It’s handwritten most Tuesdays, and it features our latest music coverage and Tom’s latest thoughts on life.

Here’s an example . Pretty enjoyable, right?

Engaging with the music of Sweet Trip is a very personal thing. That’s true for all music–the thesis of this very blog is that the listener forms their own story when listening to a song based on their own experiences–but it’s especially true with Sweet Trip. A Sweet Trip song is never just happy or sad: even their most upbeat moments have a wistful undercurrent, and even their most melancholy songs have a certain sense of wry serenity. This ambiguity extends to their albums:  Velocity : Design : Comfort  celebrates the possibilities of the future while hinting towards a deeper alienation, while  You Will Never Know Why  contains devastating ballads and peppy Stereolab-esque pop. Different people with different imaginations will hear the same music and come away with different conclusions.

As such, my ten favorite Sweet Trip songs will look very different from someone else’s. I don’t mean to position myself as an authority–Roby Burgos himself is reluctant to declare himself an authority on his own music, not wanting to override what fans might think–but since they released a new album and I had the immense privilege of interviewing Burgos , I want to share ten songs that I think are essential to understanding the unique beauty of this band. As ranking these songs would be like choosing a favorite puppy from a litter, they’ll be listed in chronological order.

“Fish” (from  Halica: Bliss Out v.11 ):  It’s not quite accurate to say that Sweet Trip arrived fully formed. Their debut album,  Halica , had elements of both ambient techno and shoegaze, but they didn’t always synthesize the two as neatly as they would in the future. Still, they had blissful soundscapes down pat, and the album’s opening track, “Fish,” still stands among their best. Clouds of synth and guitar drift across playful, clattering drums, while Valerie Cooper’s voice lilts and echoes like a mysterious spirit singing as she bathes in the depths of a cave. Even as it gets noisier towards the end, “Fish” still feels like a dream, a burst of optimism and possibility.

“Dsco” (from  Velocity : Design: Comfort ):  Considered by many Sweet Trip fans to be their best work (it’s ranked the highest on Rateyourmusic, the music nerd haven where I cut my teeth writing amateur reviews),  Velocity : Design : Comfort was where Sweet Trip truly came into their own. On  Halica , the electronic and rock elements were starting a tentative courtship; here, they’re happily married, and the result brims with imagination and joy. “Dsco” is  VDC  at its most optimistic, with vibrant pop hooks and crunchy rock candy guitars suggesting a glorious futuristic playground: it sounds like a utopian soda commercial in the best possible way. But while the lyrics invite us to “spread the towels and bring out the lotion” and “synchronize your time in motion,” the pleasure is tempered by the need to escape from something: “run away to the sun, to the comfort.”

“Velocity” (from  Velocity: Design: Comfort ):  Sweet Trip’s brilliance comes in part from their musical versatility. They’ve always delighted in genre fusion, but you get the sense that they could have been a pure dream pop band or a pure ambient techno outfit and been just as excellent either way. Case in point: “Velocity,” a straight-ahead IDM suite that stands tall alongside the Autechres and Venetian Snares of the world. While some IDM gets too caught up in its own cleverness, “Velocity” is endlessly evocative: its looping synth haze and sputtering drum crunches summons a world of blue holograms and jagged chrome skylines. Everything about it is pure cool, down to a distorted lounge-y piano put in the mix towards the end, but Cooper’s periodic vocals hint at a desperation and a loneliness behind all this opportunity.

“Chocolate Matter” (from  Velocity : Design: Comfort ): There’s something great about a band that knows exactly what its listeners want. Take “Chocolate Matter,” which comes towards the end of  VDC  and provides a dizzying rush of catharsis. It starts out as a catchy, lilting shoegaze song, not far off from You Made Me Realise -era My Bloody Valentine. Then, an absolutely thunderous guitar riff that sweeps in out of nowhere, sticking around just long enough to get you addicted before disappearing for a buzzing synth solo and another verse. “This is all great, of course,” you catch yourself thinking, “but I really hope that huge guitar riff comes back.” And then it does! And it repeats over and over again until the end of the song, growing louder and more ecstatic until it feels like your headphones might break! And it’s awesome!

