Having burst out of San Fransisco, California, US in the early ‘80s, Dead Kennedys went on to become one of America’s most successful punk bands with their uncompromising sound and vitriolic political satire.

Formed in 1978 by Jello Biafra (vocals), Klaus Flouride (bass), Bruce Slesinger a.k.a Ted (drums) and East Bay Ray (guitars), the Dead Kennedys became a household name in the local scene, through relentless performances in the Bay Area. An early independently-released single, “California Über Alles” displayed their visceral political angst, attacking the then governor, Jerry Brown. Equally biting, “Holiday in Cambodia” followed, as a stinging attack on the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Dead Kennedys had become an underground sensation both in the US and UK, with their debut album, “Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables” finding a strong following upon its release in 1980.

Ted left the band after the album release, replaced by Darren H. Peligro, with the Kennedys also creating their own label, Alternative Tentacles during this time (1981). Their first release on the label, the EP, “In God We Trust,” featured the controversial single, “Too Drunk to Fuck” which broke into the UK Top 40 despite being banned from airplay. A second full-length, “Plastic Surgery Disasters” followed after, with Alternative Tentacles quickly becoming a respected label in the punk scene.

Returning with their third album in 1985, “Frankenchrist,” the Dead Kennedy’s found themselves at the centre of an obscenity lawsuit, charged with distributing pornography to minors due to H.R. Giger’s album artwork of garish illustrations of penises and anuses. The case was eventually dismissed, with Biafra becoming a prominent voice for the advocacy of free speech.

Despite the court victory, the Dead Kennedys were unable ensure the band’s longevity, with 1986’s “Bedtime for Democracy” being their last official release. A posthumous compilation, “Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death appeared a year later, signalling the end of the Dead Kennedys burgeoning career.

However, after a long period of solo ventures, the band did decide to reunite in 2001, for a select number of live performances. Whilst without Biafra, the band went on to find a new energy, embarking on various global tours since, helping to continue the popularity of one of the nation’s most successful punk bands.

Live reviews

You would be hard pressed to find a band as iconic and revered in the punk scene as Dead Kennedys. Jello Biafra and the boys have been playing their unique politically driven style of punk since the late 70's, taking a long hiatus from 1986-2000 while members moved on to their own projects, such as Jello Biafras Guantanamo School of Medicine.

The Kennedys play huge (for the punk genre) crowds of ballistically wound up punks, some of which have been attending these shows since inception in the late 70's. The variety of people in the crowd is awe inspiring, and Jello's warbling voice has been speaking to the youth for decades. The atmosphere is electric whenever they take the stage.

Their first song at the show I saw was California Uber Alles -- one of their most adored and iconic songs. They played through tons of hits from Holiday in Cambodia, Bedtime for Democracy, and Frankenchrist. The ingrained "DK" logo was on shirts and leather jackets throughout the crowd, as one of the most recognized punk logos in history.

By the end of the surprisingly informal and personal show, right up next to the stage with the band, I was hoarse and drenched in sweat. I still remember the thriving mosh pit and passionate performance put on, even though it's been nearly 15 years since that night. The guys are getting old, and haven't played a show since 2010. It's rumored that they will come back for a series of short shows in the next few years, so keep a keen ear out and don't miss one of the most brash and wonderful bands the punk genre has ever witnessed.

Report as inappropriate

I went into this concert a little anxious, this would have been my first Dead Kennedys concert and I had no idea what to expect given Jello no longer does vocals. First off I wasn't too keen on Catholic Action, they were quite an odd choice to go with in my opinion, but as soon as Dead Kennedys came on Skip and the rest absolutely blew it out of the park.

When Skip wasn't singing or prancing/dancing along the stage he was pissing off the crowd. Going on about football v soccer, Brexit, Boris Johnson, a doctors appointment he had recently, basically his entire life story which the crowd wasn't too happy about, but that was the intention!

These funky old men have so much life and energy, especially Skip with all his antics. Skip said we were all too old to be punk but the least he could do was ACT like it.

