First Look | Star Trek: Prodigy - Season 2, Episode 1

Admiral Janeway is about to take the former crew of the U.S.S. Protostar under her wing on a real Starfleet ship!

Star Trek: Prodigy  creators Kevin and Dan Hageman revealed an extended first look at the second season's premiere episode this weekend.

Commenting on the exclusive clip, the Hagemans shared, "Our talented and dedicated  Star Trek: Prodigy  team is hard at work on Season 2 and all of us can’t wait for the world to see it. It’s just too good.”

In the clip, the former crew of the  U.S.S. Protostar  and now warrant Starfleet officers in training — Dal, Rok-Tak, Zero, Jankom Pog, and Murf — are reunited for an internship under the command of Admiral Janeway. They soon meet The Doctor, a dear friend of Janeway, who escorts them to the admiral's new ship. Starfleet has asked Janeway to observe a new wormhole to deem if it poses a threat — the very wormhole they created when they self-destructed the  Protostar .

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 is available to stream on Netflix outside of markets including Canada where it is available on CTV.ca and the CTV App, France on France Televisions channels and Okoo, in Iceland on Sjonvarp Simans Premium, as well as on SkyShowtime in the Nordics, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Central and Eastern Europe. Star Trek: Prodigy is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Star Trek: Prodigy Creators Share Their Hopes for More After Season 2: 'Netflix Has Reach'

"will the people watch if they do, there should be life after season 2.”.

Ryan Leston

Star Trek: Prodigy  creators Dan and Kevin Hageman are more excited than ever about their animated Star Trek series.

After debuting on Paramount+ in 2021, the show has  beamed over to Netflix , and this could mean there’s an opportunity to make even more, taking the show beyond its current two seasons.

“Let’s all hope and pray!” Ken said in an interview with IGN . “Netflix has reach, it’s gonna reach people. Will the people watch? If they do, there should be life after Season 2.”

It’s no secret that Star Trek: Prodigy was  removed from Paramount+  earlier this year. Thankfully, it soon found a home on Netflix, and the still unreleased second season will be coming to the streaming service sometime in 2024. But the Hageman’s are hoping it’ll go beyond those two seasons… and might even get a movie.

“Kevin likes to talk about The Original Series getting canceled but then coming back with a fury and making movies,” said Dan. “Kevin and I have always been very excited about that possibility.”

“Great movie franchise,” added Kevin. “But maybe it needs an animated film franchise. I know they’re struggling doing the live-action Star Trek movies. Well heck, throw us a portion of that money and we’ll start doing an animated one.”

“Yeah, throw us the catering bill,” laughed Dan.

“We’ll bring Captain Kirk back!” added Kevin with a grin.

Hope for the crew of the Protostar

Whether or not Prodigy gets its own movie, it looks as though there’s hope that the crew of the Protostar will get to further explore the Star Trek universe beyond its second season. And that’s encouraging for the fans who backed the show when it was  originally pulled from Paramount+ .

“Robert Picardo, The Doctor, is coming for Season 2,” said Dan. “I think we teased the Voyager, too. The first season was the kids on the Protostar – Season 2 they’re going to be involved with a much bigger ship. That’s really going to change the type of adventures they go on. It’s the same show, just a lot bigger.”

“When you watch all 40 episodes of Season 1 and Season 2 together, it’s going to feel like one epic saga,” added Kevin.

“Season 1 they steal a ship,” said Dan. “Season 2 they earn a ship.”

“Yeah, they’re going to earn it this time,” added Kevin.

As well as continuing their own show, the Hagemans also hope to see more Star Trek animation in the future… and as a huge fan of Lower Decks, that’s definitely something I can get behind.

Season 1 they steal a ship. Season 2 they earn a ship.

“I really love Star Trek Animation,” said Kevin. “I swear, we’re finishing out Season 2 and I’m constantly staring at the amazing work our crew has done animating these characters and some of them, which we can’t spoil… but there are other legacy characters that are going to be coming in and stuff, and you’re watching, and it’s an animated version of them, but it’s there voice and, it just feels so good to keep these characters and this universe alive in animated form.”

“I think what Alex [Kurtzman] has done great about the Star Trek universe is that every show has its own feel, everything feels different,” added Dan. “I love them taking stabs, so if they do another animation show, I hope it doesn’t look like Prodigy. I would hope it looks like something completely different because I like them taking as many stabs as possible.”

“I would love to see a 2D anime Star Trek,” said Kevin. “It would be amazing if done really respectfully, it would be amazing.”

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - What We Know So Far

Dal looking excited

"Star Trek: Prodigy" is the latest in a long line of excellent "Star Trek" shows, and a markedly different animated take on the sci-fi franchise than the comedic " Star Trek: Lower Decks ." It's also the first major "Star Trek" show that focuses on a bunch of complete space voyage amateurs, who stumble upon a mysterious Starfleet ship called U.S.S. Protostar, and use it to escape their less than ideal living conditions as miners on Tars Lamora.

Due to the fact that the show begins in the incredibly distant and dangerous Delta Quadrant of the galaxy, the early episodes of "Prodigy" have plenty of world-building to do for a "Star Trek" show, and it'll be interesting to see how the show progresses over the course of multiple seasons. Of course, in order to do that, the show actually needs to have more than one season. Will "Star Trek: Prodigy" become a multi-season phenomenon, or is it destined to remain a one-season wonder? Here's what we know about Season 2 of "Star Trek: Prodigy."

What's the release date of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2?

" Star Trek: Prodigy " will indeed get a second season, and what's more, it might arrive sooner than you think. The first season's mid-season finale is only beginning to loom on the horizon, but its numbers have been impressive enough that Paramount+ has already confirmed Season 2 is incoming, according to Deadline . This, of course, is a pretty tantalizing prospect for Trekkies who don't like to wait for too long between seasons.

Considering that the Season 1 mid-season finale airs on November 18, and the back half of the ten-episode season starts airing on January 6, 2022, The season won't end until February 2022. Since Season 2 will reportedly drop at some point in 2022, this means fans should have far less than a year to wait for it.

It's highly unlikely that the seasons will air back to back, so you probably shouldn't expect "Star Trek: Prodigy" Season 2 before summer 2022 at the very earliest. If Paramount+ intends to follow the first season's evidently successful footprints, it would make sense to air the season premiere at roughly the same time of year. As such, the most logical release date of the new season would be in October 2022.

Who's in the cast of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2?

We still don't know which characters survive the events of "Star Trek: Prodigy" Season 1, or whether someone jumps ship to explore a particularly interesting planet. As it stands, though, it's pretty easy to wager that Brett Gray's Dal R'EI is the lynchpin of the series going forward, thanks to his role as the closest thing the U.S.S. Protostar has to a captain, and his mysterious origins. Ella Purnell's Vau N'Akat youngster, Gwyn, also seems like she'll be around for a while, which means that his father, the evil Diviner (voiced by John Noble), might also continue to grace the show with his devious attempts to capture the main characters' mysterious starship with the fearsome Drednok (Jimmi Simpson).

Though it's always possible that the first season will feature a tragic death or departure, it would also be pretty surprising if Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazragui), Zero (Angus Imrie), Jankom Pog (Jason Mantzoukas), and Murf (Dee Bradley Baker) wouldn't be around in Season 2. As with Season 1, you can probably expect so see plenty of high-profile celebrities in fun recurring or guest roles, as well.

One of the greatest characters in "Star Trek: Prodigy" is, of course, the hologram version of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), the main character of "Star Trek: Voyager." The AI version of the character is a snarky, yet ever-present and helpful mentor figure to the main characters, which is great ... but also somewhat worrying, considering the fate such characters tend to suffer as the story progresses, and as the heroes learn to get by on their own. Hopefully, Hologram Janeway "lives" to see Season 2, but don't be surprised if this doesn't turn out to be the case.

What's the plot of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2?

Since Season 1 is still ongoing, there's no way to know where the sophomore season of "Star Trek: Prodigy" intends to take things. Provided that the show doesn't plan to deviate from its premise too much, it's probably safe to say that the U.S.S. Protostar will continue its turbulent journey from the remote  Delta Quadrant to  Alpha Quadrant . Since the majority of the most famous "Star Trek" civilizations hang around in the Alpha and Beta quadrants, it's likely that the motley crew of main characters will run into more and more familiar faces as their journey progresses — think humans, Romulans, Klingons, and the like.

Due to the show's concept of starting where no man has gone before and boldly working the way back, you can probably expect the characters to bump into plenty of classic "Star Trek" civilizations as their journey progresses.

Star Trek just changed timeline canon, and it could affect Picard Season 2

The Hageman brothers confirm where and when the voyages of the Protostar are happening within the larger Star Trek canon.

star trek protostar season 2

The Prodigy universe just got a whole lot bigger. In the mid-season finale, “A Moral Star, Part 2,” the wayward crew of the USS Protostar learned a lot about how, and why, everyone arrived at this exact point in time. Those revelations, combined with a last-second return of another famous Star Trek character, might have you wondering how this all fits in with the larger timeline. Here’s what we know, plus some timeline clarifications from Star Trek: Prodigy showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman .

Prodigy’s time travel twist

Star Trek Prodigy

The Diviner reveals the true purpose of his mission.

It turns out Gywn’s father, the villainous and single-minded Diviner of the alien species known as the Vau N’Akat, is a time traveler. Up until now, Prodigy has suggested that Gywn (Ella Purnell) and the Diviner (John Noble) are the last of their species, and that the planet Solum is unpopulated. However, in “A Moral Star Part 2,” we learn the Diviner actually traveled back in time over 50 years from the future to prevent Starfleet from making First Contact with Solum in the first place.

