Fans adore the show's hilarious cast as they travel beyond their comfort zones to explore random holiday destinations around the world.

Now, Travel Guides is back for its latest season and will  return to Channel 9 on Wednesday, April 19 at 7:30pm .

While fans are very keen to see the friendly faces on our screens once more, there have been some changes to the traditional  Travel Guides cast.

Cowgirl Mel - who appears on the show with her identical twin sister, Stack - is taking some time off from this season to be with her one-year-old daughter, Savannah.

However, Stack's new partner remains in the family, with brother Josh joining the team in Mel's place.

With that in mind, meet the Travel Guides cast for 2023...

Meet Josh! He'll join sister Stack in place of Mel this season.

Stack and Josh

There will be a switch-up to the traditional pairing of identical twins and country cowgirls, Stack and Mel. This year, you'll see Stack and Josh. While not an identical twin, Josh is the sisters' younger brother.

As was the case with his older siblings, Josh is a little wary about travelling beyond the family's home in outback Queensland. In fact, he's never been out of Australia (until now).

While Stack and Mel were more comfortable at a local rodeo, they felt like fish out of water on their Travel Guides adventures. And Josh will be just the same!

Will he be as game as his sisters? We're sure this construction worker will do just fine.

matt-brett-travel-guides

Matt and Brett

Bona fide travel addicts Matt and Brett joined the show in season four, hailing from Newcastle in New South Wales.

The married couple, who have been together for 19 years now, describe themselves as ‘high end travellers’ who also love a bargain.

While Matt is organised, and packs his outfits into plastic bags via the suitcase, Brett is much happier going along for the ride, leading to a delightful Bert-and-Ernie energy that makes for great TV.

They’re also hilarious, giving biting commentary, and always making the audience laugh.

The Fren Family

The Fren family

The delightful Fren family have been regulars since season one, bringing immediate joy to the show with their upbeat nature.

Dad Mark is upbeat and forthright, with a knack for negotiating room upgrades. He’s been married to wife Cathy for over 30 years, and their two kids, Victoria and Jonathan, are always along for the journey.

Their family grew earlier this year, with Jonathan marrying his long-term partner, Danielle Clarke .

Other members of the Travel Guides cast Matt, Brett, Kevin, Janetta, Mel, and Stack were all in attendance – too cute!

kevin-janetta-travel-guides

Kevin and Janetta

‘Holiday snobs’ Kevin and Janetta always bring the laughs.

The pair, who are in their 60s, are passionate wine enthusiasts and seasoned travellers. They’re also avid researchers when it comes to their holidays, making sure they have the best possible experience, so being thrown into strange situations on the show always makes for a good laugh.

They also won’t hesitate to ask for the manager, which has earned them the catchphrase “we don’t suffer in silence”.

kev-dorian-teng-travel-guides

Kev, Dorian and Teng

Besties Kev, Dorian and Teng love food, computer games, movies, and music.

Kev is a pop-culture expert, Dorian studies teaching, and Teng is the risk-taker, who keeps deferring university in the hopes of finding a good time.

Their combined heritage spans China, Greece and Vietnam, giving them a unique take on the world when it comes to the show.

Travel Guides Season 6 starts on Wednesday, April 19 at 7:30pm on Channel 9 and 9 Now .

The Fren family reveal: “Travel guides saved us!”

Profile picture of Zara Zubeidi

When the Fren family decided to apply for Travel Guides, they never imagined they would still be doing the series three seasons later.

Since the show’s 2017 launch, Mark and Cathy, along with their daughter Victoria and son Jonathon, are often recognised as they go about their day-to-day lives.

But the show has served as much more than just a route to fame. For the Fren clan, from Newcastle in NSW, it’s supported them financially through a turbulent time for their family-run German restaurant, Oma’s Kitchen.

“It’s been our lifeline, really,” mum Cathy, 55, admits to TV WEEK. “We’ve had a few problems over the past few years with regards to the [construction of] the light rail and the V8 Supercars 500 racetrack in Newcastle. It’s not a great place to be.

“The hardest part about being on the show is coming back and having to reopen a restaurant and get it up and running again.”

the new travel guides cast

The restaurant’s location means the Frens are forced to close during the staging of the annual Supercars Championship. In the first year of the event, it remained closed for five months. The family claim they lost 90 per cent of their customers and suffered financially.

It’s why, Mark, 57, says they’re extremely grateful to the Nine Network for asking them to return to the quirky travel show year after year.

