Thimble Island Cruises aboard the Sea Mist, Branford, CT, USA

Sea Mist - Thimble Island Cruise - photo by Luxury Experience -

One of our favorite summer adventures is taking a sightseeing cruise to explore a new area, as for us, there is no better place than to be out on the water on a beautiful summer day. With this in mind, on Saturday, July 15, 2023, we boarded the Sea Mist, with its jaunty Pirate’s flag flying from the upper deck, and Captain Justin at the helm ready for a new adventure. During the 45-minute sightseeing cruise through the islands, Captain Justin narrated the history and pointed out interesting details about the Thimble Islands.

Captain Justin - Thimble Island Cruise - photo by Luxury Experience

The 44-foot Carman Boat of Chesapeake Design, 49-passenger Sea Mist has two decks, an enclosed lower deck with large windows for those desiring a more sheltered experience, with a snack bar, and head, and an open upper deck for those wanting to feel the wind in their hair, the sun on their faces, and have unobstructed views that are perfect for photography. We alternated from being on the lower deck to the upper deck to experience the best of both worlds.

The Thimble Islands is an archipelago in Connecticut in Long Island Sound consisting of Horse Island, Money Island, Governor Island, Rogers Island, Bear Island, Davis Island, High Island, Pot Island, Outer Island, Kidd Island, and a few smaller islands.

Horse Island - Thimble Island Cruise - photo by Luxury Experience

While some of the islands are inhabited with spectacular summer homes, some with a single home, some have a cluster of well-appointed homes on them to create a small community, and others are uninhabited, for a reason, like Horse Island, the largest of the islands with 17 acres, which is owned by Yale University and is used as an ecological laboratory as three-quarters of the island is covered in poison ivy.

Money Island - Thimble Island Cruise - photo by Luxury Experience

Money Island is the next largest island with 12 acres and has a community of 32 homes and a library, followed by Governor Island (10 acres) inhabited with 14 houses, and Rogers Island is also substantial in size with 7.75 acres. Interesting to note about Bear Island is that it has a granite quarry on it, and its claim to fame includes supplying granite for the Lincoln Memorial, Grant’s Tomb, and the base for the Statue of Liberty.

Thimble Island Cruise - photo by Luxury Experience

Named for the thimbleberry, the Thimble Islands were first discovered in 1614 by Adrian Block, who also discovered Block Island. This impressive chain of islands has long attracted a celebrated clientele that included the 27 th President of the United States, William Howard Taft (1857-1930) who established his Summer White House on Davis Island for 2 years. The Privateer (and pirate) Captain William Kidd (1654-1701) also made his way around the Thimble Islands and legend has it that he may have buried his treasures on these islands.

Thimble Island Cruise - photo by Luxury Experience

General Tom Thumb (1838-1883), who performed with the P.T. Barnum Circus out of Bridgeport, Connecticut, made his home on the Thimble Islands, and many other celebrities still have residences here including American cartoonist Garry Trudeau and his wife television host Jane Pauley.

Thimble Island Cruise - photo by Luxury Experience

As the Sea Mist made its way around the Thimble Islands, it was interesting to note not only the natural beauty of the landscape and the stunning homes, but also to watch the many birds in action including the black cormorants perched on the rocks with their wings poised and spread outwards to dry them in the sun after coming up from a dive, or the American Oystercatcher, a shorebird distinguishable by its black and white patterned body and long red bill.

Thimble Island Cruise - photo by Luxury Experience

It was also interesting to learn about the varying depths of the Long Island Sound as we cruised around the islands, which ranged from a low of 8 feet in certain parts to depths of 28 feet and deeper in others, making a knowledgeable and experienced captain essential when navigating in the Thimble Islands. We thoroughly enjoyed our Thimble Islands Cruise aboard the Sea Mist, and look forward to returning, perhaps before the season ends on October 15, 2023.

A fun summer activity in Branford! The online ticket ordering process was really easy. It was much better than having to buy tickets in person. The islands are really beautiful!! They are all unique. I wish I could afford to live on them! My only real critique is that I would love more signage to point towards the boat and boarding area. I got confused walking there.