“Acting” (from  You Will Never Know Why ): Musically,  You Will Never Know Why  is a lovely moonlit shimmer of an album, forgoing the noisier shoegaze and IDM parts of Sweet Trip’s sound for pure dream pop bliss. Lyrically, however, it gets dark, going into thorny, personal territory. “Acting,” an early highlight, gets a lot of mileage out of that juxtaposition. It’s a long, sprawling song, with a psychedelic outro left over from the  VDC  sessions, and the rich sounds make the lyrics dig their claws in deeper. “Don’t speak of golden dreams,” Burgos sings over a fast-paced, jazz-inflected section. “You once had a chance to make things right.” The “acting” described in the title refers to “acting on regrets,” but when Burgos coos “so sad, so sad, so hopeless,” the cruel joke of the title’s second meaning comes in. It’s the most luscious world’s-smallest-violin ever recorded.

“Milk” (from  You Will Never Know Why ): While “Acting” was acidic and bitter, “Milk” is just devastatingly sad. With its jangly acoustic guitar and yawning pedal steel, “Milk” sounds a little like Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You,” but while that song is an expression of romantic intimacy, “Milk” is about the loneliness of drifting apart. According to Burgos, “Milk” is about an insomniac watching their lover sleep, jealous of their peaceful rest. But in the song’s bittersweet tone, it’s clear that the divide is deeper and more complicated than that. “You will drift away/and I won’t mind,” Cooper sighs, and she means it. “Don’t you drift away,” she pleads afterwards, and she means that, too.

“Your World Is Eternally Complete” (from  You Will Never Know Why ): One of the album’s most upbeat offerings, “Eternally Complete” has plenty of darkness in its lyrics, but this time the darkness is being pierced by the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s a fast-paced pep talk of a song, with Cooper’s sweet, bell-like voice encouraging you to “carry yourself through the frozen desert” and “empty your thoughts into the well of pressure.” It’s a lot to ask, but it’s a testament to Sweet Trip’s empathy that it feels possible: it really does feel like they’re in your corner, and if they think you can carry yourself through the frozen desert, then, hey, why not give it a shot?

“Things to Ponder While Falling” (from  You Will Never Know Why Outtakes ): When “Things to Ponder While Falling” was posted to Soundcloud in 2015, the description said that it was “probably the last Sweet Trip song ever.” Thankfully, that turned out not to be the case, but if it really was the last we’d hear of them it would have been a wonderful coda. The first half of “Things to Ponder While Falling” is a gentle, almost halting lullaby, with Burgos and Cooper singing from the point of view of an outcast (or just an agoraphobe) hiding in their home from the “wounds of coyness and shame.” It’s not a happy song, but there’s a sense of peaceful resignation: if you’re falling, you may as well close your eyes and drift off before you hit the ground. Then, right when you think there’s nowhere else to go, a surge of guitar kicks in, and you get your second wind along with the band.

“Chapters” (from  A Tiny House, In Secret Speeches, Polar Equals ):  When any band returns after twelve years, it’s natural to wonder what might have changed in their sound and what new approach they might take. In the case of Sweet Trip, they didn’t radically alter their sound for  A Tiny House, In Secret Speeches, Polar Equals , but they did take everything they had done over their discography and put it all together into one lush, swooning package. Everyone who likes Sweet Trip will find something to like on this album, and “Chapters” may end up one of the best-liked songs of all: starting with a glitchy acoustic strum that recalls the warped warmth of Fennesz’ Endless Summer , it becomes a psychedelic swirl of guitar, synth, and voice, achingly tender and romantic. “Hand in hand, electrified/I will love you,” Burgos and Cooper promise, and the sentiment is earned.

“Snow Purple Treasures” (from A Tiny House, In Secret Speeches, Polar Equals ): There’s nothing tiny about  A Tiny House . Although it’s not the longest album Sweet Trip’s ever made ( VDC  beats it by about four minutes), it’s definitely the most ambitious, aiming for transcendent romantic bliss at every turn. In the wrong hands, it could be exhausting, but with songs like “Snow Purple Treasures,” who could complain? Not unlike “Chapters,” it opens with a sparse acoustic strum and delicate vocals before expanding into the stratosphere, but there’s always something twilit and elegant to its sound. In short, it sounds like its title (the best Cocteau Twins song title Cocteau Twins never came up with.)