“We thought it would be like most reality TV shows − that we’d just have one year and that’d be it,” the former primary school teacher explains.

“But people relate to us as a family.”

the new travel guides cast

Part of the Frens’ appeal is their ability to cope with stressful situations − and to see the lighter side.

“We thought we were nuts,” Cathy admits. “I kept on saying, ‘I can’t believe people think we’re normal!’ We just like to say what we think. There are no airs or graces.”

The new season premiere of Travel Guides attracted an impressive 752,000 viewers, indicating that both the family and program have built a steady following.

People often approach the family to tell them how they’ve affected their lives.

“We get many emails from people who are sick,” Mark says. “It’s such a feel-good show and I think it brings people so much joy, even if just for an hour.”

Cathy adds, “For me, that’s one of the best things to come out of Travel Guides − that we can give people so much joy and happiness.”

Mark says his son Jonathon, 27, probably gets the most attention. Fans of the show seem particularly obsessed with finding him a girlfriend.

“A little old lady came into the restaurant recently and said, ‘Excuse me − does Jonathon get laid in this series?'” Mark says with a laugh. “She was well into her 80s!”

Jonathon says he’s used to it.

“I don’t know why everyone wants me to find a girlfriend,” he says. “Maybe it’s because I have to succeed at everything, and that’s the only thing I haven’t succeeded at.”

Victoria’s view is that her brother is picky and she says he has “a long list” of attributes his ideal woman must have.

“She can’t be fat, short or have curly blonde hair,” the 25-year-old explains.

Listening in, Cathy is quick to make a wry observation.

“He’s describing his mother!” she exclaims. “Everything he says he doesn’t want is me!”

the new travel guides cast

Banter aside, it’s clear the family share a special bond. Cathy and Mark love the fact they get to spend so much time with their children as adults. They also have fond memories of their kids as they grew up.

“They were beautiful children and were spoiled rotten,” Cathy says. “Jonathon has always been quiet and was an excellent student. Victoria was beautiful until she was about 15, and then went totally wild until she was about 21.”

Jonathon adds, “They were fantastic parents. And they did spoil us rotten. They always had time for us.”

Travel Guides airs Tuesday, 9pm, Nine Network.

Travel Guides 2021 cast will take on international destinations

  • envelope-solid

It’s back. Travel Guides, one of Australia’s most beloved television shows, is set to air again this year. And we’d love to introduce you to the new Travel Guides 2021 cast.

This year, you’ll see a few new faces as they take us on some pretty crazy adventures. But you may recognise some too.

Before you meet the team, let’s cover some important facts.

When is Travel Guides on?

The show returns on Wednesday, April 28 for its first episode. It begins at 7.30pm. Don’t miss it on Channel 9 and 9Now.

Travel Guides 2021 will showcase all-new local and international tourist destinations in four action-packed episodes.

Travel Guides 2021 cast

International countries include Greece, Mauritius, South Korea and Cambodia. In Australia, the Travel Guides 2021 cast will visit South Australia and the Kimberley in WA.

In each episode of Travel Guides, our five groups travel to the same location for a week-long holiday.

Everyone must review the cuisine, accommodation, activities and tourist sights. Opinions always differ, leading to brutally honest and often outrageous reviews.

Meet the Travel Guides 2021 Cast

The Travel Guides are ordinary Australians turned travel critics and the cast take honesty to a whole new level. You will laugh out loud as they rate their holiday out of five stars.

Here’s what we know about this season’s cast.

Matt and Brett

Matt, 45, and Brett, 51, are the newest Travel Guides. The couple have been working together for 18 years, and married for seven.

Matt works for the local council while Brett is a primary school teacher. Together, they are generous and kind, but their biting commentary on everything around them packs a punch. Both love a good boogie too.

Matt is notorious for making new friends on holiday. He’s also a particularly adventurous eater who will give practically anything a try. This will definitely make their holiday experiences interesting.

The Fren Family

You might recognise these next Travel Guides 2021 cast members. The Fren family consists of parents Mark (59) and Cathy (57), and their two kids Jonathon (29) and Victoria (27).

Mark is the upbeat and forthright dad, happily married to Cathy for over 30 years. Cathy’s quirky sense of humour and distinctive laugh is contagious.

Daughter Victoria always has an opinion, admitting to speaking before she thinks. Son Jonathon is more reserved, often finding himself unwittingly involved in the family’s antics.

