Lions at sunset on a safari in Kenya

Kenya or Tanzania ? Which country has the best national parks and the most exciting wildlife?

We think they both do – that’s why we created these immersive Kenya and Tanzania safari tours exploring the two greatest wildlife environments in Africa.

What are the two most famous wildlife parks in the world? The Masai Mara and the Serengeti . Facing each other across their international border, you can witness the millions of wildebeests of the Great Migration herding from the vast plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania over to the green rolling hills of Kenya’s Masai Mara.

You can also visit the great snow-capped form of Mt Kilimanjaro just beyond the Tanzania border framing large families of elephants in Kenya, at Amboseli National Park .

And nothing compares with the numbers of big cats in the Masai Mara except perhaps the incredible density of lions you’ll find descending into Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater .

Kenya and Tanzania are famous for their diverse wildlife, and the safaris offered by Africa Kenya Safaris provide excellent opportunities to see a wide variety of animals in their natural habitats. One of the most popular groups of animals to see on safari is the “Big Five”: lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos, and rhinoceroses. The Masai Mara and Serengeti national parks are both known for their Big Five populations. The Masai Mara National Reserve is home to one of the largest lion populations in Africa, as well as large herds of elephants, buffalos, and giraffes. Beyond the Big Five

Aside from the Big Five, there are many other animals that can be seen on safaris in Kenya and Tanzania. For example, the Amboseli National Park is known for its large population of elephants, which are some of the largest in Africa. The park also has a variety of other animals, including lions, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeests. The Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos, and black rhinos.

See all the Wildlife Kenya and Tanzania has to offer

The safaris offered by Africa Kenya Safaris also provide opportunities to see some of the less well-known animals that are unique to East Africa. For example, the Samburu National Reserve is home to several rare and endangered species, including the Grevy’s zebra, the reticulated giraffe, and the Somali ostrich. The Lake Nakuru National Park is known for its large populations of pink flamingos and other water birds, as well as for its black and white rhinos. Overall, a safari in Kenya and Tanzania provides an incredible opportunity to see a wide variety of animals in their natural habitats.

What is the best time of year to take a combined Kenya and Tanzania safari?

The best time to take a combined Kenya and Tanzania safari depends on what you would like to see and experience.

Benefits of Kenya and Tanzania Safaris During the Dry Season

For instance, the dry season is the best time to see wildlife in both countries as the animals tend to gather around water sources. In Kenya, the dry season runs from June to October while in Tanzania, it runs from June to November. During this time, the grass is also shorter which makes it easier to spot animals.

See the Great Wildebeest Migration

Alternatively, if you’re interested in witnessing the wildebeest migration, then the best time to visit is from July to September. At this time, the wildebeest are crossing from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Maasai Mara in search of better grazing fields. This is an unforgettable experience that you don’t want to miss! However, it’s important to note that this is also the busiest time for tourists, so expect higher prices and larger crowds.

Low Season Safaris Can be Amazing Too!

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly trip, consider visiting during the low season. This is typically during the months of April to May, and November to December. While there may be more rainfall during this time, it is still a great time to see wildlife as the animals are less dispersed and the scenery is lush and green. Additionally, the lower number of tourists means that you can take advantage of lower prices and have a more personalized safari experience.

Certainly! At Africa Kenya Safaris, we understand that everyone has unique preferences and interests. That’s why we offer fully customizable itineraries for our combined Kenya and Tanzania safari tours. Traveling to Kenya and Tanzania: An Overview

A split image showing giraffes and zebras on Kenya and Tanzania tours.

Looking for more information to plan your Kenya and Tanzania itinerary? From transport options to trip highlights to travel tips, we’ve got you covered!

Getting From Kenya to Tanzania

Traveling to Tanzania from Kenya is fairly easy and is the most preferred itinerary. When you're planning your journey from Kenya to Tanzania, you have got a couple of great options to choose from. First is taking a flight, which offers speed and convenience. You can board a plane in Nairobi, Kenya's capital, and land either at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is well-connected and makes for a smooth starting point.

Another option is to travel by road, which can be a more scenic adventure. You can take a private shuttle or a bus from Nairobi to Arusha, the gateway to Tanzania's northern safari circuit. You will get to soak in the beautiful East African landscapes along the way.

Best Time to Visit Kenya and Tanzania

The best time to embark on your Kenya and Tanzania safari adventure is during the dry season, which spans from late June to October. Wildlife viewing is at its best during this time, as animals gather around water sources, making them easier to spot.

Mild weather and clear skies prevail throughout the season, ensuring comfortable and picturesque safari experiences. It is an ideal time for travelers, as the conditions maximize opportunities for game drives, cultural encounters, and enjoying the diverse landscapes of these East African gems. However, the pièce de résistance of taking a combined trip to the two countries during the dry season is the Great Wildebeest Migration, which takes place from July to August.