"Thimble Island Cruise". At the Stony Creek Dock; a young lady in the crew, directed us onto Captain Mike's boat. They are a family owned and run company that have been doing these tours for many years. The boat had two decks to sit and view for the trip and we took the upper. The Navy flag with 13 stars flies atop. The captain gave us a detailed tour and answered questions as he maneuvered the boat in the waters, and we saw various small islands of which 25 of over 300, have people on them today. Years ago, people lived there on the island full time with all sorts of uses, including mining for the Pink Granite in the area. 1938 a hurricane did massive damage to the islands in this area. But now it's a place for summer rentals only. Some islands have fresh water running underneath the bay. Others get water from the shore and some use holding tanks that get rainwater from the roof. Battery, generator, backup generators and solar are also used for electrical power. The piped in fresh water and electricity are all shut down in the Fall, except for one island that has Formal gardens and plants viewed from the outside but not open to the public. Outer Island is operated under the US Fish and Wildlife service. It is the only public island to allow visitor to land on the beach where a ferry boat will bring you out and pick you up. One of the more interesting stories of how an island got its name went like this. A couple married and went to one of the islands for their honeymoon. The mother-in-law rowed out to make sure they got there safely. The newlyweds were ok and stayed with her until she fell asleep. They took the boat and left her there. Thus, the island was named Mother-in-law's island and the name has stuck ever since. We even heard of the haunting of Captain Kidd, and his fellow pirates, in 1695 they haunted the gallows dock, Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum. On top of this island he could see most of Long Island Sound. Captain Kidd plumaged every boat that passed and he took gold and silver. He was said to have buried his treasure on one of the islands with claims of gold doubloons being found some years later. So there really is something of interest for everyone. It is a nice fair weather trip to add to your list to take.

This was a fun and cheap thing to do if you have a free hour. Who doesn't love a boat ride? We had a group of 6 for the cruise and there was no real way to make a reservation you just show up to the dock. Didn't like that once we got to the place there wasn't a clear sign of where to meet and when we finally found the meeting area the times written on the board were a bit confusing. The ride itself was a lot of fun. The people on our cruise were entertaining and the captain told a few funny jokes and interesting stories about the islands we passed by. Very beautiful and not something I expected to experience during my visit to New Haven. Highly recommend as a one time deal. Only $13 and totally worth the experience!

Today a family group of seven went to take a cruise. My brother in law and sister in law arrived at 2:30 and stood in line as you can't pre purchase your tickets! We were taking the 4:00 They spoke to the dock master who assured them that they could hold a place in line as we were all arriving from various destinations. When the last two arrived one man was so irritate that we felt uncomfortable getting in line with our family members that had gotten there first! Consequently 4 of us left and 3 took the tour! This all could have been avoid d by pre paying . You arrive to buy a ticket and you get one. Over 200 people were in line with one broken down boat, not everyone would get on. We were so disappointed that a family event was destroyed. Needs much better organization!

Cruise may be a strong word, but this is a fun way to spend 45m on a boat around the thimble islands! There can be an impressive line, and I'm not sure waiting 30-40m would be worth it for me, but be prepared to wait on the weekend! Also- bring cash ($13 a person as of August 2019) because they don't take card.

The Thimble Island Cruise can be a fun and an enjoyable activity to do while on vacation. It is amazing to check out the beautiful homes built on these tiny islands. The cruise enjoyment itself really depends on who your captain is. A couple years ago we did the cruise and really enjoyed the narration. Our most recent cruise however we had young lady with a cadence in her voice that was so irritating we could not wait to get back to shore. When she was complaining about the kayakers or the seagulls she spoke normally but the rehearsed speech was delivered in such an intentionally phony way we thought perhaps somebody gave her bad advice on how to narrate the cruise. Also the diesel smell from this boat we were on was overwhelming so our group was not as happy as previous experiences. The waiting by lining up on the dock was not an easy process for the seniors. It would be better handled if there is a way to purchase tickets and wait in the shade until your assigned boat arrives.

Good time aboard the Volsunga IV with Captain Bob! My husband had never been to the Thimble Islands so on a day off we went down to take the 45 minute cruise. It was an enjoyable cruise with good narration.

thimble island happy hour cruise

I took this tour with Captain Bob years ago, but this time a young woman gave the tour. She has a totally bizarre speaking style, as has been commented on by another reviewer- it's slow and monotonous in a sing-songy way, and at first, we weren't sure how we'd tolerate it for 45 minutes. But we got used to it, she told all the good stories, and she proved a source of odd entertainment. If I take someone on the tour again, I'd wait the extra 45 minutes to do Captain Dave's tour, think, but this was a perfectly solid tour and a pleasant boat ride.

Awesome time.. the weather was perfect staff was friendly and pleasant! Cruise was 45 minutes and told a story which was awesome..

Photo of Jessica L.

Very disappointed after driving an hour and arriving with ample time only to find out that the boat had been tied to the dock all day and none of its staff had been seen, ergo the Volsunga was not taking any tours. Their website, of course, did not reflect any change in schedule. The other tours operating from the dock are equally disorganized and poor at communicating departures, boat capacity, etc. my recommendation is to skip the whole thing unless you have hours to wait in line in the sun with no clue as to when or whether you will get on a tour.