Together, the Fren’s love new destinations and different cultures. They’ll give anything a go, which often gets them into unpredictable situations.

Keep an eye out for our upcoming interview with the Fren Family on  Holidays with Kids .

Travel Guides 2021 cast

Kev, Dorian and Teng

Aptly known as “the boys”, these three good mates met when working in a Target store together.

Kev now has an art degree and is known for being sensible. Dorian is laid-back and polite, with hopes of becoming a teacher. Teng is the risk-taker, always looking for a good time.

The trio of suburban millennials share a love of junk food, computer games, music and movies. All in their twenties, Kev, Dorian and Teng are smart and positive. Always quick to make fun of each other, they guarantee laughs.

All three boys are Australian-born. But their combined Chinese, Greek and Vietnamese heritage gives them a unique take on the world.

Travel Guides 2021 cast

Kevin and Janetta

Kevin, 63, and Janetta, 69, have been married for more than three decades. These Travel Guides 2021 cast members are self-professed holiday snobs.

The couple originally lived in Melbourne, but sold their house to move to the country. The tree-change saved them so much money they can now afford to travel for at least four months a year.

These jet-setting retirees hate settling for anything second-rate. Kevin and Janetta love five-star hotels, big cities and quality service.

This discerning duo expect the best when on holiday. If the quality or service isn’t up to scratch, they won’t hesitate to make a complaint.

Travel Guides 2021 cast

Stack and Mel

This cowgirl duo signify the last, but definitely not the least, of our Travel Guides 2021 cast. The fan favourites from country NSW and Victoria are ready to hit the road again.

The girls are big on the rodeo scene. They frequently compete together and against each other in roping events.

In their signature hats, cowgirl boots and belt buckles, Stack and Mel are rough around the edges and always straight to the point.

Whilst the pair remain wary to venture anywhere beyond the Outback, they’re known to give anything a red-hot go.

Stack and Mel have spent most of their lives in the bush. This rendered them blissfully unaware of other cultures, languages and customs. Tune in to watch these country girls battle the big cities.

Travel Guides returns for its 6th season on Nine embarking upon new international destinations.

Returing cast include the Fren family from Newcastle, Matt and Brett, Kevin and Janetta, and best mates Kev, Dorian and Teng.

This season Mel takes time off to be with her baby, with twin sister Stack joined by their younger brother, Josh.

According to Nine, Josh has never been overseas before, and “he has packed an extra pair of jocks along with his passport. Like his sisters, Josh is a true-blue country boy who will no doubt struggle with the lingo, the customs and the crowds in foreign lands. But lucky for him, he is just as game as the girls and will give anything a crack.”

The Travel Guides Cast: Everything About Salary and Living Conditions

The Travel Guides is a popular Australian reality TV series. It first aired in 2017 and was met with positive feedback from viewers. Australians were eager to watch a different type of reality TV series. They found this show to be a refreshing change from the regular selection of reality TV programs.

This series follows groups of travellers from Australia. All of the travellers are ordinary Australians, but each group is different from the next. Their job is to review the accommodations, cuisine, and tourist attractions.

the new travel guides cast

However, this isn’t your ordinary travel series. The contestants on this show are put in unpredictable situations. It’s part of what makes this show unpredictable and humorous. Each group of travellers will have a different take on the situations at hand.

What Does the Cast Do on Travel Guides?

The cast of this hit reality series gets to go on exclusive vacations around the world. While they travel, they will experience different activities, try dishes custom to other cultures, and stay at local hotels and resorts. In exchange for this, they will leave brutally honest reviews.

In each episode of the series, the travellers will go on a week-long vacation (all expenses paid). The groups each consist of family members or close friends. They will leave their comfortable nest in Australia and venture to big cities worldwide.

Viewers are introduced to new groups of travellers each season, and some fan favourites have returned to the show. One of the most popular groups on the show is the Fren family, who has appeared in all five seasons.

These groups have gotten to travel to places all over the world. Some of the places they’ve visited include:

  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Perth, Australia
  • Argentina & more

Does the Cast of Travel Guides Get Paid?

It hasn’t been released to the public how much the castmates of Travel Guides get paid. However, the Fren family had openly commented on how the show saved them when they were experiencing financial hardship with the restaurant they own.

Many reality TV shows made in Australia will provide contestants with weekly pay while filming. Travel Guides is a different scenario. Ordinary Australians get to travel to tourist destinations in Australia and internationally for free. All fees are covered, including accommodations, transportation, meals, shopping, and other activities they participate in. Since everything is free for travellers, they don’t have to worry about any expenses.