When you add 50 years to Prodigy’s spot in the timeline, 2383, that means their true point of origin is the year 2433. When reached for comment, the Hagemans confirmed that this figure “sounds about right,” and that the Diviner’s origin does extend well beyond the events of Picard Season 1, which takes place in 2399. The Hagemans also added that the audience hasn’t seen everything about how the Protostar got to Tars Lamora.

“Though the backstory revealed in episode 10 may not fill in all the holes — those holes won’t be left empty,” they promised. When pressed on whether future episodes will involve more time travel twists, the showrunners said “Our future selves have written us a note not to comment.”

Star Trek Prodigy

Admiral Janeway, aboard the USS Dauntless , on her way to find a missing ship.

Admiral Janeway’s return

In what almost feels like a post-credits scene, the final moments of “A Moral Star Part 2” reveal that Starfleet is indeed tracking the USS Protostar , and the person searching for the ship is none other than Admiral Janeway herself! Like Hologram Janeway, this character is voiced by Kate Mulgrew , but this Janeway is the original.

In the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis it was revealed that Janeway had been promoted to Admiral by the year 2379, and thus was actually giving Captain Picard orders. Prodigy only takes place a few years after that, in 2383. The Hagemans also confirmed that this Janeway is in the same time period as the crew of the Protostar , and that she’s not involved in any time travel shenanigans herself. Here’s what they said when asked directly about where and when Admiral Janeway is in this episode:

“Though there is a bit of time travel involved in getting the Protostar to Tars Lamora, Admiral Janeway is indeed in the Prodigy crew’s timeline — The Prime Universe, approximately 2383.”

The exact nature of how the Protostar got to Tars Lamora has yet to be revealed, but for now the timeline shakes out something like this:

  • 2366: This is the year the Diviner travels back to from his point of origin in 2433. He clones himself and Gywn is created.
  • Between 2366 and 2383: The Protostar is somehow sent back in time to Tars Lamora from its point of origin around the 2380s.
  • 2383: The primary setting for the events of Prodigy.
  • 2 433 (roughly): A point in the future after Starfleet has made First Contact with the Vau N’Akat on the planet Solum. It’s from this time the Diviner traveled.

Star Trek Picard

Patrick Stewart in Season 2 of Picard .

Prodigy’s impact on Picard

While the events of Prodigy seemed self-contained, all the new timeline revelations have opened up the series to the rest of Trek canon. Admiral Janeway and the crew of the USS Dauntless are rocking Lower Decks -style Starfleet uniforms, which makes sense within the context of 2383 since Lower Decks is set in 2381.

But the more interesting detail is how the future point of origin might impact Picard Season 2 and Season 3. We know Picard Season 2 will deal with some time travel to 2024, but how far that series will play out into the 25th century isn’t clear. Picard Season 2 showrunner Terry Matalas has said , “To me, Star Trek: Picard is the present day of Star Trek,” and has implied stories in that time period, around the early 25th century, could continue even after Picard Season 3 ends.

So if Picard Season 3 does spend more time in the early 2400s, we now have at least one event that will occur in that future. At some point, Starfleet will roll up to the planet Solum in the 2430s, and when they do, it’s going to retroactively cause a lot of problems for Admiral Janeway in the 2380s.

Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming now on Paramount+.

10 Star Trek: Prodigy Things To Know Before Season 2

  • Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 takes place in 2383 and 2384, right after USS Voyager's return to the Alpha Quadrant.
  • The crew of the USS Protostar, led by Dal, includes Gwyndala, Jankom Pog, Medusan Zero, Rok-Tahk, and Murf.
  • The season finale sees Hologram Janeway sacrificing herself to destroy the living construct and save Starfleet, while Gwyn embarks on a mission to prevent a civil war on the Vau N'Akat homeworld.

Refresh your memory with ten things to know about Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 that will be important to remember before Prodigy season 2 drops on Netflix in 2024. It's been a while since Star Trek: Prodigy has been available to stream, since Prodigy was pulled from Paramount+ in July 2023, but all 20 episodes of Prodigy season 1 are available on Netflix starting Christmas Day 2023 . While there will most likely be plenty of time to binge Prodigy season 1, some key plot points are worth refreshing, starting with Prodigy 's cast of characters .

Star Trek: Prodigy stars six Delta Quadrant kids who hadn't heard of the United Federation of Planets before discovering the USS Protostar and its onboard guide, Hologram Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). Dal R'El (Brett Gray) names himself captain before growing into the role. Gwyndala (Ella Purnell) is a linguist, and daughter of the Diviner (John Noble), Prodigy 's antagonist. Chief engineer Jankom Pog (Jason Mantzoukas) was revived from a Tellarite sleeper ship. Medusan Zero (Angus Imrie), Brikar science officer Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazraqui), and Mellanoid slime worm Murf (Dee Bradley Baker) round out the crew.

Everything We Know About Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

Star trek: prodigy takes place in 2383 & 2384, after lower decks (2380-2381), but before picard (2399-2401).

Star Trek: Prodigy plays around with time travel, but Prodigy season 1's primary action takes place in 2383 and 2834 , with Prodigy season 2 in 2385. For context, Prodigy starts only 5 years after the USS Voyager's return to the Alpha Quadrant, after which Janeway was promoted to vice admiral and worked a desk job before she took command of the USS Dauntless. It's just a few years after Star Trek: Lower Decks in 2381, but close to the 2387 Romulan supernova , and the beginning of Star Trek: Picard in 2399 is still 16 years away. Prodigy 's future inflection point is 50 years after its present, with both the Diviner's origin and Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran) potentially lost in the 2430s.

The USS Protostar Crew Liberated Tars Lamora

"a moral star" was their first big test.

By the mid-season finale of Star Trek: Prodigy , Dal's character has made a proto-jump in the right direction , with his astonishingly selfless choice to help those left on Tars Lamora instead of running away again. It's a risky call that puts the Protostar in danger, but it's the right thing to do. The Diviner's double-cross means things go wrong, so Dal trusts in the strengths that his crewmembers discovered to execute his "crazy plan": Murf hides the proto-drive, Jankom and Rok work on the engines, and Zero reprograms shackles into translators. Not only does it work, but it proves they've all grown, and can pass newfound hope on to others.

The Diviner Wanted Vengeance on Starfleet

Starfleet first contact incited the vau n'akat civil war.

In the Diviner's future, homeworld of Solum had been torn apart by a bitter civil war incited by First Contact with Starfleet , after half the Vau N'Akat welcomed the Federation with open arms and the other half fought to preserve the Vau N'Akat way of life. The Diviner believed he could save the Vau N'Akat by preventing the Federation from ever landing on Solum in the first place with the living construct, a weapon integrated with the Protostar designed to turn Starfleet against each other by corrupting their computer systems. The Diviner was sent into the past to recover the Protostar, but died before he could complete his mission, and passed the responsibility to Gwyndala, his progeny.

The Protostar was Chakotay's Ship

Captain chakotay was lost in time.

After the development of the proto-warp drive allowed for quadrant-spanning proto-jumps through space, Captain Chakotay's USS Protostar mission intended to correct the mistakes Voyager made in the Delta Quadrant on its way back home. That mission was cut short when an encounter with a temporal anomaly dropped Chakotay's Protostar 50 years in the future on the Vau N'Akat planet Solum . Vau N'Akat blamed the Federation for their war and installed the living construct, but Chakotay remotely sent the Protostar back through time without a crew, so the weapon couldn't be used against Starfleet. Now, Admiral Janeway is determined to figure out what happened and find Chakotay.

Dal is Genetically Engineered

Janeway argued that dal wasn't augmented.

Dal always wondered where he came from, and at Noble Isle in the Romulan Neutral Zone, the question of Dal's origin was finally answered. DNA analysis revealed that Dal is a genetically engineered hybrid created by the protégés of 22nd-century geneticist Arik Soong (Brent Spiner), with the genetic material of 26 total alien species compiled over a human base. Starfleet Command refused to let Dal enroll in the Academy on account of being an Augment, but Janeway argued that a hybrid is different. Dal is an experiment, but not enhanced, and his genetic makeup represents the whole Federation in one being. Starfleet remained skeptical but allowed Dal to be mentored by Janeway.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 1, episode 15 "Masquerade" specifically points out that Dal's DNA contains human, Vulcan, Andorian, and Tellarite: the founding members of the Federation. There's Klingon in Dal too, but maybe Janeway's not so far off.

Ensign Asencia Was Really The Vindicator

The vindicator poses a threat for prodigy season 2.

The Trill navigator of Janeway's Dauntless bridge crew, Ensign Asencia (Jameela Jamil), revealed herself to be the Vindicator, a Vau N'Akat member of The Order from the future, like the Diviner. The Order hoped to locate the Protostar in the past after Chakotay sent the Protostar back to avoid activating the living construct. While the Diviner arrived further in the past, seeking the Protostar on Tars Lamora for years, the Vindicator inserted herself into Starfleet closer to the present, intending to undo Starfleet from within. The living construct was destroyed, but Asencia is still out there , sworn to vengeance against the Federation, making her a threat for Star Trek: Prodigy season 2.

Hologram Janeway Went Down with the Protostar

Destroying the protostar saved starfleet.

Hologram Janeway volunteered to go down with the Protostar, detonating the proto-drive at warp in order to minimize the collateral damage caused by destroying the living construct. When the crew protested, Holo-Janeway offered to upload her program for reinstallation, but the file was too large for an isolinear chip. As a result, Hologram Janeway gave her life to destroy the Construct and save Starfleet . Holo-Janeway's last act was to duplicate the parameters of the wormhole from Chakotay's original mission, so the Protostar's detonation opened a time-space flecture leading to the alternate future where Chakotay is trapped , allowing Starfleet to determine his coordinates and rescue him.