For more detailed information, read our best time to visit Tanzania and best time to visit Kenya guides.

Highlights of Kenya and Tanzania Trip

Wildebeests and zebras crossing the Mara River.

 • Opt for a hot air balloon safari in Serengeti National Park (Tanzania) and a game drive in Maasai Mara National Reserve (Kenya) to witness the annual Great Wildebeest Migration from two completely different points of view.
 • Immerse yourself in the rich cultures of East Africa by visiting Maasai villages in both countries. Learn about their traditional customs, dances, and way of life.
 • Delight your taste buds with the diverse flavors of East African cuisine. Enjoy traditional dishes like nyama choma (barbecued meat) in Kenya and the aromatic spices of Tanzanian cuisine on your culture trip in Kenya and Tanzania.
 • Take in the sheer size and majesty of Kenya’s Lake Victoria on a boat tour. For an extra special experience, opt for a sunset cruise to see the surrounding landscape in a new light.
 • Snorkel in the crystal clear waters off the coast of Zanzibar in Tanzania. Explore the vibrant coral reefs and swim alongside spectacular marine life, including angelfish, dolphins, stingrays, and turtles.

Kenya and Tanzania Travel Tips

 • Optimize currency exchange by withdrawing or exchanging cash in larger cities like Nairobi or Arusha, where you will find more favorable rates than in remote areas. Carry sufficient local currency for both countries.
 • Tanzania and Kenya have different plug types. Ensure your electronics are compatible with both UK-style Type G and Type D sockets to keep your devices charged throughout your journey.
 • Prepare yourself for the road conditions in Tanzania, where infrastructure is lacking compared to Kenya.
 • Bring a waterproof jacket. Just because you are in East Africa does not mean you will get sunshine daily. The weather can change instantly if you are around the rainforests near Mount Kilimanjaro.
 • Bottled water is going to be your best friend on your Kenya and Tanzania adventure trip , as safe drinking water is not accessible everywhere, and you are likely going to spend a lot of time out in the sun.

At a Glance: Kenya vs Tanzania

Faq for kenya and tanzania tours.

1. Is it easy to travel between Kenya and Tanzania? Tanzania and Kenya are neighbors, so traveling between the two countries is fairly easy. The cheapest and most popular way to travel is by bus or organized overland crossing. If you are short on time, there are also plenty of short-haul flights between the two countries. 2. Do I need visas to travel to Kenya and Tanzania? Unless you are from a visa-exempt country such as Botswana, Rwanda, Singapore, and around 40 others, you will need visas to enter Tanzania and Kenya. You will need separate visas for both countries. You can obtain these visas from the respective embassies or consulates in your home country or upon arrival at major entry points. Some travelers may also be eligible for e-visas, which can be applied online in advance. 3. Are any specific health precautions or vaccinations required for a combined Kenya and Tanzania tour, and what medical facilities are available in remote safari areas? Yellow fever vaccination is often required to enter both the countries, and malaria prophylaxis is recommended. Carry a basic first-aid kit and ensure your travel insurance covers medical emergencies. Medical facilities in remote safari areas may be limited, so plan accordingly. 4. Is travel insurance necessary for a combined Kenya and Tanzania tour, and what should it cover to ensure a smooth trip? Travel insurance is highly recommended. It should cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and evacuations. Ensure it also includes coverage for the activities you plan to engage in, such as safaris and adventure sports.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

When To Go On Safari …

• January to February: Summer – dry and warm; cooler at Ngorongoro because of elevation. Migration picks up, with plenty of game throughout central/southern Serengeti.

• March: Rains become possible, bringing plains animals in search of fresh grass and food. Significant movement of antelope and other game to the plains for calving season; predators follow.

• June to October: Dry season; can be cold on the rim of Ngorongoro. Wildebeest and plains game begin migrating in search of water. By late July, wildebeest migration is in full swing, with opportunities for excellent game viewing and predator kills, especially in the Masai Mara.

• November to December: Season of the “short” rains (brief daily thunderstorms); comfortable temperatures at Ngorongoro; warm in the Serengeti, with plentiful game.

Staying at Sayari

After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for the flight to the North of the Serengeti. This area has amazing wildlife all year long, and typically receives the migrating herds from end of June to September, depending on the weather pattern.

Once the migrating herds have travelled back to the southern Serengeti in December, you can experience much more privacy with fewer tourists and vehicles around the national park. This is the period of time when safari veterans like to visit and enjoy having these vast plains to themselves. There is still have plenty of wildlife around, including lions and cheetahs. You might see elephants and rhinos and even leopards lurking in the riverine forests.