Whether or not the contestants get paid per episode and how much they earn hasn’t been revealed. Each group of family and friends do have the job of leaving a red hot honest review. Even if they don’t get paid, the free travelling and TV exposure are worth it.

A lot of Australian reality TV contestants are able to earn money because of the exposure they have gotten. Once the TV series airs, fans of the show begin following the castmates on social media and subscribing to their content. Well-known castmates have been able to use their exposure to get further opportunities, such as appearances on other TV series. It’s also common for them to get paid endorsement deals where brands pay them to post content on Instagram and other social media platforms.

Another way that these contestants use their exposure to earn money is through paid online gigs, like Cameo and similar platforms. This is when they record personal messages for fans for a cost. The more popular a castmate is, the more they can charge for a video. It’s also common for castmates to use paid subscription platforms, like Patreon and OnlyFans, to earn an income. Also, a lot of contestants may like to relax by gambling and choose a new Australian online casino .

What Are the Living Conditions Like on Travel Guides?

Every country these travellers visit will have different accommodations. The accommodations will be based on the culture of the country they visit. This is why the reviews from the Fren family, cowgirl twins, and other favourite castmates are always red hot.

For the most part, they get to experience good quality living conditions. However, since the accommodations are often different from what they are used to, it leads to some hilarious reviews. This is one of the main reasons why this reality TV series has been such a hit with Australians and other viewers around the world.

Every episode is a different experience for the castmates and the viewers. Travellers could be enjoying the lux life on a cruise, visiting a casino in the city, or going on an off-road adventure. They must be up for anything to get the full travel experience.

Will Travel Guides Return for Season 6?

Do you want to see the Fren family and other fan favourites back on your TV screen? Currently, there is no word on when season 6 will be released. This is because the 6th season hasn’t been renewed yet.

Fans of this beloved reality TV show shouldn’t have reason to worry about the series’ fate. It has been confirmed that the series hasn’t been cancelled and is just on a break.

Does the idea of temporarily leaving your job and travelling the world for free sound like a dream? That’s exactly what the castmates of this popular reality TV series get to experience. While there currently isn’t any information released on what contestants earn from filming the series, the experience they get is well worth it.

Travel Guides: “I’d rather be a snob, than a bogan”

Drinks in hand, enjoying jetsetting, but kevin & janetta have no issue with how they are portrayed on nine's travel guides..

  • Published by David Knox
  • on April 18, 2023
  • Filed under News , Top Stories

Intrepid travellers Kevin Moloney & Janetta Stones recently finished filming their 7th season of Travel Guides for Nine.

In a joint interview the retired couple spoke with TV Tonight about their time on the hit Nine series, proudly toasting the finer things in life and acknowledging how their reviews provide a perfect contrast to other cast reviews.

How were you cast?

Janetta: I saw an ad on Channel Nine that said, ‘If you can give up three months next year, and you like traveling, apply here.’ We’d just retired at that stage so I said to Kevin we should apply, and he said…

Kevin: ‘What would they want with old things like us?’

Janetta: So that was my cue to go down the track and apply.

Kevin: We didn’t know anything about the show but we saw an episode of the British Travel Guides and we thought, ‘Oh, God, what have we got ourselves into? It looked pretty terrible!’

The Australian version is very different, thankfully. So we were thrilled to get involved in the first series. And then it just grew its own legs, and here we are at Season 7.

How do you feel about the way the show portrays you?

Janetta: We come across exactly as we are in real life. We like the nice things of life.

Kevin: We’re are a bit older, a bit more discerning them than some of the others. In the first season they introduced us as ‘Travel Snobs.’ But we’re fine with that.

Janetta: If it means we don’t like camping, we prefer to go business class, five stars, like fine food and wine, that’s what it is.

I’d rather be a snob than a bogan, but we’re not snobs by any stretch of the imagination. We just know what we like, and what we don’t.

Kevin: Nothing is scripted. No words are put into our mouths. If we don’t like something, we’re free to say we don’t like it. But I think that’s what people can relate to.

Janetta: We have fans in the street quite literally from 8 to 80. People will say that ‘You’re just like my parents,’ or ‘I want to be like you when I get older.’

What have been some of the more memorable things you’ve done on the show?

