Event starts {{ data.showing_start_time }}, the killers, "imploding the mirage tour" with special guest johnny marr.

The Killers have announced they will be heading back on the road with a stop at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. to celebrate their Pressure Machine and Imploding The Mirage albums, along with their much-loved catalogue of global hits.

The Killers will release their seventh studio album, entitled Pressure Machine, on Island Records on August 13, 2021.  The album was co-produced by the band, Shawn Everett, and Jonathan Rado (of Foxygen), all of whom worked together on The Killers’ critically-acclaimed album Imploding The Mirage, released last year.

When the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the promotional run and worldwide tour for The Killers’ majestic, critically-acclaimed 2020 album Imploding the Mirage, “everything came to this grinding halt,” says frontman Brandon Flowers. “And it was the first time in a long time for me that I was faced with silence.  And out of that silence this record began to bloom, full of songs that would have otherwise been too quiet and drowned out by the noise of typical Killers records.”  Indeed, for the first time since 2004, the relentless momentum and pressures of being in a globally-renowned, stadium-shaking band stopped.  Enter Pressure Machine: a view into the everyday realities of a small American town with a stark, tough beauty, and The Killers’ most restrained and resonant album yet.

A video from Brandon about Pressure Machine can be seen now via Apple Music.

A quieter, character-study-driven album, Pressure Machine lives squarely in Flowers’ hometown of Nephi, Utah, a close-knit community of 5300 people with no traffic lights, a rubber plant, wheat fields, and the West Hills.  Nephi is the place Flowers spent his formative years (10-16), saying “had it not been for advancements in the automotive industry, Nephi in the 90s could have been the 1950s.”  The album’s songs are based on the memories and stories of people that impacted him growing up, interspersed with commentary from current Nephi locals about their town.  “We were discussing [Brandon] moving to Nephi as a kid and being stuck in the middle of nowhere,” says the band’s drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. “And during Covid-19, it started to feel like we were all in the middle of nowhere.”  Concurs Flowers, “I discovered this grief that I hadn’t dealt with,” he says, “many memories of my time in Nephi are tender.  But the ones tied to fear or great sadness were emotionally charged.  I’ve got more understanding now than when we started the band, and hopefully I was able to do justice to these stories and these lives in this little town that I grew up in.”

The resulting record is an aural document of growing up - and living - in the American Southwest, told from a myriad of perspectives.  For the first time in his life, Flowers had complete lyrics before a note of music was put to tape.  No stranger to inhabiting different characters in songs, on Pressure Machine he steps into the shoes of some of the people whose lives he watched unfold as a teen.  The album weaves the threads of Flowers’ signature lyricism throughout his career into a perfect whole culminating in the most elegant album The Killers have ever made.

Through its characters and also its title, the album squares up to the unbending pressure of the American dream compounded by religious disenchantment.  A born optimist, moments of beauty inevitably shine out of the grief of Flowers's songs:  the healing arrival of summer, the first crop of hay, sweeter skies.  Pressure Machine’s stories detail the real life personal battles, overwhelming regrets, local tragedies, and the opioid epidemic that hit Flowers’ hometown, as well as every hometown in America.  Flowers sings about the choices people make, for better and for worse, and the consequences of those choices; the ones who were left behind, and the ones that can’t be forgotten.

Pressure Machine’s album cover image was shot on the highway just outside Nephi, taken as photographer Wes Johnson passed a roadside inspirational display set up by a local Baptist church.  Johnson took dozens of incredible images of Flowers’ hometown throughout the early part of 2021, many of which are featured in the album’s packaging for the physical edition.

The Killers Couldn’t Tour Last Year. So They Wrote an Ambitious New Concept Album

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

In the early days of the pandemic, just as it was becoming clear that the Killers ‘ 2020 tour wasn’t going to happen, Brandon Flowers found that his mind kept drifting back his formative years in the tiny, remote Utah town of Nephi. “There was a nostalgic longing in the air and a little bit of sadness,” the singer says. “I started thinking about where I was in the Nineties, and these stories just sort of blossomed out.”

Those stories form the basis of the upcoming Killers record Pressure Machine , due out August 13th. It’s a concept record about life in Nephi told from the perspective of various townspeople that touches on everything from prescription drug abuse and poverty to crime, homophobia, and depression. Despite the bleak tone of the record, there are touches of hope and joy sprinkled throughout it.

“When I was writing these songs, I was thinking of things like Sherwood Anderson’s book Winesburg, Ohio or that book Pastures of Heaven [by John Steinbeck],” Flowers says, “where’s it’s all these short stories that take place in this one setting. For some reason, I had the audacity to try it myself. Once I realized they were going to take place here and they were going to be true stories, everything just really fell in our laps.”

He wrote the lyrics before any of the music was created, scattering photos of Nephi around his keyboard for inspiration. Once he was ready, the band gathered at a studio in Cotati, California, with producers Jonathan Rado and Shawn Everett, the same team that worked on last year’s Imploding the Mirage . This was early 2020 and the pandemic was just beginning to rage. “It was tough,” says Flowers. “Shawn leans towards hypochondria. He was wearing glasses, goggles, and three masks in the studio. It was crazy. [Bassist] Mark [Stoermer] also struggled, and he didn’t make it into the studio. But we also wore masks and we got tested regularly. We were pretty diligent.”

The album begins with “West Hills,” which is about a desperate Nephi townie who gets busted with hillbilly heroin. “They got me for possession of enough to kill,” Flowers sings, “the horses that run free in the west hills.”

The record somehow turn even darker on “Terrible Thing,” which centers on a gay teenager who’s contemplating suicide. “There were kids I grew up with who I didn’t know until years later that they were gay,” says Flowers. “It must have just been so hard. I think the world is moving in a more positive direction and a more inclusive direction, but this was still in the Nineties and people kept this stuff close.”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Most of the songs are drawn from Flowers’ own Nephi memories or things he’s read about in recent years, but on “Desperate Things” he veers off into a fictionalized tale of a cop who falls in love with a domestic-abuse victim, and winds up murdering her husband. It’s a tale that could have easily fit on Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska , and it’s unlike anything in the Killers catalog.

“I basically took a story that was a scandal in town when I had lived there, and I took some liberties in the third verse and turned it into a murder ballad,” says Flowers. “In a typical pop or rock song, there’s just two verses. It’s not until you start getting into Springsteen and [John] Prine and stuff that you get to a third or fourth verse. But it helps you flesh out a story.”

“In Another Life” and “In the Car Outside” dwell on the dashed dreams and bitter regret of middle age, but the album ends with genuine hope on “The Getting By.” “Maybe it’s the stuff it takes to get up in the morning,” Flowers sings, “and put another day in sun that holds you till the getting’s good … This whole town is tied to the torso of God’s mysterious ways.”

The album features guest appearance by Joe Pug, Sara Watkins, and Phoebe Bridgers, and it also marks the return of Killers guitarist Dave Keuning. He sat out Imploding the Mirage and the last few tours to deal with personal matters and burnout stemming from years on the road. He wasn’t involved in the entire creative process, but “In the Car Outside” and “A Pressure Machine” both began with his guitar lines, and he plays on other songs on the album.

“It was cool having him back,” says drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. “You always realize when somebody re-enters the room, or leaves the room, what they bring. It was nice to have his element back in there. We’ve been playing together for about 20 years. It felt good.”