All in all it was a great experience and if they do anymore concerts soon (and I have the money) you better believe I'll be grabbing tickets again. Dead Kennedys mean a lot to me and it's so great to see they're still kicking and they're still... Dead Kennedys is the best way to put it!

Controversial from the offset, punk rockers the Dead Kennedys reunited in the early 00s to tour their much loved discography to the devoted and the new converts to their music. Known for the mass stage invasions and provocation to fight at the early gigs, the band are a little too old for that kind of behaviour now and the venues they now play are not quite similar to the raucous basements from which their sound originates from.

Their crude and sinister sense of humour never appealed to their homeland yet in the UK, the spiritual home of punk, the band did relatively well commercially. It feels something of a homecoming as the crowds warmly welcome the band back for an anthemic opener of 'Kill The Poor' and 'I Kill Childern'.

By those song titles you may have realised why the Americans never got it, but they were missing out on a hugely talented band and they perform with just as much passion to this day as they did during the height of their career. There was some jostling in the crowds but no venue-wide fights tonight, however Dead Kennedys proved punk is definitely not dead.

I have to confess that I have never seen The Dead Kennedys live before and, thus, wasn't sure what to expect.

But from the moment they hit the stage, their show was a high energy roller coaster - in the best possible way! The (relatively) new frontman Skip provided such an excellent show, constantly engaging a receptive audience with excursions off the stage and straight into the pit, that time flew by and nobody even on the balcony was left standing still. in short, an unforgettable show.

The show was great! Of course all of us ol punters are old and the crowd was small, which made it feel like the good ol days. Unfortunately I was misinformed about when they would go on so I only got to see the last 30 mins of the show but we walked in without paying a cover! Got to hear Holiday in Cambodia, California Über Alles, viva Las Vegas, and Nazi punks fuck off! They put on a really good show but it ended way too early

The evening at Sunshine Theater was very enjoyable. The doors opened at a few minutes past seven and the first band, Runaway Kids started a few minutes early. Runaway Kids, the Dwarves, TSOL and the Dead Kennedys all performed well with minimum time between each set. The Dead Kennedys were very enjoyable. I recommend seeing them. In my opinion the vocals should have been louder in the mix for all of the bands.

I just walked out of an abomination of what was supposed to be the DK's, The singer was like a Republican-Bro Kararoke train wreck. He managed to insult the DTES, made jokes about our heroin, made a comment about "the natives being restless," and blamed the crowd for Trudeau. This was at the Rickshaw, in the DTES. Fuck that guy.... It's not the Dead Kennedys without Jello.

Don't give them your money.

Brilliant show! Lots of energy, good old punk sound, great songs.

Could have played longer, only 16 songs... But including the best ones like Nazi punks fck off, California uber alles, Holiday in Cambodja.

Great theater too, Effenaar has good sound and lights.

I didn't go. I didn't realize when I bought the tickets that Biafra isn't in the band anymore. When I found out, any interest I had in going was gone. Obviously I'm not a "super-fan" of DK or I would have known this before hand. Maybe it was a good show?

Things To Do

Music and concerts, music and concerts | from scandal to punk legacy, dead kennedys return to boston.

“We always tended to be on the smart side of the punk spectrum,” guitarist East Bay Ray said this week from his Bay Area home. “And we have a unique sound that you’re not going to hear anywhere else. Most of the Ramones are gone. Part of the Clash is gone. And let’s face it, we’re not going to be around forever. Our shows are getting bigger and bigger — and I can remember the first time we played Boston, doing the Rathskellar. They always seemed to like us in Boston, even with our name.” They return to play Big Night Live on Wednesday.

The band’s instrumental lineup — Ray, drummer D.H. Peligro, and bassist Klaus Flouride — is the very same one that played the Rat and the Channel back in the early ’80s. But they’re long estranged from original frontman Jello Biafra, whose place has been taken by Skip Greer (he’s Biafra’s third replacement; former child star Brandon Cruz was the first).

