Quick overview of the TD Platinum Travel Visa*

The TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card is best for TD Bank users who frequently book their travels through Expedia and want to earn rewards on their everyday spending like bills and groceries.

However, like all credit cards, it comes with its own set of pros and cons. In this comprehensive review, we'll delve into the card's features, benefits, and how it stacks up against other TD offerings and plan programs, helping you decide if it's the right fit for your wallet.

The TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card is designed for TD Bank users who frequently book their travels through Expedia and want to earn rewards on their everyday spending. It offers a generous welcome bonus, high earn rate on dining, groceries, and Expedia bookings, making it a valuable option for frequent travelers. However, if you're looking for more premium travel perks like airport lounge access, consider other cards in the market, including TD's Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege*

How to earn TD Rewards points with the RTD® Platinum Travel Visa

The TD Platinum Travel Visa Card offers an impressive earning rate on several keys categories:

  • Earn 6 TD Rewards points for every $1 spent when you book travel through Expedia for TD
  • Earn 4.5 TD Rewards Points for every $1 spent on groceries and dining out
  • Earn 3 TD Rewards Points for every $1 spent on recurring bill payments
  • Earn 1.5 TD Rewards points for every $1 spent on everything else

How to redeem points

The average dollar value of one TD Reward point is $0.005. To make this math easier, let’s crank up the points.

The best way to redeem your points is by travelling through Expedia for TD portal, where 200 points equal 1 dollar.

You can also book travel through any provider where the value goes down a little for the first $1,200 in spending—250 TD Rewards points are worth $1. Redeeming merchandise is not as valuable, where, depending on the retailer, you’ll get, at best, half and at worth a tenth of the value out of your points.

You can also apply your points as a statement credit if you’re trying to pay down a balance.

Key Benefits of the TD Rewards Card

  • Expedia benefits: If you frequently book through Expedia, this card offers one of the best rewards rates for your bookings.
  • Dining and groceries: Earn a high rate of 4.5 points for every dollar spent at restaurants and grocery stores, making your night out on the town or grocery run even more rewarding.
  • Travel insurance: The card includes decent travel insurance coverage, ensuring peace of mind during your travels. However, you can upgrade your coverage for an additional fee to unlock emergency medical insurance.

TD Rewards Visa credit card insurance coverage

The Platinum Travel Visa credit card from TD provides an impressive selection of travel insurance and everyday protection benefits for cardholders, including:

  • Flight delay insurance of up to $500 if your trip is delayed more than 4 hours.
  • Delayed and lost baggage insurance up to $1,000 per insurance person if delayed more than 6 hours.
  • Travel accident insurance up to $500,000 (while travelling on a common carrier like a plane, train, or bus).
  • Rental car insurance for up to 48 consecutive days up to a maximum MSRP of $65,000.
  • Mobile device insurance up to $1,000 in the event of loss, theft, or accidental damage.
  • Extended warranty insurance that doubles the manufacturer’s warranty up to an additional 12 months.
  • Hotel burglary insurance up to $2,500.
  • [Optional] Apply for travel medical insurance in case of medical emergencies abroad.
  • [Optional] Apply for Trip cancellation insurance to help recover trip expenses or the cost of a trip home.
  • [Optional] Apply for TD Auto Club Membership for roadside emergencies.

Rewards Visa cardholders also receive peace of mind thanks to instant fraud alerts; TD Fraud Alerts continuously monitors your TD account registered mobile phone and automatically alerts you if suspicious activity is suspected.

Extra Benefits of the TD Bank Platinum Travel Visa* credit card

  • Additional rental car savings: At Avis and Budget locations, you can save a minimum of 10% off the lowest base rate fares in Canada and 5% in the U.S.
  • No restrictions: There are no travel blackouts or seat restrictions, and your TD Rewards Points never expire as long as your account is open and in good standing.
  • Earn more stars at Starbucks:  Link the TD Rewards card to your Starbucks account and earn 50% more TD Rewards points and Stars.
  • Mobile wallet compatibility: Use Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay wherever contactless payments are accepted.
  • TD mobile app: The app allows you to manage your account, view transactions, block international purchases, and more. It's available in the Apple App Store and Google Play.
  • Added payment security: Chip and pin technology for an added layer of security.

What people are saying about the Platinum Travel Visa credit card from TD

  • "I've had the TD Visa Platinum Travel card for years and have never complained about the rewards, using the rewards or the use of the card... Redeeming for travel, etc, is very easy through TD for Expedia. A high fee has always been credited back due to my bank portfolio level with TD Bank...so I have no complaints at all, I would highly recommend this card and TD Bank! Satisfied card holder!" - Drmoy1
  • "It is a great card with great rates, and we never had any real issues with it. The interest rate is also very good, so yes all is good with this card" - Joshua M

How does the TD Platinum Travel Visa* Compare?

Td platinum travel visa* vs. td first class travel ® visa infinite* card.

The TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card and the TD First Class Travel ® Visa Infinite* Card are both tailored for travel enthusiasts, but they cater to slightly different needs. While any card you choose ultimately depends on your individual travel and spending habits, the TD First Class Travel ® Visa Infinite* card shines with better earn rates and insurance (including emergency medical).