They were nearly done with the record when they decided to send an NPR employee to Nephi to record conversations with actual townspeople. He came back with incredibly personal stories so vivid that the band decided to begin each song on the album with snippets of them.

“We were in mastering mode, but it was the last ingredient needed to complete this project for us,” says Vannucci. “It gave us more of a real-life accounting, more so than our interpretations through songs and music. … It was people with their accents and their stories. It stitched it all together for us.”

The band played a virtual gig in late June for Australia’s Splendour in the Grass festival, with Keuning and Stoermer back onstage with the group for the first time in years, but they don’t plan on launching a formal tour until March when they head down to New Zealand. They hit North America in August 2022, and you can preorder tickets here .

But first up is an August 21st appearance at Central Park’s We Love NYC concert alongside Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, LL Cool J, Elvis Costello, and many others, with tickets available online now . They’re also playing Delaware’s Firefly Festival on September 24th, and Florida’s Sandjam Music Festival in early October. As of now, according to the band, Keuning plans on joining them on the road, but Stoermer will stay at home. Touring bassist Jake Blanton will once again take his spot.

“We’re going to do a warmup gig at Terminal 5 [in New York City] before the Central Park show,” says Flowers. “We’ve done some incredible gigs at Terminal 5. I keep thinking of what song we’re going to open with. I hope I can keep my composure. Playing live is a part of our identity and something we’ve missed out on, that connection with people and that community.”

A lot of bands are on the road right now, including Dave Matthews Band, Phish, and Green Day, but the Killers are being super cautious by not booking any major headlining gigs until 2022. “We don’t want to be the band that brings back Covid, the K variant,” says Vannucci. “There’s a lot of conjecture involved in touring and liability. And just out of general respect for people out there and keeping everyone healthy, we just wanted to be careful about that and not jump the gun.”

And even though they’ll have two full albums packed with songs that they’ve never played live by the time they next hit the road, they’re already thinking about yet another record. It’s still in the very early stages. “We got together for a week in San Diego a little while ago at Dave’s house,” says Flowers. “It was the four of us together, the first time we’d done that in years. But we need to rehearse in January for the tour. I don’t know if we can find time [to finish another album], though we’ll definitely get together again before Christmas.”

In the meantime, Flowers is anxious to share Pressure Machine with the world. And working on the album finally gave him a chance to view Nephi in a very different light. “As a teenager, I wanted out,” he says. “It wasn’t until much later that I developed more of an understanding of the beauty of the place. I was so free. People didn’t even have to lock their doors. I had a different sort of upbringing there. I can appreciate that now.”

The Killers announce new album; tour coming to Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — The Killers have announced a new album, "Imploding The Mirage," and a tour that's coming to Salt Lake City along with it.

The "Imploding the Mirage Tour" will bring The Killers to Vivint SmartHome Arena on Wednesday, August 19, 2020.

The rock band's new album was recorded in Park City, Utah, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.

In a news release, the band stated:

Imploding The Mirage also features a brilliant array of collaborators, another first for the band who have typically kept guest spots on their albums to a minimum. The list of featured artists includes Lindsey Buckingham, kd lang, Weyes Blood, Adam Granduciel (War On Drugs), Blake Mills, and Lucius.
Imploding The Mirage leaves the grit and glitter of Vegas behind for something more expansive and triumphant. (Literally. Flowers moved his family from the parched flats of Vegas, NV to the lush mountains of Utah before beginning work on the record.) It’s an album that also pushed the band out of their musical comfort zone, exploring new terrain and referencing the albums in their collection that filled them with a sense of romance and camaraderie in their youth.

Utah Concert Review

Relive the Utah Concert Experience!

The Killers

The Killers w/ Johnny Marr• August 30, 2022• Vivint Arena

Reviewed by Kevin Rolfe

Photographed by the great Rob Loud

Rocker, Joan Jett once said, “No one knows what anticipation is anymore.  Everything is so immediate.”  I’m one who tends to generally agree with the Rock N Roll Hall of Famer. However, I might argue that for a concert going fanatic such as myself that these last few years have been filled with nothing but anticipation.  Shows announced in 2019 and 2020 were postponed and rescheduled only to be postponed and rescheduled again.  There was no concert I’ve been anticipating more than The Killers Imploding the Mirage Tour .  Fans of The Killers have been anticipating this concert for almost three years.

Not only that but The Killers hadn’t played Utah since 2018.  That was the night Brandon Flowers had the second greatest flu performance inside Vivint Arena (Delta Center).  Michael Jordan being the first in the 1998 NBA Finals vs The Jazz.  It’s a toss up really because Brandon Flowers was pretty special that night in 2018.

It’s hard to believe I’m sitting at my computer writing this review about what was easily one of the greatest shows I’ve been to.  From the setlist to the crowd,  to the lighting and visuals, to the opener, this was an incredible show from top to bottom. The Killers were in top form.  They are better live right now than at any time in the band’s history.

Johnny Marr

Speaking of the opener.  The Killers invited Johnny Marr,  THE Johnny Marr, to join them on this tour.  Johnny Marr is an alternative music legend.  Best known as the guitarist and co-songwriter for The Smiths, Marr has had an extensive career.  Teaming up with Bernard Sumner of New Order to form Electronic, joining Modest Mouse (who coincidentally were playing about an hour north at Ogden Twilight), and an extensive solo career gave Marr an extensive repertoire to pull from.

I was fortunate enough to observe this concert from the General Admission floor.  I found my spot next to a 6’9’’ former BYU football player.  It was perfect.  No one was going to stand behind him because they couldn’t see.  So as long as I stood right next to him, I’d be able to see and if I stayed close I knew no one would try to push ahead because he wasn’t going anywhere.  Oh yeah, there are some brains behind this pretty face, folks.

Johnny Marr opened with “Armatopia” from his solo catalog.  He quickly followed with The Smiths’ classic “Panic”.  I noticed a loud ovation from the crowd.  Because I was relatively close to the stage (humble brag alert) on the floor I wasn’t aware of how much the arena had filled.  There were very few empty seats.  For the opener! A couple of other solo songs “Night and Day” and “Spirit, Power, and Soul” went over well with the audience.  The next song was probably my favorite of the set.  Mostly because I was really surprised to hear it.

As I mentioned, Johnny Marr teamed up with Bernard Sumner of New Order to form Electronic in the late 80s/ early 90s.  He performed an awesome arrangement of “Getting Away With It”, the band’s biggest hit.  It was fun to see the elation from those in the audience who knew this song.  Electronic was set to go on a US tour in 1990. A tour I had tickets to.  But for some reason, the tour was canceled.  It was amazing to hear this song live after all that time.

I’d say the crowd favorites of Johnny Marr’s set were “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” and the set closer, “How Soon Is Now”.  Both are just massively huge alternative music staples. I felt like if there was someone in the crowd who was too embarrassed to admit (rightfully so) that they weren’t familiar with Johhny Marr, they definitely knew these songs.  The crowd responded with a loud ovation when that resonating guitar reverb played at the beginning of “How Soon Is Now”.  I was impressed with Marr’s voice. His guitar playing was going to be great, but he sounded really good singing these songs. I think his solo music is worth looking into.

He has a new album Fever Dream that was flying off the merch tables inside Vivint Arena.  He was the perfect opener.  By the end of his set, the audience was moving and clearly warmed up. We only had about 30 more minutes left of anticipation and it would be time for The Killers to take the stage!

