from Biddeford to Brunswick.

BEACH BAGELS

The offerings at Beach Bagels include a French toast and marble bagel, and the cream cheese menu comprises spreads like strawberry, olive and honey walnut. Along with breakfast sandwiches, Beach Bagels has hearty breakfast options like omelets and pancakes. Best of all, you’re steps away from a beach stroll. Just don’t let the seagulls steal your bagel. WHEN: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily WHERE: 34 Old Orchard St., Old Orchard Beach. beachbagels.yolasite.com ______________

Dutchman’s opened in 2022 as a pop-up housed at Nomad pizza in Brunswick’s Fort Andross building. It’s since become a permanent fixture there and uses the pizzeria’s wood-fired ovens to bake its bagels. The hand-shaped, honey-boiled bagels come in plain, roasted garlic, poppy and a bagel-of-the-day flavor.

WHEN: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday to Sunday WHERE: Fort Andross, 14 Maine St., Brunswick. dutchmans.me ______________

FORAGE MARKET

Making bagels at Forage Market involves a two-day aging process. The bagels are naturally leavened with wild yeast starter and baked next to a hardwood fire. There are usually five flavors available, including sesame and garlic. Breakfast sandwiches (including vegan options) are available. Forage also has a location in Lewiston. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday WHERE: 123 Washington Ave., Portland. foragemarket.com _____________

MISTER BAGEL

There are 10 or so Mister Bagel locations in Maine, including South Portland and Falmouth. It all began with the Portland location, which was the first bagel shop to open in Maine. The late Rick Hartglass started Mister Bagel in 1977, and it is still a family business. Music fans will appreciate the breakfast sandwich menu, which includes The David Bowie (bacon, egg and American cheese), the Jimmy Buffett (egg with roast beef and cheddar) and The Lady Gaga (avocado, salt and pepper, with or without egg).

WHEN: 6:30 a.m. to noon Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday WHERE: 599 Forest Ave., Portland. misterbagelforestave.com ______________

At Rose Foods, the menu varies depending on the day, but there are usually six to eight flavors available. For example, should you pop in on a Friday, you’ll find a poppy and onion bialy (a cousin of the bagel that is not boiled). Rose Foods also makes a number of bagel sandwiches, including the Classic Nova with Nova lox and the Classic Whitefish. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily WHERE: 428 Forest Ave., Portland. rosefoods.me

______________

ROVER BAGEL

At Rover Bagel, you’ll find wood-fired plain, poppy, sea salt, sesame and everything bagels available most of the time, and the spread game here is strong with cream cheese options like lemon-thyme-honey cream and chili-garlic.

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon Sunday WHERE: 10 West Point Lane Suite 10-204, Biddeford (Pepperell Mill). roverbagel.com

SCRATCH BAKING CO.

You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the line of devoted fans waiting for Scratch Baking Co. to open, especially on weekend mornings. Along with the popular Maine sea salt, plain and other everyday flavors, Scratch has a daily special bagel. There’s honeyed rosemary on Wednesday and jalapeno cheddar on Thursday. Scratch is also famous, at least to locals, for its P-Cheese spread. It’s a pimento cheese recipe made with cheddar, mayo, roasted red peppers and seasoning and was passed down to co-owner and head baker Allison Reid by her grandmother, Mern.

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon Sunday WHERE: 416 Preble St., South Portland. scratchbakingco.com ___________

THE MAINE BAGEL

The Maine Bagel is a drive-thru with several breakfast and other kinds of sandwiches available. With a bagel list that features egg and bialy among the standards, the family-owned spot is the perfect place to stop on your way to Pine Point Beach. The Maine Bagel really shines with a dozen kinds of cream cheese spreads, including raisin-walnut, lox, strawberry, cranberry-nut and bacon-chive.

WHEN: 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. WHERE: 117 Route 1, Scarborough. themainebagel.com Advertisement

THE WORKS CAFE

The Works Cafe is an institution on the edge of the Portland’s Old Port. It opened in 1990 as Bagel Works before it changed its name in 2002. The original shop in this regional chain opened in Manchester, Vermont, in 1988, and there are 11 locations around New England, though just the one in Maine. Gone are the ’90s-era banana-walnut bagels and cold pizza cream cheese, but The Works Cafe is still a reliable place to grab a salt, multigrain or cinnamon raisin bagel, among others. The menu also has bowls, sandwiches and smoothies.

WHEN: 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily WHERE: 15 Temple St., Portland. workscafe.com

A Summer Capsule Wardrobe Will Simplify Your Packing Process

By Meaghan Kenny

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Finding reliable clothing staples to rewear again and again helps us all to become more sustainable travelers—and refrain from overpacking. When building a summer travel capsule wardrobe, versatile and comfortable basics are key: Rather than packing a suitcase full of trendy items or statement outfits you'll only wear once, consider investing in basics you can pair with several outfits and wear from day to night. To lay the foundation, we've put together a list of top summer wardrobe essentials, whether you’re headed to a beach vacation in Mexico or are planning to eat your way through Italy . No matter where your upcoming travel plans take you, these are the pieces you’ll be glad you packed. From crisp white button-downs and lightweight linen dresses to walking sandals and packable beach totes, you can count on them to keep your packing list short and your outfit options long.

