Safed, Tiberias and Mount Meron – 1 Day Tour

About Bein Harim

Bein Harim takes you on a spiritual trip to the gravesides of some of the holiest and most important rabbis of the last millennium.

We arrive at the city of Tiberias on the shores of the Sea of Galilee where we visit the graves of several important historical Jewish figures – Maimonides, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and the Baal HaNes. We make a brief stop at a diamond factory then continue on to the ancient city of the Kabalah, Safed. Here we visit the Ari HaKodosh synagogue, the Isaac Luria Visitors Center and we stroll through the Artists Quarter. Next we continue to Mount Maron and visit the graves of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and Rashbi where Lag B’Omer is celebrated each year by thousands of believers.

We begin by traveling north past Herzliya and Natanya up the Mediterranean coast of Israel then turn inland and travel through the plain of Armageddon where we can see Megiddo (Chronicles II 35:20-27).

We reach the city of Tiberias on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. The city was established in the 1st century by King Herod and archaeological excavations have revealed structures from the Mishnah and Talmud periods (1st – 5th centuries). We visit the ancient grave sites of two esteemed sages.

Rabbi Meir Baal HaNes was believed to be a miracle worker, he was one of Rabbi Akiva’s pupils and his grave is one of the most visited in the country.

Although the original structure which marked the grave of Rabbi Meir was destroyed by an earthquake in 1837, two stone pillars remained marking the grave’s location. Today a new structure which was built in 1867 marks the rabbi’s grave and the two original pillars have been incorporated into the tomb. From a distance it is possible to see the distinctive blue and white domes of the tomb.

At the grave site there are separate prayer areas for men and women and study areas for both Ashkenazim and Sephardim. Near the grave site are vendors selling religious souvenirs, candles, books and posters of revered rabbis.

We visit the tomb of Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon (Rambam) who penned the fourteen volumes of the important Mishne Torah and is respected as a great sage, philosopher, scholar and doctor. Ramban passed away in Egypt in 1235 and his final wish was to be brought to the shores of the Kinneret to be buried in Tiberias.

We continue on to Safed, a hill top city and one of Israel’s four holy cities. We walk through the historic city and the narrow alley ways of the Old City, we visit the Ari HaKodosh synagogue, the Isaac Luria Visitor Center and the Artists Quarter.

Our next stop is at Mount Meron where Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai (Rashbi), a 2nd century sage, is buried. Rashbi wrote the Zohar, the primary text of the Kabbalah movement. It is believed that he penned the Zohar while in hiding from the Romans following the destruction of the Second Holy Temple.

Rashbi is believed to have passed away on Lag B’Omer, the same day that a plague ended which had taken the lives of Rabbi Akiva’s pupils. Rashbi’s grave is the site of Lag B’Omer celebrations each year when thousands of Jews gather there to light bonfires, dance, rejoice and also traditionally give their three year old sons their first haircut.

The tomb is used for prayer both by men and women in separate areas and outside the tomb you can find stalls selling religious mementos, head coverings, religious books and artifacts.

View of a narrow street in Tsfat/Safed, Israel

  • Destinations

Safed (or Tzfat) is the ancient mystical centre of kabbalah, where you will wander through time worn cobbled streets, exploring age old synagogues, ducking in and out of art galleries, craft shops and charming cafes.

Tzfat’s historical sites are diverse: from the graves of important Rabbis, to the impressive crusader Citadel, and the Great Stairs built by the British to separate Jews and Arabs. Tzfat is a magical place where the ancient stones invite you to reach and touch them, to feel the layers of human history, and the breeze asks you to listen out for the tales it whispers.

In addition to teaching you about Jewish mysticism, a tour of Tzfat will expose you to the beautiful ancient synagogues of the city, and if it’s of interest you can meet a Kabbalistic artist, take part in a candle making workshop (Tzfat is famous for its long, plaited Havdalah candles), and visit a Kabbalah centre where mystics will study your name and reveal truths about you!