Kevin: Last year, or the year before, I jumped out of a plane. Now, I would never think of doing that on a holiday. So there are situations you find yourself in and we end up liking some things that we would never have even tried.

Janetta: They juxtapose us against pretty much nearly all of the other groups, which makes makes the show what it is. What we like, they don’t.

Kevin: That’s the magic of the show. ….One of the places we went to was the Arctic Circle. Janetta doesn’t like the cold so somwehere like that wouldn’t really feature on our travels. But we absolutely loved it.

Janetta: It was so memorable, really, really incredible.

the new travel guides cast

Tell us about behind the scenes, and how you shoot the show?

Janetta: We don’t know where we’re going until we actually get to the airport. We only get an email the night before telling us where we have to be, and what sort of clothes to wear. That’s very much against how we are, which is being very organised.

We could be doing anything from FinAir business class, that we did on our last trip, or we could be doing the Perth – London flight, middle seat, third back row in economy.

Kevin: For 17 hours solid. That was pretty close to torture.

Janetta: We quite often will use our points or money to upgrade.

Kevin: The older you get, the more comfort you need.

How much interaction do you have with the other cast?

Kevin: We all travel together. But on camera, we don’t have any interaction whatsoever. They’re doing their thing and we’re doing our thing, and we try not to influence each other.

We don’t talk about the experiences we do together. So if, say the Fren family or the Target boys or Stack & Mel, have a certain opinion on an activity, our opinion might be different. So we don’t want to influence them with our opinion, and they won’t influence us with theirs

What is your essential item to take on aeroplane?

Kevin: Noise cancelling headphones.

Janetta: I have an e-reader with me.

Kevin: It really depends on what class you’re in, and the how long the flight is. Some people take neck pillows, all that sort of rubbish. I try to have the least amount of stuff around me when I’m on an aeroplane. I hate stuff on the floor and all over the place. The less I have the better.

the new travel guides cast

Where do you travel to this season?

Kevin: We did 10 episodes. We went to Europe twice, Africa twice.

Janetta: We only did two episodes in Australia in Melbourne and the Riverina, but also South Africa, Zambia, England, Scotland, Croatia, Helsinki, Borneo, Vanuatu, New Zealand. Pretty much for 4 months we aren’t on any particular timezone.

Kevin: You come back from Europe or the Americas or wherever, and you’re only home for two or three days. There’s no way you get back into your home timezone. So you’re just floating for 4-5 months.

Janetta: Croatia was absolutely beautiful.

Kevin: We saw a different side of Croatia than we had in our last trip, which was our own holiday a few years ago. Travel Guides took us to different places in Croatia, which was sensational. But for me it was probably Lapland (Finland)…..to be knee deep in freshly powdered snow was an experience that I’ll never forget.

Have you ever met narrator Denise Scott?

Kevin: No. I’d like to, I like Denise, she does a great job.

It’s now 7 seasons, how long do you see yourselves doing the show?

Janetta: Each series we get home and we say ‘Never again.’ But I think it must be like childbirth. I’m terrible at the time on that flight home. But once it’s over you forget about it, and you’re ready to go again.

Travel Guides returns 7:30pm Wednesday on Nine.

Love this show and all the participants…..their differences make it what it is….👌

Very good amateur actors, get paid to overact and over dramatise, but people like watching it🤦‍♂️

Interesting behind the scenes look at Travel Guides. Thanks, Mr. Knox.

The casting on this show is the best, it’s a great mixture of different people who like different things and but they’re all so likeable and great personalities, there’s not one person I don’t like!!

The differing personalities makes the show.

Love the show and Janetta and Kevin are my favorites. To me they are the least irritable and make the most sense in their evaluation of the places they visit (not like the ‘over the top’ Fren family – where I turn down the sound when they are on – LOL)

I think you hit the nail on the head regarding the appeal of Kevin and Janetta, they say it as it is and provide really useful feedback on their stay, which is why they are my favourite too. I also quite like the Target boys as everything seems to be so new to them, it’s like watching them grow as people.

I really enjoy Kevin and Janetta too, they are entertaining and perhaps share a similar perspective, I like some of the nice things too, but am younger and can’t necessarily afford them!

Not snobs at all, nor old things (age is only how you feel) just sensible people who enjoy travelling and a bit of luxury. They don’t try to outdo each other with the comedy, they certainly don’t put each other down because they are afraid to partake in an activity unlike some on the show and they certainly don’t make Australians look like bad tourists with OTT antics.