“It helps that Skip is a team player. He has a skill that we didn’t know he had, to insult the audience in a friendly way. We’ll be in Europe and he’ll make fun of their football. In some ways he’s like Johnny Rotten, except that he hasn’t gone right-wing.”

The Dead Kennedys haven’t gone right-wing either, despite a recent dust-up between them and Biafra — which started after a post supporting Mitt Romney appeared on the band’s Twitter feed.

“That came from our social media person, who cops to it. But certain people don’t care about the truth and like to make themselves bigger by cutting other people down.”

The real problem, says Ray, is a longtime dispute between the band and Biafra, who was also the owner of their record label.

“You know why he’s saying these things — because the record label skimmed $76,000 and wouldn’t pay the band. So he’s got these weapons of mass distraction, shall we say.”

After winning a legal battle, the band acknowledged that Biafra had likely withheld royalties due to an accounting mistake.

“Every human makes mistakes. So you have the choice of learning from it, or denying the mistake ever happened.”

That said, Ray said he’d do a reunion tour if a promoter tried to swing one.

“That’s actually happened, and it wasn’t Klaus, DH or me who said no.”

Meanwhile, the current lineup is exclusively playing songs from their ’80s catalog. Ray said they actually tried debuting new songs onstage a few years back, but dropped them when the audience didn’t react.

“I feel the same way when I see a show. When I see Iggy Pop, I want to hear ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog.’ The songs we have are really enjoyable to play and they’re good songs; that’s why we’re still playing ’em.”

Besides, he says, the topical references still hold up — even “California Uber Alles,” about Jerry Brown’s failed presidential candidacy.

“That’s really about hippie decadence, so it still applies. ‘Bleed for Me’ was about oil, and that’s as big a deal as ever. And ‘Nazi Punks’ (which was strongly anti-Nazi) is still timely. I wish the context for these songs was different, but the situation is actually worse.”

Then there’s their most notorious song, about being too drunk to make love — but of course, that isn’t quite what it’s called. And now we can finally ask if that was a true story.

“It was. But the innocent person shall remain nameless.”

Dead Kennedys Announce ‘2022 Mix’ of ‘Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables’

Dead Kennedys Announce ‘2022 Mix’ of ‘Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables’

Photo via Dead Kennedys’ Official Instagram

Dead Kennedys have shared they will reissue their seminal 1980 debut album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, on Sept. 30 via Manifesto; the new rendition has been dubbed 2022 Mix .

The latest edition of the beloved LP was remixed from the original multitrack tape format by the renowned mixing engineer, Chris Lord-Alge. The updated release also features essays written by Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Megadeth’s Dave Ellefson, Pennywise’s Fletcher Dragge and more. In addition, Remix 2022 includes unseen imagery of the defining San Francisco punk group.

Guitarist East Bay Ray offered a statement via press release, he shared: “When the label suggested we remix Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables Klaus Fluoride and I were skeptical.” He concluded, “But we thought, ‘Why not? Let’s give it a try.’ And, wow, Grammy-winning maestro Chris Lord Alge was interested! It turns out he’s a big fan of the band. We tried one song, ‘Chemical Warefare.’ What Chris came back with was amazing. Everyone heard the difference, so we said, ‘All right, let’s go!’”

Lord-Alge added his thoughts on the project, “Revisiting Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables was an inside peek at a band packing so much excitement onto tape for every song. The style and playing has such drive and spirit.” He continued, “The big challenge for me was keeping it honest to its original sound and not letting it become modern but improving the separation and clarity. A major chapter of history for Dead Kennedys.”

Additionally, Grohl shared a memory about the influential nature of the band and the impact they had on him as a teen; he wrote, “I went to the DK’s Rock against Reagan show in Washington. The Dead Kennedys were playing, and were one of my favorite bands. There were police helicopters all over the place and buses filled with riot police. As a 13-year-old-kid, that was like my own little revolution.”