The Protostar Crew Joined Starfleet ... Sort Of

Janeway will mentor dal, zero, jankom pog, rok-tahk, and murf.

The Protostar crew sought out the Federation with hope they could escape their former lives, but when they did arrive at Starfleet Academy after one month's journey, the hope they longed for was in short supply. Dal, Gwyn, and the others were judged for stealing the Protostar, impersonating Starfleet officers, and a laundry list of other offenses. Admiral Janeway stepped in to vouch for the crew's integrity , and while the tribunal dropped the charges, Starfleet didn't think they should be fast-tracked to the Academy. Instead, Janeway will take 5 of them on as warrant officers and her personal protégés on her next mission to the Delta Quadrant.

Gwyn Will Go Home as The Unifier

Vau n'akat first contact hasn't happened yet.

Instead of joining Admiral Janeway on the next mission, Gwyn decided to go to the Vau N'Akat homeworld of Solum, so she could complete the Diviner's mission her own way. Solum hadn't been visited by the Federation yet, so the Vau N'Akat could still be saved . Gwyn reasoned Solum's civil war could be prevented not by ruining the Federation, but by introducing values of unity and acceptance to Solum in preparation for first contact, so there would never be a reason to go to war in the first place. Gwyn promised Dal that she would see him again, so Gwyn is likely to return for Star Trek: Prodigy season 2.

Upon hearing Gwyn's plan, Zero named Gwyn the Unifier, in the Vau N'Akat tradition of titles having purpose.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2's Ship Will Be USS Voyager-A

Expect more voyager cameos in prodigy season 2.

As Star Trek: Voyager 's successor, Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 will call the Larmarr Class USS Voyager-A home after the destruction of the Protostar. Like its predecessor, Voyager-A's mission will be in the Delta Quadrant, but this time it'll be deliberate, with the intention of looking for Chakotay. It's possible that even more nods to Voyager will show up in Prodigy , with characters making cameos or having larger roles. Besides Janeway and Chakotay, Robert Picardo will return as the Doctor, whose EMH program is likely integrated with Voyager-A, and Lt. B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson) was mentioned as the designer of the Dauntless.

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, episode 1, "Twovix", sees the USS Cerritos crew help turn the original USS Voyager into a museum in 2381, three years before Prodigy 's season 1 epilogue in 2384.

After the stunning Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 finale , much more is in store for Dal, Jankom, Rok, Zero, and Murf, under Janeway's tutelage aboard the Voyager-A, as they search for Captain Chakotay. Gwyn has a daunting solo mission ahead of her, returning to a home and people that she hasn't known. Prodigy creators Kevin and Dan Hageman have promised that Prodigy season 2 will tie together every other Star Trek series, not just Star Trek: Voyager , so there truly will be something for Star Trek fans of all ages in Star Trek: Prodigy when it returns.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 streams December 25, 2023 on Netflix. Prodigy season 2 streams in 2024 on Netflix.

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Saved at Netflix; Season 2 to Debut in 2024

Netflix has announced that it will be saving the short-lived Paramount+ series Star Trek: Prodigy, which recently had its second renewal order scrapped. After shopping the project, Netflix has announced it’ll soon be the new streaming home for both season 1 in 2023 and season 2 in 2024.

Aimed at younger audiences, Star Trek: Prodigy is one of many Star Trek shows (or at least was) produced exclusively for Paramount+ and what was then called CBS All Access.

20 episodes of the series have aired thus far, with season 1 being released across two parts. Season 1, part 2, was released on Paramount+ between October 2021 and February 2022, while part 2 dropped weekly between October 2022 and December 2022.

Created by Kevin & Dan Hageman, the 3D animated series followed a motley crew of young aliens finding themselves living aboard an abandoned Starfleet ship. Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Jason Mantzoukas, Angus Imrie, Rylee Alazraqui, Dee Bradley Baker, Jimmi Simpson, John Noble, and Kate Mulgrew lent their voices to the series.

In June 2023, Paramount+ joined other streamers like Disney in purging some of its content from the platform, including the first season of Star Trek: Prodigy . In addition, it reversed the season 2 renewal order. That season was already deep into production, and reports at the time suggested that it would be allowed to be shopped to other networks.

Season 2 will be released exclusively on Netflix in 2024

Fast forward to today, and Netflix has announced it’ll be the new home for both season 1, which will drop in late 2023 (keep an eye on our coming soon section for more), and will also exclusively launch season 2 at some point in 2024.

On October 11th, Netflix Tweeted :

“Star Trek: Prodigy is coming to Netflix! Season 1 of the animated series launches onto Netflix later this year while a brand new Season 2 is slated to debut in 2024”

In a joint statement on Alex Kurtzman’s social pages, they thank the fans of the show and state that “they can’t wait to share it [season 2] with the amazing fans around the world.”

Statement by Alex Kurtzman and Dan & Kevin Hageman on the Star Trek: Prodigy revival

Aaron J. Waltke, a producer and screenwriter on Star Trek: Prodigy , posted shortly following the announcement with the hashtag “WeSavedStarTrekProdigy,” saying:

“At last, we can share the news… Star Trek: Prodigy has landed! Our show is beyond thrilled to be joining NETFLIX for the ongoing adventures of the Protostar crew. Star Trek fans across the galaxy — and young cadets in the making — have been granted the chance to see our series, many for the very first time. With a truly global audience, it is an extraordinary opportunity to grow our already formidable fanbase. It is in no small part thanks to you, the fandom — who demonstrated through your extraordinary efforts that the stories of Starfleet, and the outsiders who aspire to it, will endure. We are so deeply humbled and grateful beyond words. Many on the Prodigy team, including myself and the Hagemans, have created some exceptional television with Netflix — and we very much look forward to doing so again. The possibilities are endless now that the world can see all 40 episodes of Prodigy’s first and second seasons in one place which our passionate cast and crew have worked so tirelessly on – with the potential for more as we boldly go and seek out this new horizon. If you wish to see more Dal and Gwyn and Rok-Tahk and Zero and Jankom and Murf, viewing the show on Netflix as soon as it drops – and telling others the good news, to do the same — is unequivocally the way. There’s not much more to say. Other than… Go fast. Spread the word. Together… …We Saved Star Trek: Prodigy. Set a course for home.”

This is part of a recent strategy shift from Paramount Global, which has been much keener on licensing titles, to places like Netflix. Earlier in 2023, we saw them shop Ripley to Netflix, which was originally due to be released on Showtime. That’s in addition to other licensing, such as Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber being licensed in the US in October 2023 after being yanked from Paramount+.

On the kid’s side, we’ve also seen them license some of its Nickelodeon content to the service in recent years and work on a brand new Original Spongebob movie scheduled for 2024. We also see Nickelodeon titles arrive exclusively on Netflix from the 2019 output deal that includes the Erin & Aaron, slated for a November release .

At one point, Netflix was streaming home to the majority of older Star Trek shows. It had the complete collection of Deep Space Nine , Voyager, Enterprise, The Next Generation , and even The Animated Series for a period of time, but they slowly departed throughout 2021 and into 2022 .

Internationally, Netflix was also the distributor for Star Trek: Discovery until late 2021, when the first three seasons (marked as Netflix Originals) were unceremoniously removed , with all future seasons exclusive to Paramount+.

Are you looking forward to Star Trek: Prodigy being part of Netflix’s lineup? Let us know in the comments below.

“Supernova, Part 2”

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1, Episode 20 – Debuted Thursday, December 29, 2022 Written by Kevin & Dan Hageman Directed by Ben Hibon

An emotionally dense episode masterfully wraps up the first season with a bit more action and a lot more heart.

star trek protostar season 2

Starfleet needed to come up with some new ships anyway, right?

WARNING: Spoilers below!

“We’ve got one shot at this.”

With annihilation of the Starfleet armada imminent as more ships warp in and get infected, the only remaining way to stop the perilous signal dawns on Dal… they have to destroy the Protostar. There is a snag: Blowing up the proto-core would actually wipe out the star system and all the ships in it. However, if they can detonate just as the drive kicks in, they could spread the damage out, saving what’s left of the Starfleet task force. With controls fried, Dal volunteers, but Holo Janeway steps up to take his place. Rok objects in a sweet moment, calling the holo their “friend,” Holo Janeway assures the kids they can just take a copy of her along with them in the quickie shuttle they build with the vehicle replicator. Dal orders the ship to create some distance from the battling fleet as Admiral Janeway looks on, explaining to her beleaguered Dauntless crew how those Protostar kids are “saving us all.” She gets it.

As Jankom preps the proto-drive to go boom, Rok builds a no-frills (and no-seats) shuttle that doesn’t even have navigation, there’s just not enough time to make something more sophisticated, and Holo Janeway can handle the navigation for them when her copy arrives. Unfortunately—and you probably guessed where this was heading—the ETH learns her program no longer fits on an isolinear chip. When Dal arrives to pick up the copy, she bluffs her way through with a quip about how they now have two of her. The kids take a moment to say a difficult goodbye to the USS Protostar, their life-changing home for many months. Rok says just the right thing: “Think of it as letting a young star become what it’s meant to be.” Holo Janeway says farewell for what they don’t realize is the last time, telling them what an honor it has been to serve with them. As their escape craft falls away, they watch as a resigned, resolute Holo Janeway takes command, engages the proto-drive, and with one last smile… orders the ship to “go fast.” She gets it too… or got it… sorry, too soon?

star trek protostar season 2

I’m not crying… you’re crying.

“That crew just saved Starfleet.”