I love these two! They give great balance to Travel Guides! Love this show (it’s one of my favorites) and I’m realling looking forward to the return on Wednesday!

The british version has a snobby couple as well.

the british show has not been on since 2015 ….

Love this show,so glad it’s back for another season.

Every Chef I Talked to Loves This Tortilla Press

the new travel guides cast

If you’ve ever had a made-from-scratch tortilla fresh off a comal, you understand: No premade grocery-store tortilla can possibly compare. Whether it’s a fragrant, slightly sweet corn tortilla or a still warm, slightly nutty flour tortilla, the difference between the homemade kind and the discs sitting in plastic on the shelf is so vast they may as well be totally separate food groups.

The most essential tool to making fresh tortillas at home is a good tortilla press. Sure, you can use a rolling pin or a wine bottle to flatten them out individually, but as I found out firsthand when I took up tortilla-making as a pandemic hobby, hand-rolling each of them gets old fast, particularly since I rarely made tortillas in batches of fewer than a dozen. Not only is a tortilla press much quicker at flattening the masa for tortillas into a pliable circular shape ready for griddling, it helps ensure that the thickness of your tortillas is consistent, which means that they’ll cook more evenly. Plus, you can use it to make other flatbreads at home, like roti, parathas, naan, or pita. I’ve even used mine to flatten pie dough.

A press is a pretty simple gadget. It’s essentially two flat plates attached with a hinge that allow you to put something in between them. You use a handle to press down on the contents inside, applying even pressure to flatten them. (Typically, you line the press with a plastic bag or parchment paper to prevent the tortilla dough from sticking, another lesson I learned the hard way.) When I started looking into tortilla presses, I learned that there are two major genres. The first is a circular press, usually made out of aluminum or cast iron. The second are square presses, usually also made of metal, though sometimes wood.

One square press stood out in my research: a jewel-colored, sleek, metal number that popped up repeatedly among the Mexican chefs I follow on social media. I noticed it in the Instagram Stories of Bricia Lopez , co-owner of Guelaguetza in Los Angeles and author of Asada , and in the kitchen behind Mi Cocina writer Rick Martinez in his videos of his kitchen in Mazatlán. When I reached out to Martinez to ask, he confirmed: It was the Doña Rosa Tortilla Press, an artisan-made press from Oaxaca distributed in the U.S. by the masa harina brand Masienda.

“I love this press so much,” Martinez told me. “I have two of them. It is so beautiful that it makes me want to make tortillas from scratch just so I can pull it out and use it.”

The press is made out of powder-coated rolled steel, which means that not only is it an appealing pop of color for your kitchen — it comes in a cobalt blue, a seafoam green, a bright, poppy yellow, white, and black — it also is a serious piece of equipment. The weight of the press, Martinez explained, is key. It means that it doesn’t wiggle back and forth while you use it. “I love the heft of it. It is virtually indestructible, and lasts forever, which is why a lot of restaurants and taco stands in Mexico use them,” Martinez said. (Plus, when Mi Cocina came out, the brand released an edition in pink to match the cover of the book.)

It’s not just Martinez, though. As I reached out to chefs for their thoughts on the best tortilla press, time and time again, I got the same answer: the Doña Rosa . Ana Castro, the New Orleans–based chef-owner of Acamaya, is also a huge fan. “They are the real deal; they are made in Mexico by Doña Rosa, she’s a master of her craft and has been producing them for longer than I have been alive,” Castro said. Plus, she appreciates that with the Doña Rosa , unlike the traditional circular cast-iron models, you can adjust the thickness of the tortilla that you’re serving. “This tortilla press is the last one you’ll ever buy,” Castro said.

It’s also the press that Chef Fermín Núñez uses in his masa-centric restaurants in Austin. “Masienda’s Doña Rosa Tortilla Press is what we use at both of our restaurants, Suerte and Este, to make fresh corn tortillas daily,” Nunez explained. “A good tortilla press should be high quality and have some weight to it. Masienda’s has both, which is exactly why we use theirs in the restaurants.”

When I got my hands on a Doña Rosa press to try it out, I had to agree. (I chose the seafoam-green one.) Though I am far from a master at making tortillas, the Doña Rosa tortilla press was a joy to use. It’s sturdy enough that I never worry about it slipping on the counter, and it quickly and evenly flattens masa into discs. The adjustable-thickness option makes it particularly versatile for use with other flatbreads, too. And it’s a pleasing object to have in my kitchen — always at the ready, reminding me that fresh tortillas aren’t that far away.