Thimble Islands Cruise | Connecticut’s Vacation Retreat

Captain Bob Milne’s tours of Connecticut’s Thimble Islands are big on legend, lore, and history—but what he doesn’t tell you also reveals island truths.

By Wayne Curtis

Jun 24 2014

CaptainBob

Captain Bob Milne on the stern of his tour boat, the Volsunga IV. He’s a native of Stony Creek, a mainland village of Branford, Connecticut, and has spent most of his life on the water.

Wearing a microphone headset and perched up in the bow of his 48-passenger tour boat, the Volsunga IV , Captain Bob points out the granite rocks of Cut-in-Two, then adds a critical detail: Tom Thumb carved his initials into those stones more than a century ago. The passengers murmur appreciatively; it’s a small, lulling sound, like waves against a hull. Then we pass Dogfish Rock, and Captain Bob points out that it’s one of the few manmade islands hereabouts—created by piling rock upon rock hauled from the mainland—and he uses this fact to launch into a brief disquisition into how owning an island could raise the status of members of the gentry during the late Victorian era. Near Bear Island, once home to an active quarry, he tells us that the island’s distinctive stone can be found today in the Lincoln Memorial, Grant’s Tomb, and the base of the Statue of Liberty. Lips purse into the universal “who knew?” expression, and heads nod.

Captain Bob Milne on the stern of his tour boat, the Volsunga IV. He’s a native of Stony Creek, a mainland village of Branford, Connecticut, and has spent most of his life on the water.

Captain Bob is Bob Milne, a lifelong resident of Stony Creek, Connecticut. He’s the owner and operator of Thimble Island Cruises, leading 45-minute tours through these islands throughout the summer. It’s a little-known fact, but animating rocks is one of the skills honed by good tour guides. They can take something inert and uninteresting and inject a bit of wonder into it. They mine rocks for murmurs.

We motor on, and Captain Bob points out Governor Island, now populating it with one Mr. Weed, a businessman and avid gardener who lived there during the early decades of the last century. He paints a vision of a white-goateed gentleman puttering around the harbor in an elegant mahogany steam launch and wearing a white captain’s cap. “And the name of Mr. Weed’s boat was …?” Captain Bob trails off in a question. He awaits an answer, which isn’t forthcoming from the two dozen passengers this morning. “The Sea Weed, of course,” he says. A muffled groan arises, and Captain Bob waits for it to subside before adding, “If you’re overthinking it, you shouldn’t be on this boat.”

One of the most common descriptions of the Thimbles—an archipelago of some 100 to 300 islands (the number depending on the tide and your own definition of an island, as opposed to a rocky outcropping) just off Stony Creek—is that they look like a piece of Maine that somehow broke free and drifted south before running aground in Long Island Sound. That’s a hard description to improve upon. Like their granite cousins to the north, these islands are craggy and stoic and come in eclectic shapes and sizes—some round like igloos, some long like bony fingers.

Delivered Daily: The Latest in Travel, Food, and Living in New England

At only three-quarters of an acre in area, Dogfish Island, a.k.a. Dogfish Rock—constructed not by nature but by man—is the smallest of the 23 inhabited Thimbles, an archipelago in Long Island Sound.

Two dozen of them are capped with houses: some small; others that seem out of scale, like a large hat sitting precariously atop a head. Many were built as island getaways for the affluent, who arrived by steamship or train from New York, or by streetcar from New Haven, about a dozen miles to the west. The Thimble Islands—named after the thimbleberries that grew on them, not their diminutive size—didn’t attract top-tier robber barons, but rather their court followers, including bankers and brass-mill owners. “We were a notch below Newport,” Captain Bob says.

Captain Bob is nearing 54 years old and grew up on the mainland in Stony Creek, when it was still more or less a blue-collar working waterfront, a poor-cousin coastal neighborhood that’s technically part of the town of Branford. He was one of six kids; he stayed as his siblings all moved away.

Captain Bob took to the water as a teen. “As a kid you could always work on the islands,” he told me. He began by hauling garbage—“I know the backs of all these houses,” he notes wryly—and at age 14 worked aboard the small private ferry and tour service that operated from the town dock. He started the lifelong endeavor of accumulating information about the islands, their residents, and the complicated relations between the two. (Growing up, he said, “it was Creekers and Islanders. Once in a while we’d mix. But they had nicer boats, and we had old dories.”)

West Crib Island, and East Crib Island were so named in reference to their shipbuilding role in Colonial days. Cribs in this sense are natural stone formations that can serve as dry docks.