Janeway’s sacrifice sees the exploding USS Protostar streak away, creating something both beautiful and sad. The timing couldn’t be better, as the Klingon ship protecting the USS Dauntless just lost shields and another photon torpedo is about to be fired at them. Thankfully, the Protostar plan worked: Weapons are disengaged and control returns to the fleet. Janeway orders a search party, even if it will take months to find the kids who are just now confused to find that the isolinear chip only has a recording instead of a hologram. In her final message, Holo Janeway apologizes for the deception; her program had just grown too rich and complex to be stored on a little chip. They are crushed, but she explains she did what she had to do so they could fulfill their potential and tells them how proud she is of them all. Even without her to guide them, she’s sure they will figure out how to get back to Starfleet “because together your potential is infinite.” Her only regret is not being there when they arrive on the steps of Starfleet Academy. Still sad, but that’s nice.

One month later, the kids are still MIA as Admiral Janeway is briefed at Starfleet HQ about how her counterpart delivered one last surprise. The Protostar’s destructive path across space-time created a wormhole that duplicated the one that sent Chakotay and his crew into the future, and they’ve picked up a signal sent back through time in which her former first officer briefs Starfleet about how he and his remaining crew were trying to hang on. “He’s alive, and she pointed us in the right direction.” Holo Janeway turned the Protostar’s destruction into a fighting chance to live . The admiral vows to lead the mission to explore the wormhole just as she learns the kids have returned, doing a little Voyage Home homage in San Francisco Bay.

star trek protostar season 2

Do you have any wormholes in green?

“Is there a better living embodiment of what our alliance represents?”

Continuing that theme, the kids face a tribunal for stealing a Starfleet ship and other various offenses, but their defense counsel from the firm of Janeway and Janeway reminds the Starfleet judges the kids did everything in an effort to warn them. The glowering judges are even more skeptical of the idea that the kids could be accepted straight into Starfleet Academy, especially that Augment. Ouch. There are protocols, procedures, tests, and the like… and these kids are (at best) good-intentioned reckless criminals. Janeway digs deep with an impassioned plea, hyping the prodigies’ epic journey to eventually save Starfleet. Their arrival is actually the embodiment of the mission of the Protostar to seek out new life across the galaxy that shared their ideals—and as for Dal, he may be engineered, but he is no attempt at creating an enhanced superbeing, rather he’s mix of the infinite diversity that makes the Federation the Federation. Take that!

The admiral’s argument carries the day, more or less. Charges are dropped, but it’s not fair to let the kids cut the line into the Academy. Bummer. They are overjoyed to learn that in the meantime they have been assigned to the admiral to join her new mission as warrant officers in training… that includes Dal, and even Murf! But it’s only for five; Gwyn breaks the news she will not be joining them as she is taking on a new mission to save the Vau N’Akat and will head to Solum with the help of Starfleet. The kids are sad she isn’t joining but proud to see her new purpose, with Zero dubbing her “Gwyndala the Unifier.” She and Dal finally have the time to share a nice moment—and a proper kiss—as they reflect on the journey that brought them to San Francisco, promising to see each other again. We see the others get help from various Starfleet officers, as Rok gets a science tip on Xenobiology, Jankom bonds with engineers, and Zero is given a fancy new containment suit. After Gwyn departs, the admiral shows her new charges the latest Protostar-class ship, but that’s not actually going to be their new ship and home. She leaves them hanging with the mischievous statement “Oh, I have a much bigger plan for us.”  And that’s a season.

Can the court reporter read back what that Mellanoid Slime Worm just called me?

That’s how you do it

“Supernova, Part 2” is as good as it gets when it comes to season finales. It stands alone as an excellent episode but also ties in well with Part 1 to create an even richer and more deeply emotional experience. Importantly, it ties up the remaining plot and character arcs beautifully while teasing new arcs to come for season 2. This second part had less action than the first, wrapping up the battle action surprisingly quickly. This gave it time for more character exploration, allowing some key moments like the sacrifice of Hologram Janeway to land. Co-creators Dan and Kevin Hageman penned this episode by wearing the strong themes of the series (and Trek) openly: taking tragedy and turning it into hope, and an appeal for inclusivity. Experts in the genre, they never talk down to or manipulate their audience, making all of the resulting emotions feel organic and earned.

Composer Nami Melumad did some of her best work to take the audience on this ride using a beautiful mix of the show’s own themes with some classic stings that included homages to her mentor (and main theme composer) Michael Giacchino. Director and creative lead Ben Hibon was also crucial in creating little moments like the subtle facial animations during Holo Janeway’s extended goodbye, to transforming the destruction of the USS Protostar into something beautiful. Throughout the season, Hibon and his creative team (including the Emmy-winning production designer Allessandro Taini) have created something quite remarkable with cinema-level work on the more limited TV animation budget.

star trek protostar season 2

The Janeway Nebula?

A key to making this finale work was the performance of Kate Mulgrew on double duty with Hologram Janeway’s farewell and Admiral Janeway’s impassioned advocacy for the Protostar crew. Each Janeway has become their own unique character, making the loss of one all the harder. The rest of the crew is also delivering, Rylee Alazraqui is worth highlighting for making us believe this young giant Brikar has a heart of gold and the soul of a poet, finding just the right thing to say at just the right time. Rok-Tahk’s exuberant introduction to xenobiology was the best example of how each of these characters brought closure to their season 1 arcs while setting up the next steps for their journeys.

Things wrapped up nicely for Dal and Gwyn with just the right touch for their romantic subplot. Pog got a bit of love too, showing his percussive engineering has incorporated some finesse. However, Zero continues to be underserved and it isn’t clear where they are going with the character beyond giving them a shiny new Starfleet containment suit. Murf remains a delightful little mystery, but it seems a bit premature for Starfleet to recognize him as a fellow official trainee when it still isn’t clear how mature the evolving little blob is. This is an example of one of those shortcuts the series is forced to take due to the short run time, leaving fans to use headcanon to answer certain questions, like how exactly did they survive and make their way to Earth in that makeshift shuttle… and what were the conditions on board after a month?

star trek protostar season 2

Janeway ponders the air quality of the kids’ shuttle.

Going back… to the future

The season finale was also noteworthy for some of the choices made about what to exclude. While fans love a good guest star pop-in and a classic hero ship moment, it was a good call to leave the heroics to the kids and the Janeways. However, it might have been nice to see Janeway make (and win) her case against Ronny Cox’s Jellico instead of just nameless judges. Also interesting was the choice not to check in on the new big bad, Asencia/The Vindicator, who popped off with Drednok midway through the previous episode. Watched together in a binge, her absence is less noticeable, but a brief moment to show the threat she still poses could have helped maintain the stakes during the extended epilogue.

Speaking of the Vau N’Akat, there was a nice poetry dubbing Gwyn as “The Unifier,” taking over her father The Diviner’s mission to save the people of Solum. The final moments of the episode gave us just enough of a sense of what is to come in season 2 as Gwyn is headed to the present version of Solum to circumvent the disastrous fallout from the original first contact. Hopefully, she has some Starfleet help in what’s clearly a very risky mission. This leaves Admiral Janeway and the rest of the gang on a mission (in a new ship) to the new wormhole and presumably into the (specifically noted as “alternate”) future where Chakotay and what remains of his original Protostar crew are trapped. The weird timey-wimey nature of this dual temporal-pronged trip to Solum will likely make sense once they can do more exposition in season 2. Many questions remain, but they are more fun areas of speculation and not hanging threads… check back with TrekMovie soon as there may be some fun clues in this finale for us to ponder.

star trek protostar season 2

Oh boy, a new ship for us to blow up.

Final thoughts

“Supernova, Part 2” is a triumphant end for a near-perfect introductory season (or volume 2 of the season), a rare finale that wraps up pretty much everything for the serialized plot and characters. By cutting the action a bit short, it allowed time for big character moments and set up the next season without leaving fans hanging off a cliff. Most importantly, it fulfills the promise to take new audiences on a journey starting from scratch all the way to embracing and building on everything that makes Star Trek endure.

star trek protostar season 2

I’ll miss you most of all, you gooey blue thing.

RANDOM BITS

  • Destroying the Protostar was said to create an interspatial flexure , first seen in the Voyager episode “Counterpoint”—an episode also referenced in Part 1 of the finale.
The explosion caused by the destruction of the Protostar was described as having a diameter of 50 million miles, a bit less than the distance between the sun and Venus, although it was said it would destroy the entire star system (Sun to Neptune is 2.8 billion miles).
  • Jankom Pog referred to himself as a “miracle worker,” a term first used for legendary engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott.
  • The Enterprise-E designation could be seen even clearer on nacelles of the Sovereign class models used for the two-part finale, which included one severely damaged ship.
  • The kids’ new Starfleet trainee uniforms were similar in design to the Starfleet uniforms they wore on the Protostar, but with the lighter and darker colors reversed.
  • Gwyn’s heirloom sword integrated into the shoulders of her Starfleet uniform.
  • Gwyn’s “I know” response to Dal saying he didn’t want to see her go could be an homage to Han’s goodbye to Leia in The Empire Strikes Back .
  • Star Trek science advisor Dr. Erin Macdonald provided the voice for Dr. MacDonald (who advised Rok to look into xenobiology).
  • An Enterprizian (from the episode “All the World’s a Stage”) could be seen in the Starfleet HQ science lab.

wow. just wow. what an amazing first season. really love this show. outstanding work.

So, the Voyager A for season 2 then 😉

I’m hoping it’s the second Protostar Class vessel.

I think Janeway said it wouldn’t be the new Protostar class, but I could be wrong

I was hoping the new ship would be Voyager.

Yeah I think most of us are pulling for the Voyager A now!