Past to the Future - The Story of the Israeli State - 11 days

I thoroughly enjoyed the Past to the Future - The Story of the Israeli State tour with Consolidated Tour Operators, Boaz, our tour guide, had a deep understanding of the history of the area, which made the experience come alive. The way he presented the places he took us, and in the order he presented them, gave us a real appreciation of Israel and its place in history. His attention to detail, easy-going personality, and expertise gave us an on parallel tour! Using Consolidated Tour Operators for our days in Israel was a treat. Not having to deal with or wait for strangers in a larger group also made the experience more personal. Will definitely recommend Consolidated Tour Operators and Boaz to friends and associates who are planning a trip to Israel! Many thanks, Lisa

The Story of the Israeli State - 10 Days

My husband and I had never been to Israel and booked this tour as a “bucket-list” event. Our tour guide, Efraim Native, was the best - he was a history professor, knew philosophy, religion, politics, economics, abd engineering - answering every question we had. He was friendly, helpful and made excellent food recommendations. Our tour covered Tel Aviv (our new favorite city), Haifa, the Golan (do not miss the Hula Nature Preserve), and Jerusalem (Old and New). We added the Masada/Dead Sea tour at the end. Finally, we chose the 5-Star hotel option and stayed in true luxurious accommodations). We will use Tour Radar and Click Tours again!

Safed: Getting There

While public transportation in Israel is excellent, Safed's location as a remote mountain town in middle of Israel's northern upper Galilee Mountains makes this city a bit of challenge to get to sometimes. Read on to find out the best ways to reach Safed whether coming by bus or by train, or by a combination of both.

Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Safed

Unfortunately, Israel's excellent and easy to travel rail system hasn't yet reached the city of Safed, or any region in the interior area of the north of the country. However, this doesn't mean you can't still utilize Israel's rail lines to reach this mountain city. If you are in Jerusalem then take a bus from Jerusalem's central bus station to Tel Aviv. You can choose to disembark in Tel Aviv at either the New Central Bus Station or the Arlozorov Station. You will then switch from the bus to the train at these stations. In both locations you will have about a two minute walk from the bus station to the train station. However, the New Central Bus Station in Tel Aviv is more than a bit seedy and run down. If possible, take a bus to the Arlozorov Station in Tel Aviv which is an open air, outdoor station. It is a more pleasant experience.

Next, you will want to board a train from Tel Aviv to the city of Akko (known in English as Acre). From Akko you will then switch to a bus to Safed.

Jerusalem (by bus) --- Tel Aviv (switch to train) --- Akko (switch back to bus) --- Safed

This option allows for the greatest flexibility because buses leave Jerusalem for Tel Aviv several times an hour from very early morning until late night and trains leave Tel Aviv for Akko at least twice an hour.  They even run once an hour through the night. Buses from Akko to Safed also run about twice an hour starting at 6:00am and ending around 22:15. The bus from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv takes approximately one hour, depending on traffic, the train from Tel Aviv to Akko takes one and half hours, and the bus from Akko to Safed takes one hour and twenty five minutes. Total travel time on this route from Jerusalem to Safed takes four hours, not including waiting, switching and standing time.

Jerusalem To Safed Direct

For a more direct route from Jerusalem to Safed you can take a bus direct.

Jerusalem (by bus direct) --- Safed

There are direct buses from the Jerusalem Central Bus Station to the Safed Central Bus Station. Bus number 982 departs from Jerusalem seven times a day beginning at 9:18am. The last bus is at 23:18. On Friday buses cease running early and buses will run every hour from 9:18am until 13:18. The cost for this bus is 40nis and the total travel time is three and half hours.

Tel Aviv to Safed Direct

Tel aviv (by bus direct) --- safed.

There is also one direct bus daily from Tel Aviv to Safed.  It departs from the New Central Bus Station in Tel Aviv at 17:00 and then pickups at the Arlozorov Bus Station at 17:05. The trip costs 45nis and takes approximately three and half hours, if you are not held up by traffic. This should put you in the Safed Central Bus Station at 8:30pm. On Friday the bus departs Tel Aviv 12:30pm, 12:35 at Arlozorov, and arrives in Safed at 16:00. The bus from Tel Aviv to Safed is bus number 845. Total travel time on the bus is three and half hours.