Yes, the TD First Class Travel ® Visa Infinite* charges $50 more in its annual fee, but just like the TD Platinum Travel Visa Card, that fee is waived in the first year. Also, the First Class card gives you an annual TD Travel Credit of $100 with Expedia For TD.

For frequent travellers, especially those who prefer to book through Expedia, the TD First Class Travel® Visa Infinite* Card offers more value and benefits.

TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card vs. TD Aeroplan ® Visa Platinum Card

Both cards charge the same annual fee which are both waived in the first year. They both feature the same travel insurance (and sadly both miss emergency medical travel insurance), purchase security, extended warranty and mobile device insurance.

These cards are virtually identical, except for one crucial difference: the points.

You either earn TD Rewards Points or Aeroplan ® points. With TD, you can book your travel through Expedia or use the “book-any-way” redemption method which reduces your point value, but you can fly anywhere on any airline. With TD’s Aeroplan ® card, you get Aeroplan ® points allowing you to book with Air Canada and its partner airlines.

Essentially, if you bank with TD and love their rewards program, be sure to take advantage of bundle discounts on their chequing, saving, insurance and mortgage. If you’re not loyal to a bank, and love the Aeroplan ® program, go with the TD Aeroplan ® Visa Platinum.

Is the TD® Platinum Travel Visa credit card worth it?

The TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card is best suited for those who frequently use Expedia for their travel bookings. With its generous welcome bonus, high earn rate on dining, groceries, and Expedia bookings, it offers significant value. However, if you're looking for more comprehensive travel perks, there might be other cards in the market that better suit your needs. The biggest benefits of this card are its earn rate and flexibility in point redemption. The main drawback is the lack of premium travel perks like airport lounge access.

Eligibility requirements of the Rewards Visa credit card from TD Bank

To qualify for the TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • You must be a Canadian resident.
  • You must be at least the age of majority in your province or territory.

There is no minimum income requirement for this card. However, it is important to have a credit score in the good to excellent range.

Is the TD Platinum Travel Visa* worth it?

The TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card offers value for frequent Expedia users with its high earn rate on bookings, dining and groceries. Its comprehensive travel insurance and flexible point redemption enhance its appeal. However, its worth depends on individual spending habits and the annual fee's perceived value.

Is the first-year annual fee really waived for the TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card?

Yes, the TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card often offers promotions where the annual fee is waived for the first year, providing immediate savings for new cardholders.

How do I earn the maximum welcome bonus for the TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card?

To earn the maximum welcome bonus, you have to make a purchase within the first 90 days of activating the card, plus spend at least $1,000 in that same time period.

How does the TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card's rewards program benefit frequent Expedia customers?

The card offers a higher earn rate for travel bookings made through ExpediaForTD.com, groceries and recurring bill payments allowing frequent Expedia users to accumulate TD Points faster.

Earning TD Points with your Platinum Travel Visa*

Earning TD Points with your Platinum Travel Visa*

The TD Points program is quickly growing in popularity and for good reason. It’s an incredibly flexible points program that lets you earn rewards on your daily purchases and redeem them for things like travel, merchandise, a credit on your account, and a few other crazy things that will blow your mind. The TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card offers you 3 accelerated points categories to help you bank even more points on the essentials, such as:

Up to 6 points per $1 on travel purchases

Travel purchases made with your card earn the most rewards with 6 TD Points per $1 spent online through the exclusive Expedia for TD portal, or if you book through the portal by telephone. Also, there is no annual spending cap on Expedia for TD purchases.

Up to 4 points per $1 on groceries and restaurants

You’ll earn 4.5 TD Points per $1 spent when you use your TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card to buy groceries at eligible grocery stores and restaurants. Be careful though, not all stores that sell groceries qualify as a grocery store. To get 4.5 points, the store must have a Merchant Category Code (MCC) that classifies them as a grocery store or restaurant in the Visa network.

To know for sure if your favourite grocery retailer qualifies, you can always call TD at 1-800-983-8472. The accelerated earn rate applies to all eligible grocery and restaurant purchases up to a total annual spend of $15,000 a year combined for groceries, restaurants, and bill payments. Once you hit the annual spending limit, the earn rate drops to 1.5 TD Points per $1.

Up to 3 points per $1 on recurring bill payments

Do you have recurring monthly bills? That’s a rhetorical question, of course you do. To earn 3 TD Points per $1 on your monthly recurring bills, set them to automatically charge your TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card each month. Eligible recurring bill payments include online streaming subscriptions, insurance premiums, magazine and newspaper subscriptions, cell phone bills, membership fees, etc.

As long as the merchant accepts pre-authorized payments and is classified as “recurring payments” through the Visa network, then you’re good to go. However, there is a $15,000 annual spending cap on this too. Once your combined total recurring bill payments, grocery, and restaurant charges hit $15,000 in a year, the earn rate drops down to 1.5 TD points per $1 spent.

Get 1.5 points on everything else!