While the crew was turning over the stage, instead of playing familiar songs over the PA like you’d normally hear, it seemed there was music specifically written for that break.  It felt very subtle, but very Killers.  There was a build to it that brought us right to the moment when the lights turned off and the band was about to walk out.

The lights were off.  The crowd wasted no time getting on their feet.  There was no sign of the band walking out and the crowd was already deafening when the digital screen lit with the Imploding the Mirage album cover.  You want anticipation Joan Jett?  Wait for The Killers to take the stage after the lights go out.  It was probably 90 seconds, but it felt like another three years.  All of a sudden there was movement.  Silhouettes of the band walking on stage.  I could see Ronnie Vannucci Jr. saddle up to his drum kit. The outline of Dave Keuning’s amazing hair was so distinct.

Once everyone was settled, on the corner of stage right a dapper looking donned in a black pinstripe suit and black shirt, backlit Brandon Flowers began singing the opening track on Imploding the Mirage , “My Own Souls Warning”.  I quickly text my friend who was in another section, “Great opener!”.  And it was.  I feel like that song is so underrated.  I felt like it was getting it’s due as Flowers changed the words to, “I just wanted to get back to Salt Lake City” and Vivint Arena shook as the song crescendo’d.

Following “My Own Soul’s Warning” The Killers began “Enterlude” off of Sam’s Town .  I figured it was a just a good transition song for the show with “We hope you enjoy your stay…”.  My friend who came with me said, “Are they going to do ‘When We Were Young’ right now?!” Which is he song that follows “Enterlude” on Sam’s Town . I told him, no way.  That’s been a closer of theirs before.  I don’t tink they’d do it second.  Well guess what, people?  They played “When We Were Young” FOR THE SECOND SONG!!!! Remember that time a tornado came through Salt Lake City and ripped the roof off of the Delta Center?

I think that almost happened for a second time when Keuning played the opening chord to that “When We Were Young”.  I can’t remember the last time I jumped that high and for that long.  My feet might not forgive me for a while, but it was so worth it.  We’re two songs in and the place is in a frenzy.

If you think things mellowed out after that you are sorely mistaken.  The Killers blazed through heavy hitters like “Jenny Was a Friend of Mine” and “Smile Like You Mean It”. Songs like “Shot at the Night” and “Running Towards a Place” went over well.  There was no let down.  Just when I thought, “Ok this is where the show might slow down a bit.”, The Killers played an awesome version of “Human”.  The second the crowd knew what song it was, they made it clear how excited they were for that one.  Throughout the evening The Killers would intro songs in a creative way to add some mystery to what the song was only to reveal it and get a huge ovation.

“Human” was followed by “Somebody Told Me” and are you kidding me?  How many crowd pleasers can one band have?  Even their new single “Boy” crushed.  It would be so easy for me to break down each song.  But we’re almost at 1300 words, folks.  And we’ve still got some things to cover. But quickly, “Runaways” transitioning to “Read My Mind” Brandon Flowers leading the crowd in, “We can’t waiiiiiiiit til tomorrow!” was an epic moment. I love those two songs, so hearing them back to back with that transition blew me away.

One of the best stretches of the night was as the band led up to the encore break.  Brandon Flowers quoted Helen Keller ,“Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it”. He then dedicated one of my favorite songs, “Rut” to anyone who was suffering.  A shortened “Rut” was followed by “Caution” which seemed like it was about to be followed by “All These Things That I’ve Done”.  My friend and I were getting fired up when we heard that intro synth chord.  But there was a bit of a stir.  Brandon Flowers began talking to someone in the audience.  The camera was showing on the screens a sign from a fan asking “Let me play with my heroes”.  Brandon Flowers asked him if he really knew the song.  And then he asked, “Are you at least from Utah?”.

He then invited 18 year old, Alec Andersen to play drums on “For Reasons Unknown”.  I’m assuming that’s what he was requesting to play.  Sometimes I get suspicious that these things are rigged.  But if you look on the setlist, “For Reasons Unknown” is not on there.  They were in fact about to play “All These Things That I’ve Done”.  So I’m choosing to believe this was a spontaneous thing.

The 18 year old from Lehi got up to the drum kit and off they went.  Dave and Ronnie would approach the new Killers drummer from time to time to help keep things steady.  They got through the song.  It was an awesome moment.  What a dream come true for that kid!  He did such a great job.  On an unrelated note, I’ll be starting drum lessons on Monday.

Once the selfies, massive applause, and congratulations were over, that very familiar synth chord returned.  I’ve written a lot of words here.  But I don’t know if I can come up with the right words to express how I felt as Brandon Flowers sang, “When there’s nowhere else to run.  Is there room for one more sun?”  Religious? Out of body? Euphoric? Sure.  Those sound about right.  My voice was going, my feet were about to fall off from standing for over three hours straight, I was sweating through my shirt, and yet I felt none of that.  All I felt was the pulsing thunder of thousands of hands clapping and thousands of mouths shouting, “I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier”!!! Over and over and over agian.

I wanted time to stand still.  Just hearing that phrase ring throughout the arena was everything I hoped it would be.  Until that last moment when Flowers holds out “…I’m not a soldiiieeeeeeeeeer”!  The floor and lower and upper bowls exploded in to euphoria.  I’ll never forget the visual of hands and confetti and strangers arm in arm jumping.  What a spectacle!

The Killers left and returned with what Brandon Flowers described as “Something special” for us.  They played a block of songs from their most recent album the Nephi, Utah inspired Pressure Machine . It was really cool.  If I can nit pick anything from this show it would be that I wish this was earlier in the set.  That being said, I loved these songs and it was cool to hear them played here in Utah.

Whenever I felt like, “Ok that’s it.  We’ve seen it all”.  More was to be had.  Following “Spaceman” Brandon Flowers invited the great Johnny Marr on stage to perform with The Killers.  They played a cover of The Smiths’ “Stop Me if You Think You’ve…”.  It must be so surreal performing with one of your idols.

Again, you’d think we’d be out of surprises.  We knew what was coming.  “Mr. Brightside”.  But instead of just playing that song, which would have of course been amazing, they started the song with the Jacques Lu Cont Remix of the song.  People were dancing and a little perplexed.  This is the song we want, but it’s different, but we still love it!  The Killers, still joined by Johnny Marr, played through the first verse, paused, and then Dave Keuning infamous riff rang out.  With whatever energy the crowd still had, which apparently was alot, they went ballistic.

Singing louder than ever and making sure, if I could use a sports phrase, to leave it all there in the arena.  As the band left people were still chanting for one more song.  We were well over two hours in and people wanted more.  That says a lot.  In case you can’t tell, I loved every minute of this show.  Believe it or not, this is me being objective.  The show was really that great.  I was surrounded by really fun strangers who were having an incredible time, and the band was quite simply on point.

People probably slept well after that show.  I myself did not because I was so wired!  It was impossible to stop thinking about it and watching videos I took on my phone.  I have an idea.  Let’s get The Killers back sooner than 2026.  And let’s pack Vivint Arena again.  Or better yet, let’s sell out Rice- Eccles!  Either way, I can’t wait to have these guys back.  This tour is exceptional!

The Killers drop new album about Utah town where singer lived

Brandon Flowers’ childhood in Nephi, Utah, inspired the group’s seventh record.

The Killers are releasing their seventh album, “Pressure Machine.” (Danny Clinch)

Everybody knows about the train.