“Polar Equals” (from A Tiny House, In Secret Speeches, Polar Equals ): If you wanted to narrow Sweet Trip’s entire discography down to one song, it might be “Polar Equals.” Sure, it lacks the gorgeous vocals that are essential to the band’s excellence, but it contains just about everything else: dreamy peals of guitar, brilliant blossoms of psychedelia, even a return to the blippy IDM of VDC. And to finish it all off, there’s a beautiful outro that shimmers and glimmers and darkens like black butterfly wings. It’s a perfect reminder of what Sweet Trip is capable of, and it’s when it finally sunk in that one of my favorite bands was back.

Hozier ’s “Too Sweet” ascends to No. 1, from No. 2, on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, three weeks after it debuted at No. 5. The Irish singer-songwriter achieves his first Hot 100 leader. In his sole prior run in the top 10, he hit No. 2 with his breakthrough hit “Take Me to Church” in 2014-15.

“Too Sweet” is from Hozier’s EP Unheard , which debuted three weeks ago as his fourth Billboard 200 top 10. In 2023, he began his first U.S. tour since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic; the trek continues with international dates scheduled through November. He told Billboard ahead of the tour’s start, and reflecting anticipation for his new music, “I’m just excited to share the work live with a fan base that has been with me now for 10 years.”

Plus, Sabrina Carpenter earns her first Hot 100 top 10 as “Espresso” enters the chart at No. 7. The song follows her first top 40 hit, “Feather,” which concurrently flies to a new No. 21 high on the latest list.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated April 27, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, April 23. For all chart news, you can follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram.

Below is a look at Hozier’s Hot 100 coronation and Carpenter’s top 10 launch.

How ‘Sweet’ It Is

Hozier’s “Too Sweet,” on Rubyworks/Columbia Records, becomes the 1,169th No. 1 in the Hot 100’s history. It drew 35.6 million streams (down 3%) and 14.1 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 136%, good for top Airplay Gainer honors on the Hot 100) and sold 6,000 (down 17%) April 12-18.

The single, which Hozier co-wrote and co-produced, rises 2-1 to become his first leader on the Streaming Songs chart; dips to No. 5 from its No. 3 high on Digital Song Sales ; and debuts at No. 42 on Radio Songs .

The song was first widely heard via a teaser snippet during Hozier’s March 6 appearance on the How Long Gone podcast, ahead of its proper release March 22 on his four-track EP Unheard .

After Hozier’s introductory hit “Take Me to Church” reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 in 2014-15, he remained absent from the chart until adding five entries since last April, led by Noah Kahan’s “Northern Attitude,” remixed with Hozier; the song debuted and peaked at No. 37 in November.

When “Too Sweet” debuted at No. 5 on the April 6-dated Hot 100, Hozier ended the longest wait between top 10s since The Beatles returned to the tier after nearly 28 years with “Now and Then” last November. Meanwhile, Hozier waited the longest between a first No. 2 hit and a first No. 1 since The Miracles – over 50 years ago. Their “Shop Around” hit No. 2 in February 1961 before “The Tears of a Clown,” by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, led in December 1970, a span of nine years, nine months and three weeks; Hozier waited nine years, four months and one week between the peaks of “Take Me to Church” and “Too Sweet.”

“Too Sweet” adds a fourth week at No. 1 on the multimetric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart – where it’s Hozier’s second leader, after “Take Me to Church,” for 23 weeks in 2014-15 – as well as Hot Rock Songs and Hot Alternative Songs .

Ireland Back at No. 1 in the U.S.

“Too Sweet” marks the fifth Hot 100 No. 1 by an Irish act. It’s the first since Sinéad O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” in 1990 and the first by a male soloist since Gilbert O’Sullivan’s “Alone Again (Naturally)” over a half-century ago.

Here’s a rundown of all Hot 100 No. 1s by Irish acts:

  • Hozier, “Too Sweet,” hit No. 1 April 27, 2024, one week at No. 1 to date
  • Sinéad O’Connor, “Nothing Compares 2 U,” April 21, 1990, four weeks
  • U2, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” Aug. 8, 1987, two
  • U2, “With or Without You,” May 16, 1987, three
  • Gilbert O’Sullivan, “Alone Again (Naturally),” July 29, 1972, six

Hozier was born in Newcastle, County Wicklow, Ireland, on March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day, of course – in 1990 (a little over a month before O’Connor’s signature hit became the last Hot 100 No. 1 by an Irish act until “Too Sweet”). Additionally, “Too Sweet” tops the Ireland Songs chart for a third week.