All other purchases on your  TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card , outside the accelerated rewards category, earn 1.5 TD points per $1. You also earn 1.5 TD points per $1 once you exceed the $15,000 annual spending limit on groceries, restaurants, and recurring bill payments set up on your card.

Bonus points at Starbucks!

TD and Starbucks have teamed up to help coffee lovers score more points on their guilty pleasures. You can earn bonus TD Points when you link your TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card to your Starbucks Rewards account. You’ll earn 50% more TD Rewards Points and 50% more Starbucks Stars. From there, you’ll double dip both your TD Points and your Starbucks Stars when you make eligible purchases through the Starbucks app.

Beware of spending caps & the impact on earning points!

We love getting max points on the essentials, but it’s not a free-for-all. There is an annual spending cap of $15,000 combined across groceries, restaurants, and recurring bill payments. Once you exceed the maximum spend, your earn rate drops to 1.5 points per $1 until it reset the following year.

Having said that, there is no limit on the actual number of points you can earn. Even though the rate at which you earn points might drop if you hit the spending limit, you don’t stop earning points on any of your card purchases. That means you can earn limitless points with your  TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card . Cha-ching! Oh, and your TD Points never expire either.

Redeeming your TD Points

TD credit cards are catching the eye of savvy points collectors and growing in popularity. That little green logo offers something for everyone. The TD Points program is flexible enough to make globetrotters and home-bodies equally happy. Here’s how to redeem your TD Rewards Points:

Best value when you redeem for travel

The TD Platinum Travel Visa* is a travel card, hence the name, so you’ll get the best redemption value on travel and travel-related purchases through the Expedia for TD portal. If Expedia for TD doesn’t have what you’re looking for, you’ll get the next best redemption value on travel purchases through any other travel provider of your choice.

Better yet, your points can be applied to travel-related charges on your card like taxes, fees, and even excursions booked through your vacation resort! And there are no blackout dates or seat restrictions to worry about either. Your TD Points must be redeemed in 200-point increments on travel purchases.

Redeem for a credit on your account

If cash is king for you, then you can redeem your TD Points for a credit on your credit card bill to help pay down the balance. However, you need to have a minimum points balance of at least 10,000 TD Points in order to redeem for a statement credit. Then, every increment of 400 points over the minimum is worth $1 which can be redeemed as a credit to the account.

Attention Amazon shoppers!

You can redeem your TD Points for purchases on Amazon.ca. It’s super easy. Just add your TD Platinum Travel Visa* to your Amazon account and Amazon will automatically enroll your card, unless you opted out of automatic enrollment. When you’re ready to purchase the items in your cart, select your TD Platinum Travel Visa* as the method of payment and choose how many TD Points you’d like to redeem. Their value will be deducted from your total to cover all or a portion of your purchase.

Free stuff from TD

You can also redeem your TD points to get free stuff from the TDRewards.com online catalogue. You can score free name-brand merchandise across every possible category as well as gift cards to stores, restaurants, and gas stations. Keep in mind, redeeming for merchandise and gift cards yields the lowest redemption value for your points.

Free lattes? Yes please!

Not only can you double-dip your Starbucks Stars and TD Points, you can also redeem your points for free Starbucks purchases too! If you’re having a hard time kicking that pricey caffeine addiction, the TD Platinum Travel Visa* can save your budget. Just swap your TD Points for Starbucks Stars. Then, redeem your Starbucks Stars for free coffee, handcrafted drinks, food, and eligible merchandise. You need to redeem at least 700 TD Points for Starbucks Stars.

Attention students! Is this the best redemption feature EVER?

Are student loans killing your vibe? What if I told you the TD Platinum Travel Visa* could slash your tuition bill? The TD Points program is the first I’ve come across that lets you redeem points towards your student loan balance and other education costs. TD Points can be used to purchase education credits on HigherEdPoints.com to pay off or pay down student loans or put directly towards your tuition.

And the best part? They don’t have to be your own TD Points either. Anyone can use their eligible TD Points to purchase education credits for you too. Thanks, Nana! Credits can be purchased in $250 increments (62,500 points) and transferred to your HigherEdPoints account.

From there, you have 2 years to redeem your education credits for payment on federal/provincial student loans or directly towards tuition at participating post-secondary schools. And for what it’s worth, education credits are the second-highest redemption value after travel. I can’t even!

Travel insurance benefits on your TD Platinum Travel Visa*

As a travel card, TD Platinum Travel Visa* isn’t the best on the market, but it does not disappoint either. Not only do you get the best redemption value on your points when used to book travel through Expedia for TD, you also get a host of other perks too. TD even provides a nifty Credit Card Travel Insurance Verification Tool to help you see what travel benefits are available on your TD credit card. That’s an incredibly handy feature I haven’t seen from other credit card providers.  Here’s a rundown of the complimentary travel insurance benefits you get:

Complimentary travel insurance benefits on your TD Platinum Travel Visa* card

Other travel perks & discounts

Travel insurance isn’t the only perk you get. Your TD Platinum Travel Visa* also gives you special privileges at airports, on-demand access to help when you need it, other travel discounts, and a smarter way to spend. Here’s how:

Travel assistance

In the event you experience a personal emergency while travelling, you can access Emergency Travel Assistance Services toll-free at  1-800-871-8334. Knock on wood!