And since the real Janeway will be leading the show next season, it just makes sense. I liked the Dauntless but it just wasn’t the same as being on Voyager. It would be like having Kirk leading the Excelsior.

There are comics of Kirk commanding Excelsior

A good season finale but very predictable end to the construct story-line. As a whole S1 of prodigy has been enjoyable it wouldn’t be in the top 10 of seasons of Trek to me but it’s been pretty good. Looking forward to S2 and i hope someday we see the kids in a live-action show.

Personally I think that was one of the strongest first seasons of Trek ever put to screen.

I feel like episodes 11-20 it took a bit of a nose dive. Not a critical one, but one that affected the overall quality.

Throughout the second half of the season I found myself thinking I was hearing very clear call outs to Giacchino’s Kelvin scores, it was a nice touch and woven in well!

Yes I noticed that too. The scoring for this show has been absolutely outstanding. Nami Melumad is an incredible talent.

Soo… I guess you missed the fact that we got to see a shuttle of a certain NCC-74656-A? I mean, we are talking about Voyager here….

Hey, good eye! Voyager A would be fun to see.

Voyager, NCC-74656, could still easily be in service. Not this again! I guess hero ships now have 10-year lifespans?

No Federation ships have way longer lifespans. That said, Voyager at this moment is probably sitting on the Presidio like Alt Adm. Janeway said. Before that though all the technology she gathered along with the anti borg enhancements. Were being picked apart by the Starfleet Corp of Engineers. So the commissioning of a new Voyager isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Yeah this would fit in with canon and also Voyager took s beating in those 7 years and was a mashup of technology that it would have made sense to decommission it to make use of a study the delta quadrant technology

Didn’t they establish in one of the episodes, or it may’ve been a log, that Voyager was decommissioned upon returning to the Alpha Quadrant.

Not missed at all. The review teases as much. Stay tuned, there’s a separate article coming soon.

Where in the episode was this?

We think Kathryn Janeway had her best episode ever on the season finale to Prodigy today, easily the best Star Trek show in 20 years. This was to us the most emotional episode or movie since The Wrath of Khan.

Agreed. Prodigy is my favorite show since Voyager and my favorite show out of all the modern shows. Just a really great season of Star Trek.

I started tearing up a few minutes into the episode and stayed that way for pretty much the entire runtime.

Just beautiful. Masterfully done. Touching. Inspiring. I had a tear when Holo Janeway died. This show is just such a joy. Totally Trek to the core. I was very much against animated Trek. Now I believe the entire franchise should be turned over to the Prodigy team.

Agreed and well said, Luke.

Some star systems are MUCH smaller than others. TRAPPIST-1, with its so-far-discovered exoplanets, would fit handily inside the orbit of Mercury!

So well done. I think Dal has finally grown on me.

Dal’s arc has been incredible, a total transformation and in such a short space of time. A credit to the writers.

What a great end to a spectacular season of Star Trek.

Prodigy reminded me of why I love Star Trek so much. I really enjoyed season one of SNW and I love Lower Decks, but there’s something special about Prodigy. I think it’s how they’ve given so much time to develop their characters and how they’ve played with the main troupes and themes of Trek in really creative and respectful ways. From the Kobayashi Maru, to first contact, to the Prime Directive, and time travel hijinks, I’ve enjoyed it all. And I love how they’ve always kept the core principles of Star Trek’s optimistic vision of the future as the guiding light for every element.

What a surprise it has been. Very thankful for the Prodigy team for giving us this show and I cannot wait for season 2.

Now that it’s over I have to say what a total surprise this show turned out to be for me, and my favorite from these showrunners. Someone said someplace this is the best new Trek we’ve had since the early 90’s, and I agree 100%.

SNW’s first season was enjoyable as well, but the canon bending/breaking and legacy-character pandering/altering (imo) puts it in 2nd place for me.

Prodigy just “feels” like a Trek show, funny and suspenseful, optimistic, tightly written, respectful of Trek lore without trampling on it, and in some parts of this season, actually wondrous. Kudos to all involved for one he*l of an introductory season I’ll be visiting again (and again). If this is really for kids, then this 56-year old kid thanks you.

Looking forward to PIC S3, and hoping it won’t crash and burn like the last two seasons. Cautiously optimistic. Cheers, and Happy New Year to all.

Yep, as pretty much always Danpaine we are in total agreement! Prodigy is the best of Berman era Star Trek for me (my favorite era by far) and it’s my favorite show in modern Star Trek! I love both LDS and SNW, but Prodigy just tell its story in a way that honors everything that came before. It has just the right amount of fan service but doesn’t hit you over the head with it like LDS and SNW does (but I don’t mind being over the head that much ;)). And yes while I loved SNW, the canon issues still bothers me but not like it less just not as much as Prodigy which has done a phenomenal job with canon.

This show is just incredible to me and probably the best first season of any Star Trek IMO. And I really hope a lot of kids are watching this and it will motivate them to watch the other classic shows as they get older…but I’m guessing that was the point. ;)

Oh BTW, waaaay off topic but I don’t know if you remembered but you suggested I should watch the show Severance. I actually did a month ago. Apple TV gave me 3 free months to subscribe (for Roku owners) and it was the first show I watched last month. A really great show (but still no Star Trek ;)).

Oh Good, glad you caught Severance! Not Trek-like of course but a little mind-bending fun. I found it interesting. And written by Ben Stiller, which I also find interesting.

Definitely looking forward to season 2 of Prodigy, but here comes Picard S3. I really hope this season is a winner, after the last two letdown seasons. Here’s hoping!

Oh yeah it definitely was a great show. I’m so happy I went in blind! I didn’t know Ben Stiller directed the show until I started watching it. I’ll probably get Apple TV again whenever season 2 comes out.

Yes finger cross for Picard once again lol. It kills me this is my least favorite show although it was easily the one I was the most excited for. So yeah let’s hope third time will be the charm. The good thing about about a lot of the shows third season is when things turn around greatly so hopefully it will go the same way with this show too.

The trial was strange. I see no reason for release any kind of charges in the first place for “stealing the ship”. They found an abandoned ship in non federation territory, so the Kids just become the new owners. Its not good what they suggest to the young viewers in this case.

‘Legitimate Salvage’ in the characterization of another show outside the franchise ;)

The fact that the kids were doing their best to return the ship to the Federation, until they realized the threat it was, overrides even the need to argue salvage.

I agree that it’s an unnecessary moral exception and friction for a children’s show.

The midseason finale’s use of Zero’s madness-inducing power on the Diviner was also questionable choice as a moral decision in a children’s show. My spouse called that one out, and we’d hoped to see Zero wrestle with it later. We can agree with TrekMovie’s assessment that Zero has been underserved. There’s still room for the show to address Zero’s having used their power in a harmful way against their abuser.

I have a theory about season 2 that…ok I just made up in my head.. but the Hageman brothers have said there are more legacy characters appearing in season 2.

So on the rescue mission to find Chakotay I think we will be getting the Voyager-A captained by… Harry Kim. Wouldn’t that be a fun way of playing on his eternal ensign rank joke, but also giving the character a totally new lease of life in a new role where we could see how he’s grown?

Also, there seems to be Delta quadrant races everywhere now because of the unmanned Borg transwarp network, so I hope we get to see Neelix again somewhere along the line. If any past VOY character was perfect for a kids show it’s him.

Nope, it will be Lt. (Junior Grade) Harry Kim.

I know people like to joke about Kim’s status but he was a Captain in the alternate future in Endgame (which is basically the time period the Picard show is now) so my guess is he will have been promoted higher by now if he stayed on the same course as the alternate timeline suggested.

I really don’t like Harry Kim. If we’re having a ship under the command of a Voyager character, I’d prefer to see Captain Tuvok.

Yeah I didn’t care much for Kim either but I think that was more so down to the writer’s inability to create anything compelling about the character. I’d be interested in seeing what these talented guys can do with him. Tuvok would be good fun too! But when he appeared in Lower Decks most recent season they referred to him as Commander Tuvok, right? And I think it’s pretty much the same time period so not sure if that’d be possible to see him as Captain.

Well, Tuvok can be recently promoted, if it’s a new ship and all. :-)

PRO takes place 3-4 years after LDS, so it’s possible he could’ve been promoted to captain by then. And this is the same people who made Seven a Captain as a ‘field promotion’ by Picard when she wasn’t even in Starfleet at the time and is a first officer on the Titan now. They also made Tilly a first officer on Discovery who was still just an ensign. Let’s not get into Burnhams crazy see-saw rankingss in the first three seasons of Discovery. And the same group who made a 3 year cadet into a captain in like a week in that other universe, so I don’t think that hard about any of this stuff anymore lol.

If they decide to bring back Tuvok on Prodigy he can definitely be a captain. Like seriously, what stops him from being one at this point?

Yeah that’s true! Tbh I had completely forgotten about Tilly. My DISCO callback is almost zero as I haven’t been able to bring myself to rewatch any of it, thanks for the reminder!

And now that I think of it, didn’t Tuvok serve as a cadet instructor at Starfleet Academy? So he’d be perfect for getting the PROD kids into shape quickly. I also forgot how old he is, so he definitely has the experience for being a captain at this stage after having served under Sulu and his time at the academy and on Voyager. I think Tuvok is a great prospect for this!

😢 😢 😢 had me crying. This was a starfleet show. What Star Trek is about? Family diversity, teamwork and sacrifice to solve problems.

A spectacular finale for a spectacular show!