Feels like it’s always roaring through this small Utah town, locals say.

“You hear it constantly,” a native notes during a recorded interview.

That train represents many things: the industry that’s the beating heart of this place, the Jones Rubber Plant, where all the guys end up; a way of out here; and, for some, a way of out of something else.

“Every two or three years the train kills somebody…” the man continues on the recording, which serves as the intro to the second cut from The Killers’ new album, “Pressure Machine,” which drops Friday. “I think the train is a way to find your way out of this life if you get hit by it.”

And with that, the snippet ends, the synth chimes in, drums thunder, guitars growl and Brandon Flowers elaborates:

“A couple of kids got hit by a Union Pacific train / Carrying sheet metal and household appliances through the pouring rain,” he sings. “They were planning on getting married after graduation / Had a little baby girl / Trouble came and shut it down / Things like that ain’t supposed to happen / In this quiet town.”

This quiet town: Nephi, Utah, population 5,400, nestled in the central part of the state, about a 40-minute drive south of Provo.

Flowers spent a half-dozen of his formative years there, from age 10-16.

“When I first met Brandon, he said he lived in Nephi,” Killers drummer Ronnie Vannucci recalls in a Zoom chat, shirtless, wearing a NASA hat. “And I was like, ‘I know that town. There’s a Taco Time there.’ And he goes, ‘Oh, yeah, I used to work at that Taco Time.’

“It might have been one of our first conversations,” he continues. “It’s interesting to see how the planet of Nephi has continued its orbit within our lives.”

‘Imploding’ expectations

He equates it to staring down the barrel of a gun pointed at him and his band.

“It was a different feeling,” Vannucci begins. He’s talking about getting the creative process going in the mouth of a pandemic.

Last summer, The Killers released their sixth album, the kaleidoscopic “Imploding the Mirage,” with much of the world shut down, basically. And so instead of going on tour, they returned to the studio.

“When we were grounded back towards the end of March, our knee-jerk reaction was, ‘Oh, OK, let’s just pick up the pieces and keep going with the flair of this record,’” Vannucci recalls of carrying on with the invigorated vibe of “Implosion.” “And then things got really, really dark. There’s stay-at-home orders and there were people dying.

“We were sort of realizing what this thing was,” he continues, “and it was more of a beast than we thought. It was spinning us; it was sort of putting us in this mood. It was throwing us into different characters, almost.”

It all begat a burning question: “How are we going to try to make a similar-sounding record when — all of a sudden — the sky’s falling for everyone?” Vannucci wonders.

The answer? Make something totally different instead.

“Brandon said to me one day, ‘This is reminding about being isolated in Nephi,’” Vannucci remembers. “And then he got to thinking about the town he was living in, and decided to jot down these poems, basically, and we built the songs around these poems or lyrics.

“We decided to embark on that sort of journey,” he continues, “that challenge to make a record like this, to make it differently — because everything was different. I think we went about it in the most honest way that we could.”

‘Pressure’ cooker

The album opens with the sheriff kicking the door down.

“They got me for possession of them hillbilly heroin,” Flowers sings on “West Hills,” giving voice to a hard-luck character in a haunting elegy flecked with fiddle and cello that sets a portentous tone for the 10 songs that follow.

Addiction casts a long shadow over “Pressure Machine.”

“There’s a lot of opiods going around,” a Nephi local says in a taped snippet that prefaces the equally searching and stirring “In Another Life.” “It makes you feel pretty damn good. After a few hours, you’ve got to take more. And then after awhile you’re taking a ton and you don’t feel great.”

Rueful laugh.

“Everyone’s just trying to escape somethin,’” he explains.

“Pressure Machine” explores this shift in the American ideal, where small towns were once seen as tight-knit safe havens from big city ills, but are now often wracked by the kind of drug abuse that can consume an entire community.

There’s a duality inherent small town living: some find comfort in a setting where everyone knows everyone else; others find it suffocating, limiting, catalyzing a natural-born restlessness.

“Pressure Machine” is filled with characters rife with a sense of longing, of wanting something more, of feeling mired in these “quicksand streets” or chafing against a “barbed wire town of barbed wire dreams.”

There are two-timing husbands, murderous cops and discontented factory workers in these hills, many of them yearning for a past as a way of steeling themselves against a grim future.

Sonically, these songs largely eschew the bombast of past Killers albums, favoring an earthier, Americana bent that The Killers have touched on previously, but dig into more deeply here with mandolin, pedal steel and harmonica flourishes.

Of course, there are still fist-in-the-air moments to be had — “In the Car Outside” roars like an engine being revved — especially with guitarist Dave Keuning returning to the fold after skipping the “Imploding the Mirage” sessions, earning a couple writing credits and laying down a particularly fiery solo on “Cody.”

For a band with an acknowledged fondness for Bruce Springsteen — and it’s mutual, hence Springsteen’s recent collaboration with The Killers on a version of their “Day & Age” single “Dustland Fairytale” — “Pressure Machine” mines a vein similar to Springsteen’s lo-fi masterpiece “Nebraska,” a stripped-down album of first-person narratives documenting lives of desperation, of blue-collar frustration.

As with Nephi itself, though, there’s beauty amid the bleakness here, with Flowers chronicling young love’s maturation on “Runaway Horses,” a blood-warming acoustic duet with Phoebe Bridgers, while capturing the magic of changing seasons on “Sleepwalker.”

“Don’t you miss the way / Wildflowers paint the western hills?” he sings on the latter.

It’s a rhetorical question, answered in song.

About all those nterview snippets…

The idea came to them when they were mixing the record.

Credit co-producer Shawn Everett. “We were all commenting on how this is just like a documentary, it’s a musical version of a documentary,” Vannucci says of “Pressure Machine.” “It was almost journalistic, telling stories — and they were true stories — and we’re fitting music around them.

“Sean came in the next morning,” he continues, “and goes, ‘I was just listening to NPR, ‘This American Life,’ and somebody put a tape recorder in a diner and just let it roll, and we got to hear all these interesting conversations. You guys should go out to Nephi, you should bring a tape recorder and record people and interview them. I was like, ‘Yeah, that would be awesome.’”

Of course, The Killers being one of the biggest rock bands in the world, it wouldn’t exactly work if they showed up and started chatting up the locals themselves. So they hired a professional to do it.

“One day, they just went out, interviewed people about the town, and we sifted through hours of audio to find these snippets to get to the stories,” Vannucci says. “It wasn’t hard. There was so much gold in the audio captured from that one day in Nephi. You really get a sense of the town through these stories and the accents, the diction and the way people enunciate, even. It helps thread the record together.”

It also another layer of realism to the album.

To hear Vannucci tell it, “Pressure Machine” isn’t just about small-town life. It’s about life, period.

“Even though this is about a small town in Utah, it really can be applied about your town, it can be about where you live or your situation,” he says. “I think more what it’s showcasing is that, small town or big city, you still have your ups and downs.”

Like “Nebraska,” “Pressure Machine” ends with a measure of hard-bitten hope.

“So put another day in, son,” Flowers sings on “The Getting By,” delivering the album’s final line. “And hold on ‘til the getting’s good.”

Then comes the sound of that train.

The Killers are an American post-punk alternative rock band formed in Las Vegas, US, in 2001 by members Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning, who found each other through a newspaper ad.