When you need a rental

If you like to sight-see on your own terms while travelling, or you got rear-ended on your way to a tourist attraction, you can save money with car rental discounts. TD Platinum Travel Visa* holders get at least 10% off car rentals through participating Avis Rent-A-Car and Budget Rent-A-Car locations in Canada and the U.S., and at least 5% off participating international locations.

For the road trippers

Do you love to road-trip? Your TD Platinum Travel Visa* gives you the option to purchase a membership to TD Auto Club. You’ll get access to emergency roadside assistance 24 hours a day. Now you can hit the open road with confidence.

For the smart shoppers

Savvy shoppers don’t just bargain hunt, they protect their purchases from loss and damage. When you make a purchase with your TD Platinum Travel Visa* , you automatically get Purchase Security and Extended Warranty protection on most new items. If something is stolen or damaged within 90 days from the date of purchase, you’re covered. You also get Mobile Device Insurance on eligible mobile devices purchased with your card.

Rates & fees on the TD Platinum Travel Visa*

Rates & fees on the TD Platinum Travel Visa*

Rewards cards typically come with an annual fee, and the TD Platinum Travel Visa* is no exception. At $89 per year, you get quite a bit back in complimentary perks. It’s not a terrible fee compared to other cards on the market, and it’s rebated for the first year too. You can add additional cardholders to your account. The first one will cost $35, also rebated for the first year, and the next ones are free.

The interest rate is pretty standard on this card. There’s really nothing to write home about here, especially if you know how to use a rewards card properly . Ideally, you want to pay your balance off in full every month, which makes the interest rate on this card irrelevant. If you rack up a balance and don’t pay it off in full by the due date, interest charges start to cancel out the benefit of your points – so don’t do that!

Are you eligible for the TD Platinum Travel Visa* card?

Despite the word “platinum” in the title, the TD Platinum Travel Visa* is a rewards card that is fairly easy to get. There is no minimum income required to qualify, which is great news for students, homemakers, those with lower or non-traditional incomes, as well as retirees. To qualify for this card, you must be at least the age of majority in the province where you live and be a permanent resident of Canada.

Sometimes, a credit card will explicitly require post-bankrupt applicants to be discharged from bankruptcy for at least 7 years in order to be eligible. However, the TD Platinum Travel Visa* does not have any explicit requirements for post-bankrupts, leading us to believe you may be able to get this card if you have a bankruptcy or consumer proposal on your credit file.

However, we are only speculating based on the eligibility requirements of other cards. Approval is never guaranteed and your application is subject to a hard credit check . Applicants with a good credit score are more likely to be approved.

Who is the TD Platinum Travel Visa* card for?

At first glance, the TD Platinum Travel Visa* looks like a great card for wanderlusters who want to convert their daily purchases into fabulous adventures. But upon closer inspection, it’s actually a fantastic card for anyone who wants a flexible rewards program to save money on major budget-busters.

Specifically, three kinds of people come to mind; students, Starbucks lovers, and die-hard Amazon shoppers. Heck, it’s a great card for parents who want to help their kids with the cost of post-secondary education.

Travel might not be top of mind now that the cost of living just hit cruising altitude. As a Starbucks addict and devout Amazon shopper myself, I was already flexing my digits to hit that Apply button. It’s not often that a travel card can help you bank some serious savings on stuff other than travel; like what you need, what you want, and the simple joys that make life worth living.

Luckily, you don’t have to choose between a white and green cuppa-joy or diapers for the tiny humans who make you want to inject that coffee directly into your bloodstream. With the TD Platinum Travel Visa* you can do both!

Lattes earn points, and points can cover those Amazon diaper purchases. Or your kid’s undergrad program. The HigherEdPoints program is a complete game-changer and I’d like more credit cards to hop on board with this.

And now that you can bank bonus points when the green siren calls, your guilty pleasures can actually bankroll your way to a cap and gown. Don’t worry, when you’re ready to travel again you’ll still score sweet deals on Expedia for TD. Until then, you might as well save money on simple joys.

TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card

Application must be approved by September 3, 2024 to receive this offer

Signup bonus:, annual fee:, interest rates:, earning rate:.

The TD Platinum Travel Visa *  Card is an entry-level credit card that lets you earn points in the bank’s proprietary TD Rewards program.

The TD Platinum Travel Visa* Card   is a card geared towards students, newcomers to Canada, or individuals with new or recovering credit files who want to build a strong relationship with TD while earning some travel rewards.

Bonuses & Fees

Until September 3, 2024, the TD Platinum Travel Visa * Card is offering up to 50,000 TD Rewards Points † as a signup bonus, distributed as follows:

  • 15,000 TD Rewards Points† upon first purchase †
  • 35,000 TD Rewards Points† upon spending $1,000 in the first three months †

The card has an annual fee of $89, which is currently rebated for the first year. † Note that, in order to receive the first-year annual fee rebate, you must activate your card and make your first purchase on the account within the first three months after account opening, and you must add any additional cardholders by September 4, 2024.