This was Star Trek done right all season and did a great job of wrapping up everything. Yeah, it was mostly predictable. We knew they would figure out a way to stop the Living Construct and ultimately become part of Starfleet. And this was such a great way to do it, to be part Admiral’s Janeway ship (but will really miss hologram Janeway). And yes, I am crossing my fingers it will be the Voyager A!!!! How fantastic that would be, although I would’ve just been happy to see them back on the new Protostar.

Season 2 is going to be interesting to see them officially part of a ship and on their way to find Chakotay in the future! And if they are on the Voyager A, we may see another Voyager legacy character on that ship too (c’mon, give me another version of the Doctor…just do it!!!). Next season could feel like an even stronger Voyager spin off show now that Janeway is back leading the charge.

But Prodigy has become my favorite show in the modern era and the best Star Trek in 20 years! It’s now my fourth favorite show overall after DS9, TNG and VOY. I love both LDS and SNW but Prodigy is the best of all Star Trek to me.

But now we are finally leaving the 24th century (and we been in this era for a long time now with both LDS and PRO airing back to back) and a return of not only live action Star Trek but back to the 25th century with the beloved TNG crew returning! Let’s hope that season is done right!

It’s a great time to be a Star Trek fan! :)

I had my doubts about animated Star Trek, but Prodigy’s initial season was simply outstanding! Perhaps the best S1 since TOS.

Kudos to the writing team who managed to not only introduce a new cast, but to tell their backstory and get the audience to care for a complete crew of non-humans.

New Trek really has adapted and come a long way since that initial Fuller premiere of Discovery! The success of Prodigy really bodes well for Picard S3. Just 49 days until we get to see what is in store for the gang from TNG!

I don’t know how much Prodigy bodes for other shows. Within Secret Hideout, this show and LDS were really Heather Kadin’s projects and she’s move on to lead another production company.

Unlike many, as a parent who saw the need for it, I was totally positive about an animated series targeted for kids and families – even if our own kids were always going to be beyond the target age before it was released. Knowing the Hagemans would be in charge, gave me confidence it would be elegantly made.

What really confounded me was the initial public pitch about a group of ‘lawless teens’.

Fortunately, the packaging of that early pitch doesn’t really have much to say about the actual show. Something we should all keep in mind as we hear the two-line summaries for other Trek shows in development….or the next hype about the grail of another cinematic feature.

Agreed DeanH, it is crazy how the new shows have come full circle since that first season of Discovery. It feels like it took them time to figure out how to get back to the kind of Star Trek fans were missing while trying to do something new with the franchise at the same time. And I feel every show has improved for the most part.

Prodigy has done a great job of presenting a new angle to Star Trek but still feels very lived in to the rest of the classic shows. And someone mentioned this to me on another site but they noticed how the show started more ‘alien’ at the beginning of the season being on Tars Lamora and by the end was fully immersed in the Star Trek world. The show ended its season at Starfleet headquarters standing next to Janeway. That says it all.

I feel since SNW through LDS and now PRO, we had a very good year of Star Trek. It’s just been a ton of fun. While I still feel DIS and PIC fumbled their last seasons I am looking forward to season 3 of Picard. I’m just really hoping we are getting a real TNG season with everyone back and maybe a few extra surprises along the way! Let’s keep the good vibe going!!!

And someone mentioned this to me on another site but they noticed how the show started more ‘alien’ at the beginning of the season being on Tars Lamora and by the end was fully immersed in the Star Trek world.

There was an interview with the producers pretty early on where they talked about exactly this. They deliberately started the show less “Star-Treky” and introduced more and more classic Star Trek elements over the course of the season. I guess it was their way of pulling new audiences in without overwhelming them.

Or maybe their way of appeasing studio executives who still thought ‘new Star Trek’ should mean ‘anything but Star Trek’.

Wow that is interesting. It worked really well too. It was a smart way to ease not just the kids in the show but the real kids watching it into the universe slowly. It’s the complete opposite of Lower Decks lol. But they both work so well for their intended audiences.

Thank you, Prodigy writers, for getting Star Trek back to truly feel like itself again after such a long time! And in just one season, no less — what an accomplishment! I wouldn’t mind at all for these characters to show up in live action eventually, either. 🤩

The current order for me to enjoy Trek on TV the most: DS9 (nearly unbeatable), The Orville (😜), TNG, VOY, PRO, ENT, PIC, TOS, SNW, LDS, [there might be some overlap above here and there, then a big gap, then…] DSC. 🖖🤨

For me, it’s currently:

-DS9 -TNG -VOY -PRO -TOS -ENT -LDS -SNW -DIS -PIC

And honestly, with the exception of PIC and DIS, I love them all anyway. So I’m really really hoping both those shows just surprise me in their next season. Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds is really a tie for me if I’m being honest, so I just listed those by alphabetical order.

But Prodigy really surprised me. I can’t believe how much I enjoyed it. It’s no way I thought I would rate it this high, especially after just a season. And I agree, it’s nice for Star Trek to truly feel like Star Trek again. I haven’t felt this way about Star Trek since the 90s.

Niiice! 😁👍 I bet quite a few others on here would agree on the first four — maybe not in that particular order, but it appears that PRO has definitely surprised most of us!

I had the hardest time deciding which order to put SNW and LDS in, myself! Then decided that, while LDS heaps on fan service by the truckload, and is set smack-dab in my favorite era, its tone is just “off” a little too often. 🤷‍♂️

I hope that S3 will propel PIC at least past DSC for you, even if The Burnham Show itself finally moves past its plethora of issues. (I’m still really trying hard to care for it!) 🤞 But last place would be a very sad place to be in, for a show with that many characters from your second favorite! ☝️😯

Yeah Prodigy has definitely surprised many people. I don’t think anyone thought it would be as layered and so attuned to canon as it is. In fact I kind of thought the canon stuff wouldn’t be so prevalent since it’s for kids and they won’t catch the references like the Benari in the final episode thanking Janeway for what she did for her group in Counterpoint. It’s that kind of reference that makes the old fans smile but will get new fans to appreciate this show more if and when they watch Voyager some day.

I just really respect these guys and how thoughtful they are to canon. Maybe Discovery would be higher on our lists from day one if they put in the same kind of thought into that show, but I digress. ;)

As far as Picard, it’s basically tied with Discovery if I’m being honest. I’m just disappointed with that show for so many reasons, but I just had higher expectations for it once you bring back such a legacy character after nearly 20 years. I was always 50/50 on Discovery because it was new and I hated it was a prequel show in the beginning. And then such a BAD prequel show only made it worse lol. But Picard my expectations were so high and why I’m so disappointed with it. The irony is with Prodigy it was quite low in the beginning. Now I think the best idea is for every show to start with low expectations lol. SNW they were more moderate but paid off well since I fell in love with that show early on.

And I hear you about Lower Decks. I love it, but yeah it can definitely be an acquired taste for some.

Prodigy certainly surprised me. For Secret Hideout to make something that didn’t outright suck is truly amazing. I feel like Prodigy was a mistake for them. But let’s not kid ourselves. As decent as Prodigy is, let’s not anoint it as King of all Trek. It just isn’t THAT good.

If we are doing this again…

TOS DS9 ENT VOY TNG PRO PIC SNW LDX Star Trek Discovery.

And let’s face it… The gap separating the bottom 3 is awfully small. The recent season of LDX shot it down to near Discovery level.

The season was good overall, but I didn’t love this finale. It really just felt like this was just the ending of the previous episode, instead of its own story. And it was just odd that there was the whole thing about how the shuttle didn’t have navigation, and they could be anywhere, but then they just find their way to Earth off screen a couple of scenes later.

Yeah… Much of their solution didn’t make a lot of sense. Which is part of what made this ending a bit of a let down. But overall I feel like this show legitimately tries. Something I just don’t feel from the other shows. So even when the show stumbles I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Loved it! Now thatza Star Trek! For myself, Trek is at its best when the stakes are high. “We need warp speed in 3 minutes, or we’re all dead!” moments. Mulgrew has stated that the Hageman brothers are geniuses. I agree. This show works on many levels. The adults can watch it while it still entertains a younger audience. Yes, give these brothers a live-action Trek. If only we could get Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone) to develop a live-action Trek….

So are they going to tie this in to Picard so that someone will mention the Enterprise-E was lost when the Protostar returned? What about that starship graveyard including the Defiant? I really was expecting that they’d do something that would reverse the destruction of all those starfleet ships. Maybe in season two?

There was more than one Empire Strikes back reference. When the crew is watching Gwen’s ship fly away it is very reminiscent of the ending scene of that movie, when Lando takes the Falcon.

Welp… A little underwhelmed. I mean… I didn’t suck. But it wasn’t great either. Jest ended on a ‘meh’. Not really sure what else to say. This “meh” show is easily the best thing Secret Hideout has made. Which isn’t exactly a glowing resume of results. I still mostly like the characters. But I feel like the show was let down by plotting and story. I feel things moved awfully fast. I don’t know if that is a function of the half our format or what. But Rebels, for example, seems aimed for a similar demographic and it managed to have decent pacing.

Anyway, I guess I should just be happy to have a Trek show that doesn’t suck.

P+ is off again until the next Trek comes.

Netflix Saves Beloved 'Star Trek' Show From Cancellation

New episodes of 'Star Trek: Prodigy' are in the works for Netflix after the show's heartbreaking cancellation at Paramount+.

By Michael Hein - March 4, 2024 05:38 pm EST

Netflix rescued Star Trek: Prodigy from obscurity when it was removed from Paramount +, and now it is even producing new episodes. Sci-fi fans were devastated when Paramount+ not only canceled the series, but removed it from the catalog last summer. The series is now streaming on Netflix and according to a report by The Wrap , 20 new episodes are in production and will premiere later this year.