Knuckles with a rubber chicken

Knuckles , Paramount Plus’ spinoff series of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies , could have been a shameless IP cash-in. And the premiere isn’t far off! Following the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 , we find Sonic and Miles “Tails” Prower living an idyllic life in Montana, and helping their new red echidna friend get the hang of Earth life. Without the budget for a big action spectacle, it’s mostly a kid sitcom with the Sonic gang — until it very much is not. In the subsequent five episodes, Knuckles (voiced again by Idris Elba) pairs up with dimwitted Green Hills sheriff Wade Whipple (Adam Pally) on a road trip to Nevada, where they both hope to find meaning in the world. The result is basically Tommy Boy for Sega buffs. It’s bananas.

Knuckles veers from the Sonic movie blueprint through pure demographically transcendent hijinks that range from cartoon pratfalls to hallucinatory dream ballets set to Michael Bolton singles. There are Men in Black types hunting the echidna warrior for his superpowered quills, and a few by-the-books fights in showcasing Knuckles’ energy-charged moveset, but despite the title, Pally is the star of this show. As Wade quests to reconnect with his dad, “Pistol” Pete Whipple (Cary Elwes), at a major bowling tournament, he and his new sidekick navigate a rowdy Shabbat dinner, outrun a Tiger King-esque bounty hunter (played by The Mighty Boosh ’s Julian Barratt), and hang out a bar in Reno talkin’ life. Pally is electrocuted, exploded, punched in the face, smashed into cage bars, and dragged across multiple highways.

The Tommy Boy invocation goes beyond the road-trip format; the Happy Endings and Mindy Project actor goes full Chris Farley in — of all things! — a television show based on the Sonic video games.

Adam Pally barfing a rainbow in stars while in a bowling alley in the Knuckles show

“That is such a high compliment,” Pally says when I embarrass him with this compliment on a recent call. “There’s not a Farley move I haven’t done to my family or a Mike Myers reference I haven’t made to my cousins, so I think knowing all that stuff and loving it so much… It’s so ingrained in who I am. It’s probably annoying to people that I reference those things so much.”

Pally attributes the series’ free-for-all approach to someone who doesn’t actually appear in Knuckles : Jim Carrey. He believes the actor’s performance as Dr. Robotnik set such a tone on Sonic 1 and 2 that anything was possible in the spinoff. “From knowing Jim Carrey’s performance and working with him on the first two, I couldn’t fail, you know? That freedom just lets you soar.” Pally adds that Carrey’s “fingerprints are all over not just this series, but probably my entire career.”

Pally’s co-star, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi), went into Knuckles on the exact same wavelength. His character, Agent Mason, is one of the suits looking to take Knuckles out with a well-placed power-glove punch to the snout. But to click with the tone of the show, his mind wandered back to the days of watching Jim Carrey on In Living Color .

“I really wanted to embody his goofiness, but do it in the Agent Mason way,” Mescudi says. “One of the things that people don’t know about me is that I am very, very goofy. That’s, like, a very big part of me. [...] I do a lot of dramas, I do a lot of serious stuff. So it’s a real nice break to just kind of have fun and goof off.”

Scott Mescudi as Agent Mason and Ellie Taylor as Agent Willoughby in Knuckles standing with supercharged red energy gloves and a giant gun

There’s still a ton of precision when “goofing off” involves acting against a 3-foot-tall CG echidna. Mescudi says there was a decent amount of training required to be able to film a simple action sequence — from choreography to fighting guys in Knuckles gloves on set, then repeating it all without any counterpart so the VFX team could fill it all in later — and that it was unlike anything he’d ever done. Working on Knuckles wasn’t even a talk-to-the-tennis-ball assignment; there was an on-set Knuckles puppeteer around to riff in every scene, giving Mescudi and Pally a physical presence to work off of for all the comedy bits.

Pally celebrates the writers, who all understood the assignment and wrote to his strengths. It’s unclear to the actor if a Knuckles TV show would have seen the Sonic character breaking challah bread with Stockard Channing on a quiet Friday night if it weren’t for Pally’s Jewish heritage, but the team took full advantage.

“It’s all so organic,” Pally says of the comedy. “And also it’s just fun to hear Elba say ‘matzah ball.’”