The first supplementary card on each account costs $35, and the current first-year annual fee rebate also applies to the first supplementary card. Meanwhile, additional supplementary cards are free. †

To be eligible for this offer, you must apply and be approved for the card on or before September 3, 2024.

Earning Rewards

The card’s earning rates are as follows:

  • 6 TD Rewards Points † per dollar spent on eligible Expedia ® for TD purchases †
  • 4.5 TD Rewards Points † per dollar spent on eligible groceries and dining purchases †
  • 3 TD Rewards Points † per dollar spent on eligible recurring bill payments set up on your account †
  • 1.5 TD Rewards Points † per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases †

Since TD Rewards Points can be redeemed optimally at a value of 0.5 cents per point, these are equivalent to a 3%, 2.25%, 1.5%  and 0.75% return, respectively.

Redeeming Rewards

The best way to redeem TD Rewards Points is by booking travel through Expedia ® for TD, an online travel portal operated in partnership with Expedia ® .

You can book flights, hotels, car rentals, vacation packages, and anything else that you would normally be able to book via Expedia ® . You’d apply your TD Rewards Points to the purchase at a rate of 200 points = $1, or 0.5 cents per point.

If you’d rather not book through Expedia ® for TD, you can also redeem TD Rewards Points directly against any travel purchase that you purchase with your TD Platinum Travel Visa * Card. However, the rate isn’t quite as competitive at 250 points = $1, or 0.4 cents per point.

Redeeming for statement credits or gift cards is also possible, although the rate is even less appealing at 400 points = $1, or 0.25 cents per point.

Generally speaking, you should always strive to redeem your TD Rewards Points for travel through Expedia ® for TD whenever possible, in order to maximize their value.

TD Rewards Points never expire as long as you’re a cardholder. If you cancel or switch your card to a different product, you’ll have 90 days’ time to redeem your TD Rewards Points before they go away, although you’ll lose the ability to book through Expedia ® for TD for 0.5 cents per point, and you’ll be limited to redeeming against any travel purchase for only 0.4 cents per point.

Perks & Benefits

The TD Platinum Travel Visa *  Card comes with car rental discounts at Avis and Budget: 10% in Canada or the US, and 5% internationally. †

Insurance Coverage

As an entry-level credit card, the TD Platinum Travel Visa *  Card offers a relatively basic set of insurance provisions.

Emergency medical coverage, trip cancellation insurance, and trip interruption insurance are all noticeably absent.

While flying, cardholders are covered for up to $500 in flight delay insurance† and an aggregate amount of $1,000 for lost, stolen, or delayed baggage. †

Airport lounge access can transform an otherwise gruelling layover into a relaxing respite. Lounges may offer free snacks and drinks (including complimentary alcoholic beverages), free Wi-Fi, plentiful comfortable seating, dedicated work areas, showers, sleep pods and even spa services. It’s little wonder, then, that for many frequent fliers, lounge access is an especially coveted credit card feature. Let’s look at the lounge access cards that currently top the category in Canada.

MoneySense tip

Credit cards with airport lounge access come with an annual fee, but these fees vary significantly between cards. When searching for the perfect card, don’t get caught up on the fee alone. Knowing how much you fly in an average year, and what other travel perks you plan to make use of, will help you determine which card offers the most value.

Airport lounge access programs in Canada

How to get free access to airport lounges in canada.

Several travel credit cards offer access to airport lounges for cardholders. Depending on the credit card, you can get a certain number of lounge visits every year in specific countries around the world. If you want to get free unlimited access to airport lounges, consider a credit card like the American Express Platinum Card which includes the American Express Global Lounge Collection. The card comes with a fairly large annual fee, like most credit cards with airport lounge access, but the card’s rewards and benefits may outweigh the fee if you are a frequent flier and value the ability to visit airport lounges when you’re traveling.

DragonPass vs. Priority Pass: Which should you choose?

DragonPass and Priority Pass are third-party lounge access membership providers. Up until 2022, Priority Pass was the primary partner for most Mastercard and Visa airport lounge programs. However, DragonPass has become the partner of choice for most credit card lounge access programs for cards like the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege and the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite . You can still access the Priority Pass program with the American Express Platinum Card , however.

Frequently asked questions

Several different credit cards give you access to airport lounges. Select Mastercards provide membership to the Mastercard Travel Pass program, and some Visa cards offer membership to the Visa Airport Companion Program . Both Visa’s and Mastercard’s airport lounge programs are provided by DragonPass, which features access to over 1,200 lounges worldwide. The American Express Platinum card gives cardholders access to The American Express Global Lounge Collection, the largest lounge collection available.

As airport lounge access is an especially desirable perk, credit card providers generally make it obvious on their websites if they offer airport lounge access. Often, this perk is listed under “travel benefits.” The best way to make sure is to contact your provider directly and ask if it provides airport lounge access, and if any free visits are included. Note that some credit card providers give a free membership to a lounge program but don’t include any free visits. Lounge visits can cost upwards of USD$32 each, even with a membership.