Below, 13 pieces to build a summer travel capsule wardrobe, with men's and women's styles from brands we love: Everlane, Lululemon, Banana Republic, and more. Keep scrolling to see them all or jump right to your item of choice.

Build your summer capsule wardrobe:

The breathable tank top, the perfect short, the linen pant, the classic button-down, the basic tee, the midi dress, the midi skirt, the exercise dress, the white sneaker, the walking sandal, the comfortable heel, the quality bathing suit, the packable tote.

Hot summer days mean you’ll need a few basic tanks. Ribbed tank tops are always a smart choice—they're both comfortable and flattering. If you want something that looks a little more put together with a pair shorts or a midi skirt, I wear this seamless bodysuit from Amazon constantly (it’s double-lined and I own it in multiple colors). Nike and Lululemon make some of our favorite performance tanks for men—they’re available in a variety of colors, too.

trip outfits for winter

Finding a trusted pair of shorts can feel nearly impossible. We chose options that aren’t too short, so you can avoid unwanted chafing while still keeping cool. High-waisted, light wash options are ideal for hot summer days and pair well with just about any top in your suitcase.

trip outfits for winter

For something a little more breezy, opt for a pair of linen pants. Whether I'm headed to a barbecue or lunch by the pool, I'm always gravitating toward linen in the warmer months. Lightweight, packable, and chic—it's the ultimate summer pant.

trip outfits for winter

Every traveler needs a go-to tee . A basic T-shirt pairs well with almost any pair of shorts, linen pants, or skirt you pack this summer (sometimes I even throw one underneath a sleeveless dress). Cotton tees from Everlane, Skims, True Classic, and Cuts are breathable and lightweight, making them year-round staples for every type of packing list . No matter where I'm headed, whether it's a beach trip in Miami or a cabin getaway in Vermont, I have at least two comfy tees in my weekender .

trip outfits for winter

Along with a plain white tee, I never travel without a button-down —I wear these with denim, as a cover-up by the pool , or over a slip dress at night if it gets a little chilly. For something ultra lightweight, a linen button-down will keep you cool and covered.

trip outfits for winter

One of the most fun items to pack for summer: midi dresses . Staple pieces like this rib tank dress from Buck Mason and Abercrombie's linen blend dress are always smart options, but for something with a little more flare, I’m eyeing colorful picks from Lulus, Farm Rio, and Banana Republic. Whether you’re headed to a dinner party or want to explore a new city in style, these dresses scream summer and are easy to throw on with any pair of sandals.

trip outfits for winter

Equally elegant and comfortable, a midi skirt can be dressed up or down with a pair of low heels, sneakers, or sandals. A skirt like this elevates an otherwise simple look and can be reworn endlessly throughout a trip with any of your favorite tanks, tees, or blouses. We love these chic styles from Free People, Banana Republic, and Cuyana, but for something under $40, Amazon brand The Drop's high-waisted skirt is a great staple.

Image may contain: Clothing, Dress, Adult, Person, Accessories, Jewelry, Necklace, Fashion, Footwear, Shoe, and Beachwear

Ideal for active travelers and especially hot destinations, exercise dresses are supportive enough for hikes and workout classes, while doubling as a cute daytime outfit. I don't always work out on a trip, but when I do, a sporty yet feminine exercise dress is the way to go—I'll wear one for a morning walk and still feel put together enough for breakfast at the hotel and whatever comes next. For practicality and comfort, I love ones that have built-in shorts underneath, like the Outdoor Voices style.

Image may contain: Clothing, Tank Top, Dress, and Vest

When it comes to essential shoes, every traveler needs a crisp pair of white sneakers . It’s always my most-worn shoe on every trip, especially when there’s a walking tour on the itinerary. Some of our team's favorite comfortable white sneakers come from Nike, Lululemon, and Adidas, with men’s and women’s sizes available for each.

trip outfits for winter

Summer sandals can be a tricky shoe to purchase: You want a pair that can withstand a good amount of walking without causing blisters, but that still leaves you looking put together. These options below from Rothy's, Olukai, Birkenstock, and Teva can take you from the pool to lunch to sightseeing around town. Comfortable, versatile, and packable, a good walking sandal is simply a must.

trip outfits for winter

For those summer nights when you need something a little more elevated than your favorite pair of sandals, a comfortable heel is a must-have. Black, ivory, or nude heels match just about any midi dress you toss in your carry-on . The height of these heels is just right—high enough to wear to any destination weddings or special events you're attending, but low enough to actually dance the night away in. Bonus points for block heels and mules—both styles are easier to walk in and provide decent stability on uneven ground.

trip outfits for winter

No matter where I’m headed—beach vacation or not—I always pack a bathing suit . You can't go wrong with a supportive one-piece or high-waisted set. Some of our favorite men's swim trunks are from Todd Snyder and Lacoste, but we have plenty more options where that came from.

trip outfits for winter

A packable tote bag that you can bring to the beach, shopping, or to the hotel pool will always come in handy. When I'm low on suitcase space, I prefer one that can lay completely flat—like Rothy's Lightweight Tote. These roomy, beachy bags all fit a day's worth of essentials, including a beach towel , water bottle, and lots of sunscreen .