Star Trek: Prodigy premiered in October of 2021, targeting a younger audience for the first time in the franchise's history. There were 20 episodes in the first season, and reports that a second season was already in the works when Paramount+ announced the cancellation in the summer of 2023. Thankfully, Netflix licensed the show meaning fans could continue to stream it, but the fate of that second season was uncertain until showrunners Alex Kurtzman, Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman announced the plans to release it on Netflix.

"Thank you to our incredible Star Trek: Prodigy fans, who championed not just a show, but a community that's always been connected by the belief that we build a better future together," they said. "We set out to inspire you, but you inspired us. The team is still hard at work on the second season, and we can't wait to share it with the amazing fans around the world."

"I've always held that the Star Trek fan base is among the strongest and most intelligent in the world. They have shown their collective passion, and we're happy to be able to celebrate Prodigy once again," added actress Kate Mulgrew, the voice of Admiral Janeway. Prodigy's removal was a part of Paramount+'s integration with Showtime, giving the company the option to shop some shows around to other distributors. Other shows in that package such as Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies have not resurfaced yet.

Prodigy begins in the year 2383 – five years after the conclusion of Star Trek: Voyager. It is about a motley crew of young aliens who discover an abandoned Starfleet ship called the USS Protostar on an alien world. They take control of the ship and learn to fly it as a crew, and eventually find themselves entrusted with responsibility by Starfleet. The show has many references to the other series in the Star Trek franchise, giving young fans an easy entry point into this vast fictional world.

Right now, the first 20 episodes of  Star Trek: Prodigy are available to stream on Netflix. The show is also available to rent or purchase on digital stores like Amazon's Prime Video. There are another 20 episodes expected later this year.

Service history [ ]

Original voyage [ ].

The Protostar was under the command of Captain Chakotay for a return mission to the Delta Quadrant undertaken in the years after the return of the USS Voyager . ( PRO : " Kobayashi ", " Asylum ") It was equipped with a holographic training advisor known as Hologram Janeway , modeled after Chakotay's former commanding officer, Captain Kathryn Janeway , and holographic projectors in multiple areas of the ship. ( PRO : " Lost and Found ", et al.)

During the mission, Chakotay sent out a mayday reporting that the Protostar had encountered a temporal anomaly that sent the ship into the future and deposited over the planet Solum after it had already been decimated by the native Vau N'Akat, a species that blamed the Federation for a catastrophic civil war which devastated their homeworld fifty years after the Federation made first contact with them. Chakotay attempted to send a distress call , but the damaged ship was then stormed by Drednoks and Chakotay was captured alongside his first officer Commander Adreek-Hu on the bridge. ( PRO : " Preludes ")

The Protostar is sent back through the anomaly

The Vau N'Akat now had control of the Protostar and placed blocks in the ship's main computer to conceal information about its original crew and purpose, partially using the Vau N'Akat language as a passcode encryption. One Drednok also gained access to Chakotay's command authorization codes . ( PRO : " Kobayashi ", " First Con-tact ", " Time Amok ") They also placed a weapon called the living construct onboard the ship and hid it in a subdeck under the bridge. The weapon was capable of hijacking Federation ship systems and causing them to "turn on themselves... and tear themselves apart." The Vau N'Akat planned to send the Protostar back through the anomaly and use it as a Trojan horse to deploy the weapon in Federation space and destroy Starfleet before they could make first contact with them. However, this plan went awry when Chakotay and Adreek-Hu escaped on the eve of the launch. Unable to disarm the construct or board the ship to escape, Chakotay remotely sent the crewless Protostar back through the anomaly before the plan could be enacted, and the Protostar was lost in the past. Desperate to find the ship so they could utilize the weapon, a Vau N'Akat organization called " The Order " was founded and launched the last of their fleet consisting of one hundred agents each with their own Drednok through the anomaly in search of the Protostar . ( PRO : " Dream Catcher ", " A Moral Star, Part 2 ", " Let Sleeping Borg Lie ", " Preludes ")

By 2366 , the lost Protostar was located deep inside Tars Lamora . One agent known as The Diviner spent many years searching for it, establishing the Tars Lamora prison colony to conduct and finance his efforts. ( PRO : " Lost and Found ", " Kobayashi ")

Under the command of Dal R'El and his crew [ ]

USS Protostar found

Dal and Rok-Tahk find the Protostar

In 2383 , it was accidentally discovered by Dal R'El and Rok-Tahk buried in the Northwest Crevasse within the prison colony. ( PRO : " Lost and Found ")

After escaping Tars Lamora along with Zero , Jankom Pog , Murf and The Diviner's daughter Gwyndala , the ship encountered a binary star system and was almost destroyed after being pulled into the gravity well of an orbiting white dwarf that was in the final moments of tearing apart its red giant companion. ( PRO : " Starstruck ") Under Janeway's advisement, the crew continued on to investigate a Class M planet located in the Hirogen system , where the ship was nearly consumed by the cilium-like vegetation that inhabited the planet-like superorganism before nearly being captured by The Diviner. ( PRO : " Dream Catcher ", " Terror Firma ")

They succeed at escaping the REV-12 when the ship's protostar drive was engaged, and the ship was hurdled nearly 4,000 light years to the Gamma Quadrant in a matter of minutes. Around this time, Murf discovered the ship's holodeck , which included such holoprograms as Andoria IV , Ceti Alpha V skydiving , kal-if-fee gladiator match , Count Dracula , 1885 Deadwood South Dakota , Paxau Resort , Janeway Lambda One , and the Kobayashi Maru scenario . ( PRO : " Kobayashi ")

The Protostar visited the Cymari homeworld and made first contact with the Cymari . ( PRO : " First Con-tact ")

The Protostar then flew through a tachyon storm , which fractured the ship into several parallel realities moving at variable speeds and nearly caused a warp core breach . The crew was forced work together across these fractured realities, guided by Hologram Janeway, to make the repairs to restore it to normal time and prevent the ship's destruction. ( PRO : " Time Amok ")

Eventually, the crew of the Protostar were given an ultimatum by The Diviner that forced them to return to Tars Lamora and surrender the ship in order to save the Unwanted . With only enough power left for one proto-jump, the crew decided to launch a rescue mission to Tars Lamora despite it potentially meaning that they would never be able to reach Federation space. The Diviner double crossed the crew and stranded them on Tars Lamora to die. However, they removed the exotic matter dilithium matrix , preventing the ship from going to proto-warp and allowing the crew to rescue the miners and reclaim the Protostar. Now aware of how to recharge the proto-drive, the crew set course for Federation space. ( PRO : " A Moral Star, Part 1 ", " A Moral Star, Part 2 ")

When the Protostar left from Tars Lamora, its proto-warp signature was detected by the USS Dauntless for the third time. The Dauntless ' commander, Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway used the signals to track the ship, on a rescue mission to find its former captain, Chakotay. ( PRO : " A Moral Star, Part 2 ")

Being chased by the USS Dauntless [ ]

Weeks after leaving Tars Lamora, the crew reached the remote Starfleet communication relay station CR-721 where they attempted to seek asylum . Unfortunately, thanks to the living construct weapon, which was onboard the ship, as soon as Lieutenant jg Barniss Frex attempted to upload the Protostar 's logs into the station's computer, the computer systems on the station suddenly went haywire and turn its phasers on itself and destroying the station. ( PRO : " Asylum ") Soon after, Gwyn remembered her father telling her that the weapon's purpose was to destroy Starfleet from within. Though the crew found the weapon hidden in a subdeck on the bridge, they were unable to remove it or deactivate it. ( PRO : " Let Sleeping Borg Lie ")

Next, the crew traveled to the Denaxi Depot , hoping to bury the Protostar and seek transport to the Federation. Unfortunately, realizing that Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway considered them criminals for stealing the Protostar and destroying the relay station, they unearthed the buried Protostar and fled into the Romulan Neutral Zone , with the Dauntless unable to pursue since entry into the Zone was forbidden. ( PRO : " Crossroads ", " Masquerade ")

Later, the Dauntless resumed its pursuit and was able to merge its warp field with the Protostar 's. The Dauntless shot several phaser shots at the Protostar but were unable to penetrate its shield. However, it caused Zero to inadvertently switch consciousness between Admiral Janeway and R'El when he tried to establish a telepathic link. Janeway and Dal were able to switch back to their bodies before they were stopped by a Starfleet armada in the heart of Federation space. During this time, Ensign Asencia , of the Dauntless revealed herself to be a Vau N'Akat known as "The Vindicator" and boarded the Protostar along with the Diviner. After subduing the crew, Ascencia contacted the Dauntless and activated the living construct. The construct was able to infect the Dauntless and the armada forcing all ships to fire at each other. The Dauntless ' universal translators were also taken offline by the construct as it spread to the rest of the armada. Fortunately, the Dauntless and other ships were freed from the construct's corruption when Hologram Janeway destroyed the Protostar by detonating the proto-core while at proto-warp. ( PRO : " Mindwalk ", " Supernova, Part 1 ", " Supernova, Part 2 ")

Having escaped from the ship in a bare-bones shuttle , the crew managed to make it to Earth a month later. Starfleet discovered that Hologram Janeway had replicated the parameters logged in the wormhole that the Protostar 's original crew had been lost in, thus creating a new wormhole to roughly the same space-time coordinates. Through the wormhole, Starfleet received a second distress call from Chakotay that revealed that he and half of the ship's original crew were still alive, trapped 52 years in the future. In addition, while the Protostar itself was only a prototype , Starfleet approved full production of the Protostar -class . ( PRO : " Supernova, Part 2 ")

It had an excellent reception from both critics and audiences, mostly because of its amazing cast, and in many ways, it's a return to what fans loved about much of the original series. Season 2 is coming out fairly soon, and we can hope that it will keep up the excellent quality from the first season. It is another chance for us to see what the Enterprise is up to before Kirk and another excellent saga in the Federation's bid to explore the galaxy. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 will be hitting screens on June 15, 2023 . As of right now, Season 2 has already finished production, and small bits of information have been leaking out to the public via formal and informal channels. As with the rest of the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 will be released on Paramount+. The first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was on a Thursday release cycle, running from May 10, 2022, to July 7, 2022, and is available for free on Paramount's YouTube Channel .