TD First Class Travel vs TD Aeroplan: How to Choose

Georgia Rose profile photo

The main difference between TD First Class Travel and TD Aeroplan is the rewards system.  Aeroplan is Air Canada’s reward program, while the TD First Class Travel card is tied to TD Rewards Points. Thinking about where you shop and how you like to redeem your points can help you decide which of these cards is the better fit.

What is TD Aeroplan?

What is td first class travel.

  • TD First Class Travel vs. TD Aeroplan: Which is better?
  • TD First Class Travel cards

TD Aeroplan is the name given to a group of TD credit cards that earn Aeroplan points . You can use the points to buy things like flights, hotel rooms, car rentals, merchandise and more via Air Canada’s Aeroplan redemption platform.

TD offers four Aeroplan credit cards:

  • TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite .
  • TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum.
  • TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege.
  • TD Aeroplan Visa Business.

TD First Class Travel is another name for one of TD’s rewards cards: the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite card. It’s the only card from TD with the name First Class Travel, but not the only card that earns TD Rewards Points. The TD Platinum Travel Visa, TD Travel Rewards Visa and TD Business Travel Visa also earn TD Rewards Points.

TD First Class Travel rewards

The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite card earns between two and eight TD Rewards Points per CAD spent, depending on the purchase category.

  • 8x TD Rewards Points on travel bookings made via the Expedia for TD platform.
  • 6x TD Rewards Points on groceries and restaurants.
  • 4x TD Rewards Points on recurring bill payments.
  • 2x TD Rewards Points on everything else.

Pros of TD First Class Travel

  • High reward earn rates compared to TD Aeroplan cards.
  • Travel TD Rewards Points can be redeemed with multiple booking platforms.
  • Includes travel insurance, such as medical, baggage delay and flight cancellation.

Cons of TD First Class Travel

  • Only one First Class Travel card to choose from.
  • Highest earn rate is only for Expedia purchases.

TD First Class Travel vs TD Aeroplan: Which is better?

TD Aeroplan beats out First Class Travel when it comes to points value. Based on NerdWallet analysis, the average value of 1 Aeroplan point is worth 2.23 cents. To compare, you can expect to get around 0.25-0.5 cents per TD Rewards Point, according to NerdWallet analysis. These values depend on the redemption method you choose.

That’s not to say TD Aeroplan cards are better than the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite card. If you don’t fly with Air Canada, for example, Aeroplan points may not be as practical. Look at features like annual fees , reward categories, redemption options, interest rates and insurance perks when making your decision.

Luxury travel for less: Your guide to free airport lounge passes

O ne of the most stressful aspects of travel involves the airport experience. When you’re not being hassled at security checkpoints, you’re spending way too much time (and money) finding reasonably priced, healthy food options and a comfortable place to relax before a flight. Airport lounges can solve these options by providing a serene and comfortable oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of busy terminals.

These exclusive spaces can run the gamut from basic to ultra-luxurious, with some even providing complimentary spa services. There are many reasons travelers pay to access airport lounges, but with the right credit card or membership, you may be able to get airport lounge passes for a steep discount—or even free.

What is an airport lounge pass?

An airport lounge pass is a ticket or membership granting access to select airport lounges. These lounges give travelers a more comfortable environment to relax before a flight. They typically offer comfortable seating, complimentary food and drinks and high-speed Wi-Fi. The more premium lounges even offer a la carte dining options, shower suites, nap rooms, and spa services. The quality of a lounge typically corresponds to the airline it's operated by. Premium airlines like Singapore and Emirates typically offer superb lounges, especially abroad.

Meena Thiruvengadam, travel expert and founder of Travel With Meena, finds the most value in airport lounge access when traveling abroad. “Having a comfortable place to shower before a long flight, do my skincare routine or nap during a long layover makes travel feel less exhausting. And there’s nothing like getting where you’re going—or getting home—and not feeling completely wiped out.”

Can you get into an airport lounge for free?

Generally, accessing an airport lounge for free is only possible if you hold a premium class ticket or have a membership or credit card that grants you access. International business or first-class passengers often enjoy lounge access as part of their ticket benefits. Some lounges also extend complimentary access to military members in uniform. Additionally, those who have an active lounge membership can sometimes bring up to two guests without paying a fee.

Most other travelers can gain entry to airport lounges by purchasing a day pass. These typically cost between $25-60, depending on the lounge. Some lounges are so exclusive that you can’t even pay for access but need a specific membership or credit card. The American Express Centurion lounge is a prime example, restricting access to Amex Platinum and Centurion members only. Even guests have to pay a $30-$50 fee to accompany a qualifying cardmember into the lounge unless the cardmember reaches a spending threshold.