We were graciously and warmly welcomed and began with a discussion of Druze culture and religion. Next we donned aprons and set about preparing a multi-course dinner. We were two couples and needed to avoid various ingredients (including sesame and garlic) due to food intolerances. Our hosts did a fabulous job accommodating our requirements—better and more cheerfully than most restaurants. We’re looking forward to receiving the recipes so that we can prepare these dishes for friends back in the U.S. Both the food and the cultural exchange were highlights of our Israel vacation. The views from our hosts’ home were to die for. Read more Written May 6, 2023

Culmination is we got to eat the produce, which was a tasty culinary feast. We are vegetarian, which was no problem, though I understand many of the dishes are for carnivores. I could not fault this experience and will merrily do it again if friends come to visit. Full marks for everyone who made it happen. Really original. Read more Written April 10, 2023

  • kellygE3434ER 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A truly special and memorable experience—and my favorite meal in Israel! I cannot recommend GalilEat strongly enough! Our guide, the excellent Baruch of Touring With Baruch, suggested that we do an Arabic cooking class while on our trip. To be honest, I’m not sure I would have gone for this if not for the fact that my mom, who was on this trip to Israel, did something similar when she visited India and said it was a fabulous experience. I really value eating well when I travel, and I love visiting restaurants. So to do this home cooking class meant not going to a restaurant one night. Well thank goodness we did this home cooking class! Because, as it turns out, it was my favorite meal in Israel. More importantly, it was a beautiful experience of the profound joy that is making new friends in other countries, and a reminder that language barriers and geographical distance are no match against everyone’s common humanity. How it worked: Baruch drove us to the home we were visiting, which was the home of a lovely woman named Pnina. There, we also met up with Paul, who owns and runs GalilEat. When we arrived, we visited in Pnina’s living room and asked her questions about her life in Israel and her Druze faith. Paul functioned as the translator. My family and I knew nothing about the Druze, and it was utterly fascinating to learn about their long-ago break from the Muslim faith, their history across time, and their lives in modern-day Israel. Pnina happily fielded or questions, answering all of them, and Paul was the ever-ready middleman, making the conversation feel natural and seamless. Pnina also asked some questions about us, which we were just as happy to answer. Eventually, we moved into Pnina’s kitchen, quite literally rolled up our sleeves, and got cooking! In advance of our arrival, she made the more labor-intensive and time-consuming dishes of our dinner. We helped her with a salad, an appetizer, and this crazy delicious bread that I’m still thinking about. At some point prior to our trip, I mentioned to Baruch that I’d recently been introduced to the wondrous dessert that is knafeh. He asked Paul if we might be able to make knafeh, and Pnina very graciously granted this request! I was blown away by everyone’s kindness and flexibility, as it was so much fun to make fresh knafeh (and oh my goodness was it good). In time, dinner was ready, and all of us—Pnina, Paul, Baruch, my six family members, and I—gathered in Pnina’s dining room and broke bread together. It was so special to share in a meal with strangers-turned-friends. We had lively conversation, and Paul always took care to translate to Pnina so she could remain just as engaged as the rest of us. And, as I said, the food was phenomenal. All in all, this was way better than a restaurant! It was a way more personal experience than any restaurant, no matter how great their food, could have ever offered. I will never travel overseas again without scheduling a similar home cooking experience whenever possible. It’s such a unique and fun way to learn about a country, its people, its culture. It’s a truly immersive experience, and one that comes with the bonus of incredible food. I enthusiastically recommend an evening with GalilEats—it’ll be among your most memorable experiences on your trip to Israel. Read more Written January 17, 2023

A very special highlight of our trip was a visit (arranged by Galileat) to a Druze family for a hands-on cooking class. Our hosts had us all very busy in their kitchen preparing a multi-course meal from fresh, local ingredients. Then, the payoff: eating what we'd help prepare with our hosts. It was delicious. But our visit to their home was much more than the cuisine. Before our fun in the kitchen, we spent an hour in conversation with our hosts in their living room, sippiing tea. They shared stories of their family and explained much about the Druze faith and community customs. It was a wonderful experience---much enhanced by the active participation of Paul Nirens (Galileat)! Read more Written January 16, 2023

Paul and Pnina were extremely knowledgeable and very engaging with our three children, ages 13, 11 and 6.