Dead Kennedys's debut: still satirical, still subversive, now with extra shine

The dead kennedys' hardcore punk classic fresh fruit for rotting vegetables has been sonically retooled for a new generation.

A benchmark of the political hardcore movement, the Dead Kennedys ’ debut left a significant stain upon its original 1980 release. Vocalist Jello Biafra ’s incisive and satirical lyrics coupled with East Bay Ray’s subverted surfrock guitar stood out against the scene’s increasingly generic sound. Early DKs material was influenced by the militancy of Crass and also took direction from The Clash by addressing wider societal issues as opposed to single-issue politics.

Brimming with ideas and tunes despite the lyrical confrontation, the DKs lampooned everything from the American dream to the punk scene itself and even nihilistic misanthropy – as on the shockingly jaundiced Forward To Death .

The long-running feud between ex-vocalist Biafra and the rest of the band who now control the Dead Kennedys' back catalogue (guitarist East Bay Ray, bassist Klaus Flouride, drummer DH Peligro) has seen Biafra voice his displeasure over this release, issuing a dismissive ‘let the buyer beware’ communiqué.

Fresh Fruit’s original release sounded toppy and low-fi – a raw garage tone that was arguably part of its appealing passion and urgency. Nonetheless, mixed by veteran industry engineer Chris LordAlge, this version delivers a fuller clarity of sound, most notably on early classic like the knowing Holiday In Cambodia , the distressing Chemical Warfare and the comical yet subversive cover of Viva Las Vegas .

Breaking News

Music | may day and gaza protests sweeping the bay area wednesday, music | legendary punk rock acts gathering for one huge bay area concert, punk in the park comes to the bay area.

The Dead Kennedys -- from left, Klaus Flouride, Ron "Skip" Greer and East Bay Ray -- return to the Bay Area to perform at Punk in the Park.

The popular Orange County-based festival, which has traditionally taken place in November just outside Santa Ana, is making its maiden voyage to Northern California this month.

It’s being called the Punk in the Park American Road Trip and it brings an amazing cast of California punk-rock greats to the Cow Palace in Daly City for a full day of fun on May 4.

There will also be a whole lot of beer being sampled, given that Punk in the Park doubles as a craft beer festival.

Yet, we are far more interested in the Dead Kennedys and Black Flag than we are in hops and barley, so we’ll stick to the music in this article.

And since one day of punk is clearly not enough, the organizers — Orange County-based Brew Ha Ha Productions — are also hosting the Punk in the Park Pre-Party on May 3 at the same venue.

On both days, the music will be taking place in the parking lot area outside the Cow Palace, as opposed to inside the historic barn-shaped building that once hosted such Rock and Roll Hall of Fame acts as The Doors, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and KISS.

Doors open at 5 p.m. May 3 and 12 noon May 4. Tickets are $29.99-$49.99 for the May 3 Pre-Party and $49-$149 for the May 4 show, punkinthepark.com. Also see the website for more information about the craft brew tastings and for a list of participating breweries.

The lineup is a true who’s who of punk rock royalty, yet it’s likely not every attendee will know their Descendents from their Adolescents. So, we’re offering a Punk in the Park primer with details on many of the bands performing over the two days. We’ll start with those playing the main festival on May 4 and then add a few May 3 Pre-Party acts at the end.

Descendents

The Manhattan Beach legends get top billing at Saturday’s festival and will likely look to close out the NorCal edition of Punk in the Park with a set of fun and edgy tunes that marry power pop and hardcore sounds. The band remains best known for its 1982 debut “Milo Goes to College,” which should make the Desert Island list of basically all punk fans. The “Milo” in question is lead vocalist Milo Aukerman, who indeed has split his time between going to college — he holds a PhD in biology from UC San Diego — and fronting the Descendents.

Listen to: “Suburban Home,” “I’m the One,” “Good Good Things,” “Hope.”