8 ways to get into an airport lounge

While spending $25-60 on a lounge pass may be worthwhile to some, attaining these luxurious spaces doesn’t have to cost a thing. Credit cards, particularly those with travel-centric perks, often grant lounge passes or memberships as part of their cardholder benefits. Additionally, standalone lounge memberships or programs like Priority Pass offer a wider range of lounges across different airlines. Savvy travelers can also secure free access through elite status within loyalty programs or by booking premium cabin seats using airline miles. Here are eight ways you can secure airport lounge passes for your next trip:

Airline rewards cards

Many airline credit cards grant cardholders access to their lounges. These cards typically carry high annual fees but include airline lounge membership, along with perks like free checked bags, priority boarding and annual credits towards airline elite status. Examples of airline cards that offer lounge access include the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®, the United Club℠ Infinite Card and .

Travel rewards cards

Many premium travel rewards cards provide airport lounge access at thousands of lounges worldwide through networks like Priority Pass. Additionally, many of these cards offer annual travel credits that can be applied towards airport lounge visits, though each card is different. For example, The Platinum Card® from American Express offers $200 in annual airline fee credits, plus access to a vast lounge network that includes Amex Centurion, Escape, Lufthansa, Delta Sky Club, Plaza Premium and Priority Pass lounges.

Elena Nikolova, founder of Muslim Travel Girl , often travels solo or with her four-year-old daughter. She recently renewed her high-annual-fee Amex Platinum Card for the lounge benefit alone: “The ability to relax, eat, drink, freshen up and not chase a child over the terminal is what makes travel enjoyable. We can't always travel in business class (although I try my best) so having a card that gives you free access even in economy and independent of an airline is what makes it worth the high fee.” Nikolova estimates she’s saved $2,000 on lounge passes in the last year alone, all while flying budget airlines sound Europe.

Priority Pass

Priority Pass is a network of over 1,400 airport lounges worldwide, including airline lounges and select restaurants. Annual memberships range from $69 to $469, with higher tier memberships including unlimited lounge visits. Priority Pass can provide excellent value for frequent travelers, though guest access comes with a $35 per-visit fee. The great news is many premium travel cards offer complimentary Priority Pass Select membership, which includes guest access. Examples of these cards include the , and Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card.

For those who don’t have access through credit cards or memberships, many lounges offer day passes that can be purchased at the airport. These passes allow one-time access in exchange for a fee of $25-60, though the exact fee varies by lounge. Some credit cards even include annual day passes as a cardholder perk, like the United Explorer Card . Day passes are ideal for occasional travelers seeking a comfortable space during layovers or delays.

Guest access

Some lounge memberships allow cardholders to bring guests into the lounge, free of charge. Guest access policies can vary in terms of the number of guests allowed. For example, Priority Pass Select members can bring two guests with them free of charge. The same goes for Capital One Venture X and Capital One Venture X Business cardholders, who can bring up to two additional guests into Capital One lounges without charge.

Fly international business or first class

Passengers flying business or first class on international itineraries also get complimentary lounge access. If the airline doesn’t have its own lounge, qualifying passengers will typically be directed to a partner airline’s lounge. While this seems like a far-fetched idea, premium cabin travel is actually pretty attainable through airline miles and credit card points.

Airline elite status

Nearly every domestic frequent flyer program offers lounge access as a perk to members who achieve elite status. You don’t have to be a top-tier elite member either to take advantage of this benefit – it’s available for most mid-tier elite members on international flights:

  • Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan: Complimentary lounge access for MVP Gold, Gold 75K and Gold 100K members traveling on Oneworld airlines to destinations outside of the U.S., Canada or Mexico.
  • American Airlines AAdvantage: Complimentary lounge access for Platinum, Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum members traveling on international flights operated by American or partner airlines to select international destinations.
  • Delta Air Lines SkyMiles: Complimentary lounge access for Gold, Platinum and Diamond Medallion members traveling in Delta Premium Select cabins or Delta One.
  • United Airlines MileagePlus: Complimentary lounge access for  United Premier Gold, Platinum and 1K member traveling on an international Star Alliance flight.

Military members

Members of the U.S. military traveling in uniform and their families can access USO airport lounges free of charge. In addition, many domestic airlines offer complimentary lounge access to qualifying military personnel and their families. To gain access, most lounges require military members to be in uniform or present an I.D. with leave orders.

The takeaway

Whether you’re a frequent flyer or an occasional traveler, airport lounges can vastly improve your travel experience. Lounges can elevate any trip by providing a quiet place to unwind and load up on snacks and drinks without paying outrageous airport prices. By leveraging the right credit cards and taking advantage of membership-based benefits, you can enjoy free airport lounge passes without breaking the bank.

Data research and analysis by Tia Duncombe and Debra Toews.

Simply put, many major hotel chains have loyalty programs to entice repeat customers. Most of those loyalty programs have an affiliated credit card—just like how you can have an Optimum Points card and a PC Financial Mastercard that earns them, too. By spending with your “hotel” card, some of which are broader travel reward programs that offer hotel perks, you can earn points and perks at that hotel chain or travel program.

There is quite a bit of overlap between the best hotel credit cards in Canada and the best travel reward credit cards, simply because they both offer rewards pertaining to travel—and of course, a hotel stay is part of that experience. While every program is different, both rewards cards earn points that are redeemable for travel expenses, including hotel stays. Hotel credit cards often offer a favourable redemption rate for hotels, meaning that you can redeem your points for great value at a selection of hotels affiliated with the brand. For example, with a hypothetical reward program, 100 points could translate to $1 in gift card or airfare value, but $1.50 at a select hotel chain.