Back at camp, Sayari’s rim-flow pool is set between natural rock formations for guests to cool off in while watching elephants or zebras ambling past camp. After a dip, treat yourself to a beer at the Serengeti’s first solar-powered microbrewery before an afternoon game drive and sundowners around the campfire.

Do we need visas for both Tanzania and Kenya?

Yes, visas are required for each country, depending on your country of origin.

What safari vehicles are used during the safari in Kenya & Tanzania?

We use a custom-built 4WD Toyota Land Cruiser for our safaris. The vehicles take up to 6 clients in 3 rows of seating (guaranteed window seat for all) with a pop-up roof, which can be raised for excellent wildlife viewing. The pop-up roof offer excellent photography opportunities and also provides shade while enjoying your safari. Our vehicles are serviced and maintained to a very high standard before and after every safari to ensure optimal comfort during your journey.

Do I use the same safari guide in Kenya and Tanzania?

No, we get you the best guides for each country. You will change vehicles and guides at the borders, either the Isebania border from Masai Mara or the Namanga border from Amboseli National Park. The driver change will occur after the immigration process.

What currency can I use for both countries?

Tanzania and Kenya each have their local currencies, Tanzanian and Kenyan shillings. You can use USD dollars which is acceptable in both countries too.

When is the best time to do a safari in both Tanzania and Kenya?

The best time to go on safari in Kenya and Tanzania is during the dry season, typically from June to October. This is the peak season for safari tourism as the weather is mild, the vegetation is less dense, and wildlife is more easily spotted around the water sources. The months of July to September are particularly popular as the wildebeest migration occurs in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. However, the dry season is also the busiest time of year, and prices for accommodation and tours tend to be higher. Suppose you’re looking for a quieter and more affordable safari experience. In that case, you may want to consider visiting during the shoulder season, which runs from January to March or November to early December. During these months, the weather is still relatively dry, and there are fewer tourists. The rainy season, which typically runs from April to May and November to December, can be challenging for safari. The roads can become impassable, and the vegetation is denser, making wildlife harder to spot. However, some lodges and parks offer discounted rates during this time, and the landscape can be lush and beautiful.

Does the wildebeest migration take place at the same time in both countries? And what is the best time to witness it?

Yes, the wildebeest migration takes place in both Kenya and Tanzania, as the herds move between the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. The timing of the migration can vary slightly depending on weather patterns and other factors, but generally, it follows a similar pattern in both countries. The best time to witness the wildebeest migration is during the dry season, which runs from June to October. During this time, the herds congregate around the Mara River, which forms a natural boundary between Tanzania and Kenya. The crossing of the Mara River is one of the most spectacular and dramatic events of the migration, as the wildebeest face off against crocodiles and other predators in their quest for greener pastures. However, the exact timing of the migration can be unpredictable, and it’s worth noting that the herds can arrive earlier or later than expected. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the peak season for safari tourism is during the migration, and popular viewing spots can become crowded.

Is it safe for me to take my children with me on Safari?

Yes, traveling to Kenya & Tanzania can be a wonderful experience for families with children. We provide excellent child-friendly guides and try to limit the amount of time spent in a vehicle. We also offer regular stops along the way when doing a family safari. Please get in touch with us at [email protected] for more information. You should also ensure that your children understand the importance of respecting the wildlife and following safety guidelines, such as staying inside the vehicle during game drives and listening to your guide’s instructions. It’s also important to take precautions to prevent illnesses such as malaria, which is prevalent in many safari destinations in Africa. Ensure your children are up-to-date on their vaccinations, and bring appropriate insect repellent and clothing to protect against mosquito bites.

What is the tipping etiquette for safari guides and mountain crews on trips like this?

Tipping is highly appreciated at the end of safari/mountain climb. The size of tips will vary depending on the length and complexity of the trip, the number of staff on the trip and the number of clients on the trip. Generally, groups like to meet together before the end of the trek to discuss how much they would like to tip each staff member based on their individual trek experience. You should prepare an envelope after your trek for your tip money at the Hotel. You can use US dollars, Euros, TZ Shillings or a combination of these. Please ask the Safari/Climbing coordinator at the Hotel for advice.

RECOMMENDED TIP:

Mountain Climbs : $25-50 USD per Day per Climber to be shared between guides, chefs and porters.

Safaris : Driver/Guide: $35-50 USD per Day per Car. If it is a camping safari there will be a tip for the cook $10 USD per Day.

THESE ARE JUST GUIDELINES AND TIPS CAN BE GIVEN TO SAFARI STAFF/MOUNTAIN CREW ACCORDING TO SERVICES PROVIDED.

Welcome to Africa's "Garden of Eden"… and the destination that some would say is the land of safaris. Our Tanzania tours will transport you to "the place where life began" where you'll witness the "Big Five" on private game drives in Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro and beyond while enjoying experiences that reveal the essence of East Africa on a small group safari or a family-inspired adventure.