‘One Sweet,’ ‘Too Sweet’

Hozier’s “Too Sweet” is also just the fifth Hot 100 No. 1 with the word “sweet” in its title.

Here’s a look at all such confections to top the Hot 100:

  • “Too Sweet,” Hozier, 2024
  • “One Sweet Day,” Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men, 1995-96
  • “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” Guns N’ Roses, 1988
  • “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” Eurythmics, 1983
  • “My Sweet Lord”/“Isn’t It a Pity,” George Harrison, 1970-71

(Additional sugar high: Sweet Sensation’s “If Wishes Came True” led the Hot 100 in 1990.)

Shot of ‘Espresso’

Sabrina Carpenter brews up her first Hot 100 top 10 as “Espresso” debuts on the chart at No. 7. Released April 12 , it drew 19.8 million streams and 5.1 million in airplay audience and sold 4,000 in its first week.

The song enters the Hot 100 while Carpenter’s first top 40 hit, and first Pop Airplay chart No. 1 , “Feather,” rises to a new No. 21 high on the latest Hot 100. It also follows the singer-songwriter and actress’s performances at both weekends of this year’s Coachella festival. She previously supported Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour for 30 dates from last August through March.

‘Like That’ Leads Rest of Top 10

Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar’s “Like That” drops to No. 2 after spending its first three weeks on the Hot 100 at No. 1. It concurrently tops the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts, which use the same multimetric methodology as the Hot 100, for a fourth week each.

Future & Metro Boomin's 'We Still Don't Trust You' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200

Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” holds at No. 3 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 2, and Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” keeps at No. 4, four weeks after becoming his first No. 1. The latter logs a second week atop Radio Songs (69.9 million, essentially even week-over-week).

Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” rises 6-5 on the Hot 100, after it reigned for two weeks in early March. It leads the multimetric Hot Country Songs chart for a 10th week.

Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” lifts 7-6, following six nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 beginning in December; Ariana Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” is steady at No. 8, after it debuted at No. 1 in March; Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season” climbs to a new No. 9 high, from No. 10; and SZA’s No. 6-peaking “Saturn” returns to the region (15-10), as it leads Hot R&B Songs for a fourth week.

Also notably, and expectedly – with limited availability for it to be streamed in the April 12-18 tracking week – J. Cole’s “7 Minute Drill” falls off the Hot 100, a week after it debuted at No. 6. On the song, he appears to respond to Lamar’s apparent disses directed at himself and Drake in “Like That.” Days after releasing “7 Minute Drill” April 5 on his album Might Delete Later , J. Cole apologized for the its arrival, explaining that it doesn’t “sit right with my spirit,” and the track was removed from the streaming edition of the LP April 12; as of April 22, it is still available on the set’s digital download edition, although not for individual purchase apart from the album.

The song rewrites the record for the steepest drop off the Hot 100 a week after debuting, surpassing Soko’s viral hit “We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow,” which spent a week on the survey at No. 9 in April 2014.

Again, for all chart news, you can follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on Billboard ’s social accounts, and all charts (dated April 27), including the Hot 100 in its entirety, will refresh on Billboard.com tomorrow (April 23).

Hozier

Hozier has nothing but love to share with his fans after his song “Too Sweet” topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart — his first time hitting the No. 1 spot.

The singer-songwriter is also the first Irish artist — and fourth overall — to lead the chart since Sinéad O’Connor’s (who died in July 2023 at 56) “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

The “Take Me to Church” singer added in the post’s caption, “A huge thank you for all the incredible support from around the world #TooSweet has reached #1 in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and #1 for a second week in the UK and Ireland. Singles & eps, about sweet trip.

San Francisco-based group Sweet Trip gleefully incorporated a wide range of styles into their futuristic blend of indie pop and electronic music. First appearing near the end of the 1990s with a lush, spacious mixture of dream pop, ambient, techno, and drum'n'bass, they fused wide-eyed pop songwriting with glitch-heavy experimentation on the 2003 opus Velocity : Design : Comfort. Easing up on the frenetic electronic effects, they released the more streamlined but still vibrant You Will Never Know Why in 2009. The band unexpectedly became popular online near the end of the 2010s, and they returned in 2021 with their fourth album, A Tiny House, In Secret Speeches, Polar Equals. 2022's Seen/Unseen gathered rarities from throughout the band's career.