Since day one The Killers have had a sound, which cannot be confined or compared to those around them. Their rock music is intense yet has a pop-inspired theatricality, which borrows as much from bands like Oasis and The Smiths as it does from artists such as David Bowie.

The band’s first shows in Las Vegas found a loyal audience, but stuck out like a sore thumb from the metal and rap acts flooding the local scene. Keeping to this mentality, The Killers found their initial successes not within their home country of the United States but within the United Kingdom, where the song “Mr. Brightside” premiered on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show and consequently found the band a huge following.

Albums “Hot Fuss”, “Sam's Town”, “Day & Age” and “Battle Born” have all reached number one in the UK charts shortly after their release. In the United States, The Killers’ debut album “Hot Fuss” went triple platinum with the single “Mr. Brightside” hitting number 10 in the US charts.

The band’s musical talent has been recognized with seven Grammy Award nominations, as well as multiple Brit Awards and NME Awards for their various albums and singles such as “Human” and “When We Were Young”. Fans of the band include megastars such as Jay-Z, who described the band’s MO as taking “what's old and mak[ing] it sound new again."

As their popularity continues to grow, The Killers have extended their worldwide tours to include countries such as Russia and China along with spots all over Europe and North America. Along with an ever-growing list of countries to tour, the venues the band plays to are also expanding at an incredible rate. In recent years The Killers have found themselves playing to insane audiences at Madison Square Gardens, US; Wembley Stadium, UK; and The Royal Albert Hall, UK.

Live reviews

If you've never seen The Killers live, you should probably kick yourself. As a long-time fan, but someone who hadn't seen them in concert until their latest studio effort, I still find myself kicking myself for never having gone to see them.

The energy when they're on stage is infectious. They feed off each other and also the crowd, and the crowd feeds off of them - always seeming to leave both sides hungry for more. I guess that's what a great live band does.

For the show at Borgata's new Festival Park venue, the first surprise was the return of the K as part of the keyboard stand. This iconic throwback to the Day and Age era kinda had me hoping this wouldn't be more or less the same Battle Born tour set list that they've been doing for nearly three years. At 20 songs long, it was a full set, with a few surprises, but was largely unchanged from the last time I saw them. Of course, this is a band that has four albums under their belts, and because they don't want to disappoint more casual fans (as in non-Victims), they don't want to leave out any of their hits.

Opening with Mr. Brightside, lights still on, the smile on Brandon Flowers' face was apparent that he has missed his onstage brothers. The smile didn't fade as they drove on into Spaceman, and after introducing the band as well as Ted "Named after the great Ted Williams" Sablay and Jake "The Snake" Blanton, they carried on to The Way It Was. Smile Like You Mean It led into Bling, followed by Human. A return to their first album was introduced by a chills-inducing heavy bass opening as Somebody Told Me reminded everyone why they became as big as they are.

A cover of CCR's Bad Moon Rising led into a surprise of their 2012 album Battle Born as they played the life out of The Rising Tide - a nice surprise. After Shot at the Night, For Reasons Unknown, and From Here On Out, things slowed down for Dustland Fairytale and another surprise, Be Still. Read My Mind and Runaways led into a bittersweet All These Things I've Done. Why bittersweet? When All These Things comes on, fans know it's the last of their main set.

The last surprise of the night came with the first of their encores as they rolled into Uncle Jonny. We know that The Killers (almost) always include their very first album opener: Jenny Was a Friend of Mine - They don't come all the way from Las Vegas and not play Jenny. When You Were Young was the show's closer.

With the news report over, here's the editorial portion of the review.

This band never disappoints - even in the rare instance that they're off their game, they're still on their game. For the show in Atlantic City at Borgata Festival Park they were undoubtedly on their game. Seeing them on stage together, it was as though it was where they wanted to be. The show in AC, before a crowd of 4500, was a warmup for the 70,000 strong crowd at Firefly. Of the 4500 people leaving Festival Park, I don't think one of them was disappointed. I even caught one of the guys working security singing along to a few of their older hits.

While I would have loved to have seen some of the lesser-played songs instead of the set they played, it's only because I've seen them do these songs so often, and had never seen them perform prior to 2012 (huge mistake on my part). The Killers want people to leave their shows with a sense of satisfaction, so, playing their most popular songs is a given. Still, I would just love to hear Sam's Town at least one more time, and quite honestly, I wish they'd drop the cover song they do (for the last 6 shows I've seen, they have always done Bad Moon Rising). With an arsenal of 4 full albums, they certainly have enough original material to play a full set without tossing in a cover version. (At least it's not Shadowplay!)

Nothing would ever be able to stop me from making the effort to see this band perform. The 22 hour round-trip to the Jersey Shore was well worth it; they never disappoint. Ever. If I could, I'd be at a Killers show every night for the rest of my life.

Yes, a Killers show is one of my personal Sam's Towns - if you don't know what that means, do yourself a favor, and while waiting for their next tour, check out their live DVD - Live From the Royal Albert Hall. You'll see why Victims, myself included, will travel all kinds of distances to see these guys perform.

The Killers played the first night of Lollapalooza last year, and they made it a night I'll never forget. From the stage lighting to visual effects on the screens, The Killers put on a show that captivated the thousands of people that came out to watch them. The band erupted with "Mr. Brightside," which sent the audience into a state of excitement. Everyone started dancing/jumping/singing to the music. There was a lot of jostling around, and I kept getting pushed forward by people from behind trying to get closer to the stage. I remember while I was belting out the lyrics to "Human," someone grabbed my arm and started dancing with me. The audience was so friendly, and looking around, many people had huge smiles on their faces that shone against the colorful stage lights. The Killers have been around for quite some time, and anyone can see that they are clearly at ease playing in front of thousands of people. The lead singer, Brandon Flowers, sang even better live compared to the audio recordings. He didn't even take a water break or anything; he just kept going and going, and throughout the entire performance, his energy stayed sky high (his collared shirt was unbuttoned and drenched with sweat by the end if the night). He introduced the rest of the band and was very interactive with the crowd, reaching out to touch outstretched hands. The concert had a fun, friendly vibe to it, and I was surrounded by people who were all so happy to be there. That concert was the first time I experienced a night show outdoors, let alone in the heart of downtown Chicago. Looking up around me, the skyscrapers we're lit up and the stage lights bounced off of them. It was such a beautiful sight. Jamming out to awesome music under the city lights was the perfect way to end my first night at Lolla.

This was, so far, the best concert for The Killers that I've ever seen (& I've seen them 3 times already). The acoustics for the Staples Center wasn't the absolute best, but it didn't matter when the whole stadium was singing at the top of their lungs along with the band. First of all, since this was the Wonderful Wonderful Tour, I thought the band would play mostly songs from the new album, but to my surprise, they performed a great mix of songs from their entire discography. What surprised me the most was that The Killers played a ton more songs from their Hot Fuss album than they ever had before. They even dug deep to perform such notable songs like "Andy, You're A Star" & "Smile Like You Mean It". A beautifully sweet touch was when the band performed a new, sort of spur-of-the-moment, song about Los Angeles...a song they had written on the road just before their L.A. leg of the tour. One of the major highlights of the entire concert was when the band had invited a young teenage fan up onto the stage to play the drums on the song "For Reasons Unknown". Apparently this has become an ongoing tradition of the band, to invite fans up on the stage to perform with them. This was such a touching, yet totally bad-ass moment, & I hope The Killers keep on doing this at every concert tour from now on. By the end of the concert, my friends & I had lost our voices from singing & screaming so loudly, but it was one thousand percent worth it. The Killers proved with their electrifying & humorous stage presence, along with their amazing voices & talent, that they will forever hold the spot of being my all-time favorite band.

