A Trump-Rubio 2024 ticket? Kamala Harris tours Florida school shooting site

Walt disney world and the panel that governs it settled a lawsuit this week, ending two years of acrimony that made headlines beyond neverland. but read why the legal dispute isn't exactly over..

Hi, I am  Antonio Fins, a politics editor with the USA Today Florida Network , and this is our recap of the week that was in Sunshine State politics.

The week began with Vice President Kamala Harris touring the site of a Parkland high school mass shooting, then became surreal with Donald Trump's joint venture to sell Bibles and sort of concluded with a cliff-hanger as Floridians wait for the state Supreme Court to issue rulings on proposed constitutional amendments to protect abortion rights and legalize recreational marijuana use.

Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo! One legal dispute from DeSantis' woke war on Disney settled.

Walt Disney World and the panel that governs it, hand-picked by Gov. Ron DeSantis, settled a lawsuit this week, ending two years of acrimony that made headlines beyond the second star to the right and all the way to Neverland. But read why the legal dispute isn't exactly over .

The governor did a fair amount of bill signing this week, including a law permitting teenagers to work more hours and another allowing the sale of those giant bottles of wine . Bottoms up, Nebuchadnezzars !

The big one was his signature on that social media measure restricting access to minors and to porn sites , though it is expected to face legal challenges. A good part of the law may be open to interpretation and deciphering , read why here .

A lesser-known bill that also will become law is intended to allow land owners more leeway in evicting "squatters," unauthorized people on their property.

Also in Tallahassee, charges were filed against two people who sprayed "Save Gaza" graffiti on the grounds of the Old State Capitol building , where protesters often gather for a variety of rallies and demonstrations.

We told you a couple of weeks ago about the controversy over Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo and vaccinations, and this county has now also reported measles cases .

Trump-Rubio 2024? Why U.S. Constitution may require one of them to 'leave' Florida.

Florida's senior senator, Marco Rubio, has apparently landed on Trump's seemingly long list of vice presidential nominees. But read why the U.S Constitution's 12th amendment may require either Rubio or Trump to "leave" Florida if they are both on the ticket.

Trump's big tent brand of politics is really a welcome mat for the MAGA faithful. But there is no room at the inn for Congresswoman Laurel Lee, as Trump has issued a call for a MAGA candidate to primary the incumbent Republican this year.

Trump also sent out a MAGA signal to Sarasota-area state Sen. Joe Gruters, clearing the way for him to run for the chief financial officer Cabinet post .

A New York appeals panel lowered Trump's required bond to $175 million, although it seemed unlikely the Empire State's attorney general would go after his Florida properties such as his West Palm Beach golf club or his Doral resort and spa in Miami-Dade County.

'Confused' Joe Biden trolls Trump on fundraising, ridicules him on Ronald Reagan axiom

Trump got trolled by President Joe Biden's campaign on the presumptive Republican nominee's apparently lackluster fundraising haul in February .

Team Biden also ridiculed Trump, who posted the Ronald Reagan line asking if people felt they are better off today than four years ago, by reminding everyone that in spring 2020 Trump was advising people to chug disinfectants amid the pandemic business shutdown.

Trump also got mocked when he posted last Sunday on his social media site that he was at his Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach "tonight, AWARDS NIGHT, to receive THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY & THE SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY."

But former first daughter Chelsea Clinton came to the defense of Trump's youngest son , Barron, who turned 18 earlier this month, saying the public should leave him alone.

That's it for this week. If you want more to read, here are an additional five stories from the USA Today Florida Network's politics reporters.

Asbury Sales Student Wins Global Competition

April 10, 2024

the knox school virtual tour

The Dayton School of Business (DSB) Asbury Sales Team competed in multiple events this spring, with students securing first-time wins in challenging new products and sales situations.

Lauren Harris ’25 and Julianne Knox ’27 participated in the  National Shores Sales Challenge  in Salisbury, Md. At the competition, the students competed to sell a Perdue Farms frozen chicken product to grocery retailers.

Both Harris and Knox placed second in the first round, placing them in the Top 20 (of 76) for that round and allowed them to move directly to the semifinals. The competition fostered perseverance in dealing with a variety of customers and featured a mingling event with the students and Jim Perdue at his family home on the Maryland shore.

Yuri Tirado ’24 and Franco Patino ’26 excelled in the virtual round of the  Global Bilingual Sales Competition in February, winning second place for their team and receiving an invitation to the semifinals in Miami. This competition had the double challenge of a complex product (HubSpot software) along with the challenge of selling in both English and Spanish.

“When it comes to sales or meetings, it is very important to find the perfect balance to combine all the knowledge acquired; sometimes we have to trust our instincts and ourselves more than the information,” said Tirado. “Once graduated, I’ll begin my accounting position at EY, enjoying the challenges and opportunities that life gives us to learn from them.”

Patino won the Spanish competition, receiving coaching from one of the Sales Team’s former competitors, Juan Vidal ’23 , who prepared the students in Miami. The performance earned Asbury a third-place finish overall.