Watch on Paramount+

Ahead of the official trailer, we got to see two sneak peeks for the season. The first of these sneak peeks features Lieutenant Erica Ortegas (played by Melissa Navia ) on her way to an away mission. It seems the tempo of the crew has hardly changed even though Number One Una Chin-Riley (played by Rebecca Romijn ) is no longer with the crew. We also have some more pithy wordplay with Spock as he continues to grow his ability to interact more naturally with others.

The second sneak peek is more of a behind-the-scenes look. In the previous series, such as Star Trek: The Next Generation , we often see casual places for the crew to relax around the ships. The showrunners thought the mess hall that we saw in the first season was too sparse and have introduced a new area for the ship. The video features Will Wheaton , formerly TNG's Wesley Crusher, and the production designer Jonathan Lee showing off the impressive new set piece. It looks somewhat familiar to Ten Forward and has that modernized 1960s look. This new set is supposed to feature a lot more intimate conversations between characters and includes a ton of easter eggs. One that was immediately picked up by Will Wheaton was the Saurian Brandy from Star Trek: Picard . We see Guinan and Picard drinking it from a similar bottle in Picard Season 2 Episode 1 "The Star Grazer".

The first trailer for Strange New Worlds Season 2 was released on April 19, 2023. The roughly two-minute trailer serves as a teaser for the events to come. Check it out here:

More recently, we got the official trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 on May 24. The new trailer showcases a lot more of the action to come, and gives us our first proper look at the series' upcoming crossover with a certain other Star Trek show. See the trailer in the player below and stay tuned for more:

We received a clip from the upcoming season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . In this clip of Episode 2, Una stands on trial. It's a very entertaining albeit brief video.

Most of the cast from the previous season is returning, which is to be expected given the state the show was left in. Given the events of the last season, the Enterprise will be in need of a new head engineer. The newcomer to the enterprise will be played by the iconic Carol Kane . Kane is well known for roles in the TV series Taxi and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt as well as various film roles, usually playing a more comedic motherly character. It seems that this time around she will be a no-nonsense engineer, but perhaps we will see some of that comedic side as well.

The full list of main cast members in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 includes Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, Ethan Peck as Spock, Jess Bush as Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas, Babs Olusanmokun as Joseph M'Benga, Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley / Number One, and Carol Kane as Pelia, among others.

One of the major storylines that we can expect to see is what exactly happened to Number One. One of the highlights of the first season was finding out that she was genetically engineered (one of the recurring issues in Star Trek with characters such as Deep Space Nine ’s Dr. Bashier) and that she has been taken away from her position on the Enterprise. Captain Pike and the rest of the crew definitely support her, but with her position unfilled, someone will have to step in to fill her shoes in the interim.

We also have a first occurrence in the Star Trek Universe, a combined crossover episode with the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks . Tawny Newsome (who plays Ensign Beckett Mariner in the animated show) and Jack Quaid (who stars alongside Newsome as Ensign Brad Boimler) will be making their live-action debut during the new season of Strange New Worlds . Given that Mariner and Boimler both originate from a timeline much closer to that of Star Trek: The Next Generation , we are certainly left with more than just a few questions. So far, we know that the series will have combined animated and live-action scenes. That episode will be directed by Star Trek veteran Jonathan Frakes .

With characters such as Paul Wesley ’s Captain Kirk appearing in Season 2 , there is certainly a lot of potential for a Season 3. And clearly, Paramount+ has taken note, as it has been confirmed that Strange New Worlds will be getting a Season 3 . The show has plenty of storylines left to explore and has proven to be among the more successful shows in the franchise, so this hardly comes as a surprise. From the tension between Spock and Nurse Chapel to Uhura’s hesitation to continue in Starfleet, not to mention La'an’s murky past, there is plenty left to unpack on this amazing show.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was created by Akiva Goldsman , Alex Kurtzman , and Jenny Lumet . Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman are the showrunners for the season. Season 2's directors include Chris Fisher , Amanda Row , Eduardo Sánchez , Dan Liu , Jonathan Frakes, and Valerie Weiss . The episodes were written by Henry Alonso Myers, Akiva Goldsman, Dana Horgan , David Reed , Kirsten Beyer , Davy Perez , Kathryn Lyn , and Onitra Johnson . The score for Season 2 was composed by Season 1 and Star Trek: Prodigy composer Nami Melumad . Executive producers on the show include Eugene Roddenberry , Trevor Roth , Jenny Lumet, Frank Siracusa , John Weber , Aaron Baiers , Heather Kadin , Henry Alonso Myers, Akiva Goldsman, and Alex Kurtzman.

Screen Rant

Star trek’s last 2 live-action shows are discovery sequels.

The Star Trek franchise is looking lean after the end of Picard, Discovery, and Lower Decks but the last Trek shows standing continue Disco's legacy.

  • Star Trek: Discovery's success paved the way for Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy, ensuring the franchise's future beyond 2025.
  • Lower Decks' end marks the close of the 24th-century era, with Section 31 movie exploring past sins in the early 24th century.
  • Despite gaps between time periods, the Star Trek franchise in the 2020s mirrors the cohesive era of the 1990s, promising a positive future.

When Star Trek: Discovery ends later this year, it leaves behind its two spinoffs as the last live-action Star Trek shows standing. Paramount+ recently announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for season 4, while simultaneously announcing that Star Trek: Lower Decks would end with season 5 . With Lower Decks due to end later in 2024, and the future of Netflix's Star Trek: Prodigy unknown beyond season 2, 2025 looks like a lean year for televised Star Trek .

As sad as that may seem, there's something positive about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy carrying on the legacy of its parent show. After a 12-year gap, Star Trek: Discovery revitalized the franchise on TV. The success of Discovery season 1 and 2 laid the groundwork for the modern Star Trek franchise, and that can never be overstated. Without Discovery there would be no Strange New Worlds or Star Trek: Picard season 3, so it's only right that it continues to push the franchise forward into 2025 and beyond .

Gene Roddenberry's Son & Star Trek Executive Producer Comment On Franchise Future

Strange new worlds & starfleet academy are star trek: discovery sequels.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy are effectively sequels to Star Trek: Discovery , set in the show's disparate timelines. Strange New Worlds tells the story of what happened after the USS Discovery time traveled to the far future, while Starfleet Academy will continue the story of Star Trek 's 32nd century. Following the end of Star Trek: Picard in season 3 , live-action Trek exists in two time periods; the 23rd and 32nd centuries, leaving a 900-year gap in the middle . That needn't be an insurmountable gulf, as both SNW and Starfleet Academy are tied together by their connections to Discovery .

Star Trek: Section 31 , the franchise's first streaming-exclusive movie, also follows on from the events of Star Trek: Discovery , via the character of Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh).

Looking back at the state of the franchise in the 1990s, post- Star Trek: The Next Generation , both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager were thousands of lightyears apart. However, they felt part of a cohesive era, anchored by TNG . There's a neat bit of symmetry then, as Star Trek: Discovery comes to an end, that there are two spinoff shows that are also wildly different in tone but anchored to a parent show. It's easy to be concerned about the future of Star Trek , following recent cancelation announcements, but the shape of the franchise in the 2020s feels much like it did in the 1990s, which can only be a positive .

Star Trek: Lower Decks Ending Is A 24th Century Tragedy

While Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy may be the Deep Space Nine and Voyager of the 2020s, they won't continue the story of the 24th century. Star Trek: Lower Decks ending with season 5 will bring an end to the 24th century period of the Star Trek timeline , at least when it comes to the TV shows. Michelle Yeoh's Star Trek: Section 31 movie will reportedly focus on the untold adventures of the early 24th century, which could shed new light on classic Star Trek: The Next Generation characters .

Rachel Garrett, first introduced in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" is confirmed to appear in Star Trek: Section 31 .

As enticing as that might be, it's still disappointing that Star Trek: Lower Decks won't get the chance to further explore what happened after Star Trek: The Next Generation ended. There'll be a glimpse of the 24th century in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 when it hits Netflix, but much of that will likely take place in an alternate future. While Star Trek fans will be well served for new adventures in the 23rd and 32nd centuries, there's a gnawing sense that the franchise is missing out on all the exciting things happening in the 900-year gap between Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy .

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is aiming to start production in late summer 2024.

The show centers around Commander Michael Burnham, assigned to the USS Discovery, where the crew attempts to prevent a Klingon war while traveling through the vast reaches of space.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

A spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a television series that takes place before the events of the original series and follows Captain Christopher Pike as he mans the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The show focuses on this previous crew of the Enterprise as they explore the galaxy with returning characters from Discovery.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

After being closed for over a hundred years, Starfleet Academy is reopening its doors to those who wish to pursue a career as Starfleet Officers. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will follow a new group of cadets as they come of age, and build friendships, rivalries, and romantic relationships while being threatened by a new adversary that could destroy the Academy and the Federation itself.

Star Trek: Section 31

In this Paramount+ exclusive movie event, Michelle Yeoh returns as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, who was first introduced in Star Trek: Discovery Season 1. Star Trek: Section 31 centers on Yeoh's character as she faces her past sins and is recruited by Starfleet's secret division that protects the United Federation of Planets.