The killers in vancouver, how can i even but this into words that people will comprehend? For me, the killers are my favorite band and Brandon Flowers is a HUGE inspiration in my life. His style of writing impacts me in a huge way. Also, for me, the killers music helped me a lot with personal problems that had hit me pretty hard in my life. I listen to their music when i'm happy, sad, healthy or sick, and for me, seeing this concert was in a way, life saving. And being such a huge fan, i had high hopes for this show and they did not at all disapoint. I went to this show with one of my closest friends, who is also a huge killers fan. The show began with 'Wonderful Wonderful' (as you may have assumed) and soon after they jumped right into 'The Man'. The setlist was incredible. I honestly couldn't say that i was disappointed with any of the songs they chose to play. I wish they would have done 'Bones' or 'Under the Gun' but i had low hopes when it came to those two. The stage presents was incredible. I couldn't take my eyes off of Brandon. He is just one of those people who can really own a stage and engage a crowd. And coming from an aspiring guitarist, i would normally be watching the guitarist almost out of habit; but with the exception of guitar solos, I was watching Brandon. This is a show I would heavily recommend going to. For me, it was the greatest experience of my life. The only negative of the show is figuring out how you're going to top it.

I hadn't listened to the Killers in several years and was invited by a friend to go see them in concert. I'd forgotten how good they were! Their show was full of energy and the evening was nothing short of spectacular. It seemed like every inch of the stage was covered with lights, and the show was filled with special effects some including fireworks. A Killers concert is like a massive stadium type of show, full of power and special effects.

The band played all their hit songs and even included some cover songs that really were done well. One of the really good covers they played was the Smiths “There is a Light that Never goes out”. The crowd was very energized and the show started out at full force when they opened with one of their better know songs “When You were Young”. The band finished with several encores including some of their first hits, I guess the show ended up lasting about 90-95 minutes.

The venue was large but it was pretty full. The crowd did get a little out of control at some points during the show, but the stadium was large enough that they had good security and you could just move away from people who were getting carried away. The band is getting older but they sounded great. It is good to see them back in rock and roll form.

The Killers delivered a high energy polished show. Brandon was in great voice, drummer was fantastic. A great rock show for sure.

The venue, however... just atrocious. Place Bell in Laval is a new arena for 10K attendance, but it has massive logistical & design failures. 1) crowds waited 25-60 minutes to enter the building ... outside in -35C! ... due to an inadequate entry plan. Thousands of concertgoers were invited to show up between 7-8 pm, to be greeted by 4 open doors and 6 security stations. 2) parking congestion nightmares & traffic woes before and after the show 3) electricity on stage went out 3 times during the show 4) other concert-goers reported no drinking fountains, toilet paper, limited mobility access...

SUMMARY: Go See the Killers, not at Place Bell in Laval.

The Killers, as always, were amazing beyond mere words. I've seen them in concert before, but somehow this particular concert at Outside Lands 2014 was especially memorable. From singing Credence Clearwater Revival & Otis Redding covers, to performing all their greatest hits (and then some). I was completely pumped up from beginning to end. As per their usual Las Vegas-ian flare, the light show almost stole the spotlight from Brandon Flowers & his famous lightning bolt keyboard, but no one can captivate & amp up an audience like Mr B Flowers. I think I might have been one of the loudest singers in my section of the crowd. Singing along to all the "Direct Hits" is always the best part of the concert!

It was my first time seeing The Killers after a number of years waiting to see them play live. I have never had an experience quite like this one. They are a truly special band to see play live, the energy of the crowd is infectious, and you are left wanting more. Brandon Flowers, man, I don't know how he does it. Plays show after show after show and still sounds incredible. The additions to the band were awesome and Ronnie is a beast (in the best way.) My favorite thing about their show was actually the stage design. It was so beautiful and colorful and set the tone perfectly for each song. You will have a BLAST at their show, whether you're a hardcore fan or not. Can't wait to see them again! :-)

I actually saw the show at Barclays on Tuesday the 8th. Let me start by saying I see a lot of concerts every year and was only familiar with the better known of The Killers songs. Having said that - they were EXCELLENT! Flowers is a magnificent front man with a set of pipes to carry stadiums. The band is flawless and so rock and roll. I will judge a band by how much they can hook me with a song I’ve never heard before . From the opening with Wonderful Wonderful and The Man thru The Calling start to the encore I was dazzled. I downloaded everything and I’m now a confirmed fan. I will see them again ASAP. One of the best live I have seen -ever. And I’m no spring chicken.

It was amazing!!! From the moment they went on stage to the very last second it was just so much positive energy coming from the band. The crowd was bad, but that isn’t The Killers’ fault! They did the absolute most and it paid off. Brandon hit those high notes despite his flu, Ronnie was legendary on the drums, Ted was amazing, the choir was amazing, et cetera et cetera. It’s a shame (especially for the people that DID know all their songs) that the crowd bothered them so much that they didn’t play Mr. Brightside, but again, the band isn’t to blame.

These Las Vegas legends know how to give a great performance!

killers new album brandon flowers nephi utah pressure

The Killers have a new release coming Aug. 13, “Pressure Machine,” a concept album themed largely around frontman Brandon Flowers ‘ hometown of Nephi, Utah.

Monday’s announcement of the new project was accompanied by a short video trailer that includes shots of the small town, and local citizens offering different takes on what it’s like to live in a fairly cloistered community, from a man offering the wary “If you don’t have the right name, the right whatever… there are people in town that love me and people in town that hate me” to a young woman exulting that it’s “a small community where everybody knows everybody, nice kids — we’ll be here forever.”

Flowers described the album in a statement as having come out of a COVID-dominated time when “everything came to this grinding halt. And it was the first time in a long time for me that I was faced with silence.  And out of that silence this record began to bloom, full of songs that would have otherwise been too quiet and drowned out by the noise of typical Killers records.”

The band’s seventh album follows a not particularly long gap between Killers albums. Their last one, “Imploding the Mirage,” came out last year and was co-produced, as the new one is, by the group, Shawn Everett and Jonathan Rado of Foxygen.

Popular on Variety

A release described “Pressure Machine” as “a view into the everyday realities of a small American town with a stark, tough beauty, and the Killers’ most restrained and resonant album yet.”

Flowers, who lived in Nephi from when he was 10 till 16, said the commentary from locals heard in the trailer will carry over to between the tracks on the album itself. “I discovered this grief that I hadn’t dealt with,” he said. “Many memories of my time in Nephi are tender.  But the ones tied to fear or great sadness were emotionally charged.  I’ve got more understanding now than when we started the band, and hopefully I was able to do justice to these stories and these lives in this little town that I grew up in.”

The packaging also includes artwork of Nephi, including a cover shot of a Baptist church’s display taken by photographer Wes Johnson.

The group will be promoting both “Pressure Machine” and “Imploding The Mirage” on a tour next year. It goes on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. local time via the Killers’ website.