“Having my mom travel from Argentina to Miami to see me and spend quality time with me was already a massive win,” said Patino. “Moreover, getting first place while embodying all the hard work done by Dr. George Allen and Juan Vidal was phenomenal. Overall, I’m grateful for the opportunities that the DSB facilitates for its students and for my astounding and loving family. Without them, nothing would be possible.”

“I am very proud of these four competitors who represented the Lord and Asbury well as they worked hard to prepare over the last several months and then competed well at their events,” said Dr. George Allen, Asbury’s Center for Professional Selling director. “Please join me in congratulating Lauren, Julianne, Franco, Yuri, and their coach Juan for their great performance.”

The DSB recently announced the Certificate in Professional Sales, an 18-credit program providing formal recognition of significant training in professional sales available to Asbury undergraduate Business students. Learn more.

The DSB offers five majors (Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Marketing, and Sport Management), five minors (Accounting, Business, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, and Sport Management), the MBA program, the M.S. in Accounting program, and the Online Business Management program. Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Never Static, Always Dynamic

As an institution that is mission driven and intentional in its structure and purpose, The Knox School created its academic program to provide capable students with opportunities to excel within a liberal arts program that is infused with artistic and athletic pursuits. Knox students enjoy experiences of discovery and learning that will prepare them for life in college and beyond. Our team of administrators and educators are driven by a collective vision and desire to inspire in each student a lifelong love of learning, and to nurture and celebrate each individual’s strengths and talents.

While we do not teach or test to the Common Core or Regents examinations, our standards and expectations of our students align with or exceed the rigor of state and national education standards. We offer a wide variety of AP courses, electives that are relevant to the needs and interests of our student body, and a lively performing arts program, along with stimulating visual arts offerings. Academic support is also available through our ENL and BOOST programs, and leadership opportunities are always available for the taking in our classrooms, in our studios, and on our playing courts and fields.

We are proud of the fact that the academic program at Knox is never static, but a dynamic entity of our School upon which we are always building.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!

Principal’s welcome

Nikki kirkup, at the knox school, we understand that choosing the right learning environment for your children is one of the most significant decisions you will make as a parent, not only financially, but also emotionally..

the knox school virtual tour

At TKS, we view education as a holistic journey and a partnership. In taking this first step in considering TKS, you are taking the first steps in this important journey and forming the basis of the partnership which will continue and evolve throughout your child’s years at TKS and life beyond.

With a dedicated Personalised Learning strategy, at TKS, we help each student achieve their best, building on their strengths through intentional frameworks of learning and support across individual learning journeys designed to ensure the holistic growth of every student. We have a commitment to small class sizes to provide greater engagement between teachers and their students. Our classroom sizes allow the building of strong relationships where students are known, understood and celebrated as unique individuals.

At TKS, your child will be known, will have a voice and be valued.

As a non-denominational learning community, our strong values underpin everything we do – Values of Achievement, Responsibility, Respect, Resilience, Care and Empathy. These values are embodied by our students who are proud to belong; upon graduation they will join the ranks of our alumni (The Falconians) who are changing the world in many wonderful ways. To make a difference for not only their own lives, but in those of others too.

Learning is an adventure that, as humans, we all engage in; it is a common but complex process. At The Knox School, we consider learning to be not just a singular undertaking, but rather a journey on three levels.

The first journey is one with which we are all familiar; the knowledge journey. The transfer of knowledge and information is important, and it is easy to see every day in any given classroom. This knowledge is valuable, in fact it is essential. However, if we look a little closer, we will see that this is just the surface of activity in a TKS classroom.

And what happens next is part of what makes us unique.

The second journey is a little more complicated to see, but in many ways, below the surface level activities, this is where the real learning takes place. It is here we focus on the development of skills: communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. The skills required for life of meaning and purpose. This learning is complex and can be challenging. Indeed, these skills are not developed in a singular lesson or classroom, but over time. As such, this development requires carefully planned sequences of learning experiences, which allow our students to wrestle with challenges and apply their skill set in different circumstances and complexities. Over time, we see them actively grow, not only in a specific subject or discipline, but in their overall capacity as learners.

The third journey is without doubt, the most complex, yet perhaps the most rewarding of all. This is where we find the gradual development of attributes and dispositions that influence the overall learning itself; at TKS, we focus on character and contribution. These fundamental attributes and dispositions determine how our students respond to difficulty, uncertainty, and complexity, in the world around them.

Through an intentional focus on the development of character and contribution, our students are well positioned to advocate for themselves as learners, contribute to their own learning and that of others and thrive in the complex world around them. To ‘ACT out their lives.’ These are not just skills for the classroom, for today or even tomorrow. This is deep learning. Learning with real world meaning. Learning for life.

At TKS, we understand the responsibility we have in planning for and supporting our students through these three journeys. It is a creative and complex framework that is required to strike the correct balance for each of our students; to ensure the personalised learning experience.

The Knox School is a school beautifully positioned to grow and promote the learning and wellbeing of each student, so they can thrive and contribute in a complex and changing world; to become the architects and advocates of their future. It is my privilege to lead the TKS community and I look forward to meeting you on campus when you visit our vibrant learning community.