Every hotel credit card differs, but there are a few benefits that seem to be a throughline in the category. Often, the types of benefits hotel credit cards can offer include:

  • Increased points earnings: Hotel loyalty credit cards will often offer you more points per dollar when you spend at the associated hotel chain.
  • Status upgrades: Often, hotel loyalty programs will have a tiered structure indicating member status. Each tier usually brings a bump in perks that can range from room upgrades to free breakfast. Some hotel cards offer ways for you to quickly move up in tiers, while others offer an automatic bump in status for getting the card and/or spending a certain amount per year.
  • Annual free award night: Many hotel credit cards will offer you a free stay once per year as a reward.
  • Travel insurance coverage: Many hotel credit cards are tailored to travellers (or overlap with a travel rewards card). Naturally, travel insurance coverage is included in this, and can range from emergency medical and common carrier insurance, to hotel/motel burglary insurance, trip delay and cancellation, and lost or delayed baggage.
  • Airport lounge access: Many hotel credit cards offer airport lounge access, with a number of free or discounted visits per year.

Credit card hotel points are similar to most credit card reward points—you’ll earn them on most (if not all) your purchases, and often at a higher rate per dollar spent in a particular category. They can be redeemed in a variety of ways. With hotel credit card points in particular, they can usually be earned at a more favourable rate when spending at that hotel chain in particular, and can be redeemed there too. Most can also be transferred to other loyalty or frequent flyer programs, some at a 1:1 ratio.

Two well-known hotel loyalty programs are Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honours.

Marriott Bonvoy

Marriott Bonvoy is the loyalty program for Marriott Hotels, which include The Ritz Carlton, JW Marriott, Sheraton, Delta Hotels, Westin, Four Points and more. The program can be joined for free, but is also included with certain co-branded credit cards (including business cards) that earn even more Marriott points.

All members of this program get discounted rates on hotels, free Wi-Fi and points toward free nights. Those who stay at the hotels under this brand’s umbrella can eventually earn elite status, meaning they get even more benefits like late checkout, free breakfast and more.

You earn points either through hotel stays or credit card spending. Once you earn enough points, you can redeem them for free award nights, travel packages, flights, merchandise, gift cards and car rentals. You can also transfer points to airline partners.

Hilton Honours

Hilton Honors is the Hilton hotel chain’s loyalty program, which includes hotels like Hampton, Embassy Suites and Doubletree. Like Marriott Bonvoy, you can sign up for free or through a co-branded credit card to start earning points, though they don’t currently offer a credit card in Canada. You earn points by spending at Hilton hotels, with partners or by spending on your Hilton co-branded credit card.

Once you are a member, you can begin to level up to different tiers of membership, achieving Silver, Gold or Diamond status. With just a membership, you get perks like free Wi-Fi and a discounted rate. Even Silver members get their fifth hotel night free, and the perks increase with each tier of membership, eventually including things like executive lounge access and room upgrades.

Choosing a Hotel

The first step in choosing a hotel credit card is determining which hotel brand would work best with where you want to travel, or travel most often. Many hotel brands are chains that have thousands of locations worldwide, so if you tend to travel more broadly, those brands might be more beneficial to your needs.

What is a sign-up bonus?

Some cards offer sign-up bonuses for new cardholders. Often, these offers mean earning a number of points just for signing up or spending a certain amount within a period of time. Many often waive the annual fee as well.

What is an earning rate?

An earning rate is the number of points you earn per dollar spent on the card. These earning rates can vary by spending category. With hotel cards, they typically earn you more points at the specified hotel chain or partner brands.

Other Benefits

Other benefits, like award nights, travel insurance, lounge access and status upgrades are common among hotel cards.

If you’re a frequent traveller who has a preference for a particular hotel brand (or chain of hotels), you should consider a hotel credit card to meet your needs, earn points and offer perks.

If you’re planning to do a lot of travelling, you might want to maximize your hotel credit card to get the most value. This would involve earning points at a solid rate, as well as getting as many free award nights and upgrades as possible.

If you want a card that gives you free nights faster, choose the Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card, since you’ll get one free award night per year. You’ll also get 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year that can help you achieve elite status faster. The business version of this card, Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card, has the same offer, too.

That said, it might be better to pick a card that aligns well with your spending habits, as that will earn you the most points in the long run.

Which American Express card is best for hotels?

The American Express Platinum Card is the best option for luxury hotel benefits like automatic room upgrades, late check-out and free amenities unique to each property.

Is it better to book a hotel with a credit card?

Most hotels require a credit card on file for cancellations and damages. Using a credit card to book a hotel can also earn rewards and discounts.

What credit score do you need for a hotel credit card?

Credit scores between 660 and 900 are generally considered good, very good or excellent. Some hotel credit cards will accept scores starting at 600, while others require scores over 740.

Which credit card gives discounts on hotels?

The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card automatically gives you Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status, giving you access to member rates, among other perks.