The Killers Frontman Brandon Flowers’ Home Is a Desertscape Retreat in the Snowy Slopes of Park City, Utah

By Sydney Gore

Brandon Flowers has been narrating American tales to the soundtrack of rock and roll as the frontman of The Killers since 2002. Over the decades, the Las Vegas band has often glamorized the pursuit of a dream that is bigger than the quintessential small hometown, setting the scene for a lifetime of anthems rooted in the crossfire of faith and freedom. So for those familiar with his catalogue, which includes seven full-length albums and two solo records, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Flowers’ home in Park City, Utah, is an extension of this idealistic vision. With its all-black exterior and Western-themed interiors, it’s not so much an escape as a refuge that is the appropriate amount of over-the-top.

The home was designed by architect Cristof Eigelberger , whom Flowers first hired in 2015 to work on his Las Vegas residence. After settling on this particular house, which is about an hour from the musician’s childhood home in Nephi, Utah, Eigelberger spent approximately a year and a half changing the exterior façade and fully gutting the drywall interior. The five-bedroom home includes a media room, ski room, and a four-car garage—among (many) other attributes.

“What’s amazing about the house itself is that it is a direct ski-in, so you’re able to go out onto the terrace, watch people ski by, and play in the yard for sledding or hiking in the summer,” Eigelberger says. “In the winter time you can literally ski in and come right down.”

Eigelberger’s firm specializes in zeroing in on a bigger picture. To determine the legacy of any home, and how its architecture will live on after its owner has moved out, his team surveys the vernacular of the area in which the residence is being built. Since Flowers is hypersensitive to color, the sample process had to be very precise in order to make sure that everything vibed. “He wanted something that was very moody and worked with his artwork,” Eigelberger says.

The goal was to figure out how to tone everything down without turning the space into a bright box. Because the Flowers family appreciates the “vibrant craziness of all the textures,” Eigelberger was able to really push the envelope in terms of the selections for the wallpapers which feature minimal designs.

Opting for natural barn wood materials evoked a more neutral palate, which in turn provided rhythmic symmetry and opened up the space. The concept was to start with three items that would tie the entire house together and then layer on top of those textures and fabrics. (Think reclaimed wood, flooring elements, and more wallpaper.) All of the cabinetry in the kitchen was refaced with a white oak, while the countertops were redone with Ann Sacks tiles. “[Brandon] wanted to get the sensitivity and stability of the desert, but still be within the mountains,” Eigelberger says. “And then he had this concept of having a little bit of a Liberace vibe to it as we went up the stairs.”

The second level of the house features a grand piano on an extravagant vintage carpet that Brandon finessed from the casino of Caesars Palace , along with a gold leafed ceiling that cuts into a mirror. “That was really fun because it’s sort of that unexpected moment throughout the architecture that we were able to capture,” Eigelberger says. He recalls how it was fairly challenging to figure out how to make such a loud pattern work in a small space amidst the other combination of materials, but there’s a harmonious vibrancy that comes through for a tastefully regal ambiance. Beyond the promise of a good time, it’s a palatable energy that suggests good fortune and luxury.

“Brandon understands and appreciates spaces of different scales,” Eigelberger says. “The compression of space is so important to architecture and to get a client to understand that is a big hurdle. Having those small spaces really becomes sometimes the most wonderful part of the entire home.”

The other focus was on what pieces would feel truly authentic. “Finding those little things that create those memories and are able to continue with the family have always been very important,” Eigelberger says. “It’s something that has a meaning to them, but then the rest of it is all about spending time with family and being able to enjoy it.”

Most of the furniture in the home came from the Flowers’ previous residence, but the Sloan dining table and Ralph Pucci chairs were new additions. Eigelberger describes the Las Vegas house as Mediterranean in style and “extremely lush,” whereas this property is channeling more of a desert landscape vibe. (However, it’s hard to ignore the Starlite Motel –inspired sign in the dining room that reads “Flowers.”) Eigelberger notes that Flowers is a history buff, but he and his wife, Tana Mundkowsky, don’t gravitate toward contemporary architecture. The singer has an eye for minimalistic details, and he is most influenced by the natural elements that surround him.

The most unexpected twist is probably the knitting room that was custom created for Mundkowsky. It’s an animated area with a graphic wallpaper, which is complemented by the brightness of the yarn ball-filled shelves. Another important detail is the bathrooms that Flowers ensured were all acoustically perfect. The orange concrete tiles in the shower of the primary bathroom are also a reference to Zion Canyon and The Painted Desert. As Eigelberger explains, “[Artists] are always thinking about design and how it plays into how they do their music and compose. They’re very affected by the environment in which they’re living.”

“We were constantly trying to think about how these transitions would occur from room to room and then punch it up to the next level,” the designer concludes. “Brandon and Tana really wanted this to be a holistic approach to the entire project.”

Event Details

The killers will be heading back to the road to celebrate both pressure machine and imploding the mirage , along with their much-loved catalog of global hits, in 2022. .

Tickets go on sale on Friday, July 23rd, at 10 am local time via the band’s website or on Ticketmaster.com .

The Killers will release their seventh studio album, entitled Pressure Machine , on Island Records on August 13, 2021 .  The album was co-produced by the band, Shawn Everett , and Jonathan Rado (of Foxygen), all of whom worked together on The Killers’ critically-acclaimed album Imploding The Mirage , released last year.

When the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the promotional run and worldwide tour for The Killers’ majestic, critically-acclaimed 2020 album Imploding the Mirage , “everything came to this grinding halt,” says frontman Brandon Flowers . Enter Pressure Machine : a view into the everyday realities of a small American town with a stark, tough beauty, and The Killers’ most restrained and resonant album yet.

A video from Brandon about Pressure Machine can be seen now via Apple Music.  Click HERE to watch it.

A quieter, character-study-driven album, Pressure Machine lives squarely in Flowers’ hometown of Nephi, Utah, a close-knit community of 5300 people with no traffic lights, a rubber plant, wheat fields, and the West Hills.  Nephi is the place Flowers spent his formative years (10-16), saying “ had it not been for advancements in the automotive industry, Nephi in the 90s could have been the 1950s .”  The album’s songs are based on the memories and stories of people that impacted him growing up, interspersed with commentary from current Nephi locals about their town.  “ We were discussing [Brandon] moving to Nephi as a kid and being stuck in the middle of nowhere,” says the band’s drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr .

The Killers Announce Character-Driven ‘Pressure Machine’ Album, 2022 Tour Dates

"Write what you know" is a common axiom among songwriters and it's an idea that singer Brandon Flowers took to heart with a character-driven new Killers album entitled Pressure Machine that is now set to arrive on Aug. 13.

The band's newly-announced seventh studio album follows closely on the heels of their 2020 release Imploding the Mirage and was born out of the pandemic-induced downtime of the past year with Flowers looking to his past for inspiration.

The album was co-produced by the band, Shawn Everett, and Jonathan Rado (of Foxygen), all of whom worked together on The Killers’ critically-acclaimed album Imploding The Mirage .

“Everything came to this grinding halt, and it was the first time in a long time for me that I was faced with silence," says Flowers. "And out of that silence this record began to bloom, full of songs that would have otherwise been too quiet and drowned out by the noise of typical Killers records.”

Having time away from the concert and album cycle, Flowers started to reflect on the idea of the small American town, with his own home base of Nephi, Utah from his youth helping to color some of the material. “Had it not been for advancements in the automotive industry, Nephi in the 90s could have been the 1950s,” says Flowers.

“We were discussing [Brandon] moving to Nephi as a kid and being stuck in the middle of nowhere,” says drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. “And during Covid-19, it started to feel like we were all in the middle of nowhere.”