The Vandals

The Orange County act can be thought of the Blink-182 of its day — only way more interesting. Rising out of Huntington Beach in the first half of the ‘80s, the Vandals won fans over with a mix of catchy pop-punk riffs and equally snarky and tasteless humor. Their signature song is “My Girlfriend’s Dead” and they once titled an album “Live Fast, Diarrhea,” which pretty much tells you what you need to know about the Vandals.

Listen to: “My Girlfriend’s Dead,” “Anarchy Burger (Hold the Government),” “Don’t Stop Me Now” (Queen cover)

Dead Kennedys

There’s never been a better punk rock album than this Bay Area band’s legendary debut — “Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.” It’s smart, funny, shocking, innovative and, without a doubt, still completely relevant and captivating some 44 years after it was released in 1980. Sure, famed vocalist Jello Biafra left the fold long ago. But as long as East Bay Ray is playing guitar in the band, the Dead Kennedys will still be well worth seeing.

Listen to: “California Uber Alles,” “Holiday in Cambodia,” “Kill the Poor,” “Let’s Lynch the Landlord,” “Chemical Warfare” (all of which are on “Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables”)

The Hermosa Beach act has likely sold more stickers and T-shirts than records over the decades, as fashion conscious mall shoppers continue to buy up anything boosting the band’s striking logo. Black Flag is also known for introducing Henry Rollins, who sang in the group before going on to achieve fame as a spoken-word artist, TV producer, comedian, leader of the Rollins Band, among other pursuits. Yet, there are plenty of other reasons to turn out to see the hardcore band’s set, including the chance to groove along with guitarist Greg Ginn.

Listen to: “Rise Above,” “TV Party,” “Nervous Breakdown”

The Dickies

They’ve been called “the clown princes of punk,” yet this San Fernando Valley-born band is certainly no joke when it comes to putting on a great live show. Forty-five years after delivering its debut album — 1979’s “The Incredible Shrinking Dickies” — the group is still delighting fans with its high-energy mix of originals and fantastic covers.

Listen to: “Paranoid” (Black Sabbath cover), “Banana Splits” (Banana Splits cover), “Killer Klowns”

The Adolescents

The Fullerton group was one of the better early SoCal hardcore punk acts, a fact that was greatly underscored with the release of its terrific self-titled debut (aka “The Blue Album”) in 1981. One has to wonder what the band’s legacy might be today if it hadn’t undergone so many lineup changes early on. Tony Reflex (aka Tony Cadena, Tony Montana, Tony Adolescent, etc.) is the sole remaining original member in the band.

Listen to: “Amoeba,” “L.A. Girl,” “Wrecking Crew”

The Long Beach troupe — whose name stands for True Sounds of Liberty — is playing a punk festival, so maybe it will focus the setlist on its hardcore efforts. Yet, we like its more melodic rock stuff — found on such albums as 1986’s “Revenge” and 1987’s “Hit and Run” — just as much as the punk tunes. So, in other word, whatever T.S.O.L. wants to play is fine with us.

Listen to: “Nothing for You,” “Flowers by the Door,” “Superficial Love”

Suicidal Tendencies (May 3)

It’s your chance to experience the mighty Mike Muir, who is the only remaining original member of this iconic thrash outfit that got its start in Venice in 1980. Muir is a force of nature at the mic and well worth the price of admission. Also, Robert Trujillo was once a member of the band, before signing on to play bass for Metallica, and now his son Tye has joined the fold.

Listen to: “You Can’t Bring Me Down,” “Institutionalized,” “Nobody Hears”

Guttermouth (May 3)

Another Huntington Beach product, Guttermouth formed in 1989 and went on to deliver nine albums over the next 17 years. The group’s most recent full-length offering is 2006’s “Shave the Planet,” featuring “Upside Down Space Cockroach,” “The 23 Things That Rhyme with Darby Crash” and a mess of other songs that definitely should be covered on “American Idol.”

Listen to: “She’s Got the Look,” “Hit Machine,” “Bruce Lee Vs. The KISS Army”

A benchmark of the political hardcore movement, the Dead Kennedys' debut left a significant stain upon its original 1980 release.