The Bazaar Guide to New Orleans

Just in time for Jazz Fest

Even if you can’t make it to Jazz Fest, the city’s busy cultural calendar means there’s really never a bad time to plan a trip to the Crescent City. Ahead, Harper’s Bazaar shares our favorite spots to eat, drink, dance, and shop in New Orleans. Laissez les bon temps rouler —let the good times roll!

.css-1pfpin{font-family:NewParisTextBook,NewParisTextBook-roboto,NewParisTextBook-local,Georgia,Times,Serif;font-size:1.75rem;line-height:1.2;margin:0rem;padding-left:5rem;padding-right:5rem;}@media(max-width: 48rem){.css-1pfpin{padding-left:2.5rem;padding-right:2.5rem;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-1pfpin{font-size:2.5rem;line-height:1.2;}}.css-1pfpin b,.css-1pfpin strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;}.css-1pfpin em,.css-1pfpin i{font-style:normal;font-family:NewParisTextItalic,NewParisTextItalic-roboto,NewParisTextItalic-local,Georgia,Times,Serif;} WHERE TO STAY

One of the greatest things about New Orleans is that there’s no shortage of gorgeous hotels to host you. A personal favorite of mine is Hotel Saint Vincent —a former orphanage turned mod-inspired abode (and also where I happened to get married)—tucked away in the quiet Lower Garden District and home to one of the best pools in the city. Those who want to be closer the action (i.e., the reckless abandon of Bourbon Street) can opt for lodging closer to the French Quarter, where Expedia-approved properties such as the Eliza Jane , the Kimpton , and the newly renovated Four Seasons New Orleans provide not only top-tier hospitality, but also the ultimate convenience: being able to step out the door and join any party that’s passing by. New Orleans has a subtle duality that one notices once they get to know the city better—and part of its beauty is being able to switch between the lavish celebrations and the more laid-back, slow-to-start Southern mornings.

WHERE TO DRINK

There’s no such thing as a bad drink in New Orleans. Whether you’re looking for an artisanal cocktail or a glass of funky natural wine, anywhere you stumble into will likely have the libation you’re looking for. For those who want to spend the day with a bottle and the best damn charcuterie plate you’ll ever have, head to Bachannal in the city’s hipster haunt of Bywater. If it’s time for happy hour, Luke’s downtown has a perfect French 75 (with cognac! the NOLA way!) paired with a dozen fresh oysters, and there’s Peychaud’s or Columns Bar for dirty martinis done right. Paradise Lounge at Hotel Saint Vincent also makes a mean Italian margarita and rosemary spritz, and the roof of the Ace Hotel is the perfect spot for a nightcap (and makes a top-shelf espresso martini).

WHERE TO EAT

Don’t tell New York, but to me, New Orleans is America’s best food city. While on a macro level the town is known for the obvious contenders (beignets! gumbo! po’boys!), it also has so many hidden gems from local chefs aiming to reinvent how the world sees Creole cuisine. Be sure to visit Acme’s Oyster House for traditional New Orleans eats, (get a dozen chargrilled, add hot sauce, and ask for extra bread), Elizabeth’s in Bywater for a perfect Southern breakfast (praline bacon: Don’t ask, just do!), and Cafe Sbisa for chicken and (sweet potato!) waffles and sinfully good shrimp and grits. For chef-driven sandwiches bigger than your head, head to Turkey & the Wolf ; or for a gorgeous weekend brunch in a dreamy garden, opt for Cafe Amelie . Satsuma is great for vegetarians or anyone hoping for bit of lighter fare, and Dakar has been highlighted nationwide for its take on Senegalese cuisine. Cafe du Monde and its pillowy-soft beignets are, of course, nonnegotiable.

WHERE TO DANCE

Technically, the party can be wherever you want it to be in New Orleans, but for the sake of brevity, the best place to find live music in the city would be anywhere on Frenchman Street. Nightlife staples include DBA New Orleans , the Spotted Cat Music Club , the Rabbit Hole , and Treme Hideaway , among many others .

WHERE TO SHOP

New Orleans is a city for music lovers and eccentric dressers. Any vinyl fan will have a field day sorting through vintage LPs at NOLA Mix Records in the Lower Garden District, while independent boutiques like Lekha , Elysian by Emily Morrison , and Saint Claude Social Club provide provide eclectic pieces for your home and wardrobe. Nestled inside of Hotel Saint Vincent, ByGeorge is perfect for any luxury lover: The mini boutique sells resortwear and accessories from brands like Loewe, Dries Van Noten, Christopher John Rogers, and Rabanne.