Flowers adds, “I discovered this grief that I hadn’t dealt with, many memories of my time in Nephi are tender. But the ones tied to fear or great sadness were emotionally charged. I’ve got more understanding now than when we started the band, and hopefully I was able to do justice to these stories and these lives in this little town that I grew up in.” The singer discusses more about the idea for the album in this trailer for Apple Music .

Digging into his past centric to a small town in the U.S. southwest, the vocalist wrote all the lyrics for the songs before a note was even recorded for the album. Pressure Machine is told not only from his perspective but also some characters of the lives he watched in his hometown as a teenager.

Helping to put listeners in the right frame of mind, Pressure Machine 's album art also features a highway shot just outside of Nephi taken by photographer Wes Johnson, with additional photos featured within the album packaging. Due Aug. 13, Pressure Machine is now available to pre-order here .

And with The Killers not only having one previous album to support as the pandemic delayed touring for their last record but now also now having the follow-up ready, they'll return to the road in 2022 with two full albums to promote. Tour dates and stops are listed below with tickets going on sale this Friday (July 23) at 10AM local time via the band's website .

The Killers are gearing up to drop their seventh album Pressure Machine on Friday (August 13), and ahead of its release Brandon Flowers detailed how Nephi, Utah (where he lived in between the ages of 10 to 16) inspired the project and turned it into a concept album.

He explained to Rolling Stone how his mind kept drifting back to that small town during the early days of the pandemic. “There was a nostalgic longing in the air and a little bit of sadness,” the singer recalled. “I started thinking about where I was in the Nineties, and these stories just sort of blossomed out.”

The 11-track record tells real life stories from townspeople that range from prescription drug abuse and poverty to crime, homophobia, and depression.

“When I was writing these songs, I was thinking of things like Sherwood Anderson’s book Winesburg, Ohio or that book Pastures of Heaven [by John Steinbeck],” Flowers said, “where’s it’s all these short stories that take place in this one setting. For some reason, I had the audacity to try it myself. Once I realized they were going to take place here and they were going to be true stories, everything just really fell in our laps.”

The Killers plan to tour in support of Pressure Machine and last year's Imploding the Mirage in 2022. See a full list of tour dates here .

‘Coolest venue on Earth’: Experience the Boots & Bikinis Country Fest at Cedar Beach Oasis this summer

the killers tour utah

CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — Bring your RVs, tents and sense of adventure to enjoy a fun-filled, music-fueled weekend as the Boots & Bikinis Country Fest returns to Cedar Beach Oasis this summer. Along with nonstop live music, there’s something for everyone, including gourmet food trucks, team competitions, water activities and family-friendly camping.

the killers tour utah

“We’ve created our own version of Stagecoach right here in Southern Utah,” Boots & Bikinis CEO Austin Christensen said. “It’s cool because it’s at a price point that’s affordable for everyone.”

Cedar Beach Oasis, located just 5 miles west of Cedar City near the Three Peaks Recreation Area, is a unique site that features a swimming pond with a sandy shoreline and peaceful campgrounds beneath the shade of cedar trees. And for Christensen, it’s the perfect place to organize a multi-day, multi-artist, multi-activity festival unlike anything else in Southern Utah.

“We’ve got the coolest venue on Earth,” he said. “What other country music festival do you have water at?”

It all starts Friday at noon as DJ Suspence kicks off the weekend right. Hit the beach, enjoy a float across the pond or try the giant waterslide, rope swing, high dive, zip line and other exhilarating water activities while he spins today’s biggest hits on the Oasis Stage.

The Oasis Stage might be where the party’s at, but Boots & Bikinis is featuring talented artists throughout the venue all day long. Kick back and unwind with smooth hits from Carver Louis on the Flatbed Stage, or get your boots scooting to the lively beats of Daniel Beddoes on the Camp Stage.

As the sun goes down, it’s time to get your line-dancing boots on with Utah’s own Cody Robbins on the Main Stage. Robbins, a “lover, fighter, sinner, songwriter,” performs across Utah as a solo artist and with his cover band, the Coldhearted Renegades.

Taking the Oasis Stage next, Lil’Skinny will get everybody on their feet with his dynamic blend of country and Southern rock. A native of Arkansas, Lil’Skinny now lives in Nashville, where he’s been lighting up the local honky-tonk scene with his electric stage presence and outlaw swagger.

Platinum-selling Canadian singer and songwriter Tenille Arts will close out the night on the Main Stage. After making history with “Somebody Like That,” country’s first-ever No. 1 single written, produced and performed entirely by women, Arts toured internationally with Lady A, Scotty McCreery and Luke Combs.

DJ Suspence will return to the Oasis Stage at noon on Saturday to get the party going before Whitney Lusk tears it up and throws down some boot-stomping hits. Another of Utah’s homegrown stars, Lusk is making waves in Nashville and has opened for some of the industry’s biggest names, including Josh Turner, Maddie & Tae and Russell Dickerson.

Next on the Main Stage will be Kenny Feidler, a former rodeo man who combines dark cowboy songs and stories of the West with gritty rock ‘n’ roll. Hailing from the badlands of South Dakota, he tours nationwide with his band, The Cowboy Killers, and has accumulated over 140 million streams worldwide.

Last, but certainly not least, is Dillon Carmichael, who has been acclaimed by “Rolling Stone” as “country music’s most convincing young star” since Chris Stapleton. Born and raised in Kentucky, this soulful troubadour will send this year’s festival off in style with his booming baritone vocals and hard-edged mix of Southern rock with outlaw country.

Tickets are on sale now at bootsandbikinis.com . If you want the full experience, two-day festival passes cost $99 per person. Short on time? Buy a one-day pass for either Friday or Saturday for $69 per person.

Boots & Bikinis also offers discounted single-day ($34.50) and all-access ($49.50) passes for kids ages 8-13. Kids age 7 and younger enter for free.

the killers tour utah

RV camping ($69) and tent camping ($39) passes are also available for the duration of the event. Or get closer to the action with a VIP RV camping pass for $99, which includes premium parking near additional shaded areas, event stages and the vendor village.

“We have several couples that came last year and met new friends while camping,” Christensen said. “They bought tickets and camping passes again this year so they could re-connect. They want to make it an annual thing, and that’s what this is all about.”

VIP RV camping is almost sold out, so don’t wait to reserve your space. There are no RV hookups at Cedar Beach Oasis.

Boots & Bikinis has invited dance groups from across the West to teach line dancing and swing dancing each day. The festival will also feature local musicians on the Camp Stage all weekend long, so there’s always live entertainment going on somewhere at the venue.

Additionally, Boots & Bikinis challenges festivalgoers to join one of the individual or team tournaments, which include cornhole, dummy roping, sand volleyball, line dancing, mechanical bull riding and pit bike racing. Don’t miss your chance to win cash, prizes or even a custom belt buckle.

“The amazing music we offer is almost secondary to the entire experience,” Christensen said. “This is a festival you can participate in all day every day, as much or as little as you want.”

  30. Sergeant Bill Hooser, Santaquin Police Department, Utah

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper and Sergeant Hooser initiated a traffic stop at 6:30 a.m. after reports of a person standing on the back of a semi-trailer. The driver fled and turned his tractor-trailer around, driving south on the northbound lanes, when he hit Sergeant Hooser, his patrol car, and the trooper's vehicle.