Serengeti Zanzibar Tanzania Safari

Welcome to Tanzania

Wherever you go in Tanzania, opportunities abound for getting to know the county's people and cultures with once-in-a-lifetime moments.

A picnic lunch in ngorongoro crater, game drives and a picnic in africa's original "garden of eden".

Believed by many to have been Africa's original "Garden of Eden," Ngorongoro Crater ranks among the world's largest calderas, and contains one of the oldest and most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Within this dormant volcano's walls lie short grasslands, swamps, forests and a freshwater lake – all of which inspire a continuous parade of migrating wildlife. You'll not only embark on a game drive in this "lost world," but a private picnic lunch inside the crater will be a highlight of your trip.

Meet the Maasai people

Learn the ways of the maasai at a traditional boma.

A highlight of your family's Tanzania safari is your visit to a Maasai boma – a nomadic village preserving traditonal Maasai cultural customs, consisting of small huts made of mud and cow dung for sleeping and cooking. Can you picture living here with your family? During your visit, Maasai villagers will demonstrate their spear-throwing, bow-and-arrow and other traditional skills. You'll also have an opportunity to visit a local primary school to talk with the children and their teacher.

Stories almost as old as the Earth itself await you in Tanzania

Gliding in a hot air balloon high above the vast plains of the Serengeti, observing the "circle of life" below… a picnic lunch in the wildlife treasure-trove that is Ngorongoro Crater, a volcanic caldera that some believe may have been the "Garden of Eden"… a visit to Oldupai Gorge, home to some of the earliest evidence of humans on Earth… Tauck experiences revealing the essence of Tanzania…

Follow the migration in a mobile camp

Our first moving safari's mobile camp follows migrating wildlife.

Every year, over a million wildebeest and more than 200,000 zebras make a trek across Tanzania from the southern reaches of Serengeti National Park to the Masai Mara National Reserve and back again, instinctively driven to constantly search for food and water. On Tauck's first "moving safari," follow this "Great Migration" with a three-night stay in tented accommodations at Legendary Serengeti Mobile Camp – moving with the wildlife as they traverse the heart of Serengeti National Park, and heading out on game drives each morning and afternoon.

Private game drives throughout your trip

Set off on private game drives on specially built safari vehicles.

Hop aboard your specially built safari vehicle and make tracks on a daily game drive (or two) across the classic African savannah stretching out before you... in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, and in Kenya's Amboseli National Park and Masai Mara Reserve. Guiding you on your treks in search of the "Big Five" and other iconic wildlife are our expert drivers, trackers, rangers, and Tauck Directors... all highly experienced and eager to share their knowledge while keeping everyone engaged, safe and sound on the adventure of a lifetime!

Reviews of Small Group tours to Kenya And Tanzania

The tour was exactly what we expected. It was early mornings, lots of time in vehicles searching for animals, and a lot of photography and amazing sights. The campsites were awesome, but make sure you are okay sleeping in tents with 3” foam mattresses (it wasn’t a problem for us, but you need to expect to rough it a bit). The guide, drivers, and cooks were amazing and incredibly helpful and kind.

Investigate the 10 Best African Countries for Safari below:

tanzania and kenya tours

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

Recommended Tours:

Not only do they have some of the best conservations, but Kenya is also home to 1100 different species of birds, 115 amphibians, 280 reptile species and not to mention 390 species of mammals. It is without any doubt, one of the best places to go for a Safari and witness wildlife.

When it comes to parks and national reserves, Kenya houses 16 national reserves and 25 national parks. Along with that, the country also boasts numerous private conservations which are open for visitors.

Kenya, as a country for Safari, is a force to reckon with.

Its stunning wildlife environment is too phenomenal to put into words. Most of the African countries will not be able to even compete with their national parks and wildlife conservations. If you don't visit there at least once in your life, you're missing out on a huge chunk of excitement.

Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late Dian Fossey back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

tanzania and kenya tours

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

Recommended Tours:

Out of its 20 national parks, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to many wildlife animals such as African elephants, Angolan giraffes, Cape buffalo, etc. Other than that, there are many private ownerships of National parks, notably the Kasanka National Park which is near the basin of Lake Bangweulu. I did a search on this site and the replies seem to be at least 10 years old.

My tour operator sent me a link to get the Visas.

It appears Visas are only good for 90 days so I'll have to wait until about 2 1/2 months before the trip. Although I'm out more than 90 days I just went thru as far as I could go online to see if there were any issues. They ask for a selfie to be included. I didn't find any problems. Are there any?

For Tanzania you can get visa on arrival or apply online this is the link for Tanzania visa https://visa.immigration.go.tz

We'll get together 2 1/2 months before we leave.

What about photos? Size of file? is there a process to upload them? etc