'Too Sweet' Lyrics: Hozier Reacts to Song Going Viral, Explains the Memes

Hozier is reacting to the success of his song “Too Sweet” and the viral memes about his latest single.

The 34-year-old Irish musician, best known for his song “Take Me to Church,” just went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time with the song.

“I think I’ll take my whiskey neat / My coffee black and my bed at three / You’re too sweet for me,” he sings in the chorus.

The song went viral on TikTok with people showing their glow-ups with before and after photos to the tune of “I think I’ll take my whiskey neat.”

So, what does Hozier think of the memes?

Keep reading to find out more…

Hozier seems to be confused by how the trend started and said, “I wouldn’t have put it necessarily for this, but when the word neat drops of ‘I take my whiskey neat,’ it’s a before and after shot of somebody who was younger and after they got older.”

“It’s all been a pleasant surprise for me, but that’s the beauty of people just making their own thing, their own little memes, their own little jokes on TikTok,” Hozier said on Radio X .

Future and Metro Boomin

Nearly a month ago, Future and Metro Boomin’s collaborative “We Don’t Trust You” album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spurred a ravenous back and forth between hip-hop giants — Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Drake — that has grown to involve numerous other public figures. The album was part one of a dual release that continued with the April 12 drop of “We Still Don’t Trust You.”

This week, the 25-song effort becomes the pair’s second project to hit No. 1 in less than a month. It debuted with 127,500 album units earned (162.57 million streams), according to data from Luminate. Its precursor entered the ring with 251,000 units in its first week.

Popular on Variety

Meanwhile, “Like That” continues to top the Billboard Hot 100 , sitting at No. 2 this week, while its parent LP sits at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

Outside of the rap beef, Hozier leads the Hot 100 for the first time in his career with “Too Sweet,” three weeks after the song debuted at No. 5. It drew nearly 36 million streams and 14 million radio airplay audience impressions.

Hozier had remained largely absent from the Hot 100 following the No. 2 placement of his breakthrough hit “Take Me to Church” in 2014. According to Billboard , Hozier had the longest wait between top 10s since the Beatles returned to the Hot 100 after nearly 28 years with “ Now and Then ” last November.

Back on the Billboard 200, Linkin Park’s biggest hits compilation album, “Papercuts,” enters at No. 6 with 44,000 units earned and 20,500 album sales. Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” moves to No. 2 with 98,000 equivalent album units after spending its first two weeks at the summit. Morgan Wallen’s former No. 1 “One Thing at a Time” is at No. 4; Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season” is at No. 5, following the release of the record across exclusive vinyl and CD variants; Benson Boone’s “Fireworks & Rollerblades” is at No. 7; and SZA’s Grammy-winning “SOS” lifts to No. 8. Wallen’s “Dangerous: The Double Album” re-enters the Top 10 at No. 8 and Ariana Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine” rounds out the top at No. 10.

Louisiana entertainment: Changes to sports betting, a road-trip song, and top festivals

This week's entertainment news features the changes to sports betting in Louisiana, and, for travelers, Imagination Movers has you covered with the perfect family road trip song. Some south Louisiana festivals were named among nation's 10 best.

Changes in sports betting

Louisiana legalized sports betting in 2020 and issued its first licenses to sports books in 2021. Last month, at the start of the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments, NCAA President Charlie Baker encouraged states to consider banning the prop bets on individual athletes.

Louisiana Gaming Control Board Chairman Ronnie Johns said the state will outlaw what are known as proposition bets on college players beginning in August because of rising threats against athletes when they don't cover the bets.

What do you need to know about the ban? Louisiana is banning certain sports bets

Family road trip Fun

For any family road trip this spring break or summer, this rock band and Emmy-winning Disney Junior TV series is creating the perfect music playlist for any family adventure.

The Imagination Movers' new song titled "Road Trip" from their upcoming album is the perfect addition to any family playlist this summer. Plus, thanks to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Chamber Singers, some of the kiddie songs start off with a choir, according to a news release.

Top festivals in the South

South Louisiana festivals named among nation's 10 best in USA Today Readers Choice Awards. Rougarou Fest has been rated one of the nation's 10 best cultural festivals in a nationwide  competition . Two New Orleans festivals also made the list. Foret said this year's festival, set for Oct. 18-20, is significant because the number 13 is special in the rougarou lore.
